Best math prof ever! She helps everyone and cares about you
Makes frequent mistakes on the board, do they just hand out Phd's now?
very hard, but is somewhat helpful
worst math instructor ever
She was like a kindergarten teacher, only in a calculus class. She was always helpful, and understanding. She is also very personable in the classroom.
Gretchen is one of the best math teachers I have ever had at SVSU. I think she does a super job!!
Very sweet teacher but confusing. Doesn't really know how to teach clearly.
Very Very helpful and leniant to my time schedule, allowing me to miss classes and make up tests with no problem. AWESOME!
A teacher that will answer any of your questions over and over. Goes slowly through the material. Would take a class with her again.
If you like math theory, she's ok, but in general, if you are just trying to understand math, you'll just barely scrap by.
Dr. Mooningham is a very sweet lady and always willing to help. One of the most lenient teachers I've ever had - turn in homework whenever you get it done. Confusing/jumbled teaching style. Tests are not too bad.
If you have no experience in calc you will be have to study and teach a lot of the concepts to yourself. Even though she doesnt teach the material very well, she is a very sweet lady and will let you turn in stuff whenever.
One of the few bright spots around the math dept. Loved having her for every class I could! She should teach her husband how to communicate and not lie to students...
She's really nice, and has a great teaching method, but her lectures are kinda hard to follow. She has a huge curve, and lets you turn stuff in late all the time. Overall, shes a good math teacher, the best i've had here at SVSU.
Very nice lady. If anything, she over-teaches the material, but better too much than not enough.
Great teacher. Happy, good attitude, maybe a little slack on the slackers (football types in the back corner never paid attention, she didnt seem to mind.) The class is simple, dont understand why everyone cant get an A.
She's wonderful. I really struggle with math, she was great about answering 101 questions both in and out of class. Her clarity is great. SVSU's math department sucks, however, Gretchen Mooningham is the best thing that has happened to SVSU's math depart.
teaching quite confusing, repeats things way too much, copies right out of book, confuses herself, doesnt explain things too well
she is a wierd, and very uninformative teacher. she has a very downhearting teaching method.
She reads the book. She doesn't explain.
She is a terrible professor. She does not explain anything, so just reads from the book. Limited examples, tells lots of stories about her husband. I would recommend that you find another professor to take this class from.
She was hard to keep up with. She explain the homework from the last class for most of the class, then for about 20 minutes tried to teach the next lesson. I wouldn't take here again unless no one else was teaching the class.
What sweet lady. If only she could teach math. I enjoyed going to her class because she was very nice and understanding. She does try hard to teach the material to us, but I seemed to have trouble with it. If you are not a math x-pert, take someone else for math 125... Don't let anyone tell u diff.
best math prof. I 've had at svsu. She actually explains things in a way that make's the material easy to understand. She spends too much time on homework though, and usually shows up late
Class is hard regardless of teacher, however, I don't think I would have passed if I had some other professors. I will take her again if I can.
Her explinations are very good. She knows how to put things in a very simple way. Extremley sweet and pleasent to be around.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. I got a 4.0 only because I was able to teach myself. She was unwilling to answer questions and when she did she rambled around the point. Class was completely disorganized and she was late EVERY day. Her "teaching" style is pathetic and the only way to get a good grade is to teach yourself.
Unless you are very good at Calculus don't take her. Not clear to me at all. She helps, but her explanation is confusing.
I suck at math, but Professor Mooningham totally made me understand it, I suggest taking her for as much math as you can. This woman can teach!!!
Whatever you do, DO NOT take her for any math class!!! I dropped her after 2 days because the only thing I learned was the history of statistics. She doesn't teach you anything. She rambles on about the stupidest things.
Dr. Mooningham is one of the nicest professors. She is always willing to help and answer questions in and out of the classroom. Her tests were very fair and she provided many homework and pre-test examples. Considering the Math department at SVSU, she is by far one of the best professors here.
The best math professor I have ever had so far at SVSU. I would take another math class from her if that says anything. She's extremely fair and generous. I had NO interest in math before and have had to repeat two of my previous courses because of the math professors at SVSU, and right now I have an A-. She helped me to see I'm not math retarded.
I found that she was over clear on the areas that were easily understood and went very fast over the harder parts to understand. I baught the study guide with the book and was very happy to have it. I also found her Maple assignments pointless and not helpful.
Oh my gosh I can't even begin to start!! DON'T TAKE HER!! STAY AWAY!! She was the worst teacher I ever had. She was totally unprepared for class. She even says in front of the class more than once, that she doesn't know if what she is doing right. No wonder the math courses are under probation they are a bunch of idiots!! She speaks very slow!
I LOVE HER! I am a math major and have taken almost every class the university has to offer, and she is by far the best math teacher they have. She makes sure you are understanding material, and is friendly and approachable, which is hard to come by. Appreciate every moment you have with her, she is the best you will get.
After going on and taking 162 with someone else I appreciate this prof. much more. I thought she was rediculously hard when I had her but she really isn't it's just the class that is rediculously hard. Out of all Math teachers she is one of the better ones and I have a very clear understanding of what calc I is and it has helped with other classes
Extremely boring and can't explain anything. What a joke. I hope you can teach yourself the math if you take her class because you won't be learning anything from her.
Can't explain the material and is extremely boring. do yourself a favor and avoid gretchen if at all possible, if not then i feel your pain.
Professor was easier to understand than her husband. She was generous on her grading. If you got the answer wrong to a problem and had the correct formula, you would get partial credit. If I had to take another Math class and she was teachign, I would take her. She was willing to help in any way, even stayed over if you were still taking a test.
She might know her math but she certainly doesn't know how to teach it, she's not pleasant to look at either so why even take this professor...I wish I hadn't.
shes a good mathematician however her interpretations to the class were confusing and unclear.
Come on people, give her a break. She is very helpful and willing to clarify anything. She also is very understanding and lets you make up assignments if you missed them. Also is a very fair grader, she adds points if you need them at the end to pass the class, and even curves.
Very Helpful!
She doesn't teach why but she goes through a million example problems. She's very helpful
She made this class VERY easy. only assigned 2-3 problems a week for homework and got points for them. She is very nice, caring, and understanding. The material is easy to learn because she gives to many examples. She even pushed back an exam to give ppl more time to practice who were having trouble. nice lady!
She is a horrible teacher. She doesnt know what shes talkiing about EVER!
When taking notes make sure they aren't in pen, she makes a lot of mistakes on the board so following along becomes difficult. Extremely nice woman but she isn't the best math teacher. You will have a quiz every week but as long as you study you should do fine. The class starts off adding fractions and makes its way all the way to calculus.
She is a very nice person, but she is not a very good teacher. She tries, but is constantly making mistakes! If a student doesn't catch it, she will never even notice. This can make class confusing. Her class is also very boring. She will spend an hour explaining one thing. I would not recommend taking her class.
Mrs. Mooningham is a great teacher! She makes learning math fun and is extremely helpful. The class looks intimidating but it's actually not so bad if you study. Some of the topics are covered too quickly, but besides that I'd highly recommend Mrs. Mooningham.
A./G. Mooningham (I've seen her name both ways) is a really nice professor. She is pretty easy; you get a page of notes for the tests, quizzes are open book/notes. Most quizzes are not in class but a couple even hw problems that you turn in. She isn't a great teacher though. She gets herself confused and writes really small on the board.
Gretchen is a very personable lady. She welcomes visits during office hours, and you will need to take advantage of that. Her lectures are often confusing and the book was very difficult to read.
Let's get real people. Math is hard, and so finding the perfect teacher to teach it is not very plausible. However, any teacher who is willing to help, no matter how difficult or unclear the material may seem, is one that I would shoot for. As long as you show initiative and do your part, she is willing to help you do what you need to succeed.
She explained things well. When she did problems on the board she would tend to confuse herself or end up with the wrong answer. She gives partial credit on exams which was extremely helpful.
Very nice teacher. Does make mistakes a lot. Exams were never impossible and she did curve them. Did not require a lot of home work to turn in, just a problem or two every once in a while. The Maple assignments were kinda annoying. Overall a good teach though.
Will be dropping! She only uses examples from the book which gives poor examples. Homework not explained. When whole class asked for help she told us to read the book and only gave further explanation after being ambushed by whole class. Had 4.0 prior to taking her!
refuses to explain or clarify homework and only uses examples from the book which is poorly written
After coming out of Calc 2, which was hard and the notes were very thorough, this class was very different. The lectures have a very loose structure but concepts are easy to follow. A little ditzy sometimes, but understandable. Very nice and down to earth. :)
The good: Little homework, if you have a question she'll do her best to answer it, you get a cheat sheet for the test, her grading is very generous. The bad: She lectures like it's a history class
She is very nice and generous. When she tries to explain things in class she confuses herself constantly and then confuses you because she doesn't know what she did wrong. She is horrible at explaining. I've been teaching myself out of class and going to the resource center just to hardly pass.
She really likes to talk, easy to get off topic. She over explains things which can be helpful, but if you ask a specific question she won't answer it...more like makes you still figure it out on your own. Pretty frustrating really. Overall, she wouldn't be my first choice, but she wasn't terrible.
Hard to follow lectures, tests on material not covered in class. Does allow notes on tests but they are still hard. I took calc in high school and did well, this was a much greater challenge. She is a nice person, just not a good teacher. Teaching method is not good.
Tells too many personal stories during class and always gets off track. Never truly answers a question you have. Nice person, but not a good teacher.
Worst math teacher I've had at SVSU. Very hard to follow lectures because she is always getting off topic. Her tests are also extremely hard. She gives you review problems but they do not help. The problems on the exams are way harder.
Worst math teacher I have ever had. Blocked her out in class and taught myself and got help from tutor center. She is horrible!
She is not a good professor but is a very nice lady. She will try to help you make up your work if needed but really doesn't teach much in class. Sometimes it is pointless to show up.
This is a very difficult class in general and she made it a lot harder. She goes off on tangents and does't expelling the material well. I just taught myself and didn't really pay attention in class. The tests are somewhat hard but she does give you a study guide. I really liked math before but now i don't.
Hard to follow. Often, she will work on one or two homework problems from the previous class for the majority of the class period, then she has about ten minutes left to actually teach us what we need to know. You will have to teach yourself a lot of the material in this class. I took calc in high school and got an A, but this is much harder.
She is a very nice person, just has a different teaching style. Will spend majority of class going over homework problems. You will have to teach yourself for most of the course. Gives partial credit on almost all questions on the tests and you can have a cheat sheet for all exams, as well.
I really disliked this class. I found it useless to go to class because she didn't really "teach". She also went over a lot of material that we would not be tested on. Her tests did not make much sense and the final was super hard. You could have a cheat sheet for all of the tests, though.
I was lucky enough to have known Calculus before having her because the way she taught the class was not effective. On many occasions she spent far too much time solving an unimportant homework problem, leaving as little as 8 minutes for that day's lesson. She is a nice professor, but needs to work on staying focussed and knowing what is important.
Very sweet lady, but honestly did not know how to teach. I came in knowing calculus and I was still baffled by her teaching. She is rarely there during her office hours. However, lots of extra credit and extremely fair in grading.
Statistics is a tough class. It's hard to understand. Teaching it must be difficult and it showed in her lectures. She understands that the information is difficult and grades fairly to represent that. If you put in a solid effort she grades on a curve and that effort is reflected.
Dr. Mooningham is incredibly boring. The class is 2 hours long and we barely get through one section of the text book per class. Be ready to spend some time on your own and teach yourself. We fell a few weeks behind in the syllabus because she goes so slow. Tests aren't bad but vocabulary intensive.
She is terrible. You might as well not go to class because you will learn better on your own and she will talk about random stuff the whole class. The most boring class I have ever taken and I have not learned a single thing from her since I started this course. Good luck. You will need it.
Mrs. Mooningham is a very nice and caring professor. You honestly teach yourself but she tries! Overall a good hearted person!
She talks about random things throughout class and does not take time to actually teach you. I had to spend every day at the tutoring center to complete my assignments because the material was never discussed in class. Sweet lady, but too old to be teaching anymore.
She has lots of knowledge but does not know how to get it across to the students well. If you ask for help she will give it to you. Make sure you do the bookwork so things make more sense.
She was VERY flexibale when it came to grades, you just have to talk to her, but she get's off topic easily and can't teach well.
SHE IS THE WORST! do not sign up for a class with her whatever you do!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO RANDOM & off topic constantly. You WILL be teaching yourself. BORING!
This is the worse professor ever. You literally have to teach yourself the entire class. She randomly goes off topic the entire class and then throws random problems at you at the end of class. If you ask her a question she will think shes answering it, but in reality she isn't.
Very hard class but if you dedicate a lot of time to the homework problems you will be fine. Go to class and try to pay attention. Live at the tutoring center for the homework assignments; the tutors are there to help you. Mrs. Mooningham is a nice lady but a terrible professor.
Worst professor ever. Doesn't go over the material at all, and then quizzes you over stuff you didn't even learn in class. She goes off topic most of the time. Almost every class she would start the lesson with like fifteen minutes left in the class. Worst biostats professor ever. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dr. Mooningham is a nice professor, but her lectures can get a bit boring. It's important to use the textbook because the subject material is frequently confusing. She allows notes on tests (with the final being open book) which was really convenient. She curved grades pretty generously toward the end of the class.
Gets off topic. Shows up late. Talks about her husband OFTEN. Holds the class passed lecture hours. Can not summarize anything. Can not simplify anything. Possibly the worst Math teacher at SVSU
Do not take this professor. So many of the students were confused in class and did not receive help. She grades tests very harsh and does not offer extra credit. There are questions on exams that are not what we reviewed in class and not what was in the homework. Overall very difficult to learn from this teacher and you need to teach yourself.
Confused herself and students during lecture. You pretty much need to teach yourself
She spends most of the class talking about things that are not even relevant to math, for example: the personalities of flies. She picks extremely hard homework problems, so spend lots of time in the tutoring center. I am good at math and struggled with this course because she does not teach the material.
Mooningham isn't very bad at teaching, she just talks and talks and talks. You pretty much have to teach yourself. Even going to see her during her office hours risks story time the whole time. She knows her stuff but she doesn't know how to stay on topic.
This class was basically an independent study for me. She had quizzes at the start of every class. After the quiz I would skip the lecture and go home. As long as you knew what sections you had to study for the next quiz you can get through the class. She tries hard to teach, but you will be wasting your time going to the lectures. Hard class.
Gretchen is a cute as heck person, super chatty, I wish she was my grandma, just not my math professor. I basically taught myself everything, relied heavily on the book and outside sources. Get a math tutor, she knows what she's talking about but cannot teach. Even stuff I knew before this class she confused me on and I left dumber than before.
She's a sweet lady, but bad at time management. We wouldn't get to learning the lessons until the last 20 minutes of class, which made for rushed and confusing teaching. Take this with a friend or make a friend, because you will be teaching yourself most of the material. Luckily, she's generous with curving and extra credit and open to questions!
She is a very nice person, but she is a very poor teacher. She definitely knows what she is talking about, but she does not know how to deliver it effectively. However, she is very approachable and wants you to pass. A lot of her exams are graded on a curve, and she tries to give you as many extra points as she can. Good luck.
She is a very nice lady and wants you to pass, but does not know how to teach the material very well. That being said she curves the tests and tries to give you as many points as she can and will work with you. Even though she is not the best teacher I would still take her classes again because she's willing to work with you.
She is very sweet and talkative. Talks too much and doesn't teach the material well. I had to teach myself all of the material and spend most of my time in the tutoring center. The only positive is that she curves the tests. Would not recommend.
If you don't go to tutoring or if you can't teach yourself all material you will fail. Never knows what she is talking about and will ramble on about one question for an hour at a time and make everybody even more confused. However, she does give you a review for each of the three tests and you can use one page of notes for each test.
The tests is nothing like the few examples given in class and is on a lot of material so it is ensential you stay on top of your work. In order to pass you will have to teach yourself. She tend to spend most of class time talking about other things. Some classes she will even read the text book to you instead of showing examples.
Talks about random stuff for 2 hours of class then tells you that you have a quiz over the material next class. Literally everything she teaches is wrong so we ready to teach yourself and DONT LISTEN TO WHAT SHE SAYS. And challenge the test questions if you get it wrong because she gets half the questions wrong when she does the questions herself.
The material is already tough to understand, but having her as a professor makes it way worse!!! First this class should not be 2 hours, only bc its way to much information to understand. Shes very nice but not a good professor, Please Im begging you DO NOT take her as a professor, youll hate your life and yourself for taking her class!!!
I didn't mind her. Had her my first semester, I did just fine. She lets you use a whole front and back notes on every test and 3 whole front and back notes on exam. How can you not pass, just use her study guide to make your notes with examples. She wasn't the best teacher, slow, not good time management, but examples she did were based on your Qs
Overall she isn't the best at explaining concepts, but she is extremely understanding and caring. She truly wants everyone to pass and if you put the effort in and attend lectures you will have no problems getting a C. Granted I took her summer class, but we were allowed multiple pages of notes for our 2 exams. I would take her again.
Shes one of the nicest professors around. She cares about you, your education, and your grade. She expects you to know the material but will help however she can. Lectures are tough because she goes solely off the book so if you struggle to learn that way, then the class will be quite difficult for you.
Professor Mooningham is a very kind professor. You can tell she really cares for her students. I was not a fan of her teaching style and found her class to feel longer than it really was. I would recommend taking this course with Professor Mooningham if you like to learn things on your own.
Extremely nice person but not the greatest professor. Take her if you don't mind learning by yourself and just need a grade on your transcript. Grading isn't tough, but feedback is nonexistent. The quizzes and final are really easy compared to the class leading up to this one. Solid choice overall if you don't need handholding.
She is a very nice professor and cares for her students, but I struggled a lot in this class. When it comes to math I learn by seeing problems worked out and there was none of that. It was basically just reading the beginnings of the sections in books. So if you learn by examples I wouldn't suggest her but if you learn on your own well then yes
