she just wants you to know everything, she doesn't explain much but depends on you and expects you to know everything. I'd never take this teacher again.
It is her first time teaching the quarter system. She is trying new things so it is a little unorganized. However, she is a good teacher. She knows her stuff. Tests are fair but challenging. She likes us to be more practical and use what we learn on practical level.
very disappointed. I really regret taking this teacher.
I enjoyed taking this class. It was fun going on a lab field trip to learn about specimens in their own environment instead of lab. Lecture can get long at times. Weekly quizzes prevented me from getting too far behind in chapter reading. Gwen is very receptive and open to feedback & tries to accommodate different learning styles when she can.
Class was overall good. It was her first time teaching the course and was disorganized at times. I think this won't be an issue next time. Exams were difficult, but fair. To do well in class you must put in time to read and understand material. She does offer extra credit opportunities and cares that you know how science experiments are conducted.
Gwen is a good instructor; respected by her students. However, I feel that she have yet to find the best strategy to run the course. In that way, the class is quite disorganized and students don't know what to focus on for the exams. I felt I have to know everything, the grading was tough. I am always a 4.0 student but this pulled everything down.
She knows a lot, but is clearly inexperienced as a teacher. Her methods leave me struggling, and from the averages and lows I've viewed on the class website, it is clear there is a very small handful of students that have actually done well. She doesn't seem concerned about this at all, no extra credit opportunities. Vague deadlines, unclear tests.
If there is one thing I can tell you - DO NOT TAKE BIO WITH HER! She is new, and copies Jenny McFarland's curriculum to a T, she can't be independent, even as a teacher. Her lectures are crap-She just randomly calls on people to answer her questions, and not to mention the quizzes(pop) and test is absolutely nothing like lecture or the textbook.
If you take this class and want to pass, make sure you have no other responsibilities. She gives you an overwhelming amount of homework and it's difficult to determine which information is best to note for passing quizzes. I would spend an entire day reading, taking 6 pages of notes, and not pass. I stand at a 3.5 cumulative. Poor execution.
Worst class/teacher ever. Very unorganized, refuses to tell what will be on exams. You can not have a life if you take this class. She makes no sense when it comes to grading. Bad bad bad. very low test score average in her class was always curving. Bio major students had a hard time keeping up image nursing students. Never take her class .
if u take her class be ready to fail.
Gwen is a professor that will help troubleshoot to help you understand what you might be missing. If you ask her for help but make sure you are prepared and understand as much as you can she will help you and explain it in a way you understand it. Biology is a hard subject in which you have to study hard but it is worth it.
Put the time and effort into studying it will prepare you to understand biology.
Gwen goes by her own "lecture" slides, and instead of teaching students the actual textbook material. She calls on people to answer the questions in front of the class, even when she hasn't gone over the material/chapter yet. She isn't specific about what's on the exams, and many of us didn't feel prepared. You're better off taking 211 with Miller!
Have to be very honest, take with her IF AND ONLY IF if you intend to be in Bio major. Be prepared to listen to her as some are not covered in the book, so never lose focus and never skip class as well. I know it is too much but, you can get 4.0 if you answer all her study guide questions and read the WHOLE covered chapters.
Professor Shlichta knows a lot about biology and she is bright and happy. Be prepared to class and be able to take good notes.
I have never been good at biology and have never been able to explain what I have learned in a biology class before. But now after taking a class with Gwen I understand what she is talking about and can explain it to others. That is pretty exciting in itself. I recommend this class; the lectures are great and so are the field trips.
Gwen is a great professor, she has so much knowledge and is willing to help if you ask. She spends so much time helping students gain a better understanding of the subject. Field trips were fun and a great learning experience.
Gwen is a professor that I highly dont recommend, but there is no choice any way since shes the only biology professor in EDCC. She literally expects you to reed every single thing on the book over two 30 pages chapters a week at least besides her endless assignments. She turns over half of the grades days before the final shifting grades a lot.
Enormous work load, and if the tests were based on that, it would be fine. Absolutely irrelevant questions that werent discussed in class make over 50% of the test. Besides she always has very ambiguous multiple choice questions.
Biology is a hard subject because there is so much information in a short amount of time, but if you do your work you will do good. Gwen is very helpful and willing to explain things many ways when you go to her office hours to help you understand the topic.
I studied so hard for all her tests and in lecture I thought I was on top of the subject, yet she finds a way to take away points unfairly on the written questions until I finished most of my tests at 70s
She puts almost all the important grades in the last week and even in the last day to shift students grades dramatically.
I loved this class! You can tell that Gwen has worked very hard on the curriculum. The practical were the toughest part because it was under a time limit but we could use our lab notebook. The research project at the end of the quarter was a good experience.
Gwen is a bit disorganized but is a good teacher and really makes an effort to get us outside and learning about the animal world. I really liked the field trips - it was the first time I got to go snowshoeing and we learned a lot about animal tracks. It was my favorite part of the class.
Her tests seem longer than others I have taken. There are written parts, which are hrd for me, but I did better than I thought I did. Lectures are great which I think helped me learn the material.
Dr. Shlichta expects you to come prepared to class: read the text, open to discuss and ready with follow-up questions from the last lecture. This is to ensure you are understanding the material. This is the introductory to biology series and a 200 level class. Do not expect to be hand-held and ask questions.
She has a good sense of humor which makes the content much easier (and more fun) to learn. She's easy to keep up with during lectures and answers any questions that come up. That said, her weekly quizzes were ridiculously difficult. You'll have to put in a lot of time and effort to get an A.
This was the most inspirational class I've taken. I think all topics we covered are the things that we all MUST to know. Regardless of your interest, major, nationality, social class, you will get something from it. Tips for quizzes and exams below are true here, too. She's enthusiastic and friendly so don't worry.
She is really passionate, nice, kind and flexible. Lab exercises might be little confusing, but she will gladly help you to understand. Read textbook for quizzes and Study her lectures for exams, then you'll be fine. + Field trip was really fun!
I really enjoyed her class. her lectures are very interesting and educational. you can tell that she is truly passionate about the subjects she teaches. I got a lot from her class and the field trips. I'm not sure why these other reviewers thought this class was so challenging. Gwen provides more than enough guidence for success.
She is nice, and if you don't miss class, then the course would be easier. lectures are very interesting. Field trip was a great experience. If you actually listen to her and work with the other talented students in the class you can learn alot. I understand some found this a challenging course. I did not.
She is nice and very flexible and I can see her passion about the enviorment thing as well. Labs are well layed out and test prep lectures are clear. Could return grades faster...
She is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the subject. During lectures she would go on tangents and we'd get off track. Her exams are always big picture and don't ask for memorization but more of "do you understand this conceptually?" She is an extremely slow grader. Labs are fairly straight forward. Take notes throughout quarter in lab book.
Gwen is dedicated and devotes lots of her personal time to help the students succeed. Unfortunately there were a few students in class who dis-proportionally capitalized on this time because they just couldnt understand the material like the rest of us. Despite this, what time she could help me paid off.
Amazing at her job and employs a new method of teaching. This class requires work and if you apply yourself and ask for help when its needed (and listen) you will succeed. Gwen gives you all the tools for success if you are open to recognizing them.
She is the sweetest teacher I've ever met, and she actually cares about her students, which is very important. She is extremely helpful and clear with what she wants. If you do all her work it is easy to pass with an A. she also has a very calming voice and leads some of the most interesting classes
Dr. Shlichta was absolutely fantastic. She's hilarious, really cares about the well-being of her students, and makes class enjoyable and fun.
Dr Shlichta is an excellent instructor. Her lectures are very clear and if she senses her students are struggling to understand something she will focus on it more. She's more than willing to help outside of class, not to mention she's hilarious and kind to her students. She made Biology very enjoyable. As long as you show up you will do well
This course has only been going on for a few weeks and I already love it. Its nice to see such passion about Biology. I hope its like this during the whole course.
The tests are not easy; you need to pay attention in lectures and review all of the material thoroughly before the exams. That being said, most of the test questions come from lectures, there aren't random things from the book in there, so as long as you study, you should be fine. Gwen is super accessible in office hours too if you ever need help.
Friendly, knows what she's talking about. Minimal assignments and fairly easy learning content. However she rarely answers emails or texts, which is very frustrating. Often doesn't post where our field trip is until the day before, or not at all.
Be prepared to study. I love this class because its a challenge and Dr. Gwen is available after class to help me. Exams are easy as long as you study. Some haters just want an easy A....
Dr Shlichta is a phenomenal teacher sets clear expectations, assigns relevant readings, makes good use of class time, communicates ideas very clearly, grades fairly, and inspires curiosity.
It's clear that Gwen loves marine biology, it shows in her lesson plans. She tries to make the subject matter entertaining, but her biggest shortcoming is lack of communication and poor field trip planning. The online discussions and hw are easy enough, but she didn't return any grades until late in the quarter. :/
Her field trips are great and well planned. She often brings us snacks and goes out of her way to provide clear guidelines on how to engage in the trip. I've never had professor been so accommodating as to bring food and extra clothes.
Dr Shlichta runs a real "hands-on" course. We have a number of field trips at local parks or state parks. Dr Shlichta drives us to the site and brings us snacks to make sure we are well taken care of. Not since pre-school have I had this level of care.
Great online material with equally great field trip. I have never had a problem finding the sites-just Google Map them.... Everytime I've had a a question, Dr. Shlichta has made herself available. Just dont wait till the last moment like I did one time. She is very busy and couldnt get back to me at 5am.
The class is really difficult and you definitley can't skip the readings if you want a good grade. Make sure you actually read the material before class so you know what the heck is going on in lecture. Gwen is great in lectures even though sometimes she moves through the slides a little fast so make sure you don't only take notes during classtime
The class was structured with clear direction, and Gwen made herself very accessible outside of class for additional help. The tests are definitley difficult but I find that going to the group review sessions to ask questions helps me with studying. Reading the textbook is essential for this class and I found myself lost if i skipped the reading.
Dr Gwen is a genuinely kind person. Lectures are engaging and interesting, and Dr Gwen gives ample opportunities to ask questions. She is very conscious of what topics cause the most confusion, and relates to students well. Being prepared for class by doing the reading is important for success in this class.
If you are biology major, take BIO211,212,213 with Gwen. She will prepare you for success. Her class might be heavy with all the quizzes, projects and assignments but if you put effort, it will benefit you in the long run. Getting an A in her class is hard but as long as you show up for class and pay attention, a B is pretty easy.
I really enjoyed this class. Every Friday, we go on field trips and Dr. Gwen makes sure that our time doesn't feel wasted. Every field trip was engaging and fun. Quizzes are really easy, usually 8 questions (timed) and you only get 2 attempts. This class felt like an online class since all the material was on Canvas, so don't buy the textbook.
Genuinely cares about your learning. Gives opportunity in class to discuss questions before being called on, every time. Asks how she can teach to help you best. Engaging lectures. Has group quizzes. Allows partial credit on multiple choice section of exams. Fascinating to talk to. Has lab quizzes with notes allowed. Drops lowest quiz grades. Great
You can tell that Gwen genuinely cares about teaching biology. She is very accessible, flexible, and organized, and relates to her student's frustrations in a way that makes understanding the material easier. Be prepared for lots of studying & reading. This class is not structured for you to get an easy A, but to learn difficult & fun subjects.
Dr. Gwen is super nice and caring, you just need to get in touch with her if youre having any questions because she has so many students and it would be best of your interest to figure things out actively! Every of the biology series will have a group research project and remember to keep asking her questions! She is happy to share her knowledge.
Canvas is a mess. Due dates listed often have nothing to do with the actual due date. Quizzes focus on ultra specific details rather than general concepts. I am not sure why I as an ecology student need to have the exact details of the risks faced by penguins, or the causes of a specific population boom of mosquitoes in texas.
PNW ecology was a class I enjoyed. During pandemic our lab portion was going on two hour fieldtrips close to campus. 1 couple questions quiz a week. Easy, fun discussions. She really knows her stuff . I would take her again.
This class took work. Not an easy A. Gwen expects her students to learn biology at a high level. After this class I felt more prepared for university and higher level classes. If you are a passionate student, her class is what school is supposed to feel like. Hard work and hard rewards. She uses research to back her teaching decisions. Nice person
She takes a while to reply to your texts, and it can be a downside if you need an answer right away. The field trips were super fun! It was great to get outside and see cool scenery. Everybody wore masks and it was safe. There is a lot of reading in the book, and you had to do a "project" for the plants and animal tracks you saw (on the final!!)
Dr. Gwen is possibly the best teacher I've ever taken a class with ever. If you miss a quiz, she'll give you a nudge and open it for an extra day for you. If you don't understand something, she will explain it more in depth. She's committed to her office hours and her students. She's also hilarious which is just another bonus.
Dr. Gwen is the most dedicated and passionate professor at EC. It is a hard class and she makes you work for the grade. However, she goes above and beyond to provide you with plentiful resources to be successful in the class as well as lots of leniency on due dates except exams/papers. Only two exams and a research paper with weekly quizzes.
Ruined all my passion for Biology.
Dr Gwen is extremely knowledgable and friendly and enjoys teaching class about what she knows. However, her canvas set up is extremely unorganized and stressful and is behind on grading on a lot of assignments. I understand the pandemic has changed many things so I'd be curious what an actually in person class would be like.
Gwen was such an incredible teacher! I thought I was going to hate this class but she made me bloom with a love for plants. :) She is still one of my favorite science teachers. Be ready for lots of group projects. She does a review the night before the exam. 4 question essay exams, most of which are from the students on the review session. Attend!
Amazing professor, very helpful and invests in her students! She wants to see students succeed but she also doesn't hand them an easy A. If you have the chance to take a class from her do it!
If you have a chance to take this class take it! As long as she can see that you are making an honest effort in the class she will help you! She gives 2 exams but has review sessions before each of them, plus a research group project thats a good chunk of your grade. Try to not be late or skip classes, she might give you more readings.
Wants students to learn but expects too much. Makes you work VERY hard for your grade. Will often post the assignments/readings THE NIGHT BEFORE lecture,& still expects ppl to answer questions about it the next day. Research project paper& presentation are difficult. Has prereleased exams w/ withheld parts but withheld parts are difficult.
Gwen's class is awesome. There's a lot of online reading/video watching that you do, but the fun stuff is in the field trips (which you will want to reserve 3-4 hours for every week). I learned so much and I highly recommend this class for anyone who likes biology or even just being outside, plus it fulfills a lab credit.
Worst EVERRRR
Dr. Gwen is an incredible professor who solidified my decision to become a biologist. Though she can give some "tough love" at times, she gives excellent feedback and truly tries to help you if you ask for help. She encourages a real-world applied style of teaching which is way more interesting than just learning through textbooks and lectures.
The most professor-like professor in EdCC. She gives opportunity to be a professional researcher, especially in study design and research paper analysis. She has a heavy background in entomology and ecology, so if you want to study animal or molecular biology in depth, other professors could be a good choice. Test hard, but there are extra credits.
this Teacher was terrible at communicating, she didn't grade one of my entire notebooks and her excuse was "your notebook is too un-organized" which is false.
The teacher's broken promise hurt my grades & effort. Offered to submit notebooks later, then graded one as zero, telling me I turned it in too late, which dropped me to 59%. Unfair & demoralizing. This class lost all my motivation to do biology.
Gwen is a really nice professor, she is knowledgeable and passionate about biology. Her class requires effort and time, but she is flexible and a reasonable grader!!
Very strict about field trip attendance, fairly reasonable grader and can be kind at times but rude as well. HORRIBLE at communication, late responses or no response. Said to complete 5/10 discussions, received 0/10 for 5/10. Said she'd reopen discussions and grade extra credit, never responded to my emails after finals week, grade suffered.
Very knowledgeable and inspirational too!
I took this professor because I was fooled by the 4 and 5 ratings. We were behind in schedule all quarter, the quizzes that she used to assess us were more about applying the learning to scenarios than ensuring we knew the actual concepts, and the midterms were graded wayyy to harshly given that she barely teaches. Her lecture vids were of no help.
She's a great professor and made me love biology! She grades very fairly and accepts some late work. The end of year project was challenging, but we got a lot of feedback and it was great experience overall. Definitely take a class with her lectures, unless you are good at getting info from textbooks.
Such a nice lady but SO MANY QUIZZES AND RESEARCH PAPERS. Her pre realized exams are helpful except the withheld information is so hard sometimes. She's a pretty strict grader as well.
Don't just!!!!!!!!!!!, I've never get less than a 4.0 but in her class I got 3.7
Extremely tough grader, I have worked harder in this class than any other class in my life and still got a terrible grade. She makes biology so unnecessarly harder
Dr. Gwen's class can be tedious. I had a quiz just about every day I had her class but the quizzes weren't that hard. She puts a lot of emphasis into learning how to read research papers and as long as you use the tricks she teaches you, you will be fine. I enjoyed Dr. Gwen's lectures as she is engaging. The research project was enjoyable.
