100% agree with the other posting. Terrible teacher. I'm in my 4th year and she is easily the worst teacher I've had. Poor communication skills, apparent lack of understanding of the topic, and seems completely clueless to students needs. Makes what should be a fairly simple class just confusing and completely un-enjoyable. Avoid.
Monotone, confusing lecture on easy material, better off reading the book yourself than going to her lecture
Disaster. Sometimes she does not even know what she is talking about. Midterm marking is confusing, MC so midleading! I hope i did not take it...
She is the worst teacher in SFU .lecture useless!! Confusing problem, totally no idea what she talking about!!AVOID HER!!
terrible teacher :(. take this class if you want to fail.
Great professor, very helpful, knows her material. You do have to study hard to do well in her class.
She's OFTEN confused with her own teaching material in both tutorial and lecture. So, students have to help her find her way back sometimes. She can't get her points across at all. She TALKS&WRITES a lot like CRAZY, but you can never really tell what she's exactly trying to tell you. I don't think she understood the material herself.
She tends to get lost in her lectures , true. But she is actually quiet fair when it comes to exams, questions are EXACTLY like tutorial and sample exam questions only number change. She puts up the solutions too. I took 290 with her and taking 301 with her , by choice as well, so she is doing something right.
She didn't know what she was teaching and didn't know what students were asking. She tended to make simple things complicated. She rushed thru the last couple chapters but in the final, she asked questions deeply about those chapters. She spoke in a hypnotic, monotonic way.
WORST econ prof. I HATE econ now because of her. Notes are NOT notes more like sentences. Writing AND GRAPHS are messy. Talks AND writes TOO FAST which causes everyone to focus on copying down her notes rather than to what she is saying. Because if you don't she will either 1) write off screen or 2)move everything that she just wrote off screen.
I don't want to rate her badly, but i really upset, took her class twice and still can't keep up with what she expects from student, i'm okay with pure teaching as far as the exam is fair but her lecture is really unclear, that's the thing that i hate from her, if you want to take with her, please think twice, i think i made a wrong decision here...
Course material is hard, but she did a good job teaching. She took time to reiterate points and made sure we understood. Exams were tough, but she bumped everyone's marks up. Keep up in lectures and do the tutorial questions and you'll be fine. Went into the final with 113% overall (because of her extra marks) and came out with an A+.
she does a good job explaining the work. She gets a little confused, her tests are fair and she's generous in her marking. Econ 105 is a difficult course so you have to study alot to get a good mark, she does her best explaining the material, the rest is up to you.
Although she is a knowledgable professor, I found her material to be purely based on her assignments and past midterms. If you manage to learn from my mistakes you can definitely achieve a B or higher. Doing this can be pivotal and can make a difference between a C and a B. Good luck
She is very nice prof. very friendly and helpful, however, her exams are extremely hard, the MC questions are tricky and so many ppl can't get it, study her lecture notes and if you want to study hard take her class otherwise you will not get a good grade. she expects a lot from u !!!!!!!!!! but i liked her she has a nice personality.
Class ended up with students on two extremes, ended up with lots of A/A+. She does get confused over her own notes sometimes, but not too bad. She could use some improvement in intonation when teaching. Tests are straight out of tutorial hw and notes, very fair. If you read the chapters taught you should have no problem.
Just awful. This class was a complete disaster. I hate to be mean, but this lady should not be a teacher. She may be smart but she can't teach at all. That stupid Russian student who wouldn't stop arguing with her the whole semester didn't help either. SFU econ should absolutely get rid of her. useless. dont take a class with her if you can avoid.
shes the worst prof ever, can't teach, bad writing, yells in class! just horrible
I Don't care what anybody says. Gulritz is a Great teacher. She gives you all your notes ahead of class via email. Then she fills in the blanks with graphs in class. She goes pretty slow, and if you know your notes, you will ace the class. I've had her 3 times. I would take a class from her any day!!!!!
has real trouble expressing ideas in a clear and coherent fashion. obvs english is her second language, but her wording is terrible and spelling/grammar is a mess. conveys ideas in such an awkward manner. at the end of the semester wouldn't tell us which chapters were covered, said "you figure it out". i suspect because she doesn't know herself.
basically i'd rather graduate a semester late than have to have her again for econ 301. she taught a whole bunch of sh*t not in the textbook and i kinda think she made some of it up no joke :( don't understand a word out of her mouth. notes so disorganized and random.
Terrible, the final is terrible, everything is terrible......
gets confused over her own notes all the time. brings up irrelevant material and presents it in such an awkward and confusing manner. she needs some lessons in english and in teaching. is also rude and yells all the time. i will definitely definitely avoid her like the plague. just glad it was only a 200-level course and not 301.
Terrible Prof. Would AVOID at ALL COST. MT was super unfair. did not give enough time at all and class average was around 40%. instead of scaling it shes weighing the final to 75% . She cannot teach in lecture. Terrible attitude. She gets angry when a student ask questions
One of the worst profs I've had in SFU. The accent I can understand and take but her notes and delivery is just plain horrible. I have no doubt she knows her stuff but she doubts herself when delivering it. It also doesn't help that all her notes are based on the old textbook because the new and old textbooks are worlds different
Avoid Gulriz at all costs. Without a doubt she is THE WORST professor I have had at SFU. She just plain does not know how to teach. I think she needs to take a few classes herself and learn that skill. I am scared that even if I pass this class, I won't know the material well enough for future classes. Please heed my warning!
I can not be angry with her for lacking the skills to teach. Therefore I am upset at SFU for hiring her, and for making her teach Econ 301, arguably one of the most important econ classes of our undergrad career. I have no idea how she was given clearance to teach this class, as she lacks the skills to teach at this level.
She is the WORST teacher i have EVER had in my life, she can barely speak english and she talks like she's in a hurry. Never stops to discuss with the class or let the class catch up with what's going on in her head. If you ask for help, she WILL help but you will not feel like she helped at all. She explains the way she would understand herself.
Both of her midterms were relevant to tutorial questions and the study guide. Since she does not examine hard stuffs, I'm afraid I might not do well in Econ302.. btw those who complained she cannot teach, I agree with you. Those who complained her exams are impossible, you have problems, not her.
Gulriz is a very nice person, BUT she does not know how to teach. She is very unclear, and explains the material so fast that no one understands what is going on. She teaches theory in class, but her midterms are based on Math problems. The only way to study for this course is thorough reading the book and getting LOTS of help form TAs.
Gulriz is very likeable as a person and clearly means well, however, she simply lacks the skills to teach a class at this level. It's unfortunate that she could not convey the material in a comprehensive manner because now I feel like I will struggle in future Economics classes because I didn't learn enough. Avoid her!!
Good prof. Passionate about teaching. A bit rushed but covered a lot of ground. The letdown for me was the text, not the prof. Wish the Nicholson text (Summer 2010) had been used.
Go to her office hours, and ask for help. I had 105, 290,301. she is awesome, but you must attend her classes and try to do assignments. I give her A+
Very Poor at conveying material in class, and even explaining concepts in office hours. Does theory in class, and numerical problems in exams. go figure. Exams are too long for the time she allots, 1 person did not leave her midterms in a 230 person class, not responsive to student feedback
Good prof. Like any other 'weeder' course, if you don't pre-read and don't do the problem sets, you will bomb. If you do put in the effort, you'll do well. I give her a B+
Likeable person, really cares about students, but not the right prof or text for 301.
Boring in class. Favourite words: What, why and the classic: So on and so forth. Rather helpful in her office hours. Exams are harder. Take it if you're dedicated to the course.
this prof is ok, cares about the subject but doesn't really know how to explain it well. she talks to you like you should already know whats going on in the course, almost talks to teach herself. exams are extremely difficult.
She is such a great teacher! She explain things really well. Not like others who only read out the slides. Do go to lectures, because it helps you a lot! Not many assignments, but do try your best. I want to take more course with her. Don't know why others say bad about her.
She is such a great teacher! She explains course content pretty well. But her writing is kinda unreadable. Want to attend her higher level classes.
Her notes are also from the book, and sometimes unorganized. Very strong accent. Do advanced reading so you won't get lost in her lectures. She sometimes branches out to other topics (or chapters) and make it look more complicated. Seems scary but approachable.
Horrible Prof. Her notes are unrelated to what is being tested on and is very vague and confusing. Continues to teach on even when the class seems oblivious to what she's teaching. It also seems she has no clue what she's teaching as she constantly makes mistakes and seems to be reading off a paper while lecturing. Horrible prof. Do not take...
she's good, not so well organized though. just do the pre-reading and write down the notes before she move on, and you will be fine. got an A+. The korean TA is nice
Provides pretty good explanations and notes, even if it does take some time. But am still glad she did took the time to explain stuff. I think she is a fairly good prof.
One of the worst profs in Econ department and that says a lot since most of them are not competent. She's terrible at explaining stuff and makes lots of mistakes. Also she comes across as a very rude person even though she probably didn't mean to.
"The overall performance was very good. The class average is C+ and I am very happy to find out that compared to other years, the proportion of students who ended up with C- or higher is a lot higher with your class." That's all u can get from her. Read all the comments first before u take her class.
Good prof. Very fair exams and clear interpretation and helpful. Someone who fails her class must have not studied hard. Her exam is much less challenging compared to other profs.
Good prof. Always encourage students to answer her questions. Very informative. The good thing is she gives a lot of A+ and As in her session, compared to other profs in econ. It is the easiest econ courses I have ever taken.
A fairly good prof. Dont know why a lot of people give negative feedback on her. Those who fails her class must not have studied at all. Her exams are super easy
She's such a great prof!Don't know why others say bad about her. Yes,she has accent, but it's understandable;she has the most explicit notes;she cares about students and always ask if we are ok with the materials. She treats us like friends and gives encouragement.Go to her lectures,do the assignments and you'll be fine. I'm satisfied with my B+ :)
She definitely could be my top3 pros at SFU. She is really helpful and would like to receive feedback from students. She cares about her students and her midterm and assignments are fairly corrected. If you want get a great grade on this course, do to choose her
If you want to learn MacroEcon, take this course with her. She really cares about students. Her notes are great, easy to follow and they relate to the textbook quite clearly. Barkin is super; will miss having her as a professor. Assignments, midterm and final are fairly marked and neither too hard nor too easy.
VERY GOOD PROFESSOR, IF YOU PRACTISE CAREFULLY, THE EXAM IS SO EASY~
She is a very good person who always willing to help her students. But her teaching skill is bad enough to make you confuse about this course. Take her class if and only if you are super good at math. Her major was computer programming, so you always have to follow the logical thinking. Worst text book used I have ever seen.
Midterms and finals are more then fair. The assignments were not too hard either. Overall not an overly difficult class. 30% of the people in our class got A's although the class average was still in the C+ range. Her ability to communicate the material needs some improvement but her fair exams more then compensates. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Does bad job of explaining and most info in textbook. Poor job of answering questions. Too much of the mark depends on exams, so if you don't get it, there is no chance of getting a good mark. Is a nice person but bad teacher.
She was so helpful. If you want to do well, you just have to attend lecture, and do the problem sets every week. I learned the most from her tutorials. She is really nice and wants her students to do well. She is happy to help you if you are stuck on anything.
She's a good teacher, very straight forward. Tests were more than fair and assignments challenged your knowledge of the subject but not too hard. I would definitely take another class with her !
You never have to attend lectures, everything is from the textbook. She is not very clear with her explanations. Hard exams, and sees everyone in her class as if they are a Economic 4th year students. For a intro class this class was way too difficult.
Boring. Do not go to class, you'll learn more about Microeconomics from the textbook--class will just confuse you. She's so bad, that after her class, I ended up transferring to UBC, because apparently, SFU Econ is a joke. Waste of my time and money.
Horrible. Seems so nice and so knowledgeable, but is so bad at teaching. She doesn't explain what gets tested on, avoid!!!!!!!!!!
she's nice and highly knowledgeable. best choice for 201/301. the textbook is optional
All her lectures will be about graphs which is stupid cause all her exams are MCQ based. Her MCQ's are confusing and she makes no effort to explain that material in class. Also course is cumulative which is stupid yet again because her final is mostly going to cover the chapters before the midterm. Do not take it with her.
She is a good prof and she is very helpful during her office hour. I just had my final 2 days ago, i have got 80% for my midterms, but i could not understand a single question on her final. She has high expectation on her students. btw, the final made my friend cry.
very good prof
If the class average is very low, she will add marks to everyone to increase class average. She is nice, TAs are also good. Final is hard, but if you done in midterm, you'll be fine.
This course entails: graphing, calculus, and formula work. Being familiar with these three things is essential for passing this class.
Good prof for 103, very different for 201. Some people find her confusing, its just because she has so many ideas in her head but can't get them out properly. Only talks in one tone of voice . Midterms were fair, final was fair. Overall average- good course and prof.
Had her for 103, very different prof for 201. She is probably one of the easier 201 profs. Her lectures are all theoretical but then when it comes to the tests you need to know the numbers and derivatives. Pay attention to the tutorial assignments and practice midterm and you'll do okay. Practice derivatives before you start the class.
although this is a first year class I am not a first year student. It is a prerequisite for a required course, and Gulriz is by far the worst professor I have had in my university career. If you're not sitting in the first few rows she won't answer your questions or lecture to you, and has a very strong accent and unclear lecture notes. Saveurself
avoid avoid avoid!!!!! makes no effort to help or clarify, exams are unclear she is unclear, does not welcome comments, does not welcome anything from anyone sitting farther than three rows back from her - horrible teaching style. I am changing my major because her attitude and teaching of the content made me hate the subject so much
She is helpful during office hours. Nice prof but she is really hard to understand in lecture. She goes through the material pretty slowly and trys to make sure it's well understood. She does have a pretty thick accent which makes it hard to understand sometimes. mid term and final were fair.
There's no point going to lecture because 1) her accent is so thick you can't understand her 2) all her material is based off the textbook. But because it's based off the textbook, all you have to do is read the book and practice the online mcq to prepare for an exam. Her grading scheme is considered easy compared to other econ profs.
Not an easy class, you have to work for it. Lots of reading from the textbook, lectures are long, sometimes boring. Her explanations are often unclear and broad, depending on your TA the tutorials are worth it. Final and midterm were ok, homework isnt too bad
Hard material, unhelpful prof. Tries to explain things to the best of her ability, yet just seems to repeat herself. Not a bad person, just not the best prof. Taught myself most of the course from the textbook and study guide. Study guide is SUPER useful
Had Gulriz Summer 2014 for Econ 103, and took econ 201 in the fall with her. She is a great prof I don't know what everyone else is saying. These are fundamental courses in economics, and if you work hard and follow the book and her lecture notes hand in hand you will do well. Just have to beat the average.
If you go to class every day and listen you will do well. If you do Econ 103 or Econ 105 you have to have to take it with her. If you try the class could be a GPA booster.
First of all , not a bad person at all, she is quite nice. But lectures are unclear , she just fails to explain key concepts/steps to solve a problem. I read the txt book and teach the course myself and is way better than going to her lecture, seriously!
To pass this class you really need to stay on top of things. Her exams are always fair but it's a lot of info. Overall, a pretty decent class.
I passed this class with almost 100 % and I had never taken an Econ course in my life. That said, it's because I attended every lec, asked lots of Qs, listened to the lecs and went to office hours. Prof Barkin is very helpful if she sees you have put in the effort: very approachable, clear explanations and always puts in extra time for students.
She really wants a lot of her students to do well, and encourages everyone to ask questions. Homework is optional but highly recommended to do because it's really similar to what will be on the exams, which were not too bad, and were far from being unfair. If you keep up with the homework you should do alright in the course.
Solid choice for ECON 103. Her exam questions are pretty fair and her teaching is pretty decent. If you show up to class and take notes, you probably won't need to read the textbook.
Goes kind of quick through the material. But really wants you to do well in the class and succeed.
Go to her lectures, take notes and ask questions if you are stuck then you should do fine. Exams are fair, but a lot of info and concepts you need to understand. She is also almost always available during her office hours if you need help.
Attending class will not make much of a difference in your learning. Reading the textbook/youtubing topics will get you a good mark considering her tests are based on material covered in her notes. As long as you get the notes and her answers for the tutorial questions you'll be set. She marks fairly and will only give deserved marks.
She is one of the best proffessors ever. she teaches in a way that you learn everything for good. You just have to go to all her lectures and listen carefully. She tries to engage students and you will learn a lot this way. I took Econ 103 w another prof and I failed but when I took it with her I got A+. Can't emphasize more on how great she is .
She is a pretty good prof, but she goes through material very quickly. Don't be afraid to ask questions or go to office hours if you don't understand because some things she teaches is done differently than in the textbook, so in order to understand what she expects from you, ask questions. Showing up to class is crucial!!!!
Unclear notes (must read textbook!!) and chooses very easy questions for tutorials that in no way reflect what she would test on. Avoid if you can!! Likes to yell and she should really get a mike instead. Talks about concepts that she doesn't test on and spends a lot of time on them.
All you need to do is read her lecture notes and understand the gist of it. I am a student who had no economics background and took this course as the first economics course of my life, skipped lectures most of the time. Just made sure I understand her lecture notes and if not go to her office hours which was always very helpful!
Professor Barking is clearly passionate about ECON and I found her lectures very engaging. Her emphasis on particular concepts during lectures DO show up on exams so I would highly encourage attending lectures and participating. Fair grader for a potentially challenging first year course.
Dr. Barkin is an incredible professor. Her lectures are engaging and her notes are easy to follow. In Econ 201 be prepared to do a lot of practice questions as the class was entirely exam based when I took it. As long as you work hard outside of class, participate in lectures and show up to tutorial you should do well.
her midterm was fair but her final was so hard even i had put a lot effort on it. her lecture also not clear at all and her accent so hard to understand
Specific lecture notes. Participate in every class and do tutorial questions. Go to office hour before exams. It's not that hard as you think.
Worst prof ever.... never provide enough time for students to jot down the notes. her lectures are so unorganised and terrible. She keeps taking for almost two hours without a break( she never breathe). would not recommend others to take her class.
Bad preparations before class. dont even know what shes teaching in the class Will not take her class again
Horrible teaching, speaking with no intonation, no time to take notes, and weird method to take attendance. Will definitely not take her class again.
She is good at making the easiest things hardest to understand. Never take her class again. Thanks for giving me this horrible experience in SFU.
I would recommend you study on your own instead of attending her lecture. Easily confuse you and her lecture is unorganized as well as her explanation is vague. She is very approachable but even office hour she would talk for nonsense. Compare to other economic profs (even with more harder course), their explanations are way better than hers.
The worst prof I ever had! If you can choose someone else to teach you this course, please do, because it can't be any worse than Gulriz Barkin. It's impossible to listen to her in lectures because of her accent, and on top of that she makes even a simple demand and supply difficult.
Worst prof I have had at SFU in 4 years. Doesn't explain concepts clearly, hard to understand and seems unorganized. Take it with anyone else.
She is an awesome professor. She teaches the hard classes so it's not her fault its hard. If you go to her office hours and put the work in you will do good. She cares about her students, you won't know that until you start going to office hours. In my opinion she's a really underrated professor. I would definitely take a class with her again.
She has really good teaching skill. Just attend every lecture and do not miss any tutorial class then you should do well. Her way of explaining concepts is efficientbut it might be hard for those who have weak economic basis to follow. However trying to ask questions during office hoursdo not be shyEcon201 is not that hard as you image.
She is one of the best profs I have taken at SFU. To be honest, I was about to quit this course because of her accent but I chose to stay. I love the way she teaches the course, as she always explains the concepts in terms of "english" words, not economics ones. Please go to office hours/ask the prof/TA if you have any questions and you'll do well
Gulriz struggles with time management, she will go on a 35 minute tangent in a 50 minute lecture about something rather unimportant, but she will gloss over complicated concepts without giving any examples of application. She is also very unclear about what will be on the tests, giving almost no info as to what the exams will look like.
Terrible teaching, keep speaking around 3 hour. Very unclear explaination, and hard assignments. The lecture is many many words, and hard to understand.
JUST PAINFUL TAKING HER COURSE. BETTER TO READ THE TEXTBOOK AND LEARN BY YOURSELF.
All the positive reviews are fake. This is probably the most out of touch prof Ive ever had and we just started the course. Running a 3rd year Econ elective like its a PhD course at Harvard. Zero consideration for course accessibility. Course itself is fine but prof demands attendance but cant deliver the lecture properly.
This Prof is bad, not only as a teacher, but as a communicator. She is impatient and stubborn. She cuts you off in conversations. She does not listen to you. In office hours, she often complains how tired she is. No wonder she gets to her age without achieving anything other than being a sessional instructor at SFU.
Maybe better teaching other classes but so far the experience in 383 has been complete garbage. Avoid if you can and take a different econ elective. runs the class like 201 or 302 even though its an elective and did not make any accomdations/change for online learning. Completely coasting just collecting a paycheque.
she will repeat herself a lot in the lectures. the lecture organization is confusing. it is impossible to follow her pace. expected to do the assignment on your own because she does not teach those concepts in lectures. she will go on and on about nonsense for the entire 3 hours of class time. also very rude when students asking her questions.
She made me really love Economics as you can tell she really enjoys teaching it too. She's an inspiring and enthusiastic educator. I can see why she'd get bad ratings as the courses she teach are all very challenging. Don't miss any lecture, ask questions, do all homework yourself, read lecture notes before and after classes and you'll do well.
Great teacher, had her for 2 classes, sometimes hard to understand and requires a lot of effort but definitely a great teacher of economics
Good professor overall, she has very engaging lectures. Very accessible outside of class too, responds to emails very quickly. Class attendance is mandatory with her. We covered some important materials that were not uploaded to canvas.
So, mandatory quizzes every class was a pain. The course was mindboggling boring and easy -- it shouldn't be an upper-year elective. However, the prof treats it like it's econ 201. If that's your cup of tea, fair. It was painful. I can't recommend taking electives with Gulriz. However, I think Gulriz may be a good ECON 201 prof.
Barkin is an amazing prof if you actually care about learning. If you want an easy grade then don't take economics. She is very passionate about teaching the RIGHT way as she won't take half-thought-out answers. If you engage in lecture you will have success. After failing the first midterm from lack of effort, I begin to engage myself and flourish
Thanks to Prof. Barkin, I got an Ace in her course and beware of Environmental Economics. Thus, studying how humans should deal with the environment has been a part of my work. I still appreciate Barkin's caring replies and objective ratings in the course. Her lectures inspired me.
Terrible lecturer
She takes so much time in explaining concepts that should've been explained quickly. she is very repetitive and doesn't easily get to the point. overall, her lectures are uninteresting and you can get easily get sidetracked. make sure to read the textbooks and do a lot of practice.
Just terrible
Very bad at explaining the material. She makes the class significantly harder than it should be. Extremely aggressive and unapproachable attitude. Do not recommend this class to anyone.
Very unclear professor that is unorganized and over explains concepts when she does not need to. Combined with her thick accent makes it an unpleasant learning experience. Writes her notes in class and are not written before lecture. Show up for the mandatory in class quiz and learn from the textbook.
I like to give the benefit of the doubt to professors teaching intro courses, but her embarrassing ineptitude to teach a seemingly simple class is extraordinary. She talks down on students that gets in-class questions wrong, gets easily sidetracked and rambles endlessly about simple topics, no hyperbole. If you know what's good for you, avoid her.
Awful. Don't take.
This class ruined my life bro.
No bueno.
BEWARE. AVOID. DO NOT TAKE.
highly suggesting avoid taking her and would wait for a better professor to teach this course.
Some individuals just shouldn't teach... Gulriz is one of them. Stay away. Stay safe.
Avoid her at all costs! TERRIBLE lectures, bad at teaching, awful notes, rambles a lot, weekly pop quizzes, and overall just terrible. Only take her class if you hate your life.
Horrible prof. Passionate about econ and understanding, but trails off so much that makes it hard to understand and lectures get boring and confusing. Does weekly quizzes and doesnt tell you when so that you come to class. Also does weekly check ins for attendance and asks what you have learned. Would not take this prof again for any course.
I didn't go to class and I learned more than people who did, I just read the textbook. She hostages people by having in class quizzes. Take with literally any other prof
Nice person but very wordy lectures. Sometimes it difficult to understand her. Weekly quizzes to get students to attend class. Midterms are decently hard. A lot of office hours with prof and TA. Materials kinda hard
Professor Barkin, is a nice professor, although her lectures are confusing and hard to understand a some points. The book is more useful than her lecture slides, so don't skip on getting the book. She is much better in office hours and will work through each problem with you in detail.
Only passed this course thanks to the textbook and the study guide. All the lectures felt like she was unteaching me the content. The quizzes were kind of inconvenient but were a useful tool for recap. Had to do canvas surveys after class once a week which drove me insane. Overall tragic
Barkin needs to learn how to teach properly. Lectures were incredibly boring and the only reason you needed to attend class was to complete the quizzes. The final counted as 55% of your grade and you can tell how that affected students... Overall I suggest anyone considering taking her class to find better profs.
She seems like a nice person, but she tends to ramble during class. She takes up a lot of the class time overexplaining certain points which led to us being behind. She does pop quizzes and weekly check-ins for attendance. Many also ended up zoning out of the class since her lectures didn't help much. Attendance isn't taken in tutorials.
awful
She's nice but she rambles way too much. She doesn't know how to teach (makes concepts way too complicated) so I gave up with her methods. Ended up using ChatGPT for the last month and barely passed the class. Tutorials were mandatory which helped more than the lectures. Would take again only because the alternatives are even worse for ECON 302.
Awful, and final grades are only based on final exam marks and never do extra credit. Hard grading. would not take it again
The more I took her lecture, the more I am certain I'll fail this class. Textbook somehow is more interesting to read and easier to undertand than her lecture.
I wish I had read the reviews before I took her class. I am an honour roll student with straight A's and her classes are so confusing and difficult to understand. She spends so much time on one thing and then rushes through others and does things that the text book doesn't refer to yet expects you to know on exams.
Lectures should be recorded for how much she yaps.
try taking this course with another prof. its a 3 hour lecture and by the end i feel like i am forgetting the concepts i already know. Very strict and particular about her way so even if you technically say something right she would say no not exacty correct but her way is the only correct way. I donot understand anything in her lectures
Gulriz is a nice person but her testing is not. Mt 1 was too long as it was the length of a final exam (she only gave us 2 hours). Not only that, lectures are too boring. Don't recommend her.
Lectures arent mandatory so just grind out the textbook and tutorial problems and you should be fine. If you are going to lectures bring a pillow or sum
Without any useful helping on the course, the test is not related to what she taught during the class. Awful professor.
She is a nice person, even though the test is harder than the other classes.
She's really nice, really passionate and loves to teach. BUT, her exams and tutorial questions are so different than her course material. They require a lot of interpretation and dissection that she doesn't directly teach you how to do, but expects you to be able to do. I enjoyed the material, but it's hard to follow her in lectures.
Ok professor but very easy class. Got by with just reading textbook a few times and doing tutorial questions. Didn't interact her much she seems intimidating at first but seems quite nice, gives a bit of my way or the highway feeling during lectures tho. Lecture was boring and there was no point going.
She quite nice but her lectures make me feel like i was literally unlearning the stuff. Rambles on an don about easy topics for way too long and went over harder topics way to fast. Textbook was pretty good though. Midterms/final were okay but a handful of question doesn't reflect what we learnt
Yaps a lot
Not friendly, rambles for the entire class on the most useless things. Cannot complete thoughts and always bounces around to fast.
Talks way too much and always makes simple content more difficult.
After receiving my midterm back, I was trying to figure out why this one question was wrong (worth 9 marks) & after finally emailing her, she said that the she didn't realize the TA had regraded it & it was actually right. Had I not reached out to her, my grade would be a letter grade lower because she is careless.
Lectures can be long and wordy. Attending is a must for weekly quizzes. The material is challenging, but Unstuck AI and the textbook help make sense of the content. Overall, a tough but manageable course.
Not the worst professor. Her grading in this course is very challenging. The final is way too hard to solve as a just starting Econ major. No partials or even anything on the exams. Lectures are a HASSLE to go through, very tough course.
The course was meant to teach undergraduate econ majors an introduction to communicate effectively using economics lingo, but she made it about something else completely. She had biases towards certain students, which became evident towards the end of the course. Do not recomend taking any course with her.
Don't take any classes with this prof
