Excellent
hard to understand

no eenlish, good organization though
Once you understand her she's a very good teacher. Would take again.

Interesting for taking speech samples, but not good for trying to learn about a "fors oda ranje-kotta messod" etc.
um, she knows english, but it's hiding somewhere underneath a very very heavy accent. "deeforenchal eekwashon" pardon? yeah, and the TA was russian. so it was pretty hard learning math in both chinese and russian. although, she is somewhat e
Awful Professor She didnt know anything and couldnt speak any English. Never take her class
you cannot understand a word she says.
HORRIBLE!
She is not perfect. Sometimes emotional and revengeful. On other hand, she is well-organized and polite in routine, and cute and reliable in friendship. Refrain from critics and use her office hours.
Very hard to understand and not very helpful.
Impossible to understand, and when you do, she still can't teach! The only way I got through is because I had taken calculus before. RUN!
very unclear, only taught theory, but expected you to understand applications for exams. Blamed students and didnt take responsiblity for not being able to teach. awful experience!
BORING. If you are taking her, hope you had calculus before because most of the lectures are very unclear. Accent makes it hard to understand things but she does seem to care about her students passing and learning
I agree with everybody else. Ive always understood math and found myself understanding the lectures and totally failing the the exams. Don't take this class unless you've had calculus before and definetely take CLAS
Don't take her class if this is the first time you're taking calculus. She doesn't like curving midterms.
Messy writing, very thick accent, no calculators on tests, very enthusiastic about math, midterm exactly like practice midterm
dont take her unless you must! shes unclear and her tests are horrible! her teaching isnt that great either.
Asian Accent that isn't too bad. Gives examples that are too simpistic, Extremely hard midterm, but she will curve if the whole class is below average. On the last midterm almost 40 ppl got below 50!!! Try to find someone else...
Very bad!!! Stay away she is awful. She wears the same shirt everyday and doesnt teach. Midterm is extremely difficult and she goes at a very fast pace. Twice as fast as other 3B classes. Bad, Bad, Bad teacher.
Ok, so she wasn't the best prof on earth, but she's by no means the worst. Sometimes it's hard to understand due to her accent, but it's not too bad at all. Her examples are a bit simplistic, but you'll catch on to the concepts. Homework's generally easy, so are her exams. The class is ok.
Hard to understand sometimes, the tests were pretty hard, but she is willing to help you if you go to her office hours.
I could never understand what she was saying and her midterms were very hard. But she always wore the best blazers, and used American slang from the 50's.
Wei is a really nice professor. Although she is not clear at times, you can really tell that she tries hard to be a good professor and really cares for her students. Her homeworks are easy and are done through Webwork, midterms and final are not to bad, she also gives a practice test which is almost identical. Good teachers overall.
terrible, just terrible, this coming from a person who got an A- in the class
Tests are really hard
where do i start? first off she hardly speaks english, which makes teaching a little hard. and she goes through material really fast, and focuses a lot on proofs instead of explaing the material. also her tests are really hard, i had to retake this class i
I heard this all year, Equashions and Equilwribrium. Can't speak English, doesn't explain what she is really doing. Doesn't explain to you what the numbers on the board really mean or represent. basically kill yourself if you get her.
In my opinion, her tests are hard, there's alot of homework, and she makes you feel dumb in office hours. She always makes herself available outside of class tho, and the material wasn't hard, just the tests were
This woman does not speak any english, so if you plan on learning, take another class.
the class would be alot easier if she spoke english better...hard to understand and follow... do not take her for a teacher
even though i completely agree that she was a terrible professor I STILL RECOMMEND HER. i only went to her lectures for the midterm and final and aced the class. I took CLAS which is all you really need to do if you want to pass. all her tests are EXACTLY like the practice tests, so you barely even have to study. take CLAS and this class is easy
she absolutely sucks and doesn't speak english!!take the class because it's easy but you cant understand a damn thing this lady says!
She is very nice, so it's hard to get extremely annoyed with her. However, she could definitely work on her English. Tests were fair. Work at it and you'll be fine.
You'll be surprised that she got a job as a professor after one lecture. you're going to come out of class and be like, did someone actually think people can understand what is coming out of her mouth?
Terrible. Does not speak English well at all, grades homework completely unfairly, lectures sucked. Only good thing: midterm was exactly like practice test. Take CLAS if you want to do well.
Is not very clear in lecture, but is fair, very nice, and cares about her class. If you go to CLAS then this class will be easy. The homework is lame but her tests/quizes are exactly the same as the sample midterms she hands out in class.
Hard to understand her because she has a thick accent, but you get use to it. Her midterms were exactly like her practice test so the midterms were relatively easy. This class easy easy to get an A, I didn't have CLAS and I didn't study til the last minute and I pulled off an A. Take her, she's easy!
has a thick accent which sucks bc you need your math prof to be able to explain difficult concepts and you cant understand what she is saying. all the tests are major curveballs and sitting in class was always frustrating. dont take her if you can help it
This class screwed over my GPA. You can't undertand her, the TA's SUCK, things are graded unfairly and tests are pretty hard. Don't take her as a teacher if you have the choice and if you do get stuck with her take CLAS so you can at least learn a little cause you won't learn anything in lecture
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!!! If your options are to take a class by Wei or get sent to Iraq, pack plenty of water and ammunition. She should be fired from this school.
Overall, she's a good teacher. She does have some faults, such as: poor english skills (she talks like a fob) but you get used to it, poor fashion sense (she still wears sketchers and a jacket that looks like she got attacked by fireballs), but other than that, she teaches very well and her midterms are straight up and easy if you do HW.
A little hard to understand, but uses good examples. Midterms and final are straight forward. Her choice of clothing shouldn't matter.
good teacher. straightforward tests with nothing too different than what's on homeworks or problems she's done in class. She'll basically tell you what's on the midterm/final so it's easy to prepare
She has a thick accent, but you get used to it very quickly. Once you get past her accent, she's a pretty good teacher: very straightforward. Shows you what you need to know with sufficient examples to learn the material properly in class. Homework is not too difficult, and her tests are identical to the homework. Exams are very straightfoward.
Accent is not a barrier to understanding. I followed every word. She is very clear, and demonstrates the methodical approach to the material. If you do the homework, and go over the examples from class, you will get A's on the exams, as they are always incredibly straightforward. She is very friendly in office hours, and very eager to help.
Extremely clear on what is expected on exams. Very concise lectures. Some will tell you her accent is a problem... Not if you pay attention. She's brilliant and a very good instructor.
Extremely clear on what is expected on exams. Very concise lectures. Some will tell you her accent is a problem... Not if you pay attention. She's brilliant and a very good instructor.
Mrs. Wei is a very bad communicator, and not just because of her incorrect grammar and her accent. She is trying her best, but she is not clear when it comes to explaining math processes. she always adds extra twists to her exams, so unless u are great at math, u will miss at least 1 of the 5 problems. This class could easily be taught better.
Really awful. If you struggle in math and are only taking it to fill a G.E. DON'T! Her accent is very hard to follow especially if you aren't a math person. Tests are extremely difficult and don't reflect the homework. Curve is useless. She isn't every approachable.
She's really nice but if youre not a math person I suggest NOT taking this class. It goes too fast and is pretty hard.
I had Wei for the easiest calculus class in the series but she was still the best professor that I have had so far in college. Her lectures were very clear and her tests straightforward. She didn't try to teach you random math material that wasn't useful. Her examples in class were superb and overall I would highly recommend her, at least for 5A
"Princes"! Horrible Professor. Now I will have to retake the damn class.
she has no idea what she's doing. On more than one occasion has put the wrong answers on the projector. I stopped going to class altogether and just started attending CLAS and my dicussion groups and squeezed by with a C. Midterm and final were hard. CLAS and my roomate's boyfriend being a calcus tutor is the only way passed
This class was difficult, especially considering I took no pre-calc or calculus prior. Attend CLAS, do EVERY h/w assignment, and you should be able to succeed. I managed in A in the class, but it took some work. Wound up teaching myself some of the material by trial and error. She is a bit difficult to understand, but it does get easier with time.
The class was fairly easy, lectures COMPLETELY useless, went occasionally but didn't pay attention, CLAS is a must and a good substitute for lecture, professor was very nice but generally more confusing than helpful...
The worst teacher i had at santa barbara. First off, she cannot teach! She took things i knew how to do, and confused me to the point where i could no longer do them. The book was completely useless, and you could not teach yourself by reading it. Your best bet is going CLAS, otherwise you will be so confused. Nice lady, but should not teach-so bad
Wow you 34A guys certainly didn't like Wei too much but making statements like she didn't know what she was doing is just stupid. She has been doing math for most of your life and I can only speak from personal(5A) experience when I say that she did a great job. She was a good teacher and her tests were fair. What more could I ask?
It seems most bad reviews here came from students who were incapable of understand the subject matter (read'em for yourself). In my experience, Wei was nothing short of amazing. She is very invested in her students, thorough and well-rounded with her lectures & HW assignments, and goes out of her way to help you in anyway she can. Most recommended!
She is incredibly hard to understand...She taught the class thru proofs only w/o concepts. Do your assignments but no need to attend class. She'll give you 4 units no matter what
she is way too advanced to be teaching lower calc. but overall i did learn alot. tests are difficult but go to CLAS and you will be fine
Seriously, anyone complaining is absolutely absurd. Yes, she is very hard to understand, and yes, lecture isn't very helpful. If you, however, study the material, do the homework, and ask for assistance (CLAS/Office Hours), you will find both her and her tests very fair. 3B has been easier than 3A, because Wei is both fair and helpful.
One the worst teachers I had since I've been here @ UCSB.
Lectures were completely pointless to go to, felt like she was reading off a textbook. But her class was not too shabby, just go to CLAS, do the homework assignments, show up for section to take pop quizzes, and memorize the practice midterms and you should be able to pull off at least a B.
Hard to understand. Crazy hard tests. The best grade on the midterm was a 40 out of 100. So the professor made it out of 50. Homework is not too bad.
one of the nicest and most helpful profs you will ever have. terrific during OH. class was tough, but she helped everyone on the final. dont worry about the accent.
Smart lady, awful teacher. That summarizes it. Incomprehensible lectures, difficult tests she doesn't prepare you for, and homework that doesn't help you on the test (and the lecture doesn't help you with the homework).
Horrible teacher
Terrible professor. PowerPoint text lectures, difficult and time consuming webwork, and even more difficult tests. No curve at the end of quarter.
Accent is way too hard to understand. Book is very unclear, and the homework site was very tedious yet unhelpful. Tests are manageable, but it is easy to mess up. No curve. Avoid at all costs.
A horrible teacher. She has no enthusiasm in teaching and with students. A hard class because of lack of clarity.
Math 8 is a hard class regardless of who the professor is. Professor Wei did have good lectures and was really helpful in office hours. But our weekly homework assignments were graded ridiculously hard. Expect no more than a C average on the homework. She also taught us a new topic during the final. Go to office hours for help.
Her lectures were pretty clear and concise. She gave a lot of hw, but that should be expected for math 8 if you want to do well. I highly recommend reading the book along with the lectures!
Professor Wei gives very unclear lectures and struggles to explain WHY for any given concept. She assigns homework that is way harder than what she has taught in class, and there are limited tries so we cannot experiment. There is no curve and all she told us about the midterm was number of questions and generic topics. Class has a daunting feel.
Hard hw. Weird tests. Such a heavy accent and no curve.
Professor Wei would be one of the best Math teacher at UCSB if it weren't for her accent. Every lecture contains a lot of information so skipping one class becomes a big mistake. Homework will be hard but doable if you look at your notes (and if you take good ones). Tests are exactly like the homework so if you know how to do the hw you'll be fine.
Professor Wei is an excellent professor and really puts in a good attempt to get the lecture material across. Her accent is noticeable, but if you can get pass her accent, she conveys the material pretty well. Her exams are pretty straight forward and based off of the homework. The final exam was harder than the midterms. Overall, pretty good.
Professor Wei is a professor who you can tell cares about the success of her class. I truly appreciated her lectures being available on Gauchospace, which is something I have rarely had in Math at UCSB. She does a fine job teaching the class and the midterms and final were fair and to her prior hints. If you try hard you will do fine.
Absolutely could not get past her accent. Iclicker was graded for correctness, which is very stupid. So was hw, and you only got limited attempts on it. So both were more like quizzes. Bright spot is that exams are fairly straightforward and if you study the slides and the hw you should be well prepared for them. Would not take her again though.
While her lectures are straightforward once you get past her accent and the tests are fairly okay, I'll never forgive her for curving the class DOWN at the end of finals because the average was higher than she wanted.
Wei is one of the better upperdiv professors. Her class is tough but she is very willing to help students and listens to feedback -- she won't just brush you off if you're struggling. There's 4 pop quizzes each quarter, and she assigns quite a bit of homework but in the end you'll definitely learn the material. Her tests are tough but reasonable.
Wei is an excellent professor. Her lectures teach students important theorems from the book and proofs her gives are clear and easy to understand. Although attendance is not mandatory, one should not miss her lectures. Final is largely based on homework and not hard at all for students who carefully finish their homework with their own effort.
Her accent isn't significant, she's very easy to understand if you're paying attention. She explains the proof methods clearly and I learned a lot in her class. Tests were the same difficulty and topics as the homework, which is turned in weekly and graded for correctness. The required written homework helped me really learn all the topics.
Class was not structured well. First half was too slow and midterm was not too hard. The last two weeks were completely rushed and I felt very unprepared for the final
Midterm was easy, final was awful. Her lectures are difficult to understand and she gets frustrated with questions in office hours, but is sometimes helpful.
Don't use the practice final to study, you pretty much have to know everything from the sections in the book. Final was one of the hardest finals I've taken at UCSB. Don't think she curves the class
From previous reviews, I was scared that Prof. Wei's accent would be an issue but her accent is actually ez to pass through/understandable. You get 10 questions per homework (rare to see limited attempts) per week--aka a chill class in terms of workload. Her bi-weekly quizzes are straightforward & if you took calc bc, this class is a good review!
I did great on quizzes, hw, and the midterm. I was expecting at least a B but the final was so much more difficult, compared to everything else. Did not drop lowest hw score either, even though stated in syllabus. I learned more form CLAS and section than the actual lectures.
Frankly say, professor Wei did a good job in Math 4b class. Her accent is not a big problem and she covers every question raised by her students. Accessableduring office hour, and offers a lot of help to solve student's confusion. Students are graded by homework, quizzes, mid and final. Trust me, listen to lecture carefully and these won't be hard.
Class was pretty straightforward material wise. However, the professor is terrible. I did not understand anything from her lectures. She also rounded everyone's grade down. She also said in the syllabus she would drop the lowest hw but did not live up to that promise. The rounding down is completely unforgivable since I earned my grade.
She's pretty good throughout the semester. Quizzes and midterms were straightforward and easy if you know what you're doing. Final was much more difficult, and she curved our grades DOWN. If you want an A be prepared to score near-perfect on every test bc she might lower your grade.
She's a great lecturer but really messed up the entire class with grades. The final was significantly harder than anything seen in the class (not even sure we learned some of the stuff), she didn't follow her syllabus and drop assignments, and curved down the class! Still have no idea why profs punish students for doing well. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Terrible terrible terrible. Curved down the entire class a ridiculous amount. To get a B you needed a 88%. Can barely understand her because of the accent, does not communicate with students, and even changed her mind about the syllabus on the last day grades were due in a way which hurt her students. Do not take any of her classes
Lectures are great, quizzes and homework are not difficult. I messed up my final so I expected to get a B+ (I got my homework and quizzes around 95%), but she messed up grading. She didn't have time to drop the lowest score of homework manually, which she promised in the syllabus; and she didn't make up for our loss but curved down (95+ A, 90+ B)!
She is a good professor and is knowledgeable. The accent isn't a problem for me at all. She adjusted the grading scale because the class average was too high for her. She also didn't drop a hw like she said she would on the syllabus. I feel like most profs try to accommodate student's needs during this pandemic but she did the opposite.
A pretty good professor overall. The down curve and not dropping the lowest HW score initially caught a lot of us off guard but I'm glad everything was fixed in the end. Quizzes and midterms are similar to lecture problems and HW is on webwork with unlimited attempts. Honestly one of the better math profs, but be careful of the grading scale.
I didn't even know curving down was a thing until I took this class. I took this class during COVID so it was much more difficult to concentrate, however I did not feel that I could learn a lot from her lectures anyway; everything I learned was on my own. I seriously do not recommend, not even as a last resort. Take it at a CC if needed.
The final was so unreasonably difficult. It was nothing like the practice problems in the textbook, the homework, or lecture examples. I got so many points off because of tiny errors and it really messed up my grade. Also what kind of professor curves down?
Prof. Wei changed grading eventually and I got what I expected. Lowest scores were manually dropped, and grades were given fairly. So to be fair, I think the overall course deserves 3-4 out of 5. But I'm not sure if grading would be tough next time.
The weekly homework in this class is tough; you get unlimited chances though. The biweekly quizzes and the midterm are similar to the homework, but then the final absolutely murders you, and shell curve the final grade down. For my class she didnt drop the lowest quiz/hw grade on time, which left things on an irresponsible note.
** rating for MATH 4A. Wei is extremely difficult to understand during lecture. I completely self taught myself linear algebra, & going to CLAS saved me. Her lectures are useless. Midterms are 40% and the final is 40%, with the other 20 being HW -- ridiculous grade breakdown. Also did not inform students of the letter grade breakdown as it was TBD
Closely all the grading bases on exam. No easy point. Tough grader. Weird lecture.
Avoid unless you have no choice! Pretty much a self-taught course because lectures are useless and hard to follow. Concepts are actually simple, but become really hard to grasp when you aren't taught it well! HW is doable and problems are fair, but did horribly on tests despite feeling confident about the material and attending CLAS every week.
Prof Wei's class was a horrible experience. Lectures were confusing and she would often speed through her lecture slides. Homework was managable due to unlimited tries. Midterms (2 worth 20% each) were challenging, but the Final (40%) did not resemble her "Final review" whatsoever and left me lost. Overall, self learning is a must, and take CLAS!
Maybe Prof. Wei used a different grading system in the past, but Math 4B in W24 was reasonable. Tests are reasonable, lectures are good, and quizzes are normally reasonable. Lectures can be a bit hard to understand, but she posts everything. Easy to piece together yourself. Would take again over some other math profs. Rating 4 to boost.
When I went into this class, I was a little bit spooked by the RMP reviews. However, after a little bit of being in this class, I really like it. Easy lectures and the professor clearly cares about improving and making her class a clear and fair experience. Of course, MATH 4B is going to be difficult, but study and you will be perfectly fine.
I don't know why Prof Wei is rated so low, they're a very easy grader with all exam question topics clearly outlined. I skipped all my classes and then used an anime girl chatbot to study for the midterms and got near perfect scores. Heard their lectures were a bit confusing but that's about it.
Prof. Wei's lecture is really straight forward and her slides are good for reviewing. Honestly her exams need some preparation, but they are not very tough. 80% exams, 20% homework. She posts grade standard after the final. I think only top 20% get A's. In 4b, there's no further explanation for theories behind differential equations.
Professor Wei is a great lecturer. Her explanations are very easy to follow and she makes the content interesting and fun. Math 4B is not the easiest, but Wei posts what content each question will cover before each exam, so you know exactly what to study. If you go to lecture and section, this class will be very easy.
Great professor, but few opportunities to get your grade up.
Prof Wei is like an Asian auntie who's a professor. The lecture notes are posted, but she always goes through the problems. If you have a question, she thoroughly explains and gives a fundamental answer. She literally tells you what types of problems are going to be on both miderms + final and practice, but the final was more tricky than expected.
NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Trust me
