This class is not very hard to do well in, it is easy to understand her points that she is making, and she is willing to go over outlines of papers, tests or any other questions one may have.

Gretchen is amazing. Probablly the only teacher that would have given me any interest in English. Shes cute but a tough marker. Dont let the good looks fool you. If you get the option do a presentation because we all did better than anyone did on an essay. HOT!!!!!!!!!

Barnhill is wicked! She's so helpful and will literally bend over backwards to help you get a good grade. She's a tough marker and expects a lot, but her class is worth it.

Probably one of the nicest most cheerful and hilarious people. Tough marker but always willing to help and give extensions. She's awesome.

Best Teacher I have ever had!!!!!! Her classes are fun to attend cause she gets everyone involved, and if you attend her classes I promise you will do really well on the exams, and she is really helpful when it comes to essays.

She is adorable. Very understanding, and helpful. And she is very fair on her exams, she doesn't try to trick you. She also doesn't have favorites. She is always happy and her lectures are anything but boring. She is funny which is a plus. Everyone will love her!

Shes the nicest lady and a good teacher but she is an insanely hard marker, I almost gave up trying to do well. Its a good class but do not expect high grades.

Gretchen is one of my favorite teachers. She really tries to get the students involved. You can tell that she really cares about the success of her students. She is a bit of a hard marker, but if you go to class you will be fine.

I love Barnhill! She is so easy to work with, always willing to talk or give extensions. She gives pop quizzes, many involve nothing more than signing your name, so go to class. Very picky on writing assignments but quiz and presentation marks are easy. Get into one of her classes; you will not regret it.

Very insightful and interesting lectures. Sweet personality, and quite understanding. However, this class is a must attend class,as her lecture topics ALWAYS end up in her tests. Pop quizes and presentations easy. Her standards are pretty high for the essays though.

I actually got an A+ on my paper, so I did not find her marking very difficult. She has a very motherly personality and makes discussions interesting. She encourages all of her students to visit her office and offers wonderful advice. I took 2100 and 2200 with her now and I've really enjoyed her as a prof. You MUST go to the classes so you can get the super-easy quiz marks, and read the material or she'll get really mad, lol. The test are straight from her lectures and aren't that easy...so study! She marks tough on the essays, but she's willing to help you improve them.

Gretchen is an amazing professor. She is extremely helpful and genuinely caring. Lectures are very insightful, she is funny too. She encourages you to go and see her about your papers, you will usually get a better mark if you do.

I also took English 2300 and 2450 with Gretchen. I hated university english before her classes and almost switched to an english major after one class. She is brilliant, enthusiastic and very dedicated. Best university prof I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Paper marking is tough but fair. Quizzes are easy if you read the book. TAKE HER CLASS!

Gretchen is a really great prof. I would recommend taking one of her classes. She is very helpful and wants the best for her students. Her lectures were fairly interesting but she is a very tough marker!!! If you want to do well on her exams you MUST attend class.

Very hard marker indeed, i dropped this class because she said that a C+ is good, no it's not. Also, I found her to be very lenient during group discussion, especially for students who go off topic or who take over the class discusion by talking about something else rather than the book, she should really control that, it's annoying.

Incredibly amiable and helpful, but lectures were mostly unmoderated opiniative discussion and her having to zip through notes between said discussion. She has easy participation marks for groupwork, but she can be ruthless on grading papers and has the HIGHEST grade standard (for an A, 94+) I have ever seen for an English class.

Nice lady, not a bad prof. Her ridiculous grading scheme makes it impossible to do well. Since when is 90% on a paper considered an A-?

I found her to be very nice and she likes to give out participation marks. If you are an english major I would recommend taking her class because she knows what she is talking about and she is a hard marker with her essays. This is good if you need to write a lot of them. Don't recommend if you want an easy class.

Gretchen is an incredible prof. She is someone who is more than willing to help you, if you put the effort in. With essays she is a TOUGH marker. Loves analysis of the text, the more analysis you do in your essays the better it is. Exams are easy if you come to class - take copious lecture notes. She really reignited my passion for English.

In a word, AWESOME! Substantive lectures, thought-provoking content. Expects you to think. Gets everyone involved.

She was awesome! Gretchen was a very fair marker, though she was tough. If you read her 'Tips for Essay Writing' you'll do fine, that was how I obtained my first A on a paper for University. Tests are mostly based on her lectures so do attend class and read the material, she expects you to participate in class discussion. She's very sweet.

I love Gretchen! This is the second class I have taken from her and it's awesome. She's super helpful and willing to help you out if you ask ahead of the day something is due. She's a great person, too, not just a good prof. Her marking is tough, but fair - if you do the work, you get the grade.

Gretchen is an amazing prof. Quite silly and weird at times but she definetly explains her material well and she makes the class love the material we are covering.

I took every possible english class I could from her, and would still if she were to come back. To me, she is the epitomy of what a professor at University should be and I am so incredibly grateful to have been taught by this wonderful lady.

After I took 1900 with her I switched to an English major. She is such a wonderful teacher and I hate it when I have to miss a class. Happy Friday Quizzes=easy marks and tests are easy if you go to class and read the material. For essays make sure you have a clear thesis and you analyze not repeat the story and it's easy! So funny, and fun, great!

Just an amazing professor!! I used to hate English, and thanks to her it is one of my favourite courses. Tests can be hard, but you should be ok if you take good notes in lectures. Everything on the test is straight from one lecture or another. Wonderful stories! Absolutely loved her. Made my day every day I had a class with her. Love you Gretchen!

Gretchen was a FANTASTIC professor! I fully enjoyed every lecture. She was always to happy and definitely cared about her students enough to make the effort to learn each of our names. I appreciated that. Work load wasn't too bad. Didn't even read Frankenstein and got 16.5/20 on the midterm. Fantastic professor! I will take more classes from her!

Barnhill takes scholarly work seriously...She can be lol, but don't kid yourself, she expects students to work at the university level. Do the work, approach the course like an adult (instead of a high-school student), and you won't find a better prof.

Its important to read the assigned pages and take notes in class. She doesnt post power point pres. or anything like that at all so its easy to think you can just catch up but really you need to actually understand the material.

If you are just taking classes because you think you deserve a University education..she is the wrong prof for you..Prof. Barnhill expects students to work, learn, and excel. Not everyone should be attending university..if you think she expects too much..drop out and go to trade school

I'm not sure why people don't like her; she is a wonderful woman, very knowledgeable, and will go out of her way to help you - if you ask. Yes, she's a hard marker, but English profs generally are. Attend class, take good notes, and put some effort into editing your essays, and there is no reason not to get an A with her. Wonderful lady!

She is an amazing woman! Helpful, and so much fun to listen to. Really encourages class discussions and interaction. Make sure to do the readings, take good notes, and attend class. Sometimes she'll do pop quizzes but they're not hard at all. I would definitely take another class with her again.

I found this prof very moody. If she is having a good day then she is wonderful. I learned a lot from this class but I think she treats students with disrespect. I read so many great comments about her but I must have caught her on a bad semester.Still a very helpful class!!

Absolutely phenomenal professor. If you actually do your best in this class you should be able to reach AT LEAST low 80s. She makes grammar interesting which is otherwise impossible!! It's one of those classes you wish didn't have to end at the end of the semester. You're INSANE not to take this class with her...INSANE!!!

Amazing Prof! I hated English until I took it with Gretchen. She is truly the greatest prof I think I will ever have in University. If you attend class, you will do fine! A bit of a hard marker on essays/assignments, but an amazing prof!! Take this class if you can!!

She is awesome!! Just make sure you take lots of notes, i suggest using a laptop for notes in her class. Midterm was super easy if you had good notes. Marks things very fair. Excited about what she talks about, funny and interesting and really nice! Also very helpful and understanding.

Relatively easy marker, kept class discussions interesting. Make sure you do the readings and participate in class. Visit her prior to writing your essay and you should get a good grade.

I loved her! She is like a little Grandma that is very helpful when you go to her outside of class. She marks fairly hard, but if you show to class and take good notes you'll do well.

She's great! Those below that didn't like her were probably the ones who didn't participate or show up. She is very clear on what she wants, very personable and approachable. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will throw away free marks in her class if you don't show up. Not a work heavy class, just a fair bit of reading. She is very fair!

Absolutely phenominal professor, she was incredibly kind after I had a death in the family giving me an extension on an essay and tons of help. Go to class, take notes ask for help/clarification if needed. A bit of a hard marker, but you will improve because of it. Not an esay A but a great class, although our eng1900 did a lot of poetry.

the best english teacher you'll find. very funny and helps you LEARN! take very good notes and dont miss a single class. exams can be tricky because the most obvious and east questions are only worth .25 and all the harder questions are worth 1-3 marks.

This is the second class I took from Gretchen. And she's AWESOME! Her personal stories and humour make the class nice to attend. There's a bit of reading, but her assignments aren't impossible. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she does do random quizzes for participation marks. She's a super sweet lady who actually enjoys talking with her students

Awesome prof, super funny! Made this Eng1900 class fun to go to. Available outside of class. I would absolutely take another class from her and recommend her. Most of her pop-quizzes are taking attendance..if you're there, you get 100% on the "quiz" :)

Makes class enjoyable with her personal stories. A bit scatterbrained at times, but will always go back and explain further if you are confused. Always show up for class,take good notes, her tests are hard, and she has really high expectations for writing (even in a first year class). Don't take her class if you are looking for an easy A.

Funny, engaging, and quirky. She truly cares about her students and takes the time to ensure that everyone is understanding the material. She has very realistic expectations of her class and marks moderately-hard on essays. As for any assignments, all you have to do is show that you have put in some though and effort and it`s an instant A.

Gretchen Scott is the best professor I've ever had. Her class was engaging and thought provoking, and she always encouraged individual thought. No answer is wrong if you can back it up. She is one of the most kind-hearted, funny people I know. She is sarcastic and enjoyable, not at all holier-than-thou like a lot of (usually English) profs can be.

Gretchen is one of the best profs at the school. Made a boring subject actually interesting! Must attend classes as the tests are based on class notes which she tells you on your first day of class. Wouldn't take an English class with anyone else!

Gretchen is a fantastic prof, very helpful and entertaining, even on the potentially boring/unpleasant topics (poetry!) Much of the midterm and final are based on lectures so attendance is necessary, and she gives marks for participation. Overall an enjoyable class with an enjoyable prof. Definitely recommend Dr. Scott.

Professor Scott was a wonderful teacher and was very clear in what she wanted from us. As a first year course this was extremely helpful and she taught a lot about how to write an essay that used MLA format and as a highschool student who had never written using it, it was a lifesaver. I would totally take one of her classes again :)

Professor Scott was one of the best professors I ever had. I am a science major and had to take english and she made it easy. Make sure you attend class and take notes and you will do fantastic on tests.

Scottt is an amazing teacher and keeps the class light and fun. You can always feel free to talk to her after class and in her office hours. Amazing. I highly recommend her too all students.

Prof Scott was certainly the best professor I've ever had. Also, just an overall great person. Writing/English classes are typically boring.. not with her though. I normally hesitate to ask questions but not so much in her class. I feel like I am a better person after being her student for a semester. UofL will miss you Professor Scott!

this professor was one of the best teachers I've ever had in my school life. she was very helpful, funny and personable. she is very clear with her class. i'm not very good at essay writing but she was not too harsh with criticism and she helped me out a lot. highly recommend

I actually really loved this class. She tried to scare everyone away on the first day, but after that, she was a sweetheart. She enjoys chatting with students after class and her tests are very fair! No surprises. Furthermore, although she claimed the class did poorly on the paper, but I got an A, so maybe mine was good. Either way, very clear!

Scott is amazing. She is funny and likes to tell stories about her life. Her classes are enjoyable and she is willing to get to know everyone. I would take a class with her again.

Awesome English teacher, and I am a bio major. Very funny, tells hilarious stories, took over for Eng 1900 class when the previous prof became ill. She loves participation from her student and does not have a tough criteria. She's Awesome.

Amazing Prof, she really cares for her students. I had family issues going on and she worked with me on them. & genuinely cared about me and my mental health. I would take her class every semester if I could.

She was amazing, and she really cared about students and their lives. She clearly knew what it was like to be a student. Politics in the States was very applicable to course,so she linked class discussions on it, which I really liked. "Learning should be fun!" was her motto, and it really shone through her classes. I would definitely take her again

Professor Scott is easily one of the best profs at this school. Everything was fairly marked and she truly cares about her students.
