If you get the chance to take any classes with Dr. Van De Walle, DO IT> She's tough, but GOOD> If you really want to learn something, take a class with her. She knows what she's talking about and is a great teacher!
She's cool,very straight to the point, answers questions quite clearly. I personally didnt have to use the book that much,only for finals, all u need are the slides online that u can print out and your notes. As long as u do ur part, u'll get an A.
With Prof.Van De Walle you not only get the satisfaction of a good grade (as long as you do your part) but also you leave with the feeling of having learned quite a bit of information. If you ever get a chance to take a class with Van De Walle, do it.
Prof. Van de Wall is one of the best professors that i ever had in all of my years of schooling. you learn alot from ther course once you apply yourself she gives pop quizzes to check attendance.
She has clear notes, available on blackboard. She has a great sense of humor, makes the class fun. She is very helpful and very willing to know how she can make your learning experience even better. She's awesome!
Very challenging class in terms of the amt. of info one has to memorize. She gives pop quizzes so you can't miss class, besides is highly not recommended.

she's got major attitude when it comes 2 advising students. she actually banned me from e-mailing her about some courses that i have 2 take next semester.
Really took the time to work with me as I transitioned to New Jersey from Florida. Was able to work out a graduation plan over the phone and email it to me and my advising dean.. A true professional that brings her insight to advising... Thanks!
Warning! terrible professional. Bad attitude, appears to be extremely vindictive, arrogant, and a hot head. I could not communicate with this individual without hearing her huff an puff like she didn't want to be bothered. Horrible experience!
I agree with last student. This lady has no business as an advisor or anything else. She is unstable and mean-spirited.
Good class. Lots of reading, so keep up. She's fair with grading. She uses powerpoint as the main teaching tool (besides the textbook). She encourages class discussions.

she teaches straight from powerpoint slides and the test are pretty decent. BUT she has MAJOR attitude problem. she is rude and inconsiderate and really mean. she tries too hard to be a 'cool' teacher. shes the worst. i feel bad for her TAs shes wayyyyyy to demanding.
She is very good at lectures and exams are fair. However, she has mood fluctuations and makes some unfortunate comments that make the audience uneasy to say the least. It's a pity because most of the time she tries hard to be nice. Her recitation classes are a total waste of time.

Easy Class. If you only study the slides like most people you'll get atleast a C on every exam. If you read the corresponding chapters in the book then you're guaranteed a B or better. Go to class, pay attention, and you won't have to study hard for exams. I didn't even study for the final and I got a B+ overall. She can be a little moody though.
Overall, i would say she is a great teacher! her exams are very straightforward, just make sure u read teh textbook AND study her notes. She even gives three extra credit ques on each exam and curves it ( usually by 5 pts) depending on the class average. She also drops the lowest exam GRADE. OMG she is awesome. I got an A in her class...She is the type of person who does not take any b.s. So you have to study, go to class, print the power points, go to the workshops and you will do well. Her exams are easy, straightforward from class and power points. Overall easy A

She is a great professor. She is really helpful and knowledgeable. I learned a lot from taking her class. Attendance is not counted but it really does help to attend class, especially for tests. The only thing she really can't tolerate is when students are talking while she is lecturing. Overall, a great professor.

The class wasn't hard, but she has an ATTITUDE PROBLEM. Not an approachable prof. She gave pop quizzes, dropped the lowest one. 2 Exams and one final. Lowest exam (not including the final) gets dropped.
Good professor. Not very approachable. If you study the chapters and slides, you should do well. Dropped the lowest of two midterms. Attendance was not mandatory, but plenty of pop quizzes!
She's a great instructor, very clear, and will answer questions ensuring everyone understands the material. She does not tolerate any type of disruption such as talking in class. As an Adviser she may come off as though shes not helpful, but I found that you have to ask the right questions. She may seem intimidating, but she's approachable.
This professor is very unorganized, and seems to like taking large amounts of points off of essential assignments for very little reason. While the information of this class is not the hardest I have ever seen she is very mean, and will not help you in any way at all.
Rude and unorganized. A major attitude problem. She reads directly off the powerpoint. If you can avoid taking any class with this professor do it. I did good in the class because I study. This professor should not be around students.
Great Psych Professor. Amazing and clear power points which she posts. She assigns four exams and drops the lowest grade. She also posts review questions before the exam to help you out. Very interesting and makes it easy to learn!
Hard to approach outside of the classroom. Be sure to use the power points to your advantage, has useful information. But you should buy the book, she doesn't go over the modules in detail. Requires a clicker for the class, she uses it to calculate points towards your participation. Has a bit of an attitude and makes that class feel never ending.
Class is a little hard but well educated(from Cornell)and knows a lot and incredibly passionate about the subject she teaches. Go to her class and you will learn a great deal. A plus professor !!

Prof. Van De Valle attempts her best to make sure all her students pass. Gives extra credit, tons of online assignments, and curves the test based on the class average. However, the exams are difficult, and she seems to be very unapproachable. Take at your own risk!

This professor is so annoying. she makes us do group discussions like every week, which i absolutely hate. Like i honestly do not care to talk to other students in class. i would prefer to do my own work. She also gives us so many small unnecessary assignments to complete. Its so ridiculous, this class makes me feel like i'm in middle school

Wonderful Professor. Her exams are decent if you just stick around for her lectures. Using clickers gives you an instant grade for exams. Take her fame she makes your life super simple while being entertaining. Shes also very nice and understanding. Great Professor overall.

Dr. Gretchen was such an amazing Psych Professor!! She taught the lessons very well and was always straight forward. I would recommend to always be prepared for class by reading the chapters and taking notes. The tests are easy if you study your textbook and go over the slides she put up.
Go to class for clicker points (important). Shes boring & can be rude in class. If shes in a bad mood, shell take it out on the class. Lectures dont help much. Read the textbook!! Exams are tough because all the answer choices are the same. Not very kind at office hours. Wouldnt take her again, personally. Not crazy complicated overall tho
She is the absolute WORST prof I've ever had. Although I received an A it was NOT because she actually taught the material, but because I read and studied from the textbook. The information in her lectures doesn't help at all, and if you don't read the textbook you won't pass. It's NOT an easy class. She'll try to sabotage your grade too!
Dr. Van De Walle is one of the best professors I ever had. She's tough and strict, but she's highly interested in making sure students learn the material. So if you are in college to learn, absolutely take her class. She explains really well and welcomes questions. I highly recommend her.
Her exams are poorly written but putting that to the side she is an amazing professor. Her lectures are amazing and she is so passionate about psychology that she will make you like it too.
Shes an amazing professor and cares about her students, however, she makes you really think twice about everything, you think you know the answers think again. Attendance and clicker questions are 30% of the grade, so if you miss a few classes and dont get every clicker question right forget an A. But shes funny and exams arent easy!
Participation does matter in this course, need a clicker. Straight to the point, keeps lecture intriguing. Can have an attitude, but doesn't get too bad. Interesting course for sure, I would recommend her. Cares a lot about students learning and understanding concepts. Accessible after class.
I am generally a straight A student but I took Dr. Van De Walle's class during covid19 and she gave an insane amount of assignments for the time given to complete them. While she will respond to emails or messages (most of the time), she is not understanding or caring towards her students and has a bit of an attitude when asked questions.
I enjoyed having this professor. She makes it clear how you are going to be graded and the assignments that are going to be assigned each week. Each week, there is a term quiz which can take as many times as you want, a inquizitive quiz which requires you to think critically, a discussion post and a response. Be sure to turn things in on time.
Being apart of Professor Gretchen Van De Walle Psych101 class was a pleasure. There was a moderate amount of work, she released them early and if one has or develops good time management, there should be no issue with passing the class. Grading can get a little harsh because for discussion posts but the rubric and instructions should help.
Shes very nice and accessible outside of class, but she gives A LOT of work. She has 3 midterms and a final exam at the end of the semester.. Overall shes good but she just gives a lot of work compared to the other psych professors.

By far, Van de Walle's class is complex. No matter how hard you study you won't get a good grade, even tho she says It NoT tHAt HaRD tO GeT a GoOD GrADe In mY ClASs. Her exams are Situational based meaning that you have to know what terms fit best with each situation she presents in the exam. She gives three exams and drops the lowest one.
I highly recommend taking any class with this professor, as my first lecture type class she set a high bar for any class I take next. The assignments are not hard and are broken into three categories such as discussion post, term quizzes, and web-based questions. Most importantly the tests, There are three mid terms and one final test.
She has a great teaching method but studying the PowerPoints wont prepare you for the exam. her exams are more of applying the terms rather than knowing the definitions so it can be very tricky. as for weekly assignments: term quizzes, inquizitive, discussions boards. Theres also 3 exams (1 gets dropped), final (which you have to take)
the professor can be sassy or rude but knows what shes teaching. the assignments seem like its a lot but its also easy. keep in mind that discussion boards get grades by rubric, so dont bs on it. a few points can impact our overall grade. Stay on top of inquiztives/terms quizzes too!
her tests are very tricky but besides that, there are weekly assignments which is super easy. So even if you fail on her exams and do good on assignments youll pass. Stay on top tho. She also does extra credit randomly. (Mainly after exam day). Its 1 point. But all those points be added to your final grade. She made it 3% of our grade.

In terms of professor, she is decent. I like the way she teaches but her PowerPoints wont really help you prepare for the exams, you need to read the textbook. however even if you dont do well on the exams, put in the widget in the assignments. Youll def get a passing grade. She also takes attendance as extra credit from time to time.

She makes sure that she gives you the information you need to be successful with the course, it is just a matter of how dedicated a student is to the class. This professor definitely gives out work, and everything counts for something. At the beginning of the semester she said attendance did not matter but was annoyed when half the lecture was missing.

I love professor Van De Walle. She loves what she teaches and has helped me grasp psych material that I struggled with understanding before. There are short weekly assignments that aren't too difficult. If you pay attention during the lecture, take notes, and do your homework you are sure to pass.

If you consider yourself hardworking whatsoever and you want your work to be graded fairly, then avoid taking van de walle for any course. She is completely incompetent.

I had a highly disappointing experience with Dr. Van de walle during my time at Rutgers. Her approach to teaching was disheartening, as she openly expressed her disdain for the profession and for students.
She is very very smart but also condescending and manipulative. She should use her intelligence for good instead of poking fun of students. Either ask about this professor before taking or google her and see if her principles align with yours.
While this class isn't difficult, as other people said, she is very condescending and rude to her students as if she is better than them. For class itself, just read the textbook chapters from the homework and study them over, as well as go to class and do your participation, its relatively easy. Easy-ish class besides her attitude.
Professor Van de Walle's class isn't difficult, if you complete all of the work and do decent on her midterms and final you should end with a good grade. Yet, she pin points and calls out students in huge lecture halls and humiliates them, attendance isn't mandatory but she does participation points during class that effect your overall grade.
Great professor. InQuizitives are very helpful. She only calls you out if you're conversing loud enough for her to hear. If you study the vocab in the textbook, you should be fine for the exams. She also curves all the exams even the final which is great. If you're quiet in class and do the assignments on time, you'll be fine. Highly recommend.
I would not recommend her at all. She talks down to students and is genuinely unpleasant. It seems like she writes all the positive reviews herself. For instance, a recent positive review stated, 'She only calls you out if you're conversing loud enough.' Seriously, what college student uses the word 'conversing' in a review about a professor?
VERY EASY CLASS! Professor Van De Walle brings lots of energy into her lectures. Attendance is on an app where you answer MC questions throughout her lectures so don't skip class. The hw is a little annoying, but not bad (it helps with studying for exams). There's 3 exams + 1 final (not cumulative) you also get to drop your lowest exam grade.
Loved this class and was engaging even though there were ~180 students. She's very accessible outside of class for any support or questions. I liked the inquisitive as homework bc you're playing games to get a grade and it actually helped reinforce the material.
Embarrasses students during lecture for no reason. She was the dean of undergraduate education and was demoted because she is tenured. She should have been fired.
It's surprising, given that she is a psychology professor, someone whose profession is grounded in understanding human behavior and emotions, that she shows such little empathy in her interactions with students. A professor in her position should know exactly how much words and attitudes can affect others. An incredibly unkind human being.

She uses point solutions and she'll base your participation and attendance based on if you get questions right. To make sure you're in class she will give the answer to some of them and close it after 2 seconds. Don't recommend her, find a different professor.
Van De WALLE is a great teacher, as long as you do your hw on inquisitive, study her PowerPoint lectures (not boring but fun), and the textbook chapters, you should be fine. Half of the ppl giving bad ratings must be ppl she's called out for disrupting class. I have spoken once in her class and still earned a decent grade. I recommend taking her.

This is an easy class if you study all the inquizitive (where you do your homework) material and show up to class. She is a bit scary to talk to face to face, but questions during class time are encouraged. Presentations are put together and cohesive. I did learn a lot which is the best part, so if you want to learn psych this is a good teacher.

The class was incredibly interesting, and she is a good professor, but I won't pretend I don't see why people don't enjoy her class or where they're coming from. She often has an attitude for no apparent reason. The class is easy, but if you take her, bring your questions or concerns to the TA.

She openly expressed her political opinions during class and implied that agreeing with her views was necessary to pass. Causes quite a bit of stress I wouldn't deal with that again. You can tell she feels bad for something she did and wasn't fired for it. She shared a copy of her resignation as dean with the class. I honestly think she should have been fired. You sharing your resignation with the class just shows why you should be fired.

I am disappointed in Rutgers; Grerchan Vandewalle is a bully. Did not learn a thing. She was fired as dean; her resignation is all over the internet, but the college could not remove her permanently since she's tenured, so they just have her teaching and doing research. FIRE HER

Gretchen has just written another positive review. The 5-star review right before this one she wrote. She uses the word bozos in class regularly and just wrote it in a review. Gretchen asks students to write positive reviews, but instead, they write negative reviews. Hopefully, she'll be fired next time instead of being demoted.

Very disappointing professor. Dr. Van de walle showed an unwarranted sense of superiority, treating others as if they were beneath her. She was removed as dean after a serious incident that led the university to request her resignation.
Dr. V said she hates teaching and dealing with students then why teach? I don't get? You were forced to resign as dean of the university so now they have you teaching and doing research because you're tenured. Why not just fire you and get it over with?
Professor Gretchen Van De Walle, when you read these reviews take them as constructive criticism. Learn from them, reflect on how you can grow, and think about how you can apply that feedback to your teaching. She doesn't even deserve 1 star. Giving her 1 star feels too generous.

I'm in her 101 class and she is a nightmare.
Reads directly off the PowerPoint. If you can avoid taking any class with this professor do it. I'm doing fine in the class because I'm reading on my own and don't ask her any questions. She's not a kind person and should not be around students.
This prof asked the class if anyone knows why ratemyprofessor keeps deleting her reviews she'll give them extra credit. Probably because that's fraud Gretchen they want students writing the reviews not professors. The RU newark campus is talking about what a joke you are and how you were thrown out of the deans office back to the psych dept.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Wish I knew before taking this class that she used to be the dean, got fired, and now teaches and does research probably because she's tenured. She barely gives instructions and has an attitude.
Everything she does you have to document put it in an email and copy her supervisors. Miserable professor and takes her problems out on the class. The material was not difficult but she's confrontational and will bully you big time.

Quizzes (basically homework unlimited tries to get 100), test (she gives u a study guide just spam it and youll get an A), Rpoints easy to fulfill and participation ( just show up or ask someone to send you the code, but be careful she purposely puts false answers as right and tells only people in class just as a measure.)
She tries to sabotage your grade.
She's asking students to write reviews for her for extra credit. If you see a 5 star review it was likely written by the professor herself.
Vandewalle makes the class stressful for no reason. I can't believe she was forced to resign as dean and now they have her teaching only because she has tenure.
people overreact, the class is such an easy a, study for 4/5 hrs the day b4 the test by reading the textbook and making chatgpt study guides, hw is weekly+easy+can be done in advance (takes 10-15 mins per week), the only annoying thing is the attendance policy so u cant skip too much, but she's nice &passionate about teaching and welcomes questions
Former Van De Walle TA here. The negative reviews are right on the money. She went on sabbatical when she was fired as Dean but in reality it was a suspension and everyone knew it. She absolutely writes her 5 star reviews. Her class is always open and no one wants to take it. Rutgers just doesn't know what to do with her.

If she is the only professor teaching the subject I do not recommend taking it. You will regret it. The class is having the same issues with her as people did 15 years ago she hasn't changed and she asks us to write reviews for her online.
She was engaging in class, connected the material to real issues. Learned a lot. She is very smart with superstar potential, but! She treats students and staff VERY poorly. She can be charming & will do anything to salvage her reputation other than change her own behavior. You can tell she is hurting. Gretchen, please listen to all this feedback.
She's incredibly kind, funny, and approachable. Took her for 101 and now for developmental psych—her lectures are always insightful and engaging. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but respect is key. If you show her respect, she'll definitely return it. A great professor and person in general!

Don't ever do anything privately with this professor you need witnesses for anything and everything with her. She is sneaky and notorious for playing games. Anything that she does or says that is not in line with university policy document it in an email immediately and send it to all supervisors you don't have to copy van de walle
The absolute worst professor at Rutgers. Just an FYI she writes all her positive reviews. Once you meet her in person and see her live in class you will realize no sane person would ever write a positive review for her.

She's not respected by anyone which says a lot. Something major happened on or around August/September 2015 that led to the firing of Dr. Gretchen Van Walle as Dean of the university. She was forced to resign. We need to find out what happened.
My advisor told me that other advisors in the dean's building threw a party when she was fired as dean and removed from the building. Too bad she has tenure and can still teach.
what is everyone on she's rlly not bad at all. Yes, she has a bit of an attitude but for the most part she's chill. The class is pretty easy and she's very clear about her expectations. There's just weakly hw, and the tests are all based on the inquizitives and also curved AND the lowest is dropped. So if you're not doing well maybe try harder.

Don't be embarrassed about getting fired as Dean and having to resign. That sabbatical was really a suspension. Gretchen, just tell us the truth. Don't hide anything because we will find out and when we do everyone will know.

The entire university is currently talking about this professor. It's truly disappointing to see someone at engaging in such childish behavior. It's time to resign and put an end to this. You've failed in your role as a professor.
Professor likes to play mind games. not straightforward. And if you're a certain gender you get treated differently.
She only loosely teaches the material; if you want an A, you have to really study with the textbook. Will take any excuse for absence as long as you email before! Most of the time, she will respect you if you respect her, so try not to be on your phone or talk loudly. She's silly but clearly bored with her own material. Loves questions/interest!
I learned a lot. As long as you do the reading and show up to class, you'll be fine. I would take her again.

Gretchen Van De Walle is the worst rated professor at Rutgers. STAY FAR AWAY
Gretchen Van de walle was fired as Dean and tried to sue the university to get her job back, but the university stood by its decision. She has been at Rutgers for over 20 years, but now she's just a professor, while someone who started a few years ago is now Vice Chancellor.
Great professor, pay attention to the slides and take notes, point solution how you get credit for the day, so always log in to that and respond. Overall easy class if you study and pay attention during lectures. She drops your lowest test. She does not allow talking during the lecture. If you are talking, you will be asked to leave.
One of the worst professors at Rutgers. She writes her own positive reviews and pressures students to do the same. She might have done well in acting; she certainly knows how to put on a show, but Rutgers saw through it and fired her as dean.
Calls herself litigious in class to try and scare students don't fall for it. She's a joke not respected by anyone.
She's not a good professor and has a bad attitude toward everyone, including other professors, TAs, and students. Now I see why her class is always open.
As a former student of van de walle and now doing my PHD and hearing about the Gretchen van de walle scandal. She was for sure disciplined in 2015. She was the dean and all of a sudden she was removed as dean, she was suspended but the university said sabbatical and she resigned as dean immediately. No one does that.
What kind of professor says I wake up and read my ratemyprofessor reviews. Well this professor did. Anyone reading these reviews as soon as they wake up in the morning would have a terrible day.

The class was boring, and the professor was annoying. She was rude, talked down to students, and made things stressful just to feel powerful.

Dr. Van De Walle he/she/they is an inspiration to the entire Rutgers University community. Rutgers is lucky to have them! Do your work and you will do fine give them trouble and you will no doubt fail.

class was the easiest. dropped lowest scores. kinda rude though. could have answered nicely when i asked a question in class. it wasnt a big deal too. otherwise id take her class again because its easy
she is so BIASED AND RUDEEE
This professor was not that bad despite what everyone else says. Just show up to class and do the inquizitvies by the end of the week and you are good. Just try to pay attention during the lectures because the tests are sort of hard if you don't study so make sure you know some stuff before you go in for the tests. Overall not bad.
