By far the WORST teacher I have ever had, not only at mesa but in my LIFE. She was so unclear that I had no clue what had just happened when I left class. Very thick accent, changes her lesson plan every 5 seconds, HARD tests, and very unorganized. Very frustrating class, I failed and I have never failed a class. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
She cares about giving her students the chance to succeed, unfortunately, she hasn't mastered how to do it. Her accent and the "language barrier" make lectures hard to follow (Read the book & tests are easy), and fell WAY behind her syllabus. This was the only class I couldn't calculate my grade in since everything was changed at the last minute.
Worst teacher ive ever had in my life. She gets very defensive bc i dont think she can understand everything ppl are saying so she assumes that its bad things about her. If you're already enrolled in the class, im sorry that you must go through this. just read the book, its way easier.
omg shes SO AWESOME! shes a sweetheart! if i could take this class over again i SO would! you need the book to study from but otherwise her lectures are very helpful. take lots of notes and review them before exams. you'll get the hang of it after a while
She sounded awesome on the first day.. unfortunatley her classes were just lectures from a power point. I couldn't understand her, she really took out all of the interesting and exciting things about archaeology, for me. Try to take someone else because this class should be more fun.
Lectures are a waste of time because she reads from a power point which can be found on the textbook's website. I was interested in Archaeology before this class but now she has taken all of the life out of it. Don't take her unless you HAVE TO.
If you want a teacher who is really boring and disrespectful to the students than this is the teacher for you. I was at first really excited for this class, seeing arch. is going to be my minor...but after the first few weeks of class I realized that I was in for the most boring semester ever!!! If you like snoring and rudeness take her!
HORRIBLE TEACHER! She does not want you to do well in her class and I eventually had to drop because she does not go over the material at all. Save your money!
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. She does not know how to teach, and makes the subject more complex. You most likely are going to end up With a D or F. She purposely make student to fail. She is out there to play on student life. I don't think so she knows her profession. At the beginning, she seems a nice person,
I am usally a very good student and I am transfering to UCSD next year but I could not take her class. She is very unclear and does not know how to teach. She is the only teacher that I have had to drop in my college history. Worst Teacher I have ever had.
Terrible, just terrible... if not a little crazy. I have never had to try this hard to get myself to attend a class, and I still didn't make it about 50% of the time.
I took her both Physical and Cultural, both classes were great and Cultural Anthropology was fun. She is student friendly and understanding. I learned a lot in her classes. Extra Credit possible!! Take her.
I thought she was great. She is very knowledgeable and has much experience to be shared. Not an easy class by all means, but if you needed help all you had to do was ask. If you are up front with her, she will go out of her way to help. Also, a little effort goes a long way, it is important to her that her students are serious.
I took her summer class. She was great and very helpful. She provides study guide for each test, if you pay attention you will be fine! Graet class, recommended.
she is a very good teacher. knows what she talks about, i am happy that i didn't drop the class, i learned a lot from her even if i didn't ace the class. lol.
The lectures were uninteresting so most of the class didn't attend. She seemed nice but she wasn't clear at all on any of the assignments or tests. If you had a question, it was stressful because you never knew how she would react. Also, I never felt my questions were answered. Basically, if you want to be take a anthro. class go to someone else.
She was very helpful and eager to teach her students. Learning materials can be confusing but she made it very clear by breaking it down. If you do all your work and pay attention during lecture, you will be fine.
i think she is great and very helpful. If you interested in archaeology i recommend her class , her tests and assignments are not hard at all and I enjoyed.
Hi, everyone be careful this instructor, she still teach at mesa college Antho.102. I do not have any clue who she get hired by mesa college. She doesn't know how teach the material. At first she seems nice insstructor who knew the material, but I don't even have word to describe her. If register her class once agin be careful do not kill your JPA
This class really challenges you and she doesnt just hand out A's, you have to earn it. Using the study guide helps a lot, though it takes a couple of test to really benefit from it. I think the class was great and I learned a lot.
Very passionate about what she teaches. Read and follow the syllabus and you will get an A. Tests are very easy if you read the texts and know the key words and points. The more you participate in the class, the better you will do in the class.
Definitely recommend her!! Great class.
She was very helpful and knowledgeable. I really like the class. If you willing to work and get fair grade this is the class for you.
It was an interesting class. I didn't ace the it, but it was definitely worth taking. Read the material, take the quizzes, and do the projects as best as you can. If you don't do so hot on the exams, you can still pass the class. She is nice, and very willing to help out when you need it. I don't regret taking this class.
Horrible teacher!!!! Took her online class and she is VERY unclear. Late responses to e-mails. Delays with grades and really is out for a power trip on student life.
Interesting class. Horrible teacher. She is impossible. She made everything so boring.I had to withdraw from this class but when I took this class with another teacher and got an A. I go to UCSD now and I am so thankful to have interesting teachers.
I took two of her classes Archaeology and Physical Anthropology and I enjoyed both of them. I would recommend her.
I feel so much more knowledgeable after this class! She is a great teacher. Don't let those lousy comments below to scare you from taking her class. It's worth it.
Horrible, horrible teacher, she is not helpful at all if you can take it with somewhere else. if you don't have other options good luck she will make your life so hard.
Dinckan is not a good instructor, her instructions are unclear, if she does reply she very rude in her responses some people should not teach, and she is one of them BEWARE!
To be honest she is not the best and not the worst. I find the class pretty easy but she is very unclear on most things. If you ask her a question she usually proceeds to bite your head off and be very rude. If I wasnt interested in the class beforehand I would have hated life. If you take her class be prepared and good luck
Beware!! Protect you G.P.A.
I agree completely with the most of the other posts. She is rude and does not appear to enjoy teaching. She also does not engage with the students. why are you teaching Gulay Dinckan????
I see she is now teaching online at MiraCosta. I wonder if she will get the same negative reviews over there. All students beware! I would not recommend this instructor. The worst instuctor I have ever had.
Awful teacher. She took over my class when the original teacher unfortunately passed away. I realize that it must be difficult to take over a class after the semester has started. However, there is never a reason for a teacher to tell a student "I will not waste my time on you" when they were just asking for clarification on a topic. Run away!
Dont Take her. Very rude, she gets very angry if you ask a question. She makes you feel stupid. Dont Take Her!!
She can be hard to understand sometimes (turkish accent) but she really wants to help us pass. Let us use open book on our hardest exam, gave feedback on quizzes & even helped during tests. Gave plenty of extra credit opportunities too!
Make sure to take a look at her class load. The more classes she has the more stressed and careless she becomes. If you're not comfortable in your staus as a student she will be a very difficult professor to take, understand, and please. Be aware of the text(s) and keep your eyes on her, take notes and participate and you might survive.
The worst teacher i have ever had in two different schools. Removes points off because a student did not understand the problem, and when you ask for help she never answers you back until it is too late. Never follows her own rules, or syllabus.
This is a review for her online class. The instructor was helpful online, and answered some questions I had about a test quickly, and even asked me if I would like to retake the test because of a technical issue. The class is difficult though, so be prepared to work hard for a good grade.
One of the worst professors ever. She is unclear as to what she wants and is not willing to help. This class isn't simply difficult, you'd have to be a mind reader to understand what she wants. Her grammar and spelling are 5th grade level, yet she (incorrectly) attempts to correct mistakes on papers and projects. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!!
Ridiculously hard to understand. The class layout and expectations are extremely unclear. Her key thing to teach is to make inferences about EVERYTHING. Somebody else said "Protect your gpa"..I second that.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had.It seems like she intentionally makes assignments impossible to comprehend and then deducts points for you not reading the fine print.Exams are the worst;I read every chapter and did the extra readings and still only finished some exams with a minute to spare because she asks for too much detail.Hate her
WORST teacher I have ever had. Failed me by 1/2 a point. She is not clear about what she wants and gets mad when you ask her for clarification. HORRIBLE!
Horrible! Her grading is ridiculous. She knows her material but can't seem to teach it whatsoever. I recommend anyone who plans on taking Anthro 102 to not take her course. She treats the class as if they are children. She should not be teaching on the college level nor any other level of teaching.
Upon entering this course I was not interested physical anthropology whatsoever due to religious obligations. However, there is plenty of useful information. Her class is difficult, but if you apply yourself, there is no reason you cannot pass. I found she is an amazing professor, but may come off as tough. You are in college now, so act like it.
THIS CLASS WAS HARD! It supposed to be. Being online, there was a lot of reading and self studying involved. If you do the work, you will get a good grade. I got a C because I skated through. The content was fun, since I am an Anthro major. Even though it was hard, she critiqued my work and told me what I did wrong. I think she is a fair professor.
I am currently talking her Anth 107 class online and it is HORRIBLE. Besides the fact that the layout is so disorganized and scattered, she doesn't even have quality PowerPoint slides, they are literally all quotes from the book.. She grades very harshly on discussion boards which are like literally 5 points and she expects like research paper quality information when she doesn't make it clear from the beginning! Avoid her and take another teacher, save your GPA!
Terrible teacher! I went to every class and tried to learn the information, when I asked her for help and clarification she claimed that I was never involved and didn't pay attention in class. The tests are unbearable! Multiple choice A-E with most of the questions having answers such as just A and B or All of them. Hardest and worst teacher ever.
Its a hard class, but the professor made it easy and fun to understand the topics. She is knowledgeable and fair. I had a great experience taking this class and I recommend taking it with Prof. Dincan.
Discussion board posts may as well be full papers. Requires you to cite your sources (in a weird non-APA or MLA format I've never seen before) on DBs and if your responses are even remotely similar to other students' you'll be marked down. The subject is interesting, but the teacher is awful. I'll retake it with someone better.
She is the most disrespectful teacher I have ever had. To further clarify I spent seven years in the Army, where I took numerous courses and have never been talked down to, like I have in her class. So thats saying something. But if you do the work the class is not that hard. She did allow for the book to be used for one test and limited notes.
Hate it!
She recognizes if you put in the effort, and come to every class. She makes every effort to help you pass as she drops your worst test score, and offers extra credit. The tests got harder as the semester progressed, so you will have to study, but she will notice. She's very personable if you are respectful, and does whatever it takes to help you.
I loved this class. As long as you show up for class, pay attention (NO CELL PHONES) and be respectful and put in studying time/effort, you will pass. She is clear and gives the students plenty of opportunities to do well. No reason you should fail if you put in the effort.
This class requires maturity. If you take it seriously and give respect, you will succeed. There is great balance and credit on your side due to the fact that Prof. Dinckan will let you use notes, the book, class handouts, and past assignments to aid you in taking the exams. There is extra-credit and a research paper which will help you as well.
Professor is in-depth and gives you plenty of time to study for exams. There is a lot of material but she goes over that material pretty well during the lectures. Her lectures are tons more useful than the book so make sure you don't skip class unless it's an emergency. If you need help just ask. Extra credit opportunities are also there.
Out of my five classes I am taking this is the only class I didn't get an A. She expects outside research for all writing assignments even though she wont tell. The final did not go with the powerpoints or the book. On the final the true or false questions had numerous spelling errors so you didn't know if it was false or just a spelling error.
She took away all the benefits of taking a course online: withheld assignments until the week they were due, so you there was no way to work ahead. Tests were only available for 3 days mid-week. Took a long time to grade assignments, making it difficult to correct mistakes. No opportunity to review exams before the cumulative final.
Your overall grade is out of a couple hundred points, even missing a couple points an assignment will affect you. Few assignments. Very hard grader! Very little extra credit offered. You may not retake a test if you have internet problems. You get one chance. Very long tests, more than 4 answers, not enough time.
To let you know where I'm coming from, I'm about to get my Associates, and have taken 50 credits, both online and in-class. This was the worst class, and I've had some really bad ones! Insanely hard and lengthy tests, not enough time. Class is only out of 200 points, which is difficult. Save your money, and your GPA, and find another professor.
Please, do a quick search of Professor Gulay Dinckan and you will quickly see that across the board, every university she has taught at, she has failed her students. Her classes are made up of only a couple hundred points, there are only a few assignments, her tests are extremely lengthy, and difficult. Save your money and find another class.
25 question quizzes that are worth 5 points. Exams that you think make sense but your scores say otherwise. 15 min. speeches about having to grade so much work and the fact that we don't understand the simplest of concepts. 3 homework assignments within a semester isn't a lot of work. Save yourself the nightmare. Get someone who teaches.
She is a very down to earth professor, the assignments and test are easy if you just pay attention to her lectures. There is one project, but it only takes less than a day and is well worth the points.
Professor Dinckan is someone who you can tell is very passionate about what she teaches. She's a no BS kinda professor, so if you think you can get by with minimal effort you are wrong. She is very fair. She offers LOTS of extra credit but only grants it to those who work hard. Quizzes/Exams are tough but she drops lowest grade for each! TAKE HER!
Dinckans a cool Professor, you can tell she believes in what she teaches. Be polite, respectful and responsible and you won't have a problem w/ her. She doesn't give out many assignments. A couple of cool videos here and there. The quiz & test questions are pretty straight forward. As long as you read the textbook and study, you'll pass the class!
I learned so much from her class and her passion for anthropology made the subject more interesting. It is always refreshing when teacher cares for her students. Her online class is a great class and I recommend it. The assignments are fun and interesting. No big research paper.
Prof. Dinckan is one of the best professors I've had at San Diego Mesa College. This is a subject that I feel should be taken by all. Dinckan is very passionate about anthropology and spreading her knowledge to students. She makes you work hard but does an excellent job of preparing students to transfer into competitive four year colleges.
Very few points to be earned and worked with in this class. She does not give good feedback when grading your assignments online and does a very poor job explaining clearly what she wants. If you miss a few things, or don't get it exactly the way she wants to the T you lose a good chunk of points. A lot of text questions for a short time.
There are so many tiny details you have to be aware of in order to pass her class. She grades really hard on every detail and gives you fractions of points. I have a lot of experience with online classes and this is the lowest grade I have received.
She was the absolute worst professor I have ever had. She is not a good communicator, slow to grade, and just gives horrible feedback. I did not like her at all. Do not take her class.
Subject is very interesting. This teacher is terrible. She takes up to half of nearly every class complaining on how we (her students) are ungrateful, don't listen, don't interact, etc. She is very bad at communicating her expectations and gets mad at you if you ask for clarification. It is unfortunate that she ruins this class. Great subject
I do not understand how she still has a job as a teacher. She is very rude to her students for absolutely no reason. It seems as if it is her daily goal to lower your self-esteem by making students feel incompetent. Do not take her.
Get ready to work for your grade. I enjoyed this class even though it could be challenging at times. If you want to succeed, she will help. If you show her you care, she will help you do well. Don't expect to show up to class unprepared, uninterested, and disrespectful and assume you will succeed. You will not. Work hard and be patient!
She is the most amazing professor I have ever had. I absolutely loved her online cultural anthropology class! Her class content was very informative and interesting. She provided extra credit which helped increase my grade and GPA. I received an A in the class, it was very easy because I completed most assignments. I definitely recommend her!
Like any class, it requires work. You don't earn credits or degrees by skipping assignments and not completing your work! Her Cultural Anthro class was a great experience for my first Anthro class. It definitely required doing the reading and participating in )online) class discussions, but it wasn't overly difficult, even for a new subject to me.
Prof Dinckan cares a lot about her students and she wants nothing more than for you to succeed. Her class requires effort but compared to a 4 year class, its pretty easy. Be positive and she will work her heart out for you.
Prof. Dinckan has a great passion for Anthropology and drives to understand all people. She taught me to become more of a humanitarian and have a greater appreciation of all cultures. I took her Cultural Anthro. class, just come to class, participate, and STUDY to earn a good grade. There is a slight language barrier which could be tough at times.
Possibly a good teacher in class, not so much online. Professor Dinckan clearly does not value your time as an online student and takes her very sweet time grading assignments that do NOT need to take such extreme times to grade. For those discussion boards, be ready to wait 6 weeks for a grade.
This is by far the worst instructor I have had in all of my years of schooling. Anthropology should not be this tough, but she made it tough as nails.. Communication is TERRIBLE.. This lady doesnt care
Her class is boring, period. She does not try to make it engaging and it's just horrible. Her study guides are a joke and they're confusing. She is usually disrespectful to her students and makes the texting hand motion whenever we don't understand something and tells us that we just spend time on our phones. Do NOT take her class.
Prof. Dinckan is awful. There are 10 total quizzes (lowest one dropped), 4 exams (lowest one dropped), and one final. 4 Discussion worksheets that are graded very harshly. Do not copy and paste. Beware of talking/ being on your phone in class. Do not be late on test day. Do not miss movie days- she will NOT let you make it up. 25 points EC.
The best way to describe her is as one of those teachers who became a teacher with no interest in helping or educating students, her only interests are making sure shes listened to and everybody knows she has power. She disrupted class multiple times because someone was taking notes with technology SILENTLY, just to wave her big stick around.
The worst teacher I have ever had. Her tests are insane and she has zero interest in actually teaching
Dinckan is not very helpful when it comes to trying to understand her online class. Her due dates were weird and her modules were disorganized. I expressed this and her response was shady and rude, making me feel uncomfortable and leaving me feeling like I should've dropped the class sooner. Unless you like a challenge, wouldn't recommend.
Interesting material. Make sure to take good notes and you should do well on quizzes. Sometimes provides extra credit at the end of class. Make sure to not talk or use phones during class because she will call you out.
Worst class I have ever taken. RUN AVOID THIS CLASS. Terrible . Unorganized.
bruh will make up anything to take off points on assignments, her discussion boards are tedious, a very big pain to do with the criteria she sets. I didn't learn much taking this class, and I no longer enjoy sciences after this class. Overall I wouldn't take her again, nor would I recommend her to anyone. take her at your own risk. i hope u do well
This professor has been my most difficult, although the professor isn't as much of a problem it's the way the class is formatted and the grading is harder on the students than it should be. I personally did not enjoy my time in this class and hoped for something different, in the end, this class was more difficult than it needed to be.
worst decision of my life .her comments are next to useless when she grades your assignments. i feel like she doesn't even try to help her students .she does offer a tiny bit of extra credit(not easy). you will regret taking this course no joke :/
This is one of the worst professors I have ever had; she is extremely vague with her class assignments but an extremely picky grading and basically wants you to read her mind about what she specifically wants you to talk about in an already broad subject matter
I have taken 3 years of class with various teachers and she is absolutely the worst teacher I have ever taken from!! DO NOT TAKE CLASS FROM THIS TEACHER!! Avoid at all costs!! Course exam material does not match book or lectures! Extremely unwilling to help students.
Don't take her, very tedious with discussion boards and not good at teaching. She is my only class I have a B in and its not because of me.
Please flee this class! Professor Gulay Dinckan is on a never-ending power trip and relentlessly looks for any reason to fail students and trash their GPA, creating a toxic learning atmosphere. If she feels you did not write the essay to her standards, she will threaten you with a meeting with the Dean of your institution to humiliate you.
Took this professor despite reading all of the other reviews, thinking how bad could it be. Well, I learned a lesson and so should you. I have a nearly 4.0 GPA and got a B+ due to this professors extreme personal standards for grading. It doesn't matter how well you could have wrote something, it is about if it STRICTLY follows her EXACT liking.
This teacher, really, should not be teaching. I have never had a class in which, on a test, the questions are asked in such a vague way that there is no way to get the answers correctly. I am not surprised by her low scores due to this and many other problems. She does not allow any current formats. Not enough room to define all problems here. FIX
Please trust all of the negative reviews! This Professor absolutely does not seem to care about her students. I am 30 & learning to conform back to regular life (recent Veteran), in all my years I have NEVER experienced anything like this in academics. Her grading is harsh and she is very unhelpful. Almost as if she trying to fail her students.
Do not take any classes with this professor. From one girly to another...run away.
this class made me rethink a lot of my life choices...don't take unless you hate yourself
Basic Anthropology course; not so basic class. Tedious and strenuous. Period.
The syllabus is disappointingly vague and cherry-picked, leaving students confused when trying to address her feedback. Her communication lacks clarity and organization, making it nearly impossible to provide rebuttals. She doesn't share her expectations willingly, opting instead to wield it as a form of superiority over her students.
Extremely vague with her rubric
She does not provide clear guidance or communication when grading. She says one thing on her syllabus and then grades based on unclear instructions. She will make you do a journal entry at the beginning and ask you to clarify the syllabus before the term even begins but she doesn't follow up for feedback after you've done the work. Don't recommend.
I wish I read the reviews before signing up for this class. Worst professor I've ever had. Your work will never be good enough for her. She says she wants the work one way then grades it a very different way. I read all the bad reviews and everyone is right. Stay away from this class if you want to pass.
I could easily write an 800-word paper on how petty, passive-aggressive, and controlling this professor is but I'm limited to 350 characters. It's not the coursework or the assignments that are hard, it is literally her personalized standards that are poorly explained and followed with impunity. If you don't please her power trip you're failing.
She has probably been the most difficult because of how harshly she grades.I feel like I am trying to give my all and it is never good enough! She is a really hard grader and I feel dumb taking her class. I never get constructive criticism I get more like answers that she wants me to put. No suggestions on how to improve either. Be aware!
Professor Dinckan very inconsistent in her own syllabus. While one may think her class material is easy, her grading is another story. She grades as she pleases and when one questions her, she often replies, "that's what it is!"
Every negative comment you see....its very accurate. I got a zero on a assignment all because I responded to someone who already had a response. Material is not diffcult. Her grading is harsh and petty. The worst part I dont even need this class.
This class was tough - the professor has high standards and can be tough on grading. But with tools like unstuck AI for study prep, I was able to manage the workload. Overall, not the easiest class, but doable if you put in the effort.
! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR! I took this class because I enrolled late and it was the only one available. Looking back I really wish I didn't. This has been the worst course I've ever taken my whole college career. She is one of the worst professors I've experienced. The class isn't difficult at all. Her grading is! Wish I read the reviews…
NOOOOOOOOOOOO. GOD NO. NO NO NO NO. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Take this as a sign, you are GUARANTEED a C. Impossible to do well. Harsh grader and doesn't budge on her flimsy grading she makes it up.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR NO MATTER WHAT UNLESS YOU ENJOY SUFFERING! This Professors sole purpose is to feed you misinformation, then mark you wrong when you answer questions based off of her material. PLEASE I BEG OF YOU DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!
The single most backwards class I have ever taken. Avoid at all costs.
The information for each module is very clear, making it easy to study for the quizzes and exams which are okay, but the discussion posts are very hard to get a good grade on. She is extremely harsh, and does not give any makeup or extra credit work. Not a very interesting class either, very dull.
Genuine misinformation spreader. Has wrong information on tests and quizzes, and incredibly confusing wording on said questions.
