Great prof. and amazing lecturer! It's great going to his class because he get's so enthused about the subject one cannot help being interested.
Awesome Prof - He makes the material even more interesting than it already is. He's a natural-born speaker, and his enthusiasm makes the lecture even better - I never want to miss a class.
Sometimes gets excited about what he's talking about and speaks WAY to quickly. Bring a laptop and you will get 85% of the material. Gives you the essay questions for the exam ahead of time, provides a choice for the term paper each semester, researches any questions that are asked in class.
This prof is great. He is funny, and gets so excited about what he is teaching. I never wanted to miss a class. He really makes it interesting! Definately one of my favourite classes.
Hal is totally awesome. He is so into his lectures and is genuinely a nice guy! He makes time for each student who contacts him. I would take any class that he was teaching, because I know he could make me like it.
Solid Prof. who can make any lecture interesting. Great teaching style, clarity and helpfulness. Definitely a prof to look for when taking history at Carleton.
Knowledgeble, organized and an all around great professor. Strikes a good balance between content in the textbook and his lectures, creating little repetition. Maintained the best WebCT site and constantly kept in contact with the class through emails. Assignments and tests were returned promptly.
love the gold. im a 4th year student taking his seocnd year class and hes a great guy.
Mr. Goldman is a talented prof, for sure. I decided to take another one of his courses and I'm only halfway through this one. The books are good - expect to pay about $250 for the whole course (two terms). Like most profs and most people, he has political beliefs, but he doesn't let them interfere with facts - being a PoliSci major, this is nice
Goldman is awesome! He's probably one of the best profs I've ever had. He makes time for his students and genuinely cares that they do well. He'll go out of his way to make sure you do well if you go an see him. His lectures are really good and he attempts to add humor to them which is always a plus. Take ANY class by him! You will not regret it!
The Gold! Absolutely awesome. Best history prof I have ever taken. Knows his stuff inside and out, and really cares about students. Returns emails and goes out of his way to check facts and answer questions if he doesn't know them in class. Great use of visual and audio aids. Very funny too. All around excellent man and great human being. The Gold!
very clear, enjoyable to listen to. Won't fall asleep in this class!
Great professor that has a sticking resemblance to Ross from Friends; although he doesn't have a monkey. Plays the movie "The Holly Grail", to get points across in History. Enjoyed the class very much.
I highly recommend him & agree with the shwimmer resemblance.Ive taken his classes 2 times now.Very clear&easy to understand.Puts important terms on screen & narrates in episode form.He does a great job at keeping his class' attention.Cant say enough good about Goldman. He has some interesting stories about living in cold-war era Moscow,Guam&Vermont
Great teacher! Be sure to attend lectures even if you're not interested - your marks will go way down if you miss the pop quizzes and they're easy marks. Essay questions are somewhat vague but they're short so still easy to complete. All in all, nice guy, nice prof, interesting material and he really has a passion for American History.
AMAZING professor! Taking Hal Goldman's class is a privilege. He is an interesting lecturer and cares about his students. He is a fair marker and the essay topics are usually very interesting. He is a great person and makes it easy for his students to get to know him. Take his class - you will not regret it!
Awesome prof. Very passionate and knowledgeable about the material and it is apparent that he enjoys teaching it. His lectures bring the material to life. He will go out of his way to find the answer to even the most obscure questions asked in class.
Goldman really brings the material to life through his passion for the subject and through specific stories related to the time period being studied. TAs marked very critically in my class, but Goldman was very available for questions regarding marks and course material. Never cancels a class, which sounds bad now, but you'll be glad of it.
Prof. Goldman is an excellent teacher. His lectures are interesting, and he gives fun details that make the subject more relatable. His expectations are clearly defined, and he is always available and willing to help. It's obvious he cares about his students.
I loved his class. He was so detailed in his lectures. A really funny guy too. :)
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING! That pretty much sums up Goldman. He is an incredible lecturer, possibly the best at Carleton. His classes are definitely engaging. He knows his stuff inside out and is very passionate about the material teaches, and that enthusiasm is contagious. It's honestly a privilege to be in one of his classes! Best prof I ever had!
Hal is one of the best lecturers that you will have. He is passionate about what he does, jokes, and if he ever doesn't know the answer to a question you can bet that he will tell you at the beginning of the next class. His Western civ's class was the highlight of my first year, take it.
He is the best, most clear prof I have ever had. He really goes out of his way to help. He's also really passionate about History and is a wealth of knowledge.
yeah yeah he's great but, most importantly, he's a hottie.
Definately one of the best professors I've had to date. Super helpful and organized. Really funny and passionate about everything he lectures about... All professors should be more like him!
OK, so I took a first-year class of his, and after four years at university I have yet to encounter a more exciting and informative class. I'm not surprised his rating is so high. Hal is like a rockstar at History. I was kept at the edge of my seat and learned a TON. Wow, Dr. Goldman, you are the best!
I had the gold for american history in 2005-2006. He was such a great prof and I really enjoyed his classes. He used many facets and I only wish my class had been small in number so I could have gotten a little more one on one attention from him.
Professor Goldman is an incredible lecturer, hes clear and engages the class. He is also funny with history stories. The class is awesome.
Prof. Goldman is what all profs should aspire to be like. He tells his lectures like a story and makes me wanting more! Take his American History class if you can, one of the best classes I've ever taken. He knows his stuff and he's into it. Friendly with his students. He's the best professor I've ever had.
Gives same amount of questions for summer and fall exams in same course but gives fall students 45 minutes less time to complete 1 hour 15 min for fall, 2 hours for summer- doesn't make sense. His lectures are just one giant essay he reads from. Interesting stories sometimes though, wish he had done more of that before I dropped it.
Offers a relatively fair marking system that compensates meticulous and difficult exam and essay marking with easy quizzes and short outside assignments. Lectures were funny, short, interesting, and very informing. Fair bit of reading required, but it's all interesting material. Good luck getting a spot though. I waited 3 months for one!
Lectures were very good. He really knows his stuff, and can answer most questions that you ask him on the spot. Class was fairly easy, but he marks his exams like he hates you. He really does talk down to people. Unless you are a hot latino girl! I wonder what she got in that class?
This class was a nightmare. The work was relatively easy but the load was crazy. Two papers, an "outside assignment", the usual two exams, 4 quizzes and mandatory attendance part of the year. He expects your entire life to revolve around this one class. Also, his version of US history can be a little slanted at times though he tries to be balanced.
good lecturist passionate about what he teaches. knows his junk
Good person, knows his stuff extremely well - side bars keep class interesting. Workload a bit heavy but not cumbersome. Highly recommended if you want to know what makes our American neighbours tick.
Absolutely one of my the best profs Carleton has! He is really engaging and keeps his students really focused on what he is teacher. Does not hurt that he is a total babe! Would take his class again!
Best Prof EVER. Kind of want to marry him.
Excellent lectures. He has a passion for the material that keeps you interested. My only complaints are that he's very sarcastic which seems like he talks down to students. a lot of the qustions he asks in lectures seem EXTREMELY easy so you don't want to answer because it seems to obvious, and you fear the sarcastic tongue of Goldman.
Had him for american history, the mixture of class content and his passionate lecture style made this one of my favorite courses. Note taking is very easy, he puts a specific outline up each class and sticks to it. Go to class, pay attention (which is relatively easy) and you'll be fine.
Great prof, very thorough and loves the material. As long as you attend class and take good notes it is not overly difficult.
Top professor. Very helpful and enthusiastic. Knows his stuff and presents it in an intersting informative way. Highly recommend professor Goldman but be prepared to work hard.
Good professor but extremely difficult to get an A in this course. Workload consists of 16 short tests and 4 essays. Do not miss class.
Good professor who is interesting and loves his subject. Hard marking makes it difficult to do well though.
AMAZINGGG prof......He was tough but fair. Great teacher, I couldn't wait to get to class....Recommend his class for anyone...He made history come alive...very funny too.
Good professor but absolutely brutal marker! I honestly thought I had an A for sure on that exam, but he failed me! Honest to God, I did really well on it. He thinks this is law school or something!
Fantastic course! He's a great professor who is very engaging and funny. I would recommend this course to anyone! Just watch out for your marks though, he is a very hard marker. A B is a good grade in this course. But don't let that stop you from taking it! :)
A great lecturer. Very animated in his delivery of the material, yet consistent in his lecture style (rarely goes off-topic). Seems to assume that students are ignorant, and can be quite rude. His tests/assignments are not difficult. He is detail-oriented and marks accordingly, but follow his specific instructions and you should get a fair grade.
Good prof- thorough and helpful but an extremely hard marker.
Very good lecturer. Extremely clear and seems to be very passionate about the subject. Really learned a lot and was interested in every lecture. However, he is an extremely difficult marker and expects too much on exams. Also, didn't like the way he ignored students who had their hands up and could be pretty rude to people asking questions.
Amazing prof. Lectures like he's telling a story, and really knows his stuff. Take this class!
Fun prof and great class but he treats his students like they're all first years who know nothing about history. Paradoxically, he marks like we're in fourth year. His sarcasm was funny sometimes but it could be distracting and rude when commenting on my work (and I got all As - I can't imagine the comments he gave to people with lower marks).
Witty, smart, pragmatic professor. Definitely not a tree-hugger. Says things as they are and does not care about political correctness like other history professors. His classes are very entertaining because he is a great story teller. And he's hot!
Absolutely amazing. Taught like he was telling a story with key terms up on over head to follow along. Tough marker, but always willing to help students. Answers questions with clarity and detail. He even related some topics to pop culture with made it even more interesting. I would totally take another one of his courses.
Only halfway through the year. Excellent story teller who praises his students well and supports. One must focus during his course to be able to keep track. Excellent sense of humour. Heavy workload but fair.
If suck at writing an essay, do not take it. We gives you an essay on the exam which I thought was terrible for those who do not do well in writing.
He is fabulous at lecturing, speaks as if he is reading a well-written book is the only way to describe it. Very heavy amount of information though and he goes quick so it takes lots of work to keep up.
If you're sick of the typical politically correct prof who toes the progressive line, this is the prof for you. That said, he is intellectually honest, and will give fair exposure to ideas he does not agree with, before utterly annihilating them.
Really good prof. Very clear cut in lectures.
Incredibly knowledgeable, going to class is MANDATORY or you will fail no question. He goes through absolutely everything in the most informative lectures you will ever experience.
Talks a lot, but class is a MUST. I am telling you now you will have a hard time passing this class if you don't go to class.
The best university professor I've ever had in terms of clarity and quality of lectures. Going to class is essential, though.
Lectures were great, however his exams are way too difficult
Took this as an elective and man am I glad I did. Don't take it if you aren't interested in European history but if you are you'll get a lot out of this class. Professor Goldman makes the tests insanely easy for you if you just pay attention in class, which is easy because he's an incredible lecturer. If you're a history enthusiast take this class!
Hal is an incredibly knowledgeable teacher, definitely the most intelligent professor I've ever had. If you miss class you will fail. He puts so much information into his lectures that reading the textbook just won't do it for you. Attendance is absolutely essential. Great teacher.
I LOVED Hal's class. He is an amazing lecturer and obviously an incredibly smart guy. I'm taking a course this year just so he can be my prof. You HAVE to go to class and take notes, but if you do your readings and put in effort, you will succeed. Makes it very possible to get a good mark.
Prof Goldman is great! He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches. He made a course that I didn't have much interest in very interesting. He is very approachable and tries to learn as many of his students names as he can. He is always willing to read over draft outlines and introductions for essays. He can be a tough grader though
Hal was an amazing prof. I took his HIST 1001 class and absolutely loved it. He's willing to look at essay outlines and introductory paragraph and helps a lot with the transition from high school to university. His lectures were hilarious and he picked great material for the discussion groups. Make sure to read the textbook!
What a horrible prof. Expects your life to revolve around his class, is rude, doesn't seem to understand that students have other classes and isn't very fair. Doesn't take responsibility when he is late in doing something, but expects students to be punctual to a T. Show up, take notes and you'll do fine though-he reads off his notes the whole time
Professor Goldman is an amazing history professor. His lectures touch on the most important aspects from the text and expands further on them. Time always seems to fly by in his lectures. The only bad thing is it's not easy to reach him outside of class. But he's very approachable and is always accessible by e-mail.
Hal was amazing, and his content was very interesting. He replies very fast to emails and he makes sure his students understand the course. The only negative thing about him is that he gives really short breaks and he sometimes doesn't finish the lecture on time. This can be frustrating if you have class right after his.
Hal is one of the best lecturers I had all year which made his class enjoyable and entertaining. If you want an easy A this is the class to take - the only downside is that you have to attend class as he takes attendance. I would take his class again in the future.
Hands-down the best professor I have ever had in my university career. He is extremely knowledgable and open to answering any questions students have. As a science student taking a history course for the first time, I felt out of my element, but Hal made the content very engaging. He is not a lecturer that uses ppt slides, so be ready to listen
Every class had a quiz of questions from the textbook and lecture and it counted towards your mark so attendance is mandatory. (It was the same with discussion groups). He seemed rude or weird at some points, but overall the lectures were informative and we only did 1 essay and a take-home multiple choice exam thing that was easy.
Make sure you listen in class because you will have a quiz at the end about the lecture
He is extremely good at teaching history. I cannot detect any major bias in any subject he has taught. Very intelligent and a great prof.
Hal is a great prof! He was my favourite professor during my first year of university. He is very passionate about what he teaches, and is very personable. He assigns books to read throughout the year but you can make do without reading. Would take his class again.
Very good lecturer, engaging and clear.
Good lecturer. Let me type an exam he couldn't read but unfortunately didn't accomodate my father's passing away at the beginning of semester and was cold about it.
Very interesting lectures. Quizzes every class, but as soon as you get used to the format of the quizzes, they are easy A's. GO TO THE LECTURES OR YOU SHALL NOT PASS! very reasonable prof.
Hal is an awesome professor! He made the online asynchronous format bearable and actually fun! His lectures were great and he was so accommodating. Honestly, if you need/want anything, just ask! The lectures were amazing, the period of history is fun to learn, and this course (with Hal, specifically) is a must-take!
Decent guy just a bit passive aggressive
Dr. Goldman is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are very interesting, organized and easy to follow. His instructions for quizzes and assignments are very clear. I had him my first year and he gave us tips about writing and citing sources that I still use often in my classes. Outside of class he was very caring, helped me a lot.
Overall Hal is great and very fun to have. Personally, I felt the course was a bit too structured though
I've taken three of Hal's courses altogether. He was definitely a tough grader but I enjoyed the challenge. He expects a lot from the essay writing, and if he disagrees with you, your mark may reflect that. However, he was inappropriate with me over email which was reported to the school. This is one professor to stay professional with.
This was an online asynchronous class, but Prof Goldman made his video lectures engaging. Lectures are extremely content heavy and he didn't use any slideshows so make sure to take really good notes. Weekly quiz questions were given before the lecture so you could fill them in as you were watching. Essay each term was graded tough but with feedback
Prof Goldman gives great lectures and explains things very well making learning fun & easy. Attendance and reading is very important as there is a quiz at the end of each class. Prof is very kind, easy to speak to and is frequently available to provide help. Great prof and would love to take his courses for the rest of uni
Being one of my first professors at Carleton Professor Goldman was my favorite professor. He clearly knew and understood what he was talking about in class and actively engaged students even in a class with a few hundred people.
Prof. Goldman made each class extremely interesting and engaging. He provides everything expected of you in great detail, and in advance, and is always open for questions in person or by email. I will be looking for courses specifically taught by him in the future. His grading is fair, not tough. You have access to everything he expects of you.
Dreading every week for this class. Hal is a very tough grader and gives feedback that is hurtful and unproductive. Lectures are long and boring, and it is difficult to know what he is going to test you on during the quizzes. A waste of three hours every week, don't let Hal kill your love for history as he did mine
I loved him as a person and as a prof. The class is difficult but rewarding. I will take any class he teaches in the future:)
Assignments with Goldman provide no room for creative outlooks and grading is extremely difficult. The provided feedback from this prof is useless, and no support of real value is provided. He has little to no care for students and at times seem rather self centred. Lectures are entertaining enough to watch.
This guy was fantastic, sincerely look forward to taking him again in the future even though it's not my major at all. As an American at Carleton I was skeptical of a US history class but this far outpaced my expectations. Highly recommend this class to every student at Carleton.
HIST2401A LS23. 2 weekly quizzes, 10 questions, 5 from lecture, 5 from textbook. Easy, for this semester he dropped 2 lowest quizzes. 40% Essay on a book, 4 pages double spaced, citations required. 20% Outside assignment, it's MCQ questions he gives beforehand. Good lectures, can email often. Make sure you do quizzes well. Essay might tank you
Fantastic prof. Goldman is the real deal. Tough grader, but gives good feedback on assignments. Great lectures and funny guy too. Take his courses whenever you can.
TAKE IF YOU'RE FIRST YEAR!! This man deserves everything right in the world. I am definitely a better student and writer because of him. He is FAIR and gives honest criticism in the sense he is actually invested in your success. His class isn't exactly easy, but it teaches you how to pay attention. Great lectures that are more like monologues.
Hal was my favourite professor this year! As a first-year student, I feel like his lectures, advice and feedback all came in handy for not only his class but other courses. You can tell he really cares about his students and how well they do in his course. Overall, a really caring teacher and I would definitely recommend his course.
very well structured class
A legend in lecturing who makes history more into a story, developping past the textbooks with interesting anecdotes without dragging too long. I took his full-year history class in 2022 when he announced his retirement though he continued teaching afterward due to his passion. If you don't show up to lecture good luck passing tests or quizzes.
He is so funny. I enjoy his lectures but sometimes find it is very work heavy. Basically every class has sometime due.
Professor Goldman was average, he was not personable he was just there to get the job done. He made the class somewhat enjoyable, other than the fact that he would call out students that arrived late. Overall, he did not exceed any of my expectations and remember don't show up late.
Interesting lectures and material. He doesn't exactly sugarcoat American history but he seems quite pro-America rather than critical of it. Workload is extremely manageable making it not too strenuous as an asynchronous class.
luv hally hal
Presently taking hist 2804 and attendance is fully mandatory ( auto fail if more than 5 absences) Lectures are very monologue style and although you can show up late he makes you feel super guilty. Three essays and no final or midterm was nice though,
Professor Goldman's class was a mixed bag. The lectures were engaging, but the grading was tough. Using unstuck study and the free textbook helped me stay on top of the work. Overall, it was a challenging yet rewarding experience.
The most engaging history professor I have had yet. At first he may appear a bit scary, as he hates it when people show up late. However, after a while you notice he is very caring and passionate about history. PSA: He likes to have hardcopy papers, so make sure you get them done before the day they're due so that you have time to print them out!!
He is very accesible and unless he tells you in advance he is unavailable you will heer baxk from him. if you do not go to class you will fail. the course is very engaging and the projects are fun and easy if you put in effort.
Very Friendly Prof, his classes are always entertaining with his large personality which is sure to make you smile, unless you're disrupting the class then he will embarrass you! His history of Vietnam War and Society course is a very good class, assignments are more fun and less a chore, 10/10 would take again.
Hilarious and engaging lectures, Hal is witty and makes everyone in class feel included. His feedback is detailed and straight to the point which makes it easy to know what you need to improve. Grading can come off harsh but not unreasonable and he is very accessible in and out of class. Would 100% recommend for first years!
Hal "Goatman" was, to be honest, my favourite professor in my first year. There are plenty of assignments to do, so if you mess up once, it's not the end of the world. His grading is reasonable, but please ask him to go over it with you because it helps tremendously. He is funny, and overall, his WW2 seminar was a blast to be in. Take the class.
good prof with interesting lectures but he's very dramatic about being late, even if it is
Very engaging lectures, you will get called on to participate in group discussions. Attendance is mandatory, and his grading is tough, but if you listen to prior feedback, you'll do well. There are quite a few assignments, sometimes with pretty limited time, but they give you a chance to boost your grade. No textbook, but a few required books.
Lectures are engaging, and he will call on you during group discussions. Somewhat of a tough grader and has specific expectations, but if you listen to feedback, you'll do well. No textbook, but a few interesting books. There are many assignments, and he often gives pretty limited time, but they're pretty interesting to complete.
He is very nice and his lectures are very interesting. He is a very tough grader though, so make sure you pay attention to the lectures, readings, study, do your homework, and do it the best you can. He is very funny though and wants you to do the best you can!
Very lecture heavy but the lectures are interesting and easy to take notes on Choice of paper to write - neither too difficult Quiz on lecture every class, attendance is mandatory to pass
Probably the best history prof I've had at Carleton so far. Manages to keep every lecture interesting and engaging. He does get overly upset at people who come in late, but otherwise Professor Goldman is great!
