A very knowledgeable TA and he cares about our success. He gave too many problems in class and it can be a little overwhelming sometimes.
He's just beyond the average human in every way.
Haiyu explained things very clearly. He was always very prepared and made going to the recitation worthwhile. He was also very funny, which kept the students awake. Hands down the best TA I have ever had so far. Good luck to you, Haiyu!
This man's consistent clear explanations and niceness is the reason I am doing well in discrete math. He will sit with you and do problems even after recitation is over until you understand everything
Best TA at Tech. Very patient. He is the reason I survived the course.
All of his assessments were much harder than the material use to prepare. He moves very fast so it's hard to catch up if you don't understand a concept. He was very approachable and would make time to talk with you outside of class if you asked him. Very hard class in terms of a core math requirement.
One of the best math teachers I've had at GT. Really accessible, friendly, and helpful (even when people take advantage of office hours to have him walk them through the homework, right before it's due).
Gave a lot of extra credit (20-10-10 points on the tests and final). Homeworks were pretty difficult, but the test questions were much easier. Took several test/quiz questions from homework or in-class examples. Not always the clearest lecturer, and made mistakes, but had a lot of office hours.
Best math teacher I have had at Tech! He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Go to his office hours!
Hardest class I've taken at Tech. Haiyu provides almost no resources to help you succeed. Homeworks are very difficult, often don't correlate to the material he covers in class. His lectures are not engaging and he spends most of the time talking to the board. Test's are very proof and notation heavy, with very little partial credit awarded.
No matter who you take this is a difficult class. Haiyu (yes everyone calls him by his first name) is a very caring teacher. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He will work out homework problems with you. If you don't understand a concept, he will explain it until it makes sense. He will answer dumb questions without making you feel dumb for asking them.
When he said the course was fast-faced in his syllabus, he was not kidding. If you do not go to class for a week, it feels like he is speaking a completely different language. His notes are very good, probably some of the best for the classes I have taken at GT. Oh, definitely go to his office hours, they are extremely helpful.
Praise the curve! This class was tough, and you have to work for your grade. Homeworks cover future material as on what you have already learned, which can make them tough. He also makes up his own problems. His lectures are high paced. He is very helpful in officehours, he also wants to help you understand the material. The class was a struggle.
let's start by saying that this man began a Finite Math class (one of the easiest math classes at Tech) by saying "I anticipate this class will be harder than linear algebra and differential equations" and he didn't lie. he doesn't teach well, he's boring, and if you ask him questions, he doesn't know how to explain answers
I thought he was fine, and it was also his first semester teaching this course. The first test was harder than we prepared for but he ended up curving it and gave use harder practice problems for future tests/made them easier. Our last two tests had a lot of problems we had seen before. He does do learning catalytics to check attendance.
The first test was pretty rough. However, Hiayu made sure later tests and quizzes were more doable. You can tell he really cares about students success and he is very helpful during his office hours. Hiayu, you are a great teacher! Dont let the students bully you!
The class started out to be hard but he realized that students weren't doing too well and changed the quizzes and tests to be more practical and in line to what we were learning. Overall, I learned a lot in this class and it wasn't too difficult. Some homework questions do pop up in the tests and quizzes so do your homework.
Probably the hardest math class I have taken at tech. If you do all his homework and understand what you are doing, tests are quite manageable. Oh yea, for your own sanity, don't cram for his tests!
MATH 3215 was a very difficult class for me. Through it, though, Professor Zou was tremendously understanding and responsive, and made lectures not only interesting and enjoyable, but also hilarious and personable at times. Would highly recommend the professor, even though I personally disliked the subject.
Absolutely loved him :) he's super caring and flexible about things if you talk to him. The grades are fair and if you attend/watch all his lectures, everything is verys straight forward, but if it's not, he's super willing to answer any questions you may have. Highly recommend
Good professor if you really want to learn more about prob and stats. Super logical lectures and explainations. You will even learn t-distribution and chi-square which I thought will appear in 4-level math course. Go ahead and choose him if stats is important for your career in the future! Don't choose him if you just want an easy A.
Really tough class, even though he kinda tells you what will be on the tests. His study guides are very helpful and he is pretty accessible during office hours. Online class format is a struggle but if you go to his lectures and follow through, you should do just fine.
Haiyu is such a great teacher! He is super approachable and very good at explaining seemingly difficult concepts. Watching him set up problems has helped me greatly in proving things. I am glad that I signed up for the honor version of Linear Algebra as my first math course. I can't wait to see what other interesting classes Teach has to offer!
Haiyu was my TA in MATH1564 and really helped me do well in the class. I did not understand much in lectures and it was his studio sessions and practice problems that helped me grasp linear. He was the only TA in the class of like 50-60 people and he did a great job of helping everyone.
He's a good person, but his grader, Aryan Mittal, was extremely difficult and had averages of F's on both exams. Half of the class dropped, so Haiyu made the second half crazy easy, which passed everyone. Haiyu himself has memorized most of the textbook, and writes the theorems on the board, and does a few examples per class, decent lecturer.
Don't take him if you are not ready to work. If you do decide to take him, your hard work will be rewarded. His lectures were packed with materal which made me feel that I learned a lot. I appreciate that he had his office hours right after class. I do wish he could go over more stats.
He taught difficult content very clearly and provided us with helpful resources to practice.
Prof. Zou is extremely personable, and an amazing lecturer and teacher. I can't explain it, you have to take it for yourself. hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. The class is challenging and will challenge your way of thinking, but it's so worth it and enjoyable and, dare I say, fun.
Easy class. He understands that this is not stem math and makes his teaching super clear. He's really generous and flexible on midterms and quizzes. you can drop your lowest quiz. Hes a great math prof and will listen to any reccs or ideas. Also if you say like 1 think he will change half the exam to what you want.
Prof. Zou is excellent at teaching and cares about his students. This course is hard for students who did not have previous exposure to calculus. The lectures are interesting and difficult material is simplified well. Though I find the tests and quizzes to be quite challenging so I hope that the final will be doable.
Prof Haiyu is the GOAT!
This is an insanely hard class but Prof Zou makes it so much better. He cares about his students, has a sense of humor, and can explain concepts simply. It will be hard to find a professor better than Haiyu.
I wouldn't take this class if you don't truly love math; the subject matter is very hard and takes much work to comprehend. If you just need a linear algebra credit, take 1553/4, trust me. However, that is not to attack Haiyu, there is no one who could teach this topic better than he did. He is caring, personable, funny, and generous with grading.
The class is tough, but Professor Zou is funny and genuinely enjoys teaching his students. His lectures are worthwhile to attend, and he often interjects long and arduous proofs with humourous tales. He is always available and listens to the students' concerns. He made this semester amazing.
Though I find this course difficult and tests can be sometimes challenging; for the first time in my life I enjoyed taking a math class. Professor Zou is an amazing lecturer with a great sense of humor. I did not skip a single lecture and note that this class was at 8am. Prof Zou is also very caring and was willing to schedule extra Office hours
Professor Zou has been one my favorite professors by far. I personally found his class to be easy simply by attending lectures and participating in studio, plus he gives a study guide before every examine that is almost identical to the test. Some students complained his class was too hard, but surprise surprise, I never saw them once in lecture.
Words simply cannot describe how amazing this man is, you just have to take him. He's a rare professor because he is not only extremely intelligent but knows how to communicate his genius to students who I found are often quite stupid to put it frankly. If you can't crack his class you shouldn't be at Georgia Tech, try UGA.
If you go to all his lectures and TAs' studios, you get 4 extra credits, almost half a letter grade. That's how much Dr. Zou wants you to pass his class. His study guides tell you EVERYTHING that will be on the exam, which is why I finished the final in less than half the alotted time. There's people complaining how hard the class is? smdh.
I learned so much from Prof. Haiyu's class which allows me to see math as a completely different subject compared with what I did in HS. It is very time-consuming but no regrets here. I know I will miss this semester.
He's a great professor. All of the resources available made it hard to outright fail the class. His lectures and studio work was also helpful in learning. This class taught very surface level calc 1 2 and 3, so I get why it's hard for some people if they aren't familiar with calculus already. His study guides are exactly the same as the exams.
This class is definitely difficult! That being said, Haiyu is an amazing teacher. His office hours are extremely helpful and he gives some opportunities for extra credit. Going to lecture is crucial. Hws are graded easily but tests are graded harshly.
If you go to lectures and studios, it is easy to pass this class. Professor Zou was engaged with his students and responded to emails quickly. He communicates what to expect on exams. The first half of the semester was much easier than the second half of the semester. The final exam was much harder than any other quizzes or exams.
As I wanted to know the "why"s of linear algebra, Haiyu couldn't have done a better job. He is an engaging and passionate lecturer, interjects with jokes, and clearly cares about his students. The class was rigorous and challenging, but he is fair in assessment and I've learned so much. Truly a great professor, I only wish I could take him again.
The content was difficult and moved fairly quickly, but when Haiyu says things, they just get understood. He made me actually understand the essence of math and want to take more math. He's also just a great guy and gave everyone cookies during our final.
Professor Zou is the best!! He is super enthusiastic about the subject and you can tell that he really loves teaching it. Professor Zou also cares a lot about his students and holds many office hours sessions. The class is extremely difficult and mostly proof based. Be ready to put in a lot of time studying but Professor Zou makes it worth it!
Probably the best math instructor I have ever had. MATH 1564 is hard (especially if you have never taken a proof-based math class before), but Haiyu's lectures were excellent. He is very helpful if you ask him a question after class or in office hours (maybe a little too helpful when it comes to homework).
I love Professor Haiyu! He gives wonderful lectures, and he cares about his students(he answers all the questions you ask in class or after class). Homework is heavy but meaningful, tests are hard but fair. It's is a challenging class, but if you love math and find that Prof. Haiyu will be teaching, then TAKE IT! You'll learn more than "a lot"!
Bro is just one hell of a specimen.
He is a very good lecturer and is perfect for college students. He is incredibly intelligent and always willing to help. Just talk to him every now and then. If you try, you will do well.
Haiyu is prob one of the best math professors at GT. Explains things really well. Quizzes and tests can be hard but he gives lots of resources and hws give up to 6% EC. Def listens to feedback. Early grading was very harsh but def changed after receiving feedback. Overall very enjoyable course and feel like I actually learned a lot.
Zou is a funny and a great caring teacher but hard. Go to class or you will definitely get behind, and homeworks and tests are graded pretty ruthlessly. I ended up with an A as he curves the class at the end, but don't pick him if you want an easy A. Definitely made statistics more interesting for me!
I took math 1564 with him as well. By that time he was the TA for 1564. So much better than the professor. Explains concepts so much more clearer. For math 3670, he does some review every class, but you still need to go to class. He is definitely the best professor for 1564 and intro to stats/prob. Just take him, you won't regret, promise
For a statistician, this guy loves to yap and seldom relies on visuals. If your class is quiet, maybe it's because nobody understands what is going on, you don't have to take it as a personal affront to you. If you want students to engage, make your lectures engaging. If you want to do well in this class, just do the HW.
You have a test every other week in the class. But his lectures are very good and he is always open for questions outside of class. He really cares about his students.
Haiyu is extremely kind, but his lecture style is TERRIBLE. I found his lectures boring, unclear, and hard to engage with, which sucked bc his slides are also USELESS for review as he does all of his teaching on the whiteboard. I got a B bc of youtube, textbooks, and a curve. This class is RIDICULOUSLY difficult, especially bc of how he teaches it.
This course is easy if you already learned calculus in high school (AB). If you did not, it is very challenging because he goes through the material very quickly and the lectures are pretty unengaging. He is very good at answering questions and is a nice guy overall. The midterm/final was very similar to the study guides.
Professor Zou is a great professor. He has a clear voice and communication style. Just as good as watching a YouTube video and he goes through every step. I am taking him again for finite.
Prof Zou will make you laugh in every lecture, and found a way to make probability fun. He is extremely clear, and the tests are based on the content on the study guides. Attendance is extra credit, and many tests had extra credit, or questions that wouldnt be graded. Some homework (that you pay $90 to access) but overall solid class and prof.
I really enjoyed his class! The lectures were pretty engaging and easy to understand. I'd say the math wasn't that bad, but I know a lot of people who struggled with it. Quiz after every lecture for participation and homework 2x a week. Worksheets and study guides were very helpful. Great professor! (don't email, he won't answer. Go to OH lol)
Very good professor, just show up to class and take notes and the class should be an easy A.
Easy material so easy A, but the prof frequently waited until the last minute to post homework and made mistakes on study guides- he would make a mistake, someone would point it out, he would tell them they're wrong, then they would take the test, get that question wrong, point it out to him, and he'd say "we did a problem like this in class".
His lecture style is extremely boring and unengaging. I took AP Calc / IB Math in high school and that is the main reason I understood what was going on. Studios / lectures are extra credit which helps. Def go to studio, it's a lot easier to learn content. Exams / quizzes are identical to studio worksheets and study guides. H
I love him.An amazing teacher who really cares about his students understanding the material. Assigns homework pretty much every week/lecture but they really do cover the material and help you. Provides EC that is very beneficial in the end. Also really funny and goofy. if you fall asleep during his lecture, good luck.makes math fun but to a limit
Great, funny guy who understands the class is filled with non-STEM majors and teaches curriculum accordingly. Pearson homework sucked, but exams were easy if you did study guides. Goes fast during lectures, but overall relatively simple to follow. Office hours were helpful for additional questions. Attendance = extra credit.
If you have previous experience with calculus you should be fine, but this class is not friendly to those who have little to no experience. Moves very quickly and his lectures are very uninteresting. Also very hard to reach outside of class, will take days or weeks to respond to emails.
Much better at teaching this class (1711) than 1712, the lectures are much more engaging and easier to grasp. The homework is very helpful in learning the content but he often teaches it in a different way. Class gets easier as the semester goes along.
Doesn't respond to emails ever
He didn't put grades in the gradebook so I never knew what my grade was (even going into the final). He would claim that he would add things to canvas and then NEVER do it or do it so late that it didn't matter anymore. He doesn't respond to emails in a timely manner. I went into the final blind bc I didn't know my grade.
Haiyu is amazing. I had him for a total of 2 math classes, and I would absolutely take another math class with him.
This class was EXTREMELY difficult if you have never taken a calculus class. I went into my exam blind because of his lack of awareness of putting in grades. The syllabus quiz was given 6 weeks into the course. NEVER responds to emails in a timely manners, and also lies in emails. You will feel stupid when asking him questions.
I have taken Zou for 1711 and 1712. I received a letter grade higher than expected both times, and I am extremely grateful (math is not my strong suit). This class is difficult, however Zou is the best teacher you can have. This class is graded by 3 exams + final, 4 quizzes, and homework. Attendance is Extra Credit.
You can still succeed if math isn't your strong suit, but this class is easy for some and hard for others. Starts off fairly easy but kind of ramps up near the end. The studio worksheet problems show up on the quizzes and sometimes the exams. Partial credit given on exams, 4 extra points available for final grade. Won't respond to emails.
Professor Zou does a great job of explaining topics in a simple and understandable way. Although, attendence isn't required (outside of quiz days), I highly recommend coming to class. Homeworks are not required, but are good for midterm practice and earn you extra credit. Quizzes are not bad and midterms are fair.
The exams varied a lot in difficulty the first exam average score was like a B second a D and final a C. He ended up curving in the end. He provided homework assignments that could be used to add up to six points onto your final grade. Overall great guy.
Oh my gosh, I lost zell miller because of him, This class has HEAVY grade deflation. the whole class is VERY midterm heavy its literally worth HALF UR GRADE.
He is a mid professor, my TA was awful which made this class more difficult than necessary. The grade inflation at the end of the semester goes crazy with homework and extra credit, so most people end with an A or B. 2 weekly homework and if you go to all the studios + lectures you get extra credit. Not the worst ever, but doable with some effort
Lectures are fine, very fast-paced. Doesn't fully answer questions when you ask, just reiterates the answer he got. TA was terrible, didn't explain answers to worksheets well. I failed the first midterm (hardest one) and never seemed to recover (test heavy course). Will ask you to simplify difficult fractions in a short amount of time (EX: 9.5/5).
Haiyu is a great professor for how deceptively hard 1712 is. While bad at responding to emails, he's very nice in his office hours and grades fairly. You'll need to put in more effort than you think and get extra support to do well in this class, and to accomplish that, Haiyu is a great prof. to get there.
the goat for 1711 or 1712! yes the classes are hard, but he is by far the best person to take them with. He is funny and engaging in lectures and gives lots of extra credit for going to class and studio
i suck at math, but i loved Mr. Zou as a prof. He is funny and a very good teacher. Tests are fair and I always did better than expected (got -.6 buses on one question and covered the tests in tear stains but got an 80). the hw and studio questions def relate to exams and quizzes.
Honestly thought this class was great! You can finesse some of the exams by studying the day before if you go to studio and lecture!
Actually the first time that I understood math! As long as you go over the midterm study guides and studio worksheets, you will most likely get an A.
Class is very test heavy, but overall it was an easy class! Lectures jump around a bunch of different math topics and he posts the slides on Canvas if you miss them. Haiyu never hesitated to answer questions or give help if someone was confused. Make sure you go to studio, you'll get 1-2 extra credit points!
