Very helpful, gave potential essay topics for exams out in advance, and gave very exhaustive review sessions. Really passionate about teaching and art. But keep meticulous notes because mercy, test questions were nitpicky!

Loved her! One of the best profs I've ever had.

An amazing art history prof...i highly recommend the course and the prof. Take meticulous notes, and look over the hand outs...she gives you the answeres, if up to you to find them. She's also very impassioned, and makes art history interesting and relevant. Definitely amazing.
I took this course on a lark, and she was really the reason I enjoyed it. Her exams were quite challenging though...but the rest of the class was great. Her handouts were really helpful and she was definitely passionate.
Great prof-i would recommend her to everyone. study hard for the exam-especially the definitions! take notes!!! she asks questions based on what she says in class..not much from the text!!
Hoyne is an AMAZING professor! TAKE THIS COURSE! She is tough but she is so passionate about the subject that it is easy to learn
Study hard for the exam-especially the definitions! take notes!!! she asks questions based on what she says in class... Had to study almot more then other art hisoty classes but found Hoyne much more intresting (if you are in Grant Mac Ewan and you want an easier teacher get Elizabeth Beauchamp)
Amazing. I loved the class so much I went to every one and signed up for the second class with her. Go to class, take notes and study her study guide and you'll do fine. I didn't read any of the chapters in the book, just the blurbs on the images she gave to us and ended up with a great mark in the class. I'd recommend her to anyone!
great prof.entertaining. makes it fun even though i dreaded taking this class.exams were fair. ATTENDENCE is a MUST! no joke.gives exams topics so catch it quick when she says it randomly. great material and knows her stuff.STUDY STUDY STUDY. write essay questions in advance and take them to her.keeps u on track-and gives u the answers.take notes!
Best course I took this year.
She is from Europe, but her English is still easy to understand.
It's her fault I'm an ART H major. ^_^ I LOVE this prof! She's amazing! She's got a great sense of humour and makes each class worth going to. I had a night class with her, and never once did I fall asleep, no matter how tired I was. If only she taught all my ART H classes... My advice if you take her class: STUDY. Her exams make you WORK. >_<
Hoyne is one of the most awesome profs i've ever had! she is the reason i have chosen AH as a minor!
This professor was really good in every way: interesting, had fair exams, told you what was expected and was pleasant and helpful. I took Art H 101 as a fine arts requirement and am glad I had Hoyne because I had heard that this course could be difficult due to the amount of material covered. She gave really good exam outlines to make sutdying easy
She's really good. Very captivating.
What am amazing lecturer, absolutely riveting! She should teach every single instructor on campus how to give a lecture
great prof, is interesting, funny, knowledgable
hoyne is crazy awesome, and so hilarious.. who knew art history could be so funny and eye opening.
One of the best instructors I've ever had. She know her material, and you can feel confident that she knows how to properly administer exams and fairly mark. She's such a great lecturer as well.
Her lectures are a pleasure to attend.
I took these two courses a few years back but looking back to all the profs i've had, hoyne is one of the very few who stand out when it comes to lecturing. She's very engaging, passionate, and funny, her exams are fair, her wardrobe is interesting and unique just like her personality...just an unbelievably awesome professor.
Oh Hoyne! How I love you! The woman is STELLAR. Hilarious if you listen and brimming with info. Class sometimes dragged on, but that is the nature of the subject. She is a main reason Art History is now my major. Get in her class and be prepared for the hilarious descriptions of Grecian pottery and the Stela of Hammurabi!!! She is my hero
Beyond awesome. Iwas afraid the class would be a little dry, but she makes it so fun with riske Greek pottery and lots of jokes.
This is the best class to take if you want a time to nap or go out for lunch. There is no need to go to class because everything is in the textbook. So easy, so very easy.
amazing class! so interesting, and prof moves quickly and makes fun jokes along the way. alot of stuff to learn but worth it. exams do not test beyond wat is taught, they are not geared to trick you so if u are prepared u will do very well. no homework, just two exams, midterm and final, half multiple choice and half an essay portion
Wow...What an AMAZING prof! she REALLY knows her stuff and her class is really interesting. If your debating whether or not you want to take this class...the answer is YES...she's just so funny...she has cool neat stories about everything she teachers and she's so cool! Best class ever! You want to go to class...and her tests are fair.WONDERFUL!
Loved her! Sometimes went too fast when talking about a specific work, but made jokes and had an awesome sense of humour the whole time. Follow her exam outlines for exactly what'll be tested and you will encounter no problems.
Amazing teacher. She knows what she's talking about, is very helpful, and funny too. You actually get stuff out of the lectures. Her exam outlines are so detailed, and you know exactly what's going to be on the test so you can be well prepared. Definitely take a class with her!

Good prof for a subject I have little interest in. The midterm is a bit of a shock, very different style than other classes. Need to know A LOT about the paintings to do well. Engaging speaker.
Hoyne is fantastic - so down to earth and real. Doesn't get bogged down in meticulous and useless art h details, focuses on how the pieces work in a larger social and historical context. She's also extremely understanding and helpful. My group of friends and I all missed a class once and she actually took 30-45min to redo the lecture just for us.
So funny!!! She doesn't make you memorize tons of useless facts and tells you what you need to know for exams ahead of time!
At first I thought she was the best prof. around with great jokes, and anecdotes.... but after a while I found it hard to stay awake in her class, or even find the will to attend the lectures...in the end i basically ended up hating art, and failing the course. Honestly if you want to keep your love of art and art history DO NOT TAKE THIS ClASS.
Excellent...Awesome...Fantastic...Great..and my list could go on!! I usually dont fill out these kind of rating systems but this prof deserves it!

Best prof I've had so far. Turns a potentially boring subject into something truly interesting. Good sense of humour. Focus is on contextual info rather than picky details (e.g., dates). Not recommended to those who don't attend class regularly.
one of the hardest marker live, dont take her class u will end up failing, her final worth 60 and her review is useless, so dont take her class if u dont want ur money to be wasted, or ur time.
I've taken 4 classes from her and the idea of a 40/60 percentage on the exams can be daunting, until you see her outlines. She also gave us bonus questions which was fair. The most important thing is to attend lectures because the textbooks only compliment the course, the vast majority of important exam information is from her. Be a good memorizer!
Interesting.engaging.intelligent. I have taken a total of 4 classes of hers in my 4 years of university and she is one of the best profs i've had. Knows her stuff, Ive learned so much from her classes. She lectures with her own words, not from a text or reading off paper, she has a great sense of humour and she is very fair in her exams and marking
Amazing professor! I only took this class for required Fine Arts credit, but I LOVED it. She makes a potentially boring class very interesting. Definitely attend the lectures - if you take good notes, you shouldn't have a problem on the exams; the textbook doesn't cover details the way she does in class. Highly recommended.
Really fun! She is a happy prof and her course is easy. If you go to every class and listen to her you will do great. The tests focus more on her lectures than on the textbook. Would recommend her, especially if you're just trying to fill a fine arts credit.
I found it hard to keep track of her lectures, she goes on tangents and goes off on details that seem utterly pointless and thus made the class profoundly boring. Had a hard time staying awake in class which in turn made it hard to listen to her boring lecture. Sucks because her tests are 80 percent off her lectures and 20 from the text.
Great sense of humor and makes class very interesting and enjoyable. Attending class is manditory as exams are almost completely based on her notes and a bit on the txtbk. Exams are very challenging and class is not on a curve. Would recommend as long as you do your work!
Great prof if you plan to attend class. This class made me very interested in the subject even though I just took it for a requirement. Don't try to cram before her exams. It might work for the midterm but for the final make sure you've paid attention.
Great lecturer! She's hilarious. I loved this topic going in and now I just want to become an art historian. Bit of an accent but it's cute.
Very good lecturer, English is her second language and she has a better vocabulary than any of my other profs. She's engaging and funny and she tells you exactly what you should focus on most. The exams are fair and split into categories so everyone can do well in at least one. LECTURE NOTES ARE VERY IMPORTANT. Highly recommended.
Great professor! Paying attention and writing notes from lectures extremely important. Tests broken into easy sections (multiple choice, matching and essay). Actually teaches the material, instead of just telling you what the visuals are.
She is an amazing prof! Although she tends to veer off topic a wee bit, but funny. Attending class isn't mandatory as she pretty much quotes the textbook! Her exams are fair and she lays out the material prior to. Easy to understand and a great credit booster. Intersting, sweet, and very funny!
The course itself was basically so interesting that it didn't matter who the prof was. However, she was hilarious with her stories. Quite often, tho, she would spend so much time on unncessary anecdotal information that class schedule got pushed. She was also kind of an easy marker, which is a bonus. Textbook is absolutely necessary to do well.
She expects a lot on her midterm and final (and not all her questions come from the textbook, although most do), but gives amazing exam review sheets telling EXACTLY what will be on them. Lectures are reasonably interesting and she's got a good sense of humour. Moderately strong accent but excellent English.
I enjoyed Art History... And then I enrolled in her class. She treats her students like morons and wastes class time explaining simple concepts over and over and over. I still like the content and enjoyed much textbook way more than her lectures! I got a decent grade considered I seldom ever attended class.
Very professional, very crisp. She's funny, and entertains well. She takes her topic seriously and won't take any nonsense in her class. She seems to expand upon the textbook, with random tidbits here and there. Do not show up sleepy - interesting though the class may be, you will fall asleep in the darkness.
While she is very knowledgeable, and pretty funny, her lectures can be hard to follow. She crams a lot of information into 80 minutes, so you really need to perk up your ears. The midterm and final are the only assessments you get, and it can be hard to memorize all of the terms. She gives great review sheets, but too much information to memorize.
You NEED to stay awake in this class and listen to every word she says, then remember it. Helpful to review the textbook on the covered material immediately after the lecture or you will forget everything. She is an excellent prof, you just need to stay focussed. Her class is organized, her handouts tell you everything you need to know.
Nearly impossible to stay awake in her class and her train of thought is scattered. Gives out study notes and key terms for the first half of the semester, expect to take lots of notes and read the textbook ahead of time. Expect to know all keyterm definitions for midterm and final.
Hoyne's a great prof - engaging, funny, and really knowledgeable in her field. The class itself is definitely NOT a GPA booster though. She gives out amazing handout sheets on what to study for her midterms/finals, but be prepared to study way in advance as there's so much material to cover. Taking notes and reading the textbook are essential!
A very interesting lecturer, very knowledgeable about this subject. Gets off topic a lot, though. She tells you EXACTLY what she expects from you on the exam. A midterm and a final, no assignments. Exam was really hard though, with a ton of material to cover.
By far the best art history professor I have ever had. I'm an art history major and I still use my notes from her classes for my other art history classes. If you want a good mark, don't skip.
AMAZING. Lectures are surprisingly interesting, make sure to take good notes, especially when she drops "essay ?" hints. Very helpful outside of class, pleasant, etc. Go to class, don't bother reading the text (it's awful) just use it to cross-reference your notes. DO NOT put off studying!!!!
I had no prior intrest in this class before I took it but SB is phenominal!!! I will definitely be signing up for more ARTH. I truly enjoyed listening to every one of her lectures- she makes everything SO interesting. And she's so funny
Incredible prof! clearly knows and is passionate about the subject, excellent speaker. Awards students who pay attention in her class although I would say that her tests are a little hard (too many small details like dates)... otherwise probably the best prof i've had.
Best professor ever!!! She is inspiring to listen to. If you are interested in Art History, her class is a must! And the exams really aren't that hard as long as you pay attention, take good notes, and attend class.
Hoyne is SO GREAT. She is enthusiastic and fun to listen to. The subject matter would be boring without her, but she makes it interesting. I highly recommend her. Also, her exams are easier than they sound if you pay attention in lecture.
Hoyne is an amazing prof! She made me WANT to go to artH! Always so passionate and enthusiastic (particularily about Gustave Courbet). GO TO CLASS and no prob passing really well. I had C+ at a midterm and after the final ended with an A. Just study, follow what she GIVES you and you're fine. She's cute, sarcasm is awsome, clear on everything! LOVE
Great Prof! I went into art history expecting it to be dry and boring but she made it extremely interesting. This is not a class that you can coast through. You must study and you must take good notes. Midterm was worth 40% and final was worth 60% but she gives you a comprehensive study sheet of what you need to know.
BEST LECTURER EVER! I was just taking this as a fine arts credit but wow did I love learning about it from her (textbook however was so dry). She gives no notes so you have to take your own, and tests have multiple choice, definitions and an essay and she tells you exactly what she'll test on. Take this class for sure, we also saw a real mummy =)
Very pleasant and really funny! Definitely must attend though...she talks very fast and gives immense detail on things. But, like others said, she does award people who attend. 40% midterm, 60% final. MC, definitions, comparing images, and an essay portion...but study A LOT. Also DO NOT talk in her class, she will not tolerate it.
Decent prof, I enjoyed her class however I didn't think that she was very well organized. The second half was extremely haphazard and the final was on a lot of things we didn't cover in class. Good class to take for knowledge but if you're looking for an easy A I wouldn't recommend it
Dreadful. She tries to be funny and make the class interesting but it's not. She's really unorganized and by the last few weeks, runs well over class time to try and cram everything in because she wasn't prepared enough during the first half of the term.
I would not recommend this class to anyone!!! Lectures are all over the map, and very hard to follow. She does not give you notes, and makes it hard to take good ones during class time. Crammed way too much material in for the final with questions on material not covered.....and I attended every class!!! Timed each section of exam, increases stress
Took 101 with her and got an A+ and currently have an A+ after 102 midterm. Her class is ridiculously easy; she lays out *exactly* what is going to be on exams. If you're willing to put in a few hours of studying (memorization)you'll do just fine. And if you're half competent at taking notes, not writing everything she says, it's easy to follow.
She is hilarious! You need to study though!
Incredibly eloquent and knowledgeable. If you want to know more about art history, I highly recommend taking her class. It definitely isn't the easiest class, and there is a lot of information to cover, but if you're passionate about the subject and attend her lectures you'll do well.
Outstandingly knowledgeable and well spoken lecturer. An honor to attend a class from a professor who commands attention through both professionalism and wit. Refreshingly non-apologetic and outspoken. What a pleasure to attend a class from someone who has not fallen into the trap of favoring political correctness over truth. Bravo!
Very interesting lectures! She is hilarious and honest. However make sure you know what your talking about when writing you exams because she can smell the 'BS.'
Santa-Balazs made this course incredibly interesting. It's easy to get a good mark if you're willing to put in a few hours of studying, because she literally tells you EXACTLY what she's going to ask on the exams. Really funny and marks fairly, had a good experience in this class.
Class is absolutely mandatory! Text and notes are equally important, and attention to detail is key. She kept class interesting, but turns off all the lights so it's hard not to sleep.
She posts nothing online so attendance is mandatory, as is text book use. This class is great, she's hilarious and the whole class is interesting. 101 is easier than 102 and has much more history to it. You must know what you're talking about in the essay portion of the exam, but you get the possible topics ahead of time, so you can prepare.
Good prof, very funny which made things interesting when they might otherwise have been dry. She is great at emphasizing in her lectures key points that will be on tests, she seems to be a relatively easy marker so if you go to class and study the textbook this can be quite a GPA booster.
Nice enough lady but completely impossible to follow her lectures. Thick accent, does not follow a train of thought and skips around the curriculum so you have no idea where she is. Also provides 0 written notes so you pretty much scramble to write down anything you can actually understand from out her mouth. I have withdrawn- this prof is hopeless
This is easily one of the worst profs I have ever had. Her lectures are boring and lack originality. She does not provide enough information in class and you are tested purely on names and dates, not concepts. NOT A GPA BOOSTER! My advice to anyone looking to take her course is run far, and run fast. She is awful.
Going forward, she's my model for what a prof should be. She's passionate, hilarious, well-informed and provides good structure for the course overall. She'll want you to stay until the last minute of class, but completely fills you in on exam content.
Words to describe her classes: Unorganized, Dreadful, Unclear, Boring, Pretentious, and lack of focus. Those who have enjoyed her class have taken 101 and it is improved by the course content. DO NOT TAKE 102. Worst prof i've ever had.
This class is the worst class that I have ever taken, it is more like a 400 level course with all the information that you have to know. She talks way too fast and crams way too much information into the last 1/3. If you want to take an art history, take 101, way better! Really, stay away from this class! It is awful.
Very unorganized, unapproachable and just not very interesting. I would not recommend this class but if you want to try it, go for it. I would recommend Art History 101 or a different prof.
I thought Hoyne was great. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, it's easy to get a good mark. She gives insanely detailed exam guides, so there's no excuse not to do well. She tried to spice up lectures with extra content, which was interesting. I enjoyed her class a lot. There's a lot of material but not a problem if you study.
Hoyne is a very passionate instructor. She makes art history so much fun to learn. I highly recommend taking her classes.
I would never take a class with her again. She is a hard maker, talks fast, and expects you to remember everything that is mentioned in class. Does not give out notes, but give our guides of all the works that maybe on exams. Attendance is mandatory. Took 101, and 102 with her.
It's more likely to be a 400level-course. She wants you to remember everything on books, and she even adds extra some notes. More than 1000 pages contents contains 200 images and tons of terms and artists will in your midterm and final. No homework, but also no help, it's better to study by yourself at home than coming to her awful class!!!
Once you get used to writing notes fast it's a pretty good class. She's very straight forward with what she wants on the exams. Both 102 and 101 are sort of dry but she tries to make it interesting. Not too bad as long as your diligent and study through the course.
Do not ever take her class!! so difficult.. she expects everyone to know everything even though she had not cover the lectures for some chapters are included in the exam.. i was so stressed.. found no interests in her lecture at all.. end up getting bad mark.. (took 101 and 102)
I loved her. She made the class so interesting and fun. As long as you listen during lecture she'll basically tell you EXACTLY what will be on the test. It's really important to attend class. There's a lot of information she gives that is NOT in the text book. You also have to be good at taking notes!
Though the phallic symbolism rants were a bit much at times, she did make the material interesting and kept my attention all class (a tough thing to do). Occasionally humorous, ATTEND THE LECTURES, as you will be tested on that material. In terms of tests, the fairest and most thorough examiner I have ever had, you need to know the stuff though.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Attendance is mandatory, there are so many (200+) images to know for the midterm and final, and she exams you on tiny details hidden in the textbook. Heavier courseload than most of my 400 level classes. Her lecturing is all over the place and difficult to follow. SO MUCH STRESS IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME I WOULD NOT TAKE IT!!
Amazing teacher. Makes the class interesting. Attend lecture and you'll ace the exams. Midterm was easier than final. Stay on top of things and go talk to her. Such an interesting class, I learned so much. Lecture notes are better than the textbook notes.
She's absolutely hilarious! You have to attend class for her notes because the PP is just images, but it's worth it. Since it's a survey class A LOT of material is covered, and you have to memorize tons of images for the exams, so study well in advance. Exams all had a definitions and a formal essay section along with 70+ MC
She is so funny. But like cultured funny. She just talks through her information very clearly. I would recommend taking the after noon class because she has worked out a better rhythm for her talk from bumbling through the morning class. I enjoyed the class so much. she even dims the lights down nice. Very knowledgeable and prepared.
Interesting class, and she is very knowledgeable and clear. Attendance is a must take note of everything she says even if it sounds stupid. Class is not easy but does not require a lot of your time ONLY BEFORE THE MIDTERM AND FINAL which took all my energy b/c LOTS OF MATERIAL but it is a great GPA boost if you are willing to put effort.
If you have enough time to sit there memorizing dates, names, movements, and mediums until you experience flashbacks of hours of staring at notes to review terms and the history behind them and how they tie to even more history and ideas and to write down 90% of she says during her lectures, take this course. She makes it highly interesting.
I'm currently taking 102 with her right now! This a great prof who knows her stuff. Her passion for art makes her amazing to listen to, so class time can really fly by. She talks quickly and posts nothing online, so a laptop is preferred and class attendance is mandatory. She's hilarious and incredibly helpful; you have to take this course!!
She is a wonderful prof. She is very interesting, funny and makes class enjoyable. Not necessarily an easy class, but as long as you attend and put in some effort, you'll be fine. If you're interested in art and history, this is a wonderful class with a great prof!
I feel like those who don't want to put the effort in are the ones who complain about how hard her class is. I took Art H 101 and 102 with her and LOVED it. She literally tells you everything you may see on the exams with a study guide. All you need to do is put the effort in to study what she says to and you're guaranteed an A!
It is so refreshing to have a professor who is sincerely passionate about the subject they teach. She makes class interesting and provides a thorough historical context with helps create meaning for the artwork, which also helps your own understanding. Amazing prof!
I really loved her! The lectures were interesting and funny, though hard to follow at times as she jumped between pieces. A great class if you don't mind the very hard testing.
Fun quirky lady, but she expects A LOT. Tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard, and she tests on every little obscure thing from lectures and the book somehow. If you're looking for a fine arts credit, 200 level art histories are easier and have no pre-reqs, so I'd advise taking those.
Doesn't post notes online, so attendance is mandatory, and she can bore you easily, but if you pay attention she completely knows what she is talking about and tests fairly based on what is covered, and is a flexible marker as well. Sometimes goes off on tangents but lectures are much more detailed than the textbook.
I felt the need to make a comment for this class because of people complaining about how difficult this prof is. I came to no classes. all I did was read the textbook before tests. She lets you bring in an outline for the essay questions. If you don't pass this class then you should really rethink being in university b/c it is NOT rocket science.
I don't get why there dis so many good ratings about her. Yes the class is very interesting, but this was the TOUGHEST class I ever attended. JUST AVOID IT.
Hoyne is by far my favourite professor. You definitely need to put in effort to pass this class, show up to lectures, take as many notes as you can! She doesn't post notes online, so whatever she says in class is what you need to know. She's very passionate and it amazes me the amount of information she is able to get through in one class.
I took this class and failed, even though in my other classes my average is 80% or higher. The midterm is worth 40% and the final exam is worth 60% so unless you are amazing at tests and fact memorization, this class isn't for you. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone, and I would NOT take it again.
This is NOT a difficult course if you put in work. Read the textbook, memorize the list of terms she gives you (with examples), and memorize the background and content of potential essay topics. I received a 95 on the 40% midterm and expect to do well on the 60% final. People treat it as a joke and complain when they do poorly. Put in work, easy A.
I really enjoyed her class. Although it is difficult and the exams are weighted heavily. She's a great lecturer I would recommend bringing a laptop to class because she doesn't post notes. Just really need to put in work twice: at the midterm and the final. Makes the subject matter interesting and is passionate about it as well.
I loved her classes. She is very passionate about the subject, and has a great sense of humour. Get ready to read lots, and make sure you do not skip lectures, because most of the important material is said there (write down everything she says). The exams are straightforward. Print the images in black and white to recognize them during the exam.
She is one of my all time favourite professors. Her lectures changed the way I see and create art.
She is really a phenomenal lecturer. There is a lot to cover however, and i would not suggest taking this class if your looking for an easy A. The multiple choice component of the test is pretty straight forward. What was tough was the essay part, since she picks one out of a potential 6. Not an easy class by any means, but it was worth it.
I've never gotten anything below a B and I failed this course. The amount of memorization needed for the 40% and 60% exams is insane. She's not a bad lecturer and she means well, but it's hard to tell what's going to be tested and the essay portion is much harder than you'd think. Tests on small details rather than general understanding.
She clearly knows the content that she teaches and has the passion for art. Her expectations for a 100 level course is above and beyond. No assignments or papers, but the each exam basically asks for 5 well developed essays.
She clearly means well and has an interest in the course, but she expects A LOT. The material is not super hard but her lectures are disorganized and you need to be able to take VERY good notes. Going to class is crucial if you want to do well. There's only 2 exams so prepare well. Its totally possible to do well but it won't be an easy A.
Fun class, good info.
I felt that she went through all subject matter quickly so it was easy to miss things, and her lectured seemed fairly unorganized. I enjoyed the subject matter but i found the tests and therefore the class extremely difficult. It was a mandatory class for me that i failed, and taking it again am definitely going to take better notes.
She was obviously very smart and knowledgeable about her course material, but her lectures are so crammed full that it's almost impossible to keep up- the tests, and her lectures, are focused on details instead of concepts so that it's hard to know where you are in the course. I was excited for this class and ended up dreading it.
midterm exam 40% finial exam60% GG
She knows her stuff but jumps around a lot and sometimes what she said in lectures wasn't the same as the textbook. She could be really confusing. There was only a midterm and final but as long as you actually invested time into the class it wasn't that hard.
Great prof and is clearly passionate about what she talks about. Need to attend class as online notes won't get you anywhere. Wrote about 4 pages of notes on Word each class. She talks about stuff not in the text that help for exams. However, it's good to have the text to review whatever she talks about and expand. INVEST TIME IN READINGS AND NOTES
Very knowledgeable in the subject and lectures for the entire class. Attendance and good note taking is mandatory as she doesn't use power points for more than showing images. Only two assessments 40% midterm 60% final. Overall, a very interesting course but lots of material so effort must be put in.
She knows what she is talking about but you must attend class and take notes, along with doing the readings. Laptop is recommended. I wasn't really into the subject so I slacked off and found it very boring. Sometimes she gets confusing and theres a lot to take it. Midterm and final are not cumulative
The prof is very passionate about the subject and the class was very interesting. She really knows what she is talking about and makes many jokes. Preparing for exams was rigorous and involved a ton of reading and reviewing of both the text book and class notes. But all was worth it because the class is just so interesting!
This class has a lot of memorization involved. The tests are very hard unless you start preparing at the very beginning. At midterms majority of the class failed so showing up to class, extensive notes both in lectures and out are a must. Prof is very passionate about the subject but is definitely a very difficult class
The exams are insane: regular MC, MC for comparing two works of art on style, artists, period, you name it; short answer where you define words + give example (must know title, artist); essay - she gives you 5 topics ahead of time, but she chooses which is on the exam. Very passionate prof, boring class. Take good notes or you're screwed, study.
Loved her class, very passionate about the subject, but make sure you go to lectures. If you miss a class, the textbook is helpful. It's the only time I really used it. Midterm was worth 40% and final was worth 60%. She expects you to memorise dates but they are only worth like 4 points on the midterm and final.
100+ images to memorized with their dates, location, artist, and the meaning behind it. On top of that a lot of reading and her lectures are facking fast af. Good luck getting a complete sentence down without missing half the chapter material.
I think this is one of those classes that some people will love and some people will hate. She is pretty nice and interesting to listen to, but there is SO much material to study. It's just a 40% midterm and 60% final so I guess it kinda depends on whether or not you like that. She doesn't really give notes so you definitely have to go to class.
Love her! Not only is she hilarious, but she's passionate and knowledgable. Art History is no joke though. You will have difficulty with this class if you are not a visual/audio learner (or can't sit still for an hour and a half). There's a lot of ground to cover but if you show up, pay attention, and take good notes it's an easy A.
Actively study from the get-go & take exceptional notes or you're screwed. Prof is hilarious & easy to listen to, but there's TONS of material and she jumps around/doesn't organize it well. Her expectations for an intro course are INSANE! Tests include MC, picture comparison w/ MC questions, short answer and essays. 40% midterm, 60% final. OUCH.
This class is just pure memorization. I really didn't like it, but maybe if it's your thing you would enjoy the class. She is entertaining, just not good at teaching.
The ART H 101 and 102 are weighted completely on midterm and final so there is a lot of pressure to do well in both. However, if you attend every lecture and review the vocabulary, artists and works you should do well. She covers a lot of each artist and work in detail so studying is not straight memorization. Overall she is knowledgeable prof!
She is a very nice lady and very understanding when I brought my midterm to her which was marked wrong by the TA. The class itself is not my cup of tea even as a history major. It focused too much on the art and not the historical context or why it was made. There is a lot to memorize and figure out on your own, so start studying from day one!
Love this lady. So knowledgeable, so passionate and an entertaining lecturer. Definitely packs a lot of content into lectures so get ready to pay attention. Lots of reading in the textbook and lots to memorize, so if you have a bad memory this class ain't for you.
The best university class I have taken so far! She's a real treat to listen to. She doesn't try to trick you on the exams, and her essay format sheet was very helpful.
Heavily weighted on midterm and final only.
Her class was enjoyable because she has a lot of information to give since she knows what she's doing. Can be unclear and unorganized with slideshows and sometimes doesn't teach in the order of the textbook. Exam materials are given beforehand so BE SURE TO PREPARE FOR IT. A lot of material to memorize before exams. Easy grades if you work for it.
This class was a lot of work, but the prof was pretty great. Her lectures were engaging and she explained things well. I learned a ton in this class.
Hoyne (her nickname) is a great prof who is really passionate about the topics of Art History. Her lectures are very thorough and detailed, and she makes it abundantly clear what is exam material + practice exam questions. Listening to her lectures is like listening to a long story - very interesting, and engaging. Highly recommend.
