Great guy, and is clearly passionate about the subject. Hilarious and a bit eccentric. Makes everyone more interested in the class and explains well. Weekly homework and quizzes make up for easy points.
Dreyer is a great guy and wants all of his students to do well. His midterms are also difficult. You should know a great deal of calculus before entering his class. Otherwise, I would advise taking a different professor.
Dreyer is really passionate about his subject. Is willing to help you but mind you he is a tough grader. Unless you really like Calc, and are good at it you can take him. Overall he is really supportive. the class has three exams in total including a cumulative final
Guillaume is probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had. Really good at explaining things, always really accessible, and honestly it's quite an easy class as long as you pay attention and do everything he assigns you. He prepares you well for the exams, so you are in good hands. Cool dude too, he never wears shoes
Dreyer is a great professor. He cares a lot about his students, and works hard to ensure that they understand the material. The homework and quizzes are easy points. Easily one of the best math teachers I have had.
Nice guy but not all that great at explaining in my experience. Learned more from my TA than from the prof himself. Sometimes his lectures left me more confused than I would have been if I had taught myself from the book. Obviously some people had a great experience with him, but this just wasn't the case for me.
Young, energetic, and knows the material. That being said, he is a tough grader and YOU WILL NOT DO WELL if you aren't willing to put in the hours of work calculus demands. He is better, but also harder than most.
Dreyer is hilarious and really smart but sometimes gets really off topic. Ask a lot of questions if you're confused because otherwise he'll gloss over everything. Practice midterms are super similar to the actual midterms.
Funny professor, tests are basically his practice tests but with different numbers and one question that is "designed for you to think a little bit," but not too much. Time crunches on tests are the main reason why this course was challenging. Practice a lot and time yourself. Didn't do this for the final and bumped from A to A- because of it.
Super energetic. If you go to his office hours he will give specific pointers. Make sure you do practice tests for midterms and FOR SURE the final.
Appears as though he did not read the textbook and became angry at students who did and asked him questions from it. Problem is his lectures were full of mistakes so we needed the text. More interested in research than teaching. Often fun and encouraging in office hrs but more interested in showing off than teaching us basics at a normal speed.
His lectures were quite rushed and difficult to understand. He introduced a lot of interesting ways to look at linear algebra, but didn't teach them wholly accurately. In office hours, he wasn't very accessible and a bit testy to be honest. I learned mostly from the textbook. He's good for Calc, apparently, but not for linear algebra.
Smart guy. Preferred to show off than teach. Textbook was helpful but he said the textbook had wrong info although all the homework problems came from it. Gave extra time to complete homework but some people complained that he never added their homework score to the final grade and never responded. Should honestly stick to research.
Guillaume is no doubt tough, but so worth it. Probably the most passionate professor Ive had at USC. Really cares about the material and really cares about his students, does his best to make challenging material feel doable.
Honestly had such a bad experience in this class. His lectures were nothing like the tests and the tests were 10 times harder than the homework. 0/10 would recommend.
Absolutely terrible at explaining the material, i learned everything I knew from the discussion section and the homework. He left and unreasonably huge amount of homework and was an incredibly difficult grader. He would mark off on test for literary anything. was not upstanding at all to students and didn't all allow a note sheet on test. DONT TAKE
Guillaume is a very tough prof. No formula sheets on his midterms which are hard on their own. Lots of homework. His quizzes are challenging. However, he is my FAVORITE so far. He is very caring. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Just ask any questions you have and he will answer them and he really appreciates his students making an effort. I recommend him!!!
His lecture is so confusing! The homework and quizzes are nothing like the lecture. I am basically self-learning, spending all day on the homework and preparing for the quiz. This is the first semester I transfer to USC, I have to say it's really a bad experience even though it's only been a week since the school started. Miss my old math Professor.
The professor is a nice guy overall. He is passionate about the subject and cares about the students. However, the lectures are unnecessarily hard and complicated. The tests and homework are graded toughly. Take him if you want some challenges.
He's a super challenging professor but prepares you SO WELL for the final. Honestly had such a good experience in this class - definitely my favorite math class I've ever taken. If you just keep up with the homeworks you will be fine. Go to office hours! He is so kind and willing to answer questions
Professor Dreyer is very caring and passionate about math. Lectures were sometimes confusing but he is very helpful and clarifies difficult topics well during office hours. I thought his class was pretty challenging and there was a decent amount of homework but I felt like he prepared us well for the midterms and final. Would recommend him!
Wonderful professor, really really passionate about both math and teaching. Really funny too, lectures aren't just him droning on and on. I wish all math professors were like him! Class was very hard, but he certainly helps a lot.
He gives a LOT of homework, and his quizzes are nothing like his homework. He gets off topic a lot during his lectures, so we always have to postpone stuff. The TA I had was really nice, he is the only reason I can still do well in the class.
Very passionate and competent. Wouldn't recommend for engineers, as he is heavy on theory
Dreyers! He helped me really understand the content, was incredibly passionate about math, teaching, and life.
Dreyer gives hard tests and lots of homework. However, his lectures are decent. If you're an excellent math student you could get away with taking his class. Otherwise, find someone else and make your life easier. Engineering at USC has enough difficult classes, don't make calc 1 one of them.
Dreyer is a funny guy and really not a bad lecturer. However the way his class is set up is so disjointed I often felt like I was being tested on types of problems barely explained at all. Being successful is largely dependent on a good TA (which I did not have). The quizzes are very hard and the homework is graded on an absurd accuracy criteria
The worst mathematics Professor at USC, on the first day of class states I don't like the book so we are getting a different book but I also don't like the book. His lectures are long and sometimes he doesn't even know what he is doing. The midterms are extremely long and you have a 95% chance of not finishing the exam. some problems had 10 parts.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had! The lectures are pretty straightforward, but the tests are very difficult. Questions don't match up with what we covered in class and there are way too many to finish in time. Average on the first test was a 59% after the curve. My discussion started with 12 people and ended with 3 because everyone dropped.
Tbh he is really nice and passionate about the topic. I feel like he is the most down-to-earth prof I've ever had at USC. But his MATH435 is hard and confusing. He said he didn't like the textbook so he designed the lecture notes, but frequently students felt disconnection between lectures. Class satrted w/ 20ppl and ended w/ 8. Get ready to work.
Already took Calc 1 before and it's still pretty tough! I can hardly imagine what it's like for people who haven't. Taking Guillaume's class for an "easy A"? Think again. Homework is 20-30 questions most of the time (other classes apparently get 10 max) and takes ages. If you took Calc before you can get away with skipping MOST lectures though.
Quizzes or tests are 10x harder than any homework or in-class questions. When he goes over questions in class he skips over steps and assumes that everyone knows how to do it but it just makes it even more confusing. Half of the class dropped after the second midterm. I used to love calculus, but I would not recommend taking it with this professor.
Guillaume is a great professor when it comes to teaching Math. His passion for teaching math is very clear but unfortunately, he can get very confusing very fast. His tests are known to be the hardest. My downfall was the Exams . If you have a REALLY strong background in Calc take him, otherwise find someone else.
Professor Guillaume is good if you already have a strong grasp on Calculus, but if you do no, get ready to be confused. He moves extremely fast and expects students to already know every single trick to solving problems. This class is also not good if you work better from formulas, it is meant for students who are mathematically creative.
Math 435 is insane. It should be rightfully designated as a transition course from undergrad to graduate-level mathematics. That being said, for those who are passionate about math and enjoy calculus and linear algebra, I highly recommend Dreyer and 435. He is passionate and will push you into being a better mathematician. Just be warned
He doesn't explain anything, his writing is messy, and he expects us to know what his abbreviations mean. I got high As in all my high school math courses... and I had to withdrawal. Do not recommend his class.
Prof Dreyer is obviously a nice guy, but his lectures don't make sense and the homework takes forever. Also, the level of difficulty of what he goes over in lecture is no where near as difficult as quizzes and midterms. I've never spent so much time studying for math to get such horrible quiz/test scores. NOT WORTH IT...
Professor Dreyer is hard to reach, he doesn't answer his emails, and he doesn't specify how he grades his quizzes and tests. Overall, I expected so much more from my first college math professor and this class has turned an already bad freshman experience into a terrible one.
I've never hated calculus so much...I thought this class would be easy to handle since I did well in APCALC. Lectures are SO confusing, and the HW is nothing similar to lectures. Tests are way more difficult than discussion problems too. Professor Dreyer is a very caring guy, but if u don't have a strong math background (and even if u do), beware.
This class is bonkers. Probably one of the hardest undergrad math classes at USC. Highly recommend that you have some familiarity with topology, analysis, and group theory (410, 425a, 440) so as to truly appreciate the rigor and complexity of this course in establishing the extraordinary results that it does. Dreyer's lectures are also quite good.
A VERY bad math teacher. This is supposed to be a 100 level business math class, and the guy teaches it like it's a high level engineering math class. Lectures make no sense. Homework is nothing like the tests. All tests and quizzes are beyond difficult, expect to fail. SUPER HARD class. Do NOT take him unless you are an incredible math student.
Not a good teacher and grades terribly.
There's a reason why his score is so low. Weekly quizzes, extremely difficult midterms/finals, and not at all receptive to feedback. Many times classmates and I tried to discuss our concerns but he was stubborn and instead blamed it on our lack of studying. I did very well in hs calc but this prof made everything overcomplicated and difficult.
Easily the worst and hardest class I have ever taken at USC. He was not helpful and whenever concerns about the class were brought up by classmates, he would blame students and tell them they were not studying enough. Quizzes and tests do not reflect material that was covered in lectures. Tough grader and a bad professor. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Do NOT take Dreyer unless you have a very strong math background, like superhuman. I love math but ended up switching profs along with four classmates. He's very intelligent but does not respond to emails, blames students for poor grades, and makes calc much harder than it needs to be. You'll learn a lot but it will come at the expense of your GPA.
Math 118 is a very hard class at USC no matter the professor. However, Dreyer was never accommodating and taught the bare minimum during the lectures. As a result, the quizzes and midterms were way harder and not reflective of what we learned in class at all. Did well in AP Calc but still had a C- before the final so I ended up taking it pass/fail.
Hes insanely tough, doesnt take feedback well, blames his students for poor results. The AVG on exam1 was 40%, he blamed his students for not studying enough. Said he doesnt understand how ppl who failed his test are at USC, we dont deserve to be in STEM, and we should go back to first grade math. His quizzes are impossible to finish, beware.
Avoid at all costs. Although hes a smart professor and usually available through office hours, he is the hardest professor Ive ever taken and can be very rude/condescending. Class is entirely creative math, if youre not that good at math, youll be done for. Went in thinking I could scrape by, regretting my decisions. Avoid him !!
I was always pretty good at math and enjoyed it. I got a 5 on my ap calc exam and took BC calc in high school and qualified on the exam. That being said calc 126 was the worst class I've taken at USC. I had to withdraw from this class because I wasn't going to pass. Dreyer is condescending and although passionate, horrible at teaching. Beware!!
I've always loved math. This guy made me hate the subject as a whole. Snobbish person. Extremely hard tests and quizzes with unrealistic expectations. This class had the highest drop out number and p/np takers. Avoid him at all costs.
He has so many low reviews for a reason, worst professor Ive ever had in my college experience. Unrealistic expectations and should be more understanding/lenient with students. Hoping he will improve. He is generally nice, but very very tough. Avoid him
His class was such a horrible experience I needed to drop, he is so confusing and gives the hardest exams ever. He also belittles you if you do bad on exams, even though a professor should help you and not make you feel worse for doing bad on an exam. Ended up dropping bc i couldn't stand taking such a horrible professor. stay away, seriously!
An okay prof, hard, but not that horrible. Quizzes and tests are unnecessarily difficult but he said that he meant to do that. The class is curved fine. The only issue is that he never provides answers.
I should have listened to RMP before taking this class. Hardest I've ever worked. Extensive hours of studying, got tutoring, went to office hours, joined study groups and I still failed. Impossible quizzes, low test averages, long homework. Obviously smart classmate was killing the quizzes but failed midterm bc of unclear grading.
very confusing/couldnt explain himself at times.
Not sure why the reviews here are so negative. The problems on the tests/quizzes are slightly harder than the examples in class, but the class is curved so you're not doing as poorly as you think you might be. My 68% on the first midterm got bumped up to a 98% post-curve; on the second the curve was similar. He's also pretty funny sometimes imo
The first thing Giom said on the first day was "I'm gonna make you work hard". He made us work hard. However, I put the time in and can defitnetly say that I learned a lot and am better at math now.
Professor Dreyer will prepare you very well for the final exam. You just have to work hard. The class is curved, so you're doing better than you think you are. He's a funny dude too
Professor Dreyer does not deserve the rating he has. His class is very difficult at the beginning, but once you realize how he teaches, it is not difficult. He's very straight forward and prepares you very well for the final. There are weekly quizzes, and if you go to class and study the example problems from class, you'll do well. He's a funny guy
Makes you work hard, especially early in the semester, but this prepares you well for the final. So long as you spend 15-20 mins reviewing after each lecture, you'll be fine, even with minimal studying outside of that. I studied about 2-3 hours weekly outside of class and that was enough. Quiz/test questions can be hard, but the curve bails you out
There are quizzes every week which means studying for hours every week. The final exam was what tanked my grade . Concepts are taught to you but nothing extensive. Quiz and exam questions do not reflect sample problems done in class. TA was extremely helpful.
Professor Dreyer's class is not an easy class at all. If you have the opportunity to take another professor, take it. I had to study so hard for the final just to pass the class and he grades the midterms really hard. He expects you to complete problems a certain way and if you don't, he takes points off. Very hard class and not my favorite prof.
This is by far the hardest class I've taken here at USC. Prof. Dreyer's explanations are terrible-forcing me to learn material on my own. His quizzes are nearly impossible to do well in. His TA is ahem not very good either. This class gave me hella stress/anxiety/depression/hopelessness/hatred towards math and stem/and a hatred toward the math dept
Confusing lecturer, does a worse job than my high school AP stats teacher. He preaches about having high standards, but then we need to correct him numerous times during lectures because he can't stop making mistakes. Whenever we ask him some harder questions, he says "Oh I can't figure this out on the board." Then why are you teaching here?
It's supposed to be an easy course compared to other cal classes I've taken here, uhhh the only thing that sets apart from other classes is just confusing lectures. He does not follow textbook's order, and it seems like he's bragging about his math skill. Don't take unless you have no other choices!!!
I have taken multiple courses with Professor Dreyer, and he is tough. I spent hours on homework assignments and preparing for exams. However, I have learned more in his courses than I have in any other math course. If you like math and are willing to work hard, Professor Dreyer will take you on an incredible, fascinating journey through math.
Lectures are mid. Exams and quizzes are insanely hard.
I took this intro level class in 2018. Now, I'm a math PhD candidate at another university in the US. When I recalled the day with this guy, it is a disaster. I would like to give him a 0 rate if I can. This course costed me $8000 and I want to demand a refund of the tuition. He's not serious about teaching, and he didn't intend to teach.
Not a mean guy, just a really bad teacher. Unable to explain well, partly because he is not fluent in English. Ended every lecture (not exaggerating) 5-10 minutes late, and the HW sets were completely divorced from lectures. Discussion sections were taught by a TA who was even more incompetent than Dreyer, Elif Uskuplu. Take at your own peril.
His class was horrible. I struggled so much and received no support from Dreyer. He expects more from his students than himself and cannot answer questions. He cites that "students are more trained" than him. He also belittled and made comments about my background.
Not sure what other reviews mean by "test was nothing like in-class material." Every problem on midterms/finals was exactly from lectures or discussions (shout out GOAT TA Vlad!) maybe with numbers changed (sometimes not even that). Attend class, ask questions, and read the textbook as always. Dreyer is very knowledgeable and available!
absolutely brilliant linear algebra lecturer + the best lecturer ive had at usc. tbh i was scared to take the class bc of the reviews, and even though his grading criteria is a bit unclear, he is an extremely fair grader. generous curver too. you'll come out on the other end with an incredibly solid understanding of linear algebra
Avoid at all costs, definitely not worth taking especially when there are much better teachers to take
Avoid at all cost. Most confusing professor in the department. Does not care about students. TA does not know what the professor is up to. Only a few students can follow what he is saying. You should consider if will become one of them.
If you are taking MATH225, never take him. I know that he cares about students a lot, but the way he teaches, the way he requires proof, and the particular way of writing answers will make you suffer. Weekly homework and weekly quizzes are doable but require you to self-study more than you possibly can.
Please avoid at all costs! Awful lecturer, tests and quizzes irrelevant to lectures, if you are not a math genius you are going to suffer in this class
Definitely one of the most difficult courses I've ever taken; however, if you love math and you go to lecture and do the work, you will walk out of that class with more knowledge than anyone else taking 225. If you go to lecture, you'll be fine. Skip lecture, and you're screwed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! Makes all content way more difficult than it should be. Homework is only 4% and takes loads of time. Weekly quizzes which are extremely stressful and time-constrained. Homework overall doesn't correlate to quizzes and tests, and notes are illegible. Way better professors I would not take this class under any circumstances.
Dreyer is clearly passionate about math and he's a fun lecturer (unless you can't read cursive), but I truly cannot recommend taking a class with him. I regret taking MATH-225 this semester instead of at a CC or with a different prof. in a future semester, as many of my friends did purely to avoid Dreyer. His content is extremely difficult.
He is a decent person and means well, but I would not recommend. He lectures very fast & he prioritizes covering as much content as possible rather than truly explaining topics in detail. Weekly homework & quizzes, homework is worth very little and rarely aligned with quiz material. 2 midterms + final, all curved. Must be able to read cursive.
You need to know everything like the back of your hand and clearly communicate in extreme time pressure. The quizzes are very hard, and the midterms/finals are even harder. Enthusiastic and helpful lectures, which you essentially need to go to to pass. Before you take his class, be ware of the rigor, but if you do, you will get a lot out of it.
Extremely difficult class, there was no syllabus or clear guidelines for what he expected. graded only on 4 assignments that have very vague instructions, but if you don't do exactly what he wants you will get bad grades. I went to office hours for help on an assignment and included exactly what he told me to include and I still failed it.
Great professor, but the class is just way too hard for what it is. Made more difficult by the insistence that the textbook is "wrong" and that we must use his method to do things. Would take again for sure though based off of his great lectures and accessibility during office hours.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had at USC. The other aspects of this course are messy tho. He never gave us previous exams and quizzes. All tests and quizzes are challenging. You have to attend his lectures and solve problems in his specific way to get good grades. If you are not confident about your math skills, I'd recommend to avoid him.
Guillaume's class is extremely difficult- probably the hardest out of all 226/229. Lectures and discussions are mandatory, as he will not share notes and will test on specifics mentioned in class. Weekly quizzes are insanely difficult but are a good reality check. He is very passionate about what he is doing and will push you to be the best.
RUN! This professor scribbles in messy cursive. He gives you nothing to use as practice material. Makes quizzes and exams unnecessarily long and difficult and not enough time for you to finish. The material is difficult but he makes it worse. Other professors teach the class much better. Avoid at all costs!
DO NOT TAKE CALC 3 WITH HIM!!!! He was so fast paced and taught like we knew everything and it was just a review. So hard to understand him and his teaching style. Had to drop this class because I got 3/15 on the first few quizzes. Do not take with him if you want to have a good life!
Guillaume is a great professor, though his quizzes and exams are absolutely horrible. They are hard to complete within the time well, and his TA rushes through discussions in order to give us enough time. In turn the discussion doesn't serve its purpose and then we are rushed for the quizzes. If you have a light load it could be manageable.
Only take this class if you want to give yourself a free headache. A good lecturer of its material, but his notes and the textbook are not even close to the quizzes and the dreadful exams which are too complicated for only having 50 minutes. His cursive writing is somehow even more sloppy than how my French teacher writes in high school.
Thought I was doing bad at the beginning of the semester (5/15s on the first 4 quizzes, 50 on the midterm) but I'm walking out with an A- curved. He doesn't give any details on the curve until the first midterm though. Tests are hard but not herculean. He is very caring though if you ask questions after lecture, and he wants you to learn it.
Avoid his class at all costs. He gives very vague answers in office hours. He will always tell you to go read the textbook if you're confused. He does not communicate any information about the curve until there are 4 weeks left in the semester. I have never left a rating on rate my professor, this is my first one. Do NOT take his class!!!
Overall this class is incredibly hard. I averaged 7/15 on the quizzes and the midterms get curved heavily. Be prepared to do badly and continue to learn. He is incredibly fair with the curve which makes up for the low quiz scores. Fantastic teacher who is clearly passionate about math and making sure you learn but not without stumbling.
Guillaume is a very smart guy and clearly has passion for mathematics. However, he is a sloppy lecture, gives unnecessarily long homework, and gives weekly quizzes that have nothing to do with the lectures or homework. I emailed him one to set up a meeting and he never responded and I regret taking this as an intro course.
I would 1000% not recommend taking his class. I stopped going to lectures after the first midterm and by the second one, although I had a lot of catching up to do, I did A LOT better (almost doubled my grade). Prepare to teach yourself, cause personally every time I went to the lectures I just ended up leaving more confused than I was when I went.
He will catch you if you use your phone in the class.
A lot of people don't like him but if you go to office hours it's pretty easy. The course (calc 3) was just somewhat hard and the math dept here is just bad overall. I think it also depends on your TA to some extent. Overall just show up to class.
I dont understand the bad ratings. Giom is a great professor who is really good at explaining things in an engaging way. Quizzes and exams are hard and based on examples he gives in class but he curves it heavily. If you go to lectures and discussion you will definitely do well and learn a lot.
I think my roomate's two brother could teach calculus better. He might as well be a two year old with his frequent temper tantrums and his habit of throwing markers. He "teaches" like everyone in the room has had years of calculus experience instead of being in calculus one. Save yourself and take anyone else. If I could rate him a -10, I would.
Imagine the worst professor you could and multiply that by a thousand.
His lectures are really sloppy, but he appreciates if you show up for the lectures and will be a lot nicer to you if you do. He gives way too much homework and half of it doesn't have to do with what's in the lecture. His tests are heavily curved though and he'll change the weighting of midterms/quizzes based on how well you do on them
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE THIS DUDE. This is quite literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He says that showing work will give you partial credit but this is a total lie. There is a weekly quiz that is so hard none of the studying you can do online will help you. SPARE YOURSELF PLEASE.
Dreyer is an insanely tough grader, he's clearly very passionate about math but that's definitely one of the reasons why his class is so difficult. He wants you to clearly outline the steps you took to solve a problem but won't give you partial credit if you do so it kind of seems pointless. He'll often go on rants about how bad your class is doing
Guillaume clearly has a passion for math, and he is a nice guy. But the way he teaches this class is horrible. He doesn't use Brightspace, he provides no resources, and the tests and quizzes are impossible. The hours of tedious homework alone made me hate this class, and there are zero resources besides your TA, and you'd better get lucky.
Don't choose any courses of this professor. What he teaches in class is very vague. The homework is almost irrelevant to what he teaches. The weekly quizzes and exams are very difficult and the grading is very strict.
Class wasn't hard he just wasn't the best instructor. He is nice and some of the things he teaches he does well, but overall I don't think I really learned from him.
Do not take this class. Worst professor I've had. I went to almost all lectures, sat in front, and attended almost all office hours until an uncomfortable encounter that felt discriminatory. Despite all my effort, he doesn't care about students. Grading is harsh even if answers are right. Quizzes are hard and very annoying. Avoid this class.
Lectures are rough to some, but he is someone who cares about the subject being taught. Will go into lengths in explaining concepts if you ask him.
Professor is a likeable person and clearly cares about math but is not ideal for Calc II, which is already difficult on its own. Lectures are not very clear or well structured, with certain topics frequently being rushed over. Homework is extensive, often not adequately preparing students for exams. If you are not a math person, do not choose him.
