excellent instructor! lots of enthusiasm for the subject. does require a bit a work. recommended
Gwynn is the best geology teacher! She is very excited and enthusiastic and teaches very well. she does require quite a bit of work but it's all fun and she makes sure you are learning. explains things well and makes class fun to come to. i totally recommend her class she rocks!
I took GEOL101 online, and it was the best online class I took at BCC. Don't take this class because you want to slack off, because there's lots of work. However, she is very very helpful, and gives opportunities to get feedback on labs before they are turned in, and exra credit too. Recommended!
She's an excellent gifted teacher who's very passionate about her subject and student's success in the class. That being said, she's by no means an easy teacher. She expects a lot but she also gives even more. Excellent kind funny compassionate intelligent instructor. Highly recommended for any science class.
My favorite teacher yet! I definitely reccommend her to anyone. tough class online, but she is extremely helpful.
A lab science class... ONLINE!!! It was an odd concept, but it worked out! It's not too easy as an online class, but she did a good job. Funny, never even saw her once.
She was very helpful.
Don't take this class online, it's extremely difficult.
Great Teacher. She makes class interesting. She makes you work so you get a lot out of it. I loved the class and her as a teacher
The thing to remember that this is an online LAB class. Plan on it taking as much time as two classes, the GEO and the LAB. Gwyn makes very involved information very interesting. I really needed to take my lab science online, I think it would have been a disaster if I did not have a teacher so interested in seeing us succeed.
EXCELLENT teacher! She was so helpful, always posting great information on the discussion board (this was an online class). She does all she can to make the course FUN and as simple as possible. She even lets you presubmit labs and get feedback (even tells you which ones are wrong); SO helpful. You can tell SHE LOVES HER JOB. I loved this class! :)
She's a great teacher, but she's tough. Her tests are hard and some of the homework is really time consuming. We did get to go on a field trip though. This class wasn't an easy 6 science credits, but she's a great teacher and she's passionate about science stuff.
This is an online geology lab class, so be prepared for a lot of work! 20-30 hours a week to do well in the class. that being said, Gwyn was an awesome teacher who is enthusiastic and loves her job! not many instructors out there who still care that much!
Gwyneth is an amazing teacher. She is very passionate about the subject she teaches. Beware-- she assigns A LOT of homework-- she keeps you very busy. But the assignments were very helpful and taught me a lot. Gwyneth also offers a lot of opportunites for extra credit. Overall, I highly recommend taking her class! =)
One of the best instructors I've ever had. I had very little interest in the subject (or in any science, for that matter) and she made it fun and interesting without dumbing down the material. Funny, smart, and inspiring. I highly encourage taking her class even if you have no prior knowledge about or interest in science.
This teacher expects us to do a ridiculous amount of work, 20-25 hours a week!!! How are you supposed to go to work and take other classes with that much work? I am taking this as an online class. This teacher is terribly strict, and unfairly so. She does not care if you have any technical difficulties, you're assignments better be on time or else!
Gwyn is amazing and I learned so much in this class. Her assignments are challenging but fun and she is very helpful! She's really in tune with her students which I found amazing being an online class. I highly recommend this class and would assume that her other classes are amazing as well! Don't expect it to be easy though.
The coolest professor, I still talk to her a year and a half out of her class. Thats the kind of teacher she is, she wants to get to know her students, she's extremely passionate about what she teaches. Her passion makes learning alot easier. It's alot of busy work but not difficult if you do all of it. I Highly recommend her!
gwyneth was a great teacher... she is very nice and very thoughful.... really easy to approach... lovely
Gwyn is a great professor, and teaches this class with a University level of instruction. The class is hard, but accessible to science, and non-science students, largely in part to Gwyn's efforts to be available. Have a question? She'll answer it. If you put the time in, you'll end up learning a ton. One of the best teachers at BCC, hands down.
LOVE Gwyn! She rocks! Very engaging, good at keeping things interesting and always willing to help. Very generous with extra credit opportunities.
Expect to read the chapters and get a head start on labs outside of class. Gwyn is definitly a good teacher, with a fun, laid back mentality. All our quizzes/tests were online, why I recommend the hybrid style. Tests and quizzes generally fairly easy. Class was easy, just keep up on the reading and you'll be good to go.
Gwyn is great!!! You have to take her class. I took this as a hybrid. Read her instructions and follow them word for word and you are bound for success. She is super helpful and answers questions online very fast. She gives a lot of work, but it is all very clear and easy. Be prepared to work, but you will enjoy it!
Gwyn is GREAT!! Her class is not an "easy A" but everything is clear, and she couldn't be nicer!! She's always so helpful and upbeat! I took the online class and as long as you keep up on the work and do your labs you'll do fine.
online- I am surprised this lady is getting such good ratings. I found her organization to be outrageous. She is a nit-picky grader. Refuses to meet in person with online students. Though the material covered is proportional to 6 credits, the work assigned is about a 10 credit class. Steer clear if you value your GPA. Take with Kent Short instead.
This lady is on a power trip. Grades really hard and then gives EC whenever she thinks you do a good job. There is no logic or reasoning to this class, very poorly organized. Way too much work for a 6 credit class
Gwyn does not treat her students with respect, and treats students differently. she would ignore my discussion questions, but answer other students' that came after them. This class was a terrible experience over all, made me hate the subject. I also recommend Kent Short instead. Cannot teach or run a class, I don't know how she got tenure.
Kept herself accessable for online students and instilled a passion for the subject in all of her students.
She is an exceptional professor, caring for students and shows interest how much one has learned! She is very profesional and dedicates time outside the class to make sure student understands the subject. I took oceanography class 2 years ago and found a lot of information I learned that it helps in my daily life. Thanks to Ms. Jones!
Mrs. Jones is one of my favorite teachers at BC. If you love getting endless oppertunities for extra credit then you'll love this class. Labs were easy, quizes were average and overall she is an amazing teacher who cares about every one of her students. Enjoy this class!
Very arrogant. Likes to grade hard and then "reward" with random extra credit, makes her feel important or powerful. She's a weird woman and doesn't respect her students. I am surprised to see how everyone else loves her. My class certainly didn't.
This is definatly a college course. Lots of work, lots of reading. Gywn was helpful in class, if you ask her questions. However; she may say attendence is not required, but if you want her to like you, then you should go. Overall, it was a pretty hard class. I ended up doing everything twice just to understand. Though, i do recommand her.
She's a pretty easy grader and really cares about the subject. If you have interest in environmental science the class will be a breeze.
This class is so much work. Her teaching style is very rigorous and voluminous. Her assignments require thinking and above and beyond effort. IF you are passionate about the material, you will learn a lot. For that, she is a great teacher, but beware this class can quickly become a GPA wrecker if you aren't inspired by all the stuff you have to do
This teacher NEVER responds to any e-mails, there are literally 200+ powerpoint slides per week, the quizzes and exams are NOTHING based on the readings, she didn't even give us a link to the movie we had to watch in this class and for one lab we had to find the answers online. She's incompetent and I am NEVER taking a class with her ever again.
Gwyn is extremely helpful and always answered my emails. There was a lot of powerpoint material but it takes the place of normal lectures you don't go to. If you do the textbook reading then the quizzes are straightforward and the ppts are easy to follow. For an online class this was really interesting and I actually loved the class. Theres EC too!
She is not helpful at all and refers you to the syllabus. When you ask questions she writes short answers and does not fully answer your question. There is so much work and the labs are long and complicated in which she does not help you and doesn't allow for help either. If you want a low grade take this class. You have been warned.
At first, I complained about the amount of work in this class. By about week 3, I got the hang of the workload. She is very helpful, she has high expectations but are reasonable for the class. I really enjoyed the structure of this class. She also chat online to help prep for the exam. Only 2 of us took advantage of her help.
Teacher Was very nice, But when it came to glitches or issues i had, whenever i sent a message she would not bother responding and my grade suffered tremendously. I can honestly say that my grade suffered because of her lack of attention. Class was fun and informative, but she should not be teaching online classes!
Gwyn is an amazing teacher, who really cares about the subjects she teaches. There is a LOT of work, she expects a ton out of you, and the homework is rigorous. That being said, if you show even the slightest interest she is so incredibly helpful, and will spend time meeting with you in person if you ask. It's not easy, but you will learn a lot.
I would recommend not taking her online course unless you plan on dedicating any and all hours (when you're not focusing on other classes or working) to the excessive assignments in this class. A nice professor, but handled communication poorly when e-mailing her privately. Other priorities/aspects of my life suffered - even managing my time..
Great teacher, great class. She really has a passion for the topic. No tests or final but a heavy amount of homework every week. It isn't hard just time consuming. Due dates are really consistent, but she really falls behind on grading. Attendance isn't mandatory but it is a good idea to go and participate.
Class was amazing! She totally expects a lot of work from you, but is so much fun. She's incredibly understanding and helpful as long as you show up for class once a week. :) No tests, and she tries to source all of her class materials from places that are FREE for students. I have had her classes before and would love to learn from her again.
A lot of writing per week for a 5 credit class, several hours of reading from your book and additional handouts. To receive a decent grade you have to do way more than stated in syllabus. Isn’t consistent with grading and very slow at posting your scores! Wont give you any feedback, doesnt respond to email and wont help you when you ask questions.
This is a great course to really learn what you are paying for since you are writing essays for everything. This class felt like a 6 credit class. I previously took eng101 and geo101, while working full time, but I had a hard time to make time for just this one class. Expect two essay papers & research paper a week & a project thru the quarter!
This teacher is very clear on what needs to be done, and if you follow her instruction, you should be able to get an A. Yes, the class is very time consuming and a lot of work however, it's for good reason. There's so much info to learn and the assignments are set up in such a way that makes you retain the info and actually learn from the class.
I took this class just to fulfill a science requirement, ended up having a lot of fun and learning a ton. It's time consuming, much more so than I expected but worth it and Gwyn provides great feedback and is super helpful.
Very well laid out course, interesting information. You can tell that she is extremely interested in the subject matter. When she grades you get the impression that she has actually taken the time to read all of your work; be prepared to work hard, there are a ton of assignments. Take this class, it's rare to find a teacher that cares.
No lectures, runs online class like a "game" where you need 600 "XP" just to get an F and 1,000 to get an A. Modules are due in lumps and there isn't enough time to get everything done. Half the test material isn't covered in book or additional material given. Don't expect to have time for any other classes. Don't expect problems to be resolved.
Good overall, no tests, but there were lots of LONG assignments due 2x a week every week, & she is a tough grader. Leaves no comments if you lose points on homework, & is difficult to reach by email if you have questions. Complains if you ask her a general question by email rather than on class' comment board. Forces her political beliefs on class
This is my first online class and the course has made me rethink taking further online courses. Structure is set up like a game earning points. When asking a questions you are encouraged to use the discussion board. She will not answer many questions when asked directly. Lots of "challenges" and "quests" but worded in a way to mean many things.
1. Do the service project-it's a grade worth and she gives great ideas for it. It doesn't have to be complicated. 2. Register for Hazard City (in front of bookonline). A couple of assignments use it and it's fun (you can take the assignment out of the book but everyone is doing the same thing then). 3. Ask for clarification-she'll answer.
Instructure Gwyneth was very helpful throughout the quarter, always answered questions ans gives clarifications right away. It is a very interesting class, this class has some information that I belive everyone should know. So if you love nature and want to know more about natural hazards or you just need extra credit ,this class is great.
Instructure Gwyneth was very helpful throughout the quarter, always answered questions ans gives clarifications right away. So if you love nature and want to know more about natural hazards, lots of work but this class is great, worth the work
Professor Jones has put together a curriculum that really helps you learn the material. She is not big on tests and everything is pretty much 100 pt per paper. The class has a great deal of information to learn and if you stay on top of the homework you will do just great. This was a fun class and the Professor is creative and gives you some room!
overall, everyone is right in their answers. It is very demanding, and difficult. Need to know calculations for the first couple of weeks. She is ok, fair, need to be persistent. She has a huge class load.
Very helpful. Tough class overall but very clear expectations and great feedback.
The instructor is great get ready to actually learn the subject matter. This class made me feel very engaged and wanting to learn more. Except a lot of work good thing there are no exams.
Disorganized and archaic. First, you filter through her 700 pages of websites in websites that were built in 1992 using fonts most heavily favored by children until you stumble across the pages she's mandated on top of already volumous readings. Her diagrams and supporting information seem to come from nowhere. The class has no flow.
Lots of reading in this class!! If you aren't big on textbook reading i would stay clear. Teacher is great, gives great grading criteria and directions are always clear. There's a lot of participation with other students as well.
A lot of homework. Expect two time-consuming assignments and a quiz every week. Class is hard, though she was pretty helpful.
Professor Jones was a joy to be in class with. She is extremely flexible when it comes to the class. I wouldn't say that attendance is necessary, though I took this class as a hybrid so keep that in mind. I plan to take another class with her again in the future. Her grading is honest and she's incredibly helpful. No tests, but lots of homework!
Ridiculous grader, expect tons of homework and labs every week. Unhelpful and rude.
She doesn't give any feedback on homework assignments, as this is an online class that is essential since you can't just walk up and ask for feedback. Her main contact is the discussion board and her answers are very limiting. She expects you to spend upwards of 25-30 hours for this one 6 credit class, would not take another class from her.
Gives limited feedback, grading feels arbitrary and unspecific. I would not recommend taking an online class but I cannot speak for regular classes.
There is a ton of home work, but you learn a ton. She always responded to me and if you have a question you post it on a class wall where she answers questions because sometimes class mates might know the answers or be able to explain the math, yes there is quite a bit of math.
I wanted to like this instructor so much but she just requires way too much from students. It's true she doesn't test, but the number of hours I was spending doing the INTENSE homework she required was shocking to me. I took a 100 level class just to meet a general education requirement and I seriously regret it. Too much of a time commitment.
No quizzes or tests. Do the assigned worked with thoughtful responses and its an easy A. Be respectful and don't try to pull one over on her, students in my class got called out on their crap real fast. 6 hours max a week I spent on this class for homework. Only in class 2 hours a week.
too much work on labs that aren't related to what you're reading in the book and okay to say too much work for a 100 level class on OCEANOGRAPHY. LARGE work load and very hard exams. isn't available as often as needs to be - especially for an online class.
It was overall a great class! but i think thats only because i really enjoyed the content. If you are taking this class for fun, then I recommend to take an easier teacher. She gives pretty dense assignements ( write up 600+ Words every week). Howeve , there was no tests! There was a project where you had to volunteer or make a difference somehow.
WORST teacher I've ever had. She doesn't open grades so you can't see what you are getting in the class. Not helpful over emails either. Terrible teacher. Would not suggest you take her unless you want to hate your life.
It was an online class. She rarely answered emails. When I asked specific questions about the chapter she told me to google it. The virtual homework activities that we had to do were outdated and did not work with newer computers.
Extremely boring to listen too and doesn't let you see your grade until the end of the quarter. Doesn't respond to emails or leave any feedback on Homework. Lectures were boring and went over stuff we had learned via powerpoint. Overall, do not take class from her unless you want to be bored the whole time and have no clear expectations on grading.
I learned a lot from the class and it was pretty interesting the only thing is that Gwen is so unorganized. Also during lecture she just talks like about nothing. She would ramble for like 2 hours about rocks...
The worst teacher I have ever had, give you very little information on the topics, gives you way to much work and not nearly enough time, if your reading this seriously consider finding a different teacher
There was a difficult, yet realistic course load for this online class. It covered a lot of material, but it also taught me many important facts about geology. I found Professor Jones to be fair and prompt with her replies. I would definitely take a class with her again.
Horrible teacher, unorganized and doesn't seem to know how to use the internet. Canvas is set up HORRIBLY
She gives a crazy amount of homework with a short due date. About 20 or more assignments every 2 weeks. Her wording can be confusing and she is also a tough grader. She would substract all your points for unnecessary things.
Not a helpful professor. The way she organizes her classes is very confusing, be it with assignments, deadlines, and grading. She is not clear in her feedback and gives you grades on assignments that doesn't match her feedback (in a bad way). It's nice that she doesn't do exams for this class, but I felt like I only did busy work in this class.
Ridiculous amount of assignments due in a very short time and most require you to use a "rock kit." These questions are mostly subjective, leaving you very likely to fail just based off the fact that you consider a rock to be "medium grey" rather than "extremely grey." She refused to explain why she took points off my quiz. Grades arbitrarily.
She doesnt give any feedback on assignments which makes it extremely difficult to know what you did wrong. The reading doesnt relate to the labs and I found myself having to google how to do everything. She was unhelpful and rude over email. Overall worst professor Ive ever had and the class was so unorganized and stressful.
I had such a poor experience with this teacher. I felt that since she didnt like me as a person she made it her mission to make the class difficult for me. She graded unfairly and harshly. She is not the kind of teacher that aids the success of students. She took far too long to respond to me on questions about my grades.
I will never take this professor again. THERE WAS SO MUCH HOMEWORK! Very disorganized.
Run if u can! DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE IF U PLAN ON PASSING!!!! SHE IS VERY UNFAIR AND DISORGANIZED SHE DOES NOT GRADE WORK FOR WEEKS!!! SHE DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS AND IS VERY HYPOCRITICAL. PERIOD.
Her class is so boring and she presents the material in a confusing way.
She's awesome!!! Lot's of reading but the work isn't so bad. This class is much easier if you're a strong writer as there is writing assignments weekly. Loved this class!
It was well worth the investment, but personally I should have made some adjustments for my own good. If I had known how dense it would be, I would have cut back my efforts on note-taking as this was my self-teaching approach.I don't recommend taking this course if you work full-time, or if this was going to be one of many courses.
Her class is pretty systematic. However, there is regular homework, week in and week out. I took her oceanography class and got a b+ i am currently taking her geology class and getting an A. If your lazy find another teacher. There is reading, folowed by 2 small assignments each week, about 6-8 hours of work each week. Follow the grading standards
Super tough class if you also work or if you are taking a lot of other courses. So much reading and work easily about 8 hours a week. Some modules require a lot of outside reading and research not within scope of text or lecture notes making each module more difficult than it had to be. I thought learning Geology would be fun. It was not.
Assignments take hours to complete. There are no small assignments, only big ones. There are so many instructions to follow for each assignment. I don't have one good thing to say about this professor.
Assignments take literal hours to complete. One after the other. Teacher is OCD with her instructions it's unbelievable. If you have any respect for your time DO NOT take the course with this instructor.
Homework takes hours to complete and she has a strict no late work policy. She gives super vague instructions on what your supposed to write about but at the same time gives a bunch of pointless formatting instructions that she will mark you down heavily for if you mess up. She ignores emails from students. I wish I never took this class.
For this class, you have atleast (usually) 3 assignments a week. One is a two part assignment based off of the textbook. These are very reading heavy, but the material is easy to understand. The second assignment is a journal entry, which varies more per week. She also gives extra credit and drops 2 lowest grades.
The class is semi-difficult because there is a lot of memorization. Who likes to memorize rocks? The teacher is nice, helpful, but can be condescending. I'd much rather take this class than other lab sciences. You pretty much need to know everything in the book.
There is a lot of work, but the Professor drops 2 lowest grades for each assignment and there are tons extra credit opportunities. Each week there are 3 different assignments ranging from weekly textbook readings and summarizations and weekly journals that require lots of research. But I learned a lot of practical information from this course.
The teacher was very helpful through 1 on 1 communication, but very homework-heavy, takes a lot of time and reading to understand the material.
Professor Jones was very nice. Each week is very predictable: 1 Q&A Post, 1 Q&A Reply, 1 Journal. No exams/tests. Professor drops 2 lowest Q&As, 2 lowest Journals and 1 "Other" assignment. Assignments require lots of outside research and it is crucial to gather info from credible sources. EC opportunities within a few Journal assignments.
Took this class because I thought it would be a chill and fun subject, but Ms. Jones makes it the total opposite. Grading is unclear, she takes off points for no reason. I'd say 20 hours of homework a week (not exaggerating). Discussions and labs are not fun and take FOREVER - plus labs have nothing to do with the readings that also take forever.
It's been a while but I forgot to rate it earlier Very kind and willing to talk if you have questions or need help
Q&A summarizations have two parts and take way too long because there is a reading every week that is at least 40-90 pages long. Labs are very confusing, knowledge is split between bits of the textbook and mostly trying to figure out what to even do. Is a strict grader for no apparent reason, and grades extremely late.
