Very hard teacher. Use to teach at Stanford Univ. Tests are awful.
Very worthwhile prof, any class!, very compelling man, married (darn)
Don't take this class unless you want to LEARN some anthropology!!

immature, yells when mad
strange man, good prof., hard tests, don't miss class, no atten., don't buy book
He is a bit strange, but a good professor. Go to his classes.
just a bunch of random facts, weird guy, only good thing about it is the curve
This is the professor's evil twin brother who has aliases.
Very intelligent teacher, makes class interesting and fun, very helpful, but test midterm and final are essays
hard class, finals are essays. I worked hard for my B but left the class with lots of knowledge. An overall great class if Anth is your bag. Students that rag him should not be at a university
Smart guy, interesting lectures, takes and answers questions in class. Tests are not too difficult if you keep up with your work. UNCC needs more teachers like him.
Good class, must attend lecture since about 70% on test. Read chapters to obtain concepts, some questions from book. He's more concerned about concepts than details. Excellent knowledgable teacher uses examples to convey idea
In my opinion, the guy is a model professor. Seems a bit aloof at first but he is actually very engaging after class. Other teachers should aspire to be like him.
hes BORING his class is BORING. his tests are hard as hell. u have to go to class and PAY ATTENTION to understand his tests. to be honest ive never struggled so bad in an intro class ever. so becareful. One mroe thing is that he reminds me of a NEANDERTHOL
the professor must have forgotten he was teaching an INTRO level class. Have to put way too much time into this class. Well good luck in the UNDERTAKER look-a-like's class! Hopefully he won't do some wrestlin moves on yA!
If you attend class, and use his study guide you can do well on his test. He is a little dry, but he try's to make Anthropology interesting.
no this class sucks
Sexy, funny, intelligent.
Yikes - difficult if you are not a clone of him. Frusterating class. I would not recommend this class - but he is the only one who teaches it and it is required for the ANTH major. Oh well, at least it's over...
If you are into school and like teachers who know and love their work, this guy is for you. He isn't easy, for sure, but his classes are interesting. I worked my butt off to make an A. It was worth it.I looked forward to every class.
He's awesome, the best kind of weird, obsessed with discussing taboo topics, interesting and funny, and loves being interrupted by students who like diverse cultures. Obviously not for everyone, so don't listen to those who write him off as simply "w
Strange. Tricky. No matter what your work is like you will be graded subjectively: male=good, obnoxious/loudmouth/rude=good. Doesn't seem to care for southerners (unfortunate) and very vague. Too bad since he's the best of the bunch here.
Smart. Inconsisent grader - grades on his opinion of how you reflect him. VERY UNFAIR. Avoid. Too tense, needs blood pressure medicine.

Not that bad of a class but often lectures on materials that are never tested on, so no real point in even taking notes, cares more that you get the general idea then specific facts.
great teacher and helpful
You have to go to class to know what he is talking about and quizzes are on general ideas rather than lecture topics. If you don't want to do alot of boring reading don't take this class, but he is a good teacher for this course, he knows his material.
I learned so much in this class! Never a dull lecture! Prof is entertaining and easygoing. Writing intensive, but material & assignments are interesting.
I took this class out of curiosity. Looking back, I wish I had changed majors. There's no one in the department of my major who even approaches this guy's abilities. Can't tell if he's easy or not. I worked my butt off because I liked the class so much.
Great teacher, very knowledgable. If you love to write (alot) take this class. He grades more on quality of thought than knowlege of material. So if you shimmy a bunch of quotes together with a few token comments look forward to a big fat F.
Very confusing grader. Weird sense of humor and boring as hell. Run for your life!
This guy is crazy seriously.....his test are way hard but I finished with a "C" but I worked my tell off......he also has sudden outburst in class....and he is cussing constantly.....I don't know who is doing the hiring at UNCC...
He is a very good, knowlegdable teacher. Very kind hearted too. Going to class is not hard to do, plus he doesn't take attendence. Watch out for random quizzes though. Overall he is a very good teacher to have.
Rarely will you make an A but you can turn in anything for a C. He is a fun guy if you like monotone story tellers.
he sucked!! i was bored to death, never taught anything relative to the books we had to read, just popped in BORING movies almost every class, got mad if you made a whisper! easy class however but stay clear of this professor unless you like to listen to a monotone voice and be bored out of your min
very cool professor, good lectures...

Very passionate teacher, tests are difficult if you don't go to class but he gives a study guide... so make sure ur in class the day before! Don't buy the 120 dollar book he tells u to buy tho... I never even CRACKED it open... he goes over it all in class
No Comments
if you like to listen to a monotonte, 50 minute lecture everyday you go into the class and REALLY hard tests, you want this guy. he does give a good curve tho. 81-100=A
seriously, this class kicked my ass-and im smart too! if you are given the option of Anthro or Socio, take Sociology. Dr. Starrett is a good teacher and he's funny but his tests are hard! most of the time half of the study guide isnt on the test and the other half of the test is stuff that wasnt included in the study guide. TOO HARD IN GENERAL!!!!!!
WORST class I've ever taken. EVERYONE do yourself a favor and don't take this ****! I've always made excellent grades, only one C in my life and I'm scared as**** to take this final.. WAYYYY to hardcore for an intro class that most of us will NEVER, EVER use! If you want to make Anthropology you're life, then take it..
hardest class ive ever had and its an intro class! tests are the WORST!
Was a pretty easy class as long as you went to each class. Tests were almost all based on class lectures. No paper to do, 3 (multiple choice)tests and a final. His lectures were interesting even if the topics weren't. Easy "X" goal class!
How can people not like this man?? He is awesome, by far my favorite professor so far. Great sense of humor, very intelligent. and grades fair. I ended up with a B and didn't work that hard.
I took this class just for fun, but he is a huge reason why I'm dbl majoring w/anthro.Extremely knowledgable, funny, makes class incredibly interesting.he grades mostly on effort & improvement,he doesn't use a spreadsheet.there is a lot of reading, but his test MOSTLY reflect his lecture.theclass is not easy, but he makes it interesting& addictive.
Not a bad class, but wasn't a fun one either. Likes to stare at people alot and tells too many boring stories. Commentaries at the end of each week on the readings. Midterm and final were fairly easy though. Take him if you like monotone lectures.
great teacher, knows what he's talking about and throws a joke in every once in a while.
Very professional, you will get an understanding of when, where and how different cultures in history lived.
I did not enjoy this class at all. 2 books required, test from neither one. Lots of lecturing that is not in book, have to be able to take good and quick notes. Grades come from test. Cummulative Final=40% of grade. He knows what he is talking about
wow, anyone who complains about this class being hard and such is an idiot. i didn't study for one test and i still got an A. As long as you pay attention and take notes like you're supposed to be doing in class anyway you will have NO problem. He practically gives you the answers to the final. He's really funny and the class is interesting!
Don't know how anyone could complain about this class. You have to be pretty stupid to think it's hard! He practically gives you the answers to the final! Exert an ounce of effort and you'll be fine. And his lectures were very interesting!
Prof. Starette is very hard for an intro class. I would definately not take one of his classes again.
Be prepared to write papers. You will get a good grade on them if you understand what he wants. He wants facts with you opinion. He also wants you to make a connection between the textbook. lecture and other related material. This is any anthro class. Trust me he is one of the easiest anthro teachers
He is a great professor as long as you go to class, the papers he makes you write are based on reading materal, but it is largely opinion have taken 3 more classes with him! GREAT PROFESSOR
This teacher is awsome. I am taking him again for the next Anthropology class. He is very intriging and very interesting. He is more worried about the student learning then the student failing. I recemend him to everyone.
awesome prof! only 3 tests and a final, but covers alot of material. doesnt take attendance, but you have to go to do good on tests. he was really interesting, good sense of humor. the only class i accually liked going to. he knows what hes talking about
Dr. Starrett is an anthropological theory god. I wish the class would continue. There are three papers due and class discussions at every meeting. This class is well worth it.
I didn't really enjoy the class because so much of the material is dry. Ex. Marx, Darwin, Freud. He is a really nice and helpful professor. I really appreciated the comments he put on our papers, they were helpful. I just didn't enjoy the material.
Really a nice prof. Never takes attendance and loves slides. If you don't come to class you won't know the material on the test. Study guides are great. I would take him again if it was required.
Take him! Interesting lectures. Attendance not required. About 80% of exam Q's come from lectures, the rest from assigned reading. Besides the Park book, readings were fairly interesting. How to get an A: Go to class, take notes, and keep up with the readings (just so you don't have to cram last minute).
Kinda boring material but he knows what he is talking about! Tests can be confusing so be sure to study.. Its best if you go to class bc tests mostly come from lecture notes. The final has essay questions that end up being 25% of entire grade. He gives study guide, this saved me!! Just give the effort and read and study and you will be fine!
One of the most helpful, patient profs I ever had. Grades fairly, but material that he covers is hard to grasp for some. Take him only if you are interested in Anthro, and be ready for your world to be blown wide open.
Awesome at lecturing, and shows many interesting videos once you get about halfway through the course. The books he uses are HORRIBLE, I couldn't understand a word. But he grades your opinion more than listing facts, which is great. If you like to express yourself then take this course. Mid term and final are take home papers. Weekly 1 page papers.
Brilliant lecturer, really knows what he's talking about. Ask lots of questions and learn more that you imagined!
very intelligent man, relates to his class. very funny as well. his lectures are always fun to attend to because he really knows how to teach
If you love anthropology and to learn then he is wonderful. His lectures are very clear and he chooses topics that are interesting to discuss in class. But if you are just trying to fill a gen ed requirement then don't bother. 25% of tests are from the texts and they are kinda boring but as long as you go to class you'll do fine
GREAT guy. class is semi diffcult b/c i dont read the text, but other than that i am passing with just taking notes. highly reccomend going to class, although there is no attendance. funny and he makes it interesting
This class may be required of anthro majors, but I'm so glad it is, because it's one of the most fun classes I've had. Almost always a discussion based class, heavy but interesting reading assignments.
Foundations of Anthropological Theory was by far my favorite Anthropology course at UNCC and it was because of Dr. Starrett. I cannot say enough good things about how much time he takes to make sure that students have an excellent grasp of the numerous texts that are covered in the course. He is amazing and I highly recommend him!
great teacher, funny, helpful and knows the material. tests are difficult if you dont study...
One of the professors I've ever had. He is very knowledgeable and teaches this sometimes boring subject in a way that will stick with you. Sometimes arrogant and stuck up but I thought it was funny. You do need to go to every class and take really good notes but if you do that, you can get a A.
He is a great professor. He surprised a lot of us many times with some of the things he would say and do. He is a good professor if you like ANTH. If you are not willing to hear that Evolution is NOT a theory.. then don't take the class. You only have 3 tests and a final and the book is almost mandatory to pass. All together it was great :)
This class is easy as long as you put in the effort. You need to come to class and read the book. All his tests are multiple choice and are 50 questions. This class turned out to be a lot more interesting than I expected.
Excellent professor! He is wonderful at explaining things and giving examples. However, the books he assigns are difficult and required for the papers he assigns.
You need the textbook, he gives you "reading assignments" but I never did them and still got an A. He gives 4 tests and no other grades, but the tests have study guides, study them well and use the book for it and you will be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but really helps you absorb what is on the tests better. Very intelligent man.
Make sure you pay attention in class. There are required readings. I did none of them and still got an A+. The lectures are worth going to, not just from an academic standpoint, but from an entertainment standpoint as well. The study guides perfectly outline the tests, but are broad. It wasn't part of my major, but I learned the most in his class.
Not the most interesting professor, but if you attend the lectures and do the reading it's a pretty easy 'A'. Definitely don't get behind on the reading.
All lecture and readings. There are readings for basically every single class. 3 essays for the entire semester, and the final exam was just a take-home essay we had over a week to write. Difficult grader but pretty fair. He wrote on a chalk board all semester, which felt a little out-dated to me. A lot of fascinating topics covered, though.
Best class I've ever taken at UNCC. It's required for the Anthropology major to graduate and I feel like it should be open to other majors as well. His teaching style makes you into a different kind of thinker and learner. Everyone should have a chance to have him as a professor.
Dr. Starrett really know what he is talking about and it's clear he is fascinated by the world around him. He encourages interaction in his classes. Sit near the front and take notes.
May seem unapproachable, but is very willing to help you out and wants the best for his students. Makes you work for your grade, but the outcome is rewarding as you know you have earned it. is intelligent, and will tell you like it is, but imo that is better than sugar coating something that wont get you credit or anywhere in life.
Dr. Starrett is one of the best professors I have ever had. He knows EVERYTHING and has the best stories. He is perfect to take if you are pursuing Anthropology or genuinely want to know more about the field. You will read A LOT and the papers are not easy but put in the work and you'll do fine:) Seriously take his class and have fun!
Honestly, went in apprehensive about this class but Dr. Starrett made it a lot of fun. We had a TON of articles and books to read in this class, and our grades were mostly based off of us being able to talk in class. I don't remember a thing we learned but it was fun while doing it!
Dr. Starrett is the hudden gem of the UNCC Anthropology department. He assigns many readings, but you will do well if you read them and participate in class. He made me think more critically and challenged my assumptions about many topics. I will take as many of his classes as I can to deepen my understanding of the world around me.
Professor was really unclear about what was required of us at the beginning of the semester. Said that attendance wasn't mandatory then halfway through the semester, attendance became a huge part of our grade. The topics he teaches are interesting, he just talks a lot. His classroom is a no-technology zone, which means taking old fashion notes.
If you are genuinely interested in the topic and confident in your writing abilities, you should enjoy the class. He uses chalkboards and documentaries to teach, but he makes the lectures engaging and the material fascinating. Show up to class and you should be able to pass. However, you will be left in the dark about your grade. 3 4-page essays.
