kind of awkward, nice but expects a lot, reading loads are enormous. quizzes and journals due weekly, not a very hard grader, lots of in class discussions with the prof hanging over your shoulder analyzing what you're saying, intimidating
AHHHH! Irritated the Hell out of me. I had to leave class early to prevent screaming. She changed her syllabus 7 times and still nothing was on time and tasks were SO unclear - nobody in our class knew what she was talking about. Someone tell this woman smiling doesn't make a better prof. and that black and brown DON't match and we're not in HS!
Fun teacher, Reading and quizzes do every day. Lots of in-class discussions, overall a fun teacher.
This class was completely pointless, and definitely wasn't what I had expected. The prof. is helpful, but totally unclear on assignments. She doesn't know what she is doing half the time, and makes us do class activites that do not pertain to what we are learning about. I wouldn't recommend taking a class from her unless you like being confused.
Got a good grade, but good lord she is terrible. I wanted to shoot my foot everyday. Participation is necessary so it's almost the worst class ever having to sit there and watch her fumble around and smile. She treated me like I was in high school. I'm surprised a seating chart wasn't involved. I gave her a horrible eval for being so unorganized.
The below review joked about how they wouldn't be surprised if a seating chart was used...SHE GAVE US A SEATING CHART! No kidding. Do NOT take this proff. Expect to read 70-100 pages twice a week, write weekly one page essays and take daily quizes. Teacher is very unclear, class is boring, group work is pointless. This class was a joke!
We had a seating chart for one week (2 classes) after she got fed up with 2 or 3 people that were constantly disrupting the class. I don't blame her for it. Class is easy if you keep up with readings, big chunks to read but exams and quizzes are easy if you keep up. Nice professor - wants you to learn.
I don't know where she learned to teach but whatever school it was should be shut down. I don't think she even knows what she wants to talk about in the book half of the time and then other half makes no sense to what we are talking about. When she can't answer a question she just smiles at you! Just to clear that up- it doesn't answer the question
Great professor, maybe doesn't know what she wants to talk about but that's because she wants there to be an open class discussion instead of leading people by the hand through the entire class. Sorry if that's what you want, but this is college, not high school. Very intelligent, very helpful, if you read the assignments, you'll have no problem.
This class was a huge waste of time. You have to build a website but she doesn't have a clue how to help whenever people ask her questions! She makes you literally read an MLA handbook as an assignment, which sums up the entire class: BUSY WORK. She has no idea what to have us do, so makes us do random crap to fill our time! Don't take this class.
She has some very awkward moments in class when we challenged her with questions. The three books she picked were very easy reads and she gave random quizes so just buck up and do the reading. She helps you whenever you ask and she is an easy grader on papers as long as she knows you put effort into it (ie: bring your paper to her before its due)
The class has a lot of busy work, you have to create a website which if you don't know anything about computers is hard to do. She is really nice though and willing and excited to help anyways she can. She grades really easy too. Expect to get a good grade if you take this class.
She is an awesome teacher. She is very helpful when you need help with papers. She likes to get you involved in discussions about the books so just read them and you will do fine. When you turn in your rough draft for papers she will sometimes right corrections for you so you get a better grade on the paper. Awesome professor! Highly recommend her!
Don't listen to any negative comments sait about Michlitsch. I had her for Black Women Writers. It was an interesting class and she taught it really well. There was some "busy work" and as a slacker, I thought I'd hate it, but I ended up learning a lot from it! She's a bit too passive but really nice. Do your work & participate & you'll be ok!
WOW... I dont know who taught her how to teach but she needs to learn again. The class is pretty easy overall, but damn you dont learn anything that you think your going to learn. I had her for two class and I didn't really care for either one of them. I think she means well but in the end she just doesn't know how to teach.
Loves to humiliate students who don't agree with her interpretation of the texts, loves to assign busy work and WILL treat you as though you're in high school. We had vocabulary sheets in ENG290. Ridiculous.
I thought Prof Michlitsch was a good professor for 290. She expected good evidence to support any claim, but thats what you are supposed to be learning in literature classes. Good grader. 3 papers, 3 essay tests. The "busy" work is for extra grades, if you do them its easier to get an A. Quizzes everyother class. Made 290 easier than expected.
I love Dr. M! She's one of the best profs I've had at WSU. Very friendly, upbeat, willing to help you. Yes, her class is hard, but if you don't want to work, you shouldn't be in college. I highly recommend her. Helps you any way she can, even writing letters of reference. And she's nice to look at too!
I took Professor M. for two classes and I thought both of them were a waste of time. She means well, but she just doesn't know how to teach. Her classes are easy though. If your just looking for an easy grade, take her, if you want to learn DON'T!
If she wants you to make a website in the class -- run away! She does not know how to use Dreamweaver, and does not listen when you try to help her out. She just babbled about Winona and gave us random tests that had nothing to do with anything.
This class can get VERY long. Not too hard. Attendance was required everyday since we had a quiz everyday...but probably was actually a good thing since it forced me to go to class :) A little boring, but overall a pretty easy class.
Dr. M is a very good teacher and knows what she is talking about. She gives test everyday on the three books we read. She does put you on the spot sometimes with questions but does help with them. Overal pretty good professor.
She was a great prof. She gave a lot of work, but she is an easy grader and as long as you do your work and attend a few extra credit lectures you'll get an A.
She's not very clear with many of the things she says. She's a nice person but she's a hard grader. Make sure you come to class prepared every period.
I thought she was enjoyable, just make sure you read and do your work. Sometimes, during class discussion, she can make you feel intimidated, but I think she means well. She's nice and gives you the grade you deserve.
Remember that saying "There is never a stupid question?" Yea, well, she doesn't agree with that. Expect to be graded extremely tough on papers, and also expect the reading load to be heavy. Very little discussion on books, and more often than not she will discredit your two cents faster than you can finish your sentence. Have fun.
LOVE HER!!! She grades fairly, and she lets you know how to do better next time. Her study guide for the midterm was great too. If you followed her tips on the guide, the midterm was easy. I was disappointed when she went on maternity leave- our fill in was a horrible prof from SETC. She will go the extra mile for her students :)
This professor makes you feel stupid, she will question your opinion. She left half way through the semester and her replacement was horrible. Sure he was easy, but we did the same thing every day, quiz, review quiz, get into groups. Professor Michlitsch makes you feel dumb at times.
Im speechless. I'm a transfer student and i had to take this class as a filler to finish my english credits. This class is (head shake, eye roll). Its 1 credit, and she expects us to read a 500 page book about corn, grass, and the forest. And wright a paper, that i understand. Other then that (head shake, eye roll).
This class was horrible. She gives so much homework and talksabout vague topics for 2 hours every day.You have notes due from a book once a week, while your reading 1 of 3 books with random quizzes, and writing one of her three papers all of which you do on your own time. You get nothing done during class.Going is pointless except she takes attendance
if you are interested in the topic of english, do not take her. if you want an easy A or B like me, take her. very easy grader and helpful with papers if you go and ask for help. you can get up to 40 points of extra credit also, but english 111 no matter the professor has alot of homework
She talks all hour about useless stuff that relates to nothing that will help you. she uses the class time to talk about the book you are reading. when you ask a question you get a look that makes you feel dumb and when you ask for help and when she does help it is useless
I thought Michlitsch was a good professor, you read four books and have three essays, all around 4-5 pages. Her class was a good preparation for future classes and you should get an A if you keep up with the readings and put 100% effort into the essays!
I liked the class a lot and thought Michlitsch was a good professor. Make sure you stay caught up and you should get an A. There are a TON of extra credit opportunities. She gives what some might call busy work, but it's easy points! I recommend her!
The very first day she actually learned everyone's names and got us to learn each other's names, which was really nice. She is nice and offers a lot of extra credit.
Easy grader if you do what she asks. Kind of a lot of homework. Easy but time consuming. She responds to emails pretty fast and will answer any questions. She also likes to give a lot of extra credit opportunities! And also sometimes picks favorites. Get those brownie points!!
To start off she always calls on students and once the attempt to answer her usless question, she shuts them down with her face expressions.I never participated in class because when i would she would make me feel like a complete idiot.I learned more English in Kindergarten than in her class. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Read, read, read. Sometimes two books a week. Michlitsch is strongly opinionated. Class discussions are vague and not always helpful to understanding the book. A lot of small group work. Quizzes almost every class. Pros: she's a great grader, extremely helpful and very passionate about her job. Hard work, but I love the professor. (Would not take)
She never posts anything on D2L so you never really know what your grade is. She grades your papers SUPER hard, even though she doesn't tell you specifically what she wants with them. Makes you feel stupid. We have gone through 6 books in a semester and she moves quickly through them. Quizzes every day on the readings. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Worst professor I have ever had at WSU. Personally will judge not only your work, but you as a person. She acts nice in front of other staff and students, but if she pulls you aside she will make you feel horrible about yourself and stupid. I never had a problem with English until I took her ONE credit class. DO NOT TAKE HER.
If you don't try you won't get a good grade in this class. She smiles all the time even when she is criticizing you which can come off scarily condescending, but that's not her intent. Use her anecdotal tangents in your papers, they're related to a degree. Very intelligent. She knows her stuff. Only critique: takes a while to grade things.
You definitely work for your grade in this class, especially on papers. Utilize her corrections and go see her if you're confused. Reading is essential as she gives reading quizzes almost every class to ensure you are reading. Takes attendance every day. Overall, her class was challenging, but it wasn't the worst class I have had.
She often times made me feel like my interpretations of our books were wrong and made me feel very dumb, also she did not make the books easier to understand so I honestly did not enjoy this class at all. The best part was when it was over.
This class was terrible. I am usually understanding of some professors but her class was brutal. As someone who is African American, taking an African American literature course with her was extremely disappointing. She makes you feel stupid for your answers and is very vague in class. Quizzes are hard even if you do read. Wouldn't recommend!!
When I first had Dr. Michlitsch, she really intimidated me. She's honest, but also intelligent. She won't mince words on her feedback, and she makes you work for your grades. She's not an easy A, but sometimes I think it's good to have a professor that really makes you fight to do well. Keep that in mind if you take her class.
This class was very intriguing, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the topic. Gretchen is nice, and knows the material very well. If you read the books and take notes, you will do well in this class.
She was one of the most caring profs I've had. A student was out of class for surgery, and she sent him a get well soon card! When I needed to miss class for my mental health, she was super understanding and helped me make up my work. She expects you to read between 50-100 pgs per class, but if you manage your time it isn't bad. Quizzes every class
She is a super caring and understanding professor. She makes an effort to get to know you! LOVED HER!
She is the best professor I've ever met. Super intelligent and caring. She always asks real inspirational and challenging questions. Never expect a certain answer from her, since there is a space for you to rethink your preconceptions and to change your way of thinking. Work with her, if you want to be a critical and independent thinker.
Make sure that you participate during class discussions. One critique: This professor often has a very particular answer in mind when she asks a question. If you answer poorly, she will let you know through her facial expressions. There were times when I thought I'd said something offensive, just because of her facials. Interesting books though.
This class is fine, and Dr. Michlitsch is a great professor. She helps break things down to an understandable level if you're struggling. But her expression as we talk as a class, and the way she responds to input that differs from her own interpretation, is incredibly condescending.
She seems overall confused most of the time. Whenever you answer her questions, she gives a look of disgust and doesn't respond to your answers. Pop quizzes that she reads OUT LOUD so quickly. Cold calls on students. We told her the amount of homework she was assigning was excessive and she did not care. Dullest and worst professor I've ever had
Professor Michlitsch requires lots of out of class reading for each class on top of researching and preparing papers. She will spend a lot of time in class going over the reading and criticizing your answers to her daily pop quiz. She will ramble and get off topic very easily and confuse everyone including herself. She is accessible outside class.
She tends to ramble off about the reading and saves the important stuff to talk about at last minute. She also calls on students and grills them until they answer the way that she wants. she also seems confused about what we are talking about and often takes time to sit in her own thoughts in between sentences. Nice, but wouldn't recommend
By far the WORST professor that I have ever taken/heard of. She picks on random students and EXPECTS everyone to ALWAYS know the answer. She makes you feel so so dumb. One time I had to ask her for help, and she told me she is so behind with other classes, that she can't talk and is unable to help me. DO NOT TAKE WITH HOPES OF PASSING.
As many people have noted, Michlitsch makes students feel stupid with condescending looks during class. She assigns ridiculously long readings and doesn't return assignments in an even remotely punctual manner. She grades harshly without providing many critiques. Discussion was never allowed to get deep and always stayed surface level. Don't take.
The readings & assignments were simpleas long as you read. However, youll never get an A. She doesnt give constructive feedback so its unclear on what you did wrong. Be prepared to do your best & not get anything out of it. She has rude face expressions & your opinion doesnt matter. If you want to question your life then take this class!
Incredibly kind outside of class, but in class just the most condescending prof I've ever had.
A very heavy-reading course, but the info was interesting. It isn't one textbook; it's about 10 seperate actual books that you read one after the other. Tests are a bunch of writing (essays and short answers), but she gets to know you by name and takes attendance everyday. Not incredibly hard if you put work into the course.
Touch grader, personally think I shouldve gotten an A but thats just my opinion. Do all of the reading and out good effort into your essays. Also be prepared to get called on in class all of the time.
If you put in the work needed for this course, Dr. Michlitsch is understanding of outside factors that impact attendance and such. Quizzes on daily reading force you to read the content (8 books this semester!) but keep you participating and knowing what's up. Prepare to think you know the answer to a question and get it completely wrong, though!
Extremely condescending. Will never turn grades in on time. Be ready to never have the right answer because she never likes anything anyone has to say. Read the assigned text, as you will receive three reading quizzes a week, but she will never return them to you. Gives ZERO comments to help you improve your papers. Avoid her at all costs.
Gretchen doesn't give constructive feedback past "good" and "???". Never came to class on time or put her students as a priority. She had us read VERY triggering books, and when we were asked our opinions, we always are wrong. She gives dirty looks that are very discouraging. Such a condescending professor. I can't believe I paid money for this!!
I felt that Dr. Michlitsch's teaching and grading methods were very unfair. The entire class was very frustrated with their papersshe hardly ever gave A's on papers and the feedback wasn't useful. She prioritized grading her lower-level classes so we never got to see our 3rd or 4th paper before the end of the semester. Wouldn't take again.
Dr.Michlitch is a good professor but can be a tough grader on papers. There are quizzes every day on the content you were supposed to read. In class, you will discuss the book and your participation matters and she will randomly call on you, some of her questions can be very in-depth for a lower level class that most people take for an elective.
In class discussions were not always in depth and more of a summary of what was read. At the beginning of class she often gives short reading comprehension quizzes. Class did not always follow the syllabus and instructions were unclear at times. Overall a very nice professor and will help or answer questions.
never explained any materials even when asked, would constantly talk about how much we "didn't know" about writing and how she can't believe she has to teach us "basic skills". quiz on every chapter reading at the beginning of every class. her grading never makes sense and varies person to person even if their essays were similar skill. DONT TAKE
So much reading, in one semester we have read 7 novels 2 of which were added the first day of class. Papers and exams took over a month to come back with heavy emphasis on grammar. In fact she will cross out the word you used and in place put a synonym, take points off for grammar. Does not matter if it is a pop quiz or a essay.
ENG390 Gave an article in Spanish with no translation. Took a month to give back papers. Lectures don't help at all and students mostly teach each other. Exams hurt my hands being pages of hand written stuff. Takes points off for grammar and overly corrects. Does not care for the content you are trying to write about only the grammar.
I have NEVER had a professor so condescending and rude to students in my entire life. Not only is her classroom conduct so unprofessional her attitude is horrendous. She rolls her eyes at students and has said offensive language during class. Right answers are based on HER opinions and surface level discussions.
Worst professor I've had in three years. No one learned anything in this class. We were never given reasons our readings, the feedback for papers was nonexistent, she took five weeks to grade one paper, and graded grammar on everything including the hand-written exams. She did not provide any rubric for her grading even when asked multiple times.
Dr. Michlitsch is the most disappointing professor I have had as WSU. She displays horrific in-class conduct, has no clear grading criteria, she fails to adequately teach class content, etc. Her instruction is a blight on an otherwise amazing department. Avoid Dr. Michlitsch at all costs.
This professor is infuriating. Her class is 10% analysis and 90% rereading the homework. Her grading is impossible. Expects her 18-20 yo students to write at the level of a 45 yo & expects perfection from essays. Grades exams like essays & takes points off for things like grammar/spelling a word wrong. +Don't expect to get assignments back...ever.
Don't take her class unless you're prepared to be argued with and potentially spend class periods having the previous night's reading assignment read back to you. Know that your grammar and spelling will probably be more important than the analysis that you're doing. Get to know your classmates well because you will need to depend on each other!
Dr. Michlitsch is by far the worst professor I've had. The entire course was us sitting in silence, waiting for her to figure out how to word her own notes, or her belittling everything any of us said. Nothing you could say was good enough. The people in this class were the only thing good about it - I swear all of us are trauma-bonded bc of her...
Dr. Michlitsch is the most disappointing professor I have met at WSU. She does not understand how to communicate topics to the class, especially her expectations. She's lazy when it comes to grading papers/exams and is by far incapable of teaching. Save your money and your mental health.
Michlitsch is really difficult to have. She tends to cold call all the time, and we would have to read 40-70 pgs per class and she gave quizzes for each reading. Be ready to be docked points for your handwriting and grammar! For a white professor who consistently teaches a class on African American literature, she seems to love to say the n-word!
Dr. Michlitsch is a good professor if you like reading and formatting essays. I learned a lot of skills about writing in this class, but it was difficult. The attendance in this class is mandatory, and your grade will reflect your attendance. Plan to read 40-70 pages before every class. You will be quizzed on insignificant details of the reading.
"But it's the only English 111 class that works with my schedule!!" I promise you it's not worth it to take this class with her. Beware of pop quizzes, NOTHING being posted on D2L, poor time management, nonsensical essay grading, never getting grades back, and pop quizzes. she's kind outside of class but condescending in the classroom. DO NOT TAKE
I enjoyed my class with Dr. Michlitsch. She is not as bad as people say. The reading quizzes are easy to pass as long as you actually read. The syllabus tells you everything you need to know. Take advantage of her office hours because she gives good advice. She may come across as standoffish but she is actually a very kind and caring person.
She doesn't use D2L, so you are left in the dark about your grades all semester. If you ask her for your grade information, you will need to calculate your own score. Didn't finish grading her work until weeks after it was supposed to be completed. She is a "tough grader," as in she hardly ever gives A's. Said the n-word in class! Avoid her class.
You'll be expected to read 40+ pages per night, then expected to do a pop quiz at the start of each class based on the reading. There were many times where I had trouble retaining the book because it was extremely difficult and then would fail the quiz. Is also one of the most condescending professors I have EVER had. Beware!!!!
