He's alright. The material is great but his lectures are pretty boring. He grades in a weird way but not too harsh. However, the quizzes are very tricky and sometimes have nothing to do with the lectures. My husband and I audited this course from a different professor before and it was a lot better. I wouldn't recommend taking Greg's class.
I loved coming to lecture every day because he kept it interesting and he made you think about how what we learned related to us. You have to go to class, and you have to do the readings if you want to do well on the quizzes, but I liked that the grading system was simple and the assignments were never too difficult.
SUCH a good professor. His lectures are boring if you just sit there, but he's willing to engage with students and stop the lecture to hash out a difficult concept. He'll also give you points for almost anything-- one kid got points for losing his wedding ring at Holi, and I got credited for getting Indian takeout. One of my favorite classes!
Really interesting class that was pretty easy. Grading was simple and straight forward and wasn't to hard to receive an A. You do have to go to class for participation and then just complete the ten quizzes and assignments he puts online and you will do great. He is also a really funny professor and can look at religions in a different perspective.
He is such a great professor! I loved his class. He is so much fun. He cracks jokes a lot of times! Also, the online quizzes were great. Personally, I hate going in the Testing Center and taking tests. I forget half of the stuff when I enter that cold room. But his method was great! I loved visiting his office and having great conversations!
This teacher was incredibly rude to me. I emailed him to ask if I could make something up, and he was such a inconsiderate man in his reply. He was sarcastic and not understanding whatsoever. For a religion teacher, you'd think he's be nicer considering what he's teaching. He shouldn't be teaching at all. I wish I could have dropped it.
Loved this class. Dr. Wilkinson talks kind of fast and can be confusing at times, but if you just ask questions he is incredibly willing to help you. Don't be the idiot that tries to get around the due dates and whines because they missed class, if you do the reading, take the quizzes on time, and actually show up, it's not at all hard to get an A.
I want to be as respectful as I can in this review but this was quite honestly a joke of a class. In terms of class discussion and material it was extremely interesting and informative but the way he grades things are REDICULOUS! The online quizes are an absolute joke and have hardly nothing to do with the notes you take and even the reading..
Funny teacher. Pretty easy class except the quizzes online are tricky. My notes and the text didn't really help me with the quizzes. Not sure where the questions came from. I would recommend this class to a friend though.
This class was a lot harder than I thought it would be. There was really no way to get a good score on the quizzes, even if you did all the reading and went to class lectures. I would recommend someone else.
Fantastic class! It's funny because you think that you aren't doing very well (mostly because of the dag gum quizzes which are very difficult)but his grading system has a lot of slack to it. I was getting B's and C's on the quizzes but I still got an A in the class. Very interesting and I learned a ton! Take it.
Tests were ten questions, open book and online but timed. Lectures produced very few notes and the majority of them were not relevant to the test. He spent a lot of time on certain religions and then half a day on others that I would have like to learn about
He is passionate and knows what he's talking about. However, the grading in the class is completely bizarre. Also, it requires a TON of work to get a decent grade.
Awesome professor! His lectures are very interactive and usually quite funny. The only negative to this course was quizzes. Questions were usually pulled from some obscure part of the weekly reading rather than his lecture. However, by completing enough of the enrichment activities you can make up for deficient quiz scores.
I hated him. Worst professor at BYU. Extremely rude. Would take it from someone else if I could!
This class opened my eyes to Asian religions and allowed me to view them in a different light. The class is hard. It requires a LOT of reading at times and class participation is mandatory. But if you go in with an open mind, this professor and this class can change your life.
Dr. Wilkinson has great, interesting lectures. I learned a lot in his class. However, if you don't have time to do the readings for each week (which can take 2-3 hours sometimes), then don't bother with this class. Participationattendance is a must as it is a major part of your grade. He has a lot of questions that you have to type and answer.
Awesome lectures. Grading is different than typical class, not hard to figure out. Quizzes are Ridiculous even though open-book, worst part of course. Has made changes in course based off student reviews (So workload now isnt as horrendous as previous posts say). Enrichment activities are great and pretty easy. Participation mandatory (easy points)
Terrible class. There is a ton of outside work including impossible reading quizzes(I would read the chapter at least twice thoroughly and get 80% on average), 10 hours of out of class attending activities, and class is mandatory even though none of the lectures are on the test. Very frustrating and unclear and forces participation.
Seriously easy. All online (Canvas, not Learning Suite). NO REAL MIDTERM/FINAL (pointwise, everything is worth the same). Every week is the same: quiz on reading, enrichment activity (some harder than others, lots of choices), participation response paper from last class period. This class was the most interesting I've ever taken & he's SO FUNNY
The class is very low stress. Weekly quizzes (and even the midterm and final!) can be taken up to three times. I loved Professor Wilkinson's use of personal stories, auditory aids and visual aids in his lectures.
I liked the class, and found it fairly easy. You do need to expect weekly homework assignments, but they aren't hard. Going to class is important because you have write ups for afterwards, but again that's low stress. There is no big final, and you can take it before finals week to decrease that stress. I would recommend, and take it again.
Class is set up as a point system. One open-book quiz per week and one written assignment based on discussion in class Thursday. Can boost your score by doing Enrichment event, 10 are required, more count as extra credit. Easy A if you get a lot of Enrichment Events done at the beginning of semester. Participate and don't make stupid commentsA.
I would NOT recommend taking a class from Dr Wilkinson. He knows his stuff, true, and honestly, the class isn't too terrible as far as workload goes. But if you want to learn about what other religions believe and why, this is NOT the class for you. He focuses on what you think about them. Also has assigned seating. I thought that was dumb.
This class was great! There are no midterms or finals. Your only homework for the week is a quiz, enrichment activity, and a participation writing assignment at the end of the week. I really enjoyed this class.
Very interesting class. No final or midterm, which made things less stressful, and the enrichment activities helped connect with the religions in a way you might not get in other courses. Helped me appreciate all faiths as a source of spirituality.
Fantastic class! There were clear expectations from the beginning about what you needed to do to get an A. It was a really good survey of religions and was a lot like a philosophy class. Dr. Wilkinson did a good job of not just providing information but relating it back to our own religious beliefs and traditions. I would take a class from him agai
He assigns seating and calls on you for answers. If you don't know what to say he will dock you points. He assigns way too much reading and the quizzes are pretty difficult. He'll make sure the questions trick you. Not the type of religion class you want. He says extra credit is available but wont approve anyone's project idea for extra credit.
If you actually write descent responses for the weekly participation you will do well. Get the enrichment activities and extra credit done early. The extra credit helps so, so much, yet not very many people take the time to do it. Weekly quiz online each week, weekly participation write-up, enrichment activites and that's it. Easy A.
Great teacher who obviously cares about what he is teaching. Slight culture shock if you don't know a lot about eastern religions beforehand but you get used to not understanding exactly what is going on.
Very good teacher. Follow the syllabus and it is easy. You can learn so much. If you are interested in learning about other religions, take this class or his world religions class. Some people really like him and think he is one of the best teachers ever and some people don't like him. You will know if you will like him after the first day of class
Expect about 3 hours a week outside of class. Grading criteria is very clear. If you put in the work you will get an A. Every week there is a reading quiz: The questions are posed such that quickly Googling the answers without reading the assigned chapter will not work. 1/3 of the grade is attendance.
This class is amazing; without a doubt the best religion class at BYU. You will learn a lot about your own spirituality as well as other religions. Participation is important, but he's not too tough on those who are shy and unwilling to speak up in discussions.
If you don't like reading anywhere from 60-100 pages of rough academic style readings and watching 1-2 hours of videos each week then this is not the class for you. Hint for the quizzes: Read slowly and look for the most obscure details, those are the ones he will ask for. Also any detail that seems counter intuitive. Great guy. Rough class.
Bro. Wilkinson is a great guy and certainly knows his stuff. If your style of learning involves 80 - 100 pages of reading per week with sadistically detailed comprehension quizzes then this is the class for you! If you are a regular human being and have a life, get the heck out of dodge!!! Also, it is difficult to keep track of all the assignments.
I went into this class thinking it would be a typical religion class. It turned out to be more of a philosophy and history class. If that's what you want then this is the class for you. There is so much reading, and the reading quizzes are really nit-picky. The lectures are sometimes interesting, but mostly uninspiring.
He is a great man who knows a lot about Japan. However, the class requires a lot of reading to answer ten questions a week. It is also very participation based. I would not take this class at a hard time for you. He is a fun guy though. Hardest religion class I have taken
My favorite class I have taken so far at BYU. He is a wonderful man and his passion for the religions he teaches about is contagious. I will take from him again. Everything is clear from the get go as far as grading criteria goes. Everyone is complaining about the quizzes. You just need to learn the system. Enjoy his class, it will stay with you.
NO TESTS Go to every class, respond to every discussion: be done with attendance and discussion points by Thanksgiving (need 20 responses) Enrichment activities - need 10, super easy Pre-class quiz - need 10, really easy Come up with own enrichment activity (he will help a lot if asked) sometimes required, sometimes extra credit, depends on class
This honestly was the worst religion class I have ever taken. Sure it was an easy A if you wrote things that he deemed worthy, but he is an unreasonable person. He seems to hate students, and believes we are all beneath him. So if you want to hate class every day, take this class. But yes, it is an easy A if he decides he likes it. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
This was my least stressful class! I don't know if all Prof. Wilkinson's classes are like this, but we had one reading quiz per week, and our lowest few were dropped, which included the Final! It was also a really interesting class, and he did a great job of facilitating discussion. Everyone was free to talk and share ideas, which I appreciated.
He's a fantastic teacher. In my experience with him, he has been very kind, respectful, and flexible in the way he deals with individual students and the class as a whole. This has probably been one of my favorite classes. His grading system may be a little bit confusing at first, but it's totally slanted to your benefit.
Pretty good prof, comes across a bit pompus, but is actually pretty good once you get used to it. Make sure to comment in class and if you aren't good at/don't like reading then you will HATE this class. We had about 120 pgs of reading per week, with a detailed quiz. No tests though and the final project was pretty easy.
This is a great class. There may be better options for a professor, but Wilkinson wasn't terrible. There's a lot of reading with detailed quizzes to do, but it isn't a difficult class. One piece of advice if you do take him: figure out your topic for the final project EARLY so that you don't get stuck with something random and hard to research.
I barely learned anything in this class. Teacher was mostly concerned with the current world issues, and not with the teachings of the written religions. Not flexible with extenuating circumstances, and honestly pompous--he turns the comments in class back to his own ideas rather than letting students discuss their views unless they were NOT lds.
Best teacher ever. You can take the quizzes as many times as you want until you get an A. He makes lectures funny and interesting. The work wasn't too hard, but very interesting. He cancelled everything for one week because he was mad we didn't have a fall break. That was great. Highly recommend Eastern religions from this professor.
I didn't learn all that much from this professor. The readings were unreasonably long for a two credit class and difficult to understand since this was my first exposure to eastern religions. But it was easy to get a good grade even without putting in the work to really understand the material.
Easiest religion A I've gotten at BYU. There's a lot of reading but you can take the reading quizzes as many times as you want until you get a 10/10. His classes are really fun to listen to and I feel like I gained a lot from our discussions. Because of this course I feel like I understand and respect Eastern religions a lot more than before.
This course is intellectually stimulating, and it's not that difficult to get an A. He promotes great class discussions. I'm confident I'll use the knowledge I gained here. The perfect balance between learning and a sure chance of getting an A.
He's a good professor, but there are a lot of unnecessarily long readings that don't make a lot of sense and make religion sound more boring than it needs to be. I also don't feel like I learned as much in the course about religion as I wanted to. It is super easy to get an A in class as long as you do the assignments though.
Brother Wilkinson is awesome. He knows a lot about about religion in Asia, but he clearly knows what he is talking about in other religions. Not a lot of homework, and while attendance isn't really super mandatory, his lectures are awesome.
I adore Professor Wilkinson! He's so kind and easy to work with, and his lectures are fascinating. The class was easy assignment-wise but nice and thought-provoking. I'm definitely planning on taking a class from him again!
I loved him UNTIL the final project where I followed the syllabus guidelines to a T and he gave me a 50. I re-did the ENTIRE PROJECT & he still kept the grade claiming I didn't include certain things, but the criteria he was stating was not made clear in the syllabus or example project. That dropped my overall grade from a 97 to an 85...
AMAZING LECTURES. Life changing. I learned so much about religion, theology, and culture. I love how he opens up the discussion and has the students participate. The reading is very heavy and the quizzes are hard, but its worth it.
I think professor Wilkinson is awesome and you can really tell how passionate he is! My only problem with the class is that you do UNNECESSARY amounts of work. It's a rather easy class and it definitely isn't hard to get a good grade but be prepared to do A LOT of busywork. If you're just trying to cruise I'd recommend taking a different class!
Dr. Wilkinson is so knowledgeable about East Asian religions, and his lectures are very interesting. There are many little assignments over time, so being disciplined is a must. His class was organized very well: dropped 6 after-class discussion posts & 6 pre-class reading responses. Many opportunities to fulfill the enrichment activities.
Learned a lot about other religions, but not as much about how to relate to them. Wish there were a class about connecting our beliefs to each of the religions learned.
Dr. Wilkinson is one of the most amazing professors at BYU. He demands his students expand their minds beyond traditional LDS dogma to see the world through the eyes of others. He provides an environment at which students can feel free to share their beliefs and questions which can lead to personal, mental, and spiritual growth.
Very knowledgeable guy but would have liked more structured lectures than just open discussions. Lots of reading assigned but pretty much will get 100% on anything you actually do so dont really have to read beyond skimming and its super easy to pass this class without actually learning anything
I absolutely loved prof wilkinson's class! Very open minded - not afraid to take on hard topics and push the boundaries. I learned a TON, but you get out what you put in - if you want to skim by, you could. He's very fair, but make sure you keep track of the deadlines. All the readings were provided and he doesn't use the testing center.
Always got off-topic so we'd never get proper lectures. The biggest project we had was to write about a religion that we hadn't discussed in class AND no 2 students could have the same topic. I got stuck with Vampirism. By semester's end, I knew more about Vampire religions then more common religions that you'd expect to actually learn about.
Professor Wilkinson is hilarious. His witty banter and fun view of life makes the class enjoyable. He has a lot of personal outside experience that makes him qualified to teach this class. Great class. I 100% recommend this class to everyone but especially anyone who doesnt understand Asian Religions.
This was one of the easier religion classes I've taken. The great thing is that it counts as the Global Awareness GE as well. There really weren't any tests, so you're just graded on class discussion posts and reading quizzes which you pretty much get full credit if you do them. You also have to do 10 easy enrichment activities.
This class was great! No tests, no final, literally just a bunch of writing assignments. Easiest class at BYU aside from MUSIC 201/202. Wilkinson assigns wayyy too much reading but you can still do fine in the class without reading much. Wilkinson is a chill guy but can randomly get a temper sometimes. I definitely recommend this class.
1/3 grade is Pre class discussion commentary on a topic, 1/3 is post class commentary, and 1/3 is experience assignments (called EAs). Some EAs are going out eat, some are life changing cinema, all together UNFORGETTABLE enjoyable experience. It reset my life and truly enlightened me. FINAL is very passable and optional based on your performance.
NO TESTS. Just reading quizzes (open book, short response questions) and online class discussion posts and some other assignments (most of which involved watching movies or meditating). This was a great class to learn about Eastern religions and Prof Wilkinson totally recognizes that his class isn't the highest priority for his students.
Prof Wilkinson is super chill! Everything gets to basically be done on your own time and there are no tough essays or exams. Quizzes all open book, mainly just 1 essay question. He's super nice and definitely knows his stuff.
As far as the work schedule and reading, look at the other reviews. They are all pretty accurate. But, he is the kind of professor that Holland was talking about, if you know what I mean. He recently said that Oprah Winfrey was the greatest evangelical of the Modern Age. His views are not in line with the school as a whole, take that as you will.
Pretty easy, doesn't have a final. The reading is pretty heavy but you can skim it and still get an A :)
When I first was attending his class, I was smitten. Eventually, the hype died down and his lecture style started to get on my nerves, but the content that he presents and the immersion you're supposed to have into these cultures and religions was unironically life-changing. But it may be the content more than the professor if you know what I mean.
Professor Wilkinson changed my perspective on life and the gospel. I learned to think about my faith in a new, stronger, way. Each lecture was thoughtful and academic. Don't take his class if you aren't prepared to be open-minded, but if you are, TAKE IT! Also, prepare to skim a lot of long readings. The classwork itself isn't hard.
Honestly an easy class, but grading is all over the place. Mostly in the sense that for things I've turned in weeks ago haven't been graded, but stuff that has been turned in a day ago is graded. There isn't really a way of knowing exactly where you are in the class. Sometime class discussion topics are vary vague, even if you attended and read.
This course was my break between overly difficult engineering classes. I looked forward to class discussions every time and the openness of Dr. Wilkinson. I took the class for his expertise in east Asia religions and was not displeased.
I'm not kidding when I say this class changed my life. It was the best religion class I've taken, and one of my favorites overall at BYU. Prof Wilkinson is extremely kind and passionate about the subject. The readings, documentaries, lectures, etc were extremely impactful to me. I learned so much about myself and my beliefs. Take this class!!!
Easiest A ever, but man was this class useless. I thought I would learn about the basics of Eastern religions, not the case. This class is just a meditation and reading method practicum, which can sometimes be cool and sometimes be super boring. I couldn't tell you the basic tenets of Buddhism or Confucianism though, he goes way too deep.
Religion classes have typically been a chore that I have to do to get through school. Professor Wilkinson made me excited to study religion. Assignments make you think deeply. He is a very generous grader. I've taken both RELC 351 and RELC 358 from him. I have more faith in the gospel and in humanity after taking his class. Life changing.
EASY A. He is a generous grader once you find out the format that he expects the reading quiz prompt responses to be in. Drops a lot of the grades, so it is pretty easy to get a 100%. Make sure to come to class too. Very fun professor and cares about his students.
I love Dr. Wilkinson. He is my favorite professor at BYU. I took both of his classes because he is so funny, intelligent, and a deep DEEP thinker. His class is really easy to get a good grade in if you simply do all of the assignments. I learned so much from him, he is really fun to talk to. There is no real final in the class, very light workload.
Super caring, genuine professor. Very interesting, great classroom management, clear assignments, no final, no papers, grade is practically entirely reading/meditation reflections and reading quizzes.
This was an easy class, but his grading is all over the place. It feels like he puts in random grades and makes general comments such as "engage the source more broadly." In other words, you don't know how he will grade your work and provides no helpful feedback. On the bright side, no exams!
Professor Wilkinson is super pretentious and cares more about using big words than actually teaching you about Eastern religions. Grading criteria is super unclear, and he leaves vague comments like "engage the reading more". Sometimes he takes points off without even leaving any comments. I would not recommend this class to anybody.
Daily assignments in addition to writings on your readings and class discussions. Assigns a ton of work on vague topics and then grades harshly without giving specific feedback (only vague responses). Makes you do some weird meditations and stuff in class. Don't take if you want an engaging, fun, or interesting class. Good class to be bored in.
I took Eastern Religions from Prof. Wilkinson hoping to get an overview of the largest/most widely practiced religions in the Asian Subcontinent, but at best, I got a brief on Japanese culture and did a lot of meditation. His grading is all over the place and he gives vague feedback such as "engage the text more broadly". Easy, but disappointing.
His eastern religions class was fascinating and he is very respectful and open-minded, something you don't get in religion classes very often. However, he doesn't define things well, his reading quizzes are pretty hard, and I felt like the class demanded a lot of attention. When it comes down to it, I would still take it from him!
Dr. Wilkinson was a fun teacher, but there is actually a lot of work for this class. We spent a lot of time talking about meditation in its various forms, and the reading quizzes were tough. I would only recommend this class if you're genuinely interested in trying out lots of different meditation practices with a little bit of doctrine teaching.
Wilkinson knows his stuff. He is very sympathetic and understanding to people of all cultures and backgrounds. He did a good job of highlighting both strengths and weaknesses of the world religions. The LDS faith was also analyzed for strengths and weaknesses. Great class for learning about religion from a purely scholarly point of view.
Prof Wilkinson is not super accessible outside class, and the only way you can contact him is through canvas. He's not super willing to work with you if you're having issues with homework or personal problems. There are class discussions, reading quizzes, and lots of enrichment activities that take a good amount of time to do. & there's no exams!
He uses a lot of jargon and sometimes makes up words or uses them incorrectly, so it's hard to know what he's asking for in his questions. He also assigns a ton of readings. I had surgery during the semester so I couldn't come to class, and he never responded to me and gave me 0 points for the days I missed. Overall just kind of an annoying class.
Professor Wilkinson is a seriously knowledgeable world religions professor and his lectures feel like religious philosophy lectures. It's a great class if that kind of thing is exciting to you. The homework assignments and "tests" are also very even-handed in how they are graded. Each question on tests and homework is a written response.
I thought that world religions would be a super interesting class where we learn a ton about world religions. It felt more about the theory of religion than the religions themselves. If you are looking for an easy A though, this class is easy. There are no exams and your grade is just activities, discussions, and reading quizzes.
He teaches like we already took a pre-requisit class. Complex terms that don't make sense. Tough grader and doesn't explain why. I wanted to learn about eastern religions, I learned nothing.
Very clear that he knows what he is talking about, super funny, great lectures. Reading and writing heavy - reading about 40-50 pages/week and writing two short essays about readings, but they are interesting, that is pretty much the only homework. Also NO TESTS.
Very engaging and dynamic lectures. Attendance not required but class discussions are graded and the prompts come from the lecture. Assignments are all easy and straightforward. No exams or tests and he's flexible with grades depending on how many extra enrichment activities you do.
There are no tests in this class. Just activities and short essays due before class
The way Prof. Wilkinson set the class up and the content made it my favorite religion course at BYU (and I'm a senior). Reading heavy class, but worth it. I learned a lot. He's chill, funny, and open-minded. Apparently, today was the last day of class since since he cancelled class on the last day. I would've clapped for him.
One of the best religion classes I have taken. Readings and short essays before class and a class discussion, and activities for each unit. He sparked really interesting conversations and was overall an easy but engaging class. Definitely take this for a religion credit. NO TESTS!
Professor Wilkinson is awesome. No doubt. Super engaging and fun lectures. Not an overwhelming amount of work, but a lot of cool opportunities. Would 100% recommend, I do not think I could have taken a better religion elective.
