Great professor to have if math comes to you easily, however, if you need a little more instruction get ready for tutoring lessons. Material is rushed and not very thoroughly explained. Tip: print out the slides before class to take notes on. Weekly quizzes (20 questions) and homework (30-40 questions) are online.
Her class is very, "I am here to teach, you are here to learn" in the sense that she will rarely help you outside of class and has HORRIBLE office hours. I have asked for help many times and I can only get it during class since she never responds to emails. TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE! It will be much more helpful and be much easier on you, I promise!
Dr. Torres is great as a person but not as a professor. She is very hard to reach outside of class and though her lectures are easy and she will help you to the best of her ability in class, I wouldn't take her class again unless if it was on the same level of difficulty.
Professor Torres is one of the nicest professors here at GCU. However, her teaching is not good and her lectures are boring. You can literally learn everything on MyMathLab. Participation is a major key to passing the class. If you don't show up, you won't pass the class. Overall, an easy A, but I would suggest a different professor.
She is extremely difficult to meet with outside of class. I was very unclear on how to complete some of the assignments, and had a hard time receiving help from her. She is a very nice person but I had a hard time understanding her instructions on some assignments.
She let us do all of our homework in class and also let us do the quizzes in class. We were only there for an hour at most or maybe even less in class. PARTICIPATION COUNTS.
Professor Griselle is a very tough grader. She will give you a rubric and then expect way more from you than what is stated on the rubric. She is very strict on participation and will not give extra points or give you points back in any way. She will not listen to what you have to say about the grade she gave you. Would NOT take this class again!!!
Was not very helpful with the class. Has you write a 1500 word paper FOR MATH CLASS which is worth literally half you grade 435 pts. She did not help out very well, and was not very understanding when asking questions. Was not professional and would come in yoga pants and a shirt.
I love Dr. Torres!! Shes so nice and pretty and I would definitely take this class again. She is not a tough grader as long as you do all the work. and to be honest, my math lab helped a lot on the homework. She was also in the math center all the time in the morning so I don't understand why people are saying she has difficult office hours.
A single large project makes up a large portion of the semester grade, and she completely stopped mentioning it during week 4 and left it alone until week 11, 3 weeks before the due date. If she feels the class isn't paying enough attention, she will spring a pop quiz on the class that you must pass in order to get your participation points.
Can only take quizzes 3 times. Cares about attendance. Goes over projects in class once quickly, but make sure to go and get help because she grades them hard and they are worth a lot of points. Can be sarcastic and rude sometimes but usually if you try and show up to class she is willing to help
She's very nice and you can tell she loves what she does. You do need to show up to class to get participation points (mandatory attendance). If you do need more help, she does offer it (in her office hours and in class). The homework and quizzes aren't that bad, she does help with them in class and show lots of examples, so it's hard to fail.
awesome teacher. cares soo much
Very nice and very helpful. Loved having class with her. Helped me one on one to better understand the material.
Professor Torres-Garcia is a kind person as long as you show up to class and usually goes over tests and homework in class with you. There are 3 projects that have the most pull in the class with the last one being around 44% of your final grade. Tough grader but you can ask for help. Show up to class and ask questions and you should be fine.
Professor Torres Garcia was a pretty good teacher! The course itself was pretty simple, quizzes and homework, as well as a final project at the end. She goes through homework examples in lectures each week and helps us out step by step for the quizzes every other week. Overall, easy class just make sure you show up for participation grades.
Does not put things in until a week or two later which if you are like me, it becomes really stressful waiting for a grade back. Rarely responds back to messages. Would not recommend.
grades project and worksheets difficult and homework doesn't really effect your grade.
This professor was okay, but she would spend a large amount of class lecturing on topics that had nothing to do with math. She would pass attendance and then tell us we could leave, which was more of a nuisance than anything. She sometimes came off as rude when you talked to her, but sometimes she was nice. She would not be my first choice.
She got impatient if we did not understand the topic. Her exceptions for us were confusing. I would of rather taken the course online. She did not teach me anything that I was not able to teach myself.
Very poor ability to explain the content. Got frustrated when certain concepts weren't immediately understood by students. You are going to have to teach yourself the material all semester. HIGHLY recommend taking the class online instead as she takes away the examples on MathXL yet cannot give or explain thorough ones of her own to save her life.
For MAT-150 I think she's an amazing choice. She's very nice and genuinely cares about her students.
Ms. Torres-Garcia is a great professor. She has a clear passion for teaching and wants her students to be successful. This course is easy and she makes it enjoyable. Assignments are simple and the material is very easy to grasp. She makes it worthwhile! Would highly recommend her.
She is a great teacher and you can really tell that she cares. You NEED to show up to class or you really won't pass. She always takes participation and she will go over any questions on the homework and quiz in class. I had this for a 7 am and it was rough but she was a very fair teacher. You can tell she loves what she does.
Torres was one of the hardest professors I had. LOTS of homework and lectures are heavy. Hard to keep up with note-taking. Did not teach the material, only showed example problems and did it at her pace. Do NOT talk during lecture and do not plan to leave early unless you want to get yelled at. Also many projects on excel that do not match material
She was not great. The class was difficult and she was not much help. If you email her, don't expect a reply ever. She rushes through lessons, never gives extra credit and shows no mercy when it comes to late assignments. If you ask her to help you and if you don't understand her the first time, she gets mad. Would not take again.
I love her! Easy subject with a fun, bubbly teacher!
Fine teacher
She doesn't give you any time to learn the lesson or ask her questions about it before a quiz. We had one class before a quiz on a new lesson. She does not think about students.
Professor Torres was a very nice person and wanted to make class enjoyable since most people don't like math. The class was pretty easy for me because I took it in high school, however the kids who haven't taken it struggled with her teaching. You have around 3o hw questions and a quiz every week. You will actually have to study and put in effort
Likes to brag about herself and does not care about her students. Refers you to the TA if we have any questions. Lots of online homework and assignments. She refuses to provide any useful help with the homework and gets mad if you ask to see her during her office hours. I dont recommend her if youre not good at math. Nicknamed Grills. Awful.
Tough Grader. Not very much help in answering questions regarding math problems. Switch out as soon as possible if you would like to pass the class.
The worst math teacher I've ever had. She uses Microsoft excel for everything and only teaches the class on excel and then doesn't let you use it on the quizzes and tests. Kids would ask her to go over questions and she would tell them that they should have learned it when she first said it...
She may come off as sarcastic or rude sometimes when responding but will explain everything to you very clearly if you ask for help. During lectures, if you don't understand something or are unsure just ask and she is ready to explain why. Will give time occasionally in class to work on assignments and explains concepts in detail.
She knows what she wants in her assignments yet is not always clear. If you go to her outside of class she is very nice and sweet but in class questions she can be kinda rude. Everything is done online yet she never lets us out early. She takes participation points very seriously! I got my first B in this class.
THE WORST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! goes through the notes super fast with no time to write everything down. Homework is 40+ questions with multiple parts so it actually it about 60+ questions. makes you sign in for participation points so make sure you show up to class. if i were you, SWITCH OUT ASAP TO A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!!!
Her accent was hard to understand. She also was not helpful at all even when I went to her office hours. One time she said we had to just do one problem for a quiz but made us take the quiz anyway.
I actually enjoyed taking her class. She was always super nice to my class and was always there to help. She even came in on a Saturday before the final so we could go over any questions that we had. If you pay attention and ask for help when needed you will do fine in the class. Students that do not like this professor probably hate math.
ok so she gets mad if you look at someone wrong, she stormed out of class because someone giggled. i have taught myself how to do all thiis math the entire year. it is only fun because i have understood the material. if you have the chance switch out
Nothing good comes from Torres-garcia. She walks out of class when students talk, and her 3 assignments deicide your grade. Of those 3 assignments, no clear instructions are given. Good luck.
She is very strict about being a no tech class unless we are working in excel, which she doesnt let us use for the quiz. She is unclear about what she wants for the 3 assignments that determine your entire grade. Homework and quizzes only make up a small portion of your grade. She frequently does not come to class and storms out if students talk.
Find another teacher. She frequently storms out of class, doesn't allow technology of any form out at her class unless she allows it, and she grades VERY strict. If you need help she seldom helps you and tells you to "figure it out" or "you should have paid attention in class" even if you did take notes and just genuinely don't get understand.
This course was really hard because material is taught very fast and you have to learn it very fast for the quiz. I had to teach myself a lot and have other people from class help. Major assignments are huge portions of your grade yet instructions arent clear and she grades very strict.
SHE WAS GREAT. Our class of 50 felt like a family. She taught well and made it fun and was pretty funny sometimes. Let us have 3 attempts on the weekly quizzes and we had lots of studying in class for the 3 unit tests (No midterms or finals!!) Very accessible, and let some things slide when she also thought they weren't fair. I want her for calc!
Torres is a pretty good teacher. She literally goes over problems from the week's homework as part of the lecture and she makes sure that it is understandable. She can be strict on technology use, but it's for the better good of avoiding distractions. Homework is due by the end of the week along with a quiz which can be retaken up to three times.
Im a straight A student and I got a D in this class. Her grading is very difficult and is not like the other professors for this course. You can do the same thing as your friend in the same course but with a different professor and you will most likely get a way worse grade.
Professor Torres-Garcia is passionate about student success. Whenever she goes through topics in class, she always pauses to ask for questions. She reminds all of us about the resources available to us on campus. You can just tell that she loves what she's doing. I am very happy that I was in her class. If you have the chance to take her class, do.
This professor is terrible and is not helpful at all. The major assignments are graded far too harshly and if you want to even get close to an A you better hope you did every SINGLE thing correct. I am a straight A student and could barely pass this class. She is not helpful and will not answer questions straight up. DO NOT GET HER IF POSSIBLE.
She's one of the nicest professors I've ever had! She makes every class fun & really cares about her students. Definitely take notes in class -- they'll help you a lot with the assignments. She does take participation every day, so go to class. If she offers any review time before tests, I would definitely recommend going. They're very helpful!
She was not a great teacher at all. I basically had to teach myself all of the math and hope for the best. The M.A.'s were difficult because she didn't go over them in depth and then got mad at us when we didn't do well on them. SWITCH OUT IF YOU GET THIS TEACHER!!!!!
I got 100% on the homework and thought I was ready for the quiz. I got a 68% on the quiz and was extremely upset. When I went through the questions I got wrong, I saw that I simply put it in the wrong form or used an incorrect character on the keyboard. When I asked her about it she said, you didn't follow the instructions that the quiz said.
She is the worse Professor Ive ever heard unwilling to help students. Does not understand that there are other factors well in college so when you ask her to be lenient with you she is very unwilling to help. Also one day of a quiz she made students stop using a calculator when they were using it the whole time and she is also very unprofessional.
Terrible at teaching, terrible at explaining the Major Assignments, and will not help you if you have a question. She will just refer you to your notes.
This is by far the worst professor I've had within my 5 years of college experience. She does not listen to students, always has an awful attitude and asking for help won't get you anywhere either, since she'll say she's allowed to help you, even just for HOMEWORK. She makes basical level math more compicated than it needs to be just to ruin grades
she is a terrible teacher due to the fact that she doesn't care about the questions and concerns the teacher has. she will most likely respond to her having you "meet her during her hours in her office". The course material she goes over is not clear, and when it comes time for group work, she gives us 1 min to do a handful f problems. lopes down
She simply does not care about her students' success, her teaching methods were fast-paced and ineffective. We would try to tell her to slow down or explain a problem she would get mad at us. I can recall a time where she brought her sons in and had them teach the class and said "see my kids are in 6th grade and they can do it" which was very rude.
Does not want students to succeed and it is reflected by her teaching styles. Does not give students time to compute information before new information keeps getting relayed to them.
Switch out immediately if you get this professor. She is so rude and gets mad if you have any questions. You are expected to just be a mathematician and if you don't do every detail of your assignment to her liking you will fail. She does not want you to succeed in the class and will look for any way to fail you. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
I would never recommend her to anyone. She failed the majority of my class on an assignment and blamed us for not knowing the material. She doesnt care about her students. She walked out of class half way through and gets mad very easily
Teaches wayyy to fast, made this class way more difficult then it had to be.
Gave us pop quizzes thatd determine if we got participation points for the week. Didnt explain Major Assignments at all!! The class average of 80 people was 60% & didnt provide the necessary formulas, feedback or regrading like other MAT144 profs did. Wont answer questions unless you go to her office hours & came off pretty harsh to most people
She's so great! I was really afraid of her class because of all the bad reviews, but I never experienced anything bad with her. She was always bubbly to class, casual, and pretty funny. You do need to show up to class to gain participation points, and just like any math class, you gotta know your material. Her teaching style is easy to comprehend.
If she calls on you during a zoom call lecture (even if she mispronounces your name) and if you don't immediately answer correctly, she docks all your participation points for the week.
IMPOSSIBLE! she critiques you on every single thing. Im thinking of reporting her because she is rude, and disrespectful to students. In our zoom class she gets mad when people dont ask any questions but gets annoyed and irritated when you do. there are a lot of better professors than this one.
didnt allow us to be helped on major assignment, i spent about 6 hours in the math center on my last major assignment and still earned a b. by far the most unprofessional, rude, and oddly cocky teacher ive ever had. Oh yeah, one time, she walked out in the middle of a lecture to go pick up her kids and bring them to her classroom. she is a joke.
She is, by far, the worst professor I have had in my entire academic career. She is rude, teaches on specific homework problems rather than the big picture, and never gives partial credit. For example, my answer was correct but I entered it as a fraction instead of a decimal; although I provided my work, she refused to give any credit.
During a zoom-proctored quiz (Fall 2020), a fire alarm went off in one of the residence halls and several students in the class (taking the quiz virtually from dorms) had to evacuate. She said that they get no additional time for the quiz and still had to finish before class ended. This is just one example of her unfair and demeaning personality.
Worst professor I've ever had. Wish I could give her a 0. <-----
This teacher was very rude on multiple occasions. She takes off participation points even though there are 60+ students in the class and I was always taking notes. Not easy to communicate with. Would never recommend taking this class.
I got 100% on an exam, and she put 92% (A-) in the gradebook and would not give me my points because she felt that I did not show enough work on my scratch paper, although my scratch paper was very thorough and organized. Other things like this happen a lot. An A- doesn't seem bad, but I deserved an A, especially since at GCU an A- is a 3.7 GPA .
you need to show up to class. she grades super heavy and even if you word something weird you're getting an F. she has reported an unbelievable amount of students for ridiculous reasons. she would kick kids out of zoom if you weren't looking. she went through zoom all year so who knows if it would be different, but still not a fan.
I'm not sure if this is because of Corona or whatever but she expects you to UTILIZE all the space provided on the scratch paper even if the problems can be solved mentally. I got a 97% on an exam (majority of the questions I was able to solve in my head) When I turned in my scratch paper, she dropped my score to a 72% because I didn't show my work
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She is awful and can't teach. She will not help if you ask her to help. Her grading is unreasonable. The entire class hated her. She will kick you out of class if she believes you aren't paying attention (even if you are). The worst professor I have ever had.
Don't be scared if you get her. Honestly, she is not a bad professor, but she is very strict. If she is still continuing through virtual lessons, you must be present during the call and must be not be distracted by anything. She is really good at teaching her class and is willing to help during office hours. You MUST put in the effort.
Her lectures were basically the whole class so it was so easy to get distracted, especially over zoom. Her notes were pretty much give the formula followed by many examples, which is good! I'm a hands on/in class type of person so having this class over zoom the whole semester was hard but she was pretty great overall!
She is absolutely the worst instructor I have ever had. She does not give feedback and will drop a grade from A to F for what seems like a whim. She is never clear in why the drop. I have never filled one of these out before as each has one's own opinion, but this instructor should never be in the teaching field. You will not learn nor succeed.
BEWARE. Would heavily advise choosing a different professor. She is very unprofessional in terms of communication, lacks any form of empathy, rude, and inefficient in her teaching style. For MA-154 it is not a difficult class and with a bit of application will pass, however, does not represent what this school stands for.
I liked that she gave us multiple examples of each problem so we would be prepared for anything on the test. She was very informative although her accent was thick at times. If you attend class, there is no need for the book because she basically goes over everything. I would not take her again just because she came off as demanding at times.
This professor made it feel as though her rules were more important than her student's success. She had rules where just about anything could fail you, including if your roommate made a noise. I had to retake this class over the summer, and my new professor was much more understanding and engaged, and I passed with an A- if that shows anything.
Terrible Professor but a very nice person. She never knew what was going on in class and most people had to attend the ACE center for help because she did not seem very knowledgeable about the subject. She was always doing problems wrong and often students had to tell her and explain to her how to do the subject matter.
Doesn't really teach but when she does, she expects you to already understand the way she does. Heavy on homework.
Probably the worst professor Ive ever come across. Doesnt teach at all, and gives students the wrong impression of what is on the test. She doesnt give students the time of day to ask questions and says theres no time to answer those questions and then goes on to end class 45 minutes early. ABSOLUTE NONSENSE!
Teacher wise, she is your average teacher who gives you formulas and examples. But, she is the center of attention in class. No phones, no laptops, no airpods, and no talking. All exams and homework are online so you either know it or you don't. Not a fun class at all but if you know what you are doing you will pass the course with ease.
Torres-Garcia is low of the low of a math teacher. Starting off she makes a whole ordeal over people wearing earbuds when they pay to go to her class so why does she care? Secondly, her lectures are very vague and a lot of the information ends up being misunderstood and you have to teach yourself the math itself. Her teaching is bottom tier.
She was the worst professor I ever had. I ended up swapping professors half way through the semester. She doesn't allow iPads, phones, or AirPods, so if you take notes on your iPad, you're going to need an actual notebook. If you can, take Chris Pingersdinh, he's literally the best professor!
Griselle is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Her lectures are very vague and she gets annoyed when someone asks a question. The quizzes are very difficult. She makes it clear she doesnt want to teach or work at all. Everyone I knew in that class struggled too. Avoid taking a class from her if you can.
This professor is extremely condescending and rude! She will make you feel bad for not understanding a math problem by saying "that's an easy one my friend" or "we just did this!". If you still don't understand, she gets frustrated and makes you feel worse. She teaches lessons very fast. Don't look away from the board or you'll miss half the lesson
This was by far the worst Professor that I have ever had. I usually am good at math, and very successful in my classes, but this teacher made me hate going to classes. Her lectures made no sense and she had no compassion. Homework problems were mandatory, and the homework was a different material than the test making the tests hard to complete.
Honestly, she is one of the worst teachers. Not only is she rude to her students, but she makes them feel bad when you ask for help. The homework also doesn't help as much with the test and most of the learning is done out of class. Even though her class requires attendance there is no value to her lectures as she rushes through the material.
Doesn't care about her students
She shows no sympathy
To be honest, it is a joke to take this class. I took MAT-150 online, which is part 1 of this math course in the education program, and I never got anything below a 90. Her lessons don't match the activities, and she bases PARTICIPATION on what you got right/wrong from the "exit ticket". Don't get her as a teacher, makes it harder than it is.
This is one of the worst professors I have had in my life, she is a harsh grader. She doesn't teach she just copies off of a paper, anytime you ask her a question she doesn't answer it. She is unreasonable and a hard grader.
Professor Torres-Garcia teaches too quickly. She speeds through the problems as if the class already knows how to do them. The only reason I did so well in this class is because of my prior math knowledge, but most of the students struggled in her class. Having said this, she is a kind woman and is easy to get along with. Just not a good teacher.
I felt like she made it impossible for me to get an A. She grades SO HARD on the projects worth 30% of final grade. She gives NO grace for missing a class/quiz. I got a 0% on a quiz because I had to go out of town last minute even after I met with her and explained the situation. She always lectures and you can not have technology during class.
Horrible. Participation is taken everyday, which is fine, but we do kahoots for it and she gives 30 seconds to answer a 5 minute math problem and you are graded on how many you miss. If there are only 2 questions and you miss 1, you will get an F (50%) for participation that week. She will find any reason to take points from you. Lectures rushed.
Honestly, didn't feel well prepared for tests. Refuses to let students use a graphing calculator even if it is their only one. Would not recommend having her especially if it is your first year.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! She is never in class. Her lectures are long and make no sense. She doesn't explain anything she's never available for help. Never will I ever have this professor again. She sucks at responding. We learn over 30 topics and the exams are only 17 questions. You never know what's going to be on the exam. DON'T GET THIS PROFESSOR!
THIS PROFESSOR IS HORRIBLE! She never shows up to class, lectures make no sense, and does not have any sympathy for her students. She grades so harshly as if her job relies on her failing her students. You could do the project correctly and she will give you a 60%. Not understanding at all and does not care. Had to go to another professor for help.
Dr. Torres-Garcia isn't a bad person, however her teaching style mixed with the difficulty of Aleks makes this class a very hard one to pass. Many people in my class ended up failing the last couple of exams and she always blames us for it. Even with the huge amount of homework Aleks gives she doesn't tell the students what is on the test.
This class was one of the worst classes I've taken. I went into it thinking I'd be fine, as I took notes, payed attention, and honestly tried my hardest, and felt defeated due to nothing in her class making any sense. For one of our exams, the whole class basically failed and we we pretty much at fault in her eyes. Just not a good teacher.
Always tries to take points away from you. The homework can last hours, the program where we do hw Aleks is horrible, we can not go back and review the homework or quiz or test. She does not give a study guide and we can't review any of our assignments so it's hard to pass the tests. Even when you talk to her about your grade she doesn't care.
She makes it basically impossible get a good grade let alone pass this class. This class should not be as hard as it was. She was not understanding and had absolutely no compassion. She does not care about your well being or your grades. It doesn't matter if a whole class fails her exam it's not her fault, its yours. Do not take her class.
This class should not have been as difficult as it was. Professor absent for a majority of the semester, and still made attendance mandatory. Homework on Aleks would take hours to complete and after, it would close making it hard to review material for exams. Exams were heavily weighted, class collectively scored low in several exams.
Don't bother trying to take this, professor. She's absolutely awful, incompassionate, and sets students up to fail. She didn't show up to class for a month and blamed us when we failed exams. I have never failed a class before this one. She doesn't follow SDS accommodations. She is the worst professor you could get. She shouldn't even have a job.
I hate math, first of all. The class assigned a lot of math homework through Alecks and I hated the material. The professor is very smart and has a lot of math history, however we do not connect at all for teaching and it is very hard to pay attention in class. It is nice though that she allows students to complete hw ahead of time.
Don't let these comments scare you! Professor Torres is very knowledgeable and is always willing to help when her students need it. She also encourages questions in class. This class used a new program this year (Aleks) which was very new for a lot of people. However, she provided us with extra reviews before tests and a review before the final.
I do not recommend taking this teacher unless you are very good at math. She teaches very fast and doesn't take the time to expand on the hardest topics. She doesn't let you to work on the homework in class, and since she doesn't teach well I would skip class and losing the participation points to go teach the material to myself through ALEKS.
keep your distance from this professor.
Good person, bad professor. I wouldn't take her class again if I had the option to learn under a different professor. She does not offer extra credit, moves very fast during the lectures, and does not offer breaks during class. It is easier to learn the information yourself on ALEKS than it is her teaching it.
I had a really easy time in this class because I never had to go. If I got my homework and quiz done by the beginning of class on a certain day, she would count that as participation for the week which was really nice. Aleks prepares you really well for the tests and quizzes.
The punishments for mistakes in this class are too harsh. I strongly advise anyone to take this class either online or with another professor. I also learned way more from the Aleks software than from the actual professor themself.
The majority of this class is online. You have to teach yourself everything. Some of the lectures in class are helpful but the majority just take time away from doing the hours of outside homework you need to do. She is not great about sympathizing with her students and understanding that just because she knows what's going on doesn't mean we do.
Not very helpful, and if you are lost try and go to a different professor or the ACE center. Personally, when I told her I wanted to schedule a one on one appointment to review a homework unit and it would take more than the 30 mins she gives for questions, she told me if I didn't ask in class she would not help me now or in the future.
Professor relies heavily on your ability to complete assignments on ALEKS. ALEKS is a horrible method of teaching math in my opinion, and I found it very difficult to complete my work in a timely manner. She makes participation mandatory which is also irritating, offers little to no assistance with work, and moves quickly through the material.
Probably one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Her class is such a waste of time, but you have to go to get participation points. She is a terrible teacher and if you follow along with the pace that she teaches in class you will be behind. It's better to just use Khan academy to learn.
A Mathematical Nightmare: If you have this professor as a teacher switch it as fast as you can. It's as if they've made it their life's mission to turn the simple subject of mathematics into an absolute nightmare for unsuspecting students. In summary, if you enjoy self-torture, TAKE THIS CLASS. However she is a nice person.
No calculators allowed, no headphones, no notes on quizzes and exams. Participation affects grades a lot. Exams are weighted so heavy that homework, quizzes, and other assignments mean nothing pretty much.
Very nice person, but explanations for course content are difficult to follow. Only teaches through sample problems. But will not make you stay the whole time if you have already completed your work.
Might be the worst professor I have had ever. Only learned through aleks. I went to every class and still did not do well. Would write notes and then erase them before anyone could finish writing them down. Does not care about you or your grade.
If you want to pass math switch out of her class ASAP! She has no grace or sympathy for students. Fast lectures and lots of lots of Aleks work! Horrible professor all around!
Heavily reliant on ALEKS, taught very fast and very minimally. Put little to no emphasis on homework or quizzes and majority of the grade depended on the exams. only taught by doing questions on aleks. This honestly should have just been an online class because there was little gain from in person lectures. She doesn't care about her students.
DO NOT (I repeat) DO NOT for the love of all things take this Prof! She is AWFUL at her job and is the least caring/considerate/empathetic prof I have ever taken! Seriously, she is the worst trying to reach her when you need help, very condescending and rude. Save you sanity, save your GPA, take it online!
She is genuinely the worst prof I ever had and I swear there are some who hardly speak English fluently at GCU. I don't understand how she still has a job because I really have not heard a single good thing about her. Everyone in her class actually despises having to take it not because the content is difficult but because shes a bad teacher
Wouldn't recommend. Take this course via Sophia learning and it would be much easier. She seems like a great person, but I don't think she is a great teacher. She's very strict, and I don't feel like she teaches the content. Especially for someone who tested into MAT-144 and got placed higher. To give her credit though she does welcome questions.
Horrible teacher!! If you have her switch asap!!
If you are typically good at math and don't need a lot of assistance this class is not for you. Forces all students to stay in class on certain days if homework is not completed. Participation includes kahoots. If you get problems incorrect on the math problems on kahoot, she will dock you participation points even if you are in class.
This is a horrible professor it really feels like she doesn't want to be here. Any questions or problems you had she did not care and wanted you to figure it out. Wouldn't really help you at all. And I listened to her tell a girl its not her problem that this girls mom is in the hospital please take Garvin Phillips he is 10/10!
If you are perfectly capable of reading and learning at your own pace, take this class online. My grade tanked when she started forcing our attention to her quizzed lectures, foregoing the time I would have spent accomplishing 3x the amount of work on my own. This class is essentially a forced/quizzed math study hall. ALEKS on its own is better.
she is very remorseless and that alone should tell you to not take this class. If you have her go ahead and get a different professor. ASAP!
This professor did not care about her students whatsoever. This is the worst grade I have ever received and was only because of the lesson plan project grades. When someone in my family passed away, she did not give me grace on completing assignments, and I could not make up my participation or the topic quiz.
Long lectures that could be way shorter, she likes wasting a lot of time but she does give a 10 minute gap in her class but that always just makes the class tune out the rest of the lecture. She is all over the place when solving problems and you'll likely be doing most of your learning through aleks. She's also been a 1/5 at her past schools.
The professor has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, you can do well. Use Unstuckstudy, the textbook, and attend study sessions to succeed in this challenging course.
look, honestly she's not bad i liked her, its just those aleks homeworks drove me crazy. attend class. take notes of all the problems she does, it really helps. and ask her questions!!!
I'm surprised a lot of people gave her bad reviews, she was very nice and explained the material nicely. She goes over the exam pretest, which helped as they are VERY similar to actual exam. One thing though, her lectures are pretty long and she uses the full hour and 45 most of the time.
Honestly Dr. Torres-Garcia was a super friendly professor, but became lazy as the semester went on. Very lecture heavy and notes were helpful for the homework. Beware, the midterm and the final exam were NOTHING like the exam prep assigned. She claimed to forward this to the math department, but nothing changed for the final. Would not recommend.
I went to class praying she would not be there every day.
I had an extremely difficullt time with this professor, I struggled in math to begin with, but with this professor I was at the ACE, or math center 3+ times a week, I would spend 10+ hours on homework and 15 on exam prep. She advised me to stay in the class and not drop it because she would help me. LIES
Proffesor Torres-Garcia has good intentions and seems like a very nice women, however she is an awful teacher. She has an accent that makes a lot things hard to understand. No phones, no headphones, no laptops the entire class, she will mark down participation points if so. She teaches very quickly however takes up the entire class each time.
Bad time management, hard to understand, and just not a good class.
The lectures were very long, but she liked to go over the homework/test prep which personally helpful. In my class, we bombed on of the tests and she let us re-take it for a better grade. Unfortunately, the best grade you could get was a 75%, but I appreciated that she let us re-take it. If I had to take another math class, I would take her again.
I can understand why some had bad experiences with Dr. Torres, but I have to say, much of what people have been said on here is stuff I used to complain about other professors when my own diligence is what needed improvement. She uses entire lecture time but gives 10 min break and gives examples and a practice problem for you to ask for help with.
Not a good teacher. Acts like you're 2 years old and will give you a code of conduct if you're just on your phone checking 1 text message. Makes class so difficult and makes you feel lesser than when you don't know the answer right away.
Professor Torres lectures the whole class and treats you like your 5 years old. Very hard to understand because of her accent and she is not good at helping us learn. Do not take, if you miss one class your grade will drop.
Just don't! Do not take her class she is a nice lady and all but she is an awful professor. She is not helpful at all and blames you when the whole class fails the exams. She makes it primarily ALEK's and goes way too fast in her lectures and expects you to know the steps she skips. Just pick another professor its not worth it to be stuck with her.
She was pretty chill. The class itself isn't that hard if you actually do the work. A lot of the reviews are very dramatic. I wouldn't say she's the best prof ever but she's really not that bad.
Regina George. Mean girls book. That's all.
I don't see how anyone else could've taught the class better. She reviewed every problem that was going to be on the test, and would explain further whenever anyone had a question. The class is pretty much based off of 4 big tests, so just review the practice exams and you'll do just fine. Don't listen to the business majors lol.
MAT-154 was extremely easy if you put time into the course, especially if you trial and error your way through the infinite test reviews on the online site. Torres-Garcia is just an okay teacher, and doesn't really teach too well but you should have no trouble if you've taken any high-end Algebra or low-end pre-calculus in high school.
Goes too fast, and even so lectures take up the whole time, marks you if you even look at your phone + calls you out in front of everyone
She's wonderful! Don't take this class if you just want to be on your phone. She has rules set in place so students succeed. She integrates her faith well, and helps you through the homework and explains all concepts clearly. She thoroughly prepares you for tests by explaining each question step by step and encourages participation.
Back in high school there was a teacher who paid students to show him their feet in high school and honestly I was wishing I could go back to him. She gave horrible explanations and the TA wasn't helpful either.
As a person she is very nice, but the way she speaks sounds very condescending and treats us like children. Her accent is very thick and sometimes barely understandable. She never lectured and did everything on ALEKS which was nice because attendance wasn't mandatory, but due to this it was very difficult to get help on assignments or problems.
She's great. Don't take her class if you just end up on your phone. She makes certain rules to help her students succeed. She walks you through the homework and explains all concepts clearly. Always ready for questions. She thoroughly prepares you for tests too. I did deal with her not being clear about certain concepts being on or not on the exam.
