She's great. Don't take ENG 200 with her if you are against reading too much into stuff .

Super hot and let me complete the course even after I had missed too many classes if I promised not to miss any more.
Every darn story is about "rich white male oppression." I really mean every story. Lacks diverse views!
shes really helpful but if i hear another story about the great gatsby i'll shoot myself. i hated turning in the portfolio anyway
Super hot. Hard teacher, but as I wrote, super hot, so it doesn't really matter.
a little bit harder, but extremly hot

Great teacher for 101 and 200. Definately take her!!
Very intelligent woman, and a great teacher. If you don't do well in her class, it's because you didn't make an effort. She is a wealth of knowledge, and welcomes you when you approach her with questions or for help. And she's beautiful!
Ms.Comba is a wonderful teacher and she is very helpful. She is a very understanding teacher, and she works with you. I took this class in summer school so this was easier as in it was the only class I had to worry about. But overall she is the best!!!!!
GREAT TEACHER
She made the big paper extremely easy to write. I had 15 pages before I'd even realized it. Great teacher for 200
Gretchen is incredible. She helps you to look at and explain things with depth, clarity, and style. I took a lit class of hers. We would read the story before the class, do a little write-up to analyze it, go to class, and talk about the piece the whole time. She made my Freshman year awesome!
Awesome teacher and recommend her to everyone. She is very helpful and encouraging. Definitely take her class; you'll be glad you did.
She is a Mean Hot Feminist. Boy was the class worth it. Almost failed me; only made her hotter.
WOW shes a hottie, but not only that she was an amazing teacher who helped me throught the process...and i actually went to class only because i could stare at her every other day...SHWING
She was very nice and very interesting.
i totally disagree. if you're late more than a few minutes, she kicks you out and counts it as an absense. if you don't have your hw, she kicks you out and counts it as an absense. and after a couple absenses your grade drops. after 6, you fail. plus all she ever talks about is her stupid novel.
Gretchen is an incredible teacher. She made me want to be a better writer, not just for a good grade, but for my own satisfaction. She has a contagious passion for writing and literature and she is a very insightful woman. She will always help you with whatever you need.
Gretchen is wonderful. If you have a punctuality problem, don't take her class. And if you tend to slack off, you'd better go somewhere else. But otherwise, definitely take her--she's awesome and will help you in any way she can. Listen to her--she definitely knows what shes talking about.
I think gretchenis an amazing teacher for 200. She is sooo helpful and interested in her students, and always willing to put extra hours in to assist you in the entire writing process. VCU needs more teachers like her.
Worst college experience I've had yet.If you're writing consists of feminist issues or bashing "the man" then you'll get along famously w/Ms Comba.Otherwise she is a cold, unapproachable, tempermental biggot who is completely incapable accepting viewpoints which don't match her own.She was quite unprofessional and far from helpful.
Gretchen can be pretty hard. Just be willing to "modify" what you write, even if you think she's wrong. It's about playin' the game! As long as she's happy, you'll be happy. And you'll be happy seeing lots of her cleavage on a daily basis(or at least when its warm outside!)
Ms. Comba is a great teacher. I was worried because I've heard really bad things about 101, but Ms. Comba actually made the class fun. She's very helpful and knows the writing basics, which she communicates thoroughly and effectively. Plus, she's super nice and will really get you excited about writing. Great teacher!

she was not helpful to me at all. when she made comments on my paper that i didn't understand, she wouldn't clarify the comments for me. i dreaded goin to her class.
Mrs. Comba is awesome. She is very, very helpful, very positive and a sweet person too. She was good about making everyone feel comfortable. And guys she is really pretty. I would reccomend this teacher to everyone.
Ms. Comba is the best English teacher I've ever had! She's helpful, open-minded, and creative. She really helped me with my research and I learned a lot about writing from her.
She was a very helpful teacher. I felt that she really helped my writing skills. Be prepared to work hard in the class. Hard work pays off. My skills have increased 10 fold.

Some guy must have hurt this chick a long time ago. Do not take her class if you are a man, or a woman who comes from a happy home. Gretchen will make absolutely sure that you're not interested in writing something that will intrude on her biases. She's very sensitive and acts like a child if she's challenged. Good job VCU!
Ms. Comba is a pretty cool teacher. I think she made the research assignment very technical, which at times made her requests difficult to understand. By the end, it all came together. She was helpful and free with advice, and she's definitely passionate about writing.

She's probably one of the best teacher's I've had at VCU. This was actually not my first time taking English 200, and people, I'd highly recommend her. She's not interetested in busy work, she wants you to concentrate on the big paper. She's very helpful if you ask her for help, she cares about her students.
I just checked this bec. I have Ms. Comba and she's one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life. And I can't believe the crap some student is spouting! Sour grapes anyone? Did you fail the class, doofus? Ms. Comba is an awesome teacher. She got me so excited about writing and showed me how I can be a better writer. I'll never forget her.
Very easy. I heard so many horror stories before this class, but it is soooo easy. All you do is work up to the big paper. She has so many oppurtunities for you to make your paper better (i.e.-workshops, library days, meetings). Highly recommended.
I have Ms. Comba for Creative Writing and she's fantastic. I've learned so much in her class and she runs the workshops really well. If you want to write short stories, take this class. She's great.
she just didn;t help me and made me feel stupid or incapable
go to class... shell keep you on task with your paper al semester...
Not too bad at all, heard some horror stories about this class (and profs from other ratings). Listen, Listen, Listen! If you listen to her and continually edit your paper you will receive at LEAST a B, and you can still get a B on your paper and have an A in the class... Highly Recommended!
Best teacher I ever had! Had her for English 101 tracked her down and took her for 200 passed both the first time. Doesnt make it more difficult breakes everything down easy. If you have problems coming to class then she is not for you. She works with you but you have to be there! She refuses to let students who put in the work fail.
Prof. Comba's class was the one that made me switch my major to English. She was incredibly helpful as I developed my topic, and really pushed me to write the best paper I could. Was great to sit down with and brainstorm and had a lot of helpful ideas in breaking down writing a large paper. Will absolutely take her again.
She was a wonderful teacher. The way she structures the class makes writing a paper so easy. If you follow her deadlines and criteria you will get at LEAST a B on the paper and in the class. I highly recommend her.
Awesome professor
If you stay on top of things, then you won't have any problems with how she structures her class. She likes to break things down, but if you want to get it all done at the start, then do so. She doesn't mind. She may not show interest in your topic, but if you talk to her she will give you input. Communication is the key to success in her class.
I had Comba for Women Writers, English 391. She is great and very empathetic when you have a problem. Attendance is mandatory. Just for fun, she's one of the hottest in the English Dept.
She's a fantastic teacher! The class is structured in a way that won't let you get lost, and she really cares about all of her students. As long as you come to class and are prepared to do the work, you will have no problems getting an A or B.
Comba is a nice lady, she's very down to earth and is fairly young so she still kind of acts like a student. easy enough class, no real extra work, and the way the paper is broken down it isn't really that bad, if you listen to her advice and write a strong paper, you'll get an A or B
Works really hard to engage class and make the literature a personable experience. She is very laid back and open to hearing every person contribute to discussions. As an English major, I really enjoyed taking her class and would recommend it to everyone!
LOVED HER! coming from a person who hates english..a lot
Comba is by far one of the best teachers I've ever encountered. She has a real interest in the students and their well being; and how well they do in class. I would absolutely take her again. Also, she is quite willing to offer advice on personal situations too- which makes classroom anecdotes fun :)
Great teacher! I am a non-english major, and She does understand where you are coming from and really helps you to make an improvement. RECOMMENDED! not too much work for a good grade, but she will give you all the tools you need to get an A.
She sucked. She isn't helpful, her attendance policy is insanely strict and there are only quizzes and test. It's an english class, why do we need to take insanely difficult tests for our grade? Why not write?
I could go on and on about this professor. Bottom-line, she is amazing. I have take three of her classes and have enjoyed them all (all A's too). I am not an english major but bc of her I have taken up the minor. Helps you become a better writer, be it fiction or research. Take this womans class- you will not be sad that you did.
Attendance is mandatory. Took the class cause my friend recommended her due to her easy multiple choice exams but she totally flipped her test structure to something more difficult. Have to keep up with the books and the class discussions or else the tests will be somewhat difficult.
can be rigid some times with question and sometimes not straight forward dont like the quizzes and exam the way they are structured and no multiple choice questions at all
Where should I begin? She rambles on sometimes even past the time to get out. The class consists of quizzes and tests. Tests are extremely hard and pointless. I did not like the class as much. Take with someone else if you can!
She's a sweetheart. Make sure you do all the reading and take care with class discussion and you should do fine.
OMG DO NOT TAKE HER! SHE RAMBLES PAST TIME TO GET OUT AND TESTS WERE COMPLETELY POINTLLESS! THE ONLY BENEFIT IS YOU TAKE GROUP QUIZZES BUT SHE IS ALWAYS MARKING SOMETHING DOWN JUST FOR THE HECT OF IT! TAKE WITH SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU CAN!
Miss 2 classes and you drop a letter grade. Group quizzes are taken at at the end of each book, about 1 book read every 2 weeks. Out of a class of 40..maybe 4 people genuinely spoke up and their ideas are what made up the quizzes. She said herself that she pulls from the discussions we hold in class. Unless you have the time, don't take.
Gretchen is an awesome writing teacher. She is very helpful and open minded. She doesn't tolerate any BS however. You do have to show up to class prepared. Her class is hard but worth it!
You must go to class to understand what is going on in the 8 books that you have to buy and even then her tests are VERY SPECIFIC and difficult! She is RIDICULOUSLY strict with tardiness! So don't be late! Better yet, don't take her class! She is nice however, but her class is just confusing! I dont recommend her!
Excellent teacher in the Eng department. Engaging, cares about you, clearly wants you to learn, and has great style! Tough grader, though. Class came off like an easy A, next thing I knew my first paper had a C stamped on it. So just go in knowing she means to make you learn and work for a good grade.
If you're looking to get a gen ed out of the way, I would definitely recommend taking her class. Books are worked through pretty quickly, so you'll have to do a decent bit of reading, but the in-class discussions can be really interesting and the information that she really wants you to focus on gets repeated a lot.
Great class! She is a great professor. Can not be late to class, but as long as you go and pay attention you will get an A. I don't enjoy reading, but she had us read easy books that most people had already read. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Really frustrating professor. Would not recommend. L a lot from her class and enjoyed the readings, but she graded WAY too hard for a 215. Expected things on the tests that she didn't ask for and took off points if you didn't write the short answers exactly how she wanted you to. She forgot that students haven't read the books 3 times like she has.
She's a great TEACHER, but be prepare yourself for the part where she grades your paper. I think she needs to ease up on that some.
She takes herself way too seriously.
Her tests are ridiculously hard and not specific AT ALL. We just took the midterm and about 85% of the class didn't finish in time. You have to read roughly a book a week and then you take a group quiz on Friday. She's a very hard grader and has unrealistic expectations. Take with someone else unless you love reading and in class discussions.
Comba was an awesome teacher, great discussions, and minimal homework. You do read about 15 novels throughout the semester and get about 3 days to read each book. There is a quiz on each book. Other than the excessive reading, enjoyed this class with this great teacher.
VERY strict about attendance. You can only miss 2 days before she starts knocking of letter grades. Don't bother showing up to class more than 2 minutes late because you won't be allowed in, even if it is the day of a quiz/test/final. If you leave for any reason, you can't come back in. She is good at what she does, just confusing at times.
Gretchen is amazing. She will make you a better writer. If you are not interested i writing, then do not take this class, but she is great!
Tough grader, very strict about attendance, pretty tough for a 200 level course.
Comba is a great professor! The discussions are actually really interesting. The class is split into groups and at the end of each novel, we take a group quiz. The quizzes can be pretty difficult and she's a tough grader, but it really makes you think. Overall, I enjoyed the class. Just don't expect it to be an easy A.
If one is not interested in creative writing, why take her class? However, this woman oozes passion for the short story, for the pleasures of prose. And when the students are engaged, she's engaged. When students disappoint she has a steeliness about her that I suppose some might find off-putting. Great teacher, helpful, breadth of knowledge.
She's phenomenal if you love English and analyzing literature. The books can be depressingvulgar, so beware of that if you've got issues with that. Otherwise, she's very intelligent and it shows and it's kinda sad that her class is only 50 minutes because you could listen to her talk for hours. Also her anecdotesstories are hilarious.
My group has written paragraphs for answers on her quizzes and we have failed everyone. The quizzes are very open ended but she is looking for specific answers. VERY liberal (not a bad thing) but her political opinions take up 50% of the lecture. No phones, no tardiness, no absences. My least favorite class I've taken so far.
If you attend class and actually read the books you'll do well. Some of the books are better than others but professor Comba is great. Her quizzes and tests are straight forward. Expect to volunteer during class discussions but she makes them interesting. I really enjoyed her class.
Gretchen Comba is an incredible professor. You're really lucky if you have her. She and her lectures are stimulating and brilliant. She has high expectations for her students but navigates the teacher-student relationship with total respect. She learns the names of her students and she leads group discussion so it's interesting. Amazing teacher.
Professor Comba is an excellent facilitator of discussion and a very intelligent, kind woman. That being said, some of the set up of her classroom is counterproductive. She only calls on the people who frequently participate because she knows their names, so expect to get called out even if you didn't raise your hand. group quizzes.
Gretchen always has the perfect book choices that lead to great discussion and a lot of knowledge about the feminism that we are discussing. However, if you don't show up to class, the tests come exactly from what was discussed, so find good notes. I was sick two days, and it was definitely was what brought me grade down. 2 papers, 3 tests.
Comba's class is based on group discussion. Her handwriting is difficult to read, so make sure you are sitting close to the front. You are put in groups for quizzes & attendance, and if you are 3 minutes late, then she won't let you into the classroom. Sparknotes/lectures/notes aren't enough. READ the books. She loves her students, so go to OH.
I dropped class when I discovered quizzes were given as a group project. I need to get a 100% grade not a "C". The people in my group usually didn't bother to read the books. Ms. Comba didn't pick up on primary theme of "Lesson Before Dying"; colorism in the black community in this semi-autobiographical novel. Books req'd were excellent choices
Professor Comba is nice and optimistic, but she is extremely picky when she grades her quizzes. English used to be my favorite subject until I took her class. The texts were interesting. Tests are group tests. You don't get to choose your own groups. It's based on your last name. It's easy to enjoy this class but hard to do well in.
She is a really tough grader and you have to read all of her books or you won't pass the class. The class is very fast paced. All of the quizzes are taken in groups, but don't rely on your group members to help you pass because you won't do well on the exam.
You absolutely must read the books to pass the quizzes. This is a very large part of your grade and you are only given a week or so to finish novels that are mostly 200+ pages. Pay attention to the notes she writes on the board and themes she emphasizes as they are an integral part of the quizzes. If you plan to slack this is not the class for you.
Very tough grader on group quizzes. Extremely fast paced class. Only half the readings were on sparknotes so you have to read the book in most cases. She did not have very good control over class discussions. She's very nice but this is not an easy class.
Fast-paced class with lots of reading -- about a novel every other week. You take a quiz after every novel in your group, and though the questions are largely based around class discussions, she is *very* particular in what she expects of your answers. Make sure you read, take good notes during discussions, and don't miss class.
Her grading parameters aren't always up to speed and she doesn't post grades. At all. But she's willing to help you out, you just gotta reach out for it. She's super excited about what she's teaching, even when it's a boring 18th century religious story, and responds to comments pretty well. Somewhat uptight about attendance, but that's abt it.
I had her for 215 and all we did was read, take a quiz, repeat. We read 8 novels in one semester. It's reading heavy (100 pages a night), but the novels are interesting. She's a tough grader for her quizzes, but the midterm/final are the main portion of your grade. She's very sweet and cares about her students. She takes attendance every day too
Comba was literally one of the best classes I've taken here. She's really interested in what she's teaching in the texts and it shows and makes the student interested as well. The works we read were very versatile and were truly great picks. I would undoubtedly take her class again, I enjoyed the vigor with which she taught and her great opinions.
I took her class for Reading Literature was one of the easiest and engaging English class that I have taken. There is a bit of reading but it's nothing extreme and as long as you read the books you will be fine. I enjoyed her lectures even though they went a bit off track but as long as you write the notes on the board you will be SOLID!
She grades really tough and the entire group quiz concept is something that I really hated.
I had professor Comba for ENG 215. She was friendly, however her attendance policy is a bit absurd. You cannot come more than 3 minutes late to class, and if you miss a handful of classes, you automatically fail. I didn't do well, but that is because I struggle academically. Wouldn't be my first choice, but could take her again.
She is a very passionate teacher that truly knows what she is teaching. It is a lot of reading, about a book a week. There is a quiz after each book that is 5 questions and you can pass EASILY. Her attendance policy is whack - if you miss 3 or more classes you automatically fail. Midterm and Final are the hardest tests I have taken in my whole life
This teacher was an absolute bore fest, she puts her main set of notws on the board, but the writing might as well be another language it is so unreadable. However if you do actually read the books it makes it much easier of a class.
8 books total. Professor Comba penalizes her students for answering questions in class by learning your name and calling you out when no one is answering her questions. Attempting to read her written notes off the board is impossible. Taking quizzes (5 ?s) is annoying because she lets everyone get up and leave whenever which blocks the screen.
Prof. Comba is the best English teacher you'll ever have at VCU.
Prof Comba truly cares about her students and she wants them to succeed. Yes, you'll have to read a lot, it's an English course. Yes, her attendance is strict, she wants you to gain the most from the course. She sets realistic expectations. She's one of the most caring professors I've had at VCU. If you have any problems, her door is always open
i'm truly sorry to say that it was easily my least favorite class. The professor wrote notes on the board at all times, and not on the board. Her handwriting is really small and hard to read, so people would have to stand in front and take a picture at the beginning. you couldnt skip more than 2 days or you'd fail, regardless of the situation.
I hated this class but liked the professor. You read a book a week -- so if you hate reading, you probably won't like this class. There is 1 quiz per book and 2 exams for the entire class. The first exam covers the first 4 books, and the final exam covers the last 4 books and has an essay. Go to class, take notes, and go to office hours for help.
Comba is a very cool person, but as a teacher she was not my favorite. The quizzes were SO easy but really do nothing to help your grade, which consists of a midterm and final with an essay worth 15% of your grade. The midterm and final were both SO random and very harshly graded and everyone in my class literally got below a 40% on the midterm.
I love Prof Comba as a person! She is very caring. I was in an accident the semester I had her and she worked with me and continually checked on me. Class discussions are interesting but this class is reading heavy, about a book a week. The quizzes after each book are easy, but the two tests REALLY hard and we were unprepared. SO many people failed
Dr. C was very kind. She understood that we are in a crazy time. Always welcomed feedback on how to help. Made class optional one day so we could vent. Class was easy, we read flash fiction. However, she grades the first paper harshly and it was hard to know what she was looking for. Second paper is to write your own flash fiction about anything.
The class itself is very easy and the only reason why I got the grade that I did was because I didn't do the discussion posts. She does require you to have your camera on for every class but you can tell that she truly cares about her students and the subject that she is teaching.
Requires in class daily with the camera on and wants heavy participation. Professor Combo was very good at entertaining the course and engaging us on the topics of the stories. Two weekly assignments, along with two essays as a midterm and final. Lots of reading, but the stories are fascinating. My Grade dropped severely after attendance was added.
She dumba s
She cares so much about her student's education, and I think that is the most valuable quality a teacher can have. I actually earned a B in her class, but she still gave me an A because I had near perfect attendance and I participated heavily each class session. Her taste in literature is unmatched. Very fun class.
