Excellent, clear, helpful, and really makes you think!
Never take this professor!!
Get out while you can! He teaches like you're scholars, not students.
Bad teacher. Hundreds of pages of reading per week and too much writing.
The only two positive must be him rating himself! You're NUTS!
The guy is more concerned about buffy the vampire slayer than about real literature!
Hours and hours of reading a night and too much complicated web work
not the nicest guy, but he loves what he does. he's very smart and is the easiest grader! even if you don't do a good paper if you hand it in on time, he will give u an A. if that's not great i don't know what it. I enjoyed his classes.
To be honest with you, this class is extremely easy, IF YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO BUT READ. Expect to be in groups, which is the best aspect of class. But when he lectures, just do what I did and go to sleep. Do the work, though you will get an A.
Great professor. those who gave him bad ratings are just lazy and shouldn't be in college. Yes, a lot of work, but you will learn a lot more than any other class. Highly recommend him.
Basically this class is horrible, if you don't like to read or aren't home to email papers by 6:00. I am going to be honest with you though, this class is easy, just do the damn work, an you get an A. Oh and try to be creative for group work. EASY CLASS
The class i had with Grover was a Intro to Lit course to which he brought all of his personal biases which i thought was not a very effective way of teaching an introductory course. be complacent with him and you will get far.
he gives lots of readings to do, makes u download FTP,the only good thing about the class so far was our group discussions,& the bad thing is hes very anal about how u send ur hw in through email & ALL hw has to be sent thru email the night before 6pm!
just check his website. that says it all
alot of readings and Hw, but if you take part in the discussions and send in HW on time you will do fine.
Very hard but very interesting
What a bitter, hateful man! If he spent more time concentrating on teaching his students than spewing hate in the discussion threads, maybe he would be a happier person! I can't believe this man is teaching!
Grover was an outstanding professor and an authentic leader.I took several classes in the mid to late 70's. I continue to learn from him on his websites. Very engaging and ethical-wheather you agree with him or not.
Pretty much as been said.Very knowledgeable and interesting lecturer, but extremely anal and demanding to the point of being unreasonable.Pushes his political beliefs. His class if very interesting, but it's not easy and know what you are getting in to.
I liked Grover. I don't agree with his politics, but I found him to be interesting, intelligent, and well read. His class was pretty demanding for a GER. As a bio student, I expected to hate it, but I really enjoyed it and earned an A.
You know what? I think Marxism is a load of crap, Communism is a travesty, and his politics are terrible. But he's articulate, intelligent, extremely knowledgable, and somewhat intellectually honest. It's always healthy to be exposed to the opposing side. Watch out for apologism. A brilliant fool.
having grover furr is a love/hate relationship. you love the material, you hate his teaching tacticts. you love to discuss, but you hate his rants. bittersweet...if you're interested in Vietnam, take this course. make sure you want to learn about that which is not taught
I really have an interest in the Middle Ages and Chaucer which was somewhat curtailed by taking this class. We learned more about opening ftp files and mailing lists than medieval literature. He doesnt really have a lot of respect for undergrads either.
i agree with his politics. i think he's an incredibly intelligent man. however, i disagree with his methods as an educator. he asserts that the class will be small-group discussion based, and then lectures for the better part of an hour, with no coherent plan. no feedback on homework or papers.
Furr canbe nice when he wants to be. He is very intelligent but always wants the last word. If he wasn't so arrogant and helped the students a bit more hed be a great teacher.
Dr. Furr was one of the most incredible professors I ever had. You may not agree with his ideas or his methods, but he was a quality teacher. He made you think. Even the conservatives in the class had to admit that. Then again, it was a much more tolerant time (1994,95)
Challenges the world view held by most students indoctrinated (brainwashed) K-12 in US public schools. Gives you a look at how and why history repeats itself through sugar coating past atrocities yielding a generation of geocentric, ignorant tools. Afraid to think for yourself, don’t take him.
My first class with him I hated. He challenged everything I thought I believed it. After my second class I realized I was there to think and to evaluate my beliefs, and really know what I stand for. I don't have the same political beliefs as him, but i was challenged to know my own believes.
A brillant and profound thinker. Very fair and quite interesting. I would take him again in a "heartbeat." You will be challenged to go beyond your parochial views regardless of your political views. Dr Furr appreciates solid scholarship and hard work. Very enjoyable class!
Amazing professor!! He truly causes you to think! There is an assignment every class but it's short. He is kind and extrememly intelligent. Take him if you want to be enlightened by a man who knows what he's talking about!
Its a class tha t is yours to fail. He sets it up so there are no books to buy, its all online. He knows his stuff. Its a lot of group work. Its an easy A if you put half effort into it.
Very, very intelligent man, just not very coherent. Makes you work hard, and I appreciate that, but sometimes rambled in class on unrelated topics. Communist? Maybe, but at least he knows what he stands for. Be prepared for a (good) challenge
The most wonderful professor i have ever had. Brilliant honest and is not afriad to show you the truth in his teachings yeah poverty sucks but its there. What weve learned before was merely fabrication and this man has opened my eyes **** Four gold stars for my comrade
Terrific professor. He's really intelligent and knows his stuff. All the right wing jerks hate him.
Class made you think but as long as you participate and know whats going on you'll get an A and learn at the same time. I took him years ago and still get his group emails. This was an eye opening experience.
Professor is derogatory, anti-american and insulting. What he calls a discussion is a lecture. His material is altered and his general attitude towards the US is frightening. Does not grade, easy "A" if your assignments are on time and submitted by e-mail. Worships the internet. The class could be much more without his personal views.
You'd never know this was an English class. It's taught more like a history class. HW is to write 300 words per class on readings you must print out from his website (load up on paper and ink). You won't know how you're doing because you never get any feedback on your work. Every class is uninspired group discussions. Disappointing.
Although we wrote a paper for every class, he never graded them or anything. I had no idea how I was doing. The only time I saw my grade was after the final. Pays lip service to critical thinking, but when you do it apparently it's not appreciated.
Dr. Furr is a great guy but all of his crazy homework assignments can get in the way. Aside from all the homework who have to read five books that are not very good. He is very stuck on his political opinions conservatives BEWARE! If your willing to do all the homework ( A LOT!) and try you have an A.
Only take this class if you have time for homework due for each day you have class. He is very nice, but definitely passionate about certain ideals. We read 5 books and 1 play and there was a paper due after each reading. The only downside is that you have to make time to read fairly boring books.
This man is extremely knowledgeable and engaging. He expects his students to work and to learn. He's "old school." (That makes me wonder where academia is heading...scary thought.) My experience has been through independent studies (X2), so I can't comment on his classroom approach, but politics aside, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for SERIOUS STUDENTS.
greatest guy ever!!!!
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR.... Avoid him.. He goes into EXTREME detail about assignments... Will repeat the same thing OVER & OVER again. Bores the hell outta u. VERY DEMANDING. Doesn't work with students. EASY F!!!!
all i have to say is if he is the only prof. teaching a class and you need that class for your major... change majors, it's just easier that way.
Had him for Great Books/ Ideas II. His teaching style is very out of the ordinary. A lot of people dont like him because of his weird politics, but what hes doing is teaching you an ALTERNATE perspective. Hes a nice guy, really liberal...or more like socialist. I learned a lot, and the material was sometimes really interesting. Take him!
this guy is really insane... you will have homework every class period but it is due the night before over mail! he expects a lot of you and means well. i would say dont take him unless u seriously have to!
Only take this professor if you enjoy a challenge and like to learn in depth about politics. He's difficult and doesn't work with his students, homework is always done through email..
RUN THE OTHER WAY NOW! I recieved a good grade in this class but he is unbareable!Forced me to write about the US toturing the Abu Gahrib prisoners. All I have to say is HOOORAH! Very political views and once you take him your are forever held hostage on his mailing list which means you will recieve FURR emails for life!
he is allright. very long winded at times about class issues. takes attendance every class. expects you to particpate but dont really have to if you say one good thing he goes off talking about it the whole class. midterm is optional if your grades are good. alot of reading. homework due every class. he knows his stuff, worth taking
the class is very interesting and the professor is extremely knowledgeable about the material, but there is a lot of work involved..be ready to put aside a lot of hours during the week just for this course..the stuff is interesting for the most part, but the final is insane and do not expect an A or B+..however if you want to learn, then take it
If you actually want to learn about the material, you should take this professor. he's very knowledgeable, though he does have his own views that he expresses. However, I haven't met a professor that hasn't indoctrinated their students. I thought there was a fair amount of work and he's pretty cool about attendance too.
Professor Furr was interesting and the novels he picked were fabulous. The material was very thought provoking. The class required a lot of writing. Not an easy class, but definitely worth it. I ended up liking him very much.
Annoying class and teacher. So rigid that you're screwed if you mess up the subject line in an e-mail to him. You could lose credit and never know it, because he won't tell you. You never know your grades, talks down to you, and the whole class is about him promoting his ideas and putting down yours.
Professor Furr is a really good teacher. I do not know why so many people hate him. If you do the homework and turn it in @ 8:00 PM your good. Not only that, if your even an hour or so over 8:00 PM, he will still give you credit. Hes also a good teacher The Right wingers should stop complaining and use their brain and argue properly for once.
This professor introduced students to plenty of interesting and informative readings. Follow his simple instructions on handing in assignments. They are not rocket science. I learned a lot and became engaged in the course. Those who dislike him are generally either not prepared for collegiate work or find his personal views to be offensive, I find.
Professor Furr makes some good observations in class, but I learned little about the history of journalism. The class readings are extremely slanted and most have to be printed out on YOUR computer. The class is less about the history of journalism and more about the problems associated with it.
He taught very little, if anything, about the History of Journalism. Most of the reading material was biased from the extreme left. It's good to be passionate about your views, but keep them out of the classroom.
He's an awesome professor. Very helpful and interesting. Please stop complaining about having to do work! Go get a job as a hairdresser if academics don't suit you. Really, it's ok, we all need to get our hair cut.
You will need to read more than you write in this course. There are no books for this class but you have to read a lot in articles and other stuff, I rather of had a book lol. 2 papers a week with tons of research soo if you have a job, and are doing school and more, don't take this class. You will learn a lot though.
I never had a truly horrible or a hellish experience that was unbearable to handle for a whole semester...until I took this class. Currently still enrolled in this class, Furr is extremely demanding to the point of being ridiculous. As a GenEd on politics and rebellion, he will usually make us read 10 plus pg hws. Do NOT, I repeat do NOT take him
I really don't think he's that bad.. He's not my fav prof, but he's manageable. The readings can be interesting at times, and the hw isnt that hard to do despite having a lot. He's pretty clear on his requirements from day 1, so you really can't complain if you fail to meet them. This is college. Learn not to complain too much. It could be worse.
dont take him for this class, you have to email all of your assignments, which you have every class by 8pm the night before class, he doesn't accept assignments because of little mistakes, like the title of your e-mail, etc. his class was horrible, worst class i've taken at montclair
This guy is pretty funny and definitely keeps your attention. Don't mind the weird hat, but his lectures and assignments are geared to teaching you the material. If Dr Furr is good at one thing, it is making sure EVERYONE knows the texts studied. Don't complain about the hw, its 2 times a week and at most 400 words-this is college after all.
I liked the guys classes...
He tends to over do it on homework assignment, which you have EVERY class, but I enjoyed it anyway. He loves his job and it shows through in the class discussions. He's lenient, but not stupid! If you go to class and do the work, you'll do well. Can't wait to take him again!
Overall - nice guy, understanding. If you email ahead of time that you'll be absent, totally fine. There are little writing assignments, but easily done in 10 mins. Discussions are insightful. You mostly work with your group. Books are interesting.
Hes best professor, this world can have!!
Very smart man!!! Class and work is a little tedious at times, but he makes you learn this way. Tries to make class fun, but serious about his job. I will try to take him again!
very easy teacher! homework every class, but it's very easy and quick. One research paper and a final online.very smart. he knows what he's talking about. lectures can be very boring so make sure you bring your laptop! attendance isn't mandatory; just email him before class and he'll excuse you. If you do your work, this class should be an easy A.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here & give the man serious accolades. I had him there in 1985 for World Literature, and he made you go off campus to get the books because they were cheaper. He's a socialist, but so what? I learned a different viewpoint from my own. Wrote a paper a week, but it taught me how to write well. You have it easier now!
He is a harsh grader, I usually liked literature classes but this guy will have you reading novels in a very short amount of time! HW is due at 8 pm before class, nice guy but will never take again.
very good prof, knows his stuff, very funny. do the hw assignment and you'll be fine
History of Journalism- Easy class, nice professor.. do the homework assignments and you'll be fine. Readings assigned each class but its short and easy
I have NEVER taken a worst professor in my life. His attitude is horrible and he purposely makes the students feel bad. he is not understand AT ALL. He does not teach just has you do discussion groups the whole time. DO NOT take his class!!!!!!!
Yikes, this guy is as boring as they come and seems to have a poor grasp of the facts...
LOVE HIM!! He is so funny and smart. The subject is boring and dull but as long as you do the work, show up to class, and bring the material then you'll pass easily!
I was in his Middle English Literature class in 1994. I never had any issues with him or his class.
One of the most honest professors I have every come across... If you are interested in exchanging and learning (both ways) both English language and history, I would really recommend the professor Furr
ALL about encouraging students to THINK FOR THEMSELVES! The discussion groups he puts us in definitely help with that. Some of the readings/assignments can get a little repetitive, but overall very intelligent and insightful. It's OK to disagree with his political views, but look past his teaching style and you'll see he does mean well.
There is quite a bit of reading, but that is what you expect going into an English course. You have to read though in order to pass his class. You have to talk in a class discussion about readings. Two papers about the books we read and a final. Furr is not as bad as he is put out to be
Intelligent. He is a great teacher. An inspiration.
The professor was incredibly dull and uninspiring as a lecturer. He managed to kill my interest in literature. He's entitled to his weird political views, but what I care about is how well he conveys his knowledge of literature. It was a great disappointment.
So there's this: As a DIRECT result of Professor Furr's Intro to Journalism class, I got my first real newsroom job (in 1987), which led to my second newsroom job, which led to better and better jobs lo these 25 years. Is he a bit of an oddball? Sure. But if you can get past that, he has a lot to offer, and I'll always be indebted to the man.
Years later, Grover Furr still stands out in my mind as one of the finest professors MSU has to offer.
The guy is awesome, if you are willing to think for yourself, instead of letting fox news think for you. I can't wait to attend his class again!
Absolutely recommend Prof Furr to anyone who has any real interest in literature! He may come off as intimidating at first because of his appearance and ivy league background but he is just the sweetest man ever. Encourages group discussion which I love. Not difficult. Homework is the main part of your grade and it isn't hard. Furr is the greatest!
Would frequently leave us alone in the class period. Gave us 20 minutes for the midterm. most people failed. Directions unclear. Waste of time. He doesn't believe we should be graded, but then fails half the class. If you want to fulfill credits do not take him he will ruin your gpa.
horrible. unhelpful, unclear - never available to students outside of class and you will go the entire semester without knowing what your grade is. do the homework.
Even though I got an A I still say he is one of the worst professors ever. Never tells you what your grade is. Not available for help or to talk to students. Do the homework and you will pass but if you want to learn anything at all do not take him ever!!! Horrible!!!!!!!!!
Furr is a sweet old man who has a lot of knowledge on the course, but he does tend to ramble quite a bit and doesn't discuss the final till the class before the exam. clear online syllabus which he updates as the semester goes on, he responds quickly to emails. Attend class, you don't really need to talk, just email hw on time, study for final
Put us in groups and made it a discussion course. Leaves all the time. An assignment due before every class. All hw turned in on email. Will not give credit for work if the formatting is not right, even if done correctly and turned in on time. Just do the assignments and you should pass. Weather does not matter to him. Campus open class.
Very tough grader! If you do not read you will 100% fail. The whole class is analysis of literature. If you are not an English major and have a chance to fill your Gen Ed a different way, definitely do not take this class. But, if you are really interested in English, this class is a great start! I did learn a lot for my major!
God Awful teacher! He is absolutely useless in the classroom. He doesn't teach or read what you write. His tests are impossible. He provides you with no help at all. He is condescending and has an attitude when you ask for help. He'd better if he was in Communist Russia- and so would we!
Furr does not want to know his students or hear what they have to say. He never graded any of our twice weekly homework essays, never gave us any tests until the final. Zero feedback. If you send in your homework with the wrong heading he will reject it. He has his own webpage and doesn't use Canvas. He left us alone for 15 minutes most classes.
Confusing as far as grading and expectations, easy class to pass as far as coming to class. Not much participation, he just talks a lot.
Professor Furr was overall a good professor. He gives a lot of reading and writing work, but grades fairly as long as you do things the way he wants to. He has a lot of knowledge about the subject matter. Only complaint is he is not very helpful when students reach out to him.
By far one of the most annoying professors I have ever had. If you submit an assignment even slightly off from his email criteria he won't accept it, and its the most pointless thing ever. Nice guy but definitely not worth all the busy work. Nightly homework seems very high school. If your just taking him for an elective I suggest someone else
He's a fair professor. If you do the work, you'll do well. He requires you to read 5 specific novels throughout the semester, 5 papers, and several mini essays that prepare you for group discussions. He has his flaws-he doesn't help if you have ?'s in or outside of class and he tends to go off on tangents, but he is very knowledgeable in his field.
He is a sweet old man, but his homework assignments as a HUGE nuisance, it feels like busy work from high school. He wasn't very helpful in the beginning of the class and he doesn't use canvas... instead its this old outdates website of his which gives me a headache to read. He a good person I'm sure... but teaching skill aren't great. Too much hw.
Prof. Furr is passionate about the subject, and what you get from his passion depends on the effort you put forth. Working in groups cuts both ways- it makes the material easier to discuss but it's a pain when half the students don't contribute. He is very specific about what is required. A kind, caring man whose class should be experienced.
He literally, every single class, gets off topic. I know when I walk in I'm not going to learn. Other people in world lit here are reading fairy tales, but in his class, you are reading novels about colonized people and writing papers before every class. Always due at 8 the night before and if it's not "plain text" he will send your essay back.
Professor Furr will not teach you. He'll leave class 4-5 times during the lecture for 10 minutes and just stand outside. If anything is slightly off when emailing him, he will not accept it. Does not use canvas. Only good thing is the midterm is your hw grade overall and final is taken as a class. But I have learned nothing. Stay far away.
He lectures for the whole class, except for a short group discussion. Two homework assignments per week, in which you summarize a story or article. Super picky about plain-text and the headers of emails. Doesn't tell you your grades or use canvas. If you attend class and do the homeworks it should be an easy A, but don't expect to learn much.
I have never encountered a worse professor than Furr. He refused to switch from his old website to canvas and had ridiculous rules for submitting assignments. He was a cranky, rude old man and I advise staying away from taking his class at all costs.
Lot's of homework and no feedback on it, at least not for me. I was never told if I did my homework correctly or not, only that my formatting was correct/incorrect. Final exam was open homework/notes/text, but with only two hours I felt there was too much content involved and searching for the correct answer to do anything but worry about time.
Professor Furr is really intimidating when you first meet him. He assigns all these books and seems like the toughest grader. Once you get the hang of what he wants you will do great. LEARN PURE ANALYSIS. He will force you to read a bunch of books as long as you can talk about them and write about the quotes. You are Gucci. (Even if you dont read)
Furr is a very kind man and is accessible outside class. He is passionate about the subject and very knowledgeable. His homework assignments and final are all long and online, but super easy. At first him not using Canvas is weird but you get used to it & see how easy it is to use. Taking him again next semester!
Taken this prof twice, taking him again in the Spring. Do your homework and show up to class and you'll pass. Very easy and he responds to emails quickly. Final is easy and there is no midterm. Only assignments are homework that are from a textbook.
Professor Furr is really nice and calm professor. I recommend having a laptop or device for this class because you need homework and textbook for the class. Buy an online textbook TRUST ME. You have homework for every class but its really important in receiving an A. Make sure you submit on time. No Midterm just Final and short paper.
Taken him 3 times his classes are not difficult. Just read and do the homework every week. Every week there are 2 homework assignments, your midterm grade is your hw grade. Just do the hw! The final isn't difficult either. He is lecture heavy so beware if you don't want that. All in it's not hard do your hw and show up!
Yikes. Hard to stay engaged in his class. He literally just talks nonstop for an hour straight with half of what he's saying being irrelevant. Every class, he would walk outside for like 10 minutes and tell us to discuss with our group. Where does he go?? Also, he keeps talking about & encouraging communism, which got really annoying really fast.
He has crazy opinions on everything and turns people off bigtime. Time to leave Grover.
So boring. A course about "great books" in which we read mostly historical articles, rather than actual books. He made a literature class a historical lecture. I distinctly remember his focus on pirates and their communist foundations, cool to learn about, but not exactly what I wanted from this course. Definitely challenges you - to stay awake.
took him for Chaucer, you can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. He will lecture your head off the entire class, but he is very understanding if you communicate with him. It is pretty hard to fail his class if you show up pretty consistently and do the homework that you do not even need to answer 100% correctly.
Prof. Furr is pretty tough in the beginning. You won't really like him at first because his rules are very selective and his homework format takes a little while to get used to and wont tell u grades. Other than that he is a great and funny guy and he'll grow on you over time. Grover is a kind man and as long as you read and do the hw you'll be ok.
Forces you to hand in work through e-mail. The homework/papers aren't difficult but the requirements are LONG. If you make one tiny formatting mistake then he emails it back, even if it's still legible. DON'T take this class is you're looking for an easy Gen-Ed. He's an incredibly tedious professor and if you can't keep up with that then beware.
okay professor. would probably take again.
This professor is difficult but as long as you do the readings and everything asked of you you will get a good grade. Overall not bad just talks a lot and wants your participation. Very nice and understanding. Also very tough on attendance i suggest not skipping at all and just attending every class to maintain a good grade.
He is an unironic Stalinist and he keeps bringing up stalin and trotsky lying in class for some reason. Lectures were backbreaking and I felt he was bad in getting the attention of students. Kept going on tangents about Stalin, found it honestly weird.
He is the most tedious professor ever. Is a tough grader and is more worried about politics than what he has to teach about.
Professor Furr is great. Do the work, ask questions, he will love it! The haters are just going to hate.
Dropped his class after day 1. Respectfully, if you have accommodations, I highly recommend steering clear of this professor. He pretty much argued with me over my accommodations and chose not to abide by them, saying that I had plenty of time to complete his assignments. If you can handle a ton of work, great, but if not, don't take this class.
Might come off as harsh at first but is honestly a pretty nice guy. Homework is easy but tedious and repetitive and his guidelines for homework and paper are really confusing at first but you will get used to it pretty quickly. He doesn't use canvas and instead has you email homework to him. Not a bad class or professor though.
The first week was really daunting with his website, the amount of hw, and the requirements for the papers but it really wasn't that crazy. He seemed really tough, but he got nicer later in the semester and would even try to crack a couple jokes. Super important to do the hw and show up though. It was a pretty good class, I'd take another with him.
Attended his discord lecture. 10/10.
Half of the class dropped the first two days. does not use canvas for anything. has his own website. has very high expectations and guidelines that you NEED to follow or else you fail. his papers, homework, and emails NEED to be emailed to him in plain text format. only accept his opinion. work is not hard but there is so much of it. hard grader
terrible. everything about this class was terrible.
