he has a french accent, but he makes a joke out of it sometimes. a very good teacher, will always answer your questions via in-class or email. the exams are hard! but they're gonna be hard for any psych class, it doesnt matter who the teacher is. just study everything he tells you to.

This class was pretty interesting over all. He has a bit of an accent, but it's not really hard to understand. Through the course, he gives out two to four question quizzes, which you must study for. They are multiple choice 95% of the time. The tests are tough, but if you read the text and know the definitions, it's not impossible to make an A.
Mr. Edlis is a good teacher. He lets you know what he expects from the get-go. The tests are hard and you do have to study, but an A is definitely possible. Beware there is absolutely no extra credit in this class. The points he outlines in the syllabus are the only points you will get.
He is a very nice person. He is extremely helpful. His accent was very confusing (he's from Israel). Going to class is not mandatory, in fact, I only went to class for tests and quizzes and my grades went up significantly. Just read the book and you can make an A!
Class was boring, but he's from Israel so that was cool. He makes you know almost everything from the book and doesn't always go over all of the material in class. He offers to help out. I was really close to getting an A before the final and he said he would give me the A if I got close. In the end, I was 2 points away from an A...I got a B+. Hmm.
DO NOT GET!!!! He thinks that he is the only one that can ever be right. His quizes seem to be impossible at first but after over half the class failed them he decided to make them a little better. He makes you feel so tiny and dumb. When you e-mail him do not expect a nice cheery response. Over all a horrible teacher.
His class is not THAT hard but his test are alittle bit difficult just because there is sooo much information you have to learn. He is an O.K teacher but not the best psy teacher so I would look for a different one if possible. Go to class on Wed for the quizes bc those can catch up on you.
Great teacher, not hard.
has an accent but VERY clear. class isnt really needed. the tests can be tricky but its all multiple choice
I absolutely hated this class! I can't understand him because he's from Israel. He doesn't care about your grade. He talks and talks about nothing I wouldn't recommend going to lecture - you won't learn anything. The best thing to do is teach yourself by the book.
On the class where he talks about Introverts and Extroverts, he admitted that he would make a great psychologist, but not a very good teacher. He puts ALOT of information on the slides, so my advice is read over those and look at the book. At the end, I was 2 points away from a B, and emailed him and told him my situation, and I got the B.
Easy A, just be sure to buy the book and the read the book. class is pointless, he reads the slides and then puts them on blackboard. just look over slides and go to class for quizzes. study book before tests and you'll get an A or B+ easily. his tests are fair and he doesn't try to trick you on the quizzes, they are directly from the slides
He is really passionate about what he teaches, however he is quite rude when you ask for help. He expects you to know everything he doesn't teach in lecture to. He knows what he's talking about but what he says has little influence on the only 2 exams he gives. there are also 3 papers involved and a few quizzes that are hard and only 2 points
He is an awful teacher. His accent is VERY thick, if you sit more than 5ft away from him it sounds like he is speaking jibberish. My advice. STAY AWAY!
He's a great teacher! He knows his stuff very well and he does a great job with presenting the material. He grades difficultly and expects the best out of his students. I got a C because I started slacking off towards the end and stopped going to class. I severely recommend going to class every time! Its easy if you do that!
Extremely interesting course, I wish I could take it again! Attendance not mandatory. I missed a ton of classes and got an A. Workload seems intimidating at first, but I did great by just studying the book.
He is an absolutely amazing teacher! I have learned more from his class than I have in most of my other college classes. You should definately go to class, it will help you on the test! (plus there are pop quizzes) If you work extra hard to understand the material and CLEARLY decipher between disorders you will do great. CAREFULLY read test ?'s
If you really want to lean about psychology, this teacher is truly passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Genuinely cares about the material. CLass is hard, you may need to study a lot, and i didnt miss a class because there are pop quizzes, i recommend this class
Such a deep and thorough understanding of the human mind, behavior, and personality. You learn so much about yourself and others and gain such fantastic insight without a huge workload. His expectations are average and nothing super difficult about his class. His exams are straight from lecture and readings.
If you really want to learn about Theories of Personality then he is an excellent professor. Just be sure to attend every class, read the book, and keep up with the articles. He doesn't put his slides online He reads off the slides in class and goes through them very fast so I suggest a recorder because he doesn't like to go back to previous slides
DO NOT TAKE. For one you cant understand him due to his accent. He puts no slides online, goes so FAST, hates to go back, and gives NO STUDY GUIDE for the exam. And you have to write a 8-10 pg paper. You dont enjoy it bc you are frantically taking notes. Take SOMETHING ELSE!!!
So to put it bluntly, he does not help you with exams at all, and it would be better if there were more, small exams that had less required content to study. It's also a 1 day a week class, which is problematic when it comes to studying. There is also a paper, but the paper isn't that big of an issue and the reaction papers take an hour tops.
If you simply look at the material, this class is interesting. But he is a hard to understand. The notes are heavy since the class is once a week and he doesn't put slides online. There are no study guides for the tests either. The 10page paper wasn't so bad, but only once I figured out what he was looking for. Point blank, take another professor.
I thought the class was excellent, but you do have to think and work for your grade. This is a Jr/Sr/Grad level class so there is a lot of reading and there are no study guides. If you want to really learn and understand the material in depth, this is a great class. Also, he pulls in material from his clinical practice, making it more interesting.
Dr. Edlis is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate professors I have ever had. I would encourage everyone to take his class. Every bit is interesting! You won't be sorry!
His english is clear. Make a few study buddies first day of class. Helps a lot with note taking when you share. Tests are multiple choice. Please share in the class. Makes it more enjoyable and is great experience for counseling. You don't have to agree with his views to like the class. You learn a lot here! Highly recommended.
Still in class. First exam only covered about a third of what was in text, notes, and lecture. The other material was from what you would have had to have in a previous psyc class. Good news is you get to drop the lowest exam grade. Hoping this was the one. Overall, I do not recommend this professor.
His English is clear, but he's quiet, so sit close. I really enjoyed his course. Because he's a psychologist, he drew a lot of case studies into the course to make it more interesting. Also, he gave me an extension on the paper without penalty. I'd try to take a picture of his slides, though, because he goes fast and doesn't post them online.
I am in this class right now, as well as his PSYCH 470 section. Abnormal is much easier than his Theories of Personality class. However, there are no study guides. You must read the textbook because concepts from the textbook will be on the test. Pretty much, know everything! I would highly recommend another professor. Run from this one!
Guy is extremely intelligent and very passionate about psychology. He's not "obsessed with Freud" - he's a psychotherapist and wants to provide his students with an in-depth look at the theory he specializes in. It's difficult to keep up with the readings, but if you are open-minded and willing to work hard you will enjoy and succeed in his class.
All the people complaining about him on here must not have realized 470 is a seniorgrad class, and he treats you like you're competent enough to handle the heavy work load. I found this one of the best psych classes I took at UT and learned a lot. He's a real therapist and his vignettes from his practice were really neat.
He only has 3 grades (2 tests and a paper) DONT TAKE HIM
This class was pretty difficult. There are only three grades, 2 tests and a paper. The paper is 10 pages, but our TA graded them pretty easily though. Lectures are long and boring, & Guy is very quiet so sit close. Tests are difficult because with so many different disorders it's easy to confuse them. Don't take looking for an easy A.
This is not an easy course, he makes you work for your grade but his class is worth the struggle. I learned a lot about abnormal psych from his lectures. He expects you to read the book and does not cover nearly everything he says he will in the syllabus. Be prepared to read the text and familiarize yourself with the topics he didn't teach.
Guy is great, is honest and candid doesn't sugar coat anything about the field. He provides a theoretical view point that most other profs in the department don't. Yes his class is tough, but it is an upper div. It is definitely passable if you pay attention and go to class. I learned so much.
Guy is very knowledgable on the subject; If you love to learn, you will find his lectures interesting. If you miss class, the power points he provides are detailed enough to pick up on what you missed; the book also helped for further clarity. There are only two tests plus an optional final and a 8-10 page paper over any disorder-was not too hard.
Guy really knows his stuff, he is a clinical psychologist so he practices as well as teaches. I took abnormal psych with him and he would give us real examples of some of his patients. Very helpful in understanding the material. I really enjoyed the class.
He is an inspirational instructor for anyone seriously pursuing psychology. He uses real examples from his clinical practice. He actually thinks in pure psychology. As far as grades, you will have to work for it. You need to read the text book and online readings. You need to pay attention in class. But, everything you learn will be useful later.
He is so passionate about what he does that it draws you in. You won't even want to touch your phone during lectures. He does not take attendance but he will respect those who attend more than those who don't. Extremely helpful if you ask questions and he's a lovely jewish man with long hair. 10/10 would take again a million times.
Overall amazing class. He is very passionate about what he does and it transfers into how he teaches. Your entire grade is two tests and a paper, so make sure you study hard and don't procrastinate on the paper. He doesn't give homework and you he doesn't take attendance, but you should go to class. By far my favorite class I took this semester.
Best professor I've ever had, very valuable experience that opened my eyes to so many things. If you aren't ready to challenge yourself you will probably fail miserably because he doesn't appreciate ignorance. Try to participate and engage, he may be a little intimidating with all the big words but just get a dictionary and you'll be fine.
Amazing, inspirational professor. The best I have ever had. Makes getting to an 8am easy. My life has been forever changed.
He's a great professor, but this class is hard. You have to teach yourself 99% of the material, even if you attend lecture. Three exams and one huge paper. Attendance isn't mandatory. Read the book, and study in groups for exams. They're hard. Don't let him intimidate you. He's actually really nice and fun to listen to.
He's a great guy and the content is interesting. His lectures make you take a deep look at everything and makes it easy to want to go. However I will say he's kind of a tough grader and the tests are pretty difficult, even if you study days in advance. There's also a 10 page paper. It's not impossible but expect to put in a lot of effort.
I really enjoyed Guy's abnormal psych class. He's a very interesting person, and his knowledge of psychology is amazing. Mental illness is a complex subject so it's really the content and not the grading that makes the class hard. If you study as you go, it will be easy to pass tests. It doesn't hurt that he's cute, makes it easier to attend class.
Just an alright teacher. His tests were hard, but you can earn points other places in his class. Not the worst, but I wouldn't take him again.
Very interesting guy and teacher - I took abnormal psych & learned a lot. I never went to class after the 1st test and I still got an A in the class, but I had to study really hard for tests. Attendance not required but is beneficial. Only 4 exams for grades, but the last (cumulative) one is optional if you're satisfied with grade after the 3rd.
His lectures are wonderful. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should go because he really gets into the topics. He's sensitive to people who have psychological issues and you can tell he really cares. Plus he's hot.
Edlis seems very intimidating at first, but once you get to know him he's super nice and very down to earth. His class is all lecture and almost all of his test questions come for the lecture slides, so the book isn't need much. There is no homework just exams. He is very passionate about the subject which made the class fun. Loved loved his class.
You have 3 exams and one final cumulative exam. There are no assignments to help cushion your grade, so pretty much if you don't do great on all of the exams you won't get an A in the class. The way his class is set up makes it nearly impossible to make an A. Very interesting guy, but very abstract as well. Wouldn't take him again unless i had to.
Very great professor and really knows his stuff. The class was interesting, but for the tests you need to study mainly the lecture slides or you won't do well. I never used the book and got a B in the class. There are 3 exams and 1 cumulative optional final exam, no other grades so your grade depends upon your exams. Also, class is not mandatory.
Guy is an amazing lecturer. He is passionate about his career and is helpful in every way. He is very thought provoking and pushes his students to think beyond the textbook (and the DSM). If you have any questions about anything psych related he is an awesome resource.
Dr. Edlis was awesome. You can learn the information from lecture through his slides, reading isn't required but makes everything a bit more understandable. You can skip lecture, but he is so passionate about what he talks about so it makes lecture very interesting. Take him if you actually care about psychology and DO NOT COME TO CLASS LATE!
I am a psych major and I feel like Dr. Guy is the only professor I have had yet that had truly taught me psychology. Has lectures are really interesting and he gives you great real life examples. I would suggest that as long as you go to lecture and pay attention and read over the chapters he assigns you will make a good grade.
He is an amazing lecturer, but a horrible teacher. I took very diligent notes and always showed up for class and read the reading and could never seem to make higher than a C on all his exams. Does not explain things well and gives no work besides exams to help you learn or boost your grade. I would not take him again.
I dont understand the poor ratings - sure he's a little nutty about being on time to class, but he LOVES what he teaches. He is so passionate and engages you in the material. However, DO NOT pay for the book. Theres long chapters assigned and only 1-2 questions over reading per test. If you care about psych and want an easy A TAKE THIS CLASS.
He really cares about the topic but his class is really tough even if you take notes and show up to each class, He only has exams so if you're a bad test taker you're screwed.
ATTEND CLASS. He does not post all of the notes on Canvas, & the notes are essential to doing well on the exams, which are the only grades you get. Hard to stay focused in lecture because he is SO long-winded & it can get VERY boring at times. However, if you take good notes & study them, AND read the assigned txtbook chapters, you can do well
Dr. Edlis is the very best. He is so far my most favorite professor, he goes in depth beyond just what you read in a textbook and definitions. He truly, truly cares about the subject and he is so understanding to mental illnesses and completely against stigma around it.
His lectures are actually interesting and make you want to come to class, even though he doesn't take attendance. You have to take notes, he doesn't post his full PowerPoints online. If you read the chapters in the book and take good notes you'll get an A.
Dr. Edlis is the type of professor that inspires you to learn. Very inspirational and very smart. Don't show up late to his class, he will kick you out. However, I genuinely looked forward to this class and never skipped, even though attendance was not mandatory.
Dr. Edlis's class was so interesting! He interacts with the students and the lecture almost becomes a discussion. He is very blunt and passionate about how he teaches too. I would literally look forward to go to his class and I never say that!! His tests are super straight-forward and has no trick questions. just DONT SHOW UP LATE TO CLASS:)
I thoroughly enjoyed going to this class. He gives amazing lectures, however, his tests are brutal. People that went to class every day even struggle, so do not skip class. There are only 3 tests and a final that replaces the worst test grade. He is very passionate and interesting, but I felt like the tests were not worth having him as a teacher.
Hes a man of deeper thought which will make you analyze your life and trauma. His lectures are enticing and made me look forward to coming to class. He post multiple reading per class. Dont get the book, his stuff is PowerPoint based. His test...I personally never felt prepared for them and I take notes, attend, participate, and read the book.
Dr. Edlis is the best professor I have ever had in all my years of college. He is so passionate about psychology and takes it very seriously. I find his lectures making me want to learn more and inspired. He has a big heart and really cares about his students. I have taken all the classes he offers and wish I could take more. Highly recommend.
This class has been the best class I've taken so far at UTK. Yes, it is lecture heavy, but he makes it interesting and is always open to answer questions. I was very sick for 3 weeks and couldn't go to class but still made an A on the test. He is very passionate about what he teaches and is an actual therapist so he is very knowledgeable
Dr. Guy is by far the best Psychology professor at UT. I have taken him twice. He is very intense, but well respected. At first his class will appear to be difficult, but as the semester develops it will be more understanding. Lecture heavy, but the lectures are very interesting! Do NOT be late. Not much homework outside of class.
Dr. Edlis is one of the best proffs I've had so far. He is very talented and engaging. Getting an A in this class is possible as long as you go to class, read the textbook, and really try to understand the material. He is also very helpful during his office hours.
I think this was one of the worst professors I have ever had. He gave no extra credit and did not curve the tests. Many people failed his tests and the only other grades were two papers worth 15 points. None of his tests had anything to do with the textbook and he was so specific on the test. Have to have his brain to do good on the tests.
Worth taking to understand personality, such as narcissistic. He's from Israel & a diff. background gives new perspective. Class isn't hard if you participate. Took me a while to open up but once I did, the material was easier to grasp. Ask questions! And If you're late - apologize, wait outside and explain. He is kind & will be empathetic.
Graded by exams, 1 of which you can drop, and 2 papers. Doesnt give out + ( B+, C+). If you want to learn how a psychotherapist works, take him! But if your too concerned about your GPA so you can get into Med or PA school, take someone else. He makes you WORK FOR IT! Someone commented on his cultural background, WHO CARES! Lots to learn from him!
Amazing lectures and one of my favorite professors at the university. He is passionate and knows his sh*t and expects you to know yours and keep it together. Cares so much about students and had a time each week where he would be in Hodges if you wanted to talk. Even did this during the pandemic in zoom meeting and offered resources for help.
If you don't care for Freud's teachings or psychoanalysis, this is NOT the class for you. He will spend nearly the entire semester talking about Freud's teachings. His tests are hard and difficult to prepare for, because he doesn't believe in study guides. If you're late, don't come because he will kick you out, and it will be embarrassing.
So, yeah his tests are hard and you will need to study for them, but you won't find a professor that is more passionate and dedicated to this field than Edlis. People are salty because they thought it'd be an easy psych class with minimal effort put in.
Dr. Edlis is very knowledgeable in his field. He does not put up with any funny business because Abnormal Psychology is not something to be taken lightly. His tests are harder than other professors but as long as you study your notes from his powerpoints, you should do well. Reaction papers are graded by the TA. Also some of his quotes are AMAZING!
I would never recommend taking. It could have been good in person but was not switched to online in a good format. Always goes 15-30 minutes over class time and posts extra lectures (probably around 2 being an hour each) right before the exam because we are behind. Few things graded over. He makes some questionable comments that should not be said.
Edlis nearly ruined my love for Psychology. His methods are strictly outdated, Fred-praising psychoanalysis & his students receive little to no instruction in other approaches to clinical psych. His comments are questionable at times and the figures and articles he teaches from are all outdated. Wish I could go back in time & pick a different prof
Edlis is smart and I have no doubt you will learn something if you take his course. However, as other has said, he makes questionable comments and gives little to no help for his assignments. Everything is a riddle and you won't get much from lectures unless you are Edlis himself. I missed a single assignment and had to drop the course or fail.
B is the new A in this class. My class averaged a Low C/High D every exam. His grade scale has always been A, B, C, D, F (no + or -). He doesnt curve & will only "give back" two points but thats w/the ENTIRE class emailing him. His exams are hard. Only graded on exams & reaction papers. if you care about your GPA/grad school, don't take this class!
Dr. Edlis teaching and the class material, in my opinion, will benefit anyone seriously interested in continuing down path of clinical psych, counseling, or social work. I did find exams challenging, as they can be in upper-level classes, but still, feel better prepared for grad school from the experience. Would 100% take his class again!
Dr. Edlis is a clinical psychologist who cares DEEPLY about what he teaches. I learned a lot from his class. However, he teaches from the perspective of a psychoanalysist and doesn't leave much room for other perspectives. I found it inappropriate that he made comments in regard to his lack of belief in God, and seemed to scoff at those who do.
edlis is smart, but i felt this semester that he didn't care. (hopefully better in person) but not a good online class, went to talk to him to ask what i could do better and he made everything my fault for not understanding and gave me nothing. i have never felt worse listening to lectures and hearing some of the things that he says. dont take!!
Guy Edlis is an extremely smart man but uses his knowledge against himself. He makes students feel inferior and dumb when they ask questions and often flaunts on how he is a Real psychologist unlike the other professors at UTK. His tests have no consistency other than extremely difficult, and he assigns around 4-6 long articles before each class.
I took him for 330 & did far better than in 470. Few times I went to office hrs, felt like he was condescending-got nothing out of it besides worsened self esteem. Yes he is big into the psychoanalytical side of psych but he goes on & on how there are a few left so why be do difficult? This course was required for grad school but take some 1 else.
Took this class online in the fall of 2020. It consisted entirely of rambling lectures that ran over the allotted class time. The final grade was based on only five assignments for the entire semester, and he never gave any sort of study guide for the exams. Assigned a lot of readings that were never discussed in class or on the exams.
Dr. Edlis is deeply committed to both you and the class materials, always profound and provocative. He provides wealth of reading so you, not just as a student but also as a growing person, can develop your own opinions. Yes, his (recorded) class sometimes goes over time, but its bc he welcomes discussions, taking care to not gloss over them.
You won't like this class if you don't want to dig deep with psychology and only want to understand surface level psychology, and he will tell you this. If you really want to learn from someone who knows how humans suffer and how deeply intricate emotional trauma is, both in etiology and treatment, then Edlis is your guy, otherwise there are others
He's clearly passionate about his work and is intelligent. However, his exams don't match up with his lecture material. Does not respond to emails. Lectures are interesting, but are mostly discussion rather than going over actual necessary material that will be on the tests. Great guy, not my favorite professor. Graded on 2 exams & 2 papers.
Best for those who are invested in the subject just as he is; otherwise, you will get bored & be unable to do well on the tests and papers. Worried about GPA? reconsider. He provokes his students to ask questions; his class will broaden your mind. Guy is there when you want to have a conversation because cares deeply for his students.
Ok first thing he is a great person to talk to for a panel or maybe a seminar but having your whole grade decided on by only 2 papers with in clear instructions and 2 exams and isnt really great for people who are full time students, but. I will say I did enjoy his class his lectures are interesting wish I had more homework tho and less reading
Dr. Edlis is one of the greatest professors Ive ever had. He motivated me to switch my major. He is so passionate about what he does and cares about his students so much. His classes are definitely on the trickier side; simply because he expects something of you. If you are looking for a class to cruise through youre in the wrong place.
Dr. Edlis is without a doubt an incredibly smart dude. Im pretty sure he mentioned he finished up an internship at Harvard med or something so hes very well versed at this kind of material. However there was some political and religious talk during the class that he was not very well versed at but seemed to think he was. Smart guy tho.
if you are not a good test taker then GOOD LUCK. The class has 2 papers worth 15 points a piece and 3 test that are 40 a piece. The whole class is out of 150 points. If you read all the chapters and take good lecture notes there a good chance you will still fail the test.
Anything that is learned in the lectures is not on the exams. Very few grades.
very limited amount of grades in the class, frustrating to take as an elective. Have friends with other professors that really enjoy the class and have good grades, this will not happen with Dr. Edlis.
He obviously wants you to learn but does not want you to pass. 5 assignments for the whole year 3 tests which you can only pass if you have his brain and 2 reaction papers that have no direction what so ever you just have to know what he wants to hear. 5+ readings every day. Hes a smart guy but if you have anymore than just his class dont take him
DO NOT TAKE!! he is clearly very passionate about psychology and i respect that, but he is NOT passionate about teaching what so ever. there are a total of 5 grades for the whole semester. which sounds nice, but dont let it fool you. Making a 35/40 on an exam drops your grade. Nearly impossible to pass his class unless you think exactly like him.
If you came here for advice, avoid this class at all costs. Take another professor. Dr. Guy is a cool guy but his class is not cool and made me cry many times. I tried very hard to make a C.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Dr. Edlis. His lectures were amazing, and I learned so much from him. My main problem with the class was that our entire grade rested on five assignments. The TA is an incredibly tough grader when it comes to the papers, and it is close to impossible to pass the exams unless you have Dr. Edlis' brain.
I had to drop the class. He only took three grades the whole semester which were three exams. He basically gave you a bunch of readings and slides and then none of it was on the exams. As someone who is a terrible test taker, I knew it was not it. The test questions are super hard and nothing we really learned either, you teach yourself.
Dr. Edlis is clearly passionate and a good lecturer, but this course is ridiculously difficult for a 300s level course. Typically, 10 heavy articles a week + textbook chapter(s) + lectures with slides at 14-point font, single spaced, totally filled. Graded off 140 points total w/ 4 exams and optional final, no extra credit, no other assignments.
Dr. Edlis provides an interesting perspective because he is a psychotherapist, but his tests were very hard and had little to do with his lectures. He's very introspective and tells a lot of interesting stories, but his lectures were hard to follow and he barely even talks about the tests (which are the only grades in the class). He's also quiet.
Love Prof Edlis, but his course is EXTREMELY exam-based, and you have to think like him in order to do good on the exams. The lectures were super interesting; honestly, I have never been more fascinated by his stories. I don't think I have learned more from a PSYC professor in my life. You definitely have to put the work in to pass this class
Probably one of the worst professors I've had. His slides are vague and don't bother asking him a question about the material, you will not get a clear explanation in the slightest. Hard to reach outside of class. Tests are on a plethora of materials that he does not cover in class.
I had to retake this course because his approach is very much based on his own opinions, and not objective material. The onky grades were 3 exams, which caused most students in this class to fail. The test material was not based on lecture.
I could see why people say he was strict or hard to follow. For me and the way my brain works, it was also exciting and relatively easy to understand the points he was getting at. I really look back on his class with appreciation and would love to have another class from him again.
