Incredibly confusing class. Topics are not explain clearly and grades are inconsistent with what asks for in assign. Easy class where attendance isn't really needed if you just want to pass something, but not a good GPA booster since everyone doesn't have a clue what their learning. Nice guy, but is very unaware of his surroundings and confusing.
Guy is very confusing... he means well and is a really nice man, but unfortunately he makes NO SENSE. No idea what this class was about. Yeah he is funny and quirky at times, but there is no structure to his lesson. His notes make no sense, uses them to jog his memory not for you to type down. No textbook, a midterm and a final.
Guy is a complete JOKE! he is extremely confusing, there is no organizational structure! Half of the time he doesn't even know what he wants to say, completely disregards his students opinions, puts nothing online so unfortunately class is mandatory and he is unclear with his expectations. You have a question mark in your head every class!!!!
I don't get these other comments. Guy is a funny and fantastic prof, and he is passionate and knowledgeable about a broad range of topics. His lectures can be loosely organized yes - but the objectives are pretty clear. If you don't have an open mind and are not interested in learning anything new, do not take his classes.
Guy is an amazing professor. He is enthusiastic about his teachings and loves student participation. Easy marker and highly understanding when it comes to meeting deadlines. You just have to take really good notes in his class to pass. Come on this is university, it's all about being an independent learner!
He is an easy going teacher, maybe too easy going because he gets off track so easily and keeps going on and on. He does not stick to the syllabus which makes planning and studying difficult. He is not very thorough in explaining the topics of the course. He's a nice guy but not a great prof.
Guy was a pretty good teacher. I was enrolled in aesthetic experience and ideas and he turned it into a music class.. He assumed we all know what the theromen and stuff was which I had no clue. It's pretty simple class but goes off topic ALOT! YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS OR ELSE YOU ARE SCREWED! everything he talked about was on tests
He was really funny in an awkward way, but it keeps the class very off track. If you don't show up to his class, or you don't pay attention you will not pass. Everything he says is definitely on the tests! It's really hard to pay attention sometimes which is not good because what he says is detrimental. A really nice guy, but not a great prof.
nope.
Very unprepared and unorganized for class. He often asks if he ever taught us specific material because he can't remember himself. Sometimes wastes class time and then always tries to rush and say everything at the end, making me stay an extra few minutes so i can write down what he says because he doesn't provide any notes at all.
not prepared. posted final exam study guide and half the things on there he never explained in class. very unclear and gets off track.
This class was a blast. It's very music based and before I took It I knew nothing about the topic. His course expands your horizons and gets you interested in new music and everything behind it. His ideas are abstract but he leaves each topic open to interpretation as long as you explain your thinking. Marking is very fair. Class trip to an opera!
Pretty nice guy, but as a prof he's alright. His class mostly focuses on music. He gets off topic frequently but explains what is necessary for assignments and tests. Some concepts are hard to grasp but if you show up to class you should do fine. Low workload so if you need the credits and have a busy semester, I recommend this class.
Great guy who cares about your grades.
Probably my least favourite class of all time. Guy is nice enough, but he is unfocused and rambles all the time. Its a guessing game as to whats important and whats not. Will never recommend to anyone. It's GNED... no one there is a music major. Relax Guy.
He's a nice dude but just wasn't the prof for me. His lectures drag on and feel longer than they are. He teaches a lot of content but isn't organized enough to teach it well.
I don't get why people hate Guy so much. There are a lot of lecture materials, but they are not hard! Guy explain the lecture materials well, and will take time to explain them to you until you understand them. His exams are easy. If you go to the class regularly, you will know all of the questions on the exam are based on lecture materials!
Guy's GNED1201 class is about music. I didn't think it was awful at all - in fact, I thought it expanded a lot of my knowledge on music. I found some things interesting & he does tries to engage the class. A bit disorganized/tends to ramble, but also quite funny. His class is an easy A if you put in the effort to just go to class - work is minimal.
Guy is very nice and is quite funny, being in his class is entertaining. If you don't have much of an interest in music then you may find this class boring and hard to attend. I was excited to get to study lots of different art forms, but unfortunately it was only music. Get good grades if you just show up and participate.
His lectures are super funny, lengthy but you'll get a good laugh out of it. It's an easy class to. He gets out of topic a lot but pay attention to his discussion as most test questions come from class. TAKE GOOD NOTES
"Guy is a nice guy"... but he is not clear when it comes to expectations. Somehow I ended up getting an "A" in his unit..."SHOCKINGLY" but i would not recommend taking his class honestly. Class was dry and not interesting at all. If you miss a class, you cant get the info, becuase he posts nothing on BB. Nothing. which is frustrating as a student.
Easy grader but his classes are all over the place. If you miss a class you will miss his what seems like off topic discussions. He barely writes anything on the board so you really have to listen to what he is saying. I would strongly recommend writing anything he says down, but your notes won't be organized at all.
I thought Guy was an awesome prof. He's hilarious. He definitely uses his humour and eccentricity to lighten up the class, which make his lectures more bearable for everyone. He's a bit of an oddball, but I found it quite entertaining. I'd take his class again, for sure.
Guy is funny. Altho his classes are interesting, it's unorganized and he does choose favourites tho this doesn't seem to affect his marking which isn't tough but extremely hard to follow because he doesn't clarify things until after you hand in your assignment. Make sure you take good notes because nothing will be posted on blackboard
If you're interested in learning about music this class is interesting but Guy is really bad at teaching. he is constantly unsure with his own train of thought and can't keep track of time. (He was always trying to shove information in during the last 5 minutes and would go over time). His tests are all on what he says so write down his every word!
Guy loves music and will try to teach it even to non-musicians. It's never clear what he wants on an assignment nor how he plans to mark it. The midterm had some questions that were never discussed in class and was unreasonable all way round. Guy was an aloof prof that was a pain in the ass to listen to. Anyone looking for an easy A, keep looking
No grading criteria is given, ever! only ever speaks of himself, never assigns anything, I've yet to learn anything from this class, he's completely self obsorbed and an idiot. Shouldn't be teaching.
I actually loved this class. This class really helped with conceptual ideas and thinking abstractly. My advise is to always go to lecture and come with an open mind. It was an easy A and very entertaining. I did not enjoy the class until about a month in, but then the concepts click and I looked forward to his class.
Guy means well and he seems like a really nice dude but I have no idea what going on 80% of the time in this class. He is really entertaining but I have a tough time forcing myself to go to this class. I've learnt nothing.
Guy is a nice guy and really cares about what he teaches. He doesnt post any notes online so DO NOT skip. He only writes names and dates on the board so you really have to listen to what he is saying out loud. Some things on midterm werent even discussed in class. He made boring material more interesting than I thought it could be.
Guy is really nice and is passionate about what he teaches! I found it to be a really enjoyable class. Almost no work outside of class aside from the occasional article to read and a few small response assignments. Show up for class, pay attention, take notes while he talks, and you'll get an A. Highly recommend this class, its a blast!
He's really hilarious and nice but I seriously don't understand what's going on. No slides just stands and talks. If you didn't grow up around classical music and operas, it's really hard. There's a lot of studying to do to get a decent grade on a quiz, like listening to music and remembering the piece and context. Not very easy and doesn't work
Guy is a good prof and is very caring and funny. He is really laid back on due dates eve though there were barely any assignments to hand in. He tries his best to make each class fun.
Guy is a good prof and he sure knows his stuff. I found his class very interesting. If you come to class, listen, take notes as he talks you are sure to get an A...
Guy's class is overall pretty bad. He says you don't need to know about music but if you come from a background with no musical knowledge it's pretty hard. If you have the option to take something else for the GNED requirement I highly recommend you take something else. He tries to make it fun but it's so boring in general
I don't really understand why the ratings for Guy is so bad. He is very lenient with due dates, allows reference sheets, and gives a midterm and final study guide. There is only three papers and he's pretty easy with marking if you support what you say. If you attend class and just writes whatever he says you should be fine.
Guy is absolutely hilarious and a little strange. He is a musicologist and for this reason this gned focuses on concepts surrounding music. It may be a little harder to understand if you have no musical background, but if you remember anything about rhythm from elementary, you should be okay.
Guy is really genuine teacher who is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes the content interesting, shows you videos to provide variety, and makes class as engaging as it can be. He is very lenient with due dates (there is 2 small papers and one big paper) and allows a cheat sheet for tests. review what he emphasized and you will do fine
Guy is amazing and hilarious. I found his class very engaging and enjoyed it very much. I agree that his rating on here is way too low. As long as you show up and get the assignments done (which are very fair and quite easy to do) you will enjoy his class and do well. Wish I could take another course with him in the future.
Guy is hilarious and super passionate about what he's teaching which helps a lot because tbh he centers the class on opera - first made me almost drop it - glad I didn't. First day brought his kid also he never shows up on time but what is taught in class is important because he doesn't put anything on bb. Do what he asks, dont skip, easy A.
I really enjoyed this class and will truly miss it next semester. Guy is a really nice prof and tried to make class interesting. He's hilarious, random and really passionate about music. This class was pretty easy and gave me a different perspective and appreciate for classical music. I highly recommend this class to anyone needing a requirement.
This class can best be described as wonky. You never really know what is going on as most of the terms are not explained and either in Latin, Italian, French, or German. There is not much work to do but that just adds to the misunderstanding of information. You can get by without showing up to many lectures and just reading class summary's.
At first you might think Guy is a little weird but tbh, he'll warm up to you. He is absolutely hilarious and everything he does in class evidently teaches you what you need to know. He's very interesting and doesn't lack in his humour. He knows his stuff too! He's really good at teaching about what he loves, which is obviously music so don't fret
I'm not sure really how to describe him. To be honest, you don't really do all that much, and there's no final, but that's about all there is to his class. If you're there as a grade booster, you're in the right spot. However, if you value your brain cells, you may want to look elsewhere. Easy A if you show up.
no idea what he is talking about in his lectures. His quizzes cover material not learned in class. TERRIBLE. that is all.
Guy is really fun and easy going but sometimes his assignments are unclear and complicated and it's really hard to get answers from him that make things clearer. Overall, it's a easy going class and he usually just talks but it's important to go to class because he doesn't update blackboard all the time so it's easy to fall behind so go to class!!!
Guy's really chill, he doesn't take late marks which was amazing, he is a bit weird but he's clearly just passionate about music A LOT. his class was really easy, if you show interest he'll love you, the quizzes and midterm were pretty easy, just know your operas, no heavy group work, overall it wasn't that bad, just a bit weird at times
WASTE. Complete waste of your time, this course brought my GPA down significantly, He is such a hard marker and his tests are absolutely ridiculous. There is not a text book or any notes posted to refer to and its hard to write notes yourself as his lectures are dry. Taking this class was the worst mistake i have ever made in university and BEWARE!
Mr Obrecht is the most interesting professor i have ever had. One class we were analyzing the song Gold Digger by Kanye West for about 20 minutes. Overall, cool person to talk to as well as very fair when it comes to marks.
Mr Obrecht is an interesting professor. In all honesty his classes are very boring but if you do show up and put in the minimum effort you should end up with an easy A. Just pay attention to what he is looking for on assignments/ midterm reviews and should do fine.
He is hilarious and I always find myself bursting out laughing during his lectures. Not everybody will understand his humour but for me its great. He has a passion for music and if you do as well it will be a fun class. Overall the class is pretty easy but I would take one of his classes again just for how he made is so enjoyable!
One of the worst professors at MRU. Defiantly avoid unless you are trying to mess up your GPA. Tests you on stuff not even presented in class. Stay away from Guy and his class.
Avoid at any cost!
hard class if you have never watched 30 hours of opera before. the content is stupid and guy is a terrible teacher. I would be in honor roll without this class
There was not a lot of direction when it came to projects, and no outside of class help either. The course seemed very unorganised. It was interesting, but you need a lot of notes to keep up with what he is saying. Ask a lot of questions about new topics, because they seem to change the more he talks about it, especially prepping for tests.
Hated this class. The material should be interesting but he makes it so dry. Always seems awkward & you can never get a straight answer out of him. Things on the midterm are not what he said they would be. I only aced this class because I had previous music knowledge. Assignments are supposed to be creative but he only is looking for certain things
This man is not a good prof. He said something in one of the lecture that got him in trouble with the chair of General Education. He is disorganized in his lectures and makes note taking hard. Although he did create an outline of one of the test which was very helpful. If he didnt do that I would of failed the test just from his lectures alone.
Boring and lame
Grading system isnt clear at all, avoid this class it would mess up your gpa
Guy talks quite slowly and softly and he often goes off-topic, but it's worth hanging around. He always gets his point across clearly. Answers to the questions he gives are clear in each lecture. He's really cool. Tests are too easy if you attend the lectures and answer the questions. Everyone in my class loves him. I disagree with the hate.
Loved this class! Guy was entertaining and the online class felt really easy. If you watched the lectures and showed up it was definitely and easy A.
Actually a really good prof, he actually lectured instead of assigning youtube videos. His tests are super straight forward and he gives a study guide beforehand. Always good and relevant conversation in lecture too
If you're not interested in musicology, don't take his class! While the class description stated "examine literature masterpiece" he only ever focused on the musicology of the novel study and neglected a number of other themes or topics within the study that would be more relatable within a GNED class. He's also very unorganized & scatter brained!
One of the most useless teachers ive had. His ability to teach and help you understand the content is utterly pathetic. In the class we were working through a question all together no one knows how to get the answer so we all start to guess. after a good minute someone got it and his response oh good we can move to the next topic. Garbage teacher.
As a person Guy is an 11/10. He clearly cares about students and tries to make lectures engaging and entertaining.. I always leave class smiling. HOWEVER, as a prof, Guy is extremely vague on course concepts/material and is a truly horrific teacher when you ask questions. I've never felt so lost in a course with all my classmates - Save your GPA!!
Obrecht's class was a sh*t show... please do not waste your time taking this course. For 1203, we didn't learn anything remotely related to cultural perspectives on science. 50% of it is just boring music philosophy. The midterm was on music notation, and even with a musical background I had difficulty with it.
I never thought it would be so fun taking this class. He goes off-topic sometimes, and would make the whole class laugh at his jokes and examples during the lectures but that's what makes hi class great. It never gets boring or uninteresting. He made the lectures easy to understand, and he is very helpful when you have questions about the topics.
If you're planning on taking 1203, know that it focuses on music theory, though misleading when choosing courses, it's a very fun class. Guy tends to wander off in lectures but is always very clear in his teachings. His study guides for midterm, finals and even just homework assignments are the most helpful things. Overall would reccomend
I looked forward to going to this class. Guy will make your day. If you go to class and pay attention, you will do well in this course. Guy was my fav prof of the semester! My only critique is that I find the language he uses in class is not always the same as the assignments, so sometimes is it hard to tell exactly what he is asking for.
I took 1203 with Obrecht and we did not learn anything related Cultural perspectives on science and instead he taught music notation. He was all over the place in his lectures and hard to follow. He takes long to reply to emails and does not answer questions thoroughly. I was lost most of the class. Save your time and avoid Obrechts class.
he wasn't HORRIBLE-he was mediocre. show up to class or ur screwed, ps he gives solid study guides for the midterm & final. thought this class'd be diff but mans made it about musical notation & philosophy/hist of music (put in some time, u will be fine). btw check ur profs actual department b4hand, (they relate gned classes heavily to their dept).
the worst class ever... AVOID AT ALL COSTS. teaches really difficult concepts for people who aren't doing a music degree, such as complicated music theory and classical philosophy. do not take this if you're looking for an easy A.
hes HILARIOUS. BUT the class is hard and you have to go to every class or you will NOT do good
oh man, all i can say is absolutely do not take 1203 with obrecht unless you're a music major. it was REALLY hard, with a lot of difficult concepts.
Respectfully, what is going on in this class. Please someone help. If you don't know anything about music do not take this class. Underprepared lectures, scatterbrained, does not interact through D2L well, almost unreachable outside of class. If you don't come to lectures, honestly even if you do gfl understanding anything.
don't take GNED 1203 unless you're very comfortable with music theory. didn't talk for a second about cultural perspectives on science, just jumped into complicated music theory.
Although the class is mostly about music, it is a good GPA-boosting class, plus he is absolutely hilarious. There are a lot of assignments but he goes over them and if you ask questions, he will give you the answer. There are some confusing philosophy topics but it is overall pretty interesting and obviously passionate about what he's teaching.
As a person, Guy is amazing and really funny and caring towards students and deadlines. But as a professor? From the first day of classes I was lost. His lectures have no structure and he'll only vaguely touch on topics, but you're expected to understand it all? Going to class didn't even really help me because he wasn't great at explaining topics.
THE FUNNIEST GUY AROUND. his class was a breath of fresh air if you are in other hard courses with lots of content. His class had not too much homework and most of it was pretty easy if you just attended class and wrote what he wrote on the whiteboard. Overall looked forward to his class and if I missed class once in a while it was not a big deal
As a person: best prof I've had. Funny and entertaining. His class was relief from my others. Not great at explaining concepts (Music theory&philosophy). You have to go to all classes. Not much hw, he allows reference sheets for exams (HUGE+). No group projects&an easy grader. His class will be the best or worst you'll ever take so I'd say risk it
The course description does not apply at all. You'll learn music theory mostly & philosophy. The course is easy if you show up & copy his notes. Very easy grader & funny guy. His classes are chill & relaxed. He's kind of all over the place but anything you don't understand can be easily googled. I laughed every class and was never bored. Easy A.
This class was not what I had in mind. Instead of science, we were learning about music. I think his main issue is because he has an extensive amount of knowledge about music, he finds it hard to explain things to others, so it leaves the students confused. He's a very good person, just not a very good professor. I would not take this class again.
I had an absolutely awful experience in this class. The profs idea of teaching is going on long tangents and writing a few definitions on the board. Random phrases that he uses once will appear on the quiz, so write absolutely everything down. Unless you already have a rock solid foundation in music theory, avoid this course at all costs!
It was team-taught by Guy and Brennan. The lectures were interesting enough but super strange. Tests were insane, full of random things that seemed like an afterthought. I have no idea how anyone would get above a B. This class is a GPA buster. Unnecessarily difficult. The class will seem like it is going to be a breeze, do not be fooled.
Guy is the most bizarre and awful teacher I have has in the last 21 years of my life. He goes on the most irrelevant and odd rants. Leaves the class. And should no longer be allowed go be a prof. Surprised this guy is able to feed dress and drive himself with the way he acts. Absolute POS
Guy is an odd fella. His lectures were so boring and the projects/homework sucked. He is really weird, I saw him running around the school the other day. His "concerts" were stupid. I hope he can find a way to make his classes better. His inclusion in the faculty makes the school less credible in my opinion.
Dr. Obrecht is a memorable professor who delivers lectures that are exciting and entertaining. His classroom exudes a calm atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression. I highly recommend considering Dr. Obrecht as your professor.
Strangest prof I have ever had but I love the dudes energy and passion. He seems slightly disorganized at times but not to really any negative impact on class outcomes. However, he could definitely be more clear about course outcomes. Have some basic music theory background, makes it way easier.
Guy's nice and all, but he's very disorganized. His lectures are super boring. It's not an easy course, there's a midterm and final exam and other nonsensical assignments. If you don't come to class, the course WONT make sense. The content is just nonsense, I would choose a different course and different prof if you want an easy-going GNED class.
All of his classes revolve around music theory. I knew a bit about music theory, so I was ok, but you will struggle if you have no music experience. Nice guy, but strange. His teaching methods are weird and he goes on lots of random tangents. You have to go to class as there are no slides or anything. Write down everything he writes on the board.
I let this guy know that I would be in another country on the date of the midterm. 50 DAYS IN ADVANCE. I PLEADED. I ASKED FOR EVERY OPTION. Guess what he said? "Nothing I can do". Well that was a lie, because there are options for students in this circumstance. It's usually teachers in meaningless classes that r the most authoritarian. Humility.
I think he is nice but I wish he would have been more organized. The assignments were easy though but his lectures were a little difficult to understand. You will need to write everything down in order to do well in the course. The course also goes into music theory and philosophy.
Guy is one of the strangest profs I have ever had. His lectures are fun and the class is certainly a unique experience. I don't know much about music theory so I struggled a bit with the content, but that's my only complaint.
His 1203 course that I took is basically a music class. He doesn't provide resources on where to find answers for his homeworks but they can easily be found online. His lectures are really boring and sometimes is not even about the topic but the class is really easy and he marks really fair. Missing a class is okay.
Worst professor you can ever imagine. Never uses ppt or class notes, you have to sit and listen to him talking for 3 hours and expect everything tobe in the exam. Also, very tough grader.
Guy is a good person, not a good teacher. He doesn't use any slides, talks slowly but with a monotonous voice. It was a bit hard to take notes at times. There is a document which briefly outlines each lecture (not study level). He is very understandable when students have issues and is open to give extension, or increase grade with good reasoning.
Professor Obrecht was a fine professor, but at times felt like he was unsure of the lecture content he was sharing. He uses no slides or notes so attendance is mandatory and evaluations are quite specific, so if you do not inquire personally with him about expectations prepare for a poorer grade then you would otherwise.
Weird weird weird guy.
This guy just talks and talks with no end and no clear direction. If you can somehow decipher his lectures lucky you, if not, you'll be teaching yourself everything before tests. He's nice and he does want everyone to do well, though. He just doesn't ever have a plan of what he wants to teach.
Guy is kind of a bad prof. He doesn't explain concepts very well, and he talks VERY slowly. The concepts he explains are really interesting but he is not very well planned, and honestly boring. If you have ADHD stay away. He is really funny and cares a lot about his students, but get ready to teach yourself everything.
