Awesome class. She is very enthusiastic and makes class interesting. You can tell she loves what she does. Tests can be tricky - you have to really study, but she does make study guides. Great professor - I recommend her.
Worst class ever!!! Tests are hard, no matter how hard you study. I like Gretchen as a person, but not as a professor. I HATE this class. Beware!!
She's ok...the class is interesting but the test are really hard and tricky.
Best 245 professor! Very sweet and genuine...very hard tests though. makes you work for your grade. Classes are close to 200 people but get to know her, she can really help you on a personal level....STUDY HARD, she gives out a study-guide
Tests are hard, but you'll enjoy the class overall.
She is the sweetest lady ever... tests are really hard, but you can do well if you work hard. Has great examples and makes class a blast!
Not an easy class. You must go to every class, read both books, and listen as much as possible. She's an awesome lady and willing to help you out during office hours and before/after class. Tests are very difficult. 3 tests and a final...only grades
I'm not going to lie, this class is hard. She makes it interesting, but you have to study 2353462345 hours for her tests, study guides end up being 8 pages long, and averages are always around 75. Good luck- she's nice but extremely difficult.
prolly the hardest teacher i have ever had, and she loves the fact she is hard, i hate her class, i study for 12 plus hrs and still get a low B or C, class average is like 69, dont take her, she is satan
This class is harder than it should be. They're just trying to weed people out from trying to get into SCOM major. Hard tests. At least there's study guides. She's starting to add EC opportunities, which is good.
I studied more for this class than all of my other classes combined. Gretchen likes making tests more difficult than they need to be. I feel like she doesn't want anyone in SCOM. Don't take her if you have other options.
Not a bad class at all. If you study for her tests you'll do great. If you dont you are doomed no joke. AWESOME teacher and very fun. I suggest you get her for 245. You learn a lot!
She is a FUNNY teacher and i love her. she tries to relate everything we learn in that class to our everyday lives. She is really helpful and clear. She offers some extra credit, and makes you want to come to class everyday.
She's a really nice lady and plays AWESOME music before class....she is willing to discuss ANYTHING too...her tests are quite hard but read the material and you should be fine....notes are posted on blackboard too!
Awesome. Tests are extremely hard so study like whoa. Offers extra credit and takes unfair questions off tests, so that helps. Also pretty funny and down to earth with da kidz. Only class I have perfect attendance in this semester, and there is no attendance policy like most of my other courses!
She is a great teacher, but she offers a challenge. Tests are hard and require a good amount of time, but if you are willing to put forth the effort you'll be happy with your grade. Go to class, she explains the concepts in detail and makes them easy to understand. Shes really nice and funny.
Challenging but do-able. I used to the study guide and really studied for 2 tests and did really well. I did not use the study guide and studied not so much for the other two and got C's. So use the study guides. She loves teaching and it is a really fun class. Just don't slack off, and read.
Gretchen is such a fabulous teacher! She makes the material interesting and still knows how to have fun in class. The tests are more difficult but if you pay attention in class (not hard to do because they are fun) and study you will easily get an A. Take Gretchen! She's the best.
I really like her as a teacher. She brings in films and music. Her tests are hard but she gives study guides and puts notes on Blackboard.
tests are hard but class is fun and gives you many tools to help study for exam..helps to study in groups to get the concepts better bc the stuff is graduate level material
she works hard to keep us interested. tests are very hard, but the study guides on blackboard are a big help. study and you'll do well.
Gretchen's tests are pretty tough, but if you work really hard and do the study guides, it will pay off. She definately has some opinions, but does a good job of keeping the class entertained during lecture.
I love coming to this class each week. She's such an animated professor and she's not afraid to curse in class :) The tests are hard, no doubt, but do the study guides and write down every example she gives in class. I definetely reccomend studying with someone else to really get a good feel for the info.
Test average is about 75 (or "great job!" according to her). If you're a communications guru, you'll probably be alright, but newbies--don't expect examples to be clear. I took this as a junior SCOM minor, got a B- (my worst grade thus far at JMU). Oh, and she swears a lot.
UGH unclear with directions and strict attendancepolicy. Also very hard grader for GENED, take someone else if at all possible.
At 8:00 AM she is full of energy. Works hard to help, very willing to meet outside of class. For a gen ed class, this one isn't bad.
her tests are really hard, but it definitely prepares you for the final. She's very willing to help - go see her before you present! She will tell you exactly what she wants, and then if you do it you will do well!! She's great, very enthusiastic and she really wants you to succeed...just study hard for the tests!
She's a wonderful person, but the material is boring and tests are hard. If you want a decent grade you have to do all the readings and study guides. If you have to take the class be ready to put forth effort to get a good grade.
Professor Hazard is an extremely kind person who is generous with her time. You don't learn all that much during you class time, but she always makes class fun and uses creative ways to help you learn material. 4 presentations, two tests, which are EXTREMELY hard. I wouldn't seek her out to take her class, but you will have a nice experience
Gretchen is not a nice advisor at all. Talking to her is an extremely difficult task, because she makes you feel stupid. She was not helpful at all in helping me decide which courses to take, and she will shut you down if she doesn't agree with what you have to say.
Gretchen is probably one of the best teachers I have had here are JMU. She wants all her students to do well but you need to work for it. Her classes are entertaining and she does a good job in helping you to understand the material. She is always willing to help you with what ever you need. if you were smart, you would TAKE HER!! :)
Gretchen has been extremely helpful with my questions about the SCOM major. She is more than willing to go over any questions that you may have about anything and does want you to do well. 245 is definetly a hard class but Gretchen will help you...great SCOM professor.
her tests are EXTREMELY hard no joke - read the books and go to class
Gretchen is a fun professor and makes class interesting, but she definitely makes you work for your grade. The class has about 150 people and your grade is based on 4 exams. Exams are HARD. DEFINITELY use the Study Mate she gives to you on blackboard . Make sure you go to class and read the book!
Gretchen is amazing. Class is hard and but her lectures are great, one of the only professors ive had that I was actully learning new material every day from the lectures. If you want to do well in communications and actully learn the material and not coast by, take Gretchen.
Gretchen is amazing. She is so passionate about the subject. I had mono the week of one of four tests and she moved it around for me. She is so nice. The tests are hard, but if you study, they're manageable. TAKE GRETCHEN!
Not as easy as I anticipated. Lectures were energetic, and Gretchen loves her subject, but tests were much more difficult than could have been anticipated. Final was a lot easier than any test all year.
no attendance, but go to class! She is so much fun, an awesome professor, for a lecture class, it was very personal, she gives a lecture on the word f*ck at the end of the year. some extra credit, 4 online tests, but dont slack off- harder than i thought, read the book, go to class, you wont sleep through it. ended with a C+
Hazard is extremely interesting; however, this will be the hardest class you take for Comm. If at all possible, do not take Hazard for the reason that you will absolutely NOT pass. The tests are close to impossible. She says she wants to see us succeed, but I find that hard to believe with the difficulty level of the tests.
Avoid if possible, makes class harder than it needs to be. Tests are extremely hard when material seems easy when going over in class.
Really nice woman, very funny and can relate to students, BUT if you need this class to get into the comm major DO NOT take... tests are impossible and she doesn't care that half of her class fails.
Interesting class. 4 tests, no attendance policy, but you will want to go because the lectures help a lot. The tests are not bad, she curves by about 3-5 questions for each test. She gives you all the notes on blackboard, plus study guides. Study and go to the lectures and you will do well in her class.
Prof. Hazard is an AMAZING professor ... one of the best teachers I've ever had. Extremely knowledgeable and incredibly ENGAGING. Make sure you do the readings and definitely (DEFINITELY) use the StudyMate guides if you want to do well on exams. Definitely would recommend her to anyone looking for an interesting class to take a lot from!!
Amazing teacher but ridiculously hard tests. The material presented in class but when applied on the test, it is very difficult. Go to every lecture and study your butt off. She is so interesting (had a lecture on the word F*CK) and fun. She will do everything to help out her students, go into office hours! STUDY STUDY STUDY
This has been one of my favorite classes at JMU- Gretchen is the best! VERY good at explaining concepts, uses everyday examples to make things clear, entertaining. Material is challenging- dont be fooled by the toned down slides. Use Studymate to study for tests (on blackboard). Great class though, very very interesting, never had a boring class.
Interesting lady. No morals, but that doesn't matter. Class time was often pointless, but would occaisionally hint at what was on the tests, which were hard, even with studying the book. But got a B. Class was fun, but we didn't really learn much, I found the book most helpful. She is nice and willing to help you, so hey, could be worse.
terrible terrible terrible class. worse class i have EVER TAKEN. she is a nice lady dont get me wrong but she prides herself in making her tests hard and when my class did do semi well she was not pleased with it. tests are impossible even with hours of studying, class does not relate to tests and she does not round and no extra credit. DO NOT TAKE
do yourself a favor, dont take this lady. she thinks shes "cool" by teaching kids what she knows about the F word but shes just an obnoxious old liberal who needs to get laid. oh yeah, her tests are really hard.
This class is not impossible, but if you have another option I would probably take it. Her class is painful to sit through and she makes you interact with the kids around you. The tests are hard for no reason and she knows it and almost brags about how hard they are but still insists that she wants everyone to do well. Try someone else.
Desire to understand Communication? Look up the word Semiotics. Eschew "Text Message Mentality". Prof Gretchen will give you her own eye teeth to help you comprehend this vital subject. Ask her! She writes on the blackboard for a REASON. Utilize it! Cultural Contexts are COMPLEX! Gives one an excuse to courageously UTILIZE one's Brain. Brava, Prof!
Lecture is either beyond boring or out of control. She tries entirely too hard to be "cool" but it gets pretty comical. There's online exams, but she brags about how hard she can make them.
WORST TEACHER EVER. makes up answers as she goes along-- if you ask a question she beats around the bush for an answer... prides herself on hard tests and makes tests impossible-- more on how to ask hard questions not on knowledge--- worst teacher ever worked my butt off because she made it impossible
Boring class, nothing you learn in class is on the tests. She acts really nice in person, but grades super hard and gives you rude critiques. In class participation is required. I'd suggest taking someone else if you can.
She prides her tests on being hard, and they are. I thought she was entertaining during lectures, she tried to make it fun for everyone. Yes you have to work for tests, but half of the final were her questions. She does group tests which boost your grade anyway. Really helpful with speeches. she wants you to do well not fail! I enjoyed this class.
She makes her tests impossible. Entertaining and interesting class - but you HAVE to work hard for any good grade.
The class is hard, you really have to study from the book and lectures in order to get a good grade. Hazard cares about her students, and lectures aren't bad to go to even though attendance isn't required. I'd take her again.
She was enthusiastic and relatable. She made everything interesting!
She is an extremely enthusiastic professor. She will do anything in her power to help you succeed. You can only miss two classes, but she's not boring so it's not bad! Plus, she gives awesome feedback with your speeches and helps a great deal with preparing your speeches. Take this class!
LOVE HER. She is extremely enthusiastic about her course, and she will do anything to help you understand and succeed. She relies on the textbook and so does your grade, so read it! But, it's really interesting. Her enthusiasm may come off as a bit exhausting sometimes, but you'll ALWAYS understand the lecture with her.
Gretchen has a nice attitude in class and wants kids to actually learn but her tests dont always follow with what you go over. They are much harder than what she makes them out to be and most kids get Cs. She tells you what to put in your speech and then takes off for those exact things. Very frustrating sometimes
Gretchen is very understanding and breaks down these otherwise confusing communication concepts. She tells you from the beginning of class that she grades generously, so if you get a few bad grades, don't worry! She will curve/bump them up!
Very frustrating. Tests contain things not covered in class. Absolutely no structure or organization whatsoever which made the class difficult and confusing.
She has by far been my favorite teacher at JMU. She knows her stuff and is super helpful. She made sure from the first class that we all became good acquaintances and she helps participation in class seem natural. Tests may not exactly follow class discussion, but she takes a full class before each test to answer each study guide question!LOVE HER
Gretchen is awesome! Very funny and understanding of the student life style. Will help if needed and shows a lot of interest in students. Tough grader and you have to work for it. She rarely awards A's, but was worth taking the class for all the presentation skills learned and fun we had! Really only need book for studying final.
Gretchen is FANTASTIC. The material for this class is very conceptual and application-based, and she does a wonderful job organizing it and explaining it. She knows her stuff. And she is 100% for the success of her students. Take this class and gain a new favorite teacher.
Very tough grader, she will not give you an A. On the very first day she said a C in my class is like an A in another class! She makes GCOM much harder than it should be, and is super nit picky! Do not take!!!
Gretchen is a great teacher but a VERY harsh grader. Lectures are always entertaining and she will definitely push you to be the best speaker you can be.
She purposely grades the assignment really really hard so you show improvement, so dont be scared. Tests are hard but there are only a few and theyre online. Two individual speeches and one group. She's not a fan of notes though so you have to know your stuff. Kind of annoying at times but enthusiastic and really willing to help. Meet with her!
She is a TOUGH grader. The tests are NOT easy. She is so enthusiastic about her content and also really sexual and funny at times. She is helpful when you go to her and actually cares, but she maybe spent 5 days actually lecturing about CONTENT that was on the tests. Beware. If you want a challenge but a funny class, go ahead.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this class. But one thing's for sure, the tests are near impossible! Studied for hours and I still couldn't get better than a C minus on either. However, she does give extra credit. Overall I ended up with an A minus, but you definitely have to work for it. And a piece of advice, get on her good side!
NEVER take a class with Gretchen. Her test questions are ridiculously impossible to answer, she gets frustrated when you don't understand course concepts the same way she does, and she refuses to admit that she could possibly be incorrect. Worse professor I've had at JMU, by far.
Gretchen is the best SCOM professor you could ask for. If you want to learn and improve your skills this the class for you. It may not be an easy A but it is definitely not hard to get an A as you grade yourself. She is 100% there for her students and wants you to succeed. One of my favorite professors at JMU.
first, if you take her, she says you don't need a textbook but thats a lie b/c all of her tests are straight out of the book. She is THE HARDEST GRADER when it comes to speeches; no one in my class got an A all semester. Her lectures are confusing to listen to and she goes off on so many tangents.
People either love her or hate her. I guess because she's so eccentric. As for me, I was not a fan. She is such a tough grader when it comes to speeches & it made my grade suffer. The tests are pretty hard, too. Make sure you study. She also made me feel kinda dumb whenever I'd talk to her or ask a question.
If you care about your GPA, DO NOT take this class with Professor Hazard. She is very rude, a tough grader, and the tests are based off of what she thinks is the correct answer. The tests are very application based and she doesn't explain anything well during class. You will do so much work and put in so much effort and will still get a B. BEWARE!
Take anyone except for her. Her tests are impossible. She's so rude and disrespectful. She gets mad when you don't understand something and doesn't explain things very well. The textbook isn't really helpful but she tells you to read it anyways to study for tests. Just don't take her if you care about your GPA.
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!!! She is very rude and doesn't care about you. Her tests are hard and are based on HER opinions. Lectures are boring and she gets off topic. The textbook isn't useful and she doesn't help you out. DONT TAKE HER!!!!!
The class is full of lectures, but they are entertaining. Hazard is a tough grader but prepared you well for the final. It's not an easy A, but you can get a good grade if you put a slightly above average amount of work into it. The tests are hard, but they aren't worth too much. Overall I enjoyed her, but not everyone did.
Gretchen likes to come on here and write terrible reviews about herself so she's doesn't get awful students so ignore the ones that says she's awful. She's hilarious, caring, and explains everything. She's a difficult grader when it comes to presentations but she will work with you. She prepares you well for th SCOM final in an entertaining way 3
Gretchen is so much fun. Her lectures are so interesting and enjoyable. She gives really great feedback on all assignments and really wants to help to make sure you get the best grade possible. Come to class and ask for help with your presentations and it'll be a piece of cake.
Gretchen has a great personality and is very approachable as a person, but not so great as a teacher. Her grading practices and expectations are often unclear, and her guidance is sometimes lacking. However, she does genuinely care about her students and wants them to succeed.
Gretchen is very friendly and seems to care but is disorganized and grading is very unclear. She would say that we were doing well and then give us a failing grade. Always seems to blame "the department" or the other teachers.
A very compassionate lady who makes you think insightfully and teaches you to be a better presenter. Her grading criteria is very sporadic but as long as you put a lot of effort into your work and listen to the tips she gives for each assignment in class you should be fine. She's very "hip" for her age which made for an enjoyably relaxing class.
Gretchen has been the best professor I've had at JMU so far. She always had a fun and positive attitude in class which made SCOM so much more. While her class is tough at times, she always gives you a solid foundation to be successful in the course and beyond. Would recommend if you want a positive SCOM experience.
Gretchen is one of the best professors I've had at JMU. She wants to connect with her students and definitely cares about their success. She is a tough grader, but the feedback she gives makes it easy to improve. I highly recommend taking her class to make the most out of your scam experience.
Gretchen clearly cares about what she's teaching and has a love for the subject. That said, she's a tough grader and not the best at explaining things. Assignments given are often super confusing which is really problematic.
Never read textbook all semester, just fill out the study guide on canvas and you'll be fine. The group projects took quite a bit of work but not A LOT. Gretchen is such a fun teacher too, she's spunky and fun. She can be intimidating at times but you learn to get over it. By the end of the class you will more than likely detest most of your group
Her lectures don't match up with the tests and she's not clear on what she wants from the projects. If you ask her questions, shell just confuse you more. However, the test are straight from the textbook so READ IT. She's a nice person but could be more clear on her expectations.
Gretchen knows the content she is teaching, and is good at speaking. However, she is an incredibly difficult grader, and will not give As. No matter how well you do, she says you can do better and won't give you a perfect score. She failed to go over content that we were tested on thoroughly, making exams harder than necessary. Read the book.
Literally the worst grader. If you come to class it doesnt matter. Tests dont match up with the material. Worst gen ed ever. Dont be fooled by the smile, its a trap.
Incredibly rude and degrading towards you if you have a question, will start giving you 0s if you speak up to something she is doing wrong or unfair, takes off points on assignments for requirements she never asked for, has no sympathy for excused absences. Feedback is not constructive and instead mean.
Avoid Gretchen at all costs. Literally any other scom teacher is better than her. To sum her up in one word, she is crazy. Her grading is ridiculous, and she does not give As. Her directions are often way overcomplicated, making things even more confusing. Tests don't match the information she discusses, and the book does't help either. Stay away.
Gretchen makes you work, but it is respected and necessary. She wants us to do well in this class and at JMU as a whole. Great professor. Sometimes can be brutal, but it is just to make us better communicators. Easy B.
Prof Hazard is such a sweet heart during lectures but don't let that fool you, she grades pretty ruthlessly so unless you're putting in a good amount of effort (to a GENERAL education course) this will not be an easy A. Prepare accordingly.
Take this class from her and you will regret it! Tough, all over the place, selective on some kind of agenda and a poor representative of what JMU is.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS!!!!! i highly recommend not taking her! She is so RUDE! if you asks questions she will make you feel completely stupid and grades ridiculously hard for a gen ed! I have never felt so downgraded in my life! She is so tough and gives rude feedback instead of helpful. whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE SCOM WITH HAZARD!!!!!
professor Hazard is definitely not the easiest SCOM teacher but she definitely knows what shes doing. grades hard but wants to see her students achieve and if you treat her with respect in class shell be more than happy to give you help when needed. probably not the easiest class for this gen ed but definitely improved my pub speaking skills
Prof Hazard definitely isn't the worst teacher for an SCOM gen ed. She can be sassy and grades speeches pretty harshly, but overall she's not bad.
Hazard isn't the best, but she's not the worst either. She grades presentations pretty harshly, but she just wants you to succeed and improve your public speaking skills. Going on the first day of presentations is definitely key since she doesn't grade you as harshly as people that go on later days. Theres a couple of tests, but they're not too bad
She expects a lot from her students. Her tests are incredibly hard which affects your overall grade a lot. Presentations were also graded harshly. She told us to not expect an A in her class and she was right. You'll be able to mange the class but maybe another teacher might be better.
Don't take this class with her. JUST DONT DO IT!! "Hazard" is what you will think when you think of your GPA. Grading is tough for no reason and she eats introverts for lunch. Pick any other instructor or you will regret it. This is the only C I have ever had in my life. It's SCOM, why?
She is an okay professor. She will always answer your questions however her teaching style is slightly quick and only helps on the tests a bit as her tests are hard.
An amazing professor! She'a a tough grader, but you learn a lot in her class. My public speaking skills increased dramatically throughout the semester and I attribute a lot of my progress to the structure of her class and her feedback. Also, would def recommend taking 121 cuz you have 2 individual speeches and 1 group, so best of both worlds.
Gretchen has such a bubbly personality and is such a fun lady that she made scom enjoyable. Class was super easy and if you just show up, you'll have a B. Only grades are 3 tests (study bc they're hard) and 3 speeches. Tough grader though. Most classes she talked about how to present speeches, never any homework - honestly super easy class.
If you are looking to see if you should take this class with this Professor then I would say no. Look somewhere else. I wish I did. Tough grader and not easy to work with.
I had the worse experience ever in this class. I don't know who left the review about the teacher leaving her own comments but I am an actual student that will never ever be the same after being in this class. I am transferring out of JMU because of my experience from Ms. Hazard. This class is tough for no reason and she does not care to help.
Set up an appointment with her three separate times and she skipped them all. She liked the claim she posts bad grades for herself on here but really shes just insecure about how much students hate her. She was fine in class but as soon as I finally got her to come to office hours she told me my disability meant I shouldnt be in school.
Professor Hazard was a great professor. She really cares about her students' success and makes herself available to you if you need help. She is a tough grader and you have to work for your grades but it's easy to get an A if you put in the effort.
I had Hazard as an advisor and she made my first year experience the worse. I asked for help and instead she assumed I was an athlete because of my skin color. I graduated High School honor roll with 23 college credits. She assumed I missed class for sports when I was NOT on a team then embarrassingly emailed a JMU Athletic Director to complain.
There are no quizzes and only like 2 tests but you do have to do speeches. She's a little condescending and passive aggressive with her feedback so don't take it too personal.
Shes nice, but shes certainly not a good professor. She grades harshly so its hard get decent grades. Her feedback on your speeches can be rude and condescending, making you feel really dumb. Her exams are tough, so you really gotta study. If you really wanna pass this class, youre gonna have to try really hard. Take someone else if you can.
Hazard is particular, grades slowly & harshly. I dreaded her lectures because she forces participation & puts students on the spot. She's passive aggressive when giving feedback & tends to be insulting. I could tell she was struggling to control her temper. So if you're sensitive, avoid her. The material isn't awful , 3 exams & 3 speeches.
She grades way too harshly for a gen-ed course. She wants us to do well in this class, but she expects so much from you if you want to pass with an A. Shes nice during lectures but also passive-aggressive when shes grading your speeches. When you read her comments, you can tell shes being so passive-aggressive. I dont recommend.
Copious amount of work for a Gen ed class, moreover, she is fake, does not know how to teach or create a study guide, I am surprised she got her teaching license, do not know how she schemed her way into a professor position, gives terrible tests with trick questions and is an extremely tough grader.
For me, the class was not hard in general, speeches were easy and only 3 speeches for the whole semester, never got lower than a B. But the tests were super confusing and worded so weird, did not line up with class lectures as much as it should. But she is a very nice lady and you actually learn useful stuff in that class. She is very helpful.
Her tests are ridiculous. She puts in so many tricky questions and some questions don't even match up with her lectures. Speeches are okay but she can be ruthless while grading them. If you're a more sensitive person, I'd avoid taking her class because her comments can be very critical and rude. If you're an introvert, you won't survive either.
Professor Hazard is nice during class time, however she doesn't always answer her emails. She also grades way too hard for a gen ed requirement. She doesn't offer feedback from the grades she gives either. Her tests are almost impossible to do well on. Her lectures also don't help much with the tests. Lots of busy work and assignments.
Gretchen is nice during lectures, but she can be rude if you don't understand things and when she gives you feedback on assignments. Tbh, this class gave me a lot of anxiety and I have had times before and after class where I would just be so stressed out and cry. She expects perfect-quality speeches for an A and her exams were so confusing. Avoid.
Grades really tough, says most people get a C in her class and that its unlikely you'd get an A. This is supposed to be a gen-ed, too, so obviously not everyone will be amazing in this class. Really wish the grading wasn't so harsh. Her lectures dont really match up with her exams and some questions are just way too tricky. Can be condescending.
Had Gretchen for SCOM121. Tbh, she teaches the class like we're all SCOM majors, but isn't this a gen-ed? She grades your speeches very harshly. If you want an A on any speech, you really have to do everything to a T. Most people in my class got like Bs or Cs on our speeches. The people who got As were either SCOM majors or were that good at it.
ridiculously hard grader. Tests are even harder... STAY AWAY from hazard not worth your grade dropping unless you put endless effort in everything you do. not worth the time and effort, like I'm taking this for a GENed but she doesn't treat it like that.
I had to drop her class because I couldnt stand her. Her method of teaching just didnt work for me, personally, and her attitude in class always rubbed me the wrong way. So glad I made the decision to drop after reading everyone elses reviews. I really dont think I wouldve survived her class... Stay away from Hazard!!!
I remember how some people in my class literally confronted Gretchen about some tricky questions she put on her tests and how the questions had stuff that were NEVER talked about during her lectures. She claimed that they were discussed, but everyone else also agreed that they were NEVER discussed. She's a nice lady, but not the best SCOM prof.
Prof. Hazard is very blunt and doesn't explain her grading. She gives a bunch of assignments and exams. Her tests make no sense. If you think you know it, think again. Her study guide doesn't reflect her exams. I would avoid this class, especially at 8am.
She is so rude and condescending! And is this NOT a GEN-ED?? Did I suddenly become an SCOM major? Because she grades everything too harshly. Like, were not all experts at public speaking and not all of us are interested in SCOM, so at least just cool down with the grading. And those reviews below about her ableism and racism are concerning, yikes.
Yes her last name is a warning. HAZARD!! Do not take this class. She grades very harshly, and has no concern for her students well being. Unreasonably high expectations, super tough grader, unclear syllabus, and rude to students. If you need this class for a gen ed make sure you get it with a different teacher. This is not where you want to be.
INCREDIBLY passive-aggressive. She can be really rude for no reason at all, and she comes of hostile. She is really nice sometimes and really mean other times. Don't bother trying to get extensions or extra credit, its not going to happen. I had multiple friends straight up drop this class when she was rude literally the first day. AVOID HER!
She was my least favorite professor here. Always had an attitude with me and others. Never seemed to care about our well-being. Her grading method makes no sense and it's so harsh. I should have dropped her class while I still had the chance. If I had done that, then maybe I would've had a better prof and better grade. She is literally a hazard.
I had Hazard for 121 and tbh she was a very nice lady and showed genuine interest in her students. The only problem which was a very big one is that her tests are basically a shot in the dark. None of what we go over in class is on the test. The tests are not at all indicative of lectures and class.
She would be so rude to people during lectures. At times, yes, she was nice. Then you look at the speech feedback she gives and it has a very passive-aggressive tone, especially if you didn't do exactly how she wants. A lot of us are beginners with this stuff and don't know how to give amazing speeches. Why expect stuff seniors should be able to do
She's weird. She likes to base her lectures on things that will not relate to the projects she gives you. She also has the most unusual examples during lectures and many people either doze off or fall asleep. She is also a weird personality. She calls people out and talks about subjects unrelated to the class. Toe rings. She grades tough, busy work
I LOVE! she is so funny and amazing. she really respects your opinion and if you participate in class she will love you.
She is a great professor, from my experience she encourages all of her students to be comfortable with one another and want each other to succeed. She gives good constructive criticism and you do have to work for a good grade. The tests are difficult but she makes herself available if you need help. Very funny and sets a good tone for her class.
Gretchen is a straight to the point professor, but along with that she's respectful. She allows you as an adult learner to bring your best foot forward on a number of assignments. I loved that she had us do a solo speech, because it took me out of my comfort zone and I was quite pleased with my progression in doing that and the results of my grade.
Prof. Hazard is a very interesting teacher. She made class welcoming and enjoyable. There were times she would get really political about things, but you just have to ignore it. Tests were hard for me because it is all about applying the information you learn.
Gretchen is a great professor for SCOM. I personally dont think she really prepared me for the tests, but for the final exam 100%. I got a 89 on it! You can tell she loves what she does because she brings so much energy and enthusiasm to the class. Take advantage of her help, she really wants her students to succeed!
She was really rude in class, tests were way too difficult. I remember she reviewed exams with us and told us the averages of how many people got each question right, literally so many of the questions we reviewed had like 30% people get them right. Some things in lecture don't match up with exams either. I'd go for someone else if possible.
It was a speech class that was given online, but she did well to keep people participating and not zoning out. You had an individual speech and then a group speech; I definitely like the group speech more. Everybody is expected to speak on a topic during every-other class so make sure you know the material or get to class early.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She is literally the sweetest lady and cares so much about her students. I have felt so prepared for every assignment she's given. She does require participation but it's mostly on your own terms and that determines your grade, volunteer your thoughts and you'll be just fine. She keeps long lectures engaging.
