HARD class... definitely not one that you take for fun. ponce will help you as much as he can if you go to his office hours but lecture is very unclear because he goes at such a rapid pace. good luck if you take this course... you'll need it
one of the best math professors i've had in college, they're hard to come by here at UCSB. definitely knew his stuff and tried to help you figure things out.
A nice man but a bad teacher. Trying to make his final easier, he messed everything.
ppl said he was a hard teacher, but he ended up not being bad at all. his lectures r good, does plenty of examples, and his tests r just like his old ones
He's one of the world's famous mathematicians. He's a super teacher, and always willing to answer your questions and help you learn.
This was the worst Class I took while at UCSB. This horrible professor left me with very little understanding of the subject that came back to haunt me in later undergraduate class and later Graduate work at another University. Worst professor EVER!!!!!!
His tests are not hard, but he cant teach. He taught so fast and not in order. Even he is very willing to teach, but might confuse students.
The only thing you will get from lecture is the phrases "Do you understang" and "Do you get me", neither which the class can answer with a yes. His lectures are so confusing that he doesnt even know what is going on. Oh and doesnt believe in partial credit, which was awesome when there are only 3 questions on the test.
Can't teach. Half the class would get confused and walk out during lecture. Very easy tests, but NO partial credit so make sure not to misplace a negative sign or it will be 0/9 for one of the exam's 3 problems. go to CLAS and take him for easy tests, not to really understand the mathematics
What ever math he learned, it doesnt have anything to do with math 5a, because he has no idea what is going on in class. You can teach urself better by flat out reading the book. CLAS is a must.
One of the best teachers i've ever had. Clear in explination and logical deduction. His conclusions are sound and his attitude is that which he wants the students to focus on the subject as opposed to getting all the notes down right. However, deff. not for those without a serious interest in math and advanced knowledge.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!! SO dumb you can barely understand him through his accent and speed talking. Easy midterms and hard final. This class was a joke and so is ponce. no help in office hours either. I asked to see my final at the beginning of the next quarter and he told me to come back to his office hours even though he wasn't doing anything else
Very heavy accent. Very hard to understand but then you get you used to it. Material was very hard to understand (aka learn on your own) but then you get used to it. Overall, tests are easy but not very forgiving because you can check all of your solutions. As long as you go to section and stick through it, the class is easy.
i really really loved this teacher. i was sitting in clas yesterday and realized i only have three more lecutres with him and was sad. he has an accent, but what math teacher doesnt? he really thoroughly explains things... over and over, but i helps to get it stuck in your head. ponce really is the best! take him!!! :) <3

Great professor! His accent is thick; however, after a while you get used to it. Thoughly enjoyed the class. He repeats the topics over and over so that you barely have to study for the test. He also teaches you to check your work. This helps beacuse you know exactly how well you've done immediately after the test.
ACCENT WAS HARD AT FIRST TO GET USED TO...TESTS WERE WHAT HE COVERED IN LECTURE
He's sometimes hard to understand because of his accent, but not a big deal in scope of the class. He does lots of examples in class so go to lectures and take notes as exams are very similar to what he does in lectures.
Could learn better from a carrot. Nearly impossible to understand. Not approachable. Could not teach if his life depended on it. Cannot do his own problem,"If I was younger and had a paper I Could do the problem" is a quote from his own lecture. Cannot give a straight answer, his answers were either "not explicitly" or "not implicitly."
He's the first professor I've had since transferring from JC that didn't totally suck. Granted, most of my classes have been UD physics, still. He's extremely clear during his lectures, and he goes at a reasonable place, so you'll have time to listen and take decent notes. Exams were very easy and straightforward.
He always put problems we did before on the test.I personally dislike it. You can get good grade w/o actually learning anything, just by figuring out (or simply remember the structure of the proofs) all the hw and review problems. He has accents, but he is trying to clarify very hard. Nice in office hour, but he doesn't give a damn after the final.
This man is amazing! It's true his accent is thick, but i think he realizes this and he goes over concepts over and over so you'll definitely get it eventually. He actually turns out to be a much better prof than many in the department here.. on top of that his tests are pretty easy. The no partial credit thing isn't that bad.
pretty decent math prof. hw was hard but tests were doable. make sure you stay on top of this class or it will be a ton to learn at the end.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. Just don't do it. If you decide that you absolutely need to, you will regret it. The class level should not have been as difficult as he made it. Extremely confusing and makes mistakes often. No calculator usage and no note cards. No curve. No extra credit. You'd better seriously love calc before you take this.
Awful class. Never take this class. If you have to take it with Ponce, good luck I suggest taking CLAS and go to every section. Lectures are more confusing than anything and are pointless. Learn out of the book because he isn't clear in lecture.
Skips steps, doesn't explain his logic, moves too quickly, heavy accent, avoid.
Has a very thick accent. Doesn't teach well. Should generally avoid the class. Final was extremely difficult.
I seriously do not understand the people that said this class was hard. The class was very well organized and the professor was always glad to help durring office hours. Exams couldn't have been made more simple and straight forward, and I doubt that you will find an easier prof. for 3b.
This professor has got to be one of the worst at UCSB. He was incoherent, confused, and didn't even explain the concepts of each lesson during lecture. Avoid taking this class with him.
I couldn't understand anything this man said because of his incredibly thick accent. If you want to pass this class memorize his stupidly hard examples. those were the hardest part of his tests. You need to study A LOT outside of class if you want to pass.
Absolutely horrible professor. He doesn't even know the subject matter while teaching. He messed up problems on the board multiple times and never even went back to see where he went wrong. It was amazing how as the quarter progressed, I saw more and more seats becoming empty. It was easier reading the book than listening to this idiot teach.
AVOID. Worst professor I have ever taken. Hard to understand, very unclear in exactly what he wants students to study for exams. AVOID. Pretty much independent study, and TAs weren't much use due to the fact they had horrible guidance from the professor.
He's hard to follow because he doesn't really explain what he does, he just does it. But if you take notes and actually study them you'll do fine. I got a C on the midterm (raw score), but then I rocked the final and still got an A. You just have to do a lot of independent studying.
Lectures were okay, he went kinda fast. Pretty good about office hours though, very helpful. Expect to study on top of lectures and book!
Great teaching style for those who learn through visual examples. He provided good intuition for tough concepts through excellent examples during lecture. His teaching approach for linear algebra was a bit different from that of other professors, but I feel that I couldn't have learned more from anyone else. Definitely recommended.
4B is tough as it is, and Ponce's accent doesn't help much. He teaches by giving a lot of examples but there is no order of organization to his lectures (which are just chalk on the board) so it ends up being confusing. He doesn't like to give partial credit even though all the tests are free response. Hopefully you get an amazing TA!
couldn't stand going to lectures. very disorganized, lots of examples but no structure. never knew what we were supposed to be learning. try to get a good ta
Tries to teach material solely through complex, unorganized examples, all while speaking with a barely intelligible accent. Don't trust the homework, or even the lectures, as his tests will actually be on things he spent 2 minutes talking about. On tests, be prepared for the most complex questions he can think up (pun intended).
A lot of people didn't like his lectures, but I thought they were very helpful. However, he gives almost no communication about anything - what's on the finals, what the curve will be, etc. The practice problems he gave weren't very related to the test and some were not solvable. Also, his tests have no partial credit.
CLASS 4B NOT 5A!! So this class was a unique one to say the least. The Midterm was so easy and straightforward, 4 Questions with some partial credit. I literally got a 100%! But the final was freaking insane and out of this world and you need above a 50% on it which is harder than getting a 100 on the midterm. His final is tricky, be ready for it
Ah Ponce, possibly the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures were incoherent, the midterm was do-able but the final was insane. He originally stated you needed a 50% on it to pass the class but he posted the solutions & I know I got 40%, which means everyone failed and the curve was insane. Go to CLAS, you'll need all the help you can get.
Lectures were incoherent and super hard to understand. Midterm was doable, but the final was insanely hard. Grades very hard and doesn't give out partial credit. Avoid at all costs.
Had a 100 percent in the class until the final and ended up getting a N. Could never fully understand his accent which made the lectures essentially useless. He made the class much more difficult than it needed to be.
Ponce is very unique in the UCSB math department. While most professors seem approachable in class, and intimidating in office hours, Ponce is the opposite. He goes very fast, and is a little hand wavy sometimes, but he cares more than any other teacher that you're learning. Go to office hours, ask him to explain things in lecture, you'll do fine.
Pretty decent overall. Sometimes he goes really fast and doesn't explain what he's doing. He also makes a lot of mistakes
Ponce is an incredible professor. His lectures are very thorough and if you read and understand the notes you can get an A in the class. Tests are not hard but beware his harsh grading and make sure to provide every detail when preforming a proof for him. Understanding is a far greater ally in his class than memorization. One of the best lecturers.
Fantastic professor. He REALLY knows his stuff and he focuses on trying to help us develop a very intuitive understanding of the material overall. Very challenging homework (can submit it in groups), but his exams are consequently a breath of fresh air (for 118, at least). Super helpful in office hours. He really wants everyone to get the material.
Ponce is a very respected professor. But he is really a tough grader. Be care of that, besides he is really helpful in office hours. But try to take care of any details of the homework.
He's really good at explaining the material and the overall class is easy so long as you pay attention.
Lectures are hard to get through and the homeworks are pretty tough. However, the quizzes are fairly simple and the exams are just as easy as the quizzes.
He had one midterm and it was after the drop date, which was less than ideal for a lot of people. Difficult to follow his lectures and understand his accent, so if you have to take his class, don't take the 8am. Homework is long and hard and there's a lot of it. I had to drop the class late for health reasons, but I'm very glad I got out of there.
Prof Ponce is the worst professor on this campus. He grade ridiculously difficult and has absolutely no sympathy for his students. His accent is horribly difficult to understand and he lacks any recognition that his students have questions or dont understand his lectures in which he doesnt describe anything or give clear examples.
his lectures arent as clear so i decided to teach myself the content. hard to follow lectures and rarely stops for questions. homework varies by week but it took a considerable amount of time to do.
Worst professor ever. I understand 4A is supposed to be hard but he just made it HARDER. His accent is so bad that there is no way you can follow without teaching yourself before lectures. I also think it's funny how he always asks "Is this clear" or "are you with me" but never clarifies anything even if the whole class was like "No!" AVOID HIM.
Spending a good amount of time on the homework is the only way I learned anything. My TA is honestly the only way I got through his class, GO TO SECTION- attendance is graded and helps. Lecture is very difficult to follow and he often doesn't take questions even though he'll ask for them. A lot of self-learning to be expected.
HE IS TERRIBLE
One of the worst prof ever, spent the last 3 weeks on learning a very hard chapter but never tested it on Final. Midterm is okay but Final worth 50% of your grade and it is hard so be prepared for it. Once again, try your best to avoid him unless you have abosolutely no choices
His midterm was relatively easy and straightforward but his final was so much more difficult than I could've imagined. His no partial credit policy for his tests make getting a good grade extremely difficult. Not really much of a curve at the end of the quarter either. Hardest class I've taken at UCSB.
Ponce will be one of the worst math profs you take at sb. The midterm was straightforward but final was difficult. My friends and I studied for almost a week and got a C+ on it. Theres no partial credit so one little mistake can cost you about 7 points. Also, he mentioned the final was going to be conceptual two lectures before taking it. Avoid!
Since lectures weren't mandatory and at 8AM, I didn't go to all of them but I read the textbook, went to section, and did the homework. Ended up with a C+. The final was way harder than the midterm, which I didnt really expect from what the professor and my ta were telling me beforehand.
Overall I'd say Ponce is a very poor teacher. His accent makes it hard to understand and his handwriting is so illegible even he cant read it most of the time. The class itself is super straight forward, but there is one midterm and one final and they have combined 10 questions and NO partial credit at all. If you can get another professor.
The grading for this class was pretty ridiculous as there was no partial credit for the only midterm we had, not sure about the final. The midterm was 4 questions so making two stupid mistakes resulted in a high F. Luckily hw and section attendance was waited as heavily as the midterm. Definitely not clear about what would and wouldnt be tested on
tbh, His tests are not that hard. Just study the textbook and make sure you understand the homework problems. Go to CLAS if you can. I could of getting an A if I can get one more question right though.
The accent is a problem, but if you take lectures and read notes carefully, you can get a good grade. He always says the tests are hard, but actually they are fair, and the topics are covered in examples. More practice and participation are important.
Bad lecturer, had to buy the textbook for online homework even though I didn't need the book. Just used CLAS and got a good grade.
Just never ever take his class.
He had his lectures pre-written (sloppily too) which made it difficult to read. Worse, he went through them SUPER fast. When answering questions, he just wanted to quickly get through them. Sections were mandatory and helped a little with the grade. Each test (there were 2) was easy in concept but one miscalculation fudges up the whole grade.
Awesome prof, he really made sure people understood the material and encouraged questions. Easy to get an A or B if you go lecture and read the textbook. The tests were easy, often straight from the textbook and never unexpected material. Would recommend for upper div math/conceptual classes.
Dr. Ponce i s absolutely brilliant, and was one of the best professors I have ever had here at UCSB. He is very helpful and cares that his students learn. The exams were not easy, but very doable, and nothing unexpected or unfair showed up. There was a large amount of difficult homework, but it's weighted high and is fair. I will miss Ponce.
i will never take his class! I even don't know what he is saying at class that one day I heard "cilo" which I don't know what it is . after half of the class I noticed that he said is "zero".... bad professor
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. He is difficult to understand, writes lecture slides as he goes, always sounds annoyed. One time I asked a question in class, he talked down on me for asking a dumb question. Had to buy a $100 homework system I only used for that quarter. Material was hard but he looks like he doesn't care about his students.
I think he might bad at lower div. math class and also have heavy accent but look at his syllabus, 50% of HW is def. worth it. though HWs are tough to do so go to his OH he will show you how to crack them down. Final is not tough but the grading might be strict if you are not clear. Recommend for MATH8 and might take 108A with him again
Was worried to take him bc of his ratings, but he was seriously the most caring and helpful math prof I've had so far. HW was worth 50% of grade which was nice and when it was difficult he went over anything you needed in OH. No midterm, occasional quizzes that were super fair, and final was long but not too bad. Excited to have him again in fall.
Ponce is definitely one of my favorite professors. Weekly homework might be a bit rough and his lectures are fast paced and difficult, but tests are EXTREMELY fair. He really cares about his students, and if you visit in OH, he gives careful answers to your questions. Do his midterm & final practice problems and you will ace any test he gives.
Lectures are engaging. Tests are things we have practiced a lot. As long as you fully understand the concepts and know how to utilize them, his class is definitely not hard.
hard homework, easy mid and final
I love prof Ponce. Gave practice midterms and final that were very similar to the real thing. He's extremely fair. Homework is kinda long, but utilize his office hours and you'll be fine. I can't wait to have him again.
- easy exams - really good lecturing style. Happy to slow down or re-explain - will straight up do some homework problems during office hours - there was a textbook for the class but he didn't teach or assign homework from it
If you can manage getting up at 8am, this is a solid class. Very good lectures and he always leaves room for questions. Although the homeworks were difficult, the exams were very fair. Plus he's very accessible in office hours. Attendance is sometimes taken, and he sometimes gave quizzes with about a week's notice.
Terrible class; professor refused to follow a textbook, he just said we can use any book but none of them were relevant. Homeworks were unrelated to lecture. He kept saying we haven't learned anything difficult so homework and exams should be easy; take his class if you want to be called stupid on a regular basis I guess.
legend. One of the best for upper divs.
Horrible professor, hard to understand, terrible handwriting, and lectures are dense and often hard to understand. 2 Midterms and a Final worth 50% of your grade, only take if you have to, otherwise avoid
Went to 1 lecture and then just went to CLAS 2x a week. He was just looking at another professor's slides and figuring it out as he went along. Terrible lecture. The 2 midterms were online and the tests were the same for the entire class. I haven't taken the final yet and it is 50% of your grade (and you need at least 50% to pass the class)
Despite the efforts of the TA's and the Math Lab, myself and a lot of my peers struggled very hard in this class. The lecture's are hard to follow and the handwriting is very bad. Broad concepts that are critical for this course are not explained at all, only dense math material. The tests so far are fair, but if you fall behind you're toast.
Prof Ponce has a thick accent that can be hard to understand (especially if you are new to linear algebra and its vocab), and his handwriting is sloppy cursive. He gives 20 hw problems a week, however, lectures are often too concept-based or unrelated so you'll find you'll assistance understanding the problem types. The final is 50% of your grade.
8AM lectures were not helpful, so it doesn't matter if you go or not. I learned the entire course content from YouTube. The final was weighed 50%, literally thought I was going to fail because I do not know how to do any of the practice questions he sent. But turns out the questions on the final were just direct computations! Pretty chill overall.
Ponce gets a bad rep for his lectures/accent, which is mostly justified. Despite this, he's a very chill professor who's lectures can be worth going to if they are not at 8am. Prepare to mostly self study, however. Homework load isn't too bad (20 q's/week), and if you have just a basic understanding of the material, the tests should be very easy.
Professor Ponce is NOT a good lecturer when it comes to this course. I and most others I knew in this course used CLAS, section, and YouTube to learn the content. However, his grading was very fair. He posted lecture material on Canvas, had two do-able online midterms, and though the final was 50% of our final grade it was very straightforward.
went to lecture once. honestly depends on how well your TA prepares you for exams. YH is an actual goat
Lectures are useless, he uses another's professor's slides, which he learns WHILE teaching. It is better to learn the material through self-studying the slides he posts. CLAS Canvas course is VERY useful, so sign up for that. Two easy midterms online, and a 50% final. Practice final was VERY hard, and not at all representative of the actual final.
Midterms were easy, final was also easy but had no partial credit and very few problems. This causes so much unnecessary stress and puts too much emphasis on answers instead of understanding. Lectures were actually very useful, but only in the last month of class. He is not approachable and definitely does not care much about lower div classes.
Gustavo Ponce's lectures can be quite hard to follow if you are trying to take notes while listening. I'd recommend just listening during the lecture and taking notes afterward. As long as you can grasp the problems and understand the homework, the midterm and final exam will be easy for you.
Super nice guy but lectures felt a bit all over the place and he did not explain small but key ideas that really made studying quite difficult. I don't think I learned much from this class even though I went to lecture and did HW but if I had kept up better I could have easily gotten an A because the final was light.
Lectures are incomprehensible, with completely illegible handwriting. Professor makes little effort to communicate with students. Homework is annoyingly lengthy. The only redeeming factor for this professor was a very easy final.
Ponce's lectures can be hit-or-miss, but the class is manageable if you self-study and use resources like CLAS, section, and Unstuck AI. Exams are fair, just focus on understanding the material rather than memorizing.
Terrible professor that only teaches with 'this and thats". I went to most lectures, but generally got nothing out of it. Would not recommend if you are trying to learn the material.
HW is not similar to midterms or exams. Focus on the examples he does in lecture and worksheet from section. Ponce isn't a bad guy but his teaching is impossible to follow. Online midterms and final is 40%
Overall not that bad of a class - lectures were kind of hard to follow, but examples in the latter half of the quarter were helpful. Would recommend going to math lab + TA office hours. 3 midterms that were online and pretty straightforward. The homework was honestly harder than both the midterms and final. Final was worth 40% but light.
super hard to follow during lectures, ended up not going to them. relied on TA's review and just watched youtube videos. Pounce seems nice though. midterms and final were super easy they were just basic questions on the topics you learn. no conceptual questions, final was 5 questions but no partial credit. he curved the midterms and final.
A horrible lecturer who just reads slides that aren't his + he has an accent (chill/nice guy tho). TA was horrible, was passive-aggressive & always boasted about how lucky we were to have him. 3 online midterms (ChatGPT). Homework was 20 problems/week which were hard (ChatGPT). Self-study class, I got a B even tho I barely put in the effort.
Terrible lectures, I ended up just going to CLAS and self studying by the end of the quarter. The final and midterms were very easy, with basic questions about the material. Easy to succeed in terms of grade if you just want the credit but would not recommend if you actually want to learn the material.
Very easy class with a generous curve at the end. Make sure to check work well for midterms and final because there was no partial credit at all. The homework was weekly and pretty difficult.
Ponce is the worst math professor I have seen. His final was easy in retrospect, but didn't grade for partial credit. I never went to his lectures because when I did, I couldn't understand what he was doing. You can easily self study but avoid him at all costs. I am a math major and he is an awful professor.
I went to every lecture, but didn't gain much. Occasionally, he would mention a topic that may show up on the midterm. A large lecture issue was the computational errors. (multiple times per lecture) Also, even my TA didn't understand one of the homework problems. The final was 40% and no partial credit, but the problems and curve were fair.
While the class is relatively easy to get through, the homework was frustratingly long and I never really got what he was talking about in lecture. He works through things fast and doesn't spend time explaining much. I know a friend who went to lecture once the whole quarter, studied the week before the final, and got an A. The final is worth 40%..
This man might be the worst lecturer OAT. I did not gain a single thing from him reading off the slides, and 3blue1brown carried this class. He also got emasculated when he couldn't solve problems, saying things like "i don't usually do these computations." Lin alg is fascinating and he didn't convey this at all.
Very thick accent and mumbles a lot, so sometimes lectures were hard to understand. Explained things in a way that was usually more complicated than needed (if he did explain concepts). Wanted students to do well. Math TA saved me, best I've had. Literally did not know anything that was going on and got an A. Still don't know what a vector is.
