shafer is So serious but is still kind hot. He definitely knows his subject and
answers questions well and cares about students.
Nice guy, just grades hard on papers, ****
I have never gotten less than a 4.0 on a paper in 3 years of college. He gave me no more than a 2.5 on any paper. I could accept that if he was that hard on evry1. However, I read papers that he gave 4.0's on that I wld have been ashamed of in 9th grde
Tough but fair. He helped me every week during office hours with my papers.
An excellent instructor and cares for his students!Tough but students will learn and that's the role of an instructor and not to be popular and easy!! Tough is great; easy is BAD!!
An excellent instructor. No silly things. You will learn much if you want to. Caring and fair!
VERY TOUGH GRADING!!!! He needs to be teaching honors classes, NOT 101... DO NOT TAKE if you arnt willing to put TONS of time into your papers
Very demanding but very nice and concerned. Don't expect more of the same high school fluff. You will learn if you hang in there.
He's a very nice guy, beware though, he is very big on public speaking, I've had him for two class, and both times he made me make a public speech, the first time was a deabate!!!
Pretty cool except that he wanted us to buy three of his books, two of which we didn't need.
The toughest writing class I ever took, but I liked Shafer and the fact that he wrote the book we used. He's there for questions but don't miss class. Seems a little biased toward the left, but he did tolerate my Republican slant. Yeah, I liked him.
Great teacher. He gets his impressions of you early on. Work hard, and he will reward you. He is tough, but you will learn alot.
I kept hearing about how hard shafer was, but the class was fun and interesting. I would recommend him for anyone who wants to learn to think. He's funny too.
This Prof. is tough to rate. If you want to learn how to write, he is a great teacher. If you are looking for a good grade, you better agree with his opinions, if you oppose him, you will suffer.
IDIOT!! Very Hard and I Failed!! Did All the Work and Still Failed!! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR ENGLISH!!
Good class, but to many speeches and public speeking, seems a little **** in the beginning but just nice. This class will make 102 seem a lot easier.
low respect for students.
He's very nice but also very demanding and smart. He doesn't have patience for slackers, which made some students mad. I liked him and thought I learned a lot. He should dump the attendance stuff though.

Fantastic teacher but he will kick your butt. If you really want to learn to write take this class! If you simply want to get the class over with consider taking someone else. He teaches skills that are necessary for later academic applications.A-
He's a good teacher, but you better show up to class. I think his book is useless but he's a pretty good teacher. He's willing to help if he can. Plus he's kinda cute , however he says he's married and yet he doesn't wear a ring.
He's a good teacher, but I don't think that he grades fairly. If you write about the opposing opinion, I don't think he gives you full credit.
Dr.Schaffer expects academic papers dealing with the subject covered. If you dont know how to write a real college paper your in trouble in this class.
If you want to learn to write, take him. It takes him some time to see if you're a slacker. Once he knows you're for real, he's great.
i didn't learn a damn thing. It's an easy class but he doesn't grade based on your writting. He pretty much failed one of my papers for no reason. there were no grammer mistakes at all, it was a perfect english paper, but he didn't agree with my topic.
you have to think the same way he dose.if you write on a topic that he dose not agree with plan on getting a bad grade.dont have him help you he will make you change things and then mark you down for them.he is very cocky.Arrogent!!!
very intimidating. must be very capable of writing at the college level.
by the book, boring, uninspired and not open-minded about the writing process. and what's with the rebel's guide to democracy in an english clas? shameless merchandising no less.

tooooooo unecessarily rigid
I love this teacher! He's very open minded and helps you write creativly again! His class is a sigh of relief from most rigid english courses!
What a breath of fresh air. Finally a chance to be creative! If you want to write, this is your man. If you're looking for a way to slog through, there are others. As an older student, I appreciated his approach.
Word to the "Wise" never take a class where the instructor wrote his own book and sells it in the bookstore. Very boring, everyone is expected to be a scholar writer in his eyes!
He wrote a fascinating book, and made it part of the class. I wish I had more instructors who practiced what they taught. Those who can do, those who can't. . . Take his class!
Very fun! The only hard part of this class was being forced to be creative! If you're sick of the uptight "write this way or you fail" english classes, then take him. Greatly improved my paper writing techniques.
Must participate, if you dont mind a 3point go ahead, i suggest re-writing a lot. Take advatage of his policy
Can you believe I got a 3.0 in ENG? In college he wrote a paper about the "Antebellum South" he received a D. In his book he labels it a being an excellent example of... This guy is also very boring. And he does not believe there is more than one way to skin a cat. Why didn't I take Greenfield again
i think he is an **** - he make me hate english!!!!
I was intrested in this class before, and now i hate it. He changed his syslibis 1 week before finals, if you don't think like him your worng, and your grade will sufferbecause of it, we barly even talk about Modern American Literature. I would not recomend this teacher for any ENG class.

Evil Evil Man, He has no consideration for anyone except himself, he turned his English class into a constant political battle, he's wacked and I don't reccomend him.
I am not whining, in fact i like a challenge, however when he bashes my faith practically everyday,...it tends to get really annoying.it's not professional nor right. And I don't recommend him.
this guy STINKS!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM. He will demoralize ALL of your papers even if they are well written with clear thoughts...DO NOT write about history because he has memorized all books by Howard Zinn and believes everything he has to say...he is a very liberal democrat and he will get suck up students to help him gang up on you!
I like this teacher a lot! He seems strict at first but warms up quickly. He is political yet opens students eyes to democracy and what it means. He allows students to make up their own mind. I like that I am learning more than just writing. I like his style of teaching and I feel he gets you interested in writing. I will request him for ENG 102!
This teacher was very opioinated he never agrees with anything you say he's always right finds fault in everthing you turn in. terrible teacher.
He scares you at first but he really wants you to succeed and makes writing creative, fun, and less regimented. Very nice change from some of the others. You can revise all of your papers!
He his my favorite democrate. The problem is I am a proud republican. we agreeded on nothing, but he is fair. I will retake Mr Shafer for eng 102.
Our 102 class was filled with those of us who also took him for 101. So, if he is so bad, why did so many of us want to retake him? I still want him to go deer hunting with me. Give up the vegetarianism, Doc.
The best teacher I have ever had. I was used to being told I couldn't write, but I realized I just wasn't writing the way my last teacher wanted me to. In Shafer's class you have some say in how and what you write, and he let's you revise. He's a nice guy too.

I found if you weren't a vegetarian, he didn't care what you thought! He favored students that had the same lifestyle as him, or that had taken another class with him.
Dr. Shafer informed me during the third week of his class that I had horrible writing skills, and that I should be put in one of the remedial classes. Shortly after dropping his class, I took the advanced English placement test, and placed into English 102, being one of the first people in several years to actually test out of English 101. Not only is he overly opinionated as a teacher, he confuses his English class with Political Science. Avoid him, and save yourself the frustration.
I missed some the first few days of class because of a death in family and from being in the doctors. Wouldn't even let me make up a paper. I had to withdraw from the class. Thanks a whole lot.
Took this class over the summer. The guy is a total quack. He thinks that english class is poli sci and if you don't agree with him, you're wrong. I ended up with a 3.0 but he was by far the worst teacher I've encountered. Next summer I'll go to U of M- Flint.
You will not find an easier english instructor. Yes he is opinionated, but that never got in the way of my paper and writing. I hate english and I am horrible at writing, but he allows you to revise your papers for a better grade. I ended up with a 4.0 when i would have gotten a 2.5 if I were not allowed to revise.
Not that the subject was difficult but he puts a huge political spin into every topic and if he doesnt agree with it its wrong, back any conservative topics and you'll be lucky if you pull off a 2.0 ... dont bother asking for his help either.
It's the first class I actually looked forward to attending. That sounds corny but it was a good combination of discussion with workshops. You'll learn to write and its cool that he's written so many books. He likes teaching. It shows.
too busy trying to push his liberal political agenda to help, DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR
I enjoyed this class and recommend it to anyone forced to take 102. Dr Shafer does an excellent job of selecting interesting topics for papers and challenging his students. Beware though, he has specific expectations and if they aren't met he will give a failing grade or no credit at all. I got as 4.0, but I did work my butt off for it.
By far the best professor I had at Mott. Very interesting discussionsand lots of chances to revise.
nice teacher. If your a slacker goiong to school for the financial aid money you don't want to take his class. If you actually want to learn somthing than he will teach you alot. And yes he is very left wing.
I took 101 &102 with Greg. He is awesome. We were on opposite sides of everything which made class interesting! I got a 4.0 in both classes. I am very conservative and he is liberal, but he grades on WRITING skills. The politics inspire passion & he appreciates that, no matter what side you are on. He is willing to help if you are willing to as
This isn't a class for the slacker. Shafer won't tell you what to write but gives you problems to solve through your writing. I felt like I was really tested and am ready for any class. Excellent professor!
he was absolutely horrible he didnt take time to make the clarity of his assignments clear, nor was he far in his grading, if you were completely opposite of him he graded you better, if you were completely like him(liberal) he also graded better, but if you took opposite opinions on different topics he ripped u for it, watch out tho he takes sides
AWESOME PROFESSOR. lOTS OF KNOWLEDGE...
I am not a good writer and probably would have ended up with a B or C in someone elses class, but Greg Shafer lets you revise and tells you exactly what you are doing wrong so you can get a better grade. Because of that, I ended up with an A. His class isnt easy and he makes you talk about issues that are important today.
An excellent professor, he IMO earned the title of "Dr.". His class was challenging, but fair. Yes, he does lean left on some issues, but I didn't feel he took into account the P.O.V. of the paper/student when grading. It is possible to get 4.0 on a paper that goes against his views. I earned a 4.0 on a paper that was Anti-Animal Rights.
You work hard for your grade. He allows you to rewrite your papers. He even allows you to trade papers with others in the class to get feed back to make your paper better. There arent that many papers, either. The only things I disliked was the little presentation, but get to do it from your seat, and its NOT hard. I hate/fear presentations!
He is a GREAT teacher. This is not a class for slackers though. he makes you think and brings in topics that one can feel strong about. Come in with an open mind and attend the class, if you don't you will feel lost. If you are serious about your studies and actually want to get something out of an english course, I DEFINATELY RECOMEND THIS CLASS!!
not very good
This teacher rocks. He likes to put people on the spot but that is because he wants the best out of you. Nothing wrong with that! He allows rewrites on all the papers and makes himself widely available for assistance. I recomend him. The person who wrote "not very good" probably did take the class sieriously.
He's a very good teacher. I'm still in high school taking this class and I didn't have a problem with it. He is very hard with grading, but he does let you re-do papers and he stays afer class and is very willing to help. Dr. Shafer was a good experience for my first college class and his class has definitely improved my writing!
Shafer rules! thats all there is too it. sure, the grading is tough, but attendance isnt manditory, theres no final, and he never keeps u all the way till the end of class. i got out as early as 5 minutes into class, cuz he had stuff to do, so he let us go. so if you are good at writing papers, then TAKE ENGLISH 101 WITH HIM, YOU WILL PASS!!!
Very good teacher. I learned a lot in his class. His syllabus is on point with his explanation of assignments. I really loved his class.
I did not like this instructor. His writing assignments were unclear.
I love this teacher, his very helpful
I had him for two different classes (101 & Amer. Lit.) almost 10 years ago and thought he was a nice guy. Unfortunately, I found him to be very unclear about what he expected from you on assignments, as did many of my classmates. Also, his attitude toward your paper did seem to matter more than the quality of the paper.
dont take this class! he isnot clear on work and twists his words around, for example he wanted us to write a ''research paper'' and twisted his words to make it an opinion paper and if we had something wrong on the paper we would have to do it his way, he wants you to write what he says, so its basically his opinion, not yours
I had Eng 101 and 102 with Dr. Shafer and recieved 4.0 in both classes, I believe he is clear about the papers you must write and there is alot of opprotunity for help throughout the class with peer editing and his editing as well, the only probelm I came across is I do believe he grades men harder than women, othere than that fun class!
his critique sessions were pointless, He gives positive feedback, yet fails to grade the paper with the same positive outlook on the paper
his critique sessions were pointless, He gives positive feedback, yet fails to grade the paper with the same positive outlook on the paper
His Class was awesome.. Lots of writing but he gives you the whole semester to re-do your paper so you would have to be an idiot to fail. If he tells you to fix something the FIX IT and give it back. I got a 4.0.. Easy as pie. Another plus is you get out of class early ALOT. I would deff. take him again
I had Dr. Shafer for both 101 & 102, you will be doing a lot of writing, but will be offered every opportunity for a 4.0.
Only take his class if you have a knack for writing. He does give you alot of revision oppertunities, but he expects everyone to write at an almost professional level. He will try to help though at times he can be vague and just not make any sence. He also needs to learn how to wear a pair of pants. I really have no interest seeing THAT MUCH of him
I had a 3.0. He let me revise a paper and told me great job, you earned a 3.5, then he proceeded to give me a 3.0.
great
Dr. Shafer is by far the most incredible instructor. He brings something out of you concerning writing and he really cares about the topics that you write on. He is willing to assist you if you have problems. Hands down he is a really good teacher and very handsome with his ocean blue eyes.
A very strict grader but lets you revise papers! It's helpful if you enjoy writing. If you do take his class, if not then don't!
i didn't like this teacher at all. he lets you revise 2 papers for a better grade, but overall he wasn't a very good teacher. all he seemed to let the class write about was education, marijuana and prostitution. he wasn't very open to diff. topics even though he said he was. if you dont care much about writing, you shouldnt take this teacher
I had Shafer for both 101 and 102. I enjoyed his teaching style. I really like that he uses critiques. Both with other students and himself. He also also 2 revisions out of the 5 papers that you do. I would highly reccommend him!!
I had Shafer for English 102 and really enjoyed the class. I don't normally like writing but I liked how he encouraged students to 'just write' without obsessing over writing fundamentals & rules. You can redo 2 papers in his class (out of 6 total I think) which can really improve your grade. He'll help you when needed too.
I had him for 102. The best, most interesting teacher in the school. I appreciate his book and the chance to revise.
Dr. Shaffer is the best teacher I have ever had. He made me love writing. I had him for 101 & 102. He gives conferences so you can talk about your grade and bring it up if you need to.
I enjoyed his class, we don't all have to agree and I don't believe you have to hate someone just because they don't have the same ideas or beliefs. That's what I found interesting.
I thought he was an excellent teacher. He was really easy to listen to AND look at. I took his class in the summer, with anatomy and physiology and got a 4.0. I really enjoyed my time in Greg Shafer's class.
He's really creative and lets you rewrite your papers so you can get better grades. I dropped another instructor to take Shafer and was really happy with his class. He makes writing fun, and I found myself looking forward to his class.
BEST teacher i have ever had :) His class was a lot of fun. He lets you revise your papers if needed. Easy class as long as you write the topic and be creative about it. loved him!
Nice teacher...just wants you to do your work which is understandable....
For me and several others in my class the assignments were anything but enjoyable. Be expected to write at a level far higher then what 102 might require, almost at at professional level. Expect to be graded harshly on ALL drafts, and expect that whatever comments were given on the rough draft will have no baring on how he grades your final.
BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD AND HE IS VERY HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING!
Good teacher--don't be late.
Loved the class and the instructor. You can revise everything and he's nice and funny. Hard not to do well in class.
Had him for 101 and 102. LOVED his classes! He is super nice and easy to talk to. Cant wait to take every single other class offered by him. As long as you show up and do the assignments, it is very easy to pass this class. I absolutely LOVED him!!! Would (and have) recommend him to EVERYONE!!!!!!!
Loved the class and the instructor. I've never had more fun and learned a lot about writing and the process. He is challenging and the scavenger hunt is tedious but a very good experience.
Awesome teacher, so helpful, fun, I really enjoyed the class, can't wait to take more.classes by him! It helps hes very easy on the eyes too =)
Mr. Shafer grades your papers not on how well they are written, but on whether or not he agrees with your point of view. He often makes you change your papers based on how HE wants them to be. Do not ever write a paper that discusses politics or word views because you will be graded poorly if he disagrees. And many of his papers are very pointless
Pretty easy going guy. Turn your papers in on time, with the peer reviews and what he tells you he wants, and you can revise them until the end of the semester. If you have any problems, just go talk to him - he's more than willing to help or work with you.
Awesome teacher; made writing fun and allowed us to be creative. He's very enthusiastic too. I recommend him to everyone.
Dr. Shafer's instructions are often unclear and he fails to post discussion questions and essay topics when he says he will. He gives little notice on some essays (assigned in class and due at midnight) and he is unorganized when it comes to leading the class in discussions. His grading scale is also nonexistent. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
I enjoyed the class. He allows a lot of creative writing which I loved. The assignments were on interesting topics so it made the writing easier. I would take him again.
Dr. Shafer is an agreeable and obliging instructor. I found his class to be very easy going, mostly because I showed up on time, did the work that was required of me, and participated in discussion. As long as you treat the class and the instructor with respect, you will get respect in return. Just go with the flow, and every thing will be fine.
doesnt use a rubric and grades completely from oppinion of whether your paper was creative not how it is written which is very frustrating when you write soething good and it just doesnt spark his interest
Great teacher if English isn't your first language. I hated how redundant this class was, he covered wayy to much material that we had already just learned in ENG-101. However, my biggest pet peeve with him was that he graded so much based on opinion. It was about whether or not he found your topic interesting more than if it was well written.
He can be opinionated at times but he gives clear advice when approached one on one
In his lectures he sounds like he hates America. He couldn't say one nice thing about America the whole class
Great teacher.
Would not take him again. Tells you to be creative with your writing then marks you down for being creative, gives you grades for assignment but when it comes to the final grade it's pretty much just estimated and based on participation and the grade he felt like giving you
A wonderful class with a fantastic teacher! Enjoy.
Dr. Shafer is a wonderful professor. He gives great critiques on papers and is very open to creativity. I highly recommend him if you're ready to learn! He is fair in his grading as well as his expectations :) I will be taking him for ENG 102
Super helpful, but maybe a little too harsh at times grading. It's more of a constructive critisism. I got to really express myself, and write about anything. It was super fun, and I was never disinterested. Oh, but don't even bother emailing him, he won't reply lol.
Grades based on Opinion of topic, Not how well the paper was written. Terrible Teacher. Would never take his class again (And I got a good grade) Just couldn't stand his horrible grading techniques!
The class was fun and very creative. I loved the book, since he actually wrote it. Dr. Shafer grades on how well you write and lets you revise all of your papers. Fantastic.
Participation is essential. You don't need a textbook for this class. You will probably write papers that are 3-5 pages long. If you skip class, you won't pass. This is not a hard class to pass.
His class should be called Shafer101. He doesn't grade based on how well a student writes but rather on whether or not you write what he wants to read. Not a good teacher.
Some of the assignments revolve around his professional career(ex. You have to do a works cited page and 3 of the sources has to come from a writing from him) If you need to take Eng 101 from him, also be prepared to buy his book for an mandatory assignment.
I had Shafer for English 102 and film as literature (engl271), he is a very laid back teacher who allows students to get creative with their writing. In film as literature he made a list of books for us to use and then allowed the class to vote on which ones we would like to read. Lots of movies and class discussions. He is very nice.
He was my favorite class. He allows you to do multiple revisions and is there to conference with you anytime you want. I also liked his book a lot. Lots of slackers in class but he kept it fun.
I loved the opportunities Shafer gave to revise. Never had a professor who allowed one revision a week for the whole semester. The topics are fun. I have recommended to several friends.
I just finished my second class with Dr. Shafer and was again very satisfied with the way he teaches. He allows lots of rewrites and is a nice guy. I can't understand how anyone could do bad in the class. The book he wrote was also very good.
Loved the entire term. Highly recommended. Very nice and smart guy.
Very friendly, helpful professor. Allows the class to self-manage with his guidance. Grades fairly.
He might very well be the most effective and dynamic instructor to ever wield a large piece of chalk. I had him in the summer and it was an experience that could only be topped by my experience with Mother Teresa, with whom I was intimate for several years. Great teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take him if you want to learn to write, to think.
What more can be said? The man is a leading expert in his field, having published several books and articles on writing. I was personally moved by his latest book, which I had the pleasure of reading while looking forward to each class. If there is a better professor, he needs to come forward so the world can benefit from his skills. . .
Lots of us thought he should run for President, because he is so inspirational and smart, but we know it's too late to do anything but write in his name.. Would I take a bullet for him? Yeah, I guess I would , since I see him as a great teacher and great American.
While I personally did not enjoy Dr. Shafer's class, I do believe he was a fair teacher. I'm usually a straight 4.0 student. Even at my very best, I managed a 3.0. He gave me the same grade on several papers I revised multiple times despite doing everything he asked. I simply could not please him. However I do not think he was a bad teacher.
I personally did not enjoy his class, I supposedly earned a 3.0 from the recent semester but I wouldn't know because he hasnt updated my grades.
I really loved Dr. Shafer's writing class. He's very creative and gives students freedom to write. He also brings a lot of energy to each class. I can honestly say it was fun.
I'm completing 101 with Shafer and will definitely take him again for 102. He is most of all a very fair grader and nice guy. He allows you to revise all papers and encourages us to be creative. Very good experience overall.
Although I took his class 2 years ago, I really liked him. He was easy on grading, but if you needed help he sure would help you. If you have a question but are not during his office or class hours he responds within a couple hours max. Thankfully I've finished my English classes, but i would recommend him.
I loved the vocabulary list. I learned new words and had a chance to use them in my later papers. Great opportunity to revise too. Very highly recommended.
He is extremely nice and personal professor. You can go into his office hours and he is happy to help. I think he was pretty harsh grader compared to my honors English class. Doesn't really have a clear set up for what the essays are suppose to be about
I had Shafer for 102 after taking someone else for 101. I honestly wish I had taken Shafer for all of my writing classes. He makes the class easy and you feel like you learned something. Great teacher overall.
Okay, I'm a conservative and Shafer is rather liberal, but he was still VERY accepting of my ideas and papers. I loved the class. WE argued and debated and then were rewarded for being creative. This man deserves to be given a raise or to be treated to a free dessert at Cold Stone. Take his class if you can.
Bless you, Dr. Shafer for bringing language and poetry back into my life. You made writing fun and creative. You eliminated the boring assignments and let me create meaningful papers. It was a life altering moment in my life and the life of many students.
I feel obligated to tell the world about Dr. Shafer and the phenomenal experience I had in his class. The topics were FUN and he let's you revise papers for higher grades. And we had great class discussions. The class is like a family, so you should take him if you want to be creative and enjoy writing.
Dr. Shafer is a very opinionated grader. If he doesn't like your paper topic, your not going to get a good grade; even if their is nothing wrong with it. No rubrics for papers will be given. Gave me a less than perfect grade on my papers and couldn't tell me what was wrong with them except that he didn't care for the topic. You have been warned.
So this was the most fun ad the most I've learned in a class. Dr. Shafer inspires you to write and works really hard to make sure he tells you what is needed for revision. I'm taking him for 102 and so are my friends.
As an older student I appreciated Shafer's willingness to let me revise and explain the grades on my papers. He's super nice and very fair.
I hated writing before I took this class. Be sure to take him if you need time to revise and you appreciate a nice guy. I took for both writing classes.
I'm taking my second class with Dr. Shafer and I'm writing to recommend him highly. He gets your papers back in a week and always is fair with grades. I appreciate the rubrics he provides as well.
I'll take him again this winter for English 102. His 101 class is by the best English class I've ever had. I like to write again!!! Process and creativity count.
The man is special, an intellectual dynamo, a renaissance man. How does he blend riveting lectures with tasteful humor and still include gems of scholarly wisdom that have been often compared to fine wines? No, I don't know either. It is not for us to question him but to appreciate his presence while he is among us.
I was never forced to participate in class until I took Shafer, and I benefitted a lot from the experience. I would not change anything about English 101, and I will take him again for his next class (102). He lets you revise all of your papers too. Nice for older, less practiced writers.
So I like that he lets you turn in past papers for better credit throughout the semester, but he tells you the first day to be creative, no rubrics, but he grades based off his opinion instead of the structure & grammer of the paper. Miss more than 3 classes and it's a whole 1.0 off your grade. 5 minutes late. Honestly wouldn't recommend
5 min late he counts you as absent. 3 absences is .5 off your overall grade, 4 absences is 1.0 off your overall grade. Super tough grader. I'm a good writer and got 3.0 on most papers and he marked me down for simple things, not spelling, grammar, or structure
His attendance policy requires that you be ON TIME, which bothered me at first but later made a lot of sense. I got tired of people knocking on the door every few minutes because they were late for class. Beyond that, he is my favorite professor. He gave me the chance to redo my presentation and listened to me when I had to see the doctor.
I'm continuing with Dr. Shafer next semester because I loved the opportunities he gives for revisions. I also found him to be both fair and professional. I recommend him highly.
If you like coffee breath and papers this is the class for you. Grades in a timely manner but grades hard. You wont fly by in this one, you'll work for your grade.
He's a tough grader and makes you write a lot, but I loved the class overall. The research paper is more creative and he lets you rewrite for higher grades. I would definitely recommend him if you have to take a writing class.
It's amazing but I didn't really know how to write until I took Shafer's class. The revision process he guides you through is a journey into clarity, which makes him tops on my list. I hope he teaches literature too.
He is a good professor, just involves too much paper work.
The very best teacher for a writing class. He is very relaxed and fun and lets you revise all papers. Beware of his attendance policy. Yeah, he actually wants students to show up. . .
Just finished 101 with Shafer and loved him and the class. he lets you be creative and is himself a writer. Also, there are some cry babies who are trashing him and it's totally unfair. His class is easy if you come to class. If you're going to skip class, maybe you shouldn't be in college.
As an older student who hadn't been in a classroom in twenty years, I really appreciated Shafer's patience and the chance to redo papers. I needed a lot of practice and he worked with me and others in the same situation. I recommend him highly.
I took another teacher for 101 and definitely prefer Shafer. He let's you rewrite your papers and creates really interesting writing assignments. You'll like his class.
I loved the class and always looked forward to it. Very fun and nice professor.
I loved Dr. Shafer's class and his willingness to work with me. I was sick for a week and he was VERY nice. He is also very fair in grading essays and gives you a chance to rewrite.
I'm conservative and he's pretty liberal, but I still got a great grade, and I appreciate his willingness to hear my side. He really makes his students think. I recommend him highly.
He's really a special teacher. I waited a full semester to take him because of the good things I heard from others. Excellent teacher.
He has a thing about attendance but he's a wonderful teacher. Just come to class on time and take advantage of the creativity. He doesn't tell you how to write essays and gives lots of freedom to do what you want.
My absolute favorite class at Mott. He's really cool and makes writing fun. Lots of different kinds of assignments, makes it more like creative writing.
I can't believe how much I learned in his class. He does vocabulary, which seems kind middle schoolish but it expanded my vocabulary a lot and was fun. He also gives lots of chances for extra credit. Take him!!
I waited a semester just to take him, and I wasn't disappointed. I'm an English major because of him. Great teacher!!
I took Shafer for 102 and found him really cool and creative. If you like freedom to go in your own direction, he's your prof.
His class was a lot of fun. Not too many papers and good feedback from both students and teacher. I would recommend him.
One of the worst professors ever taken. .5 minutes late for class hell mark you absent. 3 absences and its a whole 1.0 marked off your grade. He grades on his opinion , I had to change my opinion for many timejust to receive a 3.0. He never warns you when to meet in the library therefore you sit and wait with others and show up late to class.
I have to say that I loved his class. He's very kind and patient, but I got tired of students coming into class late and asking the same questions over and over. (It's on the syllabus, dope). In my country, they'd get kicked out. Keep doing your thing, Dr. Shafer. . .
I took Dr. Shafer's class as a way to become more in touch with my writing ability. I found him to be a true gem, a very capable and articulate pedagogue. I told him that I would love to continue with him and hope he teaches a literature class.
There is SO much to like about the class. I loved the writing assignments. If you want to have fun and actually write creatively, this is your class.
I took him for 101 and loved the class, so I'm taking him for 102. He is a nice guy and gives great feedback on papers, which he will allow you to revise for higher grades. I recommend him.
Good structure to class and was clearly defined in syllabus. Had to do 5 papers total. He can be a hard grader. If you turn in a rough draft, he gives you a pass so you can redo the paper. So you turn in a rough draft and get a 3.5 on your final draft, he will let you fix the errors to the paper. Fair grading. Lots of extra credit. Kinda weird.
Very arrogant, doesn't plan well, if you don't show up you will not pass.
He's a very good instructor. I revised my papers and got a really good grade. You have to attend, but that kind of obvious--right?
Thank you, Dr. Shafer for two GREAT semesters. You're the best!
I had Dr. Shafer for two classes, 101 and 102 and couldn't be happier with the result. He let me revise all of my papers for higher grades, so that helps when you're a weak writer. He's very nice too.
Very nice guy. Lets you revise all of your papers.
His class is a lot of fun and he lets you write based on your experiences. Lots of freedom to be yourself when you write. I recommend him.
The best Professor at Mott--hands down. Read his book and take the class. You won't regret it.
Not worthy of having a class called creative writing, no matter your grammar or creativity on the point he makes you write about, he will fail you on his discrepancy, as does johnny Linn and Ronald flowers. They try to figure your political standing and anyone who shys from the reaction they are looking for they will fail, pushing liberalism in eng
Super awesome professor, very clear and doesn't rush to get things done. You do need to buy his book that he wrote because he has you write a paper on it. Very nice teacher! Emails back fast too, definitely recommend.
Dr. Shafer is an amazing professor. I truly enjoyed taking his class. He provides thought provoking feedback on work done. He challenges you to think outside the box and think critically. He is quite approachable and willing to explain what more you could do to improve assignments. He considers all points of view to assist aspiring writers.
Easily my favorite professor at Mott !
He's a good professor. I liked his lectures. The assignments can be challenging, but most are pretty easy. He will work with you if you are struggling. He'll also direct you to the writing center, which offers amazing help.
Dr. Shafer clearly only plans about 12 weeks of material for a 16 week class- there are a lot of filler days. But you still have to show up because if you miss more than 3 classes he deducts from your grade. That being said, I like that he allows you to resubmit your papers for a better grade. I don't like that we have to grade others' papers.
I loved the class. 10/10 would take another class with Dr. Shafer again.
Fantastic professor. Specifically waited for his English 102 to open after having him for 101. He makes writing enjoyable!! Show up, participate, and put effort into your writing. It's that easy.
honestly my favorite teacher. I hate writing papers and this class made it easy and even somewhat fun. he gives really good feedback and you can always revise your paper and resubmit it for a better grade. the only thing I didn't like is he can be a bit political (liberal) but it's college so I expected that.
His essay topics are easy. His grading criteria isnt. He grades off of what he thinks, for instance, if your topic is about P.E.T.A and you are against it, he will mark your essay wrong because he has friends in peta and doesnt believe they could ever be in the wrong. He did this to me.
I loved the class. Very laid back and fun but I learned a lot. I recommend him.
OH MY GOD this guy is the worst teacher I ever had at mott. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! You will regret it. If he disagrees with your point on view he will grade you down. BORING AND FULL OF HIMSELF. Avoid!!!
I appreciated Dr. Shafer and the way he worked with me during a very difficult term. He is a special professor. You should take him
Dr Shafer is an excellent instructor. I took English 101 with him. He makes it almost impossible to fail. If you turn in your rough drafts on time he allows you to revise your papers for a higher grade. He also gives extra credit assignments for you to be able to earn extra points. Attendance and Participation is necessary for you to be successful.
I heard Shafer was a great professor and was not disappointed. He helped me become an honor student and join the program. I thought assignments were inspirational too.
Shafer definitely pushes participation. At first I was worried about speaking out in class, but because his lectures are inspirational; he makes it easy to get involved. Shafer does not beat around the bush and he is open for feedback and discussion involving pretty controversial topics. If you put in towards the effort you will pass.
I enjoy Dr. Shafer as a professor he's very nice and can be very helpful. His grading is kind of all over the place sometimes. The one thing I absolutely hate about the class that makes me not want to take him again is everything is so rushed. its like introduce a research paper Tuesday you need 4 page rough draft Thursday. Its time consuming
Good teacher, very helpful, just grades on essays, makes you read the textbook he wrote (weird for community college, but ok?) And you can't find ANY PDF versions of the ebook. Seriously.
He does not offer constructive feedback on assignments before they are due and he definitely does not take time to reflect on or explain the grades he provides when asked directly. I provided similar feedback for the course evaluation as well.
Seriously, he is one of the worst professors at Mott. No help for struggling students provided at all. Do yourself a favor and take any other English professor!
LOVED the class and Dr. Shafer. He allows revisions and answers emails quickly. It's hard not to do really well.
Thank you, Dr. Shafer for making the online experience so much easier and less scary. You're amazing.
He makes the class fun and easy to understand. When the virus hit, he was amazing.
Dr. Shafer was an awesome ENGL-101 professor. I would take his class again in a heartbeat. There were a lot of papers to write, but that's most of the assignments so it's not difficult at all. There's a few vocab tests which are really easy and simple if you study. Participation is super important and attendance is mandatory!
I love Shafer so much, as long as you know how to write a paper you will pass this class. He gives corrections even before the due date so you have a change of getting a better grade once its actually grades. and we have the chance to redo two essays of our choice as many times as we want for a better grade.
I really enjoyed taking this course. The assignments were creative and really sparked my interest. What I truly liked was the opportunity to turn in a rough draft, it was returned with comments that better directed and organized my ideas. A tip for this class is to watch the videos explaining the assignments & reading the essays provided.
Highly disrespectful of student work and gives harsh unhelpful criticism that has nothing to do with student work, but more of a seemingly personal dig at what the individual is writing about.
He's my favorite English teacher ever. He made the online experience so pleasant by emailing me right back and even helping me get a book for the class. He does great instructional videos with his dogs!!!
I simply loved this online experience. Creative topics and timely responses. The videos Shafer does are hilarious and really helpful. The class is so easy to navigate. I'm taking him for 102!
This class was by far my best experience at Mott. Professor Shafer provides thoughtful feedback and allows writers to do two drafts of every paper. The topics offer choices and he stresses creativity. Great job of returning emails. Fun videos with his dog. . .
If you have to take an online writing class, take him. The class is super easy to navigate and he provides videos for every essay you do. He answers emails within hours and is super nice. Oh, and you get to revise all papers.
He provided great criticism for your papers. You should watch all of his videos as he outlines what is expected for every assignment. He also answers emails very timely.
This was by far the best online experience I have ever had. Shafer allows a week for the rough draft and another week for the final draft. Videos are part of every assignment and so are sample papers. He answers emails the same day--sometimes the same hour.
Awesome teacher and very understanding and easy class!! Took him for both 101 & 102 because of how much I enjoyed his English !
Super easy and fun class. The videos make the online experience a breeze and Shafer returns emails in record time.
There are very few points in this class so you need to make the most out of every single assignment. He does make you buy a book that he is the author of which I thought was kind of weird, but sure. My biggest problem with this class is that in order to get a 4.0 it is a 96% which is the highest I've ever seen for a class, especially English.
At one point in this class I was asked to choose between several prompts to write an essay about. One of these prompts asked you to write an essay comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. To make matters worse, in order to write this essay you had to purchase Professor Shafer's $40 book from the bookstore.
very stuck in his ways. Not open to others opinions but expects you to be open minded to his. He consistently boasts about himself as the "best teacher" but is not at all that. He lets his political judgment run his class and if you don't agree with his side, good luck. Very unclear in his instructions and very critical grader. STEER CLEAR OF HIM.
Professor Shafer encourages creativity and allows every student to do two drafts of a paper. He writes comments on both, which is impressive. Also, I want to respond to the notion that he somehow is "stuck in his ways." I loved the fact that he was incredibly open to other ideas. He does, however, demand proof for every position a student takes.
Professor Shafer is awesome. You get to write two drafts with his comments to help you get better. You also can do revisions for better grades. LOVED THE CLASS. Creative and sensational sense of humor.
This was the best writing experience I ever had. Dr. Shafer allows you to revise all papers and gives such good feedback. I was new to college, and he made it special.
I'M an older student returning to writing for the first time in decades, and Dr. Shafer made it so relaxing and fun. Thank you for that. I got my writing voice back because of the class.
Dr Shafer is the only English teacher I have ever had that actually made me enjoy enlglish just a little bit! He teaches english a lot different from any other boring teacher I have ever had. He gives you fun prompts on some papers and the feedback he gives on everything is amazing! If you do what he says in the feedback you will get an A!
Worst professor on campus. He is smug, but does not understand much. He does not offer clear grading criteria and often provides a grade based on whether he agrees with your opinion rather than the quality of your work. Do not take him if you can avoid it.
Shafer masks his insecurities with vague statements and poorly-worded questions posed to students. He sloppily teaches and unfairly grades.
Snoresville! This professor drones on and on and does not often engage with students. He makes students purchase his textbook, which is distinctly boring and poorly written. The example papers he has written for class are trite and his suggestions to improve one's writing often conflict with another textbook from another writing class I've had.
Professor Greg loves his topic and shares his passion in the writing and feedback he shares. He's a genuine star.
Prospective students should know that Dr. Shafer loves to teach and inspired me throughout the semester. He is not the guy who just gives grades. He also wrote the book we read, and it was impressive. I gave it to my daughter to read because of the parts on African American English. Great teacher and writer.
I love Dr, Shafer and my experience in his class. First off, who cannot love a professor who has his dog in his instructional videos? And he's a fair grader plus he answers emails in like an hour. Great iverall experience.
What a wonderful experience!!! If you want a teacher who values creativity and success, take Shafer. His book is also a fun read.
This class was taken online and was graded by 4 essays. Honestly this was my favorite class, he give plenty of examples of what he wants, he gives great feedback and was a great teacher, Truly enjoyed this class and would definitely take another one of his classes!!!
Loved this class! The essay topics are unique really helping with creativity. I dread writing and get writers block, but not with this class. Prof is engaging, fun, and supportive. Grading was clear and fairly lenient. Expectations clear, and light amount of work. This class was a breeze!
Professor Shafer is passionate about writing and makes the class engaging. The textbook he authored is surprisingly interesting. Attendance is mandatory, but the grading is challenging - using unstuckstudy ai and ChatGPT helped me stay on top of the workload.
This professor made us buy his own fiction book and made us do a single book review on it. He did not teach anything, just sent another paper for us to write. His grading scale was out of 10 points and a 7/10 was failing.
His book is probably the worst thing I've ever read, of course I lied during the essay. Screwed up one assignment and got a 0 which is impossible to recover from. The essay feedback was one sentence. Glad it was online because his ego doesn't fit in a room.
Taking Dr. Shafer was the best decision I could have made. His book is fascinating and his grading policies are fair. He provides the opportunity for students to do a rough draft, which he critiques before doing the final paper. He's also very creative in his overall approach. I will take him again.
Shafer takes a very creative approach to class. The topics give students a lot of freedom to make the writing personal. I enjoyed the book he wrote and the ability to talk to him online. Highly recommend.
Dr. Shader was great! I took 101 online, and I've always hated english classes, but his is very straightforward. Allows for a lot of creativity in writing, even the MLA research paper is unique! This class kept me engaged and interested, the papers/topics were enjoyable and didn't feel like a chore to write. 2 whole weeks are given per paper!!
Super nice guy, easy grader, and gives great feedback !
Taking English 101 online taught by Professor Schafer was a good experience. The instructions were clear, the syllabus was upfront- no AI, no late assignments. The lessons were very helpful with extra informative videos, no extra costs like textbooks. Even late at night Professor Schafer was available to answer my questions on an assignment. 5 *
He had us writing papers with interesting and creative topics. He gives good feedback and pretty fair grades for your papers as well, and it's usually given a day or two after you've turned it in. If you've never felt qualified to write a good paper, you can definitely write one in this class.
