Hard to understand; doesn't teach the material very well! A nice guy!

Very hard test, but steepest curves ever.... dont read book, just do homework
Hard exams, do the HW, huge curve
will not understand what he says, test on thigs he has not covered.
Terrible

Worst teacher ever. Can't understand a word he says! Always gets bad evulations
GET HELP! He explains nothing and teaches even less.
Doesn't speak english. Won't shake your hand. Teach's you nothing at all.
Needs to find a new profession! Worst instructor yet!
hard to understand, & superhard tests
Can't avoid him, so just take him once a week and get it over with.

CAN WE GET A LITTLE VARIETY FOR THIS COURSE WITH PROFESSORS.
Good guy and an even better instructor.

very knowledgeable
This class is a Joke. Prof. Joh is a genious from Wharton but no one can understand him. His slides aren't relevent to the exams or the book. The only thing to do is study the study guide, online, pray, guess B, and forego class.
Really hard class, that's the fact. Doesn't matter who teaches it. Joh is a nice guy and a good teacher, plus I think MTV is his favorite station.
Even if you answer his questions correctly, he doesn't understand what your saying. Needless to say, one strains to understand him!
It appears everybody has difficulty in his class, but it's fairly easy. If you read the book and understand his slides, it's no problem. No projects, few homeworks.
Buy the book and the study guide, class is horrible. The curve is really big, and most students get a C.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. I got a B and I only showed up for exams after the first midterm. I can't understand a word he says. There are questions on his exams that are never covered in the text or his lectures.
Sounds funny when he says "balance sheeeeeeet"
His systematic approach helps me a lot.
I like Professor Joh's class a lot.
Use his lecture slides carefully. Accounting is easy and simple.
Boring class, hard to sit through and hes very hard to understand, hard tests too
Most valuable and practical.
Some quys are stupid. Professor Joh explained examples and cases and said they would be on test. With minor changes, they were. Easy course if you have a basic understadning.
This professor can't teach, I learn more from the book. He just doesn't due what he is supposed to be getting paid for, which is help the students understand the material. I know because I also teach
I learned a lot from this class. The professor did not afraid of discussing difficult issues such as pension. Actually this was the only course where I could learn the topic.
This guy is wack. Everyone is currently failing his class. Read the book, it's a better teacher than this guy.
Terrible teacher, can't explain anything, lecture slides useless
Boring lectures, unclear grading system at first, then used curve, which made things easier. Difficult accent but funny at times with stupid jokes. Learned more from the book but lost any interest in accounting field. He's knows too much about accounting to try to teach clueless students.
Avoid this professor! Don't put yourself through the torture.
His a terrible teacher doesnt know how to teach and he has a bad accent.
My first business course. A lot interesting. Very difficult textbook. Thanks to Professor's kind explanation, I could learn a lot.
a valuable course.
Not a good teacher. Nice guy but doesn't communicate well with his english nor his communication skills. Took half the semester to have a grading system that worked. Stay away if possible. No one was going to class toward end of semester. Try someone else.
This is the worst professor at the university. Horrible accent, slides and lectures are useless. I knew more about accounting before I took this class. Avoid Gun Ho Blow at all cost.
I like like the cpurse.
Don't need the book. His Web-page has everything. Take his on-line quiz and lecture notes for a good greade.
This professor is aweful. You can barely understand what he is teaching, and he doesn't understand you when you ask questions. His notes don't match the questions on the test, so you defnintly have to teach everything to yourself!
I just took my final in advanced accounting. He apparently took questions from a test bank for another textbook! It was nothing like our homework problems. He puts forth minimal effort in trying to help students learn the material. You are pretty much on your own in this class.
I learned more accounting than any other accounting class.
Well, what can I say? I speak English.. not Chinese, so it was a toughy. And now... course forgiveness.
balance shheeeeeeeeeeeetttt

STAY AWAY DANG IT!!!! This guy sucks!!!!!! No point in even trying to learn anything everyone gets a c with curve anyways
I'm not going to lie, this class is hard. I learned a lot in his class, but his tests require that you remember pretty much everything you've learned in every other accounting class you've taken... after studying like mad I got 100% on the final (not raw, but highest score in the class). This class is not for the weak.
It was hard. After two midterm exams, I thought I got a C. I earned an A- because I thoroughly prepared for the final, using his lecture and notes. Do not expect to pass the course without study.
A valuable course to combine finance issues together with financial accounting. I learned many topics that were not taught in financial accounting or investment.
just ride the curve
you cant understand him, the material is hard enough, it is not helpful, it distorts your understanding of the business world, i love state schools.
WORST TESTS EVER, AHHHH! RUN!
He is extremely boring and it's really hard to understand him. He doesn't understand the student's questions sometimes and he will go over textbk problems until you want to kill yourself. Avoid taking, if possible. You'll snooze in every class if you take it.
Seriously, just guess when it comes to taking his tests.
Tests are unbelievably hard and it can be hard to understand him most of the time, but he grades very fair. I did learn a lot from this class, so no complaints from me.
I LOVE THIS GUY HE'S HILARIOUS. YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE FOR THIS CLASS BUT AT LEAST YOU'LL BE ENTERTAINED. HIS TESTS ARE DIFFICULT, BUT ACCOUNTING IS OVERALL ANYWAY. I JUST RECOMMEND TO MAKE SURE HE KNOWS U PERSONALLY, AND GO TO CLASS SO HE CAN SEE U PUT AN EFFORT. AND IM NOT KIDDING WHEN I SAY THAT EVERYONE RIDES THE CURVE!
Difficult tests but he curves your final grade a lot - and I mean a lot. I should have gotten a C but ended up with an A-, so you'll hear no complaints from me.
damn this class!!! extremely boring teacher. Assumes you know the material. had him for the night class and less than half the students show up. He does have a huge curve. Got a B in his class when I should have gotten a D.
I like the course.
I hate this class not because of the professor but my classmates. Was at the night class. Only a few seemed prepared for the class.
Knows his material, lectures are very good.Material is excellent, applicable.Be involved or you won’t learn. Tests are extremely difficult, material isn't so hard but tests are not straightforward, tries to trick you. Has large curve but it makes you wonder, what’s the point? Resents Finance maj. Bottom line,if you get involved you'll learn a lot.
Take his class. Professor Joh is very knowledgeable and patient. You can learn a lot in his class. An excellent professor at SDSU. He is also a very reasonable and generous grader.
wonderful slides
Just don't take the guy...you won't learn anything and he won't try to teach you. He makes you feel dumb when you answer the questions he asks incorrectly which ends up causing no class participation...accent hard to understand...he should just go be an accountant somewhere because teaching's just not his thing
2 midterms, a final, and a bunch of online quizzes. You don't really learn much in his class. It helps to go to class and then supplement the material with reading but a lot of time he doesn't teach the stuff in the book. The class is easy cuz he curves like crazy. Great for slackers but if you're an overacheiver, you'll hate him
Be preapred for the class. It's hard. Participate as much as you can. I screwed up in the exams but my participation rasied my grade a lot. You will learn a lot. He is very patient. I want to major accounting because of him.
I didn't enjoy the class. Don't bother buying the book since you will never use it. Just follow his ppt slides. Curves a lot, but his style of teaching is way off. Not very good.
Excellet lecture note. Class attendence is necessary for a goof grade.
He's hard, but all you have to do is go to class and pay attention and you'll do fine. He's always available for office hours, so basically, you get out of this class what you put in. I think he's a nice guy and a great teacher. You can't expect to have a teacher hold your hand through college.
Summer semester was very frustrating. He is very vague when it describing expectations in terms of individual and group projects. Sometimes contradicts himself. Accounting class should have had finance and stats as prerequisites. Final based on the CFA exam. If you can take it with someone else, I'd recommend it.
Nice guy, poor instructor. I saw a private accounting tutor regularly to get understandable explanations of Professor Joh's material. The tutoring was very helpful and I got an A- in the class.
More than fair grader. Show up, watch the Power Points, do the homework. Homework questions are on the exams--almost word for word. Can't expect to get it all down solid, considering all you're supposed to learn in one semester. Sometimes professors are limited by their curriculum.
This class gave the students LOTS OF WORK; 2 individual projects (which were badly time consuming), 1 group project, and final exam. Also, the teacher didn't really help because he wanted us to struggle by our own efforts although we didn't really understand how to solve the problems. Anyhow, he is SOMETIMES a generous grader.
Gun ho is a very smart guy who knows alot about Financial accounting. He would be a really good teacher if he didn't have such a thick accent! Accounting is a language on its own. We shouldn't have to decipher two different languages at once. Got an A but only cause everybody else did THAT much worse than I did (crazy curve)
Take this class during the summer session. The limited # weeks is your friend because it limits the # projects normally required during the regular semester! Professor has a good sense of humor. There is a WILDLY large curve. His final was based on the notes he sent out, about 12 questions of 50 were straight from his study questions/notes.
One of the worst teachers I have has at State. Expects you to just know everything about accounting. Did not learn a thing. Massive curve.
the worst teacher ever!!! impossible to follow the class...
Its like being in a mad tv sketch. He changes his mind about which material is relevant mid way through lecture. His slides are complicated. He is a nice guy but the topic is unclear. THere is a massive curve which is how i passed.
This professor is difficult to follow. He is not helpful and quite confusing. You will likely pass the class because he curves, but probably will not learn a thing from him.
Horrible. Unorganized. Uses his own Powerpoint slides which do not coincide with the book at all. You won't learn a thing. Good luck trying to pass your CFA without taking this course again, somewhere else. Worst prof I've had at SDSU...and that's saying something.
This guy does NOT respond to ur emails for help. When u try to talk to him after class, hes always in a hurry and makes u feel dumb. Cant understand a WORD of what hes saying in class and I'm asian myself. Pointless attending class if u cant understand, but then he gives those "pop quizzes." They need to find someone else to teach this class.
he gives easy explanations on materials covered. u don't have to read the book since the way he teaches is much more easier than the book. But somewhat hard to understand his accent. very useful class though.
The summer session of this class isn't bad, it goes by really fast. Dr. Joh is helpful if you show that you're putting in the work, he always answered my questions. The curve is a life saver though because the material is pretty subjective, so its easy to get answers wrong on tests and online assignments. Overall, great class, worth taking!
I learned a lot from this class. The professor did not afraid of discussing difficult issues such as pension. Actually this was the only course where I could learn the topic.
The only one who teaches the class. He is incredibly hard to understand, because of accent and very bad English. Don't expect to learn a lot, even if you manage to get an A. Book is not helpful. He has online assignments, 3 tests, and some in-class quizzes. I am very disappointed with this professor. He might just be the worst prof. in SDSU finance
Wow how this man has a job is beyond me! u will learn nothing and more than likely get a C like 80% of the class! Enjoy ur 4 months of torture!
I have never disliked a class, or teacher, as much as this one. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I could not understand his english. Tests were ridiculous. May not need the book, unless you're willing to teach yourself the material. If it wasn't for the extreme curve, I am sure that over 50% of the class would fail.
He's not a very good teacher. But the topic he covers is interesting and if you study the slides and the textbook carefully, you will learn a lot. And he's a very generous curver, so you don't have to be afraid to fail this class.
Good Luck with this class! Teacher is hard to understand and so is the subject. Didnt learn anything in the class. He grades on a huge curve tho. Cant believe the finance department lets him teach this class
This class is terrible...it should be called AUDITING not financial statement analysis. If you are an investor hoping to get knowledge about a company's position from it's financial statements, you will not find it here. He assumes you have access to info given to auditors, which of course you would not. The class is disorganized & useless
Worst class ever. EVER. You will learn nothing. He is totally incomprehensible. He sits in silence waiting for you to contribute then makes you feel stupid for whatever you say. Even if you had the tests ahead of time you still wouldn't know what he wanted for answers. Generous curve but total waste of time.
Avoid this class at any cost. I'm sure he's a smart guy, but he should not be teaching. You will not understand any of it and you have no way of learning anything he tests you on on your own. Oh, and you will learn absolutely nothing.
awful
Awful. Can't explain the content well. Didn't take care of students. When I wrote the email to ask him questions, he never response. When I went to his office hour, he was NOT happy and friendly.
Taking him currently. So far these comments are true. This class is awful, you will learn nothing in this class. No textbook needed. Online assignments are harder then the tests. If only State had more accounting teachers because this guy is no good.
Just awful....
Mandatory class. Oh wow. Absolutely TERRIBLE professor. I normally do really well in school (cumulative GPA: 3.6) and this class was beyond rough. Avoid this professor at all costs.
VERY tough to understand. His lectures are very boring. No one can read his hand writing. Tests do not align with his lectures. Doesn't respond to emails. Awkward office hours. Didn't learn anything. I do NOT recommend a $70 A+, Mike just freaks out b/c he can't even do the work. I got an A, figure it out and you can do the same.
Guarantee's a C if you do all of the HW assignments. The tests are impossible, but he curves it based on the highest grade. Then he curves the final grade a lot too I think. I studied like crazy and got an A. I think the curve after the final gave everyone about 5-8%. Terrible english. Mean when you ask questions. Office hours are pointless.
bad teacher. acctg 326 is already boring, but when you have a teacher you can't understand it becomes unbearable. I think he passes everyone in the class, you have to be real dumb to fail this class, i think my class was curved 15-20%. DO NOT TAKE A+ REVIEW, mike really doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to this class, waste of $
Definitely knows a lot about the subject matter. The lecture is a little dry, but he does crack a joke here and there. He doesn't always explain an assignment clearly, but is willing to answer questions. If anything is unclear, email or go into office hours. He takes the time to explain and clarify things.
super boring class. ur guaranteed a C if you do all the hw. a handful of t/f quizzes. 3 tests and a lot of hw. overall pretty easy tho. i got an A- in the class and am by no means an acctg whiz, i think he curves his tests a lot and i prolly just happened to be better than the majority of the class
Accounting is by no means easy and this class is not an exception. The Professor was very helpful to me in terms of explaining the material. I always asked questions when I dont understand during his lectures and he always take the time to explain. The professor is extremely knowledgeable. Dont be afraid of asking questions if you dont understand
Avoid at all costs. 1. he has broken english, like its very hard to actually understand what hes trying to teach you. 2. Very unorganized, wont tell you whats going to be on the test, so study everything. 3. Exams are difficult and confusing only positive would be he curves the class.
Absolutely worst teacher I have had at SDSU. Doesn't speak good English. Not helpful. Tests & quizzes are out there and quite hard. He is the only professor for this class at the moment. Just be aware, study prior, going to class is a waste of time unless he has a pop quiz. Terrible professor.
He is the only teacher unfortunately. The book will be your lifeline as you teach yourself basically. He randomly gives pop quizzes so sitting through class becomes necessary. Don't expect him to understand your questions or be able to answer them clearly. Get ready to try and learn, only for him to make tons of mistakes and make you more confused.
I thought the rest of the ACCTG Dept at SDSU was horrible. This guy is the worst. Wants to see student fail. Instructions are no where near clear or helpful. Tests are over things not covered in class or assigned reading. If you can take anyone else I would!
Worst professor I have ever taken. Only professor so expect to read the whole book to learn anything.
Dr. Joh is a great professor, but his students should show interest and their own passion in learning the coursework. If the professor sees that the student is sincerely trying to learn, he will go out of his way to support. Take this professor if you want to learn from a practical and mature teacher.
You will be teaching yourself the entire course. He has notes from an old textbook and was teaching out of that text instead of the one he assigned! Read entire ch before has cuz he doesnt follow syllabus. Study everything you can (book, powerpoint, his 'notes', Orion) otherwise youll have no idea what youre doing on exams (CURVED avg was D).Awful!
Professor Joh is not only intelligent and a good teacher, but he is kind and hilarious if you've got an easy sense of humor. In no world is this an easy course, don't care who teaches it. Yes, you'll read; yes, you'll have to practice a lot. Course builds on itself so get a base early. Use Professor Joh's acronyms, they'll come in handy.
His lectures are hard to follow (partially due to language) so if you can, read the chapter & power point before going to class. Tests are tough and to study I would recommend doing as many online practice problems in the e-book/connect as you can. The homework can take take a while and isn't worth a ton but do them for the easy points/cushion.
This class is hard no matter what, but it was worse because I couldn't understand him AT ALL. He only pays attention to part of the classroom and disregards the other sections, even if they have a question. His in class notes are confusing too. I ended up taking notes on the slides and practicing the homework questions and did ok.
Very hard to understand. Will not tell you what will be on test. Tough grader
Doesn't respond to emails. Poor at grading; posts and removes grades on blackboard without a consistency on following the syllabus, students never really knew their grade. Doesn't teach off textbook, students are continuously correcting him on the board. 90% of my class stopped going to class and learned the material on their own. Do not recommend!
Yes, you can't understand what Professor Joh says half the time but his class is not that hard. You don't have to go to class aside from a few pop quizzes. His tests are crazy hard but he grades everything on a curve so it's very easy to get an A on all his tests. If you don't like going to class twice a week and like to work on your own, take Joh.
If you show up to class and participate he will guarantee you a C. I failed every exam and somehow ended up with a B. Really nice guy, I'd recommend chatting with him after lecture or in office hours so he remembers your name.
Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad
Literally guessed on all 50 questions of final exam without studying and ended w a C in class. Dont know how and dont care.
Definitely the hardest class ever and he's the only option for ACCT326. The great thing is that he curves A LOT. His homework is time-consuming. His tests are impossible but as long as you do better than the class, you will be fine. I study like crazy and get an A. Reading the book helps a lot, his lecture in class alone won't help that much.
I'm convinced Prof Joh is actually a genius. However, he doesnt really know how to pass on his knowledge to his students very well. Class is based on exams and some group hw assignments. He curves a looooot so dont be shocked when you get a 50% raw score. He's actually a very nice guy, don't be intimidated by him!
Avoid at all costs. He is nice but quite frankly he is the worst professor i've had in my entire education. His lectures are virtually worthless. His 'in-class assignments' are basically mini quizzes that you work on by yourself. He makes exceptionally difficult exams but just curves hard. You will have to teach yourself, his presence is nonexisten
A hard class because his lectures may be confusing. There are homework assignments from the book so reading the book is important. No study guide, which makes the exams hard. Lastly, his curve helps. I failed every exam but ended up with a B- as my final grade.
Doesn't know what he is doing. Can't understand him, parrots lecture slides. 5 quizzes (midterms), 1 dropped. 10 in-class assignments (quizzes), 1 dropped. 10 hw, 1 dropped. 1 final. Didn't take 2/5 quizzes, failed other 3. Didn't take 4/10 in-class, failed the other 6. I guessed on every single question on the final, ended with a C in the class.
First of all, it is a little concerning that there are no comments in 2020 for this professor. Either the professor or this website is deleting them. I will not say anything negative about him but I will give you the details that we had to go through. He is in his mid 80s, 120 minutes to take 100 question test, took final 2 weeks ago no grade yet
His lecture videos aren't that good, I watched another professor on YT. Weekly discussion board assignments are poorly written at times and graded inconsistently. I didn't read the book, just looked over the easy connect HW assignments to study for exams. He curves, would have had a D but got a C. Just give a little bit of effort & you'll live.
Difficult to understand. Doesn't put in effort to ensure student understanding of material.
Its shocking that such a prestigious institution can have subpar professors. There is so much material that you are expected to learn, read, & comprehend on your own only for the exams to contain none of it & prof only covers a fraction of it in class. Prof makes up his own bogus exams which seems extremely unfair. Im just hoping I pass.
Awful professor DO NOT take his class. He does not teach and at lectures he's behind on his own work. Please do not take him, so you do not go through what I am currently through as well as the other students. You literally have to teach yourself for his class when it's his job to do that, please take my advice you'll thank me later.
Literally do not take his class, you will regret it. Do your best to find another professor, this man respectfully sucks.
Nice man but awful professor. He can't communicate information clearly. His lectures are irrelevant to his homework (which there's a lot of)/exams and have no structure, and his exams are extremely difficult. He curves a lot, but DO NOT take this class. If you're stuck with it, don't attend class. It's a waste of time. Learn the material yourself.
Terrible and irrelevant lectures. Test questions are taken directly from the chapter homework, with numbers changed. Study those and you should be fine. More than half the homework is a waste of time. GIGANTIC curve. Pretty sure he retired anyway so unsure if anyone will ever need to read this review, but here ya go anyway :)
I thought DeBoskey was the worst professor here at SDSU before taking this class now I realize it's this guy. Lectures are extremely confusing to follow and exams have a 50% average. He almost never responds to emails as well. Honestly, take every bad attribute of a professor and combine it into one professor and you have him.
The class average right now is a D with a curve and all exams have been 50% and lower on average. Forgot to grade half of my Tableau assignment, he doesn't communicate at all, way too much homework, etc so many things wrong here. Many students have discussed reporting him to the department he is TERRIBLE.
Gun Joh is hands down the worst professor at SDSU. His lectures are completely useless. Class averages on the exams has been 50%. He gives massive assignments with zero directions and marks you down significantly. I can not believe that he is allowed to teach at this school. Do everything you can to avoid taking Joh as your professor.
Horrible. Lectures are not structured at all. Homework heavy. Extremely difficult tests. I cannot understand his voice. Take this class somewhere else. Unfortunately, he was the only option for me and I was hoping I could pull through but I expect to retake this class next year.
Genuinely curious how this man even got hired here at SDSU. Handwrites all lecture notes which would be alright if his hand writing didn't look like ancient text. Exams have a
This teacher was honestly THE worst I've ever had. His lectures doesn't not follow along with any hw you given, nor any tests. He says he "curves" the tests but doesn't. Make sure you do ALL the hw because that'll be THE only thing to help with your grade. It's very hard to understand him since he is soft spoken. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Professor Gun-Ho Joh's ACCT326 class is challenging, but the curve helps. The lectures are dry, but the textbook and tools like Unstuck ai can make up for it. Put in the work and you'll likely pass.
