Blaylock is the man!
Nice guy but doesn't do a well enough job teaching the material in class. There's so much stuff left unexplained, and the test are extremely hard. I just wish he knew how to explain things without rushing through the material.
He was a nice guy and tried to keep the lectures fun, but he always ends up explaining to the geeks in class.....its more like a disscussion section than a class. If he explained things as new material, rather than revision like , then he would be a great teacher.
Doesnt do a good job of teaching, mostly just presents PRS questions to try and fool you. Exams are insanly hard and questions seem to come out of the blue. He has great demos though
This guy is probably one of the nicest, funniest professors you'll have. However, his teaching style doesn't really get to everyone. If you are extremely smart and already understand Physics, you will know what he is talking about. Otherwise, good luck on the exams. You'll probably fail all of them.
He's the man. His demonstrations are funny as hell.
Very nice guy and very willing to help accomodate students with problems or difficulties.
He is brilliant! His lectures are clear, engaging, entertaining, and thought provoking! The work load is relatively easy, and completely worth it. Notes are easy, since every lecture's powerpoint presentation is also online! Do yourself a favor and take at least one class with him! Just brilliant!!
Everyone I know likes him, and he is clear, helpful and entertaining. But I can't help feeling like the class was more of a show than a session for learning. He isn't serious a lot, and you may like this, but if you're into something other than analogies to monkes falling from trees, you might want to try elsewhere. He's just really out there.
Awesome demonstrations. Probably my favorite teacher so far.
Class was very interesting and wasnt bad to attend, but his lectures dont really help at all vs. homework.
Great class, very interesting
The scale on the class is VERY fair. Midterms not too hard, final was tough though. I ***ked myself, after the first test I stopped going to class. Just go to class and do the homework, it's the easiest 25% of your grade you can earn.
guys mad funny lol
A skilled professor who really knows the subject he teachers, Blaylock is one of the most fun professors i've ever had. His demos. are really great! The important thing about the class is its fairness for homework and tests. They were not hard, but challenging.
Really enthusiastic and valuable professor, and he definitely knows what hes talking about. Agreed, the tests were a little challenging, but not impossible, and grading was always very fair. I approve, and would recommend him as a professor to anyone.
Guy Blaylock is alright. For 151 he is pretty fair. Just do all the homeworks and readings on time and you should be fine.
OMG such a good teacher. I actually PAID ATTENTION and actually WAS INTERESTED. Complete opposite of Professor Corrada. I FAILED this last semester with Corrada as my teacher, and now I'm getting A's on exams that are challenging, but fair. I can't say how much this guy rocks. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!
the man. hes real sarcastic, if you enjoy that kind of humor you'll love the class cuz he spends most of the time ripping on people who give stupid answers
Great teacher, tries his best to teach a tough subject. Has homework online that is worth 20% so read the book and do all the homeworks and you should do well on the midterms and final. Blaylock will warn you at the beginning of the semester if you slack off on the readings and you'll fall behind, and hes very right.
enthusiastic professor, teaches very well. has a good sense of humor and an interesting personality. i love this guy!
Great teacher
Very good professor. Was always prepared and very funny. An interesting class to go to.
Coolest teacher I've ever had. Does all kinds of crazy experiments during class. He is very good with his subject matter and is never without an answer to student questions. Makes a hard subject interesting.
Funny guy, good demos. But I just didn't really get a lot from the lectures. A lot of people seemed to like him more than I did. And get ready to buy a new laptop when you throw yours out of the window out of frustration from Mastering Physics. But at least you get a cheat sheet for each exam.
He is very smart, friendly, and overall a great prof. He makes mechanics interesting with fun demo. Mastering physics is hard but going to his office hours help a lot. Make sure to read the book if you don't know mechanics otherwise you will get lost.
He treats class like a performance. He will occasionally do fun demonstrations. You must go to lecture because of PRS. This class is very easy.
I had almost no physics background going into this class. As a result I thought it was extremely difficult. He goes off on a lot of irrelevant tangents that will confuse you even more if you don't know the material. If you a PS gen-ed, take 131 instead.
He treats class like a performance. As long as PRS questions are answered, they count for full credit (5% of grade). His grading scale is favorable. He scaled down my lab grades though. If you've taken physics in high school, this class should be a breeze for you.
Blaylock is a smart guy and definitely knows his stuff. He leads class discussions well and lets students participate often. He will help if you have a question and does cool demos so class is definitely worth your time.
Guy is the man, I just slacked off in his class and once you're behind in physics you're bankrupt! xP
Really funny guy, great teaching style. Makes everything clear in his explanations. Best Professor ever!
I had high expectations for this class. I had a great first impression because he was funny and knew how to keep me attentive. He is very likable. As the semester is going along, I have grown to dread the class. He digresses far too much instead of using up all valuable time for learning. The tests are much different from what he focuses on most.
Blaylock is awesome. He interacts with the class and performs experiments to help students understand the material. He's very funny and helpful. It is a lecture so the class is big, but he does a good job handling it.
He is a very interesting guy but his slides are very late compared to when the homework is due and when he asks to read the chapter. But once he gets to the powerpoint he makes sure people understand the problems that will be on the test. Overall great guy and best Physics 151 teacher. Better than Boris.
He's a good professor in general, he can really inspire interest in the subject, but if you want to do well be prepared to do a lot of learning outside of class because the lectures are pretty vague sometimes. I didn't take physics in high-school so this class was a challenge, but if you do all the homework's and go to class always you'll be fine.
Difficult. I took AP Physics in hs and enjoy the subject. I only managed to receive a C+ .. and that's only because the class has a big curve. Blaylock, although he is VERY entertaining, he doesnt use class time well; he spends lots of time on clicker questionsand asking the class "what we think". The labs may save you. Still, Blaylock is magical..
That class was so hard! He made it interesting and had extra help available. If you work hard, it's not impossible to do well.
This guy is awesome an awesome lecturer. He won't explain step-by-step each problem though because you're really expected to do the reading. If you haven't taken AP, definitely take notes on the textbook. I didn't take AP, but I'm doing way better than I expected just by keeping up with the readings and doing the assign. and pract. exams.
Classes are very interesting but the homework is very inconsistent to the classes. he often does not teach what is on the homework.
Professor Blaylock is hilarious and is very clear when he teaches. He gives demonstrations on the subjects that we are learning, and uses himself as the test dummy, often slamming himself into walls and such. Attendance is not mandatory, but it is recommended to understand the difficult curriculum. Tests are very hard, do not cram hours before!
As a ps gen-ed, I took this class only having some knowledge in physics. I assumed since it was a 100 level it would be more basic than 131 or 151-not so. The professor picks and chooses slides from 151 and 131 and present them without much explanation, expects you to know what he's talking about without introducing background on topic.
Guy explains physics concepts really well, but he doesn't really show you how to solve actual problems. The tests are really hard! You will not pass by doing just homework alone. Be ready to read the book and do end of chapter questions for no credit in order to study, because this class is going to be a major pain!
Guy is a smart funny guy. He shows you a lot of fun experiments and knows his stuff. His exams are extremely hard, harder than practice problems in the textbook. If you never took physics before, don't take this class if he's teaching it.
Guy seems like a chill dude and everything but he is an awful teacher. My high school physics teacher explained things better than he did, and even after putting countless hours into studying, his tests were impossible. I am an engineering major so I'd like to say I know my stuff. His class was the only below A class I had.
Blaylock is a def a genius, but cannot explain enough for most non-physics majors looking 2 take Physics 121 to fulfill their PS requirement. I was not overly confused at lectures, I was; however, puzzled by the poor online homework and lecture highlight grading on the part of the TA's. BTW, not paying for 3 textbooks as a non-physics major...
He is a funny dude.. but his teaching is more conceptual rather than teaching HOW to do the problems. the tests are pretty tough but if you do enough practice problems and make sure to study you will be fine. (I tested out of this class but decided to take it because it directly applied to my major)
AMAZING guy. He inspired interest in physics for me which was amazing. His lectures are awesome but you need to read the book. Tests are tough but doable, excellent professor he just has a hard class to teach! Also they allow sheet sheets but study and don't simply rely on them. Physics requires lots of in depth understanding not memorizing.
Prof. Blaylock is an entertaining and inspiring guy. He has great demonstrations and makes you interested in physics. The tests are challenging, but that is not his fault, you need to have an understanding of physics rather than know how to do certain types of problems. You get a cheat sheet on the exams which is useful for formulas, but that's it.
Blaylock is one of the best teachers at UMass. However, this class has some pretty tough tests and if you don't stay on top of learning the material, you will not have a good time. He really shines when students ask questions. His demos are also super cool. Physics is hard but Blaylock is fantastic. Also, MasteringPhysics for HW sucks.
Guy is really good at getting physics under your skin and making you think beyond the academic study - test - move on mentality. He gives demonstrations that are inspirational and fun, and makes you think about the concepts. That being said, the tests were without a doubt the hardest tests I've ever done in my life.
Great guy, lectures are very average. Tests in this class are half about reading the question correctly and making a good cheat sheet. This makes the class a little frustrating when you know the material but the test is full of trick questions.
Undergrad TAs grade your papers without any rubric or grading criteria (do you trust?). Half the TAs look more at your grammar while the other half look at the actual physics. You have to write the term papers with no drafts, just an outline due in one week then a 2000-3000 paper due the next. If you honestly love physics, then go for it.
Physics 118 Energy & Society is extremely difficult for non-science majors. There is a somewhat lengthy homework assignment due every Thursday and it consistently has nothing to do with what it taught in class, or what is in the textbook - you'll end up Googling EVERYTHING. Blaylock is unaccessible and unhelpful. I regret taking this class.
Energy and Society is a gen ed class for nonscience majors. The material itself is not difficult (basic high school level physics with simple algebra). Despite the easiness of the material, the class is unnecessarily difficult. Unorganized lecture slides, unclear grading material for very long weekly hw and unfair test questions. Dont take with him
WORST CLASS EVER. Took this to fulfill a PS gen ed and it is the biggest regret of my life. Nothing in the "textbook" has anything to do with the homework. This class relies on you Googling everything. He even asks you to Google things instead of teaching it himself. Your homework is graded by TAs that are never in class. It is literally hell.
Failed this class the first time around and had to retake it a year later. My favorite course both times. Blaylock has the driest sense of humor and never laughs at his own jokes. Worked with leaders in his field yet doesn't take himself too seriously. Just go to the homework helps and office hours, submit hrw on time and you'll get an A
I am not a science-inclined person so admittedly a lot of what Prof. Blaylock was talking about went right over my head, but he was simply a nice, funny, enthusiastic guy which made his class a surprising delight. There was a fair amount of writing in this class, which didn't bother me much, but might be alarming for some.
Blaylock's got a good way of teaching the course and explaining such difficult concepts (his lectures and demonstrations are great). He's helpful outside of class (pro tip: go to the homework sections) and it's clear that he wants you to pass. I'm not a science person, and while this course was a lot of work, I really enjoyed it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless its required. Im currently taking this as a GenEd and I could not have picked a worse class. Blaylock really does care about his lectures, but not your grades. the homework has no relation to is lectures or the book, and you have to google everything (which I a lot harder than it seems in this class) 0/10 recommend
Really boring lecturer, is unable to convey material clearly & assigns a ton of HW. There are mandatory weekly essays (1000 words) recapping what was discussed in lecture + midterm + final paper (2500 words each). I had to teach myself the material bc lectures and readings did not correspond/make sense to me . This class shouldn't be a Gen Ed.
Prof. Blaylock is by far the best teacher I have every had in my life. His lectures were truly inspiring and I actually enjoyed going to class for the first time in my life. I am not at all science inclined, but this class felt completely different to me. There is a lot of homework but it was definitely manageable and he offers homework sessions.
Has fair methods of working in class. Go to class, doing the problems with your team and TA will genuinely help you. He doesn't teach though. Also, if you do well, and if your team does well, you get 10 extra points. Never turn in an assignment if you weren't at lab, he will find out from TA's. Academic Dishonesty will screw you over a bit. 8/10!
Guy is my favorite professor I've ever had. He has a good sense of humor andclearly loves his field and it shows. That being said his class does require some effort, participation isn't required but it really helps your own understanding. In his class there truly are no stupid questions and he relishes the chance to go more in depth to help clarify
Prof. Blaylock is a great teacher, and his Energy and Society is amazing. The homework sessions were very helpful in explaining the math questions. Readings were on Moodle, so no need for textbook purchase. Don't be intimidated by the title of the course, it's actually mind boardening, and the math was easy. International student friendly!
Blaylock is a super inspiring and smart individual. Im not a scientist but he made me want to be one in this course. The course itself is super difficult but Guy does a great job at making sure you understand the concepts. Definitely attend TA office hours cause they will give feedback on your papers
Professor Blaylock is an amazing individual who really got me to get super interested in Physics. It is clear that he does not teach this course for the sake of it but because he actually cares about this field. He definitely changed my views on how to be sustainable and he was an excellent professor with some good humor.
Amazing teacher, lots of passion for what he teaches. Weekly homework assignments and frequent group projects, but no tests. Grade heavily inflated through 10% homework boost and lots of points relying on group-mate participation rubrics. Often people slack on group projects so you have a way to punish them for it by giving them a bad grade.
Guy gives great lectures, and you can tell he really cares about this subject. Pretty group project heavy, but he gives you the chance to tell him who isn't doing their work. Homework is also pretty difficult and lengthy, but the TAs are great and offer help sessions weekly. One of the harder classes for a PS req, but I enjoyed it!
He is very passionate about what he teaches, but his class is extremely hard. The homeworks are long and graded on accuracy, and the exams are by far the hardest ones I have ever taken. The TA's hold office hours that I highly recommend going too.
This has to be the most mundane class the physics department at UMass has to offer. By far does not meet the standards necessary for it to be a 500 level class. Instead of furthering your understanding of quantum mech, this class has you read a paper a week and have pseudo-philosophical discussion at the end. Sometimes it does physics.
Professor Blaylock is an amazing and funny human being, but with that being said, his class was the opposite of amazing. Professor's sense of humour was the only thing making the lectures bearable at all. The homework assignments while weekly, were insanely difficult and didn't have to do with material covered in class at all.
I took AST105: Weather and Our Atmosphere with Guy. For material that is difficult by nature, he does a pretty darn good job teaching it. He is caring, passionate, and clearly excited to educate his students. His lectures are quite funny, and for someone who is not super interested in astronomy, I almost always enjoyed his lectures.
Astron 105: good + clear prof, lectures are engaging and he's really funny, 3 exams w 25 mc, lowest grade counts for 1/2, weekly reading and hw, not too bad tho. Pretty tough exams imo, biggest tip I can give is to pay attention to what he says rather than take notes. He posts all his slides. You'll prob understand the material more by listening
I actually took physics 281 with Guy and it went great. He was funny and honest. The more you are wiling to participate the better the class will be. Grading is extremely fair. Would definitely take another one of his courses.
He is a funny lecturer, and he rounds up HW, which is 40% of your grade, by 10%, which is very lovely. Tests are complex and worded weirdly but definitely do able. I also missed a bunch of lectures, but it is an excellent class and should be impossible to fail if you do the work as a gen ed.
do not take this class if you're looking for an easy PS gen ed. It doesn't matter if there is no lab attached to this class, do nottttt take it. exams are worth over 50% of your final grade. so it doesn't matter how well u do on the thousands of hw assignments, u do badly on the exams, u FAIL. And the cherry on top is the exams are short and HARD.
DO NOT TAKE. Signed up for Physics 100 as a gen-ed and had the most miserable semester of school because of this class.
Guy is so funny and the lectures were very interesting. HOWEVER probably the hardest class I've ever taken. The homework is once a week and 45% of your grade but the TA's grade it extremely unfair and makes it almost impossible to get a 100. The exams are 50% of your grade and they are so difficult and you never know what's it gonna be on.
Guy is a great professor. Lectures are interesting, full of demonstrations that keep you engaged along with his sense of humor. However, the exams are 20 multiple choice questions, so if you mess up a few questions, you grade suffers greatly. Would not recommend for a gen ed as it can be a struggle.
Guy is the goat. Pedagogy is super respectable and fair. Course material and lectures are engaging with genuinely useful real-world applications. If you do the work, take lecture notes, and think critically, then you'll do fine. Just make sure you're interested in the subject and good at MCQs: two 25-question MCQ exams are 50% of your grade . . .
If I could give Guy a zero I would. Lectures were mediocre at best and cringy at worst. Homeworks are worth 45% of the grade and are long, difficult and graded harshly. Two exams make up 50% of the overall grade and are trivial MC questions that are difficult to study for. The exams do not relate to the class material at all and prof isnt helpful.
Homework was outrageously hard and counted for a large percentage of the grade. $100 textbook for a gen-ed. Very math-heavy. The lectures were boring. Tests were impossible to study for and contained mostly random questions. Material that I honestly don't need to know for life.
This is by far the hardest class I have taken at umass. He requires you to just know all the math needed without teaching it. None of the homeworks make any sense and tests and impossible to study for. Do not take this class.
I swear on my life this is by far the worst class I've ever taken. The TAs are useless, I went to many sessions and my grades were still tanked. The professor although quite funny, he just expects you to know A LOT about math for an entry level course. The tests feel almost impossible, and the homework is such a joke, they grade it so horribly.
Teaches as if its not a gen ed, and expects that you have background knowledge on astronomy. Too much work for a gen ed, and be prepared to teach yourself math you have never seen. TA's grade harshly. Avoid this class.
Every great review you see for Astro 105 ignore, do not by any means take this class. Guy is a hilarious dude don't get me wrong, his lectures are quite funny, but the class itself is awful. Far too much work for a gen-ed, very confusing work he gives very little support for, and possibly the worst TAs I've ever experienced. Avoid.
Don't take this class
Find a different class to fulfill your gen-ed. And if you need it for your major, consider switching majors. That's all.
Funny dude but the class was so hard. I took this as a gen ed, might pass. Weekly quiz online, weekly reading with mandatory comments online, and weekly homework. He puts the slides online and lectures which is great but that alone won't be helpful. No extra credit really. For exams, there's 3, he allows a piece of paper but that doesn't even help.
His test questions were extremely specific, often statistic-based questions that make it almost impossible to do well on the tests unless you have a photographic memory. Tests were a large percentage of your final grade.
I took this class as a physical science gen ed and trust me it was no worth taking. Spent more time working on homework and studying in this class then I do on classes for my major. Impossible to get 100s on quizzes and home works. As well as a $60 textbook...
Don't take this class unless your interested in Astronomy!! Very difficult impossible to get good grades unless you care about the topic. For the homework they dock points for every little thing so read carefully and answer all parts of the question.
Very difficult grader, and with all the homeworks, quizzes, and graded readings it can be a lot, however he rounds the homework grades up by 10% at the end which is helpful and the worst exam grade is worth less than the other 2. Very hard class, but probably more manageable than any other physical science gen ed
The class is very interesting, and i enjoyed it. Homework is so much more stressful than it should be and graded quite harshly, but for a physical science gened i much prefer it over regular physics or chem. The lectures are very important for both the homework and exams, and going to the ta help sessions are very helpful.
Definitely a challenging class, the homeworks are really heavy against your grade but he rounds up by 10%. Go to the TA help sessions they boost your grade. A lot of work for a gen ed wouldn't recommend if you're not interested in weather.
This class is no easy feat, but Unstuck AI can help make it more manageable. The homework is tough, but the professor rounds up grades. Attend TA sessions to boost your performance.
