I would definitely not recommend this teacher although I got an A--bad class
Such an easy A, but the class is miserable to sit through
No Comments
she rambles about nothing and makes no point. avoid!
She is very unclear in what she wants on her assignments and is very unhelpful
All lecture-no class discussion. She asks ?s but she doesnt want u to answer
No Comments
do not take this freak! she doesn't make any sense in class, and lord knows she needs to retire. she makes it unclear on the assignment and then when questions are asked she will not answer them.
O kay.
Well, Hood is both good and bad. For class we did all of our work online, which was nice, but sitting through her class is rough. To make matters worse, we only focused on one book for the entire semester. Very tedious.
She is very unclear, and her class is misserable to sit through. She needs to lighten up a little.
one word will sum this up...BORING!!!
Read 1 book in 3 days & have 8 to read in a semester... (ok, so I didn't read ANY! But I got an A.) Can't decide which I like best: taking this class or getting my wisdom teeth pulled WITHOUT some sort of pain relief! VERY VERY VERY BORING!
Opinions are wrong and reflect in writing assignment grades.
The worst class I have had in college. I thought I was goimg to die before the class was through everday. Very, very, very boring.
Dr. Hood is so boring. She is a very difficult, even for an English professor. Your papers must be absolutely perfect to receive an A.
sooooo sooooo boring. the only class i fall asleep in. she makes no sense at all! if you take this class, take a coloring book and crayons with you so that you have something to keep you awake.

Very condescending, rude to students. When giving your opinion in class it will either be completely wrong or she will ignore it. Lectures are incomprehensible due to speaking style, which consists of drawing everything out, mmmhmmm. BORING! evil eye.
I think most of what people are saying is a little harsh. Most English classes at Marshall are boring, but they are teaching ther only way they know how. I think people need to give her a break and pay attention and maybe they would pass the class!!!
BORING!
I would rather watch paint dry...incredibly hard to understand do to her way of speaking and never allowed for the possibility that someone else's opinion might be valid...ooooookay
I can't stand her. She is rude. She doesn't seem to care about students at all. Her opinions are the only right ones. Her assignments aren't too hard, but she loads them on you all at once. She is very hard to approach.
Worst teacher I've ever had in my life. Marshall would be a better place if she was in a home.
oh my. drop out of college before you take this woman. mmmkkayyy that is all i ever heard. she is horrible, rude and never consistant with the way she grades. take my advice, stay as far away from this woman as you can!!!
I'm reading these comments, & the words that come IMMEDIATELY to mind are what a bunch of lazy whining little punks. Dr. Hood is EASY to understand--IF you are paying attention. She is VERY approchable IF you take the time to ask. Grow up, whiners!
This is the worst teacher in the world. Hates students, is rude and makes no attempt to help. If challenged, she takes it out on the students.
I have not found it hard to make an A on the papers, but I have found that class discussion is hard to follow. Your opinion means nothing. It is like being on the Weakest Link? How wrong do you want to be is more the question than how right.
Forget everything you have ENG 101, because in her 102 class, IT IS WRONG! Needs to wash her hair and not wear stretch pants. You can never tell if she is looking at you when she is talking to you or not. Obsessed with Orwell and 1984.
This woman is the absolute worst! The classwork itself is quite simple, but she (as a teacher, individual, wildebeest etc...) sucks. She's obsessed with Orwell and does nothing to explain why. She needs a life, makeover, bath...something.
Come on people lets be fair. Dr. Hood may have an unusual personality, but she does help her students learn and pass her class. You simply need to take the time to get with her about problems you may be having. Also, if you have the need to mock a perso
By the way, for the person that called everyone a bunch of whiners, apperently you didn't take prof. Hood's class. She is the most unhelpful, despiteful prof. in the University. She is very opinionated and acts as if any question you have is a stupid one.
If I may say, Dr. Hood, while attempting to teach, does no more than force what were once "happy college kids" into learning a foreign language in ENGLISH class. Old English sucks, and so does Chaucer. I am no longer happy.
The class was tough, but Dr. Hood clearly knew what she was talking about. I had to work my butt off to get an A, but that's what college is about, and Dr. Hood brought great writing out of me that I never knew was there.
Dr. Hood was not only a horrible professor, but could not explain herself worth beans. If you must take 102, which everyone does, take Dr. Ford, cause she is easy and very awesome, and if you get stuck with Hood, be sure to know about TECHNICAL PLAGERISM!
i got an A, but it really pained me to sit through class. very monotonous...no personality
terrible...do not take if at all possible
i dont know how she became an english professor because communication is not her best skill. i think she lives in a cave and only comes out for class. monotonous, boring. bring a gun and kill yourself. she might not notice and at best be speechless.
Concentrate on the papers.
I have had many bad teachers, but Dr. Hood has to be the worst teacher on the face of the earth. She is not helpful, she has no commmunication skills with her students, she has no personality, she has no care for student needs. DO NOT TAKE!
Dr Hood maybe kind of boring but she is into what she teaches and aslong as you put forth a good effort you will pass the class..just don't diss Tolkien
I got an A, but sitting through her class is torture!!! I hated every minute of that boring class. Take her class if you wish to be bored to death.
No pleasing this one, grades unfairly, very boring, rude to students, and talks down to you. If you take this class, make sure there is nothing else availible, she is that BAD. Even when other teachers say your papers are great she gives very low grades,,
Worst prof I have ever had. She will not work with you if you have any problems. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!
She is different but not difficult. She is a good instructor and knows the subject well. She scores an A+ in my book.
Monotonous. Arrogant. Uses $50 words to put in her 2 cents worth. Too intellectual for the average student. Got an A, but don't know how.
I really enjoyed Dr. Hood's Class. This is the second time that I've had her as a professor and I plan on taking her class again. She is not unfair or difficult in her grading style. If you want to be a writer, or study Literature, she'll help you!!
I've hard some hard teachers but this woman is HORRIBLE!!! She refuses to look anyone in the eye. Acts like she's explaining stuff but in the end you have no clue what she said and her class was way to hard for a 102
She is very hard. I'm generally an A student, but find the class very difficult. Very intelligent, but she grades students as if they were actually majoring in English. Goodluck getting an A.
Do not take Dr. Hood. She does not help her students and you can't please her.
She just keeps talking and talking until you fall asleep. She grades unfairly. I got an A+ in my last Eng. class. She doesn't believe in wearing a bra. She talks down to her students and is very rude. She doesn't clarify mistakes on your papers.
She is unfair, rude, and she will talk down on you like your nothing. Her class is so hard even another ENG teacher wouldn't pass it. I warn you do not take her class. If so you will be in for a long semster.

She isn't very helpful and when I did ask for help I was usually more confused after I had asked. She is condescending and enforces this by using pseudo-intellectual words to make simple points. Her assignmets are also very unclear.
If you dont want to pass...she's your girl
No Comments
She is crazy. Always wanted you to express her opinions. If you actually spoke your own mind she would start raising her voice with you and telling you that you are wrong. I thought the class would be interesting, but she is a very bad professor.
Refuses to look anyone in the eye because it is impossible for her. She and Dr. Stooke would be the pefect couple. Equally confused and equally careless about students. Teaches a completely different system of writing than any other ENG prof. A waste of time and money for books and tuition costs.
It is the worst class that I have had. She is so hard and her assignments are not clear. She puts on a front that she is intelligent and knows what she is talking about but she does not. DO NOT take her. We have papers due all the time and she tells you their good and gives you a C shes bad!
What can I say about Dr. Hood? I'm a writing English major and even I have trouble figuring out what she wants on papers -- if it's not focused enough, it's scattered. If it's too focused, it's redundant. Nice person, but very hard to please.
Dr. Hood is an excellent teacher for those who want to become something in regard to literature or writing, she's know a lot about both. she is a little hard to approach and does expect a decent amount of work, but this is college. Take her if you want to be a writer or love the books in class.
Awful Professor, avoid her if you can. If I had known about her when I registered it would of saved me a lot of annoyance.
Her assignments aren't hard but you cant always tell what she wants you to do. If you write about an opinion try to make it hers. Back up what you say with citations or she will say you are factually wrong. Insite sucks and shows a grade much higher than what you will get in class. Shes kinda crazy.
I did not like this teacher, half the time I didn't know if she was asking me a question or the kid beside me. Avoid if possible.
This woman makes you work! But if she senses that you really want to do well in her class, she is helpful. I gotta a freakin A in this class! Of course, I'm also an old woman. I think you do better the older you get.
Her classes are easy, but she is not a very nice person. Assert your opinion, and you WILL be shot down.
Doesn't need to be Dr.
This teacher was the worst I had the whole time I was in college. She failed me and a few others in the class because she didn't like our topics on our papers. We went to the dean on her and she is still teaching, shows how much they care.
Hard as hell and not nice!
Godawful! I'm absolutely POSITIVE she's a smart lady, but I think she missed out on the whole socialization process somewhere and as a result is completely unclear and unpersonable. That said, I got an "A", but I'm a BS natural. Many of my classmates had a very hard time in that class.
Dr. Hood was my thesis advisor during my time as a TA in the English department. She was wonderfully helpful to me and taught me a lot during my thesis process. I can safely safe without her I would have never had the courage to go on to a doctoral program.
She sucks. She makes you read boring books that no one understands. She is just an awful teacher. I wouldnt recomend this teacher to anyone because she is bound to mess up your GPA. he's an idiot. Dont take this class!!!!!!!
Inconceivable!
She is okay if you do your assignments (A student); Out of touch with reality, but teaching curriculum is good; not much personality, but seems to try and help students; very hard to listen to 'cause when talking she never pauses to end a sentence--runs on and on jumping from idea to idea in no apparent pattern; must read written instructions
The worst! She thinks she's living in midieval renaissance times. Snooty! Very confusing! Boring!Could use a good make-over! I would'nt recommend her to anyone!
DO every assignment and extra credit homework if you want a chance. Read everything assigned and take your time and put forth lots of effort on your essay's. A tip, submit your essay's to the writting center for extra help proof reading before turning them in. If you go to her she is nice and she will try ot help.
She can be hard to understand and you have to listen carefully in class to understand what she wants on assignments. That being said, she is fair to her students and expects college level work. If you can handle this, you will be fine... if you are looking for a free A... you won't find it here. Be prepared to write well and express yourself wel

she is terrible
Dr. Hood is well versed in her material and has great passion for the subject matter. She is willing to help you, you only need to ask. She may appear to be a bit quirky, but she is very kind and very smart.
You will regret taking the class.
The most boring class I've ever had. She is hard to understand because she doesn't take breath when she is talking. She is smart, or she's good at pretending like it. Just do your essays and your work and you'll be fine. Most of the class is online as well. Make sure you read.
Worst class ever at Marshall. She failed me because she didn't like the topic for my paper and told me if I didn't change it, a week before it was due, she would fail me. AND she did. Myself and 6 others went to the dean and still....6 years later she is still teaching. Shows how much people pay attention.
This teacher is awful. I love english and wished that this teacher showed some form of achieved degree. I have a hard time believing that she recieved a teaching certificate. Do not take this class. It is useless.
Really nice, but really wierd. When I think of her I think ofDean Martin bags and of dungeons and dragons.
If you do what is required with minimal effort you will get a B. If you achieve some form of proficiency and make an effort in the class you will receive an A. Her classes allow you to focus on great stories from one of several time periods. Although I'll admit that she seems to be from another planet sometimes. But she's cool.
Dr. Hood expects her students to be adults. If you're not - then don't take this class - it's not high school. This is a very talented and very patient woman with more too offer than Marshall can afford. I'm not sure how they did!
Her lectures are long, boring, impersonal, and irrelevant
Interesting professor. She lectures on the reading, which has nothing to do with assignments. The in-class discussions were usually very enjoyable. She helped students with assignments whenever they asked for it. The essays could be strange but were not terribly hard. Just put forth some effort into the class, and you will be fine.
If you are a freshman, take this class. ENG 201H with Dr. Hood counts for both 101 AND 102, and is easier than both of those classes. I will warn you in advance, this teacher is weird, boring, and lectures constantly. But, she gives out alot of As.
She knows the subject of fantasy literature very well. She reads prompts, small responses to the readings, before class and uses them to encourage the discussion. She talks at great length about the books storylines at times. She gives point opportunities in participation, papers and prompts.Missing readings on occasion will not hurt your grade.ENG 309
Very picky. Hard to satisfy
Does not explain assignments well, gives lectures that have little to do with the assignment, does not like it if you have differing opinions, and does not seem to care about her students. She failed several papers just because she did not like the topic! WHY IS SHE STILL TEACHING?
Prof Hood is very knowledgeable on the topics she instructs. She is unapproachable and often condescending when she doesn?t agree with students. She goes off on tangents which make the lectures hard to follow. It matters little in education the knowledge that you have acquired if you can?t impart that knowledge to your students.
This class could be taught online. You will write papers, but this class will not help your writing skills. It WILL turn into a discussion of real life science fiction "possibilities," by people who think the martians have landed! As another student put it, while all science fiction is based on science. You have to remember it is still IS fiction...
I don't understand why so many people complain about Dr. Hood. She's brilliant, and she puts a lot of effort into her classes. She's demanding, but you should expect nothing less if you're in college -- especially if you're an English major. Thanks to her, I have a new possible focus for graduate school, and I now understand (and love!) Chaucer.
Class should be taught online. Lecture is a useless summary of what you just read. Incredibly impersonal and encourages no class discussion. Won't look you in the eye and won't bother to learn your name. Anyone who attempts to answer a rare question gets spoken to like they're stupid. A PhD in English does not always mean you should teach.
What the heck is all this hating about?! Dr H is incredibly awkward, which might mistaken for being rude, but she isn't. Much easier to communicate / her via email. Will do anything to help you get a good grade. Very funny (but dry) in lectures. Could have been easy A if I didn't forget online prompts so much. Take her!
Dr. Hood is my favorite English teacher! Her class really helped to rekindle my love for English literature and greatly improved my writing skills! She is always available to help when needed and offers great feedback on papers and journals, as well as thought provoking comments. She is extremely kind and understanding. I strongly recommend her!!
Unless you have a lot of free time, do not take this class. My previous writing intensive course did not have nearly as many assignments, making it hard to find time to do assignments for my actual major. Takes up way too much time.
Ridiculous amount of homework assignments for such little points. Really tries to load you down with readings toward the end of the semester. Not a terrible professor but I've had better.
I took Dr. Hoods online Lit of Fantasy class (ENG 209). It was very well-laid out and the assignments were easy to follow along with. Every week we read different sections of a book followed by a discussion, a short paragraph, and an essay (2-3 pages). There were a couple bigger analysis papers (5-7 pages) but nothing too bad.
I'm a science major, but as an ex-English major, I found this course enjoyable. There were many short and medium-length prompts and discussions, plus 3-4 longer formal essays. The course was well-organized. The instructor was responsive and helpful. Dr. Hood is a true university professor and she does not baby her students. I loved this course.
Boring lectures
Took this online class, and it was so boring. The books chosen to read were awful, and honestly, there was too much work for such little interest in readings.
The amount of assignments/tasks to complete has been RIDICULOUS. She has things assigned for every day of the week and sometimes even Saturdays--are we in high school? Comments on papers not helpful. Expects hundreds of pages of reading, 4+ discussion posts, a journal, a prompt, two virtual classes a WEEK plus multiple essays. I regret taking her.
The coursework was normal for a 400 level English class. I was nervous coming into it because Im not a fan of Shakespeare, but Dr. Hood made it an easy to follow class. She is very quick about responding to emails, and is never hesitant to answer questions. I really enjoyed this class, and its the only one I actually learned from this semester.
Feedback offers no help at all. Directions unclear but expects you to be a mind reader. So many assignments throughout the week. 5 discussion posts per week, a prompt, essays, etc... It's like she doesn't care you have other classes. I will say she is very nice and understanding and will most likely let you make up something if you misunderstood.
This course had a RIDICULOUS amount of work. Not only that, but she is an extremely tough grader. I had to take this class for a British Lit credit, but if you do not need the class, DO NOT take her.
Telling you now, DO NOT TAKE HER!! I have literally taken 450+ classes and it was less work. Very unhelpful/ridiculously hard grader. Essays are my thing and she refuses to give A's. In general gives the vibe that she doesn't care about you-returned one of my assignments with my name spelled wrong in the middle of October. Don't do it!
Dr. Hood's instructions are VERY unclear and she does not care if you understand or not. This class is an entry level course that is a requirement, so many of the students in this course are not English majors. Be ready to write an essay every week if you have this class. Would not recommend.
Whatever you do avoid at all costs. I took her 200level course to fulfill my Women's Studies credit, and the work that she expects you to complete each week is nothing compared to what a 200level course should be. She expects you to read 400+ page books before the semester even starts, and continues this weekly and she will NEVER give full points
For the sake of your sanity, avoid her if you can. The way she lays out the material is EXTREMELY confusing. I think it makes sense in her mind, but she doesn't do a good job at translating it to text. And don't think you'll get anywhere by asking her directly; she is quite rude and does a very poor job at answering questions. Would not recommend.
This is not an easy class but if you put in the work, you will learn a ton. Dr. Hood is very organized and gives excellent feedback. If you are more concerned about learning than getting an easy grade, you will love this class.
