Decent class Overall
I was real scared of this class when I started but Gretchen is very clear on assignments which helps a lot. I got a decent grade. She's pretty nice and gives very helpful advice.
This class is intense and so is she. You get a new writing assignment basically every week. Attendance is mandatory because she assigns new things and the calendar on the syllabus she gives out isnt correct and not detailed. This class is mandatory to graduate so be prepared for a LOT of work.
Great teacher, she is amazing! i loved her, she makes art so much fun. she uses the textbook. reading the textbook b4 classs is helpful, but not manditroy. MAKE NOTECARDS they will give you an A if you study them. You have to go to class. her lectures are important for the tests she gives. Overall she is an excellent teacher!
I loved this class, she might talk too fast sometimes but you just need to tell her to slow down. She is clear in what she wants you remember for the test and you HAVE to do the flashcards if you want to pass the class with an A. The only problem with her is since she has kids, she can't grade as fast as you want her to but she is really nice.
This class is pretty easy as long as you make good flash cards for the test. She lectures really fast which can be hard to follow. Her lectures are extremely boring but that is just art. She was always willing to help and wants all of her students to do well. Just make note cards for the test and you should walk away with an A or B.
One of the best teachers i have ever had! she is funny and cool, i really enjoyed the class. I would not say it was hard but it does involve a lot of writing ;interesting writing though( example we did a research paper pretending we were interviewing our fav. artist, how cool is that?). I learned about punctuation, amazing artists, etc. take her! =)
EXTREMELY SWEET. Material is clear cut to the point. Her lectures go along with the book. She's very passionate about art and it shows. She has light humor that's appropriate. Take good notes, and I mean GOOD NOTES. Write every word she says. Study hard for the exams, and the class will be an easy A. Folder is easy as well.
This class is so interesting! I thought art history would be boring, but all of a sudden you are stating facts about what you learned in real life. Her tests are strange because afterwards, you feel like you failed, but so did everyone else so there's a huge curve and you get an A. Must study
For this class you want to take notes or have a friend who takes notes. Make note cards to study for the test, it helps a lot. You can bring your laptop to class and people normally just go on the internet. Overall i liked this class and it wasn't too hard.
Great teacher! She keeps things interesting. Class never feels like it drags on, which is good because well, it is art history. The textbook isn't necessary if you pay attention in class and/or have a good memory. I got an A without using the textbook (but I DID pay attention in class)!
Gretchen is the best teacher here at Fullerton!!! Love her, she is awesome! I took her for Art223A and Art 300. In Art223A, she was awesome! She explains everything really well and in a fun way. Only tests and 1 museum paper. Art300 was a lot of work with lots of papers. But she really wants to help you! Best teacher!!
I thought art would be a fun and easy class. I thought wrong -_- she is very sarcastic and gives attitude for no reason. For example, during a test review class period someone asked a question and she said thats a stupid question and kept on talking about side stories not about the test.... Take her if you're not annoyed easily
This class does require you to attend if you want a good grade. Her tests are based on exactly what she says in class so take good notes. She tells you to study with flash cards and it is honestly the only way to do well. If you are good at memorizing things this is a good class for you.
This class is dull. I'm thought she was going to be a great professor but she is no help. All you do is take notes and then the test is on the little things you forget about that she lectures. Do not take unless you are an amazing listener and passionate about art. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Not a teacher for everyone. She goes over a lot of material and never posts her notes online so coming to class is a must. For each exam there are a ton of images to memorize so don't take her class if you aren't up for that. Its possible to get an A in her class if you put in the work.
I really liked Gretchen. She's rally nice and the class is super intresting. For those who are taking Art 101 with her though I strongly recommend taking super good and detailed notes. Anyting she repeats more than twice for a given piece of work will most likely be on the exam. The projects and paper were pretty easy. I got an A on everything.
Help you out a lot and earnestly wants you to be successful. The class is really laid back and as long as you keep up with all the homework, you will do good. No exams, just a lot of work and your final is a mock interview/portfolio. She is the sweetest and is open to helping you during and after you take her. Highly recommend her!
She has a roll sheet to keep attendance, but i do not think it affects your grade, although to pass the class with an A you need to go to class as along as you go, pay attention and take notes this class is a piece of cake. The test are easy if you do flash cards, she is very funny and understanding.
She was an awesome teacher, really easy and you don't really have to participate. All she does is go through ppt and show you different pieces of art. I thought it was gonna be boring but it was interesting. I highly recommend her!
She's an excellent professor that honestly cares about her students! Her exams are not hard as long as you pay attention in class.Probably the best professor I've had, would highly recommend her :)
Class is easy, and the "final" of a group interview is really fun and extremely helpful. It's obvious that she teaches out of passion and loves helping students. However, she seems to play favorites.
Very helpful when critique time comes around. She'll wonder around and look at everyone's process to see how we're doing and if help is needed. Gretchen can really tell when you're in a slump or fustrated with a piece so she'll announce for everyone to take a break. She wants students to have fun rather than stress over work. Art should be fun!
Professor Potts is like a really cool mom! She is a mom but you get what I mean. She is very clear and energetic when giving her lectures and is open to hearing about anything new in the art world. Attendance is taken sometimes, only 3 tests plus the final, take good notes and you'll be fine! FLASHCARDS are the best way to study for this class.
Lectures are interesting but sometimes conflict with the book(for tests, go with what she says in lecture). Tests are mostly lecture based. She gives you the material to study prior to the test; you just have to listen in lecture to get all the info down, or read the book for extra material.
Attendance is key! Lectures are long, but filled with a lot of info so take notes. Tests are pretty easy, just make sure to study with flashcards! Also, if some images were not posted as study material in Titanium, tell her during the test!!! Overall, pretty easy as long as you do the work.
Shes has that sarcastic humor that makes the class more enjoyable. You can tell shes really passionate about the subject and is open to help anyone. The class is mandatory and she takes attendance. If you don't, you can still find the content from the textbook.
Potts is a good teacher who grades to the point. Her class is set on a curve. You definitely need to attend class because thats where the tests come from. If you make flashcards and study them thoroughly and memorize them, you'll pass the class
probably the easiest class you will take in college. she takes roll every day, most of the time she lets you out early so showing up shouldnt be a problem. there is one essay that is graded easily, easy art projects and 4 simple tests. every test is about what she talks about in class. study for 30 min before test and you should pass with an a.
Gretchen is super cool. She's very chill and respects her students. I had her for Art 201A and Art 300. She does not give very much homework or tests. She really engages with her students and cares about their progress.
Gretchen is an amazing teacher and has helped me improve my writing skills, especially when writing about art. Assigns a generous amount of papers, but don't be surprised because it is a writing course. She gives us the opportunity to edit our papers in different steps. Assignments were fun. Favorite one was the resumecover letterjob interview.
Makes the class fun as long as you try to be talkative during work time and during critiques. The wire project is the only project you have to worry about in terms of actual outside homework and 2 short essays (one on art museum visit and another watching a video on an artist). Always ask her if your progress is good and she will help fix issues
As long as you attend class, you should be fine. Most of the exams are literally based on her lectures so pay attention & take good notes. Professor Potts provides a study guide for every exam you take, so make sure you review it b/c everything on the study guide shows up. Also, I didn't even touch the textbook so there's no need to purchase one.
Listening every bit of detail that she says about each art piece is important. If you miss out on one detail, there goes one answer to a question on the test.
She does not use Taitanium what so ever. she takes roll everyday by passing a sign in sheet, and will let you out early often. there is one essay, easy art projects and 4 tests. every test is about a bunch of art works that she talks about in class. YOU DO NOT NEED THE TEXTBOOK, use flashcards to study. gives extra credit for 1 museum visit.
Lectures aren't too long, she sometimes would let us leave early. Everything on the lecture is on the tests. As long as you study and take good notes, you'll pass. She said to buy the textbook but we never used it! Don't buy it, it's a waste of money.
Her class was easy. Obviously, you will need to do some studying to get a decent grade but that's to be expected in an introductory art class. She says to read the textbook but c'mon now, WHO READS?! Show up for attendance and take notes on the works she goes over and you will pass. Don't bother buying/renting the textbook. It's all on her lectures
This class was seriously the easiest class I have taken so far. It's important to take notes during her lectures because her tests are based off of them. She curves the grading a bit which helps and also offers extra credit for 1 museum visit. If you study for the tests and show up, then the class is an easy A. DON'T BUY THE BOOK! We never used it.
The class is super easy and she is cool. Gives you plenty of opportunity to do well. Study hard for the exams (memorize the guides) because everything rides on them. I learned a lot and appreciate art more now because of it.
I felt very discouraged in her class because my classmates were much more skilled than me. Her ability to encourage students is lacking. She has a major communication barrier and attitude a lot of times. Comes in late to class very often, which is frustrating. It was an OK class.. nothing too terrible. Just wasn't for me.
This class is very easy if you put the effort in. Make the flashcards for the images like she tells you to! IT HELPS. Do the extra credit museum trip. You will have a couple random assignments off and on, but none of them are too difficult. You can easily get an A in this class if you do all the assignments and study. The tests are straightforward.
She is definitely my favorite professor so far. She is a lot of fun and makes great lectures. As long as you pay attention and study you should be able to pass with no problems. She has a great extra credit opportunity and really aims at helping the student.
A very straight forward class, you will not need a textbook because she lectures straight out of it. Make sure to pay attention and write down literally everything she says, because it will be on the test. She also provides a study guide for every exam.
If you take really good lecture notes you will do fine, but even then she tends to add in some pieces that she are not discussed during lecture and that are not on the study guide. Curves tests. there are 3 tests, 1 paper, and smaller homework projects. The tests are unpredictable. I got a 98 on the first, after the curve got a 88 on the second
She is a very chill woman, and had purple hair when I took the class. Attendance isn't graded but is pretty necessary. Fairly easy multiple choice tests as long as you take decent notes and study them a little once you get the study guides.
Definitely an easy class! There were 4 exams, but all were curved. Two papers, but technically one is just a rough draft. Make sure to make flashcards of the art! Attending class is also important since she gives extra info and artwork that arent in the textbook.
Some people may think its an easy class, but I didnt her teaching style. The materials and techniques used for the projects were not interesting to me at all. I felt bored and discouraged in her class.
She is a cool teacher but her class is too extensive for an art class. This class isn't terms and test. You have to memorize a lot and honestly its more stressful. Her class is an easy A but you have to show up and make the note cards. Also some lectures do get boring. I would take the class if you don't mind some work. Overall though shes great.
This class was completely lecture based. She puts up and image in front of the class and just talks about it. Theres no PowerPoints with her notes. Its a lot. Theres three tests. Each test is consumed with an average of 50-100 pictures. If you study hard and pay attention its easy. If you dont pay attention nor take notes, you wont pass.
Very easy to understand. She is funny & nice. Her lectures might seem pointless, but everything is in the exam. She gives you a study guide for all 3 exams. STUDY and you will pass. She hardly assigns hw, her assignments are basic & might have nothing to do with what we learned. Her extra credit is to go to an art museum and answer some questions.
Potts's class wasnt difficult at all. Just try your best to memorize art pieces and the artist and you'll be fine. You have at least 3-4 test including midterm and final and all are easy plus she curves each test. She doesnt give clear powerpoints w notes so you just have to listen and write everything she says. May seem hard but it is not.
FOCUS DURING LECTURES. Be prepared to write a lot because she has a lot of material to get through. Follow her note taking guide on the syllabus since power points are only pictures and her talking. Test are taking together as a class through a slide show.
Professor Potts is a well respected and hilarious. The class itself was very much lecture and test based, but I didn't find it too difficult so long as I was listening throughout the lecture. Also recommend using the book (if she assigns you one) and the internet to remember the name, materials, etc. of an image. It takes work, but it's possible.
I took this class at El Camino but very very easy and interesting!! Recommend!!!
Seriously, do not take her if you're looking for an easy class to fulfill the art requirement. Her class is so time consuming that I'd have to at times prioritize it over my major classes. She seems nice at first but makes condescending comments when students don't do work properly, ask "dumb" questions, etc. I thought she'd be WAY better.
She is an okay professor but expects you to memorize a lot of material for the exams. Lectures are boring but at least she posts the material you will be tested on Titanium. She is also lenient and curved tests often.
Goes through lectures too fast. Not a tough grader but there is a lot to memorize in her class. One of the exams was 100 questions long because there was like 60 artworks to remember. This is the most memorizing I've had to do and this is my third art history course. Good thing is that she provides study guides on only images she will test you on.
She is amazing professor! She is very funny and real when she talks. I think this class is an easy A but she is very lecture heavy and the lectures are based on images on the screen and she vocal notes on them. If you are not a fast typer/writer, I would recommend using a recorder.
Professor Potts is great!! She makes the lectures really interesting and she's really chill and fun. It's easy to pass if you show up (she does take attendance) and listen and take notes to her lectures. (She usually repeats important info). She provides study guides for the tests.
She is one of the best professors I've had. She gets to the point and is completely fair. She understands that if you are too tired and does not patronize you for your choices unless it is disrespectful. I am not saying she is amazing in every way but if I wanted to challenge myself and have a good experience, she is the fairest choice.
This professor is great. When you first meet her she seems intimidating and strict, but that's not the case. She has a lot of wise things to say and will always try her best to help out with projects. She has alot of knowledge in the art world and even thought her her tone sounds intimidating, she means well.
She is really nice at first she might seem strict. She is not a tough grader but their is alot of memorizing. You have to memorize artworks subject matter, content, era, context all these things. She teaches fast so I say record her or make sure you write/type fast because as she goes over the images she will speak quick. She gives extra credit.
The class was really hard I passed the first midterm but failed the second one as we had to memorize about 100photos. However you need to read the textbook and memorize the time periods(paleolthic, early Christian etc.) in the end she did curve the tests. Unless youre an art or history major I wouldnt take this class.
Super funny professor. Lectures are a bit boring, and tests were a little hard as well. She went the extra step in offering numerous extra credit assignments to help her students bring their grades back up. Even though it is a huge lecture class she does care about her students grades and well-being. Would definitely take again!
Professor Potts may be intimidating at first, but she is very supportive and nice! Lectures are heavy and you need to take specific notes ever class. FLASHCARDS are highly recommended to pass the class! Easy assignments and fair exams as longs you study! Overall good professor! Highly recommend if looking to satisfy a G.E in art.
I truly enjoyed her class and found her to be very understanding and nice ( had her during covid19 lol) I would recommend that you make flashcards and STUDY for the exams for they truly are the majority of your grade, as for Hw/classwork she gave very few but graded them quite harshly in my opinion. Also, you MUST show up to class & take GOOD NOTES
I took 3D with her and she is a very fun teacher with high expectations. If you do your work, and make an effort to fix any problems with your art, she will be happy. She is interesting to talk to also.
Professor Potts is a nice teacher but passive aggressive. If you ask dumb questions she will let you know and not answer them. Shes a tough grader and the tests are hard in my opinion. Memorizing over 50 art pieces and intensive minute details about them are almost impossible and thats is all youre expected to do.
I can't believe Gretchen isn't a 5 in average. The class is overall really great. Slow at first, due to COVID19 and the fact that 3D design requires gathering materials. Potts offers great care and a smooth transition for students coming in from high school. We have done 3 projects and the grading reflects how much effort you have put in. :)
She's not the best, but she's not the worst either. She's passive-aggressive and gets mad when you ask an "obvious" question. Taking notes can be confusing at times, so I recommend you use the textbook while she's lecturing. Even though I don't like this class, I still have an A+, so it's possible to pass. Study hard for the exams.
Potts manner of teaching is so wonderful and refreshing!! Shes patient and supportive, but really knows how to motivate her students. Shes great at building confidence and keeping lessons fun and engaging through a variety of activities that improve conversation, writing, and reading skills.
Potts is one of those professors that cares a lot about your mental health. Her lectures are pre-recorded and note-taking was very important. Had one meeting every week where she answered any questions you had. Exams were open book and open notes!!!
Expects you to memorize 100 images worth of art. Thought she would be way better but she seems not to care if her students pass her class or not.
In all honesty she was probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had before. She expected us to memorize 100 pictures for a test. She has a bad attitude as well when she was asked certain questions from the class. Then she just doesn't seem to really care if you do well or not.
I am currently waiting to take the Final Exam of this course, and this class is a joke. She has not even posted the exam, nor has reached out to other students who are also waiting for the exam. She necessarily grades harshly and is a very lazy professor. I wish I could go back in time and stop myself from signing up for this course. Please don't.
The most disorganized class I've had the (dis)pleasure of taking. Our class was supposed to be hybrid but we barely had meetings. She just irregularly bombed canvas with bunch of hour long lectures that were hard to follow. kept us guessing with what stunt she was gonna pull every meeting. To top it off our online final was ridden with typos.
I had never worked with 3D design before this class and the Professor was super helpful with it. Definitely go to class to work on the projects and be ready with your materials. Dont be afraid to ask for help because she is super helpful and wont judge you or get mad.
Please if youre considering taking this class, find another professor!! She had this course as a hybrid class but it eventually turned into an asynchronous class with rare zoom meetings. She also did not go over the material throughly and instead gave us hour long lectures. The exam average was a C at best in my class.
Only had 3 zooms. Rude and arrogant. Trash wifi too so everything she says gets cut off. Rarely responds to emails. Told us not to study dates then had date questions on the exams. Exams would have artwork not on the study guide & vise versa. Long, one-take, unedited, pre-recorded lectures. Lectures sometimes had misleading info. Don't take her.
Was suppose to be a hybrid class but only had a handful of zoom meetings and only was in person for the exams. I wish it was advertised this way.
Overall a great teacher, listen to her when she says to make flashcards and listen to her lectures, it is crucial to passing her class. Was advertised that we needed to buy a textbook for class, but we ended up not using it at all throughout the year. Her exams are worth a lot so make sure to study. Put a lot of effort into assignments and projects
An amazing professor and very passionate. She clearly tells you what to expect in her class as well. The tests can be overwhelming, so make sure to study ahead of time with flash cards ( total lifesavers ) and youll be set!
Took her over the winter. The most important thing about this class is watching the lectures, which are around 4-5 hours long a chapter, and taking good notes. I recommend taking notes all on one large document as you are watching. Your notes and the textbook are so crucial for the tests. There are also some small assignments that are fairly easy.
only take this class if it's your last option. some classes were so useless & unnecessary. she moves very quickly, & speaks fast about the subject. she doesn't repeat herself or write notes on her slides. she takes attendance randomly, that counts for credit. the week before spring break is EC btw...
Worst professor I've had at csuf. Unenthusiastic. Lectures are heavy and dull; she tangents making it confusing about what to expect on exams. Started taking attendance the day before spring break and took it sporadically then on, yet that behavoir of taking attendance is not clearly stated on her syllabus whatsoever.
She is a great professor . Definitely make a quizlet for every test based off of the images she gives to you to study
Her lectures weren't terrible, they just go by fast since so much is crammed into an hour. If you attended class and studied with flashcards, then the exams were straightforward so there shouldn't be an issue in passing them. Overall, she was cool and was clearly passionate about her material.
This class was not as bad as others make it out to be. There are three exams in this class, two midterms and the final. Extra credit is available for these three exams which helps a lot. The lectures are long, but as long as you pay a little bit of attention and take decent notes you will do fine in this class.
Fairly simple class, there were times where lectures were boring but try to take note of everything because little details will help with extra credit! Make flash cards and work with your classmates to create quizlets to help each other. Easy class to pass but not the one to choose if you want something with less work to do
She is a genuinely nice professor but I personally found it hard to keep awake during lectures. The course is an easy A/B as long as you can keep up on the provided material. A large chunk of the exam is directly from the lectures and unavailable anywhere else so take notes. She provided a textbook but we never ended up using it.
The class is pretty easy as long as you turn in all assignments that are not hard but test are difficult because of her lectures. The professor always seems to have an attitude and is very rude. Sitting through her lectures is horrible because they are so boring and she moves may to fast to be able to take good notes !!
This class is pretty easy as long as you pay attention and take thorough notes. The exams weren't too bad, and they were all based on lecture material. There weren't too many assignments either (just a couple of drawings and a few short essays), but make sure to follow the directions clearly.
The only good thing about her class was that she curved all of the exams, other than that every lecture was extremely boring and the exams always had some weird nuances to them that just wouldn't make sense. If you have no other choice to take her (like I did) you'll be fine as long as you kind of pay attention in each lecture.
Gretchen Potts is the art teacher of all time. She takes the time to talk to students individually and help them out with whatever they are working on. In fact, she is doing this right now as I am writing this review. 3D design is one of the most fun classes I've taken at CSUF. Also, I love the music that she's playing in class right now. Tee hee!
Art projects were fun! I enjoyed do the assignments the only thing is that they are time consuming so make sure you put time aside for these.
Classes were extremely boring. Professor was so disrespectful. Avoid.
The professor is not welcoming. Be prepared to like art or she will take it personally. And even if you are interested, she will not care. Please consider a different professor.
She was an okay professor. Her lectures were boring. The exams were curved all the time even the final exam.
The main problem I had with her was tests. She would give a guide with pictures of art and said she would only test us on those, but then on actual tests she asked about stuff that wasn't on the study guide. Luckily she curves tests like crazy. Try to write down as much of what she says as you can bc test questions can be on random little details.
Chill, as long as you watch the lectures you'll pass. Responds to emails quickly and is very helpful.
Lecture heavy, take notes since she doesn't post any slides. Mostly memorization and retention of the artwork. Offers extra credit on tests. In-person turn-in assignments. The textbook is online and it helps a lot.
i'm so sorry but honestly horrible experience…. for a GE she excepts way too much… wouldn't taken again, i have spent 80% of my study time just on her assignments.
I'm sorry this class is literally horrid. She gives assignments with unclear directions and does not later clarify what she means. Quite literally my most strenuous class right now and it's a GE.
TAKE HER FOR AN EASY GE. Just do the work. Get ahead too.
Mid professor. Her lectures are ok and understandable. But, she is disrespectful when it comes to students "not following directions" since her instructions on her assignments are vague. She once accused a student with AI even though a student uses their own brain to write their own. Not a welcoming professor and pushes way too hard for a GE.
Pay attention in lectures and take notes. She goes through the lectures very fast. Has a good sense of humor too. She does curve tests like crazy which is good. You dont really need the book unless you want to get more info on something that'll be on the test that she didnt cover. Other than that it was a good class
Obviously at the end was a hard time for the professor due to things going on personally to them but they were at least understanding or understood about what's needed to be tested and other ways to learn the subjects, beside just lecture based. Exams are slower if based on imagery base subjects and possibly the most difficult for this class.
Easy class, but take good notes. Tests are always curved, and extra credit points are on exams. Did 3 hw assignments for the whole semester
The class is fairly straightforward if you stay engaged. Lectures can be dry, but take notes diligently as exam content comes directly from them. Unstuck ai helped me prep efficiently. Overall, a manageable course.
Not the best. Professor was rude when responding to my emails
Currently taking, professor has an extremely rude attitude and treats students with the expectation that they will act poorly without any previous behavior indicating that they will do so. I am an adult who pays to attend this school and expect to be treated with decent respect, rather than be spoken to like a misbehaving kid.
Professor Potts was a good professor. From the first day of class, she made it clear of what is expected. If you are the type to slack off and not take the class seriously, you won't pass. You need to take notes because she does not provide slides after class. Overall easy class if you study and memorize the art.
Easy A, just show up to the lectures and take good notes. Tests were easy enough and based on lectures only.
SUPER lecture heavy, you MUST attend in order to do good on exams because it's all there. Doesn't assign homework but doesn't post a lot of info of the images discussed unless for study guide. LOTS of studying for images so take good notes! + flashcards. However, you can tell she cares about students and gives good feedback on in-class assignments.
All she does is lecture and talk at you for 75 minutes with no slides and only pictures of the art pieces. and then tells you to make flashcards of what she said and memorize it. When she assigns homework, which is not often, it doesn't pertain to any of the material. No ways to apply the material to actually learn it.
Potts was amazing. If you put in the effort, she will meet you half way. She went over every flash card I made and told me what to add. She is very flexible with due dates, and will even let you take exams a week later with her if you have scheduling issues. Overall, very kind and cares about students. But, very lecture heavy, can't miss class.
Just go to class it's lecture heavy, she's very clear about what's on the final and each test for that matter, AND CURVES IT, always extra credit points on every test.
She's a great instructor and wants to see you pass, however it felt like she was in a bad mood for the majority of the semester and was quite rude to myself and some of the other students. Aside from that, she's quite clear on what she's looking for and if you're able to type well, you'll do fine. I wouldn't take her again though.
