Warning: Do not take his class. He is a tough grader.
Professor Nguyen has so much energy specially teaching History. Yes, there is homework, exams, lectures, reading, writing but isn't that what school is for? to challenge our ability to learn. This course is for the students that are gritty, persistent and organized. I recommend professor Nguyen because he will teach what you need to learn.
Professor Nguyen is honestly a pretty good teacher when it comes to history. Definitely be ready to read and make sure you pay attention during lectures because it would benefit you in your tests. There was a lot of writing, but it is doable if you spend some time on it. I personally learned a lot from his class.
One of the best teachers for a history class. 3 essays, 5 discussions with 2 comments each, one video essay as participation, 2 extra credit (lots of points). Best to enter the class meetings to learn and ask questions and to read the textbook. Not too hard a grader, but passionate. Nice guy as well and very easy to talk to.
Prof. Nguyen is a great teacher, and I really enjoy his lectures. They are filled with energy and passion, and even though he sometimes gets sidetracked, he always comes back to making his points clear and thorough. His class is lecture heavy, so be prepared to pay attention.
Professor Nguyen is awesome. He's very good at what he does and if YOU are willing to put in the work then his class is straight forward. My advice for anyone is to make sure you listen to the lectures and make sure you read the assigned chapters because they will help with your essays. Professor Nguyen clearly outlines the expectations.
Puts in a lot of effort to interact with students, and makes good lectures.
Professor Nguyen is an amazing teacher. He is very interactive, and makes the lecture very interesting. The class is challenging if you are not willing to do the work. But if you follow through with listening the lecture videos, assigned reading, and following all the instructions then you will be successful. Very straightforward Professor.
Great professor. One thing I really liked about him was that he went out of his way to allocate the first few minutes of class for interactions. Also, he is very helpful outside of class. As long as you focus in class, you should be able to pass the course quite easily. Would definitely recommend Prof. Hai.
Professor Hai is the 1st professor to make history interesting for me. I really enjoyed how he presented the material and makes it relatable to our world today. His lectures are very clear and give you all the information you need to succeed in the exams, which were written with plenty of time given to complete. I would highly recommend him.
I've never really enjoyed learning about history until this class. Prof. Hai really explains everything that he can (given the time he has), and tries to relate everything back to today through his lectures. Make sure to take good notes for the DBQ exams. His homework is simple if you put your thought in and follow his instructions. Awesome class!!
5 discussions and 3 essays for assignments. Lectures (1hr 30 min approx) every week. Very demanding in terms of the assignments but I took the 8 week version of this class in comparison to the standard 16 week, still passed. Read all chapters assigned, listen to lectures, take notes, and follow directions. Prof Hai is accessible and understanding.
This is probably the most insightful history class I've every taken. He goes really in depth and he doesn't have everything on slides most of the time so you have to listen and write down what he says. The discussions are easy but take time, and the essays take a while too. If you do the extra credit, it can bring you up a whole letter grade!
This prof is honestly one of the best professors I ever had. I took him for a fully online class so attendance was not mandatory, but I still attended every lecture live. He is the type of prof you can have a dope conversation with him. He grades his essays a little strictly but offered a HUGE extra credit opportunity. Would love to take him again.
Very communicative, and passionate being a Hist Prof
Professor Nguyen is the best instructor at Mission college. History is and has always been challenging and complex to learn, especially for me, but his methods of teaching really guided me throughout the semester. He truly cares about how you can succeed. There's a lot of work to dedicate to, so make sure to read and go off of his lectures.
I would highly recommend Professor Nguyen. His conferences are so amazing, and have all information for 3 DBQ Exams. There is a lot of work for you, but you will enjoy listening to conferences and reading all information that he will post. You will have extra credit. I hardly knew about the history of this country, but I learn a lot in his class.
Dope class, dope professor. His lectures are incredibly engaging, and his DBQ exams really make you think about the material and synthesize it in a cohesive fashion. Never thought I'd care about the Suffragist movement until this class, but here we are. Would take Prof. Nguyen again in a heartbeat.
He is fair, straightforward, clear in grading. His lectures are detail and inspirational. His teaching is passionate and enthusiastic. The class is tough and requires serious work, but at the end you would truly learn the topics of history. If you are ready to put effort in his class and follow his instructions, you would be fine.
Nguyen is the best. Makes it feel like a real college class. If you don't take him you're missing out.
Professor Nguyen made history such a relavent and important topic for me. I personally loved logging in his class each time because he would not only talk about the topic but also enggage us in healthy discussions. His style of teaching is very friendly yet affirmative as a teacher. He has great knowlege of history and I feel learnt myself.
He is great in making connections between History and today lives. I will take him His 017B to have a continuous knowledge. I just hope his course spreads information a bit. Some weeks had nothing to do some week many lectures. Focus on his lectures and read more from textbooks to enrich essays. Do what he expects and says. Put work and be honest.
Professor Nguyen is an awesome teacher. He teaches history in a way that is not boring and engages you in his lectures. He is very respectful, and encourages participation.
Professor Nguyen is very interactive, he knew what he's talking about, he asks questions he makes us understand his election. I enjoyed every zoom lecture. Another great point about Prof. Nguyen he gives good feedback on all homework. His class is challenged but if you follow through with the lecture and videos. Great teacher.
Please take his class if you can. Live attendance is not mandatory but definitely recommended as he engages with his students. Seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. Homework contains discussions about cultural issues. No finals or midterms, just DBQ essays (3). Easy A, be active in his lectures & make sure to take lots of notes!
As an older returning student, a good teacher means everything. Professor Nguyen is excellent! I found his lectures to be captivating. He knows how to tell a story using history. Connecting the past to the presence. My eyes have been opened and I'm inspired to learn more. I hope more of my teachers are like him. Fingers crossed:)
Professor Nguyen has very engaging and fun lectures! His class consists of 5 topics of convo, 5 discussions, 3 DBQ's, with 2 extra credit opportunities. He uploads videos about what to include and how to structure your DBQs (essays) for an A! Make sure you watch his lectures when writing your DBQ, and start them the week before it is due!
Lots of lectures and reading, but you pick it up easy and are made very enjoyable. Great class to expand your knowledge of American history and it was really fun debating to different topics and seeing/responding to other's posts.
Prof Nguyen's lectures were super engaging and funny. He likes to teach history from a minority's perspective, which offers an experience you wouldn't normally get. The class is lecture heavy and make sure not to procrastinate. The lectures are a bit lengthy but they are required to complete the course. The class is not hard if you do the work.
I took this class as a high school student for credit over the summer, and although I don't normally like taking history classes, I really did enjoy this one. Prof. Nguyen really goes in-depth into the people and the history, covering things from different perspectives that you wouldn't get in a regular history course.
Professor Ngyuen's teaching style allowed me to actually enjoy history. Although this class is lecture-heavy, they were super interesting, keeping me engaged and eager to learn. He does a phenomenal job of make correlations from the past to present-day issues and teaching history from the lens of minority groups, something we need more of.
Great Professor! He was very understanding and helpful with feedback! I think that his class was a great view of learning about US history as it wasn't the same old same old. He taught history through the lenses of all different groups such as women or African Americans. Lots of reading and lectures and essays to write but great class!!
Excelent professor. He will give you feedback as if you are the only student in the class. He takes the time to read the assignments and provide personalized feedback. For his lectures, take some popcorn and enjoy because you will feel like in a movie. He puts so much passion in the lectures you wont want to miss it.
A breath of fresh air as a teacher. His rhetoric in his lectures is fantastic and really gets the audience engaged, additionally, he makes an effort to show the relevance of each issue by making discussions and conversations about historical events and their relevancy today. Even if you detest history like me, I promise you will have fun.
Very insightful. his lectures are very well done and incredibly informative , he supplies an online link to the textbook and the reading is just an additional benefit to the information covered in the lectures. there will be papers, as expected of a history class, but his grading is fair, if not lenient, despite how the syllabus might come across
Look no further because this is the history class you need to take! Amazing class and I enjoyed it wholeheartedly. You will gain a deeper understanding of history and its modern-day impacts. Professor gives good feedback and has clear grading. Expect to write papers, complete discussions, read lots, and watch lectures (Standard college-level work)
He showed the reasons behind the phenomena of American society. I have a deeper understanding of what I thought was inconceivable. Easy to get an A if you take all the classes and take notes. Just follow his steps. Even I am an international student I can also get an A in this class. All the history is new to me.
I hope I took this class in Person. Professor Hai is very entertaining when teaching. I enjoy watching his pre-recorded videos and I watch it as if I was binging a series. Entertained while learning. Hoping to meet him in person and have a Conversation with him.
Professor Nguyen is AMAZING and very passionate about what he is teaching. The class was online and I was not able to make the live lectures but wish I could have! Professor Nguyen makes learning history interesting because he cares about what he is teaching. If you actually try & do the work you can get an A!
Professor Nguyen is easily one of my top three teachers. He's inspirational, relatable, and informative. He inspired me to tell others to take his class. It's rarity to have such a great professor. I'm honored to have taken his class, because he will give you insight and perspective, that others may not.
A teacher you must take for history! Professor Nguyen's lectures, though information-heavy, are always enjoyable to tune into. They go into greater detail by including its tragedies and triumphs. Tying it all to the real world, making it relevant and worth noting. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Nguyen is one of the most outstanding teachers I have ever seen. He is so passionate about History and provides you with such informative lectures based on that will guide you through the class with an A. Highly recommend it to those who want to take History, whether for their GE or Major.
This Professor is amazing. Never had such an engaging teacher/class before. Possibly one of the only classes I enjoyed in a while. However, you need to watch two 1.30 hour lectures a week or go to class twice a week. In order to complete the homework you need to watch the lectures. You have three big essays and a discussion (sometimes two) a week.
Prof Nguyen is amazing! You have to watch the lectures in order to do homework & the 3 papers he assigns. It is an easy A if you keep up with the lectures & PLEASE take notes, he's not an easy grader but if you put in effort you'll get a good grade. His lectures are super interesting & entertaining. I recommend him for any history course!!!!!
Prof Nguyen was one of the most engaging instructors I have ever had. There is a lot of content to cover during the class but he highlights the most important parts and allows you to explore in more detail through the textbook or additional reading. His exams were document based questions but the format helps you to keep on task and on point.
Honestly idk why anyone would say anything bad about him, i took him for the winter semester so more work in less time is a given. He engages you in the content with relatable discussions and topics. Personally, I entered this class with just bsing everything but I learned sm. Midterms and finals are essay based but that said they are doable.
Professor Nguyen's class is the best history class I've ever taken Took it online during winter session, so it was stacked with discussions & went by super fast. His lectures are engaging, relatable, & respectful. He's also super funny. Exams are DBQ essays, & you gotta prepare for them bc there's a lot of information to go over. Take this class!
I took this class in the winter. It was really not that hard as long as you followed what the instructions said. You should get an A if you pay attention to the instructions. The only thing is that the lectures were really long but maybe that was because it was a winter class. But a great teacher and would definitely recommend.
I took Professor Nguyen's class in Winter 2022. It was a short class but I enjoyed it. 2 exams and 1 final. read your textbook but more importantly, watch lectures and exams/final tutorial videos!
if you are going to take HIS017B take him!!! no doubt one of the best history professors ive had!!
History was never a strong subject of mine, nor have I ever cared for the subject, but Professor Nguyen made it so interesting. Not only were his lectures real attention grabbing, but he spoke real stuff he didn't sugar coat the reality of how things really were and how they continue. By far my favorite Professor!
Took a few Winter classes and still managed to get an A. His lectures are long, but informative and he throws jokes around too. I wish my class was in person with him because he's honestly a really knowledgeable Professor and throughout pre-recorded lectures I felt really engaged with the content. If you take the class just pay attention.
i'm the type of person who was never really interested in history, but the professor managed to make it very interesting and exciting for me. this semester the class was hybrid, so i watched the lectures he recorded after class. as long as you listen/watch his lectures, listen, take some notes on the important stuff, you'll pass.
I would say that if you are very into history (or have trouble paying attention) this class is for you. He makes it entertaining that I've lost my notes and still did a DBQ without them. However, he loses track of time and end of the year made us watch 6 hour lectures :(
History is not my strong suit, but Professor Nguyen made the lectures really easy to understand, stay intrigued and learn so much! Just takes notes on the lectures and it should make your essay exams a piece of cake! He really puts effort into his classroom, and his passion shows. You will do great in this class:)
The lecture are very clear and the testing criteria is very clear. The tests aren't difficult at all and you have to do about 2 assignments per week if you are taking the late start class like I did. The work doesn't take very long and I found the class to be extremely easy.
Mr. Nguyen made history interesting for me. Before this course, I thought US history was only white history with a touch of slavery. However, Mr. Nguyen incorporated Asian and Mexican, and many other cultures into his syllabus. As a person of color, I found myself genuinely interested in Mr. Nguyen's topics and was actually into the class.
This was one of the first history courses I took in college! I was nervous because this was a late-start course but I ended up enjoying it. There is textbook reading and some online lecture but the content is interesting enough to not make it boring. The Professor was also very funny.
Professor Hai has to be the best History teacher I've ever taken. Professor Hai does such a great job at making lectures interesting, engaging, and uses a bunch of present day events as examples. Class was very straight forward- weekly discussion and three essays throughout the course. Take his classes, you will not regret it!
Professor Hai provides such great insight on history and present day events. He's super straight forward and very enjoyable to learn from. Best professor ever!
Professor Nguyen is a great teacher period. He has great lectures where he explains every topic in an easily digestible format that he's enthusiastic about. There are three essays and he gives you a video explanation of exactly what he wants to see you touch on and as long as you keep up with the lectures you will ace the essays.
all the stuff needed to finish the analyses and dbq are in the lecture. I personally didn't need to take notes since the lecture was recorded but it helps to have something written. homework is given a week to do the only downside is that I often forget when it's due, even though it has a concrete schedule.
Easily one of the best classes I've taken. The lectures were funny and captivating, and there is no textbook required for the class. There are three DBQE's, but he provides videos that go over the documents and exactly what he wants in each essay. As long as you watch the videos and the corresponding lectures on the content, you will get an A.
I appreciate what I have learned from HIS-017A class that professor Hai Nguyen shared and taught. I like the way he expresses the meaning of each event in the historical periods; it was terrific and easy to understand. Huong Do
Very good class, easy to follow if you keep up with the lectures.
Considering that this was History class, which sometimes can be boring, Prof. Nguyen made this class interesting and engaged students in discussion. He was very clear, understood and hard on Weekly assignments. Gives a lot of time for three exams, and everything was based on essays. Finally, I learned a lot. I highly recommend Prof Nguyen. A+ !!!
Professor Nguyen is such a great Professor. He is very clear in his lectures, is easily available to reach and is very clear with his assignments. His mid-terms and final are released early, which is needed because they are essay format. I will miss this class and what he taught me. I would 100% advise anyone considering his class, to take it.
History can sometimes feel like a boring subject, but Professor Nguyen always made his lectures really interesting & engaging. I actually enjoyed attending class. Exams are DBQ essays, which all come from the lectures. & There are weekly discussion posts. All in all, easy to get an A if you put in the work. Highly recommend Professor Nguyens class!
Professor Nguyen is a very passionate American History Instructor. I am not a history buff but after completing his class, I really find history very interesting. He fully engages with his students and his lectures are informative with a lot of enthusiasm. I highly recommend Professor Nguyen's History Class!
Amazing professor and truly passionate about history. Took his asynchronous class, but it was easily one of the best classes I took. Lots of lectures, but they are great, goes over everything in great detail and after he provides more resources to learn more. Open discussions about problems and challenges students to think critically about issues.
He is a awesome Professor hes down to earth every lecture is off the hook fun and informative but hes also very compassionate about history I learned so many things in history that I had no idea that happened. his web page has resources for food shelter and Financial help Professor Nguyen has every based covered. Please take him hes the best
Absolutely incredible lecturer. Welcomes live participation. Compassionate and understanding. Three major essays are half the grade, and discussions sometimes require watching a movie-length documentary. While neither of those assignment types are difficult, they are fairly involved in terms analysis and effort, so make sure to start them early.
I've always hated History because i never found it relatable to my life but Professor really made me feel more engaged into the class by focusing more on the classes perspectives which i really loved. Im a very shy speaker and rarely speak up in class but Professor is AMAZING at making his students comfortable to share their thoughts.
Amazing lectures a excelent teacher goes behold to help. Great teacher!
Mr. Nguyen was great and his class was very straightforward. The important thing is to just watch all the lectures and take notes as it will help you when the DBQs come around. Definitely recommend.
He focuses more on the fact that he's an immigrant than everything else, and that took the whole semester; because of that, a lot wasn't covered. Countless times he mentioned his parents were refugees. He wants to play the cool and young, but his criteria of grading is either you get nothing or you get all the points; there is no middle ground.
I'll be honest, the first week was okay but when the second week hit it was an incredibly insane amount of work, roughly 5-6 lectures (videos you had to watch to do the exam papers), at least 4-6 chapters to read and then a discussion and exam paper all in one week. Yes, i took this as a summer class. His lectures go on a tangent, it was insane.
Prof. Hai made me love History again. Yes, his class is heavy lecture, BUT if you follow his instructions and put in the work, an A is easy to get. Test/exams are essay-styles and he provided all the needed materials + a detail video explaining his expectations, so it's easy & clear to navigate. He's supportive, inspirational, authentic, and loved!
Instead of teaching history in a normal, boring way, Professor Nguyen teaches it in a way that makes history relevant, fun, and also interesting because of the many minority groups that get covered. My only regret is that I was not able to have him in person. His class is a great take on U.S. History that leaves you wanting more by the end of it.
In the summer course the workload was much heavier on lectures. Prof. Nguyen wanted to make sure that we learned all the same material as the semester course (several hours of lectures per week over 6 weeks and 3 essays). His lectures were quite interesting, and the workload flexible and fair to the students. I would recommend taking this class.
Prof. Nguyen is passionate about what he teaches. He posted many recorded lectures, so I felt overwhelmed at the beginning. But all of his lectures are easy to digest and made you engage deeply to the subject. You will develop critical thinking skills and learn the subject naturally. Listen to all his lectures and enjoy!
As long as you work hard, do your work, and try your best you will definitely get a good grade. All of the work is released already so you can work ahead including the written exams. All of the assignments and exams are written. There are three DBQ exams and the prompts are released ahead of time so you have plenty of time to work on them.
All the 5 star reviews are correct. If you can get in his class take it!
The lectures were clear to understand. Professor Nguyen made history interesting as he tried to relate the present with the past to help his student grasp the material. I would definitely recommend this class!
Took professor Nguyen over the summer. It was fast paced but got a lot out of his lectures. He explains every point and teaches in an engaging manner. Gives helpful feedback and cares for his students. Definitely recommend taking his class if you get a chance.
The lectures are engaging. The lectures dive into specific aspects and explore them in depth. The textbook supplements this by painting the bigger picture. Tests are replaced by written reports. The professor provides insightful feedback. It was a good course.
Taught me about history in a lens that I had not looked through before and really helped me learn a lot about American History. Fun energetic teacher who is clear about what he wants done on his assignments making it easy to do well as long as you follow instructions and pay attention to lectures.
I was really scared to take a history class over the summer along with 3 other heavy-duty classes however his was so fun and informative. His lectures go by fast if you put them on 2x speed. There is a lot of writing but he is a very fair grader(meet word count and follow instructions). Would totally recommend it to anyone who needs the credit!!!!!
Professor is very passionate about his history and makes the class even more interesting for the students. The lectures my be long and heavy but the information he gives is relevant and important to know and even makes you open your mind about American history and the affects it has had with each gender, race and culture in the United States. Take!
Free textbook, 3 important essays, and weekly discussions 300 word count minimum. Prof Nguyen teaches the best history I have ever taken. Discussing race and how different ethnic groups were treated are pivotal to our understanding of history. I highly recommend anyone that wants real history to take his classes. The workload is very manageable.
To be honest. I am not fond of History much, but I changed my mind after I took Professor Nguyen's class. He gave me knowledge about History for a lifetime. First, you may think he is tough, but actually, he is sincere and helpful. I am a slow learner, but he was very patient while explaining things I stuck with. Great professor.
took this class in summer, asynchronously. it was not as fast pace as expected. professor nguyen really understands history through an unbiased lens. i was very concerned that i would be getting into another history course that did not acknowledge other perspectives. this class is definitely lecture heavy but hw allows for an open discussion.
Professor Hai is an amazing teacher! First time learning America History so for me, I started from zero because I came from a different country. His lectures are well explained, and he cares about your learning process by providing Office Hours for us to ask any questions or talk about the lectures. He made the learning process very enjoyable.
The class is well-paced and well-organized. The lectures are so well done that they are easy to get through. Professor Hai is passionate, funny, and teaches history like a true Historian. He is personable and human. He gives precise instructions and even provides tutorials on how to do his quizzes. He breaks down the material in a concise manner.
This class kept me on my toes! Learning a handle full of new information in every lecture and Professor Nguyen kept it very interesting and very informative and he is fair in grading. Take a lot of notes in every lecture, it well help with homework and quizzes!
Mr. Nguyen was awesome. I loved taking his class.
love of my life honestly
His lectures are heavy and exams are so heavy he thinks he is einstein.
Dude tries to be cool, but he's not. Lectures are hella long, and on top of that, there's hella readings. He does not give participation points, so you either get a zero or full credit. I hated this class so damn much I'm so glad this semester is over. Overall, do NOT take this class.
I was surprised by how much I talked and connected with him in a class. In other classes, I would usually just get the information I needed from the class and never talk, but this one was different. Very Passionate about the class. Makes the lecture relevant to today. 2 midterm essays and 1 final essay. One of the best professors I have ever taken.
I cant say anything he is too hard.
Hai Nguyen is the G.O.A.T. One of the best professors I ever had, extremely intelligent and charismatic, his lectures were not only insightful but thought-provoking. His class did not feel like a typical class as it was enjoyable to attend and interact with him. Definitely a teacher worth taking & work-load is manageable and easy.
We have to write a document-based essay for his midterms and final. I decided not to do the final because thought I was going to fail, but because I did all the extra credit he gave, my grade went up from an F to a C. Since he allows late work, I did the final to see if I could still pass the class and received full credit making me pass the class.
This review is more focused about his course. I wish he would have taught more about South Asians as there was only a SINGLE assignment that barely peeked into their lives. I was very disappointed. As a South Asian student I felt underrepresented as I learned about East Asians and I felt the course focused on them only. He is a good prof no doubt.
Prof Hai is knowledgable on US history and makes it a bit more interesting. Good lecturer but sometimes goes off topic. There aren't multiple choice stuff or short answer exams, only 3 DBQs throughout the semester that are difficult to write if you weren't paying attention but if you understand the content, it's easy to write even without notes.
Professor Nguyen inspires me to become interested in asian American studies. He gives students up to 1-2 weeks to complete the essays but the assignments have clear instructions. He cracks some jokes during his lectures but he is very respectful. I learned a lot from this class.
Great teacher and made learning interesting. As long as you do the work and show an understanding of what was taught you will pass
Professor Nguyen is an extraordinary, caring professor. Get ready to leard things that no other history teacher will ever discuss. It is a lot of work, but how much you get from it is very rewarding. Do the job, and you will be just fine. I enjoy the class very much and am not a history major!
Prof Nguyen is an amazing professor. He will absolutely meet you half way if you are putting in the effort. His grades are not handed to you, you have to work for it. But, I will say, with history being one of my least favorite subjects, he makes it so interesting and he is so passionate about it, you can't help but enjoy his class! Awesome prof!
Professor Nguyen was amazing! He gave clear instructions and detailed criteria for all essays. There were lots of lectures to watch for his asynchronous summer class, but they were engaging and interesting. It's clear that he cares about his students and wants them to succeed!
Prefacing: class/coursework is EASY, however the prof and cultivated class environment eventually become tiring. 1/3 of the class is spent talking about whatever he thinks is interesting/funny, whether it's related to the class or not. Don't think like him politically? He WILL play favorites. Steer clear if you rather avoid that issue entirely.
Tough grader. I surely of a lot of calligraphy exams. Tough grader! Do NOT take this course!
Professor Nguyen is a great person! I felt in love with the US history, it's really interesting.
Professor Nguyen is a great professor. He makes history entertaining and exciting to learn about. He truly made me enjoy learning about American history. I really like how he keeps us updated about the things going on currently in the world and takes our opinions on them, he's an awesome professor and I loved every conversation and lectures we had.
Loved this class. The course load isn't too bad, and he grades fairly- you'll def need to put in some effort. However, his lectures are incredibly interesting and engaging. Take good notes and don't be afraid to rewatch past lectures. Don't let the bad reviewers (who keep disliking positive reviews lmfao haters) discourage you from taking his class
This professor doesn't seem to care about their students at all. They never answer emails or offer any help outside of class.
The professor's exams are extremely difficult and often include obscure details not covered in class.
This professor assigns way too much reading and then doesn't even cover it in class. It's a waste of time and energy.
This professor is incredibly difficult to get a good grade. He gives opinion based tests, however if your opinion is not what he is looking for, you will not get a passing grade. These assignments take over 5 hours to do and have no right answers. I have no idea how he has 5/5 stars because he is impossible to please.
You all need to be warned that Mr. Nguyen is a big-talker. He has lecture slides with lots of pictures, but not a lot of info on them because he loves to talk about it lol. His class is hybrid, online and in-person, so attendance isn't mandatory. He will record his lectures for you, and provides extra resources if you're interested in learning more
Professor Nguyen is the best teacher I have ever had. I am not a big fan of history but he was able to make it enjoyable through his lectures. The key to a good grade is reviewing all of his lectures and midterm preparation videos. He clearly tells you what he is looking for so there is not any confusion. He is an amazing teacher!
I'll give him credit where credit's due, he is fun and engaging. Would have rated him higher. However, he did cause me needless stress by discouraging me from using DSPS-approved accommodations on an essay, even though he acknowledged a lack of expertise on the matter. Other issues too. He was so close.
Has some pretty good views domestically, such as on the experience of minorities in the US. However, his foreign policy takes are defenses for imperialism. He passively holds potent anti-leftist perspectives, expressing them in a dismissive, if friendly, tone. My least proud "A" on an essay was writing a defense of US imperialism to please him.
Watch the lectures and take notes and you will be good for the 2 midterms and the final. Notes are the key to the class!
It's really not a hard class at all and the negative reviews on here are so dramatic. Just do well on the midterms and be prepared to have an open mindset. If you're some narrow minded conservative Republican this is not the class for you. This class talks about REAL American history and none of it is sugar coated.
Each week, you need to write a paragraph of minimum 250 words. Three exams total. In each exam, you need to analyze 5 posters or articles. Each analysis requires a minimum of 300 words. Don't be like me. Student who uses ChatGPT to generate their work automatically gets an F and will never be able to transfer to a 4-year university. Be warned!
It was a good class definitely recommend
Awesome teacher and he made the class enjoyable!
This is a little late but I took him during Winter for HIS 17B and it was great, not only was the timing of each lecture properly condensed, he also makes it very accessible for any student so long as they have a laptop or a desktop. His historical analysis are great practice for the DBQs that he has. The DBQ tutorial vids have a lot of hints
I had a very fun time learning about Asian American studies, although I wasn't able to attend his optional classes, they were still very accessible through recording, the DBQ layout has changed recently so its a lot more easier to write, however it is pretty much a writing class, so I would say its best to brush up on prompt responses.
I took summer online course. 3 DBQS and weekly discussion forms. Provides detailed videos on each DBQ (basically outlines the essay for you). As long as you do the weekly discussion forms, watch his videos, and take out time to do the DBQ (around 2.5 days) you should be able to ace the class. Overall a really supportive teacher.
I took the class asynchronous, but it still felt like I was a part of the class while watching the lectures. He made every single topic so interesting and found the best ways to keep his students entertained. The midterms were extremely straight forwards and all the answers were in the lectures.
The biggest thing I liked about Prof Nguyen was that he purposely excludes multiple choice from exams bc that's how much he wants his students to get prepared for university. I respect that. That's something all teachers at Mission should strive for! All of his lectures were engaging, entertaining, and informative. Ignore the negative reviews!
Mr. Nguyen puts a lot of effort into his teaching and grading, which is made apparent through various aspects of his class such as the in depth discussions, use of first hand sources, thoughtful and specific feedback on tests/assignments, and the incorporation of many mental health support services etc. Would definitely take his class again.
Prof nguyen makes history relevant and easy to understand. I was not looking forward to taking this class since us history is super boring. However, prof nguyen made it funny and relatable. I took close to no notes, just listened to his lectures. There are 3 DBQs and some discussions and they're pretty easy if you pay attention during class.
Lectures were easy to follow and he made them fun and interesting. I learned so much in his class. Assignment-weekly discussions and responding to a classmate's post. Exams-were writing 5 of mini essays. But it was so easy as long as you listened or attended lectures. He gave you almost 2 wks to write and turn in. Class was so fun and easy.
Mr. Nguyen is a good and fair teacher. His online lectures of him speaking to a camera are really good and informative, but when he's engaged with a class they can get very biased and lacking of important context. Overall, I learned a lot and had some really productive and substantive conversations with him. He's also passionate, which I admire.
Professor Nguyen was a great teacher. Gave extra credit for large assignments, full points for all small assignments with minimal effort, and clearly explained how to get full credit for large assignments. Watching lectures for the online version of HIS017B wasn't needed as an A+ is still possible regardless. Just watch DBQ tutorials. Great class!
Class and professor were great. Class isn't too difficult, make sure to go through lectures if you're participating in the asynchronous class as a lot of the information on tests comes from there. Lectures are necessary to get a good grade in the class.
I highly recommend taking his summer course!! His grading criteria is extremely clear, as long as you follow it you will pass!
Extremely passionate professor and a fair grader! Do not expect him to hand you the A. Make sure to review the videos even if you take it online. I learned a lot and would definitely take him again if I could.
I really enjoyed this class. Writing and Lecture heavy (lecture notes are your best friend), but I found the information really intriguing and actually interesting. I really enjoyed his teaching style; would 100% recommend staying organized and on top of assignments, as well as taking up any extra credit because it could really improve your grade!
By far the best professor I've had, he makes History easy to understand, even though I'm not a History major. Just watch his lecture, take good notes and you'll be set for success. He also provides extra credit assignments so please take advantage of it.
Professor Nguyen is someone you can tell genuinely care about his class, but each individual student. He is also very informative and has a lot of passion and care for what he is teaching, making all of his classes super fun. There is a lot of writing involved for assignments, but if you pay attention, Professor Nguyen tells all answers in lectures
Mr. Nguyen's class was very interesting and I feel like it really helped me to understand more about why US. History affects the world today. He made a great effort to include lots of diversity and representation in his lectures, really setting this class apart from other history courses that I have taken in a good way.
Professor Nguyen is an amazing teacher and with him being my first college teacher I would say it was a good experience. I definitely would've wanted him to be my teacher if the class was in-person but it was online so there were a lot of lectures. The class might've been a bit easier for me if I was use to the workload.
He took an extremely long time to respond to emails, never gave me above a B on essays despite me taking the feedback from my prior essays and incorporating those changes into future essays, and was also just flat-out rude during office hours. A family situation led to me getting an extension, after which he refused to provide me with any support.
I took this class asynchronous online during the summer, so it was very accelerated. He is an entertaining lecturer with hours of content, but it felt like I went through it quickly because I was enjoying it. Make sure to refer to lectures and take his feedback when writing exams. Lots of work, but I recommend him.
Very engaging class. You couldn't sleep through this class and pass but as long as you're willing to put the bare minimum effort in you should be able to manage an A. Obviously he's biased but I'd rather have a professor who's open about their biases than one that pretends they don't have any or that a history class could possibly be "apolitical."
This class was okay, tbh you could pass with an A by only reading the textbook, HW assignments are very straightforward along w DBQ, he always has clear formats. He has a very baised point of view, be aware of that. Some of the lectures are kind of hard to watch because he gets off topic A LOT. Take the async class, not the in person one:
Hilarious professor! I took Professor Nguyen for the 2023 Fall Semester and it was such a treat having someone that is so well-spoken. This class was an in-person class, however, lectures were always online in Canvas for everyone to access. He responds to emails very quickly, is a funny guy and you will love him if you're Vietnamese.
His lectures are amazing! I didn't read the textbook once and I still passed with an A. Lots of writing assignments but they are easy as long as you pay attention to his lectures. He teaches history the way it really happened. Great teacher. 10/10 recommend!
Get ready to PAY ATTENTION to his lectures! Very tough grader will grade upon comprehension and he needs EVIDENCE to get full points. DOES NOT ACCEPT BS. The discord channel for this Winer Course goes off on how he belittles other students and asks why haven't you dropped the course yet? reminds me of your trying to be cool uncle but FAILS!
Easy winter course to take and honestly an overall laid back prof, as long as you do the work you'll literally be fine lol. The DBQ's are super easy and he basically tells you in his lectures what answers you should be putting to get a good grade. 3 DBQ's and 9 Discussion posts and the DBQ's have a minimum word limit of 150. Would take again tbh.
Amazing professor, best history professor who has a great sense of humor and actually gets you invested in history. I never loved history he did such an amazing job at connecting history to current events. So interesting, not an easy A, but if you do your work and pay attention, you will do great. I learned a lot and I will definitely take again!
I took him a few years ago and frankly have mixed feelings about him. He has a fun energy and quite a bit of passion, leading to amazing lectures. However, he has a specific worldview and (in a subtle, joking manner) shames those who disagree; I didn't notice it until later. While I wouldn't give him 5-stars, I won't rank him too low either.
I understand that his engaging style can endear him to people. But that doesn't mean that one can just ignore all his problems. RMP has deleted some very valid reviews of him, likely because somebody reported it. He apparently even called two students "snowflake" in the first week for disagreeing with him. Those students quit in a week.
I went to about 2 classes out of the entire semester and ended with an A+. All lectures are posted online. I would wait until the week of DBQs (exams) to watch all the lectures. You can watch them as you're doing something else, in my case that would be playing Roblox. He's honestly really easy, just lecture heavy but you're fine if you watch them.
amazing professor HIGHLY RECOMMEND but NOT for winter. I took him for fall & winter. winter is 10x harder. He gave me a warning but it was a lot. lectures are great but better in person. He's very real with you. He advised people to drop the class when he saw people weren't listening to the lectures. drop it if you cant handle that
Easy A, his lectures are freaking awesome and easy to be engaged in. Just pay attention to his lectures and they will be used for his papers. No way you wont get a A if you use his lectures and assigned reading into your papers. 100% one of the best professors I've had in college. Made learning very easy and fun.
Professor Nguyen is a passionate teacher with high energy. He cares about his students and the content of his class. I learned a lot and it was enjoyable. Highest honors to him.
his assignments are long and a pain
Professor Nguyen is an outstanding educator. His lively lectures make challenging topics engaging, offering unique perspectives and highlighting disenfranchised stories. Approachable and supportive, he provided invaluable advice during tough times. Highly recommended.
I have never enjoyed history, but it turns out I just didn't like old white man's history. He actually teaches about the history of all Americans though, which I respected a lot. Genuinely funny during lectures, and I learned so much from him. Easy grader; he just wants to ensure you understood his lectures. Also caring. Take honors with him!
Hai is amazing. His lectures are hilarious. I went into this class because I needed to take it, but this was my favorite class at the end of the semester. I learned so much about American History from Professor Nguyen. He is passionate about what he teaches and gives an amazing perspective. I would take the class again for fun.
Professor Hai Nguyen has a great sense of humor. I will take more of his class.
Professor Nguyen makes this lecture-heavy course engaging with his energetic teaching style. While assignments can be time-consuming, doing the work and watching the online lectures pays off. I found unstuck ai really helpful for exam prep.
Honestly, I graduated this spring, and I compare many of my professors at my university to him. He was such a good professor, and how he engaged with us on history made everything more memorable. Also, many topics were 1) prevalent in our current time and 2) not eurocentric. One thing I'd change is him using aave/slang too much or incorrectly.
I'd recommend avoiding his asynchronous course. He uses AI detection tools, which feels contradictory, and includes passive-aggressive remarks in lectures that seem out of place. You might also risk having your work falsely flagged as AI. His in-person course might be better, but for online consider other options.
He is highly engaging, caring, passionate, & HIGHY FLEXIBLE. You can't fail his class when he gives you every opportunity to succeed. Can't be in class? no problem, he allows you to join online & pre-records his lectures to view on your time. Yes his midterms are lengthy but offers good time period. DSPS friendly.I didn't even use my accommodations
He's funny at times and nice but no. Save yourself time and do not take this class. I have all A's except in this easy general ed class. He falsely accuses of AI. So hypocritical using Ai to detect Ai.
If I had put an ounce of effort in I would've gotten an A. As long as you watch the lectures and pay attention in class you will do well. He really cares about what he teaches and it shows.
Weekly lectures and discussion questions. Three 1,000 word essays. He is obsessed with AI use and uses detection tools. He falsely accuses students regularly. He won't even bother reading your papers, he will run them through his tool and if it gets flagged it is an automatic 0.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER, falsely accuses of AI being used and gives an automatic 0. This is effing unfair I cannot take this class again. Do yourself a favor and take another class
Is not interested in listening, thinks he is the only right one in the room
Professor Nguyen does an amazing job at teaching history. His jokes keep the lectures fresh and entertaining. He always connects the history to things relevant to modern day events. You learn a lot from his lecture. To get a good grade, watch/attend lectures, take good notes, and do all of the discussion posts. Notes recommended for writing papers.
Professor Nguyen is the BEST teacher I have ever taken. I have found history very boring in the past however he is very engaging and good at tying our history to the present. He is open to opinions and is good at making you look at both sides without offending you. The assignments are extremely easy and so are the finals. Very very funny teacher.
Mr. Nguyen is a awesome teacher, and I enjoy his teaching style. His lectures are engaging and easy to digest. Honestly, I wish this class was offered in person, because I enjoy his personality. The class is not hard, but this isn't High School, so expect to be challenged. If I can do it, anyone can do it, just don't quit.
First, let me say that Hai Nguyen is one of the best professors I've ever had. He has a remarkable ability to make you think critically about history and how its lessons parallel modern society. What sets him apart is his passion for teaching and his genuine dedication to helping students learn and develop independent thinking skills.
Prof Hai Nguyen was the best history instructor I have ever met. He made History very interesting and easy to understand. His grading was clear and generous for the one who studied. You will get an easy A if you do all assignments and exams by using only his materials. His class is not for anyone looking to have an easy P without putting in effort.
Amazing lectures! He really cares! Do the work! Take his class!
He is great. Communication is good & passion is there. He takes a while to grade. He sets you up to succeed. Very clear on what you need to do and what is and isn't acceptable. 3 essays with directions on what is expected. Listen to lectures, follow directions, and ask questions if you need to. You'll be fine. He's also funny!
good Professor and his class isn't hard as long as you watch the lectures or attend class, assignments aren't difficult nor the exams really just follow the guide lines he sets, he's also funny and make the lectures relatable and understandable. overall great Professor I would 10/10 take this class again, seems like he really loves what he does.
This dude singlehandedly made me invested in history. I've referred to his lectures for info on the DBQs and they help a lot. Sometimes I even end up watching a lot more than I need to because they feel less like lectures and more like conversations that I would have outside of class. Lets you turn in late work with little penalty also!
simply the goat.
Had a blast! Super fun teacher, just need to put in the work and listen to instructions! Take his class!!
I took this professor for both HIS 017A and HUM 24 ant once and I'm glad that I chose him for both of the classes! His lectures were a little bit long and gets off topic a lot, but overall I think his tutorial videos before exams really helped summarize everything that is important to include in your essay. He also offers a lot of extra credit!
He is a strict grader and does not give feedback for your assignments; he just says what is wrong and doesn't tell you how to fix it
Professor Nguyen is far the best professor I have had at Mission College so far. I learned so much with his lectures, and there is no group work (which I appreciate!!). He is very dynamic, inspiring, and fun too! About the exams, if you pay attention to the lectures and follow his instructions, you will not have any problem. Highly recommended!
There's lots of reading and lectures are long. I took notes on my own throughout his recorded lectures and it really helped during the tests which were DBQs. This class is a lot of effort but as long as you put in the effort, you can definitely get an A. I spent a lot of time for this class, it was kind of tedious, but I would recommend this class.
Recorded lectures were always posted to canvas on time, and they were super easy to follow! He would also make jokes during lectures which made it super easy to stay focused. Homework consists of weekly discussion posts and midterms were just essays.
Professor Nguyen made my experience at Mission college amazing, if I was given the choice to take this course again, I would do it without any hesitation. His lectures are very entertaining to watch and I would suggest to take the online asynchronous class .
Loved having this professor last semester. All of the assignments are based on lectures, and you are never asked to do any additional research beyond what he gives you. As long as you watch all the lectures, take notes, prepare for the papers accordingly, and follow instructions, you are set for a great semester. He is also really funny.
This professor had failed me on everything despite me showing work. He is passive aggressive in his feedback and will fail you for any assignment if you do not show every single piece of work that you did. He is very AI hate appointed when it comes to his grading which is understandable, but it is excessive with him. I would not take this course.
I took this class in the winter, and I was glad to have done that. I could not survive this class for a whole semester. It was definitely a lot of work and reading to get an A, but worth it. He tries to be funny and relatable, I guess, but I didn't really enjoy his teaching style. He was somewhat of a tough grader as well on the DBQ assignments.
This class brought me so much stress. Wtv you do please do not take it. I don't understand how he has so many good ratings. Please if you want to save yourself stress do not take him. He's so passive aggressive as well. His midterm exams are large essays it's just all bad bro please do not take him
Out of all the professors I have taken at Mission College, Professor Nguyen is by far the worst. I seriously do not understand all the high ratings because this semester has been dreadful. Get ready to listen to his long lectures and MAKE SURE TO TAKE NOTES on everything you use in your discussion posts. Never again.
Really entertaining and GOATED. Yes the exams and notes are hectic but ONLY if you don't attend classes and put in normal effort. Apart from that, he gives many extra credit opportunities.
Goated professor! He is super chill and entertaining. Class is really easy to pass. He uploads all his lectures recordings with slides and captions in case anyone did not attend. 10/10.
Slightly passive-aggressive through messages and emails. Make sure to take notes on all lectures or else you won't get credit. Do your work legit because he's understandably very anti-ai. Pretty lecture heavy but not all of lecture is important. Not a hard class as long as you put in the work and read his instructions carefully.
Lots of lectures, reading, and notes. Must write everything (lecture notes, drafts) in google doc in order to get credit for assignments. Professor is passive aggressive in comments and can be rude if you don't understand what he is asking for. For a 3 credit class, it seems to be a bit much. Anyone can pass however as long as they put in the work.
