Dr. Caldwell is awesome. He definitely made classes interesting. Getting a good grade is relatively easy, as long as you study the notes and go to class.
Dr. Caldwell was very difficult and big-headed. His tests were extremely difficult, and not just for me. I had a lot of friends in that class, and all of them struggled just like me. The only grades in there are tests and lab, so if you don't do good on his tests, you're pretty much doomed.
Pretty decent teacher but he reads mostly off the slides...the book is not really necessary since all the info you need is one the powerpoints you print out..easy A for anyone in honor's biology if you study
He reads off his slides. His wife actually teaches biology and I would reccomend her to you, but Guy does nothing but read off slides and give hard tests. His grades only come from your four tests, Lab, hw and attendence. Don't take if you havent taken AP Bio or if you dont know a lot about biology.
Dr. Caldwell is a great teacher. If you are some one who doesn't attend classes or does not care about grades, then this class is not for you. If you actually care, he will help you in anyway you need to be helped.
Probably my favorite professor at UA. Very nice. He is not only helpful with class material, he help you with achieving your career goals. Becaue of him, I finally found what I want to do, and I know what to do to get there. As for his class, the tests are pretty easy if you study. Go to class, study, and do assigned readings. You will do well.
Doesn't keep attendance but gives random quizzes. He doesn't ever give them two days in a row. DO THE ONLINE hw. It will really help your grade. If you are majoring in Biology, TAKE him. He is like the God of Biology here at UA. Know him and you shall know biology ;). Very approachable but doesnt give extra credit
Dr. Caldwell is a great professor. His classes are interesting and the homework is easy. He does random quizzes so make sure you come to class, but the quizzes aren't hard. The tests do require studying but are pretty fair. I'm very glad I took his honors bio class!
Dr Caldwell is great! He knows a lot about the material and is able to communicate that to his students. I learned a lot in his class. He gives random quizzes, but they are easy and are a boost to your grade! The online homeworks are easy and he is very willing to help outside of class. Take his class if you can!
He really isnt that bad of a teacher. If you study for his tests and go to class, you should be just fine!! He gives quizzes, so go to class!! but for an honors class, it really wasnt bad at all!
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Caldwell is a really fair professor, and there will be no curveballs on any of his exams. You just need to show up to class every day, and keep up on your MasteringBiology. I would recommend this class to any science major who actually wants to learn a lot about Biology.
He is a very nice, pretty laid-back professor who actually cares about his students, something rare considering he is a top researcher. He's very knowledgable about biology and is incredibly helpful in engaging freshmen and undergraduates. I learned a lot in his class. You have to show up and do the homework to do well, though.
By far the best teacher I've had. Extremely fair, funny, and super nice. Exams are based primarily on lecture, so go to class. I would recommend him to anyone interested in biology. He truly loves the material. Truly cares about students. If you're on the edge about Bio, TAKE HIM! He plays good music at the start of each class, too.
Dr. Caldwell is an excellent professor. He does a wonderful job explaining the material and you can tell that he loves what he does. As a student who wasn't sure about Biology, he helped me gain an appreciation for it. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Caldwell provided very in-depth power points
Just go to class and the review session before the exam and you'll be fine. He got sick or something like midway through the semester, so his wife taught a bunch of my class. I definitely don't like her as much, but if he is back and teaching again, then definitely take his class.
Doctor Calwdwell is very knowledgable about biology. His slides are great and contain everything you need to know. Explains everything and does not put anything on the test that wasnt covered in class. He does come across as slightly arrogant and he says um after every sentence ,though.
He's a great teacher, knows exactly what he's talking about, and is willing to explain a concept to death so you, the student, understand. I highly recommend him. It may be Honors Bio, but he's so easy to understand and he makes the subject so interesting, it doesn't even feel like an Honors course. I love his class!
Dr. Caldwell is the best professor. He is extremely smart, helpful, and makes every concept clear. It is very easy to make an A in his class if you just show up and pay attention. I would highly recommend him to any students considering honors bio. He also plays music before the classes. Great guy.
Read your book, go to class, and make an A. Some people struggle with the material, but the homework and reading schedules are very manageable. Some test questions can be tricky, but if you think critically, making a high A is indeed very doable. His enrichment sessions offer interesting lectures on departmental research. Take him!
Really great teacher but if you have a poor biology background I would not recommend it.
Decent teacher, but it became quite boring. It was a good class to get some easy honors credit.
Dr. Caldwell's class is a MUST take for Biology majors or anyone considering medical school. This was by far my favorite class this semester! His tests can be a little tricky, but I made A's on all of them and he is always willing to help. Great professor, great class!
Tests can be hard, but with proper study of the book and class attendance you can do well.
I learned a ton in this class. Caldwell was a very interesting and good professor. You have to study for tests, but almost everyone I know makes A's on all of them. Warning, study hard for the first test though, he tries to weed people out with his first test.
Dr. Caldwell was a pretty cool guy and had a very well structured class. he's a little arrogant but when you've done as much as him you kind of deserve to be. Tests are hard but he does a decent job preparing you for them. Great class.
Dr. Caldwell is both incredibly knowledgable and cares about his student's success. If you pay attention in class then you will do fine. The tests definitely require you to really know the material well, but he gives you all the resources you need to do well if you take advantage of them. I loved him as a teacher and would recommend him any day.
Caldwell is great! You have to study hard for his tests but as long as you do that you're set. He genuinely cares that you know what you're doing and he wants you to get the best biology education you can so you're prepared for the future. He had his wife come teach us Meiosis because she's a pro at it and he said she could do it better!
Caldwell is great. Very friendly, and VERY accomplished. He is also able to remember names remarkably well - he can probably learn the entire class in a couple weeks. Tests are all 50 Qs, Mult Choice. Pretty easy, but do study the material. He's an awesome guy... get to know him!
Dr. Caldwell did a great job teaching introductory bio. His tests were fair but difficult and could be aced with some studying. He took great interest in how his students were doing and was extremely approachable. If you're alright with putting a fair amount of effort into the course, I couldn't recommend taking him enough.
Dr. Caldwell is the best professor I have had so far. His lectures are extremely clear, he follows his slides when he teaches so students can keep up with him, and he does not put anything on tests that he does not cover in class. Keep up with the reading, take good notes from his powerpoints (conveniently located online), and you'll make an A.
Dr. Caldwell has a very likable personality. Honors classes are said to be smaller, which is true, but there were still 150 people in my class. Tests were incredibly difficult. For each test, I literally put in a minimum of 20 hours studying. This is no exaggeration. Often, questions on the test will be on ONE line in the text out of 50+ pages.
Dr. Caldwell is a very intelligent teacher and will help you if you ask for it. If you go to lectures and pay attention and read, you will get an A. You have to work for you're grade so if you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class. Although, you will learn a lot more with Caldwell, take Dr. Marcus if you are here for the GPA boost.
I love the way Dr. Caldwell teaches and you can email him a question at any point of the day and he replies back within the hour, if not right away. His tests are very specific and difficult because they require more than just memorizing what is in his lectures, you have to fully understand the concepts taught and apply them elsewhere in tests
Super important to go to class and the tests can be pretty tough. Be ready to get a bad grade on the first one. But he is a great teacher and wants to help in whatever way he can
Dr. Caldwell is a nice man. All his notes go up on Blackboard. He really knows what he's talking about but be prepared to work your butt off. The tests are killer. Basically the tests are half memorizing random facts in the powerpoint and half really tough questions that go way beyond the lecture to make sure you understand it. Not an easy A...
Dr. Caldwell is a fantastic and enthusiastic professor who wishes his students succeed. Tests are hard and make up 60% of material, but shouldn't be a problem if you take good notes during lecture, memorize the terms in the notes, and try to apply the material taught. Not the easiest class, but there are enough resources provided to be successful
He puts class notes on Blackboard. Very difficult tests and require lots of reading just to pass.
Very humble and empathetic. Will take time to help you through tough stuff. Takes a lot of time after class and enrichment sessions to talk with students who stay after. Not an "easy A", but if you do the reading, attend class, and study, you should do fine. A lot of reading because there's a lot of material to cover, but not much homework.
He was a good teacher, but his tests were quite challenging. If you do well as a test taker you should be fine, but otherwise, read the book, read his notes, and go to class and you will pass.
My favorite UA prof so far! Only difficult during test week due to amount of studying. His lectures are very interesting and you can tell he loves Bio. He tests straight from lectures so just re-watch all those and highlight important notes and you'll do great! Highly recommend! Minimal reading and homework! Haven't used textbook since first test(:
Dr. Caldwell is a tough professor. His lectures are somewhat interesting but overall it's not worth it. His test are super hard and when you go to his office hours he doesn't seem to help you if you didn't do amazing on the test. Take Dr. Marcus if you can because he's much easier.
His lectures: insightful. His jokes: hilarious. His music taste: superb. 10/10 would recommend Dr. Caldwell. He is one of my favorite professors this semester. Dr. C makes himself available to students and gives great advice about college during class. His tests are challenging, but his teaching ability and humor makes it worth it to take him.
Take Caldwell! I love his class, he's hilarious and really good at what he's teaching. My favorite class right now. He gives clicker quizzes but you're allowed to discuss with the class, and you can drop 5. Tests are kinda hard but you just have to actually study. 10/10 would recommend.
Dr. Caldwell is the best professor I have had at UA so far. He records all of his lectures and posts them online, which was my most important studying tool for exams. All exams are very challenging and require students to gain a thorough understanding of the material. Dr. C's course helped me get my priorities straight and learn how to really study
Dr. Caldwell is one of the most respected professors in the Bio department. He is energetic, friendly, and quirky in his lectures and does a great deal to provide students opportunities to succeed outside of class. His tests can be challenging, but if you study well you can surely get an A. Great professor, great class.
great dude. he gives you everything you need to do well on his tests during his lectures. he also makes a lot of jokes which makes lectures a lot more bearable. overall great professor (especially for an honors level class).
His test are incredibly difficult and completely conceptual. Make sure you understand every thing that comes out of that mans mouth (print notes before class). Attendance is taken through clicker quizzes. If possible take the other honors professor (his test are easier). I would not recommend if you care about your GPA (especially for med school)
Incredible class and professor. The class was very challenging and he really makes you understand the material. Dr. Caldwell's very good at relating the concepts to real-world applications and he's a very inspirational professor. Definitely not an easy a but if you're ready to work you will learn more than you ever thought possible.
Dr. Caldwell is great! Many people seem to become angry with him over their poor grades when he clearly suggests the best ways to study and pass his class. He even suggested possible tutors. The tests can be tricky but he always throws out the poorly worded questions. His lectures are recorded online and he is always ready to meet with students.
Not too difficult but some questions on tests can be a little tricky! Overall really enjoyed the class and would recommend. Also, he's pretty funny and talks about his research a lot which is pretty cool.
Dr. Caldwell is a great teacher; however, if you did not take AP Biology in high school... good luck. He does not elaborate at all on information... just reads straight from the powerpoint. Class would be pointless to attend if there weren't daily clicker quizzes. His tests are extremely hard -- you'll invest lots of time studying for this class.
Dr. Caldwell is a phenomenal professor. While his class was difficult, he gave us all the tools we needed to succeed (including using tegrity, which most professors do not), and gave us numerous tips as to how to properly study for the course. You could tell that he genuinely cared about his students , and made an effort to make the class fun.
He's an awesome teacher who really cares about you but also expects a lot from you. All lectures are recorded and posted on Tegrity. Minimal, easy homework. Tests are intense, you have to really understand the material and prepare ahead. Tests make up most of your grade and there are no drop grades. Not an easy A but definitely worth the effort
Amazing professor. His lectures tell you everything you need to know (puts ALL lectures online), he is very clear on the grading criteria, even providing us with reminders about assignments every class. His tests are all multiple choice and not hard to pass if you study the online lectures. Overall very interesting guy and cares about his students
Dr. C is probably my favorite professor so far at UA. He's funny, intelligent, caring and just a cool dude by any standard. Tests are hard, but that's ok because you'll realize that you actually learn and fully UNDERSTAND the often complex material. Rewatch his lectures and study for a few hours before each exam. They're hard, but an A is possible.
Really great professor that ensured you actually learned and understood the material. Tests are tough but fair. Some questions can be tricky and he may have a few mistakes on the test but he always fixes them. Make sure you know everything on the slides for the tests. I only read the book to better understand tougher concepts.
Great professor. Tests are mostly from the powerpoints and he takes attendance with clicker. He is very funny and did a great job of keeping students engaged. He is an honest man and was very real about grades and expectations.
Dr. Caldwell is a rare professor that is highly involved in research yet is great at teaching. He does easy clicker quizzes for participation but his tests can be tricky. Exams cover the slides, not the textbook. He also uses lecture recording software, hint: when that's paused, what he says will be on the test.
I enrolled in this class when my major was still biology. This class is very challenging, and I realized that I needed to change majors. That being said. Guy is a great person, it's just tough material. You need to watch his tegrity talks in order to be successful, and you really need to pay attention for sure.
Babbles about his research & has lots of clicker quizzes. Tests are unfair and miserable, do not demonstrate your knowledge of the material but instead his tricks. If you want to go to Med school with a good GPA, do not take him, he didn't make me a better student either, i just hate biology now & have a lower GPA. Used to have a 4.2, not anymore.
Do not take this class if you did not take AP BIO in High School. The information goes deeply into the material you learn, and some of the material on tests is just questions from Dr. Caldwell about his research that really has nothing to do with the class. I find it hard to pay attention in lecture since he seems to have no clear train of thought.
Dr. Caldwell is a researcher that just so happens to "teach" (aka reading directly off his slides). He rambles about his research even if it does not relate to the lesson. Tests are very lecture heavy, and he adds ridiculous trick questions. The book is not required, but helps if you're not an auditory learner.
At the beginning of the semester, he started off by saying, "Who's ready to make biology the b*tch?", but so far it's been the other way around. He pretty much just read off the slides that he posts ahead of time, but you still have to go to class for the pop quiz clicker questions. If you miss too many of those, you get a 0 for final quiz grade.
You may read that Guy is unfair and talks too much about research, but that comes from students who have no interest in bio & make no effort to get help. He is a super cool dude who grades fairly! Make sure that you really learn the material, though; if you try to just memorize instead of truly understanding concepts, you'll do poorly on his exams.
very clear in lectures and in what will be on the test. records every class but pauses them (usually on fridays) and gives very important info not in the notes that will be on the test. you will need to study a lot but you can do it! also not a comprehensive final
These were the hardest tests I have ever taken. I have re-listened to the recorded lectures, made . my own notes, and studied for hours for the exams and still made D's on them. Do not take this class.
Great professor overall and knows his stuff. Show up to class or it makes it difficult to pass the test as he typically pauses his lectures and gives crucial info for the test. Doesn't test from the book at all, everything is in his lectures. You'll also get a good grasp of neuroscience being in his class. Test questions are application based.
Dr. Caldwell and is fantastic professor and a wonderful person. Many of the people who rate him poorly are simply bitter about their grade. His class is not easy, but if you study you can do well. He provides so many resources and options to succeed. He even records his lectures and everything on the tests can be found in those. Take this class!
The course packs a lot of material in a very short time span and the tests are very tricky and focus on tiny details that are easy to miss. I found it very difficult to get good test grades. Don't take the class if you don't already have a solid biology foundation from high school. That being said, he seems to care a lot about his students.
Dr. Caldwell is a really great guy, but his class is very difficult. He makes his tests very tricky. His policy is "pick the best answer." He says he will throw out questions that he thinks are unfair, but usually its just one. He also talks A LOT about his research. Overall, Dr. Caldwell is an ok professor but get ready for LOTS of studying.
Dr. Caldwell is intelligent, hilarious, and I enjoyed going to class, which is good because there are clicker questions worth credit. The 1st exam was very hard, but after that, they got easier and easier. Dr. C gives every opportunity for success, as he posts his lectures, crosswords, and notes. He talks a lot about his research, which I loved.
Dr. Caldwell was by far my favorite professor this semester. His tests are tough, definitely, but once you know what to expect it gets significantly easier. He goes out of his way to apply the lecture material to real research, and is always available discuss grades or questions. Plus, he's just a fun guy to be around.
Dr. Caldwell is a good professor who cares about his students. He talks about his research because he's excited about it and it's interesting. Tests are difficult, but get easier as you get used to them. He makes jokes in lecture and gives good advice. If you go to his office hours, he is always willing and happy to help!
It is very much worth your while to go to office hours
Dr. Caldwell's class is possible, but he seems to take pride in making his tests obscenely difficult. Expect to read and listen to tegrity for hours on end if you decide to take this class. DO NOT TAKE if you have not taken AP Bio.
Good guy, he tried to get to know as many students as possible. His lectures were enjoyable, and I thought his tests were very fair. I think the grading was very fair, but don't expect anything not in the syllabus. Talks about his research a lot, but at least he's passionate.
Please dont take this class. Especially if you want to go to medical school. The tests are awful. If you want a good grade take general bio because this class will not help you. It wasnt worth it.
Your grade is 60% tests and they are hard so be prepared to study. He provides a lot of resources, so use them. He has kind of a particular style of writing questions and seems really busy with his research, so it takes a while to get used to. Overall though, he's not a bad professor, just takes getting used to and you have to go to class.
Dr. Caldwell is very passionate about Bio and his research, and genuinely wants his students to succeed. However, it does sometimes feel like he does a lot of reading straight off the powerpoint, which for me personally was not the easiest way to learn the volume of material we were tested on. His tests are very hard, studying is a must.
Personalty wise Caldwell is a decent guy. He seems cocky and strives to make his test difficult. Be prepared to study for hours a day weeks in advance of the test date. His wife is by far a better teacher and I enjoyed when she came and taught. Be prepared to dedicate plenty of time to studying and going to enrichment lessons for this course.
Tests are pretty hard ngl. Know the lectures front and back and you'll probably be fine. Super cool dude, always talks about his passion for research and jokes around in class. Smart prof, and expects his students to be the same. Just take good notes and STUDY. If you put the work in, you'll enjoy Dr. Caldwell and his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Ignore those good comments because those students already knew biology like that back of their hand, if you want a nice grade for medical school find another teacher!!
Dr. Caldwell is an amazing professor. He explains the class material in-depth and records all of his lecture. If you go through the Tegrity recordings and try to understand (not just memorize) the powerpoint slides, then the exams are quite manageable. This class isn't an easy A, so be prepared to study.
Dr. Caldwell is very passionate about what he does, and wants to see his students succeed. That being said, he won't hold your hand. You have to work for a good grade, his class is not an easy A. Tests are difficult, but not unreasonably so. If you know the material well, your grade will reflect that.
If you're expecting an easy A, this class isn't for you. I had to dedicate hours of studying to get Cs on the exams. It's kind of a weed out class, but if you are Pre-Med, it's not going to get any easier from here. Caldwell generally cares if you come to his office hours, but you need to consider what you are getting into before taking his class.
He pretty much just reads right from the power point unless he is talking passionately about his worms, which he does often. The tests are unreasonably difficult compared to the lecture material, and he tries to scare pre-med freshmen into switching majors.
Fantastic professor. I didnt do fantastic in his class but thats entirely my fault, not his. If you take good notes, study them well, and go to lecture, you can succeed in this class. Hes very knowledgeable about his topics and hes able to incorporate his own experience into the lecture appropriately. This is a hard class, but biology is hard.
Good guy, clear lectures, fair grader, understands what he's teaching. But, if you don't have a heavy background in biology and/or are willing to eat, breathe & sleep it for the entire semester, you will not do well in the class. This isn't an easy A at all, and the tests make you do more than memorize, so come prepared or take regular bio.
Don't take this class if you want an easy A. However, Dr. Caldwell does not want his students to fail (contrary to what's on here). I did poorly on the first 2 tests and went to office hours for help. He gave me some tips and I improved a lot on the next one. Come to lecture, make sure you spend lots of time studying, and ask him for help if needed
I really enjoyed this class!! I really didn't think this class was very difficult. I definitely had to study for his tests, but that's to be expected for any science class. This class was about the same difficulty as my high school ap bio class, so maybe I was just already prepared for this class. But Dr. Caldwell really is a great professor!!!
One of the hardest classes Ive taken. However, Caldwell is passionate about what he teaches and actually cares about his students and their success. Tests are difficult and tegrity videos need to be rewatched in order to prep for tests, but if you study and take good notes on his presentations youll do well, something I did not realize early on.
Without taking Dr. Caldwells class I would not be prepared for harder pre-med courses in the future. He relates all lectures back to current research and medicine. I have never studied as much/as hard as I did in this class, but again it will pay off down the road. Take the time to get to know him and go in for office hours!
I have never known an instructor with as mixed a pool of opinions as Dr. Caldwell. Guy is demanding and you will have to study to the extent that you have to know seemingly *everything* on the lecture slides. He seems to take himself a little too seriously at times. Overall, he's great for improving your work ethic and less for learning biology.
Unless you've taken AP Bio in high school and were fantastic at it, do NOT take this class. He'll say otherwise, but it's just him spewing BS like normal. He prides himself on making his tests insanely hard. You have to have every powerpoint slide memorized and then understand every single word of it and how it applies to anything to do well.
Dr. Caldwell's BSC118 class is more about work ethic than learning biology. His tests were unreasonably specific to random things from his lecture, so the best way to study is off the lecture recordings. I got a 5 on AP Bio in high school but still had to work extremely hard for an A in this class. Overall, a knowledgeable professor but difficult.
Dr. Caldwell is well-esteemed and he holds his students to a high standard, but only because he thinks so highly of them! This course comprised of a few presentations and a paper with class participation. The info was interesting and because the class is small it was really engaging. He is a great communicator and gives good feedback. I recommend!
Really personable/wants his students to succeed, however, basically told us that if we failed the first test we need to find another career which was really discouraging. I ended up dropping the class because it made me feel like there was no hope. Tests are hard, take good notes and go to office hours to succeed. Clicker quizzes for attendance.
Guy was exceptional as instructor of Disease Models & Mechanisms. It was a very cool class where we read articles from the literature each week. Very presentation heavy. Guy gives incredibly detailed and helpful feedback after each presentation. One paper. Guy was generous enough to reward the best paper by having it published online.
Guy was a great lecturer and really cared about seeing his students succeed. His tests were difficult and required a lot of studying outside of class, but they were manageable, I did fine. Clicker quizzes for attendance, but you're allowed to collaborate on them. Solid choice for a BSC professor and I would definitely take a class with him again.
Hes funny and a nice guy. BUT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS U R FREAKISHLY SMART IN BIO OR HAVE A LIGHT CLASS SCHEDULE. Seriously his tests are so hard and is not easy to reach with classes being online. He is also extremely discouraging if u r premed. Basically made our whole class cry after the first test Bc none of us are smart enough.
Dr. Caldwell is very funny, & I genuinely enjoyed most of his lectures, BUT his class is VERY test heavy. His tests are lecture based & VERY specific. You have to completely understand everything to do well on his test, & you wouldn't even be able to cheat on them if you wanted to. I did still enjoy his class though & I still ended up with a B+.
Professor Caldwell is a good teacher however, he made intro Bio WAY harder than it should've been. I took AP Bio in high school and without the previous knowledge I had of Bio from that I would've gotten a B. His tests are incredibly hard and you have to be willing to study upwards of 15 hours for them if you want to even have a chance at an A.
Guy is THE best. He will make you work for the grade, but only because he wants to prepare you for medical school. Is available all the time if you have extra questions and really encourages us to reach out to him. Definitely study for exams, but they are based 100% from lectures and 0% from book. He's hilarious too. HIGHLY recommend. My king.
He gets a bad wrap because his tests are very hard. If you make yourself known to him and put in the extra effort it will go a long way. Always meet with him to look over old exams! You'll need to consistently study hardcore for this class, but he really does care about his students and wants you to succeed. The tests are heavily based on lectures.
Dr. Caldwell is an amazing lecturer, is very passionate, and very interesting. That being said, this class is VERY hard. If you are looking to get an A, I would recommend not taking the honors section of this class. I have never studied nearly this much in my life for a class. Go to class, take good notes, study, and you'll at least pass.
I took this course when it was 100% online. Very obviously knowledgeable about his subject. If I had not attended lectures, I would have done very poorly. I Googled a lot of answers for the homework. Tests/homework were rough. I enjoyed his lecture style. He got political on occasion. It's biology, why are you talking about guns? Changed my major.
Dr. Caldwell is an excellent professor who is passionate about what he teaches, but be prepared for exams that are much more complex than the material would warrant.
Dr. Caldwell is a great professor and really made the lectures enjoyable to attend! However, I can agree with most others that his tests are the most difficult part of the class and really requires a lot of effort and time put towards studying. If you dont study and understand the material, its going to be a hard time for you.
This class is NOT an easy A and Dr. Caldwell was very discouraging. I spent upwards of 20 hours a week studying. I have now found the course to be helpful for teaching study skills and work ethic. Go to office hours and make yourself known to him and it will pay off. You have to memorize every slide/bullet point on his presentations for exams.
Dr. Caldwell is well-meaning and passionate but his tests are brutal. They are multiple choice but the answer choices were often intentionally ambiguous and tricky. Know the lectures by heart and you'll do fine, but be prepared to do nothing but study the days before the test.
It's a hard class, but it needs to be. Dr. Caldwell is a really interesting guy but he goes a little too fast sometimes. If you aren't a fast writer/typer then be prepared to take lecture notes outside of class. Getting an A isn't too difficult, especially if you took AP Bio in HS (I did not).
Dr. C is an amazing guy, and great professor, but his class is very difficult. Tests are based on the lectures, and you need a deep understanding of the content to do well on them. Even though this is a difficult class, it teaches you so much about biology and yourself. If you're serious about going to Med School, I highly recommend taking Dr. C!!
Dr. C's class was 100% a challenge, and his tests were hard, but he was always available for help and offered a chance to go over tests after. Tests came straight from lectures, and the lectures were recorded. Sometimes he'd stop the recording and give test hints, so try to go to class! And don't be scared to reach out, he wants to help!
Dr. Caldwell is amazing! He records lectures, so attendance isn't mandatory. However, he does give hints as to what will be on the exam that he does not share on the recordings (so attendance is encouraged). The tests are hard, so be familiar with the lectures/slides.
He is awesome. I loved how he taught this class, but the tests were unbelievably difficult. Anything on the PowerPoints, and ANYTHING he says in class is fair game for the test. So make sure you go to class and pay attention.
Dr. C is one of the best professors I've had and I love his teaching style. However, this class is extremely difficult and his tests are not easy, so be ready to study a ton. His class teaches you how to study and prepares you for upper level courses. He also offers generous extra credit. Go to class, he gives test hints.
Dr. Caldwell is THE BEST. I loved his teaching style, and I feel that I am well prepared for upper level courses. The tests are very difficult. My biggest piece of advice would be to rewatch the lectures. He gave a generous amount of extra credit this year. The amount of content you learn in this course compared to regular biology is outstanding.
Dr. C is a VERY caring and intelligent individual. Exams are difficult, based entirely on lectures, and are specific to any examples brought up. Studying can be very time consuming, but he's more than happy to help those who go to office hours. He grades fairly with significant extra credit opportunities. Hard class but extremely beneficial.
The absolute best professor. He is highly esteemed and could be teaching any higher level biology class if he wanted to. Instead he chose to focus on Honors General Biology 1. Dr. Caldwell truly cares for his students and wants them to succeed, but he won't make it easy on you. Perfect class to develop perseverance as a pre-med.
This was a great class! Dr. Caldwell's lectures were very insightful, and he made sure to mention new information that was related to whatever we were learning. However, tests can be VERY difficult, but they help with learning how to apply the material.
Very difficult class but is also very doable. You have to rewatch lectures to get every nitpicky detail because ANYTHING mentioned in lecture is fair game come exam time. Class however is very informative for those with a future in biology but wouldn't recommend him if that isn't you. Relates topic taught to real physiological research in medicine.
Caldwell is an amazing professor if this is your first Bio class at UA. Tests are hard but doable if you study and rewatch lectures, He gives back a lot of points and will sometimes curve. Going to office hours before tests is super beneficial. Super nice guy and really passionate, he is easy to communicate with and will help you succeed.
Attendance is not mandatory but test questions and extra credit opportunities are given during in-person class (he pauses recordings). Tests are nearly impossible without rewatching lectures multiple times. Quizzes are only 4 questions but are online so you can use notes. The honors class is NOT equivalent to other bio classes, it's much harder!
Guy is such an amazing professor! I loved his class and he made it easy to get involved in class and on campus! He definitely appreciates involved students and it helps your grade to be paying attention, but it's really obvious that he teaches because he loves teaching, which can be hard to find in science professors sometimes!
Very difficult tests and only 4 per semester. Spends a lot of time talking about unrelated topics in class and rushed through important material. Difficult class if you have not taken AP Bio. No curve on tests because a few students get high grades.
I was hesitant since RMP had mixed reviews but figured if I studied it would end up ok. Did horribly on the first exam after rewatching the lectures weekly and studying for a week straight. The second one I somehow did worse and studied even more. I met with him about both exams and he said that my tests showed signs of attention deficit.
Professor Caldwell's class is challenging but rewarding. Lectures are packed with information, so rewatching them is key. Using Unstuck AI alongside the course materials really helped me prepare. This honors bio class is tough but worth it.
A very nice guy that genuinely cares about students. With that being said, his tests are extremely difficult and unnecessarily intricate. He knit picks with details and majority of questions are based on application and are not easily tied to what was learned in class. You need to spend hours on this class every week to do well.
He's a caring professor, readily available outside of class. However, exams are needlessly tough. No matter how much you study there will be exam questions you can't answer (19+ hrs studying and I still missed 5 questions). Fortunately, he rounds up grades to boost your final score. You get plenty of dropped quizzes and homework assignments, too.
Great professor. You can tell that he is passionate about Biology, and it helps you learn. He records all the lectures, and rewatching them once is really all I did to study (make sure you remember every detail). I did take AP bio in high school which helped a bit, but many topics go into further detail and use applications.
Overall, Guy Caldwell was a great professor. He posted his lectures to blackboard and was accessible outside of class. His tests are very hard and be prepared to watch every lecture at least once more. He often gives some hints towards what's on the exam during review sessions. Exams are 50 multiple choice in 60 minutes, very application based.
While Caldwell is very caring and knowledgeable, don't believe any advisor that tells you this class won't be harder than non-honors bio. Tests are difficult, and so application-focused (something not emphasized enough in homework or class unless it relates to Caldwell's research) doing well is unlikely unless you're already a good test taker.
Dr Caldwell is a nice guy and passionate about biology, but his tests are unnecessarily difficult. I am a naturally good test taker, but I still found myself spending 15-20 hours weekly studying to do well. His lectures are interesting, but very detail oriented. Take the regular version if you cannot dedicate lots of free time to this class.
While Professor Caldwell seems to be a super genuine person and a great guy, this class is unnecessarily hard. The tests are worded extremely poorly, and he asks questions that are far beyond what we learned in class. If you are considering this course, please please please just opt to take non-honors bio, I promise you will perform better.
Dr. Caldwell's honors bio class definitely teaches you how to study and prepares you for future STEM classes. Be prepared to study a lot and work hard for your grade as tests are incredibly lecture heavy and dependent. He makes sure to apply the material to real world scenarios and is genuinely willing to help students understand the material.
Dr. Caldwell is a knowledge and challenging professor. His tests are application based with confusing wording. Rewatch is lectures and if he talks for a while about one particular concept, know it! This class prepares you for future STEM courses and teaches you how to study. Overall, he is a great guy, and I enjoyed taking his class.
Difficult, but I'm glad I took this class. He does go off on tangents occasionally, but there's often nuggets in there that'll show up on the exams, so they're worth paying some attention to. Study hard and you'll pass with flying colors, especially with the extra credit. Homework, quizzes and exams were all multiple choice, IIRC.
I didn't feel strongly about Dr. Caldwell one way or the other. His class was very content-heavy, which meant preparing for exams was pretty difficult. He did provide everything needed to do well on his exams; the textbook was more of a supplement. Records lectures which was helpful for studying. WATCH THEM! Chill guy but not my favorite professor.
i learned nothing in this course. all he talked about was his worms. after the whole class failed the first exam, he gave us a 30+ min lecture about how we would never make it to medical school, so we should just drop out now. very demeaning and discouraging. save yourself the misery and take bsc114/115 instead. had to drop the class, it was so bad
Dr. Caldwell is one of UA's most respected professors. He's incredibly knowledgeable and leads groundbreaking neurodegeneration research, yet teaches in a clear, engaging way. He understands most of us are pre-med and wants us to be prepared. Go to office hours; he's supportive and great to talk with about anything college.
Awful. I beg for your sake and sanity to not take this class, better yet, don't take any honors classes. The advisors say it is easier, but it's harder and even the professor admits it. He makes tests hard on purpose and doesn't give study material. Test questions are using concepts or ideas that aren't talked about and is expected to just know.
I was an ap student in high school and would rather take an ap exam than his tests. He makes them way harder than they need to be by making them so wordy you don't know what he is asking for. It does not matter if you know the content because the questions are backwards and he also gives 0 study material. The only benefit is Ms. McLean as your lab.
Dr. Caldwell is one of my favorite professors on campus. Despite what people may say about beating down premeds, his conceptual teaching style made me feel as if I could tackle any future stem courses necessary to go to med school. The class is very information dense, but rewatching lectures and attending his office hours will get you a good grade.
Loved him, great teacher and truly learned so much but his tests were so hard for no reason. There is no reason that my friend is in regular bio making note cards for his tests and consistently getting A while I'm studying 4+ hours a day and making C on tests. Not sure if it is worth taking him because it will tank your GPA.
