Very sweet prof, has reasonable expectations for class, and extremely adept TAs. Make good use of office hours, and do yourself a favor--sit in the front. Doesn't really follow the white textbook, but then again, who does?
Pretty good as far as ochem profs go.
Good lecturer. He goes over a lot of the main ideas and reactions very well. Lectures so well that I dont even read the book this quarter. Take him.
His exam is unpredictable. He asked stuffs that not even on his lecture during the exam. He is not as bad as Shashar (spelling?) but you can find a better instructor to take if you want higher grade.
He's a very good lecturer. I didn't have to read my text at all this qtr. He explains things thoroughly but he does it at a slow pace. Nonetheless, it's very clear and his midterms aren't too bad...you just have to review your notes. take him if you can..
extremely clear, has a great understanding of the subject matter and truly cares that his students are actually learning. prefers you know why things happen than just memorization.
Weizman can't explain ochem very well at all. Not very nice either. Try to be funny but not very successful. Accent hard to understand and his grammar mistakes on tests can sometimes trick students. Also hated the quiz policy.
very neat on the board and he made me enjoy Ochem
Prof. Weizman tries so hard to make the class interesting and enjoyable. The first chemistry class I have EVER enjoyed going to. He makes a sincere effort to help anyone with anything in office hours. Just adorable!
He is a great professor! Going to his office hours were relaxed and extremely helpful. He has the "you should enjoy what you're doing and stop being so concerned with getting an A"...the attidue so many pre-med have so they forget they are learning something. I really enjoyed his class!
BEST OCHEM PROF! Although you have to get past his accent he really cares about students and their learning. Exams can be hard, but if you do probs and know the mechanisms you can do decent. Really helpful in office hours!
Wow! Prof.Weizman is incredible! He's simply the best professor I've ever had. I never thought anyone can make organic chemistry interesting, but I genuinely enjoyed his class. I never dread going, and was kinda sad on the last day. I recommend this professor like no other!
This is the best prof I've had at UCSD. He was totally helpful and his lectures made sense if you were paying attention (hey, it's still O-chem) I recommend not missing class because he's a great teacher and you won't get this out of the book.
Good professor. Sometimes hard to understand, but his lectures were very informative. Fair tests.
Very nice professor, explains pretty well, exams are hard.. if you really need help, go to office hours! He will remember you and help you out with your grade ;)
Good teacher who can explain concepts well. Accent takes time getting used to. Text is not all that great, so do not miss lecture.
A Very Nice Professor. Puts a lot of effort into this lectures. He even comes into the labs to help student out with their experiment. His tests are very detailed oriented, but not impossible!
I LOVED Prof. Weizman! Dreaded taking o-chem lab but I finally had to take it to graduate. I def don't regret waiting and taking it with Weizman, he was nice and interesting and everything good. Labs were not hard, depends on your TA, but prepare some for the final and you'll do ok.
Pro. Weizman is so far the BEST professor I have in UCSD. He makes O-Chem so easy. His lectures are stimulating as always. He always asked, "Any question?" after presenting new material. But, very disappointed if nobody asked anything. I found that very cute of him. Wish I could take him again!!
Really cool guy. Have to get used to his accent, but he is very concerned with the learning of his students. The final exam was a bit tricky, so make sure you go to all of the lectures.
The TA you get makes or breaks the class. Luckily, I had an awesome and HOT TA that gave me really good grades on lab reports. Too bad Weizman isn't hot b/c he flirted w/ me too several times but it was pretty creepy. I'll take my TA any day. So yeah, if you're a beautiful girl just flirt w/ Weizman and flirt w/ your TA if they're the opposite sex.
This class puts your time management to the test. If you stay on top of all the reading and do decent on the quizzes and lab reports, your grade will come down to the final. Typically a difficult test, the final is based on all the aspects you've learned
This man has issues. Seriously. I'm still trying to figure out what they are (lack of g/f?). Won't answer e-mails with very reasonable questions. Helpfull, but weird. With him I'm becoming more and more convinced that lecturers are like 2nd-rate professors. I'm sure he's clear and helpful in class, but his issues remain unresolved ....
his lectures are very good and he is friendly but has inferiority complex - once you become a little bit threatening he is not a very pleasant person to deal with - i like how he goes around lab helping us do experiments - but he also gives bad advice sometimes so beware
He is the best teacher to take this class with. He is extremely helpful and cares a lot about his students. Every point counts in this class so dont underestimate those weekly quizzes.
Lectures are ok..he tries to be funny, but at least he gives you some advice on how to do the experiments. He helps out in office hours too (if you have time). The final was a ****, but hey, the class is curved. What makes and breaks your grade is your TA.
Weizman is a really nice guy (although this coming from a female student may not say much). Still, he is passionate about OCHEM and easy to contact when you need a little extra help. The grading of the lab reports falls completely to the discretion of the TA, so pray you get a good one or else your experience will be hell!
Make sure you have a cool TA...Dr. Weizman tries to make some lectures fun (he played a Stevie Wonder song at the last lecture). Much better than Chem 6BL. But WATCH OUT FOR THE FINAL!!!! Try to do previous exams...you'll see what we mean. I don't know how the grading normalization works...some TAs purposely grade lower, kinda messed up.
I loved this class! (okay, not the lab write ups) Weizman's lectures are very clear, concise, and he says funny things without realizing it. He's a very nice person, go to OH's. Just make sure to study for the final.
He's a nice guy althought sometimes seems anxious talking to students. In the end of class the means for each section are equalled - so make sure you do well on the final exam because you'll be competing against the whole class for a good grade. He doesn't word the exam problems very clearly and I lost points because i misunderstood some questions.
Weizman is awesome. Had Andro for a TA, the best TA I've had in 4 years at UCSD. I hate OCHEM, but I actually enjoyed this class. 7 Lab reports worth 350 points, 7 prelab quizzes worth 150 points, Final worth 200 points, 700 points total. If you're a bio major and have to suffer the wrath of OCHEM Lab, he's the one to take it with.
Averages for lab reports are VERY high (around 90%). The final is one hard exam. I went into the final with a 91% and afterwards, I dropped to an 83%. He does not prepare you well for the final, so study hard on your own (something I should have done more of).
His final is ridiculous. You can never be prepared for it; and the score distribution at the end clearly shows that 99% of students blindly guess. Out of ~10 questions on his final, getting one or two wrong decides whether or not you get an A. You can be wet-lab marvel, but that's not what this 'lab' class is about :-(.
The concepts discussed in lecture are interesting. However, what is covered in lecutre, is not the same as what is covered on the final. The final is pretty hard. My advice: after each lab, go to his office hours and just ask him the questions that will appear throughout the lab manuals, because this will help you to better understand the lab.
He lectures the way all profs ought to: conveying concepts and showing why they are useful to know. Your wet-lab experience really depends on the mercy of your TA, but make sure you study for the final. The practice test is wimpy compared to the real thing.
Weizman is a nice guy. He came into the labs regularly to see how we're doing and to help students w/ set ups. His final is ridiculous. Try to get some old ones from friends b/c he uses some of the same questions. Hope you get a good TA. Mine sucked and didn't explain anything, was not prepared, always late and grading was very arbitrary.
His final is definately hard.He avoids answering questions if he doesn't like you. Basically, if you have a goof TA like Andro, its okay. Know mechanisms, IR and NMR. 7 Quizzes which and 7 lab reports you want to do well in.
The Chem 87 (CSI: FACT AND FICTION) seminar is really interesting and easy. Attendance in mandatory, but the class is relaxed. Only one final paper is required, so it's an easy pass if you attend all the time. The class is interesting anyway and is a change from other classes.
OChem Lab is challenging if u don't keep up. Tips: don't buy the texts; go 2 Geisel & make copies from the manual; Survival Guide helpful but not essential; quizz difficulty varies depending on TA; lab reports, too; go 2 lecture & know @ least what he mentions in class; stay positive even if 1st lab report got a low score; do the practice finals
Excellent Prof. Take the lab reports and quizzes seriously, since they are most of the grade. The final's tough and basically determines your grade! Borrow some old finals to understand what's important to study. Also, make sure that you understand what you're doing in lab experiments! That is on the final, too!
The lectures are very good, and you will understand what you are doing in the lab. However, they do not prpeare you for the final at all. The class avg was 42%. But he curves, so get lots of old tests and study hard because it basically determines your grade. Ok prof, crazy final
Go to class and you will have a good idea of what to do in lab that week! and since he had those videos up helping you with the lab procedures itself! its pretty straight-forward! however, the finals was really tough and the experiments performed is not going to prepare you for the exam!
Great profesor. Make sure to go to class. Hard class but the curve was more than generous.
doesn't matter what ta you get, the curve was so smudged that you can pass with horrible work. i got basically zero credit on 2 our of 7 labs and i passed. Everyone has mentioned a hard final, yah it really has nothing to do with lab. i material from 140ab AND c and know them well for final.
He's an intelligent person who really wants you to do well. From what I gather, his class is much better than Ternansky's. The final is ridiculous and barely representative of the course. Don't bother with the practice final because the real thing is infinitely harder.
Study and know the concepts from the lab manual before starting a lab. Go to lecture: he will test on topics he covers in lecture. Final is crazy: highly emphasizes critical thinking. Best strategy for studying is knowing the concepts in the lab manual like the back of your hand and knowing why each step of the protocol is performed.
To be completely honest - this guy is a terrible professor. He expects his students to take a final exam that does not represent the material he lectures on. Basically, his test is on concepts you've gathered outside of his class. If you want to get the most out of your time - stay home during lecture and review your labs until you know them like i
Why is this guy teaching 143D? This course was started by Pfizer to prepare students for real industry jobs. Haime has never worked a day in industry-what a joke of a class-another political UCSD move.
Lab reports aren't difficult but the experiments were somewhat stressful. The final is pretty conceptually challenging. It's definitely not directly from the material; he makes you stretch your brain. Weizman is a really nice guy who wants you to learn and think. Go to office hours and understand the concepts - this will help you do well.
Grade largely depends on the TA. Lab reports are tedious and have a page limit. Going over means a large reduction in grade. Final is much harder than the practice posted. Professor has incomprehensible accent and was not helpful in office hours.
Your TA will have a big impact on your grade as they make the quizzes and grade your labs. The practice final is a few levels below the actual final which requires knowledge from 140a-c. It will make you stretch your brain. Make sure you completely understand why each step is performed in the labs.
Don't take him. His labs, are fairly do-able and even easier if you have a nice TA. If not, you're screwed. And you know what else will screw you over? His final. DO NOT TAKE.
The final for the honors class is ridiculous. Studying the labs is almost useless, and the lecture concepts were only tangentially tested. The remainder of your grade depends on your TA.
Professor Weizman is very helpful and approachable, especially since he likes to lecture 'actively' with his students by checking your work during class. He didn't follow the textbook very closely but it was ok since his tests are over how well you understand and can use the concepts you learn from lecture. grade dist.A+/A/A-/B+. hard to fail
GO TO OFFICE HOURS! you get lots of 1on1 time, he explains everything you need to know. everyone complains that the final is impossible but i easily got 2 std devs above the average without studying because i went to his office hours and he pretty much explained everything on the final. lab report grades depend on TAs so hope you get a good one.
The most work I've done for an A in any class, much more than 7L. All lab reports (with 5-page limit) were submitted to turnitin.com. Knowledge from 140A-C was more important for the final than memorizing the lab manual. Set aside a few hours to read the poorly written lab manual that was full of typos (some chemical names were even mispelled).
Go to office hours, because even if you get A's on every single lab report you will still fail the final by not going to his office hours. Final has nothing to do with the labs. Labs are super easy if you read them beforehand, as are the quizzes. Don't bother going to lecture because you can't uunderstand him.
Professor Weizman is an incredible professor. Absolutely the best professor I've had at this school; he teaches clearly and takes time to summarize what was just taught. He's always open to questions and his exams and quizzes are totally fair. With 140B, the work you put in was the grade you got. Would recommend this professor to any and everyone.
This class requires you to constantly not let up on any lab report or quiz if you want an A. The reason for that is every time you do bad, you get set back behind more and more students. Final was based alot on the techniques book for this class. Just don't find yourself studying ONLY concepts from his lecture.
Lectures are very hard to understand and does not go over all the major concepts of the labs. Thus, final was difficult since he did not teach most of the necessary concepts to solve the questions. Professor is hard to approach and manner is not conducive to learning.
Lectures were not very helpful and not relevant to 1 hour final. Final required solid chemical knowledge used in application to techniques that were practiced in lab. Must perform well in quizzes and lab reports. Curved against own section.
Dr. Weizman is the best professor I have had at UCSD. I audited 2 other OChem classes and Weizman was easily the best. He takes the time to explain concepts instead of rushing through them. 5 stars.
Weizman is hands down the best professor at UCSD. He is very nice and very approachable, has a no-nonsense and thorough attitude towards teaching. His tests are very fair and reflect the material taught in class. I would take him again for any chem class on campus :)
Professor Weizman is very helpful, approach him if you are having trouble with labs! The final is very similar to the practice final. I highly recommend the professor! One of the nicest ones I've ever had! Very approachable!!!
Weizman is hands down one of the best professors at UCSD. He is definitely not easy though; he makes you work very hard for your grade. Additionally he makes his lectures interesting by providing real world applications for organic chemistry. He is always available for office hours and is a very funny guy with genuine concern for his students.
He is the best chemistry professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. I am not a chem major but find myself contemplating taking more upper div chem classes solely because he'd be teaching them. His class is hard work, but he makes everything explicitly clear and refreshingly interesting. Take him if you can, highly recommended.
Do good in that lab because the final was very hard!! BUT DONT WORRy there is the CURVE that will save you!!
He is nice guy and enthusiastic about the material. However, he moved super slow at the beginning of the quarter. Then he rushed at the end. It was a poorly organized class. But I actually did learn a lot, he really pushes you. (Which makes sense since it's honors).
He was a clear and straightforward professor. He explained concepts in very simple terms to help us understand what was required to know in lab. However, the lab manual was not that organized and your grade was in the hands of your particular TA and a very hard final. There are lab reports/write ups for every single lab.
Great Professor, has a very different teaching style where you do exercises in class, which I thought was the perfect way to learn the material
Excellent professor. Doesn't have power points when he lectures. Gives you a lot of problems to help you learn and they do help. He's very nice and very approachable. Has some funny moments once in a while. If you dedicate enough time doing problems and understand the mechanisms, you will receive an A.
I loved his teaching style of giving examples then literally walking around the lecture hall and helping the students out while they're working. Still not a very easy class, but he's an excellent teacher who really cares about his students. Definitely recommend and very hilarious too.
This guy is terrible. Unfortunately, you can't avoid him, he has dominated the 143A class quart after quarter. He is useless in lecture and OH, literally, he covers any and everything but what you need to do well. The only prerequisite to the class is 140A, but do not be fooled, you need the entire series to understand what is going on. TERRIBLE.
Don't trust the prerequisite - you're going to need to have taken 140B to understand some of the experiments. Lecture might seem useless, but that's when he goes over potential questions that will be on the final. Expect to work your butt off to get an A. I recommend, but then again he's the only one who teaches 143A.
Decent professor. Accent is a bit strong. Course was slow to start and rushed at the end; a bit disorderly overall. Very challenging course (it's honors) but if you study hard, an A is very likely (his avg grade pt is >3.7). His class definitely scared people off though; less than half took CH, which was much less than previous years.
Decent professor. The experiments are pretty fun, but there is a bit of prelab work to keep up with. Absolutely go to lecture b/c he draws concepts for the final from his lectures. Wish I went to his OH more (he's not that mean as everyone says he is). Frank was the nicest and coolest TA ever!
By far one of the most helpful professors ever! He is always willing to help out in lab and answer questions. Labs were not that difficult as long as you read ahead. The final is a bit hard and you're totally pressed for time (you only get 50 minutes). Overall, not a horrible class!
He is awesome! dont complain on his accent! just go sit in the front and he is perfectly audible. He is clear on his concepts. took him for summer. one midterm (33%) and final (66%). U MUST GO TO CLASS. cant miss a day. go to discussions. do homework for at least 2 times and practice! you will be fine. tests are mostly from notes. take good notes!
Pros: Clear, approachable, knowledgeable, and funny. The class focuses heavily on mechanisms - how electrons move - rather than memorizing reactions. Tests are tough (avg was 50%) but there's a nice curve. I recommend him. Cons: obviously plays favorites and doesn't know how to nicely tell you that you're wrong.
Weizman has a very practical approach to teaching; he gives students problems during class to do. As long as you do the homework, and understand his notes very well while attending discussion and problem session, you are good to go! Just don't skip lecture. I definitely recommend him for Summer Session if he is offered.
He made me enjoy ochem. As long as you go to all the lectures you can expect B in the class. He very clearly states what should be known for the test. He teaches you the good old fashion concepts to understand NO MEMORIZING. i love him.
Best teacher I've had at UCSD. Clear lecturer and gives problems to do in class. Would definitely recommend taking during any summer section possible. If you attend lectures and discussion you will get at least a B.
His lectures were useless.
My favorite chem prof I have taken at UCSD so far. He really cares about his students and emphasizes fundamental concepts versus memorization. Go to office hours and mech clubs and do the hw and go over lecture and you should be prepared. Do not slack off but even if you don't do as well as you hope for, the curve is still good.
He covers everything he expects you to know in lecture. Lectures are just him working through examples which are really helpful. Focuses intensely on mechanisms and really understanding how the product is reached rather than memorization. Great prof for this class!
Dr. Weizman is one of the best profs I've ever met in UCSD. I hadn't known ochem can be so much fun and enjoyable until I had his lectures. Everything starts from the fundamentals and continues with logic deduction. He makes ochem a lot more approachable. He cares about his students and is willing to answer all the questions you have. RECOMMEND HIM
His lectures were disorganized and he has an accent. He did not talk about the fundamental concepts at all and turned the Lectures into discussion sessions while clearly, he is not as good as his TAs. AVOID!
I loved Prof Weizman! He understands the needs of students, and he teaches you accordingly. Had 2 midterms and 1 final. He doesn't post lectures on TED, so you must attend class and copy down notes. He makes you practice problems in class, which is SUPER helpful in learning o chem. Read the book, do problems, and go to discussion. Danielbest TA!
Weizman is not the best lecturer but he really cares that you understand the material. Tests were fair. STUDY THE LECTURE NOTES!! He will just write a bunch of mechanisms, and you are required to know them all for the exam. He gives practice tests which are very similar to the actual tests. The curve was very generous.
He has a thick accent, so it sometimes is hard to understand. But very sweet and approachable, and caring towards students' learning. He doesn't have lecture slides or podcasts, so you have to pay complete attention in class, especially cause it's a very hard class. His exams are slightly more application based than straight from the book.
By far my favorite professor at UCSD by far. Although, I was really hesitant about the class towards the beginning because there is no podcast or lecture notes, his teaching style really worked in my favor. His lectures consist of various examples and group work. Also, his practice exams are the same structure as the actual exams.
He is a really great professor! I really like his teaching style. He gives a lot of examples and leads us to think in an organic way. Since he doesn't provide slides, attend lectures. The accent would not be a problem after one or two class. Go over the notes and do the practice exam helps a lot with the tests. Discussion also helps a lot. Take him
Prof Weizman is a solid ochem prof. His lecture style is unique: he doesn't have slides but rather goes through mechanisms on his iPad that he writes out. During lecture, he'll write a problem and then give a few mins for the class to try and do it, with the TAs walking around to help. Good curve that will save you from the hard exams.
Pros: caring, nice, doable midterms, easy hw, he's funny! Cons: the final was much more difficult than midterms; his lecture is really more of a discussion and while some enjoyed it, I didn't; did not provide answer keys after finals were returned OR for the practice midterm! The HW was also much too easy compared to his exams. No weekend exams!
Professor Weidmann is a good professor for those who learn by seeing things done step by step instead of explained generally as most professors do. He does all the mechanisms you need to know for the exams in class. Lectures are not focused too much on the conceptual but he really allows you to understand how the mechanisms work and why they occur
Dr. Weizman is such a kind and knowledgable guy. The class is an intimidating class that moves at a fast pace no matter who you take it with, but this professor truly wants to see all of his students succeed. He's generous with time. Go to every lecture/discussion, seek help at office hours, try your best, and don't stress too much over low scores.
No Podcasts mandatory attendance. Never enjoyed lecture because they were slow and boring even though I took it for summer, yet, Id be lying to you if I said he was a bad prof. He cares so much, he understands class difficulty, class struggle and pushes you off bad habits. He is very transparent with what he expects. Excellent 1st choice prof.
I took chem 40B & 43A w/ him. He's honestly the most disorganized professor I've ever taken as a senior. He posts assignments last minute, talks about random stuff during lecture & confuses students on what's going to be on exams. Also, his grading across discussion sections isn't consistent, so you will not know how to do well even if u study hard
If you want a good grade in Ochem, you HAVE to work for it. This is not an easy class if all you do is the minimum. However, it is very possible to obtain a good grade in this class, given the effort. there's no challenge questions that he already hasn't put on his worksheets and a lot of the mechanisms he goes over are reflected on his tests.
Weizman is by far the best teacher I have ever had. I had a really rough time in Chem 40A and barely passed, but his class not only bridged gaps I had in my learning from previous courses but actually made me fall in love with organic chemistry & gain back confidence in myself that I haven't felt since hs! Hmwk is super helpful & tests are fair!
Prof Weizman is a very kind man. Lectures are definitely a bit out of the ordinary, ie. problems are written out step-by-step rather than use of powerpoint slides. Encourages students to work together. Provides worksheets to do during discussion. Course grade depends only on 3 exams. Exams hard; averages were 40% so don't trip over low scores:)
Great ochem professor. Practice exams are identical (in terms of problem type) to the real thing, however, actual test felt was more difficult, so do hard homework problems too. Accent is hard to understand at times, but he will spend time going over any material that students did not understand. He curves A LOT.
I'm in the online class right now. Worst class I have ever taken. Do no take him. You will need to work at least 24 hours on the lab he gives once a week all in a two day span. Definitely expect to pull all nighters or you won't pass.
This class has to be one of the worst classes I have taken online. His assignments for each lab are extremely difficult with TA's that are not allowed to help you, and no place in the textbook or lab manuals that you can look to for help when doing the assignments. Take anyone else, this class is so poorly run.
By far the worst online class I've taken at UCSD. Never thought that a class at UCSD could be so messy and disorganized. No clear grading policy and the averages for an OPEN NOTE assignment are around 50%. Resources are scarce and difficult to access. Discussions are mandatory and you're not allowed to attend other section times. NOTHING recorded.
I'm sure Weizman is a nice guy and a good in-class professor. But this online course is terrible! Please reconsider changing up your approach to an online lab. I do not feel as if I have learned anything and everything is up in the dark. Students are lost and struggling.
this class actually gives me nightmares every night. idk how a professor could be this unorganized. the professor teaches nothing and the lab sections are barely useful enough to help you do the assignments and midterm. being ran over a bus has to be less painful than being in this class. please just do yourself a favor and avoid this class.
I get what people are saying about the course but it isn't the worst. You definitely need to attend the lecture/ lab section and read/ watch the given procedures/ videos to gain an understanding of the material. You need to understand concepts and apply it rather than just finding it in the text for the assignments. It'll be hard but it's doable.
This class was extremely difficult and not doable. The level of work he expects us to do is not compliant with a lower division class. Yeah organic chemistry is hard but this class and the way it was run made it actually impossible to learn anything. The TA's didn't help, the textbook barely helped, the lecture was useless.
Assignments take an average of 40 hours each. When students went to office hours to complain, he said it's because we're too stupid to comprehend the material.
lol i think i would much rather drink bleach than take this class again tbh, to be fair he's right we should totally use Google on our assignments bc we pay for Google not his teaching, and ugh how dare we lie and say we work 50+ hours on his assignments when he knows we definitely only spend 3-4 hours on 33 questions. class is a health liability.
When I took 40B Weizman was my fav prof, that's also why I chose him for 43A. However, this class REALLY disappointed me. The TAs are not responsive to emails and just ask us to search everything on Google, the resources are limited and unavailable. Mostly, struggle with assignments because their hardness contrasts the lack of help and resources.
This is honestly the worst class Ive ever taken, both in person and online. Grading is extremely inconsistent, and theres absolutely no structure or organization in the class. The professor gave us problems on things he never taught, and when asked about it, tells us to use google. Like we pay thousands of dollars for google to teach us. :/
My worst class experience at UCSD. We're given 50 minutes of lecture w/ prof and an hour with a TA for the whole week (that just reviewed lecture). Then we get an assignment with content we've never before. Told to just Google? Best part was when prof said we had to come to OH for help (not email), but OH are only held after the assignment is due.
If you want to do well in this class, you need to give up other classes, sleep, job, and everything else. Tried to express our exhaustion to professor, got rejected and got told "we just don't know the material well enough". This is the toughest and most time-consuming lab and course I've ever taken. Be prepared to be stressed and frustrated.
I heard good things about him as a professor so I was excited to take this class but it was actually my worst online class experience ever. The class was so disorganized and took up so much extra time trying to study only to be lost during the actual assignment. I used google way more as a resource than lectures, textbooks, TAs, and even the prof
Class has been an actual nightmare. Students are trying to contact the university for any assistance because prof is currently refusing to read/respond to emails. Don't think the university will do anything because UCSD does not care about its students. Even though at least half the class is running on no sleep, are sick, and having anxiety attacks
The worst class I have ever taken at UCSD. Never has a class taken such a toll on my mental health. So disorganized. We are provided with little guidance or information but at the same time are expected to perform extremely well on very difficult assignments. I spend 40+ hrs on assignments. This is coming from someone who did well in ochem.
Took 40B with him and was impressed so I came back to learn from him again with 43A. HUGE MISTAKE. This class takes the life out of me with assignments (30+hours). Poor communication among TAs (nobody knows anything). Only 2 hrs of structured class a week yet such big expectations on the assignments. I did not pay money for the internet to teach me
Rude, careless are a few things to call him. He thinks his students has him only for a class. Teaches a topic and make it look like its doable/not bad. Then gives assignments that are don't represent what is being taught. TA's unresponsive. Tells his students to "use google" . Takes an absolute toll on mental health. Forget what sleep is. AVOID!
I found him to be clear and an overall good professor. Coming from Albizati in 40A I didn't find him as organized, but overall pretty good. Tests were HARD, with averages in the 50s, but there was a larger curve than I expected. Anyway what really made this class was the TA Karol, AMAZING and kind, super clear. Helped summarize everything each week
Weizman is one of the worst professors I have ever taken as a third year at UCSD. Even though he may curve the class, his lectures have nothing to do with the assignments, the TAs are great but the assignment still goes over things we didn't even learn. The last assignment being about a research paper is a joke since we learned absolutely nothing.
Most people go into a prof's OH expecting to have questions answered. Weizmann is like... here are some practice problems, now let us struggle some more. That was honestly a very interesting experience, I would definitely recommend going to his OH just for the extra practice. Extremely hard exams but he curves.
He's a pretty nice guy. Solid lecturer. Tests are hard. Has office hours. Does not provide answers to practice exams outside of Office Hours, so if you can't make those you don't get answers. Overall: I'd take him again, but that's because I don't know if the other Ochem professors are any better.
Professor Weizman's class was very fair. He is one of the few (or only) professors who gives credit for homework, which accounts for 20% of your grade (equivalent to 1 exam)! The exams were also very similar to the practice exams. He was exceptionally generous with the curve at the end of the quarter :-)
Professor Weizman had a lot of hype when I was taking ochem, but attending his office hours for help was a nightmare. He does not help you bridge the gaps in your understanding and instead says you're not going to be successful. Derogatory. Was a complete 180 because he seemed so nice during lecture. His tests are also hard - avoid at all costs!
While attendance is not mandatory, you have to go to class to understand the material to be able to get feedback on in-class practice problems from him and the TA's. I would highly recommend going to his office hours consistently to work on homework. The tests are difficult, but the practice exams and problems sets show you exactly what you need.
AVOID THIS PROF LIKE THE PLAGUE. I can't express how frustrated I am with his choice of teaching style and indifferent mannerism when expected to foster a productive learning environment. Limited practice material and irrelevant lecture context (was not tested), unclear expectations for exams and lab reports, inaccessibility, and more. THE WORST.
Weizman is the GOAT of 40B. His lectures are interesting and helpful; he often gives example problems in class and draws out the mechanisms to help students practice. His tests are hard but fair; students are only tested on content covered in lecture. He and his TAs are active on Piazza and they offer office hours frequently. Lectures are recorded.
His tests are terribly inconsistent and do not reflect the material he teaches in class. He is incredibly disorganized and doesn't focus on super specific details in lecture, more on the overall reaction which is great! BUT he then turns around on the tests and focuses on the tiny exact details. Rude and combative in office hours, AVOID HIM!
He is a great professor very knowledgeable and super intelligent while being extremely kind, fun, and modest. Knows how to teach concepts really well and provides problems that help critical thinking. For his class if you try to understand and not memorize you will do fine. Best professor I have had!
I really enjoyed his class! I recommend attending lectures as many practice problems are provided. The exams are not easy but doable if you practice and read!
Weizman's lectures are engaging and he provides helpful in-class practice. While the tests are challenging, he offers ample support through office hours and Piazza. unstuck study complemented my studies well. Overall, a solid professor if you're willing to put in the work.
His lectures are very engaging and he is a great teacher. Going to lecture is highly recommended because of how much he values practicing problems as soon as you learn the concept. He is probably the best professor I've had at UC San Diego.
good profesor
My personal experience with Dr. Weizman is probably not typical but he refused to implement my OSD accommodations, so if you have these and want to use them I'd recommend a different professor. Class was relatively easy and exams reflect lecture materials. Office hours are a mess so I'd suggest attending every TA lead section you can.
Weizman was an amazing professor. His dedication to his students is present in his lectures; with hands-on learning that really helped me understand the concepts. Would highly recommend going to lecture, attending all TA sections, and reading the textbook. The midterms and finals felt like a good representation of the content as well.
Dr. Weizman was an amazing professor, he taught concepts so well and was really committed to ensuring students knew material. Problem sets are hard but discussion sessions helped with them greatly. SI sessions were a must and helped me earn that A.
Hardest class you'll ever take. He expects you to come in to the class already knowing the reaction mechanisms without teaching you the fundamentals. Basically have to teach the class to yourself. Would not recommend.
It's easy to get lost in 40B and sometimes he doesn't do a great job of helping students navigate the big picture of the material he is teaching. However, I found that once you are adjusted to what is going on, his teaching style is concise and he sets you up with everything that you need to be successful on the exams.
terrible. avoid at all costs.
Lecture is honestly hit-or-miss on if it's helpful to you since it goes so fast; would definitely go to discussion and SI sections since they reinforced the topic better than lecture + SI gives more practice than the prof; tests decently reflected what was taught except somethings on final kind of came out of a left-field; gets to know his students
Honestly, I'd recommend this professor. The class is tough, and at one point, I really thought I'd fail and honestly, I probably should have. But there is wiggle room. I did horribly on my first two exams (scoring below the average), but I significantly improved on the final and still ended up with a B!
I highly recommend taking OCHEM with Professor Weizman. He is a great lecturer who will only test you on concepts taught in lecture, strives to make the lectures engaging, and gives homework that reflects the material well. OCHEM is a challenging course regardless of who you take it with, but it's nice to have a professor like Weizman who cares.
