ahhhhhhhh!
Very helpful, pleasant demeanor
To many e-mails... just settle down
Bad news, avoid her like the plague.
says uh huh to much. likes to make fun of kids
enjoys(you can see it!) making fun of people and hurting their feelings.
While fairly flexible, she tends to make you feel inferior if you have questions about something. Would recommend people stay away from her.
Terrible teacher. Piles on tons of superficial material she barely understands herself. Would try to avoid!!!
Very nice, work is relevant. Fun class!! Enjoyed it very much!!
I believe she was an excellent prof and i would have her again if i could!
can't teach
Very vague on homework directions, and then takes points off for things she didnt tell you to do. Not nice to students, no thought at all. Avoid at all costs
Does a great job teaching the class and answering questions. Lots and lots of superficial material and grades hard though. Overall not too bad of an experience.
Didnt like our "group" lol and didnt seem to want to help us. Usual annoying engineering homework. Taught some stuff pretty well.
Probably an ok teacher, but stuck teaching the "Babysit Freshmen" course. I think the coursework is the problem, not the professor. She could stand to improve upon said coursework, though.
I've had better and worse.

She is terrible and she is a bad teacher. My team got penalized for exceeding the speech time by ONE second. She is not helpful and she has a bad attitude.
Man-hating Wench
She is one of the reasons I changed majors. ENG 1101 just sucks as it is, and you just have to behave and Gretchen will like ya. She's really not that bad.

Superiority complex. Feels threatened by students, and takes more joy in confusing them than teaching. Assigns grades on her opinion of you, NOT based off from test and homework scores.
Had major project due EASTER SUNDAY 6 PM. Heartless, cruel, gender-biased troll. Learned nothing in class but sure did waste a lot of time. The course and the professor need to go.

The most **** prof I have ever seen. Smirks everytime she goes over complicated processes. Loves to make people feel stupid and overload students with worthless projects. SWITCH TO ANOTHER PROF!!
she is a bad teacher regardless
Evil life sucking ****, who is determined to make your life a living hell. Stay clear from her broom she may get you with it. If you are looking for a camp counselor to **** your children take Gretchen Hein.
Quite poor and unapproachable. Cares little in terms of assisting students. Incredibly heavy workload assigned each day.
Her class is not the difficult, She really cares about her students if you take the time to talk to her. She is approachable, but just won't take crap from students. I think that she is an excellent teacher and she has a difficult class to try to teach--it would suck to teach.
She doesn't seem that bright. I don't think she even knows what she is talking about. Gives unreasonable amounts of homework, which is really busywork. She thinks that being a professor makes her awsome, but she really is quite unpleasant.
Her lack of skill in the area of writing (or ANY area for that matter), could never keep her from superinflating her ego by completely ravaging each and every one of her students' assignments, as she takes pleasure in flaunting her suppposed superiority.
Plays "favorites," Possesses an uncanny ability to make one want to shrivel up into a ball and cower in the corner of the room when voicing an inquiry, then offers a reply which makes one feel incredibly imbecilic. Excessive superiority complex.
does not know material very well. she gives no review for exams, so students generally do poor on tests and lab practicals.
If she hates you or your group, you'll be miserable for the entire semester. She'll put extra effort into failing students that she doesn't like. I think I'm going to have to take this stupid class again next year because of her!
Moodiest woman ever. She can go from helpful at the start of class to insano PMS queen at the end of class. She makes a huge effort to let everyone know that she has 3 degrees, worked for GM, and a real quote"Call me Dr.Hein, I spent many years working towards it so you can call me Dr." No one cares!
What in the world is she doing teaching Thermo-Fluids?!?! ... if you can look passed the spelling errors and misprinted equations on the overheads then she still is a terrible instructor.
Probley not the best instructor to teach thermo-fluids,although she has work experience in the feild. She made a ton of typo's on her slides, but she fixes them as she teaches. So she should be pretty clear the next time she teaches. Over all she is there to help you succeed.
This professor takes no effort what so ever to help her students with the class. From what my classmates and I have observed and experienced she actually wants her students to fail.
Very Moody, she can go to psycho b*tch in under 3 seconds. Other than that, the class is ok if she likes your team. She does insist you call her Dr. and will not like you if you forget the title.
Ok, this woman has know Idea what the hell she is doing as far as, teaching goes. She is moody, stubborn, and a "Doctor". I just want to find the person who handed her the PhD and punch them in the face!
She's crazy in her classes, avoid her at all costs. However, if you meet with her after class one on one, she is very helpful and respectful, a far cry from her classes. Don't get on her bad side, and your team will do just fine. The homework can take up to 6 hours for 1 assignment.
As everyone else has said she is very moody. Home work is long, repetative, stupid, but easy. Class usually gets out early. NEVER call her "MRS" it is "DR Hein" or just "Gretchin". Nice person though overall.
Doesnt care about the class. Will make you feel stupid for asking a question. We didnt get to grade her (as required at the end of term in all other classes) which is really disappointing cause I wanted to let her boss see how horrible a teacher she is.
Grades like a mad woman, especially on thoes precious memos. Graded us on stuff she never mentioned. Also, gave to little explination of physics problems. even though they are a major part of the class
Does a decent job relaying material, but is very rude and not helpful to students. She has a poor attitude towards her students and can be abrupt and belittling. She did prepare us well for exams, but homework assignments were capable of taking many more hours than it's worth.
She does seem to have a bit of a inferiority complex going on with her needing to be referred to as Dr and NOT Mrs. It's best not to get on the wrong side of her. She didn't seem to have the best grasp on the material. I wouldn't recommend her if you have an alternative. If you have to take her, just play it cool and do the work.
buy the class notes, they are very helpful. when doing homework work ahead and check the answers in the notebook. tests are not impossible, but make sure to study well. she is not bad, trust me it could be MUCH worse. the international edition of the book is a great deal
Strange- she seems to want her students to do well, but she is not a big fan of answering questions on the spot. A fair grader, but a pretty boring lecturer. The homework has to be done in a very specific manner, which makes the whole process very tedious, and assignments often take 5 or 6 hours to complete - find someone with a solutions manual!
I heard some horror stories going into the class, but i really dont mind her as a teacher. Its the subject that is difficult, Thermodynamics is rough you will not like it unless your a supergeek. Fluids so far isn't bad but her as a teacher your probably wont mind her. She wont be your favorite, but you wont hate her.

Not very fun.
The Gretchenator is one of the worse profs at Tech. Has no idea what she is talking about even with "numerous years in industry" Avoid if you can
She is horrible
She is very unhelpful and dont even bother going to her office hours she will not be nice (especially when you are of the male gender) and she will let you go with more questions than when you went into her office.
She has stupid fill in the blank power points. No one actually learns anything in class because we are too busy trying to find the answers to her blanks instead of learning about the information.
Avoid if possible. Silly woman with very vague and useless lectures. Joke class.
Really unclear on directions and when answering questions. Has mood swings constantly. Overall avoid her if possible.
Alright, many didn't like her but I had no problem. Can be a hard a$$ if you are late or are disrespectful. likes students to be on time. I thing its good preparation for a variety of good/bad teachers in the future.
if she doesnt like you, she will make sure that you get lower grades. says never use Wikipedia for reference, but most of the info in her presentations are picked from there. Not clear about the assignment but will take out points for things she never mentioned about. AVOID AT ANY COST.
Has no idea what she is talking about. Horrible. Take Brett Hamlin for Thermo/Fluids
Is rarely (if ever) clear about assignment directions, or when answering questions. Hypocritical when it comes to standards or expectations. Generally talks AT you instead of talking TO you. Avoid her if at all possible!
completely and totally incompetent. "those that can do, do. those that can't do, teach." the only thing is, hein can't even teach!
Uses fill-in-the-blank powerpoint slides with many spelling errors copied from the text book. You spend the boring lectures filling in notes rather than learning. Reading the textbook is more helpful. She is unable to answer questions/ problems without notes directly in front of her. Class average was failing and DOES NOT CURVE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Hated her "snickering." Especially when she said something will probably be hard for us. Really wasn't too hard, she just can't teacher for nothing.
Awful professor. Did not teach well at all. Did fill in the blank PowerPoint so lecture was a continuous kindergarten game of fill in the blank. Very vindictive to the class when she found out that a few students had cheated on an exam.
Terrible Teacher. you WILL have homework every day and will usually have many overlapping assignments. I hated her upside down smiles. Avoid if at all possible.
Great intro to college, thanks for nothing. If you want to know what a boss shouldn't be like, take this class. Bad bosses make worse profs. Really Josh? I wouldn't have guessed...
If you had attended her class and are alive (survived), know deep inside that your a better person. She is a one of. She is the worst possible first year professor there is. Because of the work load that i received and the lack of in-class instuctions about it it took me hours sometime even a whole day to do he work. I didn't do well in her or othe
Says office hours are there to ask help. If you go there and ask for some if you have doubts she doesn't explain, but makes matters worse by giving more work. Doesn't even offer oppotunities to improve student's grade, says there are extra credit to be had, but doesn't give it when it come to the final (when it matters most).
Class was not very helpful because the powerpoints took your attention away from learning to fill in the stupid blanks. Exams were fair, but long so go fast and answer everything. She is a sort of nice person, but kinda fails at teaching a large class.
She is unique to be said nicely, and if you have her take about 15 credits, anymore may cause you to have no life.
Homework was easy. Exams given three times and none are too difficult. Gives bonus points on exams by doing in class quizzes, which are pretty easy to get the full 3 points. I liked the way she related everything into the engineering field.
I found some content within powerpoints to be useless. Although her examples are extremely helpful. Uses Canvas well! Gives quizzes to be used as extra points on exams. Very nice!
I would not take this course again. I would not recommend this course to anyone. I will not be taking any courses from this professor again. I was designing and building aeroplanes before college, and my grades from this "professor" are insulting to my abilities as an engineer and how I conduct myself.
Great Teacher for First Year Engineers!
Awful professor. Does not explain what individual variables mean and fills lectures with stories about her kids and work experience. She doesn't go over exams in class once they are graded, and if you go in to her office to ask questions about an exam she will likely make you more confused.Very low class average on exams. AVOID THIS PROF.
Absolutely awful. A lack of specificity on her assignments and when she takes points off of things she doesn't say why she took them off. It's a gen ed, no one cares. I hated her and I'm lucky CpE's don't have to take 1102 because she ruined this course for me. I contemplated dropping Engineering because of her avoid at all costs.
Although a decent human being outside of class, Dr. Hein is not a professor you should be excited about having. She is extremely unclear in lecture, will generally skip over imperative information that WILL be on the tests, and takes off points on assignments for items she did not explain whatsoever. If you can, avoid taking her class.
Class was a PowerPoint lecture and was definitely "death by PowerPoint." she is pretty cool to say the least, just could be better at teaching
Very unclear on what she wants done for assignments. Exams are fairly easy if you study. Lectures are all powerpoint, and she flies through it without explaining things. Definitely stay away if at all possible.
As long as you go to class and participate intellectually you will do fine. Dr. Hein is not a bad professor and I disagree with the other comments in that regard. She is also very approachable and can answer any question asked while providing an example for remembering how to apply problem solving to achieve said answer.
Terrible professor. Lectures were all powerpoint which was somewhat helpful except for the fact she flew through them. Did not specify exactly what she wanted on assignments and marked off when certain requirements she did not ask for were not met. Don't take her if you can help it.
She does a lot of example problems, and while it may be somewhat difficult to ask questions during the lecture, she is very helpful if you go speak to her one on one. She's very enthusiastic about the subject, which makes the class actually enjoyable to go to.
One of the best professor's I have ever had. The material is challenging and the course moves very quickly. You have to work hard to pass, but she is helpful. Lectures, homework, and tutoring are key to pass. Exams are just like in class and assessment problems. Highly recommend this professor!
Dr. Hein was a great teacher to have as a Freshman. Her class challenges you but is nothing too extreme. She is always willing to help a student succeed and encourages students to ask questions and to stay in contact with her. If you utilize the opportunities for help, actually do the work, and study you will be happy with your grade.
Read the assignments. Then read them again. Then do the work, and you'll pass just fine.
Engaged with her students, always willing to help if we seeked her out.
If you ask for help, she's more than willing. If you're the average person in her large lecture, good luck following along. She seems angry often, too. She also gave extra assignments.
Not a harsh grader, but reasonable, brings up real examples, a lot of work experience incorporated in class, and overall friendly/understanding instructor.
Dr. Hein is a good thermodynamics teacher, if you do the homework the exams are easy. She wasn't a good ENG 1101 teacher avoid if possible.
Dr. Hein organized her class and lectured in a haphazard and uninspired manner, often pulling examples at random and speaking with stilted, awkward cadence. Homework for this class was 95% busy work designed to distract from other, more important courses. Would prefer to find another professor if retaking.
I had Dr. Hein for ENG 1101 and although she lectured a lot it was an alright class. What a lot of people forget is that ENG1101 is structured to be a lecture /work based class with a lot of homework and group work. It's not necessarily the professors fault. Additionally, she is one of the better Eng1101 professors because she keeps up with canvas
Dr. Hein is a very blunt professor, which is helpful. Although, even though 1101 is known to be an easier class, you actually have to put in work and study time to do well in the class. EXPECT A LOT OF BUSY WORK!
Dr. Hein loves to teach Thermo and it shows in her teaching. She always makes sure to relate the subject to every major and tells interesting stories to do so. Unfortunately, her lectures often feel rushed and her exams can be confusing and not representative of the difficulty seen in the homework and class examples. You never need the textbook.
Very passionate about the topic. Tests are HARD but she will curve, especially on the 3rd exam (class average is usually like 60% on that one). LOTS of extra credit (like 12% on each exam) if you do the optional online quizzes, and the tests are basically the homework.
She is a really good teacher and I highly recommend her. Thermo is very hard but she teaches it well. If you ever have any issues go talk to her she will help. Make sure that you do the homework or passing her already hard tests will be nearly impossible, she does curve them though. All things considered, She is a great professor.
Was very helpful when you needed it.
Extremely good lecturer but her grading of exams is ridiculous. Exams are difficult and dissimilar to examples done in the book or in class. Also, she gives time consuming homework. You will learn and understand Thermodynamics, but it is extremely hard to get a good grade even if you understand the material.
terrible professor, doesn't give any help for exams, no partial credit. The average on the second exam was around a 40% and she doesn't even care. She hates when people ask questions during class and rolls her eyes at students. Doesn't give previous year's exams, even though she makes new ones every semester. She gives no effort into teaching.
The class wouldn't be bad at all if the grading and questions on the exams were anything like the homework. The exams are far more difficult, and her grading is extremely inconsistent. Good luck getting a response if you email her as well, she almost never replies. I would do everything possible to avoid having this professor ever again.
Didn't have her for 1101. She enjoys teaching the class and understands the material well. She even brings her duck to class. Exams are pretty tough, but DO THE ASSESSMENTS. You can get up to 9 points extra credit. No book, but print off slides and TAKE NOTES. For my exams, she was good about giving points back.
Pretty solid professor. She records and posts her lectures, so attendance is not mandatory, but definitely keep up. Lots of material is covered and you'll need to be able to navigate a pretty hefty exam packet of equations and tables. Don't fall behind and be sure to do very well on the homework and you'll be fine.
She can be rude, her teaching style is unclear, she uses modules that are hard to grade, shes very set in her ways and unsympathetic to situations. If the class wasnt required I would not take it, do your best to get the other instructor for this course.
Her class and lectures were unorganized and she often pulled examples at random. Her modules were unclear, her teaching was unclear, and she responded to criticism in a passive aggressive way. I highly recommend trying to get the other instructor if possible.
Avoid at all costs. The exams are nothing like the homework, I'd recommend teaming up and preparing 5 days prior to an exam. She does curve exams though which is nice, but its only when the average is below a 70 or so. Be careful with how you word things to her, she gets easily offended and will hold it against you. Very passive aggressive.
Really knows what she's talking about and is clearly passionate about the subject. Always available to help with homework or concepts and makes sure you're learning the content and not just memorizing a process. Exams are variations on homework problems which is why its so important to practice. I really feel like an engineer after this class
Professor Hein goes through example after example in class. If you skip you will not know how to solve it in her deriving fashion, which is what is required on the exam. If you ask for help outside of class, she will drop everything for you as long as you are respectful. You absolutely must keep up on lectures or you will be left in the dust.
Gretchen is awesome and one of the better professors at Tech. I had her for the Civil version of Thermodynamics. She stops to make sure everyone knows what's going on and holds the students accountable. Just go to class and pay attention, if you put in effort she will recognize it. But it's not a class you can blow off and manage to pull an A in.
Gretchen seems to be very passionate about thermodynamics and civil/environmental engineering in general. Print-out notes are provided and the textbook really isn't necessary. Her lectures are good, she will answer questions during and after class. She wants her students to succeed but will not make class easier in doing so. High quality professor.
Dr. Hein truly cares about her students individually. Everyone is set up to pass her class. If you go to class, honestly attempt the homework, do the practice exams you will walk out with atleast a B. She is a very generous grader. Dr. Hein looks to make sure you under the process of what you are doing, not necessarily if you got the right answer.
Gretchen is an awesome teacher. She gives great lectures with example problems and even brings a duck to class! Her class can be difficult, so if you are struggling I recommend going to her office hours. She is very willing to help and push you to do better. The textbook is expensive and I did well in the class without using it, so don't bother.
She's a decent prof but seemed very indifferent and not caring about students. Exams are weighted 80% a little tricky but she scaled/curves them quite alot. Textbook isn't necessary, the in-class notes are good enough to prepare for exams.
She won't answer your questions or just runs you around in circles. Regularly laughs when students get frustrated. Can be nice, but if you don't do something her way you're wrong.
She's the ideal professor in my eyes. She constantly challenges students to make sure they understand what they're learning. She starts lectures with a real-life example related to the topic, then dives into the lecture, asking you questions about key concepts throughout, and then works through example problems to apply what you've learned. Awesome
Great prof and I highly recommend her. Thermo is hard but she teaches it well. If you have any issues, she or a TA will gladly help. Do the homework or passing her already hard tests will be nearly impossible, but the homework isn't that bad and the amount is good.
I thought Dr. Hein was a great instructor. She was engaging during class and made sure that everyone knew what was going on--typically by prompting the class to answer questions during the problem solving. Tests are similar enough to the HW that you don't feel lost, but it's still challenging. Great class!
After reading previous reviews on her and the course, I was scared to take it. It turned out to be one of the better class experiences I had. Lectures, quizzes, and exams are all straightforward and relevant, and she is a great, enthusiastic teacher. Simplifies concepts and makes tough concepts easy to digest
Awesome teacher, but gives the hardest homework I've had in a class yet. It's a serious time commitment to do well in this class. I'd recommend forming a study group for the homework and to study before quizzes because they're such a large portion of your grade. She really does cares about each student individually and will help if you reach out.
Great professor and lecturer. This is a difficult class, but she teaches it in a very understandable way. Make sure to understand the examples in class and ask if you have questions as they are very helpful for the homework and quizzes.
This is a relatively hard course, however Professor Hein makes it much easier, and interesting than it should be. the homework takes while, but its only given once a week, or sometimes even once every two weeks. She is clear about what she expects in your work, and gives you access to a formula sheet for quizzes/ exams. She also loves ducks.
