Great teacher!! Makes history exciting and fun to learn. Highly recommend.
This guy is good at his subject. He knows his stuff.
Dr. Shealy, ROCKS!!! Amazing History professor, very knowledgable, extremely intelligent...in all areas, easy to get a long with, wants his students to learn; however, he is a tough grader. Wherther you like or hate history, after a course with this professor, you will LOVE history!! Highly recommended... very, very good looking as well. : )
Shealy is a very enthusiastic professor. There are no big tests just an easy quiz every Tuesday. (read the links for every week) Midterm is easy if you took good notes. There is a 10 page paper due at the end of the course. The class is very interesting.
Mr. Shealy was by far my favorite professor of the semester! He's funny, personable, and extremely knowledgeable in everything he teaches. I had an interest in history before, but all the classmates I've spoken to have all agreed that he makes the material interesting to learn. Limited textbook use, mainly for midterm and such. Fair grader too!
Possibly the easiest class you could take. It gets pretty boring because all you have to do is sit and listen to him. There are about two papers (one book report/one 10pg paper) and two take home tests. It is almost virtually impossible to fail this class. Professor Shealy is a nice guy, but is very excentric.
Great Teacher, Very animated, engaging.
He is so adorable! He really does care about his students and wants to make sure they understand history. His tests are fair, with a take home midterm and final, and end of the semester research paper.. it's over all a very good class to take. Highly recommend him as a history professor.
Mr. Shealy is a great professor. He really knows his stuff. He's a fair grader and he doesn't expect you to know the subject like the back of your hand. He makes his lectures very interesting, but take notes as a guide. He's always there whenever you need any help in the class. I'm glad he has been part of my college experience.
Take this class. Sheally is awesome. He is like a little kid with add. He runs around the class and gets super excited. There really isn't much work, a simple quiz each week and a book report (super easy). I think if you love or hate history you would still like him.
He is not clear on exactly what he wants for his exams. He gave 2 days for the take home midterm (which isn't a lot of time if you have a busy schedule), and graded harshly. If you think something is unfair, your opinion means nothing to him. He is entertaining and explains history well, but the exam sucked which is the mail grade
I returned to school after 23 years and 3 kids. I was expecting the 13th grade...boy was I wrong. Dr. Shealy is insightful (and a bit inciteful as profs should be)and was always kind to questions and students (even stupid ones). He is a credit to the college and I look forward to taking him again. Thank you Dr. Shealy!
His class was very difficult. He is very passionate when he teaches about history, and some of his lectures are engaging. He is a strict grader. There is also a research paper due at the end on the term. Quizzes are every week and easy. It was somewhat hard to earn an A in his clss. Very interesting course.
He is very hard. He is very passionate about history and I feel like should teach a class that is required for someone that is majoring in History. He graded very harshly. I made an A in LIT & English, but barely got a B on the two papers I wrote in here. Doesn't make sense. His finals were take home, but don't let that fool you- VERY HARD.TERRIBLE
I really enjoyed this class and have since become thoroughly interested in history, rarely do you find a professor who enjoys their subject enough to sit on their desk and teach it as if retelling a favorite story. I give a hearty recommendation!
Passionate about history and interacts with the class. Uses power point but jumps around a lot, making not taking hard. He seems to get a little lost in his story telling. But still a good teacher. You have to do a research paper and the test are take home but very extensive. Focus on those three things and you'll get an A.
He is flexible yet strict. I'm not sure of what he wants out of our writing either, I did great in my lit class and terrible on his book report. Be ready to study your heart out.
OUTSTANDING! Grades from lessons given in the class. Take home exams. Outstanding classroom presentation. Best class you will take at St. Johns.
He's a great teacher that knows what he is talking about, and yes the papers were difficult, but isn't college supposed to be difficult in the first place? Would take him again for an elective, for sure.
Very good teacher.
Love this teacheras a person, could not finish his class. He is not structured at all and his assignments are difficult to do with the notes you have time to take in class. I am not a fly by the se your pants student so if you are this class is for you. Just not structured enough for me
Great teacher. In addition to knowing his subject matter, he his entertaining. He hasn't fallen in the trap of watering down his grades to the lowest denominator, but making an A is definitely possible. He will help in whatever way you need. Best teacher at St Johns by far.
He is passionate and knows his stuff. Not an easy class though. Take notes
Very far left and does not cover major events well. He is extremely dis-organized.
so i took this online, and if you are taking the online class in order to cut down on time, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. I'm usually a busy person who doesnt get consistent internet, and his online class is structured so that its just like a classroom class. He uploads the audio lectures, which are 2 hrs each. If its a few hours late, you get a zero.
This guy is a genius. He knows his stuff very well. A good teacher. Very good at lecturing.
Absolutely LOVED Professor Shealy. Note-taking is required to pass the class, as we hardly used the book.
Syllabus is NOT helpful at all. Absolutely ZERO course schedule. If you're registered to take it online, good luck. The course load over 4 weeks is outrageous. Four or more 1 hour mandatory audio lectures a week, summaries on all of them are required, discussions, a 10 page paper on 2 books, plus an exit exam that ultimately decides your fate.
I took it online and thought it was a good online course. Yes, you have to read and listen to lectures but it is college. Yes he makes you read two books (your choice of which books) and listen to lectures .... but it is college. If you stick with the course i don't see how you won't do fine. Overall i enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
I enjoyed this class, but I really like history to begin with. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I took it in the fall instead of the summer. His lectures are very clear, provides powerpoint to go along with them. If you put in the effort though, you will pass. Nice guy.
I pride myself on being a hard worker and completing every task that I'm confronted with, but this class was impossible!
He was good but had high expectations. Make sure you take his class seriously. Even though the midterm and final were take home tests, he only gives everyone a day to do them. Also, make sure you take notes, because all of the exam questions are based off his lectures.
Dr. Shealy was absolutely amazing, moreover he opened an older students eyes up to "desiring to learn again." When I was in high school, in the late eighties, I loved history. He brought "the love for history" back for me, as an older adult. His lectures are amazing too. Be glad you do not have to use the book, whereas he is more interesting.
Three tests (30%) two papers (30%) and one giant paper (40%). Lectures are interesting but the test are random. I got a 60 on all tests but i did well on the papers. He grades the papers toughly because he has high expectations. You have to read a 1000 page book for that final paper. In the end he bumps up your grade and offers a lot of EC.
He has really long lectures and you have no idea what he will choose to be on the test (there are only 3 tests in his class). Papers are crazy long and you have to read a very large book. He is kind of odd and is super crazy about history. explains things weird but is kind of funny. Lots of article reading, but he doesn't use the book.
Shealy is very eccentric, but still an awesome teacher. He's super passionate about what he does and makes you want to do well. The 10 page research paper is tough, and sometimes the tests can be from left field, but as long as you put forth the effort you'll do fine.
Professor Shealy is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His class work is tough but it is do able with hard work. Shealy is passionate in what he teaches and clearly shows it. He has some odd and unique behaviors, but that is what people love about him. If you are a hard worker I highly recommend for you to take this class.
I've taken his classes for a entire academic year and i can truly say he is going to have a long life impact on my life, his no bs approach to history created a renewed interest in myself on academics. Everyday he would lecture with profound passion and interest on the subject. If you want a rewarding class with a great professor look no further.
Best teacher I've ever had. He's changed my whole perspective on history classes. Absolutely loved him and his class!
Tough but very good and helpful
Great professor who knows his stuff and gives awesome lectures. The class isn't the easiest, but it's college, so it shouldn't be. Grades from history perspective, not literature so don't expect to get through class just by being a good writer. If you work hard, take lecture notes, and talk to him about problems, you'll make an A. Very helpful guy
First I will say that you will have at least two research papers to do over the course of the semester. His tests (we only had 3) are not that difficult if you show up for the lectures. It helped me to record them. He will help you if you just ask. His lectures are by far the most enjoyable I've ever experienced. Hilarious teacher!
One of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures are somewhat interesting but he does not grade fair at all.
Shealy is a good man. However, he isn't the clearest or the most concise instructor. He assigns a lot of boring readings that your are tested on remember certain quotes from. His tests are not the hardest but certainly not simple. If you are passionate about history take the class. If your are looking for an easy a or even just pass DONT TAKE IT.
Greg Shealy is just an amazing personprofessor. I had a lot of things going on in my life and he always had a kind word like "things will get better". His class is amazing and I learned a lot. I plan to minor in history and his class was good for me. You will read and expect to do papers. All and all he is wonderful ! TAKE HIM :)
I will never take another class taught by him. I went by his office for advice about study tips and he pretty much told me I was screwed for taking the class online (even though I had an A average at the time). His final exam for online is done in class, no study guide, just anything you've read in the book is fair game. Dropped it before I failed.
I will never take his class again. I took a break from high school before going to St. Johns. My first assignment in his class I got a 0 even though I attempted it and he told me I should save my money and drop my classes.
A tough but fair teacher. If you are lazy dont take it. But learned more about history than during the previous twenty years of my life.
Shealy is why I started enjoying history. We were assigned a 10 page paper at the start and two 5 pages 2 weeks before they were due. If you can't write a 10 page paper in 3 months you probably shouldn't be in college. You'll do better in this class if you enjoy history, but Shealy's presentation makes it hard to not love learning about history.
Dr. Shealy is a cool guy! However, don't take his class if you want something super easy. We had a ten-page paper, two five-page papers, and three test. I failed a paper and he let me rewrite for extra points which was extremely helpful! He is hands down the funniest man I've ever met; also, he loves history and makes it enjoyable for everyone!
Profesor Shealy is an amazing Professor, unfortunately, I withdrew from his class, I had just returned to college after 20 years, it was more my struggle to do the papers then his fault. he does lectures, no study guides, just your notes. There are several papers in Chicago format some 5 pages some 10 pages. But he is willing to help if you come to him.
If you're not ready to work then this class isn't for you. Professor Shealy really made the work worth it for me though. Hes on the unique side and its obvious that he lives and breathes history but I loved his lectures; he has a good sense of humor. Test were pretty tough and papers were long but if you study and actually try it's not a bad class.
This guy is great. He's clearly passionate about his subject and gives amazing, interesting and engaging lectures that made me look forward to class. Take good notes and be prepared to do a lot of high level reading and writing, and know that he grades with high expectations, as a good professor should. He cares about educating his students.
Fantastic teacher, I just finished his class and I learned so much. he keeps you interested in the lectures and he is a really funny guy. Not many grades though so make sure you work hard
I've never been that much into History but Dr. Shealy made it really interesting for me. Take really good notes or record him because that's all you'll have.
I was waiting by his office to see him a while back. I heard him talking to a girl. He said he thought 1 of his students was so stupid. I just left. Didn't want his help or take him again. My parents and friends said it was awful. BTW he was rude to a friend over a paper so I posted this. A teacher should care.
Shealys a cool and funny guy but Jesus his class is not easy. It's one paper after another and the tests are pretty hard. The only way to pass is to take amazing notes, like I said before though a cool guy that certainly doesn't care about the way he dresses lol.
I'm a dual enrolled student and this is the hardest class I have ever had. I am an all AP/Honors student and his was worse than any class. Lecture heavy. No computer use. Three papers: two are 5 pages and one is 10 pages including a 4 page outline. Don't take if you don't want to work HARD for your grade. Couldn't drop so I was stuck with him.
Hard class!
The professor had no organizational skills. He used lectures and day to day class to specify due dates for papers. There was a program on the schools website that every prof. uses called blackboard and he never used it once for any announcements, due dates, instructions, etc. Pure Lecturing with no use of the book. Do not take!
Great teacher. He obviously cares about his job and students. Very funny
Professor Shealy is very knowledgeable, fair, and upfront. Expectations for his class are outlined the first day in the syllabus- 3 papers and 3 tests. Do not expect to skip class, not do the work and still pass. Take excellent notes, study for the tests, read the required material, ask for help if needed, and you will do well in his class.
Greg's a fantastic professor. His criteria is CRYSTAL clear, laid out on the syllabus. No, he doesn't use Blackboard, so pay attention. You are more than welcome to record his lectures, but you better take good notes. I am an adult returning student, in my late 40's. He's what I expected, & he's fascinating. Oh, & he's cute too :)
He was hilarious and his lectures were actually interesting. He does grade pretty tough and make sure to get the right amount of pages on his papers or he will give you a zero. His tests are kind of hard but if you take plenty of notes during class you should be fine. However, don't take this class if you don't want to put in the work.
Took his American History class last semester and really enjoyed it. He always made the subjects interesting and he is clearly passionate about what he does. Emailed him a few times with questions and he was always very helpful. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to take history.
Dr. Shealy is a magnificent professor. I have taken all the classes he has had to offer over the years I've been there and I wish there were more to take. The assignments can seem like a lot but you get them weeks in advanced. He's always available to discuss any issues you have with class. He's passionate about history and his lectures are great!
Took him as a dual enrollment student, his one semester class took more work and effort then my 11th and 12th grade years, yet I enjoyed doing it! Everything he did made sense, was fairly graded, and he even allows extra credit! The guy is hilarious, not a day spent w/o a laugh. Recommended to 10 people, all loved him. One thing though, LOTSOFWORK!
I took his online history class. Was an easy A if you do the work. Each week you listen to about 2-3 hrs worth of an audio file of lectures and then you read some history readings from the lecture and write paragraph summaries. Time consuming? Yes. Easy and fair? Yes. If you need to reach him, text him. Quickest way of communication for him.
Dr. Shealy is hilarious, and really knows what he lectures on. He makes history interesting for people who do not even care about history. He assigns three papers and one outline, but if you read the material, it's simple. He also loves helping you understand the material in his office hours. RECORD THE LECTURES AND LISTEN TO THEM, IT HELPS
I learn best by lecture, so I enjoyed his class. Many people fell asleep though. He clearly loves history and gets very excited to share details about certain people and events that correlate with the topic. Sometimes he goes into strange tangents. 3 exams and 2 papers. One paper was 10 pages. Excellent instruction.
Liked HIm
Terrible. Uploads lecture after lecture every week without saying anything. Just comes and goes as he pleases. Submitted 7 weeks worth of assignments since the semester started and he's graded 2 of them. Heard he pretty much insults you if you ask for clarification or confront him about anything. Way too much writing for a history class.
He doesnt respond to emails and isnt clear about due dates.. gave me two zeros because I had no idea when to turn in work..
I'll just say this.. If you can't pass this course you might not be ready for college. Wonderful lectures, always available for office hours if you have questions, very clear. I mean, he is human. Some students need to be more understanding.
Prof. Shealy was an awesome teacher. He loves to lecture and is extremely knowledgeable about history and loves to discuss it. Can go off on some crazy tangents, but gets the important facts across. If you pay attention and interact with the lesson, you will be able to pass.
Great teacher.
If you're taking this class and another writing based class I would like to say good luck because he likes papers and is a tough critic
Great prof
Dr. Shealy is a great professor, especially when there's a subject he's overjoyed in presenting. Most, if not all, of the information shared in class is what mattered the most, as we didn't use the book and he went with mainly some Presentations and lectures instead. He didn't make us write a lot, only around five papers in totality. He's great!
Hands down, best professor I've ever had. Nice and very well respectful. BUT get ready to read A LOT and write lengthy essays. Had to drop it the first time, but 2nd time I took him, he helped me through it. It's a lot of work but if you really want to pass, ask for help and he'll guide you.
This professor is incredibly difficult to understand. All lectures were impossible to comprehend and papers graded harshly. Do not recommend.
Talks really fast during lectures and doesnt involve the class in discussions . Very hard to follow. Had to withdraw to save my gpa!!!
Amazing Professor! I have taken one of his classes every semester and it is always the highlight of my day. I went into his class not having a major in mind, and I wasnt into history at all. I love history now, and plan to major in it. His tests are fair and the assigned essays are easy if you do the readings and make an outline.
Professor is very knowledgeable of the content. His lectures are very interesting. Take notes, as the midterm and final are based on them. Expect to write a handfull of papers. He usually grades within 2 days. The grade is based on roughly 5 assignments. He also curves the final grade at the end of the semester.
Probably the profesor Ive ever had. Anyone complaining hes too fast or doesnt explain just put zero effort! He reminds the class to ask if anyone has questions or to ask to slow down. Literally says am I going to fast does anyone have questions on anything like 10 times during every lecture. He grades his papers fairly and is eager to help.
Professor Shealy truly cares about his students. He knows so much about history. You can tell he has a passion for it which makes his lectures great. He includes a lot of great videos also. He is welcoming and encourages you to seek him out during office hours and he is more than willing to help.
Professor Shealy only has 5 grades for the whole semester. This makes it easy to put off the assignments you do have. However, the assignments are not hard. He's an easy grader and his lectures are not too hard to follow. Make sure you read Nixonland with plenty of time to spare before the end of the semester, because the paper is 25% of your grade
People on here that say he is hard are just lazy. Maybe just stupid? He is the best professor Ive had at sjrstate. He literally gives you the whole semester for 5 assignments. Maybe Im just good at writing papers. I loved attending his class too. He has a great sense of humor and clearly loves history. You wont be disappointed in taking him.
You will pass his class if you put forth the effort and do the work. He makes you think and challenges you. I learned a lot in his class because of this. The work is not easy but he is a great, funny professor and I thoroughly enjoyed taking his course. I would strongly recommend him if you are not lazy and are willing to do the work.
His syllabus is old and outdated. There is a total of 5 assignments in the class: a 10 pg paper on a 800 word book, a 5 pg paper on a parent, another 5 pg paper on a supreme court decision & a midterm and final. The midterm and final are no questions just 6 essays ea. He asks you to buy podcasts and will pay for them but he'll laugh at you. AWFUL!
Great professor. Eager to help you out in any way he can. Kind and understanding
While he does more papers he was very lenient compared to other teachers all you have to do is three papers no other assignments and then your midterm and final. So very laidback if you stay on top of your papers and don't procrastinate.
This teacher is absolutely amazing when it comes to lectures. He knows how to make any topic interesting, and you can tell he has a real love for history. For this class I had to complete a ten page paper, two five page papers, and a midterm/final. Dont procrastinate and youll be fine!
Professor Shealy is awesome, very lenient, and understanding about everything. The class is made up of a midterm, final, and 3 lengthy papers. That's it, lectures are interesting and tests are the easy A's. Felt nice to take a class that I didn't have to stress about & have fun.
I loved Shealy! He is the only professor i have had that makes the class interesting. When he lectures, everyone is entertained so it makes learning easy and fun. He only gave us like 5 assignments all semester. I would take him again!!
Professor Shealy is a great guy, in regards to teaching, though... not so much. He loves the subject but just sucks at the technical side of things. He's really unorganized and is not clear in grading requirements. He's very vague in some expectations and punishes you later. Now, this was taken online, so maybe he's different in person. Mediocre.
This guys barely even present and to make things worse he is hard to keep up with.
This professor makes a simple subject difficult. Dont take this class with him if you have a choice.
Awesome prof and good person
Very awesome teacher i learned a lot from his lessons he loves history so much and i really understand all of his lectures. He is awesome professor and kind.
He seems like a very kind person and was willing to help whenever he could, but his papers have no grading criteria and he does not organize his canvas clearly enough. You have 5 assignments, 3 of them being long papers. This class is convenient but only in the beginning. I would not take if taking many other courses. No makeup chances either.
Very nice guy but doesn't use the online website provided to share notes, etc. Syllabus is wildly out of date and he expects you to read a bunch of articles that aren't discussed in class and are very confusing. Is also very lecture heavy and doesn't use any powerpoints, etc. As someone with a learning disorder it was very hard to keep up
Nice guy. Entertaining lectures. Looked forward to his class every morning. I also literally laughed out loud at previous comment that said he doesnt use PowerPoint. He uses then every single day and goes through about 15 slides a day.
Not an average history class, dont take if you dont love history
I truly don't understand how there are so many awful things said! He was such a wonderful professor to have he made me laugh and was always extremely interesting during his lectures and would even teach us fun facts ( which is what helped me learn the most) He used PowerPoint every single day and all the paper topics were interesting!
Freaking love this man! Awesome professor! 100% recommend
This man is amazing, he makes the class so cool by diving into things you never knew before. He knows everything about everything and I had him for a night class. You do want to take notes but that's about it. You get a few assignments. I loved him!
RUN! His communication is awful. His syllabus is unclear & frankly horrible (He posted a Spring syllabus in the Fall semester). He gave me a 0 on a paper on the last day withdraw (I had an A otherwise).Due to this & how awful everything he did was I withdrew. He emailed me back later stating that he put the 0 as a place holder & he was still grading..
Great guy. Always able and willing to help. He is awesome
This guy is funny. Great lectures and will always be there to help you and extend if something comes up in your life.
Professor Shealy was an amazing teacher. He was very funny and gave extensive help on all assignments if needed. He is not a harsh grader which everyone likes, and i definitely would take this course again or recommend it to anyone ready to learn in a fun environment.
Prof. Shealy is a nice teacher and very passionate about history. I took notes, but ended up not needing to study them for the midterm or final. No homework, just two papers (both about 5 pages), and a final paper (10 pages), all mentioned in the syllabus. Overall it was a very easy class, but may be a little harder for those with trouble writing.
This course is as simple as it gets: 3 hours of extraordinary lectures on some weeks, with some weeks as work weeks on the papers (2 research, 1 book report & outline for this paper, and midterm / final). Midterm and final are open book and longer, but this is where you can pop out the textbook (reading's aren't required).
Professor Shealy is an awesome professor. The only assignments we had were 6 essays throughout the whole semester. There is a critical book review on 2 books. He gives great feed back on essays and helps you whenever you need it. Definitely recommend to take his class!
"He had a unique ability to teach and test us on principles, not dates...[Dr.Greg Shealy] was the very embodiment of this idea...whose fiery descriptions often made us forget the present as he conjured us back into days long past, and how he could take dry, historical memories from the mists of centuries and transform them into living experiences."
Would not recommend this professor to my worst enemy. Provides no feedback when he issues a poor grade for an assignment I worked very hard on. Does not respond to emails. No assignments or homework to help boost grade just massive essays. He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. To even call him a teacher is reaching. Avoid this professor
An absolutely fantastic professor
Great teacher, lecture-heavy, and rambled off topic. only 4 tests throughout the whole class and attendance was mandatory. I would take his class again.
Good amount of reading will be done, though its not as bad as you might think. I really enjoyed the professors attitude. He speaks from a deep well of knowlege and understanding of history and it may take a while to try to get on his level though is down to earth and very caring. I would suggest recording his lectures for review later. Deepbreath
He is a genuinely nice person who is understanding. He knows more about his subject than any other teacher I have ever had. Makes the subject fun. A great prof.
He is great. Believe me. He will take care of you. He isnt trying to hurt your grades and he has the best lectures I've ever heard.
I loved Professor Shealy and won't forget him. He makes boring topics interesting. He says that writing helps students understand the subject, which is fair. I believe he transferred from Princeton, but surprisingly he's lenient with time and grades. He really cares about his connections with students because he transferred to a community college.
Professor Shealy is a lively lecturer who makes history engaging. While the workload is reasonable, his grading can be tough. Using Unstuck study alongside the assigned readings helped me prepare effectively for the papers and exams.
Outstanding course and be ready to study
Doesn't use Canvas, a textbook, or homework. Be prepared to take lots of notes, and write down as much as you can from what he says. His lectures aren't really from a PowerPoint. Read the syllabus to prepare for the writing assignments he gives, which can be 5-10 pages long. Knows his stuff, enthusiastic. Attendance is needed! Study!
