funny, but not fun
Very funny but tough with tests

Hard tests, not fun but sometimes funny
very hard class, difficult tests, prof is humorous; but material is not great!
easy and funny, go to the S.I. session and you'll get an A
don't have to go to class, he says ok
Go to SI or don't take the course, you will fail his class if you don't
GO TO SI!!!
do the reading and study the study guides... and not problems. nice guy too
Very hard class! Go to SI!
Interesting class, go to SI, take notes, there is no reason you should not get a
No Comments
He was funny but class was hard and kind of pointless. Make sure to go to SI.
says okay countless times, more than 1000 times during a given 80 minute class
Funny, good teacher :D
He's so FUNNY!!! I love going to the class to listen to his lectures.

He is not a teacher, he dictates from the book, there is no point in going to class, go to the SI session and you will pass.
hard to understand at times...very hard tests. Lots of information to remember. Kinda funny tho.
Sucks, horrible english, hard tests, bad jokes
Hilarious guy. SI Sessions do help, though.
He is fun to listen to, but don'e expect to learn from the lecture. Going to SI sessions though will get you a good grade for sure
Good teacher, but need to attend SI sessions.
I LOVE HAJIME OTANI!!! This class was awesome. He is a very knowledgable professor and knows a lot about his field. Tests were difficult, but I would definitely take another one of his classes in an instant!
hard tests...go to SI
go to class to laugh and go to SI sessions to get an A
Class is a breeze...go to SI if you want to get good grades on tests.
He's funny, lectures are very interesting.
Funny guy, but a 100 level class does not need to take up so much studying time...tests are never over things you learn in class!
Funny guy, one of the easier foreign instructors to understand. The tests are pretty hard, but if you go to SI sessions(or at least the one right before the test), you should do well.
go to the SI sessions they help a lot!
Hard to understand, but funny when you can. Go to SI, they help. One thing I didn't like was the fact that he would lecture on a group of chapters, tell us to read a different group of chapters, and then test us on a completely different group.
Best Forgien teacher I have had yet. SI sessions are most important, class is fun, Hajime is funny. No need to read for tests, study the study guide for si and you will get an A. When i went I got and A when I didn't go to SI, I got a d, you decide....
He skipped around alot. Needed to read the book, which I did, and studied the sheets and still managed to get a D!
I did ****ty on exams and still got an A. Hajime is so quirky. The class was boring as hell, but his silly jokes cracked my **** up.
class is borring zzzz. if you want a passing grade just go to the si. dont bother with the class just go to the si and test. will learn nothin from the class
Class with him ain't so bad, get him to start telling jokes about him as a child and his drinking habits and you will get a good laugh. Otherwise SI is a must, class is no point except for his jokes.
it is a hard class but he is pretty funny and tries to make it as interesting as possible. He is a good guy and willing to help. The class sucks no matter what so I suggest taking him.
He's such a funny guy and has so many jokes and stories to share. His tests are pretty hard. You need to read the book and go to lecture. There needs to be a SI for this class but there isnt. Take advantage of his extra credit- it helps!!
One time in class we counted how many times he said "okay" and he said it 439 times!!! Very cute though!
He is funny, but impatient with computers. Good class, you learn a lot, but he also does do everything for you pretty much.
Hajime is great, I never read the book and ended up with an A-,he gives lots of example and they tend to be memorable, if you print off the notes and then write in the examples you have a great study guide. Also 5% extra credit can bring any grade up lots.
A LITTLE HARD TO UNDERSTAND, I HAD TO DROP THE CLASS BECAUSE I WAS FAILING. HE DOES NOT REALLY EXPLAIN THINGS THAT WELL!
I have over 100% in the class right now. Probably one of the best professors to have for that class. He gives you hella extra credit too. I highly recommend taking PSY 100 with Hajime. His exams really arent as hard as people think,as long as you study
this class was ok. it's sooo boring but he'll crack you up. the test's are hard. YOU MUST STUDY
Tests are okay if you read the chapters in the book. You can get away without going to class except on test days. You get a chance to do extra credit experiments.
Hajime is ok. He is pretty funny, and sometimes gets off track. Bottom line: you will do good if you study for tests and go to the lectures. Otherwise, you're screwed.
Oneof my all time favorites. great man.
I really liked this class. It was super easy b/c I went to all the SI sessions. If I wouldn't have gone to them, then it would have been much harder. I recommend going to these SI sessions and you will do great in the class.
Test are very difficult. Told class at the beginning of semester that this class is Very challenging and we all will need the extra credit points IF we wanted a good grade. Spent hours studying and still got a C +. Good luck! He's a nice guy though.
Hard to understand at times, still, funny and knows how to keep students awake!
SUPER FUNNY! He makes psychology fun! He cracks me up every class. It is totally worth going to class, just to laugh. It's a good time!
Hajime is funny.. sometimes offensive with all of his depression comments, but overall ths class is real fun. The tests are real hard tho if you dont study enough.
test are very hard and hard to understand. He'll make you laugh though.
Cracks a lot of jokes...most are just strange. He's a nice guy. goes off on tangents a lot, but does cover most of the material. Study for tests!
He is such a funny guy. He makes psychology fun and a blast to attend. I've never fallen asleep in his class because there's not a moment where he bores me.
He was really really funny, but his tests were crazy. You never know what to study because his tests were not over the lectures or book. He's a great guy though.
TESTS ARE WAY TO HARD definitly confusing and it is not from the book. Maybe you need your helpers help make the tests so there not so hard. Your the hardest funnest psyc teacher at central.
Funny guy...but not an interesting class. Study hard for the tests because they are hard as hell!!! I don't recommend him.
he is a very good professor! he eplains things well and he is funny. the tests arn't too hard or too easy, as long as you study you are gloden.
His tests are sooo hard! It's like he doesn't put material from the study guides on his tests. Here's a tip: go to the review sessions held by his GA's, they know more than he does!
Hajime is hilarious. He knows what he's talking about but some people have trouble with tests because they didnt take the time to study or listen to all of the examples in class. You can tell he loves to teach. Take Hajime's classes
Hajime is a funny guy no doubt about that. He gives awesome notes as well. The only that sucks is his tests. I have gone to all of his classes, all of his study sessions, and study my butt off, and still don't do good on his tests.
This class i beleive is awsome. He is a very good teacher and is halarious.I studied his work sheets and got all A's on his tests. He is japanese obviously (hisname)so sometimes he says words funny which makes me laugh alone and his jokes help too.Overall good class and easy if you do ur work.TAKE HIM
He is a funny man! Lectures suck because you take a ton of notes. Tests are hard too, I attended all of the lectures and I still didn't do as well as I wanted. You have to study had for the exams.
Very funny guy. Class is very easy if you go and take notes and study for the tests. If not, your grade will suffer. Take the class, Otani is a cool guy.
Hajime was a good teacher and he was very funny. He gave helpful examples to help you understand. The essay part of his test was the hardest, but if you read your book and look over your notes you can pass.
He is a very funny guy.
Awesome guy, accent is cool, and not hard to understand at all. Funny too. Class is still kinda hard tho.
OMG!!!!! So so hard, do not take this class. some extra credit but test are impossible.
Cool guy, but his tests are really tough. The class pretty much consists of taking notes, which is cool because Hajime always has cool stories to talk about. If you take his class, I highly recommend his after-class reviews and doing the review sheets that he posts online.
Very funny guy. Tests are a killer though.
He is a really nice guy, but his tests are absolutely impossible. I get a b and am about 10th out of over a hundred people. Every test has been curved. He expects you to read the text book at least 3 times. Nice guy, but very tough class.
Ugh...he is funny at first but his jokes are lame and it's pointless to go to lecture. Read the book and you'll be fine. Tests are hard. Find a different teacher or a different subject.
The teacher is cool, but his class is hard as hell, you have to study your ass off to get a decent grade. he grades test on a curve so helps you out a lot
Funny guy. Study your notes and do the study guide he posts online. Class is tough, but not impossible. Just study hard. Be able to know exampls and situations and you will be fine. Fin class, he has good stories to go along with the lecture. Be prepared to take a lot of notes.
Hard class. As long as you take notes and do his study guide you will be fine but DO THE STUDY GUIDE. I didn't for the first two tests and did really bad but after that everything went great once I did them!
Hajime is a good professor however you have to pay attention and go to class all the time and this will be an easy class for you. He also has a sense of humor so he lightens the mood once in awhile.
I should have taken psych in high school, that probably would have helped me. but...the tests are pretty hard, he gives you a study guide and you gotta go find stuff in the book. He's super funny, so at least class isn't boring. Your grade is based on the average of your 5 tests and a final.
He is really funny, but he tends to get off topic... His exams are extremely hard and the essays are worse... I wouldn't take him again and I have had psych in high school.
Otani's lectures were boring. I had a hard time taking notes and listening. I went to class everyday but I felt like I did better when I read the chapters and did the reviews on my own. His website is very helpful but otherwiser you're on your own.
He is funny, but goes off topic too much. Does pretty good notes but doesn't cover all the material.
He defiantely made me laugh, but he does go of subject a little too much. He's tests weren't too hard, but definately wasn't easy.
Had a great sense of humor but found himself more funny then any of his students. I thought the class was extremely straight forward if you study for the tests and do the reading you'll sail through the class. Also do his extra credit. He curves tests and has decent notes. Easy class!
VERY funny guy. Related personal experiences to make it more interesting.
sucks, he doesnt know how to teach and he get off topic all the time. He is only funny for the first few days then he get boaring
Hajime is the funniest guy ever! He gets amused by his own jokes too. Went over the material very well, providing anecdotes from his own life to make it more understandable. Has an accent, but speaks very good english. Got over 100% on all tests. Just STUDY and go to every lecture, you'll do fine.
Dr. Otani is definitely my favorite Psychology professor and I'm a PSY Major. He is extremely helpful, friendly, and yes,he is very funny. I got an A in his class this summer and I'm so glad I had this class with him since I heard it was really hard but this summer class went by very smooth and fast
Gives really good notes and is pretty friendly. Covers the material well and gives you review questions for the test that help out a lot.
otani is funny... that's the only thing that kept me awake during his lectures. tests are kind of hard, but his notes and lectures are right from the book so everything from the test is too. he gives extra cred. pts on each test, sometimes up to 9 free points.
Hajime is so cute... i enjoyed his lectures. He's pretty funny. His tests are kinda hard, but if you use his review and read the book, you'll do good.
Hajime is a funny guy, but his class is pretty hard. He gives some extra credit points. If you're really in for a challenge take this class, but if you're just taking it for the UP, you may want to try and get a different prof.
I thought Otani was funny at times, but his tests were very difficult. Book is graduate level so be prepared to read a text that sounds just like a journal. He did offer extra credit to boost your grade so take advantage of it-you may need it in the end.
does not present thing in a clear concise manner leaves you wondering what the hell he just said, gets off subject easily and has essay questions on exams he pulls out from nowhere
such a cute little man. pretty easy if you're interested in psychology. i got an A and didn't read any of the text, just paid attention to his lectures.

Didn't like him, 'says right' and 'ok' to much. Avoid him at all costs
Otani is the man. He's a little dude, but can polish a plate of spaghetti like no other! The class is difficult, and partners are not allowed for the research experiment. He's fun, though even though he's slightly disorganized. Super sweet guy, though!
Otani was nice, but sometimes when I went in to talk to him I was more confused when I left.
I've had two classes with Otani, and done research with him. He's really helpful with research projects, and is also really quick at responding to emails. He's extremely smart, and has a lot of interests, which means he's also fascinating to talk to. Taking 385 with him actually prepared me to do my own research.
This class is a lot of work no matter who you take it with, but Otani is very straight to the point. He doesnt waste your time and helps out on your project. Every paper you turn in will be loaded with red marks, but you'll still get a 9 out of 10. He doesnt expect too much. I was happy taking this with him, even though research isnt my thing
Nice guy, he can be very confusing though. He has many office hours, but meeting with him produces limited results.
Otani is a research professor, not a teacher. He was hard to understand. Not just because his English isn't great, but because he doesn't explain very clearly. His tests seem to be based on nothing. Lecture notes and the book weren't useful at all. He isn't very helpful with anything.
He made the material interesting and I retained a lot of the information.
Dr. Otani is the best professor I have ever had at CMU! He is incredibly helpful, and makes his lectures interesting. Going into exams I feel fully prepared, as he makes the material easy to remember. He also gives study guides before every exam, and really does want his students to succeed!
The semester is split into 2 parts: the 1st is doing experiments and writing sections of APA papers (intro, methods..). The 2nd half is conducting your own experiment. What you put into it, is what you'll get out of it. He sets specific guidelines for what he wants. If I had to take this class again I wouldn't take it with a different professor.
Otani is very passionate about the subject, this is his research field. He knows what he is talking about although sometimes he doesn't communicate it well. There are six or so article summaries that are pretty much pass/no pass. The exams are O.K. Use the study guide to take notes and you'll do fine. A very interesting subject and funny professor.
Hajime was by far my favorite professor this semester. Hes a funny guy and is very passionate about what he talks about. The tests are directly from the lectures, so take notes from the lecture and youll be fine! Also I didnt use my text book once during the semester.
I didn't enjoy this class at all. The exams do not match the study guides at all, and I actually did better on the exams when I didn't look at them. The exams were difficult and I personally didn't think the questions made sense. They are worded very awkwardly. Lecture is very boring and pointless. I would not recommend taking him for this class!
Otani is a funny dude who grew on me as the semester went on. Lots of kids don't come to lecture but he does a good job of explaing things. The class is really just memorization with a few concepts, he does have you write 5 papers throughout the semester which some PSY profs won't make you do. He didn't give us a cumulative final which was nice.
Five exams, 10 online quizzes (all answers on Quizlet) and five Article Summaries. Thats your grade. Posts lecture notes online, so showing up to class isnt mandatory.
Very boring class, prof Otani just reads from the slides the whole time. Very few grades, a few article reviews which are credit/no credit and 4 tests. Posts all lectures on bb. tests are the exact same as the lecture slides
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Dr. Otani loves to lecture, but if you just pay attention (or read the book), this is a class you can breeze through.
Mr. Otani is very enthusiastic about this subject. The subject itself might be difficult when it comes to test but thats all. His accent is understandable and he even cracks a few jokes to keep the class alive. This is a lecture hall and lectures are posted on blackboard so you can choose when you want to skip or not.
This class is fun to go to. Professor Otani is a very cool, funny guy. Personally I am doing bad in this class but if you actually study for the exams you will be fine. Don't freak out over the article summaries, if you do them you will get a 1/1. The quizzes are all on Quizlet. He gives study guides to the exams, but they are hard.
Professor Otani is a sweet, funny guy. He makes lectures fun and entertaining. If you want to pass, do the quizzes (all on Quizlet), and read the book and you should be fine. The article summaries take a long time, but as long as you do them, you'll get a 1/1. He also gives study guides that are very hard and long.
Professor Otani is a great guy! If you dont like lectures, however, this class is NOT for you. When you go to class, it is a long lecture every single day except for test days, of which there are 5. No final exam/midterm, about 10 quizzes (1 every week or two that is all on Quizlet) and 4 Article Summaries that are about 3 pages long no textbook
it is easy class I've ever taken. Dr. Otani like to lecture, but you jest need to pay attention and read the book to get good grade
Lectures are not helpful. He lectures but his lecture is mostly him telling stories, and if there's a topic he doesn't like to teach he just skips over it and tells you to read it later. He assigns 3 page article summaries before every test that are unnecessary. He's so funny and super cute but he is not good at teaching,he'll just tell you to read
Otani is a good guy and super straight forward with grading. He gives exam reviews that directly connect with the test so if you put in effort youll succeed!
Only graded a few things in class which were credit/no-credit or an exam. Exams were based well on the quizzes without being the same questions. Very personable in class.
I really liked this class. There are 6 papers but all you have to do is read an article (3-5) pages and write a 3-4 page paper just paraphrasing it. Takes about an hour and you either get 1 or 0 on the paper and if you get a 0 you get to redo it. The test questions are mostly taken from the practice quizzes he makes so be sure to take those.
This was a harder class for me. Theres very few assignments however so I like this. His classes are interesting and he talks in a way that is easy to follow. I imagine you just need to be able to think comprehensively and have the time to do so, to do well. Papers have to be decent for him to accept them and Im still getting used to university.
Dr. Otani is okay. I found a lot of incorrect information in his lectures, but he still taught it as if it was fact. I'm disabled, and there's no way to attend virtually, so I just read the powerpoints. There are also 5 article summaries you have to do. You can do studies with the psych dept. for extra credit, which I thought was nice.
He is a funny, kind guy. He shares some fun stories and is very passionate about psychology!
Dr. Otani is a great professor, I really enjoyed his lectures because he's so knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. There were six summary papers to write, but weren't difficult. The textbook is required, but isn't necessary to do well in the course.
Professor Otani is a great teacher who admits his mistakes and makes clear his expectations/ what's due during the week. His lectures are long and can be boring, but they cover the textbook fairly well. Attendance isn't mandatory as you can easily read the slides and/or the textbook on Blackboard. Would recommend if you're interested in Psych!
do not take this class!! i had knowledge already from hs psychology IB SL. dr. otani will not respond to emails nor is considerate of his students outside the classroom. the majority of the content in his slides is inaccurate as well. the only “homework” you get is six THREE PAGE PAPERS - 1 point each. this class was very difficult.
The class is graded by three things, the article summaries are easy as long as you follow his outline, the quizzes are only there to help you with the exams. The exams are annoying and the exam guides are just everything on his slides rewritten. He has very boring lectures, but as long as you go to all of them and study properly, you should be fine
