He is patient. He will walk you through all the concept with a relatively easy way. He wants you to think, to understand, not just to memorize.
One of the best Organic Chemistry professors at Brooklyn College. Knows how to teach. Exams are fair and he really breaks down the material in a way that a student can understand. The only people that fail his class are the ones that would fail under any Organic chem professor.
I did not expect a teacher of this caliber when I first walked into this class. Clear, intelligent, helpful, fair; all of which describe Professor Navarro. His exams by no mean were easy, but Organic Chemistry is simply difficult! He taught well enough to make it seem like a cake walk. Go to class put some effort and thank the heavens for Navvaro.
He must be writing his own reviews, otherwise the three reviews prior to this one are probably the only three students left in his course. 90% of the students dropped. Take that as a warning. Make sure you study.
The worst of the worst. Never in my life have I had such a careless professor. His goal is for you to fail. He is by no means lenient with his grading. His lectures are boring!! Time drags on and people lose interest immediately. He should not be teaching such an important college level course. You've been warned!
Very good professor. I did not enjoy organic chemistry but navvro does his best to teach you it. Orgo is not easy so of course people do poorly. However, the people who put no effort do poorly.
Good professor. Exams were difficult if you just try to memorize. First test was mostly on reactions and mechanisms--like 80% of the exam and 100% of the second exam; he really likes them.
Just say his name on campus and you'll get a review on him, even from students who didn't have him. Orgo isn't a easy class that you can master on your own. You need to do your work but also have a good professor to guide you, which he is not. His slides are horrible, his lectures are fast, and his test are killers. Take him on your own will.
It's not hard to find out how many dropped his class. It was not that his exams were too bad, but how unreasonable he was. His first test average was a 33.5 and the second one was 44.5. He believed it was enough of a jump to not curve at all and fail anyone who got under a 70. Anyone in the 60's was to get a C- or C+ with high recitation.
He's OK but he's curving is HORRIBLE!! The average is an F NOT a C -_-.I got a 46 on the first exam, then a 79 then a 74ish on the final. Got a B. You have to work hard and watch freelanceteach videos. Without those videos, I would not have passed! Dont fall behind!!!
Honestly, compared to other organic chem professors, he is very clear in lecture. If you read ahead, or at least have an inkling of the topic that is going to be covered already, he is quite easy to follow. He is always there to help, and he does not mind clarifying things for you. His exams are pretty straightforward. Do textbookrecitation proble
very hard, unclear exams, and lectures are bad
He goes through unclear slides at the speed of light, and teaches as though the whole class is already an expert in organic chemistry, and that he's just reminding us of it. Doesn't explain everything. Gives practice problems that are nothing like the tests, which are so much harder. Horrible overall.
He does not ask questions that he did not mention in class, so do yourself a favor and attend the lectures. No need to study things that he never mentioned in class. Quizzes are relatively easy, but exams are tough and insanely long.
If you're diligent- read the textbook periodically, do the problems at the end of the chapter, attend lecture, and study study STUDY, there is no reason to be afraid. Don't blow off lectures- it'll hurt you in the long run. He's a great guy and willing to help as long as you put in the work. This class is not an easy A but it's manageable!
Honestly, he is a very good professor. He devotes his time to making you understand every aspect of the subject. i appreciate having him because he taught me the importance of understanding concepts rather than memorizing. His tests are very fair and doable. The subject is hard and you have to put in effort but I am grateful for an amazing semester
Very harsh grader. Pulls questions out of nowhere, with them being so hard and undoable in a time only for the test. Not very warm or seems willing to help. He talks fast, moves fast, and does everything way to quickly to understand orgo 1. didnt have a choice, so i had to take it, but if you have a choice skip!
AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!!! So difficult and rushes so much during lecture and recitation. This is a very bad, bad intro to orgo, as it is a very interesting subject. I was fortunate to have a tutor who passionately taught me the subject, but if you have to suffer with him alone, it's so difficult. You must devote all your waking hours to studying. BAD!
He smart and hot, but that's about it. Zooming through topics and not mentioning important things, he assumes you know it or will figure it out on your own. Tests are HORRIFIC! As much as you study, you'll find questions you never saw in your life. Orgo is hard enough, with him it's simply impossible. Dedicated my life this class, still no results.
I wouldn't worry. He's a great guy and teacher and exams are extremely easy - not a bad or good thing, but study, do his assigned problem sets, and don't miss class. It's pretty interesting material, enjoy.
One of the best professors I ever had. Very smart guy, great lectures and very helpful. Orgo 1 is not an easy class but he makes it very interesting. Study really hard, do your homework regularly, look for help if you struggle and you will be ok. Most people in our class loved him, it was really an amazing semester !
some comments are not true because I was his student. He smart and tough grader and he is never available.
The class is quite challenging but he is very intelligent and a great lecturer. You must study very hard, he pushes you to think and reason, never memorize anything ! Always available, I personally could not make it to his office hours and he was always available to make an appointment at some other times during the week. great guy overall
To be fair to Prof. Navarro organic chemistry is a tough subject whoever teaches it. He is extremely intelligent and knows his stuff. However, he sometimes expects that just because you read the textbook you know everything. He rushes lectures but his tests are fair, except maybe the last question of every test which seems designed to knock you off
i'd shoot myself 7 times up the ass before taking him again. he seems like a nice guy but a horrible professor.
Where do I start? First thing this man does not now how to teach. He comes into class and jumps between chspters. He is very unclear on his exams. However if you go to his office hours he's very helpful. Overall he made me hate organic chemistry. If you can take class I'm summer or epermit. Not worth it to stick around.
He's an amazing professor for Orgo 1. He's intelligent and kind, and always wants to help. Orgo is not an easy class to teach, people expect so much from one man. You must read the book and do homework problems for your own good. His exams are not tough if you know the material. It was truly an amazing semester
He is the worst professor brooklyn college could offer, he cannot teach organic chemistry. goes over 1 thing then tests u on 30 other, no review no help BE READY TO LEARN IT ALL BY URSELF. Brooklyn college should hire someone who knows how to teach it to its students especially when the students are taking 2 other major classes quizzes are not fair
I really loved his class, brilliant guy, amazing lectures and very fair. He is the best prof I have had at BC by far. The class is hard, you must attend to all his lectures and study hard every week, but if you do it it will be worth it. This is certainly not a class to study 2-3 days before an exam. I feel I learned a lot from him
OK. lectures he runs right through with out a care in the world. he does have office hours but get there early (there will be a line) quizzes are fair however the exams are not. He only goes over in lecture and quizzes medium difficulty questions however on the exams the questions are expert level.
Prof. Navarro is a really nice guy and is caring when you go to his office hours. However, once you mess up he won't help you bc it is a competitive class (which is normal). Key to success: DO ALL OF HIS PROBLEM SETS - the exam qs will be very similar! Learn the material in the klein textbook and do the problems in back of the assigned textbook. GL
Came to the class scared as hell and he really surprised me. Very, very smart and nice guy. Dont miss lectures, read the book, solve all the problems he gives, study hard ! Go to his office hours, he is amazing at explaining things and cares a lot, we went over my first exam together and that helped me tons, got a lot of great advise from him
Not the warmest professor I've ever had, but you learn a lot if you pay attention and take copious notes from the textbook. If you've studied, quizzes are a breeze; problem sets he posts are easier than the tests themselves. If you want to take this class, just be prepared to work. Also, he looks exactly like Fred Armisen.
For orgo 2, recitation quizzes are now equalized between sections so ignore anything about difficulty and pick a professor who will TEACH. Navarro was great at teaching recitation sessions. He wasn't very involved in terms of giving you tons of problem sets to practice with like Horowitz does, but he is open to helping people during office hours.
Honestly, such a great and kind professor. Truly cared about his students and their ability to learn. His quizzes are easy and his exams are fair if you truly apply yourself and study enough. I high recommend him. From the start, he has been nothing but helpful to me.
Please take this professor for orgo 1. He is nothing but a true professor. He cares so much about his students and will do anything to go out his way to help his students pass!!
It doesnt get any better than Navaro. All chem professors in BC are trash but hes the best of the worst because he rushes every chapter. However tests are not that that difficult. Tests arent curved but the course is curved. Overall 80 and higher A. He's your best bet
his exams are really hard. Final was crazy
He makes this class so hard. He gives practice problems, but when it comes to the exams and quizzes, the questions are difficult. The final was unbelievable. It's like he designs this class for students to do badly. He does not seem to care. Someone else should not be teaching this course. I would not recommend this professor.
Honestly if you can't handle Navarro you shouldnt be pre anything. Test are fair, the final was easy, quiz are easy. He is the first professor that cares about his students. He can actual teach well. His lectures on reactions were ok but chirality and NMR were really good. Great teacher and these bad rating are from honestly lazy students .
Organic Chemistry is hard. He has a loud, urgent voice that is kind of scary. I'm sure he's brilliant, but he doesn't know how to teach. Draws on a tablet that gets projected on the screen but it's very difficult to read his handwriting, and he rushes through topics so quickly. You must get help outside of class, read and DO NOT FALL BEHIND.
he is the absolute worst professor in the school, along with his "recitation" profs which are an exact copy of him. Brooklyn college recruits science professors out of a garbage can honestly.
Prof Navarro is tough but there's a reason why he's the way he is. He expects you to study on your own and not rely on him for teaching. If you read before and after his lectures then you are GOOD! He follows the txtbook very closely. Honestly, even if I don't get a good grade @least I learned something about myself. BTW he's so cute and sexy ;-)
Best professor I have had so far at BC. He is really smart and a nice guy, go to his office hours if you need help. This is not a class to get an easy A, I guess thats why some people dont like him. Exams are fair and quizzes are easy. If you work hard and want to learn, and someone who cares for his students, take him.
Exams are extremely hard for no reaseon
tough class but he is the best you can get, fair and very organized. Very smart and approachable. I loved the analytical approach of his teaching style, great chalk talks and he gives you access to the slides on blackboard.
Prof Navarro has a very logically approach in the way he teaches organic chemistry. He shows you how to solve a problem through reasoning. He's a great lecturer and very accessible outside of class. Go to office hours if you have any questions. My best advice is to read the textbook before lecture. Prepare to put a lot of time into this class.
Navarro is brilliant, but makes you work for your grade. If you read the textbook before and after class you will be totally fine. Never skip his lectures. Once you are prepared they are really great. He is very fair and you can tell he loves teaching. I enjoyed his class very much
Terrible professor, his notes on the board are usually all over the place and going to his lecture is a waste of time. You are better off teaching yourself the material , ( which is recommended for Orgo). His exams are really hard.
Navarro is a good lecturer, but he talks fast and doesn't really like answering questions. Read the textbook before class + really understand his lectures, it will be on the test. His exams are HARD, but if you put in the time to study, you can do well. Also quizzes can save you, I messed up on them which separated my B from my friend's A
Such a hard class, class is all tests and quizzes and his tests are crazy hard! Dont take him.
This class was so damn hard! Yes, it's fair because he tests you on most of the things he said he will. However, every single section from the chapters are covered. You will be flooding with the amount of information you need to know. If you have a job or other science classes, don't take him because you will struggle a lot.
do not take him, simple as that. he rushes through the material and expects you to teach yourself.
Navarro is the best science professor that I have had so far. He is really smart and a great lecturer. He rarely uses slides and has a very logical approach to his teaching. He does makes you work hard and you must study consistently to do well. He is very fair and clearly very passionate about orgo chem, he knows the subject incredibly well.
The WORST, I repeat... the absolute WORST professor that I have ever dealt with. You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING from the textbook, don't expect him to teach you anything. He only zooms through problems during lecture and thinks everyone gets it. Especially those last two weeks were rough, bombarded us with exams and quizzes. WOULD NOT TAKEEE
This class completely effed me academically. He does his best to try to get the concept across but his exams are difficult. Made45% passing and half the kids still failed. A lot of the people who passed took a tutor outside of the class so I would recommend that. Didn't get my exam grade till AFTER drop date. It's orgo tho and my friends didget A's
Navarro is really smart and a fantastic lecturer. This is a highly demanding subject that needs a lot of work outside of the class. If you do that, its not difficult to do well, def not a class for people thinking of just coming to class and getting an A. I felt he was really fair and taught me a lot to think and study, i enjoyed his class very much
Cant stress enough how horrible this class was with him. Please just save your time, money and energy and take orgo with literally anyone else. Lectures do not make any sense. He rushes through everything and his exams are RIDICULOUS.
Navarro is great, fair and a professor who cares for his students. If you actually want to learn something take him, but if you expect not to study out of class, then dont take org chem, no matter who teaches it. He is a very smart guy and know the subject so well, never used slides, which I loved. Lectures are really helpful
I think a lot of the reviews here are quite harsh u do have to put in the effort for his class his teaching method is doing alot of q, which works for some but not for others. in the end, the key to doing well in orgo is doing practice qs over and over again. didn't like the way he bombarded us with so many quizzes and tests the last 2 weeks tho
Had him for the chemial reactvity /pre-orgo class. Lectures are clear, he explains concepts well. I'm in Orgo 2 now and I'm still referencing the notes I took in this class for basic refreshers. Exams are fine if you've been paying attention and practicing problems. He really set a solid conceptual foundation for higher level organic chem.
Little to no partial credit on exams. The entire semester he has put things on the exams that he said he wouldn't put or things that have not been taught. Practice problems during class on a scale of difficulty from 1-10 are a 2 and then an 11 on the exam.
Terrible, the worst instructor that I had. Teaches organic chemistry from the power points doesn't solve any problem in the class. IF you think that his exams are difficult you are right, but wait until the final is just impossible to solve even if it is not timed. Please avoid taking him. Your college experience will be ruined and you'll hate it.
I took Navarro for Organic Chem 1 Lecture. One of the most distasteful, discouraging courses I have ever experienced as a senior at Brooklyn College. Unfortunate for someone to have so much potential in the sciences but lack the soul as a successful professor. Never again.
Took him for Organic 1 lectures. He was really amazing, extremely knowledgable of the subject and great lecturer as well. The class is hard and you have to study regularly a lot, but his lectures were super helpful and clear. He is a very smart and gives you a lot of resources to study. Don't expect an easy A, you gotta work hard for your grade.
exams are IMPOSSIBLE to do well. Average of class was literally a fail. Even if you know orgo well his exams are hard. its long answers style, not multiple choice. Do yourself a favor and take it a semester that someone else teaches. He is accessible outside of class so that's a plus.
By all means I performed well on exams, and got one of the highest scores in the class so this review isn't framed around receiving a low grade. Critical information is left out of lectures and you aren't allowed to review your exams or get feedback whatsoever. Slow and unresponsive grader, with an unclear scale/rubric for the class. Avoid him.
Lectures were great and he provided us with a lot of material to study all semester along. This is not an easy class, I had to study a lot ! Exams were fair, he really knows the material exceptionally well , very approachable outside class. One of the best professors that I have had so far at BC.
He is the best professor that I have had at BC so far. Very patient, he does not use slides, just explains everything methodically on the board, he is a really smart guy. Also he is giving us problems for every chapter and recorded lectures which is of great help to study. Highly recommend him !
Great Professor, he doesnt use slides, only teaches on the board, very logical style. He is very smart and funny. Exams are not easy but if you follow his lectures and work on his practice problems you should do well. I found very useful to attend to his office hours, he was very approachable and helpful. I wish I had him for orgo 2 as well !
He tries to teach. However, there are many cons to his method and quality of instruction. He speaks way too fast for a course that is so advanced and requires deep understanding of topics. He does not explain topics well. He did not give us the solution to the homework problems.
Prof Navarro was really great, he is a very smart and knows the material incredibly well. He is very also passionate about Orgo Chem. His teaching style is very logical. He was very approachable during office hours and his tests were quite fair. To do well you need to stay on top of the material since day 1. I will definitely miss him in organic 2.
He recently started posting youtube videos which were very helpful to watch after a lecture because they solidified my understanding of a theory or lesson. If you ask he makes online office hours before an exam, as well as an in-person one. You should go to class as he doesn't post slides, and he also answers your questions thoroughly.
Avoid this professor, despite him being the most readily available during regular semesters. You are much better off taking this course, somewhere else. He knows in orgo but cannot simplify it to communicate his message; his tests are awful. To give you an example, Fall/Spring average for test 1 was around 50s while summer semester was in 70s.
navarros teaching style wasnt for me, but his tests are pretty straightforward, no tricks. you learn the first third of orgo 1 in this class. final is cumulative, so be on top of everything you learned. better than taking laura juszczak
AWFUL. He goes so fast and there are no slides so easy to get lost. He doesn't prepare you. His exam review didnt come with answers so it wasn't helpful..Each exam is worth a lot. (30%,30%,40%) Not helpful if you are not doing well and rude.
Navarro is the best chemistry professor I ever had. He has great passion for teaching and for organic chemistry. Amazing lectures. I loved his logical teaching style. The class is not easy and you have to study a lot but his classes were incredibly helpful, dont miss a class ! I will miss him badly in organic 2
Honestly the best organic chemistry professor, incredibly kind and empathetic towards students. He genuinely wants you to succeed. Take advantage of his office hours he is very accessible. It is a hard class you have to study from day one, and the material builds on itself. He explains concepts very well
Navarro is the best lecturer I have had at Brooklyn College, he is incredibly knowledgable and he really cares for his students. I attended to his office hours regularly and that made a big difference. The class is not easy and you will have to study hard but if you work on the problems he provides you should do well in his exams.
Came in deathly afraid of Orgo as someone who sucked at gen chem and barely survived pre-orgo, but ended with an A-! His exams are hard, but he does a good job preparing you (coming from someone who rarely attended lectures). GO TO OFFICE HRS.Taught me how to thoroughly analyze and understand Ochem.
he teaches well but hes not accessible at all and doesn't care ab the students doesn't wanna help or anything
Extremely rude. Claims he cares about his students, but when emailing or coming to him for help, he will judge you and make u feel dumb. explained reactions terribly. 0/10 avoid him at all costs
Best professor I have had at Brooklyn College so far. His lectures are very useful, the class is intense and run fast. He is super helpful if you go to his office hours. Great experience, i will miss him badly in organic 2 !
Overall challenging class. Expect to devote 4-5 hours after each lecture to solidify the material. This course was TOUGH, and extremely time consuming. The exams were on the "difficult" side. Study HARD, always remember why you are taking this course, and you will DESTROY this class. Think clearly on the exams, because they are made to TRICK you.
The class is hard, you need to study at least 5-7 hours per week average. Lectures were very helpful, he knows the material really well and he is really a great lecturer, very logical, organized and clear. I would also recommend attending to office hours, there were usually a lot of people waiting but he made time for everybody and it was worth it
He is a great professor for understanding ochem. All of his lectures make everything piece together really nicely so I would highly suggest attending to get a grasp on the material. This class is difficult solely because you REALLY have to understand it and practice. (P.S. his preorgo class is actually really helpful for this class)
Would provide practice for Ochem but little to no solutions. I brought it up he suggested that I should've come to his office hours to get them corrected, which was quite inconsiderate since I had other classes during that time. Also lectures were a little pointless since I taught myself everything anyway. Office hours did help though.
I loved him, he knows the material very well and his a great lecturer really. Very smart guy, no slides in class, just him teaching the material, reactions etc on the board, which I appreciated a lot. You do have to pay close attention though. I attended office hours regularly and it was very helpful.
Firstly, during the lecture he goes extremely fast. If you ask questions, he makes you feel dumb. In addition his favorite word to use when explaining is “obviously”. Secondly, if you go to office hours, he will “lecture” you about ur study habits instead of helping you understand a question. Thirdly, he provides practice but with no answer key.
Great lectures and very helpful if you go to office hours. Very smart and really cares for his students, the course is very challenging but overall it was a great experience for me. You need to study a lot, pretty much every week.
Loved the class, he is really a great professor and explains things very very well. Dont miss lectures ! Going to his office hours helped me a lot.
hes just terrible
He does not tolerate disrespect so beware. But ultimately he wants you to do your best, ask questions, and encourages you to work hard and come to office hours. He can be kind but he also does not play, take this class and him seriously and you will pass. Ask questions, he doesn't use powerpoint he just explains examples he writes on the board.
First professor I've had who teaches out of his brain, no ppt slides, no papers, nothing, insane how he can do that, especially on this subject. Lectures are very organized, his teaches you to reason the topic never to memorize it. He is brilliant and also quite serious about discipline in class. Very helpful and kind in office hours.
Doesn't know how to teach. The class is already hard but he makes it ten times harder than it needs to be. You have to read the textbook and teach yourself everything. He expects you to know everything from the get go. If your go to his office hours with a question he will be rude to you. The exams were confusing and the assignments made no sense.
If you are deeply interested in and love Ochem this is the professor for you. He's knowledgable, will go over everything as much as you need and keeps his office hours going if ppl are there. BUT if you don't love chem, he aint it for you. He's a very tough grader and expects you to KNOW this subject inside and out. Wait a semester and take Mohd.
He is really great and incredibly helpful in office hours. Do not miss lectures and work on the problems he provides. The class is not easy but he is an amazing professor and teaches the class very well. Prepare to study a lot every week. Exams are not hard if you are well prepared, he does gives a lot of partial credits.
He is the best ! Very smart, funny and a such great professor. Make sure you work and understand the problem sets that he provides. I am very happy to have him in organic 1 next semester. Highly recommend him.
Great professor, so helpful during office hours. He would never get annoyed with you asking questions and was always willing to help. Make sure we fully understand the topics, but exams can be tricky. Ensure you study well and ask questions!
Explains in a way that is very simple and helps you to understand concepts but can get too fast sometimes. As long as you pay attention in class and review notes you should be fine.
tells us to read the textbook but exams look completely different
The class in online asynchronous, he provided all the needed material well organized, but its up to you to do the independent work needed to do well . He made it very hard for people to cheat even using ai, which made some of my peers hate him, I am thankful for how generous he was with the grading, he is really a great professor !
Although his exams are difficult, prof. Navarro truly cares about his students. Go to his office hours and go to learning center for free tutoring. It will make a world of a difference. I definitely recommend, but get ready to work.
His lectures were amazing, its like he is telling you a story, i recommend attending both his morning and afternoon classes, it did wonders for me. Very approachable in office hours, he truly cares and is very helpful and kind. He is brilliant. Test were not easy but i do think they were fair and he was very generous grading.
Great professor who teaches well and explains everything clearly. Definitely make sure to come to every lecture. Exams are a bit tough, but if you study and put in the effort, you can succeed. Quizzes were pretty straightforward.
