She is very enthusiastic about what she teaches. Makes learning fun
I loved her enthusiasm. She is a great teacher.
distractingly
great person, but structure of class is undefined and unorganized

Great teacher - easy class
Explains things very well. i now understand the bible!
very nice, also very knowledgable in hist., she will give you extra time if u ar
Great views on European Humanities. Paid attention/medium effort/ got a B.
She maybe one of the smartest people I've ever met. Vast knowledge and very nice and helpful. Recommended.
Outstanding person and wonderful professor. Extensive base of knowledge. I simply cannot comprehend why she opts to teach at a JC, though I thank her for the chance! DO NOT be late to her class!
She is interesting/fun. You do have to read and write a few papers, but overall natural level of difficulty (brain doesn't hurt after class).
She has an amazing personality and a great teaching style that makes almost any topic intersting. She is extremely open to new ideas and opinions, something we need in instructors today.
I got an A, and I didn't even read the books. Don't be like me though. This is a great teacher. She is as entertaining as she is intelligent. I am taking more HUM classes b/c of her.
She's twistedly hilarious...she cracked me up. Knows her material, and showed it very well. Medium effort, got a B. Probably an easy A (well not too easy). Know the general idea of the reading material and you're good.
Gwenyth is an absolutely amazing instructor. She is extremely intelligent, knows her material and extremely passionate about what she does. Her reading material is very interesting. She is incredibly funny.
Easy, easy, easy. She assigns a lot of reading, but she will go over it all in class. You can get an EASY B in the class, and with little effort you can get an A. Although the class it EASY you will learn a lot Greek, Hebrew, and Roman culture
This woman is so passionate about her subject, its absolutly infectious. she gets so into the stories you cant help bu be excited to learn. i truely enjoyable class experience.
This teacher is amazing, she is so into what she does. Knows everything about humanities. Brilliant woman. I would recommend this teacher to anyone. Very helpful and pretty easy, but out of the class you will learn so much.
She is a fasinating teacher that is extremely smart and witty and the same time. She assigns more reading than writing assignments but the texts are amazing!
Excellent teacher as well as a great friend or mentor. You'd be harming yourself by NOT taking one of her classes. She can make anything interesting.
Gwenyth goes over all the material you were suppose to read, which is great. She is passionate about what she does and she has stolen my heart with her brilliance.
I seriously hate reading books... but Mapes made me FALL IN LOVE with all the readings for Hum110. She is so enthusiastic and her passion for the material rubs off on you. I dislike school, but I am seriously considering taking Hum120 just because of her
Mapes is a great! If you're extremly religious be cautious, her teaching of the bible may offend you or make you question some things, but I think you'll benefit regardless. Very passionate about her subject, really helpful, the class is amazing.
really knows subject well, interersting texts
Grossmont's finest. Interesting class, lots of reading but you adjust. Fair grader, a must take to fullfill Gen Ed courses.
She was awesome!!! Very passionate about her work!! The class was always a joy!! There is a lot of reading, but the texts are so interesting and she makes class even better!!!
Not only is she an awesome humanities instuctor, she will prepare you for the college atmosphere.
Please, take her class and you will see a huge defference between other Grossmont teachers and her. Gwenyth is absolutely unique, smart, kind, and helpful instructor!!!!!
great professor, wonderful person. intelligent, caring, witty and interesting. just do the assignments on time, go to class, try to do the community service she suggests and you’ll come out of the class being a better person.
Ms. Mapes is the best teacher I have ever had. She loves what she does and it shows. She is amazing! You will learn so much from her. Take her class if you can.
all i have to say, is that she's the best teacher ive had. her teaching style is very straight-forward, engages any type of student, & she does a great job of giving in-depth information about the readings--seriously, she does a REALLY REALLY good job.
GREAT TEACHER! i loved the class but she made it more interesting. she has interesting material to teach! i loved her! to suceed: DO THE WORK AND YOU WILL GET AN A
Great teacher, very straight forward. I learned alot and had a good experience.
I am taking her summer class and it is so so so so awsome!!!! I am planning on taking HUM 130 next semester!!! She is so funny and makes the most boring book so so interesting. Her class is awsome!!!!! You will not regret taking her class!
I loved this class! Mapes is so passionate about her courses, which is why her classess are great. She hands out alot of handouts, skim through them it'll help you out with your papers.
Great, fun teacher! Lots of reading! Many quizzes w/out notice, so read! Take good notes, you will need them. If not, record lectures, or use laptop. Final has an essay=75% of final grade. Also, looks for critical thinkers & improvement on all writing.
My favorite teacher of all times! She is so real and up front. Very funny, but most of all she makes everything she talks about so interesting! So naturally you should do very well without going above and beyond to do well.
She is def, one of the best teachers i've ever had. She was awesome she loves what she does. i would recommed eveyone to take her she's def something else.
She loves what she does, and loves her subject. She goes into more depth than any other humanities teacher I've known has gone. I learned more than I could have ever imagined. She doesn't give tests, just do essays, but it's not hard to do well.
She is an absolutely excellent teacher. I would suggest that everyone take at least one of her classes.
very hard, unclear but with a great personality
Gwenyth is a great teacher! She has a passion for her subject and knows it inside and out. Everyone should take her class! It's not an easy class, but if you read the material and have pretty good writing skills, you can get a good grade. Uses primary sources instead of a textbook.
Do not be late to class! She hates that so she likes to point you out if you're late, unprepared, or falling asleep. She's strict but nonetheless a very good teacher. She makes the lectures interesting. Just do your work and definitely read before class and you'll do fine.
Good with lectures. You get a lot out of them. Pretty much an easy class you just have to read and do a few essays and thats about it. She is very discriptive. Good teacher.
I don't know if she is going through some tough times or something, but Mapes was very sharp with us. She is unclear about what she expects. We had to regurgitate only her ideas, any of our own original ideas she shot down. She is very passionate about her work, but she should have a nicer attitude!
Mapes is a tough grader, she's unclear with her assignments, and has a bad attitude. I did not like her as my professor.
Wonderful books and films for entire class. All take home essay assignments, no tests. Very passionate and hip teacher. Has traveled the world and knows a lot about what she is teaching. I recommend this class to anyone who enjoys learning about the arts and culture of other countries.
do not be late! she hates that.ALOT of reading.READ before class, review your notes and participate in discussions, she'll love you.if you dont she can tell you didnt read.VERY FUNNY.passionate about what she does.clarifys alot of the confusing parts of the readings.dont forget, READ!
This chick has issues. Serious ones. She hates the class, but don't worry about not reading cause she will always basically do a book report on all the literature you're given. Don't try to come up with any ideas of your own, just repeat what she said in class in your essays and you'll get an A
Something's wrong with her. Almost always angry. Treats the class like middle school kids. Very vague with assignments and then extremely harsh when grading. Very sarcastic. If you don't agree with her on everything then you'll probably fail. You never really learn what humanities even is. Stay away
tough grade and very unclear with assignments
I am so bitter. I rated this teacher before I took the class and she had a high rating. I agree with the last few posts. She does not care about you actually thinking for yourself, all she wants is for you to regurgitate everything she says. She's particularly harsh to Christians. DO NOT TAKE!
Great teacher if you want help go to her office hours, she will proof read your paper! Very passionate about what she does, unlike most teachers
this lady is ****, and never stops talking. I spoke with her about missing classes and she said it was ok. Then she counted the absences against me. Do not take this class with her, trust me
She is Angry so stay out of her way/classroom!
Very interesting subjects. She'll scare you on the first day, overly expressive, seems kinda evil! Do not show up a second late or forget your txt, she'll hold it against you the rest of the class. You'll think it's going well, turning all of the papers in, doing reading, then you'll get a "C".

She was a spectacular teacher, her class is plenty interesting. She really likes what she does and is really helpful. Zealots tend to hate her, because she questions their one-track mentality. Take her if you're not obsessed with yourself, and aren't completely obsessed with Jesus. Two thumbs up.
She needs to stop drooling over characters from her stories!
This professor is top notch, first-rate. She brings life into the texts she uses, is excited and intensely engaged in every subject she addresses. Encouraging to all students, helful, inspiring. Want an education? This class is a must! Ignore negative reviews! They're totally without merit.
She was a good teacher, she grades her papers hard, they are easy to write and if you do well you will get a "c." Shes really interested in what shes teaching, and if you care about the material even just a little bit you'll probably be interested in the class.
This is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Ms. Mapes really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. If you do the work you'll do fine in her class. If you are lazy then you won't appreciate what she has to offer. Very knowledgeable about topic-makes something boring very interesting
Great teacher. So nice, and really cares about her students. Totally awesome class.
Outstanding teacher, very into her teachings. Keeps you interested. You do not want to miss a class. Don't forget your book or be late. She really enjoys what she is teaching.
She is just the greatest teacher on campus...period. not the easiest. but, she loves her classes and her students...unlike the many prehistoric burnouts that inhabit many a podium around here.

I love Gwyneth, she's the best. She will probably give me a low grade but I still love her. Awesome teacher! One of a kind.
EXCELLENT IN HER MANNER OF TEACHING AND BEING WILLING TO ASSIST WHEN ASKED. SHE IS THE BEST SO FAR IN MY EDUCATION. HER CLASS IS VERY HARD FOR ME, BUT WHETHER "I GET IT OR NOT" GWENYTH IS STILL MY FAVOURITE. MORE SHOULD LEARN HOW TO TEACH FROM HER. THANX GWENYTH, STUDENT FROM SPRING 2005 SEMESTER.ENJOY YOUR COLOMBIAN BAG :-)
She is so sweet and passionate about what she does. Being in her class is like going to storytime. she makes everything come to life. She is a great teacher.
Gwenyth is the bst. She loves her work and her students. Her tests can be hard, but you have to read ALL of her material. Take GOOD NOTES. Be cognizant the ENTIRE time she lectures - or you WILL GET LOST. If you are absent for lecture - you may not find your way back. Other students notes do not help in this class - YOU have to hear for yourself.
Very passionate about her work and also has a great outlook on life. Easy to get an A, just go and listen and you will do fine. Don't miss too many classes because it could bite u in the a$$.
great teacher, great class
passionate, but very difficult. i got an a, but it was not easy. PAY ATTENTION or you will be lost. SHE is one of those teachers who you despise during the semester, but really feel good about yourself when its all through. I have learned so much out this class, stuff like jeopardy questions.
Ms Mapes is very passionate. Her class requires participation. If you read, pay attention in class, take notes, and open your mind you will do very well. I will for sure take more of her classes, I am an enlightened person because of her!
Do yourself a favor and take any class she teaches.
Such an amazing teacher! She is very enthusiastic, and just comes out with this stuff that is so interesting that you can't help but do good in the class. This woman literally showed me that school can actually be enjoyable, something I had never ever thought possible before her class.

I cannot add more, eveyone had said it right.
The best teacher I've EVER had in two years at grossmont. She's a wonderful teacher and person all around; she's also my idol. Just go to class and listen. It's interesting anyway.
Awesome teacher! As everyone's already said, she's really passionate about her subject. She's really nice and is great to talk to. The class was a little difficult, but as long as you do all of the assignments you should be okay.
i took her for two humanities classes and she is by far the best teacher i've had throughout my academic life--she's very passionate about teaching and has the greatest knowledge for the subject. and regarding the very first comment posted, only a nut head would think she is a feminist. and any one who thinks such a thing would aparently be treated like a nut head.
I learned so much in this class. She is very passionate about what she teaches and it is absolutely refreshing to see a teacher who enjoys what they do, and obviously understands the significance of teaching young minds new things. I am so appreciative, that she helped me find a new appreciation and perspective on literature and the history and roles of men and women. My favorite teacher so far.
i love gwen, she was the first teacher of my college career, i got a B and i didnt even buy the books...if u write good papers youll get a good grade
She is one of the two best teachers at Grossmont I had. Her classes were not only interesting, but they were inspiring. Take any class you can from her. I would have loved to take all her classes. I can't write enough about her.
Well-educated in her area of expertise, and personally engaging when not lecturing. I like her. I learned much from her class. However she teaches 'at' you, rather than exploring the material with you. It's her way or the highway. She says she doesn't want mere regurgitation, but that's the only thing she rewards. Material made harder than need be.
Mapes is extremely biased in her viewpoints but once you look past that, she does a good job teaching her class. Keep an open mind but be very wary of the information you're being fed. Always remember that there is another side and, in this case, you definately arn't getting the whole picture.
Mapes is a great teacher. She is so passionate about humanities, and she helped me decide by taking her classes that I wanted my major to be humanities. She taught me so much about the world, and I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend her to anyone who wants to take this course!
Wow. She is good but like many have said keep an open but not naive mind when taking her class. Very passionate and interesting to listen too. She's funny and sarcastic. Has traveled a lot! Overall just pay attention and bend a bit to her rules. She really is great fun.
Before taking this class, i was pretty pumped. But two weeks in, i was ready to get out. She has a lot of personal insight (because she's traveled a lot). She's sarcastic and very involved. But she's very narrow minded. If you don't see things her way, good luck! She picks favorites, and if you're not one of them, again good luck! Don't take her!
What a fantastic teacher to decide to come and teach at a cc. Makes you dig into literary works and analyze at a level that most dont. She is a wonderful person, loved going to office hours and she wrote a wonderful recommendation. Def Recommend.
This teacher is very annoying, she talks like she is better than her class and she isnt very helpful when it comes to , well anything for that matter.DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
This teacher does have a way of making otherwise boring literature seem interesting and real. However, she marked me down on a paper for my structure when I have been structuring papers in college the same way for years. The tests are essay and not that hard but I spent the whole worring about my "structure"
She is horrible! You have two 3-5 page papers due. Mini quizes after every reading. One-two major exams. You read the bible, which is fine except if you don't belive what she belives your SOL! She preaches to her class on her belifes. She plays favorites and thinks she is better than her class. I work hard and my grade suffered! Don't take her!
This woman is amazing! She is a great teacher! She excpects college level students to do college level work and rightfully so. I would take any of her classes!
She was awesome, but didnt like it when students came to class late - she really wants you to learn, and she is passionate for her work.
Horrible teacher. When asked for help, she repeats everything you already know.
She is a very bad teacher. She thinks she is wise and she isn't. She will only try and press her ideas on you, and if you disagree with her beliefs she will only criticize you. She only tries to teach her opinion of things. Not a good teacher at all, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!
She teaches her interpretation of things and tests on it, even though she tells us to interpret it for ourselves. She expects u to have the same "knowledge" as her, which is impossible considering she majored in these studies and we have not. I recommend going with another teacher.
She loves what she does, but gets in the habit of teaching her opinion. Her tests are unclear as well as her essay instructions. She expects a much higher level of knowledge about the subject, which, unless it's your major, most poeple don't have. So unless you are a genius in this area, go w/ a different teacher.
Unless you enjoy thinking, don't take this class. She makes the material really interesting and just encourages you to reall think about it. Difficult tests, but as long as you do a thourough reading beforehand and analyzation, you should do well. I think she's wise and interesting, but that's my opinion.
She sucks. You buy about 8 books, only read a portion of most of them. She interupts the class with bs like when someone doesnt have a book or comes in late or leaves early....thats their business,we dont want to hear her complain about it.
Most people who take this class figure she is too hard of a teacher, that is not the case. She really wants you to learn the material which is why she is so hard, but I took her class and I enjoyed it and I actually learned something, I recommend her if you feel like learning knowledge that will help you in your everyday life.
This class was kind of hard. She is very wise and caring, but I think she requires much more knowledge then someone in an intro class. I learned a lot about life, but not about anything else. I found myself confused a lot of the time.
she was a cool teacher. the subject was really interesting to me. i took it in the summer and still did good so id recommend her.
I took her 05 Summer and show up everyday, did all extra credit but still ended up with C! She is smart no doubt about it but she is expecting too much for a student. You will pass this class but if you want an A, you might want to try another professor.
Very intelligent and passionate teacher. She gives life lessons as well as crazy details about all she teaches(she a freakin encycolpedia!). You should read the material because she expects participation. Also, little writing and homework besides reading. Strict about tardiness and being un prepared
Presents interesting subject matter. Requires reading, but easy to b.s. as long as you're listening to her reiterate the entire assignment. Nice, yet egotistical. Class wasn't bad, but wouldn't take her again.
I took her 2006 Fall class, I'm sorry, but she was terrible. I attended all classes till about half way, then could not take it anymore. She requires too much from her students when grading her essays and such. Also she is too opinionated on everything. Dont take her, unless you like getting frustrated.
This will be a very difficult class if you take it. Be prepared to read a lot and there are 3-4 papers you will have to write. I got a B in this class, but it was not easy at all. Your chances of getting an A are slim to none if you take this class , but the life lessons she teaches are interesting. Your GPA will suffer for these lessons though
Her favorite quote is "true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing" while her demeanor relentlessly suggests "I know everything". She's bias and incredibly hypocritical. She is extremely knowledgeable on the subject. However, that knowledge is often overcome by her insatiable need to inject her radical and obnoxious world views -- Annoying ~
Interesting class but not what I was expecting. Not your regular HUM class that focuses on art, music, etc., but more on current events. No tests, but 3 major papers and a final was required. Papers were based on required texts and lectures. Pay attention, take notes, read the texts, have the ability to write at a college level and you'll get an A.
In the way of the readings and the work, sure. That was fine. In the way of her, eh. She's very passionate about what she does, which is a plus. A prof like that is rare. However, I got the vibe she hated the fact that you on the other hand are not very passionate about what you're doing. And that you will be punished.
More of a hottie than most guys know
AWSOME BRAIN. 5 stars for teaching important female figures in history and literature in fair and clear manner! A true representation of female gender's accomplishments to balance the male gender's. NOT a male hater! (3 guys in class finished!) a fair grader, helps all her students! Excellent teacher!! Well rounded cool class! and I finished:)
Very hard, requires a lot of you. I found that most people in the class complained (which match the complaints here) because they want an easy A. I have communicated with her after class to discuss her subjects and never felt hated (being a male and all). Work hard, be prepared, and you will be treated fairly. Not everyone is an A student.
She wasn’t bad! A very interesting and intelligent woman. I would suggest taking her for summer only, I heard the regular semester has a lot of reading. I took her course over summer & got a B (wasn’t that hard because she is interesting). She’s very clear and basically tells you what she wants for essays, tests etc.
She is a very good story teller! The class wasn't bad. If you are good with greek mythology then you will definatly understand the class. Just do not slack on your reading!
She is a great professor, quite intelligent. You must take good notes in class, she goes over most of the reading. She is very clear as to what she expects, and may be intimidating, but friendly at the same time!
Very good, passionate teacher, knows her stuff for sure and makes the class very interesting. A little one-sided though but if you get past that you'll enjoy the class
very boring teacher do not take this teacher her class is really hard. i had to read three books and write about it in a 8 weeks. keep away from her her papers are really hard
Stay away from this teacher.
I took her short-term class. It was easy and enjoyable. She's a great teacher!
a great teacher...very knowledgeable in every sense of the word. passionate about the subject she teaches. the papers require thought, heaven forbid if they didn't and the provocation of thought was only limited to your high school days. a private school caliber teacher at the community level - i appreciated her wisdom and educational inspiration
This teacher is very smart but so dramatic. Some times gives her opinion to much. She she grades SO hard, shes a cruel human being. She likes seeing us fail, I'm convinced.no one in my class got good grades on her essays. Its hopeless, dont try.Take this class to learn, not for the grade. She has no sympathy for slow learners.
A professor that will open your eyes to the lessons of the world; however she is not for the faint of hearts. She has a semi- militaristic approach that can come across somewhat caustic, but she's passionate and very educated. The class is demanding and she does not tolerate idiots- this she is verbal about. Great class.
Truly a wonderful professor. She can be intimidating, but she really cares about her students, and the information she shares is great. Myself and several classmates 'hear her voice' telling us about morality weeks later! Definitely worth the time and effort -- and her essays are NOT that bad!
Definitely one of my favorite classes. Mapes is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her subject. I swear she has a reading radar...if you don't keep up, she knows, and she'll make you look like an idiot. Can be intimidating if she finds you inadequate, so do yourself a favor and know your stuff.
Those who seek great knowledge and wisdom from human history should really enjoy this course. I took HUM102 in Fall 08, no text book but many handouts and few paper back books. No room for absences or tardiness, be there on time or else! Great material! No scan-trons needed, grades on class-participation and essays. A wonderful teacher! EVC
She's the best. Will help you if you ask her. Don't be shy with her other wise she'll figure you don't need help. College, ask questions, study, and learn!
Great class! Mapes is quiet the teacher, be there every day on time, essays are a pain but everything else is easy.
She is a horrible, unfair teacher. i was supposed to get a B or C and she failed me just because she did not like me. WORSE TEACHER AT GROSSMONT
Professor Mapes is very hard. Do not take her unless you absolutley have to. We rush through everything. We have 2 big essays. We have to buy 4 books and we only get through 2 of them and then we speed through the other 2. She is also very unfair when it comes to grading our essays and she doesn't explain it well! She gave me a D and I workes hard
DO NOT TAKE HER WHATEVER YOU DO PLEASE!!!!!!!!
She is a horrible and very unfair professor. She doesn't listen to what her students think. It just matters what she thinks.
Hot teacher! Only three essays and helps you when you need her to. She'll help you put together a thesis statement if need the help. Go Mapes!
I will be honest with you, at first I thought she was a good teacher, but two days in, I changed my mind. She is very hard and very unfair with her grading. she doesn't care why you were absnet, if you missed a quiz or a test, you get a ) and can't maek it up.
She is so self righteous. Be careful is you take her. she is very hard and expects a lot out of all her students.
Prof. Mapes expects her students to be prepared and ready for class. She is well-educated and traveled so she believes very much in a worldview. Read the assignments, write the papers and she'll reward you for your hard work. If you want a class where you can slack, make stupid comments and expect to BS an A, don't take her.
she is VERY hard to understand. she makes you work A LOT. don't take her if you ddon't have to!
Unfair in grading, essay prompts are extremly difficult, I felt like I was in an honors class. You have to think like her or its not right. Talks trash about relgion every chance she gets! I came to class and tried to particpated everyday, she stopped calling on me. DON'T TAKE!
Re-took her Hum 110 class, and realized half way though the semester that unless you think like her your in trouble. Her essays are graded unfairly, her prompts are horrible. Be sure to show up 15mins BEFORE class, never show up late!
Tough? Yes. Awesome? An even bigger yes. Quit whining. Don't register unless you want to do some work. For that matter, don't register for college unless you want to work!
I disagree with every negative comment here. She is extremely passionate about everything she teaches and expects common sense and basic participation from her students. It's not a hard class if you just quit sleeping and pay attention. She WILL call you out when you're late or sleeping! Just don't do it!
Highly opinionated, denigrates other religions despite mandating her Bible, strong political biases, demeaning to students verbally and "grading" papers. Unless you enjoy being belittled by an oppressive "teacher", avoid her classes like the plague!
Is she hard? You betcha! Is she fair? Yes. Make note that most of the negative comments are poorly written and full of spelling and grammar errors. What's wrong with a college prof expecting a college student to perform at a college level? You do NOT need to share her views. My paper went against her 100% but I still managed an A.
Mapes is a very difficult professor. Unless you share her beliefs and opinions, you will not do well. Her prompts are very unclear and extremely difficult. Never show up to class late or you are in trouble. Just avoid this class unless you are up for the challenge and criticism. There are no spelling errors in this review now is there?
Very unhelpful teacher. If you don not agree with her you will end up on her bad side, and you will be doomed. She puts you down every time you raise your hand. Not a good professor, do not take her class.
This class would have been interesting if the person teaching it had been more interesting. You could not read her writing, she makes you feel like you can't use the restroom. All the tests are written essays in class. She has very high expectations. If this is your first time in college as it was mine, don't take this class first.
High expectations. Lots of handouts, absolutely must read book(s) + be prepared in class, very harsh grading papers. She can be very degrading, intimidating, depends on her mood. Very knowledgeable though. Never be late. She's a master of the evil eye. We may be an exception, but our class was about 3 days behind schedule. She's fond of tangents.
Professor Mapes is very smart and knows a lot; however, she lacks the ability to give her students a fair grade. We have about 3 or 4 very hard, not explained well essays based on readings. If you do not share the same view as her, you are doomed. NEVER be late to this class. Just don't take it unless you are sure you will pass!
Horrible teacher. She knows a lot, but does not teach it, and will tell you you are ignorant if you do understand. Her class is terribly hard and so boring.
Oh my God a teacher that expects you to be on time and wants you to read, study, and work hard! That's terrible isn't it? I don't know what's wrong with these people, perhaps they should go get their degrees online. Professor Mapes was so great I took her for both sections she teaches. I also got an "A". She does allow you to have a different view.
Professor Mapes is very smart, but she does not treat her students fairly. She picks favorites. The essays are very hard. if this is your first college class, do not take! She grades the essays unfairly. if you do not agree with the things she believes you will suffer. Also, never be late at all!
Loved the Class and Professor Mapes. She is very smart, worldly and cultured. She can be very intimidating. I think she likes teaching to those who want to learn. The other ratings are correct she does expect you to work hard and participate. You need to read the texts and go to class. If you want to be lazy don't take this course.
Honestly, she is the most condescending teacher and person I have ever met. If you don't agree with her, she has it out for you the rest of the semester. She is incredibly passionate about everything she teaches, but as a person, she is very hard to sit with for an hour and 15 minutes. I don't recommend taking her class.
OMFG! Shes from outta no where. She is smart, intelligent, very well travelled, culturally informed but a TOTAL ARSE. If you have been to boot camp you will survive the class but if you havent... RUN AWAY! She is a HUGE feminist. She always talked about how men are worthless and women are under appreciated. This class is only good for last resorts.
Professor Mapes is a horrible teacher. She is very demeaning,a total feminist, and does not care about males! Does not grade fairly, talks down to students, but does know Humanities if you want to learn all about Greek mythology. I loved Humanities until I took it with Mapes. She does not deserve to teach or interact with humans.
Ms. Mapes is tough, cynical, intelligent, and caustic. She expects a lot from her students. Tip: Take Eng. 101 BEFORE taking Hum 101 because she expects you to be able write an expository essay and if you have trouble she will help you. Very opinionate, but who isn't. Got a C and was glad to get it.
If you want to take a class with a VERY knowledgeable professor who is passionate about what she is teaching, then this is the one. She expects her students to be as serious about learning as she is about teaching. Her essays are only hard in the sense that she asks you to formulate an opinion and DEFEND it based on the readings (not unreasonable).
I have mixed feelings about her. She obviously knows a lot and wants to share it with everyone. She can be pretty funny but she flips out if you leave or talk or move an inch. If you are willing to do the work it takes you'll get a good grade. She wants her students to be into the subject just as much as she is. I wouldnt not recommend her.
DEFINITELY DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! She knows a lot but she is super unfair and grades too harshly. We are not all humanity majors and most of us dont give a darn. Take a different teacher or dont take the class at all!!!!!
I had her for intro. She is very knowledgeable, but she's basically a brunette Sue Sylvester (the cheer coach from Glee). When you ask her for help she is nice, but can be almost insulting in class. The course might as well be called, "The Odyssey."
She is the most intense person I have ever met. This class is extremely difficult but she makes it interesting because she is so damn passionate about it.Reading the Bible and the Odyssey in such depth is not easy, you have to keep up! I earned an A, honestly I would have been proud with a C.
She comes off as a feminist. That's not to say that she will knock your grade down for being Male, but I find myself writing my papers to please her. There are no tests in this class, but you have to write 5 papers. I kinda like her, I fear her, and I am annoyed by her. She is really passionate about humanities. Take her if you can handle it.
She is very intelligent and she does sound like a feminist. This is my first B from her class, granted that it was my first time writing in a college level. She is helpful, you can send her a draft of your paper and she will tell you what you did wrong. She replies to emails as well.
If you want to learn take her class. If you are in college to "get by" forget it. I learned more in this class than I ever expected. Gwenyth Mapes is on par with the greatest teachers in the history of man.
Took two of her classes, by far the best and most inspiring teacher I've ever had. I learned how to write a legitimate argumentative paper in her class, and have gotten A's on every essay I've written since (very important as a literature major). Critical thinking skills are what you need to succeed in this class.
This professor is, in my opinion, a joke. She teaches her opinion as fact, and even some fiction as fact as well. If you do not agree with her opinions, do not dare say it, either. She WILL tell you that you are wrong. Not only this, but the essays she asks you to write must be in a seventh grade format, not an actual college level format.
Prof. Mapes is a HYPOCRITICAL, SELF-CENTERED, EGOTISTICAL TYRANT!If you want a teacher who makes you feel less than human, then this is your teacher! However, if you want to progress as a person and contribute to the progression of humanity DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! Honestly, she is the worst teacher i have ever had. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER!!
The best professor I have ever had. Educated and opinionated and not afraid to show it! Can be intimidating at times, but she means well. She's an amazing person with compassion and humility, and she encourages her students to live their lives with the same qualities. Excellent professor.
She is completely degrading towards CHRISTIANS & MEN. She blatantly states that we need to be tolerate of all religions & then BASHES Christianity. It's so sad. 4 papers. Pretty easy grader, but regardless just because of her pure ARROGANCE, worse teacher I've ever had. DON'T TAKE . The books are so boring, and long on top of it all. Pop quizzes to
This class wasn't terribly hard but it wasn't easy. Professor Mapes isn't my cup of tea. She explains a lot of things, but it's all unorganized. I felt lost a lot of the time. I felt as though she didn't cover what we were being tested on, and her quizzes/essay are worded strangely. I wasn't exactly sure what she was asking for on them.
As far as I'm concerned, she's awful at her job. She teaches things based on her opinion, and not fact. Sh asks that the class be respectful to all religions and opinions, however she herself is not respectful of her students opinions and beliefs. It's fine to be a feminist and an atheist. But don't teach according to that.
Truth be told, I love reading, writing, and analyzing. However, this "professor" is one of the most useless hypocritical teachers I have ever encountered. She teaches her interpretation of text as FACT. Mapes had the audacity to tell me my interpretation of a certain text was wrong, and as evidence for this, she presented HER interpretation. Wut.
I took Mapes for Women and Western Culture and absolutely loved the class. She provided us with great reading material and the assignments were interesting and informative. Class discussions gave everybody a chance to participate, she encouraged each person to share their view. As a Women's Studies major I loved her strength and personality.
Was a pretty decent class. Although Mapes' comments may seem rude, she did open my eyes as a christian and taught me to read between the lines and everyone has an interpretation for the readings we had. Class will be easy if you READ! and she gets mad if no one knows the answers to her question. Essays were straightforward and tests had no m/c :|
This is the beastie we all go to the movies to see. See her in true color, in real life, and take her class if you dare. Look deem into the abyss and reach down and touch the center of the Earth. She is like no other. She is the night. She is the Winter, she is your soul!
There's a lot of reading involved in this class, but as long as you do the reading and bring your books to class everyday and follow along to the lecture, you'll do alright. She makes lectures so interesting and has so much knowledge. Really one of the most interesting history/humanities teacher I've ever had!
Bad teacher
She's an amazing teacher!
This class is not for people looking for an easy A, I don't even know if an A is possible. Although she's tough and sometimes scary, she's thought provoking and one of my favorite teachers. Do not leave or look away from her or the book during class, she will make a scene of it.
Excellent teacher who demands. I admire her honesty and respect her frankness. We live in a world of sensitivity by all of the negative comments. Come to class, don't be late, do your work, and put in the effort. Grow up. I expected a 'C' and accomplished a 'B' by putting in the work. I would absolutely take her class again no question.
Shes a pretty easy teacher just make sure you attend class because she doesn't like to repeat what you missed. Also I didn't read all the text book probably only one page and she goes over the material in class so it wasn't a big deal.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. She is way too demanding of her students. If you walk in late or look away from your book she will make a scene of it. She loads up on coffee the whole class and prances around yapping about her opinions like they're facts. Her quizzes are impossible to pass unless you STUDY the readings. Worst teacher I've had at Grossmont.
ABSOLUTE HORRIBLE TEACHER. very impersonable and talks as if her all of her opinions are facts. Only two essay tests and one outline due through out the semester, so if you fail one you're mostlikely doomed. Also, she loves pop quizzes with the most random questions that you probably wont know and is an extremily hard grader. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Do not expect any help. She treats her students as if they know nothing and she is always right. inconsiderate, discouraging, and rude. NOT an easy grader and not very willing to help you learn how to do better. Terrible at responding to email. NEVER have had a harder time with any teacher before her.
The people giving poor reviews are most likely the students who are chronically late to class, don't do the assigned reading, and expect an 'A' for doing the bare minimum. Really easy course if you use sources that aren't Wikipedia and know how to structure an essay properly. The professor is not rude, but she does not tolerate any bull---t.
If you don't share her exact opinions, you are wrong in her book. She is unhelpful. Don't bother going to visit her during office hours if you're struggling, she'll just tell you you're wrong but not how to improve. Worst teach I have ever had. EVER. Really stuck up too!
Excellent intelligent prof who tells you exactly what she expects in her syllabus. She replies quickly to emails, tells you how to write a paper and helps with your thesis/paper if you email it to her.Be PREPARED!She is very blunt and will tell you if you are late/lazy/wrong or can't back your sources.Great discussions in class and makes you learn!
Remarkably intelligent woman. She comes off a bit intense at first but lossens up throughout the semester. I learned soo much in her class. She doesn't like tardiness, and bring your book! Other than that she's always willing to work with you if you need help. I'd recommend taking her class.
TEACHER IS VERY VERY RUDE. DO NOT DARE COME TO CLASS LATE OR ELSE SHE WILL PUT YOU ON BLAST AND MAKE AN UNNECESSARY SCENE. ALSO IF YOU FORGOT YOUR BOOK MINE AS WELL NOT TO COME TO CLASS AS SHE WILL GO ON A WHO SPILL ABOUT NOT HAVING YOUR BOOK. SHE TEACHES ON HER OWN OPINIONS BUT IF YOU DO YOUR WORK AND READ YOU CAN PASS
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. She holds the class to a very high level of expectation, but doesn't clarify what she expects from them. Ruthless in grading, not willing to help students improve. DO NOT TAKE!!!
She goes off topic by pointing out little things which takes up most of the lecture time. Say when she sees someone leaves she points them out, or when someone comes late, or even when she catches someone sleeping in class.
Very strict will put you on blast if you're less than 5min late sleep or not paying attention. Inconsiderate of your personal life and her expectations are way too high for her students. When you ask a question she will make you feel dumb as if it was obvious. I was even afraid of emailing her because her responce was always rude. DON'T TAKE HER.
I am in love with this woman. She is not a nice AT ALL and she sugar coats nothing. But she is incredibly smart and makes everything interesting if you listen to her and read what she tells you to. Favorite teacher EVER.
Professor Mapes is an incredibly intelligent woman, and most comments are right, she will not sugar coat anything. This class requires a lot of reading and engagement, but she goes over 100% of what's important in class. If you don't have a book, don't show up. She curves tests and allows rewrites! Effort will result in an easy A!
People who are saying not to take professor mapes are dead wrong. She is by far the best teacher i have ever had in my entire life. The fact that she doesn't want you to sleep in her class proves that she cares about what she's teaching. And she helps you be a better student! She will go step by step how to fix papers with you. TAKE HER CLASSES.
Here's the deal. You will not get an A on your paper unless you reach back to 10th grade writing structure and regain all the juvenile writing habits that the English classes are trying to break you of. Use zero imagination, become a communist and you'll be ok because you can re-sub all of your papers until you get it right.
She's incredibly smart but incredibly intimidating. DO NOT show up late or she will make a spectacle of you, but follow her writing structure and you will be fine.
There are five ways she grades you : attendance, quizzes, outline, exam, and final exam. The quizzes are 1-2 questions and are always on the book you're reading so be sure to read. You can't pass without reading the books. She's hardcore and comes off rude, but she's reminding you you're in college, not high school. Take this if you wanna work hard
Professor Mapes is an incredibly intelligent teacher who makes her lectures interesting and full of life. She takes pride in her class and the subject she teaches. She is very helpful with any and all questions if you ask.
She's a very intelligent, passionate woman. She gives amazing lectures and sheds light on issues that should be discussed. Anybody who talks about her being rude OBVIOUSLY was a slacker. She's otherwise a very kind person. She's not hard at all, just know how to write an essay and do the reading she asks, and you get an A. She makes you love humani
If you want to take an easy elective course to fill in a schedule, move on. Prof Mapes is passionate about the subject matter that she teaches. She is extremely well read and knowledgeable. Her Socratic style of lecturing is amazing. Plan on participating in each class. Don't be late. Always available for help.
She is full of knowledge and explain everything very clear. I had a wonderful time in her class and learn a lots of things. She is lovely.
Amazing class. I highly recommend it. Professor Mapes is by far one of the best professorsteachers I've ever had. She knows her stuff and is very resourceful. You can't leave her class without learning something. She's strict but not unreasonable. Show up to class. Read the books. Be prepared to thoroughly learn and analyze the content.
She is amazingly passionate and intelligent. She is also very strict and blunt. There is a lot to learn from her but it's hard to accept because of the way she presents her information. She is a tough grader! English 120 and critical thinking should be mandatory perquisites. She will rip apart your writing if it isn't how she would have written it.
When she lectures, it's clear and cut. She takes the time to go over the material with you. But her syllabus and her prompts are not as clear. She has pop quizzes on material you should have read at home, but isn't clear as to what you should have read.
Mapes is a very intelligent and passionate teacher, but it's never clear what we're going to do in class besides read. Really the only thing required is to read the books she assigns us and be prepared for a long, dragged out hour and 15 minutes worth of discussion. Besides reading, there's not much else to do and only a few major assignments.
Can be tough- if you're lazy. Her lectures are never boring; and even if discussion gets a little off topic she always gets it right back. If you need help she's there.
Professor Mapes is by far one of my favorite professors at Grossmont College. She is an inspirational teacher that really cares about the students learning. The reading material is interesting and her analysis is insightful and thought provoking. As long as you come prepared to class, participate in the discussions and do the work, you'll pass.
Super intelligent and Her lectures are never boring. However, an A is impossible even if your fully engaged. Quiz's and tests are mostly trick questions, cares more about MLA format than actual work. She wont explain assignments You will question as to whether she wants the class to succeed at times, must adapt to her logic. Be on time/Prepared
I took her honors class and it was pretty difficult. She is an extremely tough grader on written work, even if you're not in the honors section. Her lectures are informative and fun. She is very out spoken and will embarrass people if they're late or come into the wrong class. I still managed to receive an A but I had to really work for it.
Extremely hard grader. I've never seen someone grade papers as hard as she did. I pulled out a C in the class, but I know a lot of people failed. It's ridiculously hard for a 110 level class. The material she goes over is useless and she jams her liberal views down your throat. Don't take this class unless you want a C
I absolutely love Professor Mapes! She's lovely and realistic about life. Her lectures are easy to follow along and analyzes the material. In order to pass the class with an A, read all assigned readings, ace those essays and presentations and you'll definitely get an A!
Just to be honest, She expected too many books. Her lectures went off topic most of the time and she's not very clear when explaining about assignments or tests. Didn't receive the grade I wanted because she graded too harshly on assignments & quizzes. She didn't offer any extra credit or opportunities to raise current grades.
Professor Mapes was the best thing to happen to me this semester. She is so passionate about what she teaches, you cant help but get interested. 1/5 of the grade is attendance and participation so just show up and volunteer. You wont find a better Humanities professor at grossmont. Lots of small quizzes, essay based midterm and final.
helpful
The way she explains the information is so interesting! She know's how to make the Bronze Age like a tv drama! She is forward and straight to the point when explaining concepts, and so far assignments and texts are basic college exams. No surprises and she does appreciate participation!
She is very funny and doesn't grade hard. If you do the reading before class then the class will be easier. gives more quizzes if no one is reading before class. Really help the student would set up personal appointments to help others. not hard at all but must go to all classes to stay on scheduled.
Professor Mapes is passionate about Humanities and it's reflected in her interesting and information-heavy lectures. Everything about her class is just as she expects in an essay: "predictive" and logically organized. She's available to students, thoughtful in her feedback, and allows re-writes. Mapes is everything that I love about academia.
One of the best professors I've had at Grossmont! You can really tell that she is passionate and really cares about what she's teaching. The class is very fast pace from one unit to the next but how Mapes goes into details about the topics you sure are to get lost in the conversations. Be sure to read the assignments before hand!
Definitely recommended!!! Awesome teacher!! she is very dedicated and passionate about what she teaches. I took her class in the summer and to be honest it was very easy. You definitely need your book for the essays and sometimes in class. The essays are pretty straight forward but she willing to help if anybody has questions .
Prof. Mapes is extremely passionate during her lectures. A lot of reading and pop quizzes but her personality and sense of humor make the class enjoyable. Books are mandatory and inexpensive if found online. Learn a lot about Greek Mythology, Ancient Sparta and Athens. Makes you work for your grade, but highly recommend taking this course w/ her!
Mapes is probably the worst teacher i have ever had. Her lectures are long and are usually not on topic. She forces sex jokes into every single class, she targets students and repeatedly calls them our for doing nothing, many people dropped because she was completely unapproachable. shoves her views down your throat. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
She's very knowledgable about the topics she's teaching, but the lectures are very long and sometimes boring. There was a lot of reading and pop quizzes, so you have to keep up with the reading. The material was interesting for the most part but I took this for credit so I wouldn't take it for choice.
Good Teacher
Professor Mapes is the type of teacher you wish you would have looked up before taking their course. From the first class, she put out a unapproachable vibe and made everyone uncomfortable. She makes everything about sex and war and lets it be known how much she hates men. Every question is a stupid one in her eyes. An A is impossible, don't try.
Don't skip class or you'll miss a pop quiz. Your grade depends on 5 things: participation, essay (outline), pop quizzes, test and final. Books for the class aren't expensive and there are movies you'll have to watch. Tests are all written response/essay so you must know your material. It's hard if you dont like tests/quizzes to be all written.
Gweynth Mapes provided the best source of pure learning I have had the fortune to experience. A true Socratic of our age. Caring about the truth, and delivering unwavering education to those that truly wish to learn. Though the class is a challenge definitely rewarding if you show up for lecture and put in at least 2 hours on homework a week.
I do not recommend this teacher to anyone. She does not give detailed instructions on her assignments and she grades them unfairly. In my class, the majority of the students did poorly on the outline that was assigned. The fact that the majority of the class did bad means that she didn't explain what she expected well enough.
No textbook is used, but lots of books. She understands the topics may not be interesting to everyone but she trys to make them more relevant and funny. Tests are hard but curved nicely, and there are little assignments. Pop quizzes are frequent. Overall, she made a boring class entertaining,
The way she lectures makes everything seem interesting. There is a lot of reading. She is kind of a tough grader when it comes to essays.
The wonderful Gwenyth Mapes. I had the pleasure of taking her Human 110 class in Spring, great lectures. A lot of reading, don't miss classes, pop quizzes are two sentences based on material you're expected to read. Always check your syllabus and you'll pass your class the instructions are there.
I really, really regret taking her class. Your grade consists of participation, an outline, an exam, quizzes and the final which are all 20% of the whole grade. She grades waaaay too harshly and isn't very approachable. Pick any other humanities teacher but her!
Incredibly intelligent and passionate teacher. Makes you actually feel involved with the course. Tough grader but gives good feedback on what needs to be fixed. Tests are relatively difficult, but as long as you stay current with the content and listen to her lectures youll be fine. Highly recommend
She is a very intelligent person. But always makes class about 3 things sex, how her fathers in the military, and talking crap about males. She is very condescending as well so dont plan on asking any questions at all in general and talks down on modern history classes. Makes you ready a lot of books and fragments but never connects them.
Don't take her class. Spent the whole semester wondering what my grade was since she does not return any assignments or quizzes. Every time I asked her what my grade was she said "it's outlined in the syllabus", but never gave me my work back. I had no idea what my grade was until after the semester ended. Lectures are her talking for 75 minutes.
This teacher likes to talk- she talks 99% of the time. She can come across as a bit condescending and gives the impression that she doesn't like men very much. She is not really approachable and her explanation of the assignments is not very clear. That being said, if you do the reading and engage in discussions then her class is passable.
She did not have a grading rubric which made it very hard to understand why you received the grade you did on an essay. Your grade consists of essays, quizzes, participation, and tests. There is a lot of material to cover. As long as you try, you will pass but if you want an A, I would recommend an easier professor.
The only thing I was able to learn was that this professor is condescending, hates men, and does not want you to pass. There is an ungodly amount of reading and you go through it so fast, it's impossible to retain it all. As for asking questions about the reading, don't. She'll make you look like an idiot. Find a different professor.
Professor Mapes gives great lectures that tie in life experiences. To pass the class you have to follow the syllabus. The answers are there. Read what you have to, and beware of pop quizzes. Professor Mapes is actually a very helpful. You have to *ASK* for help, shes always there to help with any assignments. (Office hours/after class).
EXTREMELY lecture heavy, you have to do all of the reading prior to the lecture. DO NOT show up if you dont have your book. She will put you on the spot and make you feel dumb for even being there. Just dont take this course if youre not going to attend. She doesnt post grades and has no rubrics. Very unapproachable and belittling at times.
Profesor Mapes is truly a great educator. She cares deeply about her students, and I believe she uses tough love to mold them into better students. In other words, she wont coddle you, but if you are actively trying and participating, she supports you. She taught me to be a better student by teaching me be independent. TAKE HER U WONT REGRET IT
I enjoyed her class. Lots of reading - you are expected to read before class. She goes over the reading in class but pops quizzes at the beginning of class on previous reading assignments. Gives a chance to redo outline if needed, so you can improve. Goes over quizzes right away - instant gratification. Be in class, on time, and with materials.
Professor Mapes is very passionate about Humanties and she even takes it up a notch by reading the texts aloud. Shes not understanding when it comes to personal matters. If youre late or not in class she takes it personally, which is understandable. Dont take this class if you dont want to stress (everyday studying is necessary, homework heavy)
Oke everyone reading this pay attention. I am not saying this out of spite, I am saying this to warn you. This teacher will not repeat ANYTHING. That means if you skipped one day and she talks about a test your screwed. Simple as that not only that but she is honestly really passive aggressive and does not like students even if u did nothing wrong.
I haven't even finished this fall semester with her and it is terrible. She does not use canvas so the entire semester you have no idea what you're grade is. Insane amount of reading and really random pop quizes. Talks a lot about her own opinion. If you take her, well, good luck Charlie.
She is a pineapple lol Sweet on the inside and hard on the outside. Don't be late. Participation is everything. Do your reading.
Professor Mapes is an overall good professor. There is a lot of reading done in this class and all quizzes are surprises. The tests were pretty easy. There was also an outline we had to write and she allowed us to rewrite it if we did not do well on it.
the worst teacher ever if you want to pass do not take her shes horrible
Professor Mapes's class was a strange one. She's an intense teacher. She can get real pretty quickly but she's very passionate about her work. Reading the texts are super important and she'll call you out if you don't have them but the information learned from them is very interesting. The class isn't test heavy and she's not a hard grader.
When I first started this course, I was prepared to finish and succeed in all homework given. Then, I started to realize how harsh this professor was. I would watch her zoom class recordings, and I would still be confused about what to do for my homework assignments. To add on, this teacher was SO SO RUDE when I would email her with questions!!!
Probably one of the worst professors Ive ever had. She spends most of the time in class hating on the male gender, most sexist teacher Ive ever witnessed. If you want to waste your time hearing about a lonely middle aged woman talk about feminism then take her class
I would not take any class with Mapes again. Some credit must be given though, she is very detailed about her layout of the class and has exact expectations from you. The problem is that if you don't write exactly what she wants then she will grade you very poorly. I did all of her assignments but I still received an F. Very difficult to pass.
I turned in every assignment , did the extra credit (she only gives one at the end) She gave me an F because in her" opinion "my papers did not improve. I feel She did not give ANY credit for any of my work ! She should realize her class is a stepping stone for many of us. I passed my ENG classes where all you do is write essays .
I dropped her class, She was rude when I had a question. She told me that she fixed my "problem" still don't understand why she had to quote the word problem with me. Kept telling me to read the instructions given but they weren't clear.
I've been an honors student all throughout high school&college so I understand how hard classes can be, BUT Mapes made a beg humanities class so hard that I am sick of the subject. This is the first class I have ever had to drop since starting college in '18. Mapes does not give clear instruction&belittles students when they submit "subpar" work.
I have never dropped a class before, but I could not pursue this class with this professor. She is a harsh grader and doesn't give you any air to breathe. I would not recommend her as a professor. I need to check this website before signing up for classes since the ones before agree, lesson learned.
Probably one of the worst professors Ive ever had.
Professor Mapes just wants you to do your work and show improvements as you progress along the semester. She's pretty straightforward and a cool grader. Very respected !
Assessments instruction are not clear. After five weeks, class time is still spend explaining the assessment, hours of lecture video, reading and still not sure what to do. Waste of time don't take this class. It class is more focus on punctuation and how to write a proper introduction paragraph that learning the material. Don't waste your time.
Umh, if you want an easy A don't take her class. Lecture is heavy, tests are pretty heavy too, she isn't understanding of personal matters. There is ALOT to read, and if you are taking her class, Good luck to ya!
I took her class this summer along with another, easier class. It was still very overwhelming. An essay each week, and though she gives detailed feedback to each assignment turned in, it's nitpicky and strict. I feel frustrated every time I turn in an assignment.
She gave a huge load of lectures to watch, reading, and homework to do. She was a really tough grader and would get upset when you did something wrong. If you asked her a question she would always get upset that you didnt know and make you feel stupid. I worked really hard to get the grade I did. Dont recommend her at all.
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER!!!!! SHE IS VERY HARSH ON GRADES AND BELITTLES YOU! IF YOU DON'T WRITE HOW SHE WANTS IT SHE WILL GIVE YOU A F. I WOULD NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER. IF YOU HAVE HER AS A TEACHER GOOD LUCK YOU WILL NEED IT. I AM THINKING OF DROPPING THIS CLASS......
Papers have to be written like its an English class and she gets upset and makes you feel bad for asking questions. Unnecessary stress and pressure. Stay away.
terrible and complicated instructions, weird due dates. Tough grader. Don't take this class.
Stay away!
She took every ounce of fun out of learning for me. She assigned hours upon hours of videos, made everything so complicated when it didn't have to be, left long notes about everything you did wrong and made you feel stupid. Stay far far away from this professor. I couldn't recommend NOT taking her class enough.
don't take this class with this teacher, trust me.
I'm all for a teacher with passion but way overdone, especially for being at a CC. Comes off very demeaning/ Unapproachable. Felt like I was going to get scolded for breathing. (Back flash to the movie Matilda). Curriculum seemed more about personal ideologies. Woke interpretation of religion/personal beliefs should stay out of the classroom.
For a 100 level class, Mapes is INCREDIBLY picky and harsh in her grading. She will take points off for small things. That being said, she does provide great, detailed feedback but she is a little bit passive-aggressive. Good communicator but overall not that inviting of a professor.
When choosing a humanities course, PLEASE choose another professor. Literally anyone except Mapes. After submitting discussions, she gives VERY detailed replies on how I didn't follow the instructions (when instructions are honestly not very clear). Very passive aggressive when giving feedback. A LOT of reading each week. Again, please avoid.
Professor rarely communicates. Additionally, she also grades absurdly strictly as if this was a much higher level class.
Her instructions on assignments are unclear/unspecific, but then you get paragraphs of negative feedback on every assignment. Lecture videos are almost copy/paste from text, but still necessary in case she adds new info/context that she will mark you for not knowing. Way too harsh for a freshman-level CC course. Positives, but not worth mentioning.
Mapes is a tough grader for this level of class. She assigns both video lectures and readings. Could take hours to finish. This is because you have to write 1 or 2 paragraphs for a rewrite of the essay. After a while, she got annoyed with the class and wrote us a message to pay attention. We are, she is just unclear about what we need to do.
Can have an attitude, but will explain things to you if you ask for help. She will give you feedback on all of your papers. Class is mainly watching films and writing multiple paragraphs to discuss weekly and essays. Some of the information in this class, like books, sometimes takes effort to understand. Replies quickly to emails, tough grader.
I honestly am not too sure how this professor is still working in the school system. Every paper, my peers averaged 30-40%'s while I got by with 80%'s and I don't know how she is allowed to keep her job with such a poor success rate. Has 5 different handouts and an hour long video on how to write a simple paper.. Wannabe english teacher, don't take
If you're looking for a professor who will belittle you and make you feel absolutely horrible for not understanding the poorly explained content with passive aggressive comments and unhelpful jabs, this is the professor for you! I'm amazed at how pretentious one can be for a class that many are taking as a prerequisite. Absolutely STAY AWAY.
Worst professor ever had!
Mapes has high expectations for a 100-level course. While she provides detailed feedback, her grading can be quite harsh. Using resources like unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook is key to navigating this class successfully.
Honestly, this was somewhat of a hard class IN THE BEGINNING but overtime if you listen to the instructions you will be fine but this class is definitely not for lazy people. Definitely recommend taking it during Intersession.
genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. The most unclear instructions for every assignment and on top of the she was doing the most for the level of class it was. She berated and belittled you in all the comments she would leave under your assignments and she was little to no help I don't know how she still teaching there.
UNCLEAR Instructions, lots of reading, tough grader, kind of Rude, Using CAPITAL LETTERS in feedback- feels like yelling,
She will help you if you need help, although her feedback sounds sassy and passive aggressive. I was failing at the beginning but then i got the hang of it. It helps if you take her feedback and apply it to your essays. a lot of homework, essay's due each week. No major projects. Sometimes she wouldn't be clear with the instructions.
I don't know if I've ever had a pickier teacher than her, she nitpicks at every little thing on the discussions and nothing is ever good enough
This class was confusing and overly difficult. The professor graded harshly and didn't explain expectations clearly. Rubrics were scattered across videos and modules, making it hard to know what to do. Lectures were long and repetitive, with key info buried in over an hour of content per chapter. Overall, it felt discouraging and unorganized.
If you want to learn how to deal with passive aggressive instructors, this course is for you!
The most stressful class I've ever had. Professor is VERY picky. Instructions are clear, but scattered across hours worth of reading and lectures. Do not take. Especially if you have other classes that are hard... it'll be VERY HARD to balance all of the insane amount of work.
I have only been with this professor for a week on my Humanities 110 class because it's an eight week course which is the second section of the semester. A couple things that I have noticed is that even with a lot of doctors notes and a lot of issues that I have clearly discussed with her, she's very harsh. The work is difficult and overloaded.
Do NOT take this class. First of all the textbook is $100 and you can never meet the teachers standards. She nitpicks every little thing and is extremely passive aggressive. If you want to feel like you're stupid, this is a great class to take. STAY AWAY
