Fun easy class. The field trips were kinda annoying. She teaches off of notes u get in the book store. But u have to go to class b/c u have to fill in the blanks. Hopefully she is as easy teaching Bio 211B. (next semester)
Class is very easy, and she knows what she's talking about. Field trips are way fun. Easy A.
Hands down the easiest Bio class you will ever take at CSULB, and it's fun. She loves what she teaches and that works in the students favor.
She does her lecture powerpoint and a quiz every lecture. my lab instructor is cool laid back. Dr. Goodmanlowe offers extra credit, but her exams can be a little tricky however.
If you show up for class it is pretty easy. She's really nice and the lectures are interesting. The labs are cool too because you go on awesome field trips and do a lot of hands on type things.
Extra credit got me an A. Tests are tricky, quizzes all add up and the labs saved my butt. I ended up getting 78 and 80 on the exam and got an A. The YellowFin got me seasick, buthtat is okay. Take her for biology

Awesome class. Fun labs. Great GE class (and I hate bio so that means a lot coming from me). I had to go to lab on Friday afternoon and that wasn't even so bad because my TA (Bret) was really cool.
Easy to follow lectures. There are quizzes for every class meeting but they are easy. Her tests are easy as well. Make sure you are willing to go to the fieldtrips though.
this class was very easy as long as you attended and took the quizzes, we also watched a lot of cool videos
Ok, this is a nice teacher. (but....) She consistently teaches the wrong information and does not always seem to know how the math works, which makes some of her lectures confusing. Come to every class on time or else you will have an extremely lower grade. Seriously avoid it if you are a late or absent person or a procrastinator.
Awesome Professor! Lectures are PowerPoint and go right along w/ the note packet. Super easy and interesting. The best lab to take is Friday afternoon's, Jesus Reyes = best lab instructor.
The notes u print out for every lecture are very easy to follow along n keeps u awake. She makes mistakes here n there, but who doesnt? The tests arent that hard either as long as you go over your lec n lab notes. Go to every lecture though cuz she has 5 pt quizzes (pretty easy) beg. of each lecture n they CAN HURT you if u dont go. =)
When she finally got the information correct it was easy material to understand. The tests were fairly simple except for the final where she threw in a bunch of curve balls.
Great teacher. She is really nice and the information is fascinating. All the notes are typed up for you and easy to follow. Go to class or your grade may suffer.
You must attend every class and turn in all of your homework if you want to pass this class. Dr. G obviously doesn't understand the mathematical concepts required for the course, and her notes are completely unlike any of the material in the textbook. Overall, this is a wannabe science course. The concepts were junk. The end.
Must attend every class cause there is a quiz in every class. It is an easy general ed class. She is a great teacher.
Cryptic quiz. 8-805AM . Show you are disciplined and go far.. further than with math skills. Poor to no Quiz grades can drag you down 2 grades. Unbelievable there are no choices for alternate profs. Unbelievable the Dept does nothing to change. What happens when a bio prof teaches Math? Make up for lackluster with Machiavellian principles.
this class is an easy B, but you have to do all the quizes at the beginning of each class. This teacher is unfair when it comes to grading. she marks you down for stupid things like not showing work on a multiple choice test??? how do you do that. very nit picky, makes the class harder than it really is
probably the easiest lecture instructor. all you must do is show up everyday and collect points for the daily quizes. a "B" is easy to get, but an "A" will require you to get around all her tricky questions(because it's the only way to get ppl to miss points).
Getting a 'B' is pretty easy, but because she is kind of a picky grader you need to really know your stuff to get an 'A' in the class. The 2min 5point quizzes at the start of class can really help you or hurt you bad. Her exams are 25 questions multiple choice, each worth 4pts...get a couple wrong and it really brings down your grade.
Be prepared to memorize a lot. You take notes by filling in the blanks off a PowerPoint she provides. You are quizzed every class. And your lab instructor can decide almost half your grade. She is still the best to take BIO 153 with. Nice person just very strict grading style. Maybe a little too strict for a GE class. Passing this class is easy passing with an 'A' is something else.
Her class was super easy. There is a five point quiz every class meeting for lecture, and ten point ones for lab. The lectures consist of fill-in the blank pre-written notes that go along with her power points. It is easy if you are good at science.
The material isn't hard to understand, there's just A LOT of new vocab and the words are difficult to remember when you've never heard them before. There's a ridiculous amount of material included on the 1st exam. I don't understand why she didn't divide the semester more evenly. An A is possible, you just need a lot of self discipline for it.
Gets mixed up while teaching. Doesn't know the material well enough to get it right the first time so corrects herself the next class. Frustrating. I've stopped reading Nature. They published a paper she contributed to? Please!
Marine Bio!!! Learn about Dolphins and stuff!! Sound fun right!???!?!?!?............................ ................................ Biology 153 is the most ridiculous GE class at Cal State Long beach. Take it if you really like memorizing things about mammals and shark fin soup.
Dr. G is one of the most helpful and involved teachers i've ever had.This class is pretty hard, especially if your taking it for a GE! I got A's on the exams but I missed a few in-class quizzes and my grade went WAY down..so DONT MISS THOSE!the labs for this class are amazing and it's so cool that we get the opportunity to go on all the field trips
Dr.G is a over zealous teacher who forgets that it is a Biology 153 course .It is a 100 level class with 300 level intensity. If you think this class is gonna be fun yeah right Dr. G sucks the life out of her class with her grading. If you come to class every time it meets does not mean you will pass you must pass all of her test in order to pass
she treated us like 5th graders - fill in the blank notes and all... the quizzes are on irrelevant material that is not emphasized during class. got an A but only because i'm good at blind memorization.
This class has kept many from GRADUATING!! "Dr. G" can give a hoot about you and your career goals, let alone your degree, unless you're a marine biologist. Stupid class, mean teacher, and it's only a GE! DON'T TAKE Intro to Marine Bio, take Bio 100!
I have no idea whats wrong with the people complaining about Dr G. Complaining about fill-in-the-blank notes? It happened to save me lots of writing and I found it very helpful. Class was very easy, I aced every test without reading the book. I happened to get a B in that class because I blew an assignment. Oh well. that class was very fun though.
if you want a class that is the low in your class schedule, one that reminds you of grade school, is complete blind memorization, and a teacher that absolutely kills any interest you had in the subject, take this class. dr g as a college teacher is a complete joke. she is why tenure is a bad word, some people are not meant to be teachers.

this teacher's main mission is to fail as many students as possible... She gives random quizes so you can't leave class early or show up late.. she is not helpful and she gives you a ton of information you must memorize this is only a GE but it is treated like grad school
Due to the nature of the class...lots of memorization required. Labs are alot of fun. Less concepts than a general biology course. Quizzes are pretty random...but don't count for much. Reccomend if you don't want to take a reg. ol bio course
Ok. Listen i dont why ppl are saying her class was hard. its really not. there is a quiz every week about 4 questions. the questions are straight from the note. The lab was super easy.If you dont like working in the lab get in a group and copy.there is no HW. there is alot of extra credit. its was a fun class and kind of intresting.
ok. not exactly my favorite class. This is a GE class that is DEFINITELY not graded like one. She expects alot from you, but it is very possible to pass the class. Has a hard time managing a lecture hall, so she comes across as mean and rude. I honestly don't think I would recommend the class, I passed but it was not worth the effort.

Plan on attending class every single time because you have a worthless 5 pt quiz. Class shoud be worth 4 credits b/c of the lab and how much work is required. I had a 12pm lab and saw nothing b/c of high tide and was a waste of gas driving EVERYWHERE for fieldtrips. lectures put you to sleep. reads straight from the ppt. hard tests.
Sure, this class entails work, but this is a University right?! Just go to class, pay attention, read the book, and study them all. Dr. G. is very helpful during office hours, she is always willing to help you understand the material, but you musttake advantage of it. I learned so much in this class, I would reccomend it, it is just work, duh!
I greatly enjoyed this class--the field trips were hugely fun and interesting. She is very candid and helpful, but pay attention during class or she WILL call you out. You MUST buy the book and study for the quizzes. Great class, great teacher; if you have any interest in Marine Biology, or just need a GE, take her.
shes passionate about marine animals, Knows her stuff. lecture is fill in the blank with the booklet she made, easy. tests come straight from lecture and beacboard articles she posts. helpful. gets annoyed when people talk during lecture. Quiz EVERYDAY, no make-ups so must attend class. never get out early. keeps you interested.
Class is a joke. Show up to take a pointless quiz for "participation points" that is on material irrelevant to the course and fill in the blanks to "take notes" like a good drone. The only reason I'd take a class in a big hall is to skip whenever I want. 1st & 2nd yrs might find this class difficult only because it's more difficult than 12th grade.
Lame quizzes every class, so you must go every time. Bad attitude, not funny. Not a hard class, but never did I look forward to it.
The participation points are easy if you pay attention. Best part about class is how clear it is: do the work, get the grade, stop complaining.
This class is an easy B. Don't bother buying the book; just share a book with someone during labs. Carpool for labs that are really far away. Just make sure to come on time every day because sometimes the daily quizzes are at beginning of class, or at end of class.
Shes seriously crazy. Has weird little pet peeves and is way in love with Marine Bio. The class is so boring (everything is a fill in the blank powerpoint), and the tests are kind of difficult. Attendance is pretty mandatory unless you have friends taking the notes. Had to work for a B.
Took her for honors marine bio which was much harder than the normal bio because your tests are NOT MCs but essays, fill ins, definitions... and did i mention ESSAYS?! It's still a pretty easy class - go to every session and study the notes and you'll be just fine. Nothing memorable (good/bad) about this class.
Professor is absurd
Her lectures make the material very easy, but her tests are almost impossible to do well on. She has trick questions on everything,and gives you no practice with these types of questions prior to the exam. When students asked about the questions she took a "too bad so sad" approach. very weird about any kind of sounds during her lecture. bad prof
Likes to asks questions on tests that are quite irrelevant. If it wasn't for her trick questions, you'd be better off not coming to class. Take this class with Dr.Young instead, much better teacher.
She spends your class time hunting down the one student whose phone made an obscene chirp and deducts points. Easily distracted by background chatter that any other prof would ignore. Notes contain annoying fill-in-the-blanks that require your second-by-second attention. It's more like a game to fill in your blanks than it is a lecture. Avoid her.
She's mean and she puts study guides the night before without telling you. Waste of time
What's the point of studying the things the class focuses on if she's just going to ask the most obscure information? Take someone else if you can.
I had her for Bio 111 & got D's on her exam. I got her again for Bio 213 & got a D on the 1st exam. but I earned a high B+ on the 2nd one! So I have found the secret to acing her exams for biology, & I really wish I can take her again! My method involves: making an outline before class & using a voice recorder. I found this class to be pretty easy. Go to lecture, take the 5 question quiz (which actually helps your grade) and stay for the notes, which are ALL fill in the blank. For the test, she gives you the study guide with the exact questions for the test. Im not gonna lie, its a lot of work and memorizing, but if you're good at that, it's an easy A.
I needed this class in order to graduate and Dr.G was totally un-empathetic. She told me tough luck. So I crashed every marine bio lab until I got in. Only to find out that she gives lectures where she makes you fill-in-the-blank in a workbook. And don't try asking her a question. She obviously hates her job and in no way can lecture. Avoid her
Dr. G is an awesome teacher. Her expected work to be done in this class is very reasonable. The tests are straight from the lectures and you don't really need the book. She has a book of all the lecture outlines that you buy and you just fill them in from class. The class is interesting. I learned a lot about the environment!
She quizzes on totally pointless info. You pretty much have to show up to every class to pickup all the little useless details. It's no use asking for help at office hours either.
Class is easy as long as you show up and take notes, which are from a fill in the blank lecture note packet. 5 point iclicker quiz everyday and 3 tests (but she made the last one optional). She has a study guide online and many of the questions are on the test. Overall very easy class if you show up, take notes and do the study guide.

Class itself is interesting. She isn't too bad of a professor, but she SUCKS at giving tests. She puts in trick questions that have multiple correct answers depending on how you read them and she PURPOSELY throws in typos. She gives her students no reason to trust her. She told us how she would grade a test and then changed it w/o notice.
I'll just use some adjectives to describe her and her class: Caustic, bitter, abrasive, acrid, superfluous, abominable, abhorrent, expensive, tedious, arid, insensitive, and arduous.
Dr. G is a lot more easy going than these comments would suggest. Yeah, you have a quiz every day on pointless facts, but they're meant to keep track of attendance. Sorry folks, you have to take school seriously for once.
I love how there are zero decent alternatives for this useless GE in terms of time slots and teacher availability. In response to Mr/Ms assumption below, I take my school very seriously, but this idiotic teacher has no idea how to teach effectively. It should be a students responsibility to prepare for tests, not some pointless daily quizzes.
Tests are hard but the material is easy. Record her lectures, listen to the details, and fill out her study guides; you'll at least get a B. She doesnt put the right answers to her bb quizzes so don't believe the 10/10 you first see on your grades. She also doesnt exactly know her material in depth, so don't ask in depth questions on the material.

I loved listening to lecture, but she talks super fast and expects you to write everything down (so have a recorder ready). I went to office hours a few times to ask for clarification and she comes off very standoff-ish,not wanting to repeat herself. I love the subject though, so the class wasn't bad :) Her exams are pretty challenging!
Talks too fast. Record her lectures since you can't possibly write down everything she says; some of those things are on the exams. The exams are hard, but doable.
Honestly, listen and study her every word and you will get an A. I know that sounds like a lot, but she actually lectures based on exam questions. I have taken her for two classes and got an A on every test she has given. And I don't get many A's. Take time to study...really study. Don't cram, it won't work. Don't have your phone on either!!!
EASY class! Notes are fill-in-the-blank style by following her powerpoint (she goes fast, but not too fast). Is helpful when you ask & really cares about the subject. Has daily quizzes from the material covered in the previous class + those are easy points! Her quizzes + tests are almost word for word, so just reading through once/twice is enough.
Notes are all fill in. Says to buy the book. Not used to much. Weekly quizzes. Comes from the notes. Really easy. Tests are easy. Just be sure to double check and take your time. Some questions may throw you off even though they seem easy. Fun class. Learned a lot. Would recommend.
I generally enjoyed Dr. G's class- her lectures are well organized and interesting. Most students record her lectures and listen to them later to study-which helped much more than the textbook. Her exams are not too hard although the questions are not the most straightforward. she isn't very helpful during office hours-seems to know limited info.
Super easy class!! Do the fill in notes and review them for the quizzes before class. Did her study guide and got an A on every test! Just be sure to attend every class to get all the notes. She's really funny too. Great prof.
Great prof, she's firm on discipline and expects hard work so study the pwpts and follow her rules and you'll do well.
Dr. G doesn't like things from the book so she will give her own examples and explanations of the concepts; didn't use the book. Record the lectures and make sure to review all she says. I felt that she asked sort of trick questions on her exams or at least had ones on topics she briefly discussed. Overall I preferred the second half of 213.
AMAZING
Literally don't even bother asking a question about the material because she will most likely not know the answer. It seems that her catch phrase is "I don't know." Which is ironic because she expects her students to know everything. A lot of material is covered in one test and the tests are very specific. She's interesting, I'll give her that.
She has no empathy, I'm almost sure she assumes that her class is the only science class you're taking, and her organization of the class is horrible. She doesn't let you use computers in class (WHICH IS HOW I STUDY), so that made the process for me very hard. Everyone has their own way of studying for bio... that decision made it so hard for me.
Great professor! easy A for non science majors! show up because there are daily iclicker quizzes, but if you go to class they aren't difficult at all. offered tons of extra credit from the beginning. If you like your grade by the end of the semester, no final! I had a 97% by the end of it, so I didnt have to take the final!
Dr. G. is a very hard grader, her expectations are high. Class was not what we expected, and was a little boring for a Marine Mammals class. Best fieldtrips of my student life. Tons of reading, and writing in exams and papers to prepare as well as presentation.

I loved her lecture. She has this blue note book that you must fill out in class. And it is just makes life so much easier. All you have to do is read that before the daily Clicker quizzes and exams and you'll pass. There is an OPTIONAL final. Easy lectures. And the field trips are hella fun.
One of the most disorganized/clueless professors I have ever had. Print notes/record lectures because she rushes through slides like no tomorrow. Can ask for help but she won't know answers or will tell you the opposite of what she said during lecture. Tests are tough: full of trick questions and info from book she doesn't cover and doesn't know
Very pessimistic professor. If you fail her first exam with a D, she'll recommend you to drop the class and tell you that you won't make it. Tough exams and she expect you to know her materials in small detail even though she doesn't even know them herself. Ask questions and she loves to reply "I don't know." Overall, she's just full of herself.
Avoid. "I don't know" is what she says when students ask questions 90% of the time. Doesn't know the material, gives incorrect information, but expects you to know the correct details about EVERYTHING for tests. Lecture is rushed, but no laptops allowed, so bring a recorder; anything is fair game, even if it was something mentioned for 2 seconds.
Notice she gets GREAT reviews from students who didn't take her for 213, but this class, she's horrible. She's a good teacher in general. The problem is that 213 is packing two 3 unit courses into one 4 unit course. Something has to give. For her, it's student stress levels. But there is hope: search her class on Quizlet and FB... You're Welcome!
Goodmanlowe knows the material (for the most part) but is very condescending, pushes her liberal opinions (stating them as facts), refuses to fix HER mistakes on VERY poorly written exams (at the expense of your grade), and was passive aggressive in office hours. Gets bad ratings on teacher evaluations but she and the school do NOTHING to fix this.
The WORSE professor I've taken in my college career! I've never known a professor that HIGH ENCOURAGES students to drop the course if their failing! Exams are TOUGH because she want you to know random details of the stories she tells not the actual material. If that wasn't enough you have to read like 15-20 articles for the exam. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!
Tests are hard and questions are very tricky. SHE IS VERY SPECIFIC on FRQ and test questions. Do not take her if you aren't the type to read the book. She gives extra credit for participation.
Really tough class. Lab is tough as well. DO MASTERINGBIO EVERY WEEK! I read the power points, recorded the lectures, re listened to lectures, read the chapters in book, took notes on the chapters, and I still get C's on exams. She asks a question to random people everyday for those borderline grades. Study everyday. Read book before lectures.
Dr. G is a really nice professor. She takes no crap and doesn't play around, but she ultimately cares about her students. She is super passionate about Marine Bio and she is funny in lecture. Make sure to study for the tests though! Her study guides are super helpful. I would highly recommend her! maybe she'll even let you hold a whales junk bone
very test heavy. Her study guides are built of 50-100 questions and once answered (by students) they get to like 10+ pages long. That is a lot of material to memorize for exams. Hates tardy people. I feel like this class is not good for non marine bio majors. Too much work for a GE, take nutrition instead.
Let me start by saying she should not teach this class. Her tests were harder than my 300 level classes. Extremely tricky even when i took notes and read the book. Sadly the only way out is through. She is condescending especially when you dont pass her exams. Beware of her lectures, you will be called out. So know your stuff.
So this class is by no means an easy A. That being said, she is fair, her tests are based on lectures *RECORD LECTURES*, articles are also on the test, reading is only for notes you bring to class. If she says to remember something on the slides then just highlight it. The class is doable, just focus on lecture notes and you should be fine.
She made me feel dumb most of the time because I would ask her a question and she would sigh. Her tests are extremely tough, which doesnt make sense because her lectures are vague and go in different directions every time. She expects you to know the nitty gritty of things even if she doesnt know them herself. I would avoid totally.
I love Dr. G, but I'm a marine biology major so I may be bias. I think that for a 3 unit the class is a lot of work as it includes reading outside of class and lab work. But, it is nothing that you cannot handle (especially if you have a passion for the ocean.) Her tests were similar to her study guides and as long as you read then you'll be fine.
She's a good professor, i'm not sure why a lot of people dislike her. Read ahead, she calls on people during lecture. Volunteer if you know the answer and you'll never be called on again. Lecture is fill in the blank power point slides. Record lectures ! Tests are about 65 MC and 4 SA questions. No pop quizzes, iClicker, or Mastering Biology.
I enjoyed taking this class and learning about marine biology however this class was not easy. Going to class for the lectures and reading helps a lot as well as studying. Three hour labs were fun but had quizzes a lot. Studying is crucial. Professor is so sweet and has a true passion for Marine biology!
This class was also with Dr. Tsai who teaches the second half of the class. Memorize the PowerPoints because she will ask anything thats on them for the exams. Material was interesting to learn. Will randomly call on people to answer questions for class points.

She's a great professor and the class is well structured (for bio153). The note packet that she provides for purchase is fill in the blank style which makes lectures really easy to listen to. Lots of work because of the additional lab activities but fun field trips. Highly recommend that you do the extra credit, it makes a difference.
Her class is really easy if you go over the note packet and record the lectures. She doesn't post the slides so its best to record them. Exams are easy and there is plenty of extra credit. I don't like that she is mean to certain students. She will call you out or embarrass you, so don't come late or use your phone in class or make out with your bf
professor was disrespectful and condescending when explaining an answer. she marks points off your test for being late and belittles you as a student. although she was a good lecturer, the environment in her class was very hostile and hindered learning. when she doesn't have time to cover a topic, she still expects students to know it for the exam.
She is a great at teaching. Her lectures are entertaining and I love the note packets (they make note-taking much easier). But she is strict on tardiness and phones. Overall, great professor!
She can be a bit punitive and cranky at times, but it's just because it is an entry level class, and she gets students from other departments that don't care. Cancelled the final if you were happy with the grade you had, and really supportive especially if you're marine bio and she's your advisor. Show up to class!
Dr. G is great, she's super helpful in office hours and outside of class. 213 was pretty difficult since a majority of your grade is the exams. She gives study guides but they are insanely long and very time-consuming so start them AHEAD OF TIME (trust me). The class was very interesting and, just study hard for tests and you'll pass with an A.
I took Dr. G in the summer and she was great! She gives you study guides with review questions that are SUPER helpful for the exams. Her grading is fair and straight up and she is very sweet and cares about her students. I would definitely take her again in the future, There's quizzes for every chapter and 4 exams.
Had her for online class, has very poor slides with little material and only her shrill voice. Easy lecture quizzes, straight-forward exams, study heavily for lab quizzes, that is where I lost my A. She also had all of the gradebook incorrect the entire semester and admitted her mistake after the final class session, calculate your own grade.
2 quizzes every week, 1 discussion day per week where you must participate for extra credit points (how I got an A). LOTS of slides- have to listen to her screeching recordings to get info, almost worth it for quizzes+exams. Review questions didn't help much for exams, you need to know the material. everything is graded in lab and lec, do ur best

Do not take this class for a g.e. She is rude and has an attitude when you ask for help. Her notes do not help at all with the tests and she is not a good teacher.
Had quizzes 2x a week that were based on prerecorded lectures, and class is just going over quiz questions. Can be a bit condescending at times and purposefully makes tests difficult as well as take away extra credit due to of paranoia of cheating. Content wise, has a lot of unnecessary info that will be tested so don't slack off on review q's.
I've taken her classes before nd have enjoyed them. I found this course extremely difficult. No matter how much I studied for the quizzes I rarely got a good grade. Only a minute per question is not enough time especially for the free response ones. basically entire grade is dependent on quiz and test scores so I barely passed.
Professor does take attendance! As long as you show up and take notes, you should at least pass the class if not ace it. Also, the field trips are soo much fun! We would go on boats, beaches, aquariums, etc.
Her quiz questions are sometimes a bit tricky but mostly fair and straight to the point. You will not pass if you don't watch the lectures and take notes. Though, of the classes I've had with the powerpoint slides with audio, hers were the most enjoyable because she is very passionate about what she teaches.
I had this awful professor in undergrad. She failed me bc she did not want to round my grade at 69.5% she was the only bio class I ever failed and she had the audacity to tell me I would not go anywhere in life with the grades I currently have. I still ended up graduating on time and a licensed pharmacist but will never forget how she ridiculed me.
Expect lots of quizzes and exams in this class. The professor is passionate but her teaching style can be hit or miss. Powerpoint slides are dense, so use unstuck study to streamline your study prep.
