Wonderful professor--very intelligent and passionate about his material.
Most intellegent, amazing proff! If you want to reallly learn, take him!!
Old School Formalist, knowledgable..just be respectful
he was boring because the class was all lecture, but he tried to help a lot
Not very much work, just a midterm, final, and a paper
demanding class, he's smart but cocky about it, dont' fall asleep or he'll yell!
Too on edge. You can be nice and still get your point across.

Not for the mere amateur Engl. major--you'll read like you've never read before!
He'll kick your ass, and you'll like it. This man is a genius, you will be amazed. He's tough, but fair.Just do your best, and you'll be fine.
I love Dr. Hahn. he's a teacher that you will think on the first day.. Oh my God, I am going to die. But soon you see the lighter side and after the class is over, you will have learned a lot. Quite possibly the best teacher ever. (I've taken him twice)

THE WORST TEACHER EVER!!! He does not teach, he reads to you out of the textbook in a monotone voice and yells at you when you do bad on the tests. His requirements and due dates are very unclear, his lectures are boring. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
his tests are hard and cover a lot of material, but he is fair and knows his stuff. you'll definatley learn something, even if you dont want to.

If you want an easy class, don't take Hahn. But if you want to learn, definitely take his class!
He was entertaining in a sarcastic/jerk kind of way. LOTS of reading, but his tests aren't too difficult and the term paper wasn't too bad.
HAHN IS THE MAN. He is by far the best professor at Towson University. The man truly belongs at Harvard or Yale, he is brilliant. Take him if you love English...
Very difficult class. He is a tough grader and expects students to work like they are in a 400-level class. If you can get someone else for this class, DO IT!
Unbelievable professor. He knows like everything. Take him if you like to learn.
He respects his students and expects you to be students. He is the best prof. I have ever had. I have never learned more in one class than in his. He seems very intimidating at first, but stick it through, you will not regret it.
I had Dr. Hahn for a number of classes (mostly Brit Lit). He is the best professor I ever had. He is demanding and tough and expects the most out of his students. I've never met anyone who knows as much about his topic as he does. I always recommend him.
I just completed Dr. Hahn's writing for liberal education course. He is definitely a very intelligent man, and you can learn a lot. He is average toughness. We had most of our work at the end of the semester.
Dr. Hahn is a brilliant professor. He seems to try and scare away half the class before he gets friendly though! Learned a ton in his class. Only problem; I wish he'd let the class choose their own paper topic..
Just one of the many reasons TU known for having Maryland's top teaching...great conservative mind
Dr. Hahn is simply a good teacher. I always felt like he me with respect and thought his high expectations were refreshing. Would definately recommend to anyone who came to college to actually learn something.
ENGL 361 is probably the most difficult class within the English major program. Hahn is 100 times more layed back during summer classes. He cuts all the work in half. He is more forgiving during the summer. Only one downer, it's early in the morning.
One of the most intelligent people I have ever met. Mutual respect policy. Covers a lot of material. Going to class is a must. You will learn so much, and it is worth it. A great class for English majors. If you come to class ever day and are attentive, he "won't let you fall."
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He's stiff as a board, WAY too hard a grader. I think he's been giving the EXACT same lecture for 100 years, and it puts even him to sleep. Avoid him in any class.
The smartest individual to reside on Towson's campus, Dr. Hahn commands respect and will give it right back to you. This is the hardest class in the university and every dept. head will tell you that...after completeling this course, with Hahn's guidance, you will realize what college is all about
most difficult teacher i have had at towson. very very intelligent. sometimes the lectures are interesting, sometimes not. very arrogant, likes to hear himself talk. makes everyone else feel stupid. gave good info on writing arguments. grades hard and doesnt explain grades or do writing conferences.
This guy's an old schooler. If you pass his class, you WILL know you've earned it.
Fascinating man and devoted to his subject. I was in his classes 25 years ago and still remember him fondly. Back in those days we girls thought he was quite attractive as well, with his beautiful suites and ties. It will be a sad day when he retires.
The most difficult professor at TU. If you pass his class with an A as I did, you will know you earned it. Be warned- you will write a 20 pg paper, but he makes it so hard to fail since he's always available to help. He's a great guy, demands respect and gives it back. I would take him again.
Hahn was an incredible teacher! No, his class is not easy, but college is not supposed to be easy. He really teaches, and allows for his students to learn. As long as you show him respect, he'll respect you back. He is the most intelligent teacher I've come across to date.
I really enjoyed this prof! Not a single test or quiz, but you do have to write a few short papers and one long research paper. He kept pushing back the due date for our paper which was nice. Not always an easy grader but he'll work with you on ANYTHING. I'd take him again in a second.
No doubt. He knows his material--a vault of knowledge and very likable. You can't help but respect him. He earns it.
Dr. Hahn: nice, intelligent, & not a difficult grader if you do the work. He is TOO bogged down in American New Criticism (ie Formalism) -- a movement which, while heavily influential, is also over 60 years old, and deeply flawed. He's lovable, but beware his "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" ways, especially if you're headed for grad school.
Great big word to what everyone else said...he's tough, but do the work and you'll be fine. Plus, he's quirky! This class is rumored to be one of the toughest at TU, but it is immensely helpful, no matter what your major.
Dr. Hahn...A former Sailor who runs a tight, but well maintained ship. I had three classes with him and enjoyed every one. I have attended 4 different colleges in my life and he is the best one yet. Do the WORK (you'll love his Burkian attitude) and it'll be OK.
What every1 said so far is true- Hahn's possibly the toughest professor I've ever had. He demands excellence and he gets it. Loves 2 talk- knows everything about everything. U'll feel like you've accomplished something if u get an A in his class. Watch out for the final paper- 20 pgs DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. If u're prepared 2 work, u'll do well.
Took me a whhile to get used to his lecture style--he does like to talk. Despite his "old schoolness," the bottom line is that he is knowledgable, kind and competent. I learned a great deal in his class and would entirely recommend it. Make sure your texts are the exact translation he has provided for, or you'll see hi pissed.
The style of this prof is lecture only. He might take one or two questions per class, at the most, and that is if you interrupt him. If you are a person who likes to interact, talk, drink a drink during class, or have a snack, you will be disappointed. it's sit up straight style, and no nonsense attitude prevails. still, I loved the class.you learn
Cares only about the subject matter, not about conveying information. Takes no initiative to build relations with students. This includes freaking out and yelling at students. Rude in general. Will yell at you if you misunderstand something like an assignment. Other teachers commented on his rudeness and outbursts. Thinks he's king. Narrow minded.
Taken 3 classes with Hahn, best teacher in the Engl dept. Brilliant man. Not respected enough. Works so hard. Expects the highest from his students and gets it. Very nice and welcoming during office hours. Go see him. Wants papers that are original ideas with research and textual support; he wants to hear something new. Don't disrespect him.
Hahn seems to be an aquired taste. His class is mostly papers, and he grades pretty hard. Difficult to pay attention in class because there is no teacher-student interaction. I know people who have made it their college goal to get through Towson without taking his classes, and I can't really blame them. A lot of work goes into his class.
Sitting through this class I honestly wanted to jump out of the window. I hated the material and the assignments. You will have to write a 20 page paper, which sucks. I did not like this class at all; thank god I will not have to repeat it!
Funny and knowledgeable but also very challenging. He's utterly obsessed with himself. You will have to write a 20 page paper and sit through a lot of boring lectures. The exam was one of the most difficult tests I have taken in my college career.
Brilliant man but also very challenging. You will have a midterm (or midterm paper), a 10 page paper due at the end of the semester and a final. You'll learn a lot in this class and hear some interesting stories, but I don't recommend it if you're looking for something easy.
Hahn is a good teacher but the class is hard. He can be funny at times. He will make you work on your grammer. All in all the class is not that bad. Face it college is not ment to be easy. If you cant handle your classes learn a trade.
Hahn is an angry little man. He's an intellectual bully. I had to take his class, but if you can avoid it you should.
Sure, college is not meant to be easy. But, professors can still make boring material enjoyable. Take Hahn if you like professors who think they are all knowing. Take Hahn if you want to learn from a man whose colleagues warn you to stay away from because of his rude disposition. Lastly, take Hahn if you want to make your semester boring as hell.
Very difficult teacher. He lectures for the entire class and never lets you out early. Grade is out of three papers and a final. He is an extremely difficult grader and doesn't give any feedback on the papers, just a number and a grammatical correction or two. Knows his stuff and is brilliant. Get an A and you'll feel accomplished.
Dr. Hahn was the most challenging prof. I had at Towson. The "A" I got in his class was earned with blood, sweat, and tears. He has no tolerance for mediocrity, laziness, or stupidity. I admire him for that. If you want a sample of what college must have been like before anyone with a checking account could get accepted, take Dr. Hahn's class.
Very traditional professor. Smart but not a teacher. Lectures every minute. Expects you to read everything in print. Assigns readings outside the syllabus. You'll read to you without using a magic circlular carpet. Gets upset if people don't read and respond to questions even though he does most of the talking anyway. Be flexible!
This is the fourth class I've taken with Him. He's the most intelligent man I've ever met in my life. College is NOT supposed to be easy, and Hahn challenges his students. No, you cannot skip or sleeo through class. Respect yourself and your education and take a class with Hahn. You'll learn more than you ever thought possible. Best teacher at TU.
Let me set the record straight...this was the WORST class i have ever taken. He is so unclear, gives the worst lectures and is boring. I absolutely dreaded this class and it was NOT easy. Dont take him unless you want to experience the worst hours of your life. Im telling you, It sucks!
Hahn isn't as scary as everyone makes him out to be, but he does make u go to class and he is INCREDIBLY boring. You definitely have to keep up with the material, but he wasn't the hardest professor I've ever had at Towson.
Prof. Hahn is the worst teacher I've had at Towson thus far. He believes he is better than everyone else and thinks very highly of himself which results in an incredibly painful grading system in which he is very picky. He requires you to come to class though all he does is read from the book of poems and lecture...VERY BORING
DO NOT TAKE this class unless it is required for your major. Hahn is very unclear in his lectures, and I felt uncomfortable asking him any questions, because i didn't even know what he was talking about! Make sure you read the material, and understand it on your own, because his notes MAKE NO SENSE!I took AP in high school, but failed the midterm.
I found him to be terribly intimidating. He seems to know everything. He makes really strange jokes that only he would find amusing. Found him too scary to approach, but other people say he's really approachable and helpful.
Dr. Hahn is the head of the Humanities graduate program and with good reason. He is one of the most helpful professors I know and he really knows his stuff! I took him for a summer course and it kicked the crap out of me, but I learned a lot and got an A! He is a hard essay grader, though, but gives lots of help when needed.
Dr. Hahn is very intelligent and knowledgeable about his content. His lectures are sometimes long and boring, but you learn a lot. If you want to work hard and challenge yourself, but also learn a lot, then take this class.
I've taken three upper level English courses with Dr. Hahn and I can tell you that he is the BEST English professor at TU. He is understanding of personal circumstances (I had him during both my pregnancies, missed classes, and still got A's even though attendance was manditory). He is a great person and an amazing teacher. You WILL learn from him!
Dr. Hahn teaches with an "old school" method. I took his class in 1999 and still remember some of the material. I liked him even though he was somewhat intimidating. I think I'd marry him if I had the chance:-)
Probably he IS a great English teacher but this particular class was awful. I'm pretty sure none of us actually learnt anything, such a waste of time. However, as a person he is nice and helpful. But the class was a failure, we totally didn't know what he expects from us. I never read the textbooks (never forget to bring them in class, however).
Not as bad as bad as I thought he would be,but I don't know what to expect gradewise in his class.Grade is based on 3 aspects:2 papers, 1 final. Two of the grades aren't received after the Withdrawal date.So you really don't know how you are going to do until it may be too late.Really passionate about his subject though, and actually kind of funny.
Very hard teacher. Also very rude and talks down to student's if he doesn't deem them to be as smart as he is.
I am currently in his class and it is still early in the semester but so far: our class's paper got cut to 10-12 pgs due to his other classes. You are assigned your book and you are stuck with it, then write two papers on it. He makes you work hard for the grade but you learn to utilize your resources. Will update at end of semester.
i have taken several classes with hahn and would recommend him to anyone. if you do the work, it will pay off. i was intimidated at first, but he is now my favorite professor.
Dr. Hahn, us the best teacher at Towson University. There is no teacher at the school who knows more than he does. He expects excellence, and he deserves your best.
Hahn is a great professor and is very knowledgeable about his subject. He expects students to put out effort in his class and will not hesitate to call people out if they are being disrespectful. If you actually go and speak with him he is very kind, courteous & helpful. Take him if you can, you will learn a lot. I'll be taking him again.
I've taken Dr. Hahn more than half a dozen times and it's always the same: an absolute joy and a true learning experience. While other professors dumb down their courses to get on par with the watered down intelligence level of students, Dr. Hahn strives to bring students to his level. There really is no other teacher quite like Dr. Hahn!
His lectures are long and boring, he doesn't respond to his emails, and he needs a major attitube adjusment. I don't feel like i can ask a question without a rebuff, and he never seems to have time for appointments to discuss any of the subject matter but has no problmes marking points down for not understanding it.
Prof Hahn is one of the best teachers i've EVER had. He knows his material and makes his lectures interesting for the most part. He cares about his students and is willing to work with you if you need help. I completely enjoyed this class and will take others with him if the opportunity arises.
Fantastic. Best teacher at Towson by a long shot. He is very reasonable with grading, gives wonderful advice, and is amazingly intelligent. For the person complaining he doesn't respond to e-mails, it is on his syllabi to CALL HIS OFFICE, and NOT to contact him by e-mail. Long paper, but he lays it out crystal clear.
He's a brilliant and an extraordinarily gifted teacher.
Dr. Hahn is by far, the best TEACHER, at Towson. He was the 1st D I ever received, and that was because I earned that grade. My only option to graduate was to take an independent study on Shakespeare that he could only teach.I learned so much b/c he challenged me. He demands only the highest of expectations. This is rare nowadays.I earned an A btw
Terrible. I don't know what these other people are talking about but I withdrew from this course. He embarrasses people, doesn't do anything but read to us and HATES when people ask questions. He thinks he is the end all be all and it is a gift to be in his class. Don't take him unless you want to be belittled in front of everyone and learn ZIP.
In 1971 he accused me of having a paper similar to another student on The Great Gatsby; I was a shy girl that didn't even know this other person and as an English major, had written many papers on this topic. I just stood there and listened to him falsely accuse me. It haunts me to this day.
I dropped the class. He just talks TO the class and engaging the class is very limited. He would start class before it was time, so i would always miss something. Never has any assignments written down, he just gives it to you orally and doesn't give you any guidelines, just expects you to know. But he DOES know what he's talking about. good luck.
Hahn is knowledgeable and talented, but not the greatest professor. The final had nothing to do with what discussed in class--so it was a waste of time. He could be condescending and VERY rude to students, making it awkward for everyone. This class just wasn't worth the stress, time, and effort required. Take someone else for 300.
To put it in the simplest terms, Hahn's class is the harder section of English 300. He's very intelligent, but has a tendency to condescend. He can sometimes fit into the category of a grumpy old man. My suggestion, find someone else. Even if you are a good student, find someone else. If you can't find someone else, then take it at another time.
Hahn means business! He's not for the faint of heart. Hahn is willing to transform you into the scholar you never thought you were capable of becoming. If you're only here to slack off or squeak by, look for someone else. Very encouraging. Will drive you to excel.
Hahn definitely knows his stuff! He is very well educated & knows about the history of novels and their authors. However, if you're the type of person who likes structure in a classroom, this is not your guy. He doesn't have a syllabus w/ specific dates. It's also very hard to approach him b/c he expects you to know your stuff. He's sweet & sour.
I had to drop this class. His exam was not explained very well, and due to that, I studied something entirely different from what ended up being on the test, and receiving the lowest grade I've received in my entire life. Your grade is made up of 5 things: 2 papers, a midterm, a final, and attendance. He does know his stuff though.
Dr. Hahn's class is ridiculous. Your grade is based on two papers (completed to his specifications), attendance, and two exams. He expects a lot from his students, which is normal, but at the same time his ego makes it hard to be motivated. It's as if he's on TV and his students are invisible until it's time for grading.
If you really want to know what college is about, take Dr. Hahn. Expect to read and research without prompting, know your facts, argue your case, and present yourself like a scholar. Don't be lazy, complain, or come unprepared. Pay attention in class. Hahn's standards are high, but his grading is fair if you are a solid thinker and clear presenter.
I was warned off from him but I was mislead!if you care about being a good student, taking notes, showing up etc, you wont do too poorly! He is VERY intellegent and so long as you are respectful and show effort, you will be on his good side. he let me turn in 2 final papers and he chose the highest grade all bc i came in for help and showed i care
Don't take Hahn's class if you're not ready to work, because he's always ready. Be there early. Read the material. Take chances in class discussion. Write like you've never written before. If you can do that, he'll be nothing but the best to you. He wants budding scholars, not lazy students.
Although I am being repetitive, expect to work in the class. The final isn't really related to the class lecture, but participate in the class. He is brilliant: use him!! The two research reports take time and effort, but he WILL help you if you ask! Show up to class, take notes, and talk. You'll do fine. But don't try slacking off; he hates that.
This is a HARD class--you have been warned. but Hahn is a great professor and will really push you to see what you're capable of accomplishing. I recommend taking him--be prepared to work your butt off but you'll learn so much.
This teacher is ridiculous. The final covered nothing that he said it would or discussed and he grades i harshly. He kicked 3 people out of the class for nothing at all. I am a great student but did not pass this class. My first ever failed class in four years.
Dr. Hahn is brilliant and passionate. You just have to want to be in the class and he will help you as much as possible. If you have a bad attitude...you will not enjoy him.
It has been four years since I attended Towson, but Dr. Hahn is the one professor I remember. He gave me my first D because that is what I deserved, and I had to retake Shakespeare independently with him. I was scared, but I learned so much from him. Take his class if you want to challenge yourself and become the scholar he demands you to be.
Prof. Hahn is classic college learning. He will assign you mountains of reading, but he expects his students to be that, students. He may seem gruff and cruel at first, but if you keep an open mind you'll find he just wants you to be the best you can. I'd retake his class in a heart beat, you actually learn. For the tax-payers!
Dr. Hahn makes his students work hard, but it's because he knows the importance of thinking and writing well and rising to meet challenges. If it weren't for this class, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had confidence to take literature classes in graduate school. None of my professors has worked as hard as Dr. Hahn to prepare excellent lessons.
He's not a bad guy but his class is awful. His syllabus is more about professionalism than the actual course work. He's a strange grader. His attendance policy is the strictest I've seen, so don't get sick. If you decide to take his class, you'll use both books every day and take an abundance of notes. God's speed, my friends.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had at towson. The class was incredibly hard. He embarrasses the students constantly and the final had aspects of the class that were barely covered and obscure. NEVER take a class with him. My first failed class in my entire college career.
Absolute last course one should take for a TSEM- absolutely overwhelming for a freshman seminar. Ridiculous 15 page research paper and 11 expensive novels I will never read again. This course, the one that was supposed to help introduce me to college, was my biggest struggle. Hahn is very intelligent but not personable, understanding, or friendly.
Best professor I had a TSU. Do your work, show effort, show up. Just do what went to college to do- improve your mind. I wish I had taken this class my second year rather than my last- I would have been FAR more prepared for ALL my other classes.
He's clear in explaining why certain authors are significant, but not in giving out assignments. He mentioned an assignment once & no one did it b/c it wasn't on the syllabus & he only mentioned it once. Wished I learned more about writing better research papers though. Final included things barely mentioned in class.
Tough but fair. If you do your part, he'll help you through the rough parts. Genuine appreciation for English literature and its cultural importance; Erudite, yet accessible. Gives credit for early papers; Office hours are a bit too early.
Dr. Hahn is the absolute hardest teacher I have ever encountered. I looked at my cell phone and smiled when class had just began and got a lecture about "tax payers" paying for my education which was being wasted. Nonetheless I left the class in tears. I stayed in the class and took a final that was irrelevant to the class. He is rude and mean.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He made me dislike English (It's my major. I loved it before). He is rude. He is unapproachable. He expects way more than he provides. He may know his stuff but he should not be a teacher.
He really knows his subject. If you are planning to go on to grad school, his class will really help in teaching how to do a proper research paper (not just the little 5-7 page papers everyone would rather do). He is there to help if you show that you want to learn.
He is the definition of "tough but fair." It is a lot of work but he notices those who put in the effort. He doesnt seem very approachable but if you meet with him one-on-one he is very nice and will do whatever he can to help you.
Genuinely cares about students. Took him for mini semester. EXTREMELY understanding teacher. Allowed for the final to be taken on a different day if you had another winter class. Expects performance from students. EXTREMELY clear on what he wants. Tells you what to study. Strict on respect. Hates phones. simple solution don't use it during class.
Didn't have him as my professor, but he is THE most rude man I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. He attended a presentation I gave for another class. This man proceeded to interrupt me WHILE I'M STILL PRESENTING, bombarding me with condescending comments. For the record, my actual professor loved my presentation. Take him at your own risk.
I strongly agree with a previous comment; in my opinion Dr. Hahn's teaching style involves being rude and mean. I just think that he cares about his ego more than he does his students. I wasn't only overwhelmed by taking his class, I was humiliated as well. (ie, when grading one of my papers he wrote in large red letters "subliterate error")
Dr. Hahn is an incredibly intelligent and fair man. His knowledge on the subject is profound. Yes, his class is tough, but if you put in the work (do the readings, attend class, give thoughtful feedback) he will help you succeed. If you are a lazy worker, do not take Dr. Hahn's class. Dr. Hahn is always willing to help a student in need.
Dr. Hahn is VERY VERY VERY intelligent. It's evident he knows what he's talking about, which can be really intimidating! I can see how people think he is mean, however I went to him because I needed help with my paper. He is MORE than willing to help you, and loves it when you ask him questions. Lectures are boring, and tests are tough.
Professor Hahn was the best Professor of English that I had in my life. He is the most knowledgeable Professor of the English language that I know and he is highly respectful and sympathetic towards his students.
Excellent Professor. This was the third time I had him and he delivered again with great feedback, awesome lectures, and good understanding of his students' strengths and weaknesses.
A very snobby professor. The class involved tons of reading.
Dr. Hahn is an incredible professor. He knows the material wants to help students learn. As long as students put forth effort, he's very helpful. Don't be misguided by those who complain that he's mean. This is university level education, not fifth grade, and if you keep that in mind and work hard you won't regret taking his class.
In the beginning few weeks of the course, Dr. Hahn scared off a lot of students with tough grading and boring lectures. His lectures do, however, improve and are really for your benefit (seeing the techniques he likes in papers). He gives genuine feedback on papers and really forces you to improve your writing. He let us drop the two lowest grades.
Dr. Hahn is a very intelligent professor. It's very obvious that he knows what he is talking about. He genuinely cares about student success and gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. He also gives out very detailed study guides that explicitly state what will be on the tests. If you study them thoroughly you will not fail.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HAHN. He makes it extremely difficult, I struggled throughout this entire semester. If you don't write the way he wants, you fail. His lectures are boring and have no relevance to the papers he assigns. overall, this semester sucked and I should have dropped when I had the chance. beware.
grumpy old man who loves to hear how smart he is. uncomfortable class, calls people out for things and embarrasses them over nothing. a 73 is a D in his class, which speaks volumes about him as a person. makes you buy HIS book.
Only have had this professor for a month and I already hate this class. Extremely rude. Yelled at us the second week of class when only 4 of us had purchased HIS textbook (which at the time was sold out). Also received the "taxpayers pay for you to come here make the most of it" speech. Boring lectures. Acts like his class is the only class we take
Dr. Hahn's class is extremely lecture heavy. As an English major I found the subject matter interesting. We focused a lot on US History. Although he is very no-nonsense he's actually not a very hard grader and he does give good feedback. I recommend if you are an English major but DO NOT take him if you are not. I feel that my writing has improved.
These reviews are an unfair depiction of Dr. Hahn. He is an incredibly intelligent man. If you're willing to pay attention and put in the work, you'll learn a wealth of information from this class. Dr. Hahn KNOWS what he's talking about. He expects his students to behave professionally. If you need help, he will be the first person to help you.
I'm not fond of the guy but the reviews here are unfair. There are 7 essays, two get dropped, and he offered 10 different extra credit assignments this semester. I don't like his style of teaching (lecture is him reading a lot) but he is very knowledgeable and I do feel I've improved my writing because of the essays. He likes people who participate
He's very full of himself. Almost every argument we read was written by him. He makes you buy a whole booklet just full of arguments HE WROTE.
He really only lectures and reads straight out of the books we read. We had 7 books to read as well as a packet of a collection of readings that he developed. Dr. Hahn likes to talk about himself and share his vast knowledge of both English and History. I can understand why people are annoyed by him, but he will improve your writing. 15 page paper
I took TSEM 102 War in Literature with Hahn. The class was mainly lecture based, although he said we would have more discussions after the midterm. 15-20 page paper assigned at the beginning of the semester, due at the end. Gives you a study guide with all the questions for the mid-term/final. He's a pretty nice guy as long as you pay attention!
Took TSEM 102, War in Literature. Lots of lectures, said there would be more discussion after midterm but it never happened, it was still mainly lectures with maybe one or two days of some discussion. Exams aren't too difficult, but for the 15-20 page term-paper he will not hesitate to point out every little minor mistake and count it against you.
I have never cried in public before taking his class. He printed copies of my paper out and passed them around the class as an example of what not to do. Did not even show the mercy of whiting out my name. English is not my major, but I believe I'm a decent writer. He told me I had to start an entirely new paper and write it like "an adult." I'm 28
Someone is sure full of himself. Had to pay for his textbook, and everything we were made to talk about in class was based off of something he wrote. I made the mistake of countering an argument in the text and got chewed out because it was something he published. Oops.
Before I took this class, I heard that there is a major term paper. However, the research techniques and practical writing knowledge gained in his class is valuable if youre planning on going beyond just undergrad. This is the class where you learn to write real college papers that will get you into and through grad school.
Dr. Hahn was the most influential professor of my entire academic career, undergraduate and graduate. He inspired me to become an English professor.
Professor Hahn is a very intelligent guy. His class consists of mainly exams but he lets you substitute two essay for two exams and the study questions for the exams are given at least a week before. He's also very approachable so always feel free to talk to him if you need help. A really great professor!
I really enjoyed my ENGL 222 course and even joined his ENGL 221 class the following semester. There are usually one or two extra credit opportunities. He gives alternatives to taking the tests, although the tests are so easy no one ever uses them. He was my favorite professor, I actually wanted to do the work for his class.
Hahn is honestly a really nice guy but the class is graded solely on 3 exams so you really have to work for it. Talk to him after class so he knows youre putting in the effort and do the extra credit and you should be okay. Its hard but doable!
I feel like Dr. Hahn gets a bad rep from students who aren't willing to try as hard as they can. If you work hard for a good grade, he respects you for it and is open-minded. He often praised my efforts one-on-one and said he'd miss having me as a student. If you are willing to strive for an A in his class, remember this review, not the others.
Gave no feedback for tests. Even the sight of a laptop or phone sent him spiraling in the middle of a lecture. Never opened the Blackboard portal because I'm positive he doesn't know how. Expected respect when he, himself, showed he did not respect you. Would never recommend this professor to anyone.
He gets a bad rep, but he was actually a really good teacher. I had him for Engl310 too and I got an A in that class as well. He gives you a study guide a week before the test, which is word for word what the test will be. You don't even have to answer all the questions. If you put in the work and read, you'll do fine in his class.
Top 5 worst teachers I've had at Towson (graduating senior). Worse during corona cause he can't use technology. Couldn't even turn camera on. Had to email hw, where he would MAIL back. Wouldn't receive the past hw by the time the next one was due, so didn't know how where to improve. No blackboard. No PowerPoints. No email response. Just talking.
He will most of the texts to you. He will point out important things in the text you can write notes of and use in your essays. prompts are given weeks in advance so you have plenty of time to write essays. He's sweet and cares about what he's teaching and will sometimes do the voices in the stories.
I'm graduating this year, and have avoided this man like the plague since freshmen year. I feel so strongly about this I decided to leave a review 4 years later. I have Memos through the DSS for chronic illness he told me to "Shut up, get that away from me. No professor will ever care, no one here will ever care. Don't show me that again" Horrible.
Lectures boring to the point where it is difficult to pay attention at all. Lots of people dropped out early because of this. Talks just to hear himself talk, not engaging. Throws tantrums if your phone is out. Not specific on assignment expectations or due dates or really anything. I can't fathom how anyone has had a good experience with him.
If you are sensitive to being singled out or hearing adults yell and curse in a professional setting, dont take any of Hahns courses. While I was never singled out, several people from my class were called out in front of everyone for phone usage and one person was screamed and cursed at.
Professor Hahn is a great professor, is taking this course over the winter there arent many things that you are graded on, although he is a generous grader. Sometimes the lectures can be a little heavy but its nothing too difficult. If you show up to class and pay attention moderately youll do well.
Dr. Hahn is sweet and old-school, so don't bring your phone out! We only had 3 grades: midterm, a paper, and the final. He is very accessible outside of class so go to his office hours for any help! He will explain everything you have questions about. His classes mainly consist of him talking, so listen to what he has to say because it's useful.
Professor Hahn wants every one to succeed. His lectures can be a tad bit confusing, I wrote every thing I could down. He has a lot of experience and will help you with papers even after the class ends. I took him for a winter course and he adjusted the material. Little graded assignments, don't skip one. Come to class or you'll miss every thing.
There is almost no participation in class, he just reads and explains things to you. I was in his British Literature class and didn't have to read at all because he just reads and explains things to you in class. He doesn't use any technology, but it's not as bad as it seems. He's a tough grader, make sure all your answers are very specific.
Professor Hahn is a great reader, which is what he mostly does in class. He does sprinkle some history in the class, but it is not interesting. He's a very harsh grader, but if you truly study and come to class, the test are easy.
- If you're late for class, DON'T WALK IN FRONT OF HIM! - No papers. 3 exams total. He gives out study guides 2 weeks prior. Make flashcards! - Many EC opportunities (reading passages during office hours, keeping a quotes notebook, essays). - Boring lectures and not a lot of room for participation in class. - Very learned and traditional guy.
SET UP A GROUP CHAT DAY ONE!!!! It will save you some headaches because he doesn't know how to use BlackBoard. Your peers will be infinitely more helpful than he will. Told me to drop out when I tried explaining a family member had just been diagnosed with cancer and I needed help getting/affording the texts. Avoid if you can.
Professor Hahn can be tough, but put in the work and you'll do well. The exams are challenging, but he provides study guides to help. Definitely use tools like unstuck study alongside the textbook to prepare. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the effort.
Lecture-heavy class, only available at 8 AM, doesn't use blackboard or email! As someone who needs a connection to the professor to do well, this class was extremely challenging. Beware that there are only 3 assignments in this course.
