I went to CARSS tutoring every single week since the school semester started. I attended the tutoring that she set up with a TA as soon as that started as well. I bought a guide. She grades the class on 2 tests and the Final exam. So, (30%,30%,40%) If you're not a good test taker like I am, you'll fail the class. Find a different teacher. Please.
How did she became a Professor? Does not have a clue about teaching. She makes The course seems like Rocket Science and we have to study for it like we are doing a PhD. If you have a choice, don't ever take ny class with her. She needs to redo whatever she does to teach people. Avoid her at all cost.
I can't say how helpful she is during her office hours since I never went. She tries to answer questions in class but honestly I couldn't pay attention in class to the point where I stopped going. Her last two tests were crazy, and even though I had studied the material well, it's not hard to get lost. CARSS helped me so much for her class.
Professor Sayahi is a great professor. She's very helpful during her office hours. I know the class might be a bit boring. I don't know why people say she's terrible. She's well prepared and knows the material. She's much better professor comparing to manning or ngo
Very intelligent, but can't convey her lesson in a way that students will understand. Lectures are inconclusive. Better off reading the textbook and going to CARSS.
I assume Prof. Sayahi is new to teaching, be aware of that. I got an A in this course no problem for two reasons: Read the text book before class and again before the test-Do all the problems she recommends. Makes multiple choice work in your favor. Hardly went to her office but every time she was w students far beyond her schedules hours. Respect.
i have no problem with the professor, she does her job and i do mine. i just wanted to say that the gen chem textbook is the best. Is so easy to read and understand. i dont go to ectures because i actually enjoy reading the text book. if u struggle read the textbook-- its great. honest to god future chemist the textbook is awesome. i love it.
She is a good profressor but most people have trouble understanding her bcuz of her accent. If you read before class you'll be fine. Her slides are really helpful. Do more practice problem you do from the textbook the better your grade.
This class is honestly not a tough class as long as you actually pay attention. if you have questions, she is very kind and approachable. if you do the practice problems in the textbook you should be fine and she also gives bonus on her exams. the only bad thing ( or good thing) about the class is that it is solely based on the average of 4 tests.
She's a nice professor but it's hard to learn from her lectures. Teaching yourself is necessary to getting a good grade.
She doesn't help at all, she can't speak English, she makes mistakes on her lecture slide all the time. She has students correcting her. STAY AWAY FROM HER CLASS
I honestly recommend not taking this class with her, unfortunately she was the only option for INTRO CHEM 2. If you go to her office hours you'll leave even more confused. Very nice lady but teaching is just not her thing. paying to teach myself (and fail at it)!
Prof Sayahi is a really good professor. I previously took this course with another professor at UAlbany and failed horribly. Prof Sayahi explains things with good examples and if you study the notes and do some practice problems you will do good on hers tests. She's fair and you don't need to do the homework for a good grade. Would recommend.
She does have an accent, going to class+reading the textbook+reading the slides are guranteed for passing. I suggest reading first as it is more confusing, then looking at slides or going to class. She tries to put things simplest.
Professor Sayahi explained the subject very clearly in her lecture. She's very helpful during office hours and lecture if you have questions. Tests are very fair and you should have no trouble as long as you read the slides, take notes, and do the practice problems assigned.
Professor Sayahi was a really nice professor who made herself very approachable and offered plenty of office hours to meet outside of class (although these were far too packed with students). Well prepared and great powerpoint notes. Class isn't too hard as long as you can read the powerpoints and do the questions she recommends.
Answers all questions
Sayahi is kind and helpful. She isn't as articulate as other professors but she still puts in a good effort. If you can answer about 80% of textbook questions correctly you should find the exams to be incredibly easy (they are all multiple choice). Practice and repeat for o-chem. It's tedious, but not nearly as hard as people hype it up to be.
She is the best professor i have had so far at ualbany. She is really nice and will answer all your questions even if it takes hours--one girl was in her office for one and a half hours, made me mad but nice to know prof. cares--she will extend her office hours just for students. Btw, she has bonus questions (1-3) on tests. Mastchem adds +3 to avg
She was such a nice woman and seemed very smart. She just can't teach. My suite mate and I read each chapter, did the review problems, and went on youtube for more help. Its not an impossible class with her, but you will need to work extremely hard!
Prof Sayahi is a great professor despite her reviews. If you do well on Mastering Chem, you are bound to do well on the tests. Although your grade is only all 4 tests averaged, you can earn up to 2 extra points by doing well on Mastering Chem. Also, attend her office hours super early because it's always packed.
I didn't have the need to go the lectures, as all the material was just ripped from the book, but occasionally went to her office hours, and found her extremely helpful.
She's mostly a textbook interpreter, but a good one. She presents the material in a clear fashion, and she explains everything pretty well.
This professor is not organized in her speaking whatsoever. If you do all the work yourself you will probably be fine. Thank You Based God
Great professor. Has a slight accent (not exactly sure what country), but still very understandable. Good lecturer. As long as you pay attention in lecture, copy notes, and do the practice problems she assigns at the end of the chapters, you'll ace the exams. Exams are structured very much like the practice problems, maybe even a little easier.
Basically reads the slides included with the textbook and is very confusing. Tests are fair questions similar to those in the book. If you plan on taking Orgo 2 avoid Sayahi as she does not prepare you with the necessary knowledge to succeed in Orgo 2. Learned pretty much nothing and had to re teach myself all of the concepts for orgo 2.
All of the info in class comes from the slides. If you pay attention and talk to her after class you should have no problem. The concepts taught are very easy. Overall a good professor and an easy class if you read over the slides and ask her for help. If you are still having issues sign up for CARRS
Power point And that's it
Reads off of powerpoint given from textbook company. Tests are not easy.
There's one more professor that teaches the class. Take him! Because in this class, whether it's this time or not, you will have a hard time with. She reads straight from the slides and if you don't understand it after exhausting all resources, she offers no other help for you - even in office hours. I DON'T RECOMMEND.
Lectures aren't enthralling as she discusses Power-Point slides more than she draws things out. Orgo is tough for students coming from Gen Chem because orgo requires different means of studying which no one will communicate to you until its too late. The curve is reasonable but most people will have to study hard to make it through. DO PROBLEMS!
I received an A in this class. There are ZERO short cuts to Orgo. She basically reads off the slides provided by the book, however she does well in explaining questions presented in lecture, and does delve further into things if its warranted. Do the Mastering Chem, 3% bonus85% for A Do EVERY question in the book. And read each chapter twice.
You will fail this class of you do not take advantage of her office hours. Her lectures are very vague however Her exams are detailed. She'll speed through examples so I suggest you sit in the front. The only time you'll need the textbook is to study because you'll have to pretty much teach yourself. I learned more from YouTube than her class.
She doesn't understand enough English to properly express concepts in chem. She blasts through her slides, its impossible to write everything down. She is very vague and doesn't get how to really teach her students. Her class woud be better suited for a review for more kids who've already taken this class. Tests are 20 questions + 5 Extra Credit
lectures are very clear and very well broken down.
You get what you give with this class. If you are a dedicated science major, this class will be a breeze. If you plan on not doing work, don't bother. Also my key to success was to do all of the practice problems.
Sayahi is a research professor, however she isn't great at lecturing. She lectures as if she's talking to Graduate students (her accent doesn't make it any better either). I say make sure you attend CARSS office hours or avoid her and take Toscano. *If sciencemath comes easy to you you will do good.*
Hard to understand her accent and office hours aren't that helpful. Basically have to teach yourself the class because she reads off powerpoints and it's hard to follow. If you can choose a different professor do so!!!
Definitely would try your best to not skip class. She's a very sweet lady and will answer any of the 350 students questions in class. If you don't understand something she will re-explain it for you. I suggest taking notes even if you know the material and use the CARSS tutoring if you can.
Awful professor. She is monotone and reads off her slides, which, do not make any sense. You are better off reading the textbook. There is NO curve and tests are extremely difficult. There is homework on mastering chemistry when does not correlate with class or test material at ALL. Avoid her class at all cost. I did not and will be repeating it.
Professor Sayahi is a total sweetheart. She is always available in office hours for extra help. Her final exam is not cumulative, which was great.
Sayahi isn't that good at explaining things. I found that going to her class was a preview and then going to carss tutoring was review. Sign up for carss before you start struggling ! Don't wait until you are, you won't get a spot.
DO the practice problems and study!! Do not expect an easy A, chemistry is a subject you have to practice to understand! Sayahi was very helpful during office hours and she gives good advice on how to succeed in her class, I suggest going to her office hours when you don't understand something.
Dr. Sayahi is an excellent professor who answers questions, will do examples on the board, and is very welcoming. She is sweet and really knows what she is doing. Loved her for Gen Chem I, and am taking her for Gen Chem II. Text book needed for access code and practice problems to prepare for tests. The grading process is clear, and tests are fair.
Her lectures are very monotonous and boring. I never fully understand the problems she does either. I would suggest reading the textbook for clarity.
Her grading system is very difficult to do well in. If you score low on one test you have a very small chance of getting an A. Her lectures are very monotonous and she uses the presentations right from the textbook. I get just as much from reading the book as I do from going to class. Hands down one of the hardest classes I've taken.
Great professor. I didn't take chem in high school so I expected to do bad in this class. I got an A. By going to class, paying attention, reading her slides, and doing practice problems. Everyone who has failed must have not been putting in enough effort. Sign up for CARSS! Bought textbook for access code only. Put in the effort and you'll pass
Sayahi is a good teacher. Lectures weren't really helpful. Open up the powerpoint and study yourself. Do sample problems, study and try to understand concepts. Her exams aren't hard if you've studied. I got an A in chem 2, and took her for Orgo 1 with i got an A in as well. Same for orgo. Study on your own, do prblms and you'll be fine.
You need to attend class and study hard to actually get a good grade in this class/preferably at least one week beforehand. Lectures are pretty boring but hang in there. Attending review sessions are pretty crucial if you want to pass her tests.
Dear freshmen, do not take her. They will try to filter you out in the first year as a bio major and taking this class with her will really help in that process. Its a easy class but she makes it hard for no reason. She basically reads off of her ppts and her exams will not be easy unless you get help from CARSS tutoring
Dr. Sayahi's honestly one of the best professors at UAlbany. She's not the greatest in lecture, but GO TO OFFICE HOURS! It helps so much, she's wonderfully patient and will do multiple examples with you until you understand it. If you don't do practice problems, you will fail. Her tests are fair, but only if you study.
Professor Sayahi was one of the best out of the professors that i had in my semester. If she didnt get through slides in class that info would not be on the exam. She does examples in class for problems in the chapters so id show up to every lecture. Make sure you do the end of chapter questions because she gets some test questions from them.
Professor Sayahi teaches in a way that makes sense and has a sense of continuity so that the tree of branch is built from trunk to branches to leaves. You can always raise your hand the instant you have a doubt and she'll halt and answer your questions. She is easy to the eyes as well. It was a joy to attend her classes.
Professor Sayahi's lecture can be boring, but if you read the textbook chapter/sections before coming to class, take notes on them, and pay attention to her in class, you'll be fine. She does a ton of example problems in class, so don't miss class if you struggle with chem. Overall very sweet and genuinely wants to help you succeed.
Professor Sayahi is not a good teacher, she does not teach in her lectures. She just reads off her powerpoint and does the same examples on the board. Her tests are worth 82% percent of your total grade and are usually math heavy. If you don't enroll in CARSS tutoring, you'll be completely lost.
Office hours and carss tutoring help a lot. Her tests are super easy and she always give bonus questions. DO NOT SKIP the practice questions at the end of each chapter. If you study and do those questions you are guaranteed to pass all her tests. She's my favorite professor so far.
Sayahi is an okay professor. Her lectures are specific to what she wants you to know however her class is very boring. It's hard to sit through the class. Doing the practice problems in the textbook really help with the tests. Also, read the textbook for clearer learning. Homework is online and is very easy if you try. Tests aren't bad.
Goes waaaaaaaay too fast in lectures and then what she teaches isn't even what's on the homework!!! She's hard to understand and doesn't give you the time of day when you ask questions.
I am working on my second BS, and I can safely say that in terms of her passion for the class, and her ability to put things into easily accessible terms, she is one of the worst teachers I've ever had in over 5 years of collegiate level schooling. Her office hours are a joke, and her lectures are a vapid waste of time for anyone who studies alone.
Chem is a tough subject. Its not like your history class where you can study the night before and get a good grade. People who complain about this Professor, will complain about any chemistry professor. Go to class and do her suggested back of chapter problems and you will shine. She is great and gives you chance to get 40 extra cred points.
Worst professor I've had so far. Great person when you go to office hours, I just don't think she knows how to lecture about the subject. Gotta do lots of reading and practice on your own. She just copies & pastes the textbook onto her lecture slides then she just reads off of those. If you can avoid taking her, do it. If not, try CARSS and prayers
Sayahi is amazing! As someone who knows (from gen. chem) how tough summer classes are & HATES CHEMISTRY, having her for Orgo 1 really made a difference. I don't think the people complaining on here realize that in Orgo you HAVE to do practice problems to succeed. However, she makes it as easy as she can & answers questions. She also grades easily!
She has trouble communicating the material, but is very nice.
Instead of using mastering chem, we're using aleks. It sucks and won't let you move on from a topic until you finish it. I think this professor is boring. I never go to her classes anymore.
TEXTBOOK IS ONLINE DONT BUY IT
I don't think she really knows how to lecture on the subject and the lectures tend to fall behind homework material.
I think she is the best teacher I have had this semester. I find her practice problems very helpful. She always asks if there are questions and takes the time to answer them. I think going to class is imperative and writing down her practice problems. I also like that she asks students questions and gets involvement from the class.
If you took regents chemistry you will be fine. Tests are not as hard as you would expect but she does not curve them. Read all the slides for tests and if you understand it you will be fine. She gives good practice problems in class.
I have never met a teacher that can not teach. She struggles with explaining concepts and has a very thick accent that does not help. I am in her lecture, Ive skipped maybe one class, but I am not doing well. I am also in the CARSS study group. And I learn more from the TA there then I ever did with her
She gives multiple opportunities to ask questions during class and provides thorough explanations. Exams are hard, as expected in Gen Chem, so you have to work for your grade, but as long as you pay attention during lecture and copy the example problems as well as do the homeworks and review questions in the textbook, you will be fine.
She isn't a good professor. She fumbles around with her words because she doesn't speak english properly and you get lost easily because of it. Her grading is all based on the tests which are typically 20 questions, so if you get one Q. wrong you lose half a letter grade. HW is based on ALEKS, which is THE WORST WAY TO LEARN THIS TOPIC. Use CARRS
Dr. Sayahi is a regular chemistry professor. She's not too harsh or too caring either. I got B's in 3 of my exams and a C- in one exam. I did all the homework, some weren't finished on time though. As long as you finish all the homework on ALEKS by the end of the semester you'll be fine. Her grading criteria is amazing, it would be hard to not pass
The whole class is based on 4 tests (80%) and ALEKS (20%). The tests are not too bad, but you HAVE to know your stuff to do well, especially bc they're only 20 questions. Her lectures suck, so I would suggest signing up for CARSS and you'll be fine even if you never attend any of her lectures. ALEKS is TORTURE but just keep up with it and it's fine
Sayahi is definitely smart and knows her stuff. She goes very slow and could be helpful, but the material itself is hard. Needed a tutor and I found that the tutor once a week was better at explaining than she was. Did horribly on 3 tests, got a 75 on one. Reached out to her though and was very helpful, giving studying tips. Sign up for tutor
I had her for both chem 1 and chem 2. She is nice and willing to help. I didn't have difficulties understanding her (because of her accent). Exams are not hard and she mostly doesn't curve.
Sayahi was easy to keep up with during lectures and her exams were pretty straightforward yet difficult. She does not curve in the slightest.
She cares about her students and wants to see them succeed. With that being said, she is not a good professor. She is unclear in lectures and makes it difficult to study for the exams because most of the information that is supposed to be on it isn't there. Exam averages are always low, but the pop quizzes are the only part of class that work.
She's amazing. She will help you and explain them very carefully. She puts everything in a PowerPoint and gives great examples.
Tests are only 20 questions so you have to know your stuff. The homework takes FOREVER and is extremely hard. She goes slow in lectures which is nice and she gives pop quizzes in class so you have to go. The course is curved but not the individual test grades.
To be honest, a lot of poeple dont like her because this is not just a class you can sit in and pass. You have to put in work but she explains things and takes her time. Yes it might be boring but she explains everything very well and if you needh er outside of class she is accessible and answers questions through email. Love her!!!
She uses the program ALEKS and then you have to be on top because she will not tell you when the first due date is. she got an accent so beware. that class is so hard.
Halimah Sayahi is very kind and soft spoken however lecture is very hard to get through. Class is extremely boring and difficult. The Aleks HW system takes up a lot of my time, which is why it's hard to balance several classes with the amount of hw that is due.
I'm a freshman and this is my first class. She has a PhD and is very smart. She has an accent, but that doesn't make it difficult to understand her. She takes time to review topics and answers questions efficiently. She is very sweet, but she is strict and does not tolerate cheating or impoliteness, as she should. I'm taking ACHM 121 with her next.
She is very helpful during her office hours. During her lectures, she explains the concept really well but sometimes it is hard to understand the actual concept and she will move on a little too fast. She does not stray from the syllabus.
It's hard to understand her lectures, not only because of her heavy accent, but also because some of the material isn't explained by her well enough and it's hard to get the hang of. Be prepared to teach yourself most of the content. Join study groups and read your textbook in your free time.
This class was the most challenging class I took during freshman year. Prof. Sayahi is a very smart lady who loves to explain things but she will only do so if questions are asked in lectures. She moves quickly through the material and the tests are extremely difficult. Study the slides, get extra help if needed and you will be fine.
She goes pretty fast in lecture. The aleks homework is a lot, so if you are a procrastinator its not for you. Tests are difficult and be prepared to basically spend hours a week doing the aleks then more trying to understand everything.
Aleks (online homework system) was a nightmare of a system. It did help but it was work. Otherwise the class was mediocre. Not severely difficult but not a class you can skip everyday. Tests are manageable, but you have to study.
Decent professor, suggest going to her office hours to get extra help as the online HW system is useless
This course was not hard, but you have to put the effort in to see the grade you want. She is super helpful if you go to office hours. Shes willing to work with her students. Also she does not offer extra credit but allows bonus questions on tests.
Sayahi moves really really fast and doesn't explain things well. Everything I know about chem I learned from CARSS and from the labs. She doesn't take attendance but its still good to go. ALEKS (what she uses for homework) is A LOT of work and Is hard to keep up with. Don't take this class unless you know you're good at chem because.
She was a nice lady but she honesty did not care that 75% of the class was failing. She explains things really fast and her accent is a little heavy. Every single time we had an exam, the class average was in the 50's, she doesn't even curve ): The tests are also super hard. The only good thing was that the final wasn't cumulative. Its very hard.
She is a very smart lady but she has a very hard time communicating and effectively teaching her ideas. Her tests are extremely difficult but she does curve the grades a little bit.
The teacher is very knowledgeable and is passionate about Chemistry. The teacher has a little accent which makes understanding the material a little difficult. Going to her offices hours definitely helps however there is always a long line. If you do take her class, asks questions in class instead of waiting 1 hour in line for her office hours.
I literally learn more from doing Aleks and studying on my own. Going to the lecture is pointless because attendance isn't mandatory, and she reads directly off the slides. Tests are never curved, and homework is due about every week.
Unable to get the concept across
Class is pretty difficult but professor makes it so that she is reachable outside of class and is extremely helpful. Professor only grades off of tests and a minimal amount of outside work.
Good luck.
The professor has a slight accent, its not too bad. Shes very nice . I suggest going to CARRS tutoring which is free I learned way more information there than in the actual class. You dont need the textbook. You have to pay for Aleks and its very annoying but helps you learn . Dont take the class if you dont want to put in the work.
Textbook not needed but ALEKS hw is a must to get a good grade. Content is hard and she goes quickly & has an accent. Suggest going to CARSS, as exams make up over 50% of your grade and are difficult. If you go to office hours to go over an exam she will go over the test and give partial credit for some answers. Effort necessary for success.
this class was so hard and you really have to put the time in if you want to pass. she knows the information well but is not very good at making sure her students know it well. she was very hard to meet with at office hours because she always had so many people there you would have to wait for hours. good luck bc yore gonna need it
Here's the thing: you can't be lazy. This might not be an easy A class, but it isn't hard to get one either. Her slides are detailed, CARSS is always available and she always explains things in class. There is also ALEKS, which can help you master topics. I promise, if you put in even a little effort, you will get a good grade.
Dr. Sayahi is great, her lecture slides are clear and uploaded to blackboard. You don't need the textbook but it's helpful to further explain any slides you don't understand or for practice questions. The tests are fair, if you don't do well on the first one, don't get discouraged, just know that it doesn't get easier. Taking her ACHM121 class.
This class was definitely a challenge. Tests are literally worth 80% + percentage of our grade. She offers no resources to help us study except the textbook. Aleks(homework) is very difficult, I used youtube videos to help me pass this class. overall, If you're not good at chem, you don't have any chances of passing this class. Avoid at all costs.
Sayahi is very sweet and caring - but she is strict. Her class is definitely doable but you HAVE to put the work in. Simply studying the slides and reading the textbook will not get you an A. You have to go to tutoring, office hours, USE COLIN HENCKS PRACTICE YOUTUBE VIDEOS BECAUSE THEY ARE ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THE EXAM and do ALEKS.
In High school, I loved chemistry with everything within me. After taking Sayahi's class, my love for chemistry is no more. She literally only grades you on the exams, the final one being cumulative. She offers no extra credit, and she leads her lectures like she is reviewing, not teaching. The way she grades is peculiar. Surprised I even got an A-
terrible terrible terrible. She goes through the slides in about 30 seconds. She posts them on blackboard, but at that time, you already dont know whats what. i would not recommend taking her class.
she only reads off the slides and she doesn't explain anything if you have anyother options go for them.
Dr. Sayahi is very kind her test are usually 20-25 questions and fairly doable if you put the work in. She will only explain and answer questions only if they are asked. The textbook isn't necessary however the textbook questions that she provides in the syllabus. In order to do well you must practice problem and go over your notes.
Such a sweet professor. She will answer emails within a reasobale amount of time and help you to the best of her ability. There is only 5 exams, and you are only graded on 2 things; exams and ALEKS.
Prof. Sayahi is a very kind person, but her accent sometimes makes it difficult to understand her, so make sure to pay attention in class. The grading policy is based on exams and Aleks (homework) which isn't terrible. The exams are pretty difficult and sometimes don't correlate with the notes. Study hard and expect random pop quizzes!
unclear grading criteria. Communication is a pain, sometimes hard to get through to her. Aleks is also a pain, the tests are hard and sometimes doesn't correlate to notes. I do not recommend this professor Gen chem 1 or 2 unless you can teach the class to yourself without a problem.
Sayahi really cares about the course BUT, if you don't plan on having to teach yourself outside of class, forget about it. You must attend lecture because the powerpoint slides that she gives do not have half of the info you need to pass. Be prepared to get a tutor
Shes has a thick heavy accent, so if you dont understand then youre screwed, because she doesnt slow down.
shes a nice person, but a terrible teacher. Her grading is so unclear , her tests do not corresponds to the notes, so you have to study hard to get a good grade on tests. Also Aleks is a homework website you have to pay for to do and its so time consuming and annoying. Shes no help at office hours, just go on youtube to understand more.
Thiss the worst professor I had so far at the university. Shes a horrible professor she doesnt use notes or anything! She says its all from the book so you have to read the book to understand her homework! The final exam was very difficult. I dont recommend anyone to take chemistry with her. Awful professor
She's the worst professor I've had. She responds to emails at 3am nearly a month late. She said at the beginning of the semester that we have to learn everything from the textbook. She doesn't help in any other way. Her test questions can be confusing as well. You have to work ridiculously hard and teach yourself the course because she won't.
This class is asynchronous. Beneficial if you have outside chem knowledge. Only about 4 zoom meetings that you don't need to go to. About 9 HW assignments & 5 exams (they're rough). The tests are timed so be careful. Would definitely recommend Cami Tran as a tutor from the CARRS tutoring center. She legit saved my grade. I went from a C to an A.
Is asynchronous so attendance is not mandatory. Doesn't allow backtracking so once you click the next button to go to No. 7 and you remember how to solve any previous question, you can't go back to change it, this is applies to both hw, tests, etc. Half's the mark if you turn hw in a day late. Could report class gc to the school as cheating.
I took this class asynchronously so I didn't really get to know the professor very well. However, she hosted zoom meetings once a week to go over material for the assignments and based on what I observed she is a great teacher! If you do her work and put in effort you're not likely to get less than a B in her class! Use the textbook online!!!
Overall great professor. Online course was well organized and attending her review sessions before an exam helped immensely.
The class is fully online, there are no zoom meetings. She did only a few review sessions and the whole class is: read the textbook, do the homework and do the test. You have to be your own teacher. The schools tutoring program is really helpful and is why I did good.
The course was asynchronous so lectures were not mandatory. Optional lectures were held twice per week. Your grade is based on 4 exams and 8 homework assignments. In order to do well on the exams and the homework assignments, you must read the online textbook and watch the online textbook lecture videos.
Lecture heavy
She is the ONLY lecturer for gen chem 1 and 2. Her lectures are okay. The test are not too bad but you need to study for 1-2 days, 2 hours each. HW assignment every week (will take you at least an hour), 5 question lab quizzes weekly, 6 tests a semester. I recommend having lab late in the week, Thursday is best. No participation assignments/grades.
Dr. Sayahi is my favorite professor of this semester. She puts the exact types of questions that are on the tests on the HW so if you know the HW you are set (no trick questions). There are also videos posted that walks you through every problem that she will give you. She is a very nice lady and an amazing professor!
The tests/quizzes are extremely similar to the homework given. I mainly used the textbook, homework, and Youtube videos to learn this class as lectures are not mandatory.
0/5. she cannot teach. Chemistry is obviously content heavy so if you miss out on a lecture you're behind on a lot of topics. They have this CARSS tutoring thing for gen chem 2 or whatever its called but for most of the semester its full so you really have to rely on yourself to learn the content. There aren't alot of review problems provided
She teaches very well and answers questions in class. I highly recommend using the free online textbook for practice questions. She is not reached easily outside of class because she has so many students. Tests are usually fair (an odd ball here and there). GO TO EVERY LECTURE AND TAKE NOTES! Sit close up, use paper and pen and you will learn.
Worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't know how to teach.
Honestly the worst professor you can get. If you have to take general chem 1 and 2, you're out of luck because she teaches both. Lab is the highlight of the class as it saves your grade. Would not recommend at all.
You can barely hear her during lectures because of how low she speaks. The material thats on the exam is no where similar to what we practice on homework and quizzes. It's EXTREMELY hard to study for her exams because of that reason. No way you can avoid her if you need to take both gen chem 1 and 2 because ualbany has no other chem professors :,)
Dr. Sayahi does lots of practice problems in class and answers questions if asked. Goes at a steady pace when teaching. Homeworks are 1 once a week, but she pushes it back occasionally if the lecture is behind. Around 4-5 tests during the semester, and the final. Tests are similar to homework problems, but can be more difficult than homework.
All the bad ratings are by people that did not put in the effort. They expect easy As or the professor is bad. She is an amazing teacher and knows her stuff. If you watch the YouTube videos provided, do the homework and study from the lecture slides for the exams, you'll do just fine. Chemistry isn't an easy subject so you have to put in the work.
Sayahi is just an ok professor. She is clearly very smart, but doesn't always convey the course topics in the best way. Also you have a decent amount of homework and quizzes and even if you feel really confident with your scores on those, the tests are always completely different and out of range of what was covered. If you need gen chem your stuck
Speaks at the lowest possible volume and is just an OK professor. Nothing special about her, no extra credit opportunities, but is understanding with extensions. Chemistry isn't an easy class but she doesn't really make it better however she is the only professor. 1 homework assignment a week, tests are always on Fridays, doesn't drop grades.
Perhaps this could have been an off year for Sayahi. I was in both her CHM 115-116 courses. Her tests are ungodly and are based off of problems we barely used before with no practice provided on the homework assignments. Lab portion of your grade will save you. Sayahi can't teach and sets her students up to fail. Steer clear from her if possible.
The class is not difficult if you went to the lecture. 90% of people didnt go to class and complained about failing tests. The tests are quite literally questions pulled from the graded HW and lecture questions (which she will not provide unless u go to class). If you ask questions and went to the lecture. Easy A by all means
Dr. Sayahi is a very straight forward professor, she has never put trick questions on exams and if she sees that a lot of people got one question wrong she will give credit for it. This is my second time having her and she actually made me understand and enjoy chemistry like I never have before.
Be alert in class as she is a fast passed teacher; the coursework is what you would expect from gen chem. If science isn't a strong point go to office hours for extra help. Labs are conjoined in the grade so they help boost. Tests are generally short and are based directly on HW problems. Drops lowest quiz & HW grade not tests and has a class curve
She is a bit fast in lecture but will stop for questions and explain if you ask the material is a bit challenging but just go over lecture and homework problems as that is what the test is made from. Go to class if you miss a day you will be lost so don't skip she also is available for 1 on 1s during office hours. There is an overall curve as well.
Only online office hours; impossible to calculate grade yourself and know if youre passing or failing before end of semester
Crams so much into one lecture and tests on large amounts of information. Only has online office hours. Goes fast and sometimes skips steps. Wont know your grade or if youre passing or failing until the end of the semester.
She is a very sweet lady Im not gonna lie. But, the way she explains things are terrible. I wouldn't take her again but she's the only chem professor and she teaches Achm 116 as well. When studying the hw questions are going to be your best friend honestly. Do your best, but Im telling you now unless you're good at chem; its going to be hard.
Dr. Sayahi is an eh lecturer. She tends to be a little disorganized and scrambled. Lots of exams which count for 11% of your grade. The problems you see on the exam are tough and she doesnt do a lot do examples in class which kind of screws you over. Wouldnt take again but unfortunately she is the only one who teaches gen chem 1 & 2.
This class is quite easy if you have basic chemistry and math knowledge from high school and the lowest homework and quiz grades are dropped. Lectures are straight forward (but NOT to the point) so you don't really need to read the textbook before class. 6 Tests (worth 11% each), 8 quizzes (10% ), and 9 homeworks (5%). Lowest HW and quiz dropped.
Lectures are not always very clear, tests are hard, lab is not hard but time consuming and not very fun. Overall she is not a very good lecturer and you will have to put in a lot of effort outside the class if you want to get a good grade.
A bit fast paste and a bit unorganized but is still an ok professor
Sayahi is great at explaining things in a way that you actually understand. She also has a lot of patience when students ask questions. Chemistry is a hard subject, so you will have to put in extra effort outside of class regardless of the professor. She's a bit boring, but at least you understand the material, which is the ultimate goal.
Don't bother going to class; she doesn't teach anything you'll be tested on. Homework and practice problems go together, but the tests are entirely different. This class was a headache, wasted time, and confusing beyond belief.
The lectures were miserable and slow. Many times we took a test without finishing the chapter. Most of your grade comes from exams which are fair for the most part. Tests are similar to the homework assigned to each chapter; however, exams have 1-2 challenging problems that she only shows solutions to in lectures. The posted HW videos are helpful.
Class so difficult to follow. Tests have barely anything to do with the material. Reads off of slides.
There are five tests worth 11% given during the semester and then the final is worth roughly the same. The homework is typically once a week, although some weeks there is none. She is clear in her teaching and while the lectures are boring, you can just study the slides to do well. People on here act like this class is the worst but it's not bad!
It was little to no participation of students during lectures, and lectures would almost never be arranged with the labs so be prepared to be lost doing them. It's mostly a teach yourself type of course since the lectures be packed and she's not loud/clear enough for you to understand the content.
Don't get me wrong, I do like Sayahi as a professor. However, the review and questions on the tests that we are given are purely malicious. There is no way to get over a test average of 65% in this class unless you go the extra mile. Hell, ten miles. Course material rarely prepares you for the tests.
Prof. Sayahi is an amazing professor. She is thorough, patient, and makes a point to get to know her students. She goes at perfect pace in lecture and only 1 hw assignment a week, allowing multiple attempts. If you attend lecture & get help when needed, it is easy. She shouldn't be criticized for lab probs; she doesn't run the labs.
Boring lectures, but that's a given for chemistry. Has an accent which makes it hard to follow along at times. Can be unclear about instructions. Be prepared for lots of homework and to hate lab
Dr. Sayahi is a great professor, she wants all of her students to do well and is always willing to help students. Tests are heavy, and they make up more than 60 percent of your grade. GO TO CLASS, she uses examples in class that arent always on the slide. Final grade is curved.
Literally the worst experience of my life. Lectures are awfully boring and exams are entirely lecture based so if you dont understand it you are screwed. Lab is so boring and time consuming. HW is hard and its so demotivating that it only counts as 5%. Overall you will be miserable in this class and I truly wish all chem students luck (you need it)
Lectures could put you to sleep, she reads off the slides and does some examples but they usually dont help much. You have to attend EVERY lecture if you want a test average above 60%, no exceptions to that. You also are going to have to teach yourself most of the material multiple times if you truly want to be prepared. awful overall experience
Sayahi and the lab coordinator do not coordinate at all. Sayahi makes the exams and the lab coordinator makes the exam practice material. Because they split it up in this way, what you study from the given practice sheets do not prepare you for the exams in any way. BUT if you miss an exam, she is pretty understanding and will allow makeups.
you have to practice chemistry in order to succeed: showing up to lectures, taking notes, studying office hours and tutoring provided by the school. if you do this you will succeed. points off because she needs to make more writing space on the exam given all the math and lecture should be longer.
Didnt go over the math parts well
I can't speak for everyone, but many of the bad ratings are from people who aren't willing to put in the time that chem takes to master. Her slides can be unclear if you skip class, which many people do, and don't do the examples with her. She's a great teacher, and kind & patient when helping you. Her tests are hard, but you can excel with practice!
She is an awesome professor that explains material in depth in lecture times (even if she is rushed by the clock). She holds office hours for many hours during the week, and answers questions with you slowly step by step, and will constantly check up on you during the problem to see if you follow. Just don't miss lectures, and PRACTICE!
The lectures are dull and boring, there's minimal participation and because it's just chem in general but if you miss any lectures you can go watch the video links in the hw section as that's mostly what's going to be on the test. Be consistent with turning work in and practice hw questions before exams and there's not much there could go wrong.
the only professor you can take gen chem with and I'm honestly gonna pray for you , the accent is super heavy and she has a way of explaining things that will leave you utterly confused to the point where everyone stop showing up, the labs are pretty easy and 8 times outta 10 your gonna pass. test reviews are no help so teach yourself
Sayahi is a sweet person overall however, what she discusses in class makes it hard to understand sometimes. 6 tests, 8-10 homeworks depending on how far you get into the semester and lab of course and about 6 quizzes. Lowest quiz and homework dropped.
Professor Sayahi clearly cares about Chemistry, but classes are 55 minutes of lecture. Slides are posted and there's no attendance, so you can skip classes. Tests are about 70% math and 30% conceptual knowledge and are hard because of the amount of information covered. But, there are bonus questions on every test, and your final grade is curved.
Attendance is not mandatory/graded, so it got to a point where I already had to reteach myself the material for the tests through the lecture slides, and I ended up just never going to class and it was a great decision for me. The homework questions are the same style as the quizzes which are the same style as the tests. Lab is super easy
Professor Sayahi is a very nice woman cares about Chem. Her tests are relatively easy and she curved most. Its easy to get an A if you do aright of the tests and great in lab, hw and quizzes. Overall not a hard class at all. Attendance isn't mandatory so you can honestly just teach everything to yourself.
Professor Sayahi loves chemistry and it makes the class more interesting if you enjoy the class, but she isn't the best with big lectures you should definitely go to her office hours and homework help if you want to do better and fully understand what happens.
Test heavy course. Most the exams consist of math that is taught in lectures. If you aren't good at math this course will be rough. She has a thick accent so she is a little hard to understand, be prepared to teach yourself most of the course from the posted slides.
Dr. Sayahi is excellent - a patient, no-nonsense professor. Her lectures are clear and to the point, and she works through many practice Qs in lecture that are akin to the questions asked of us on the tedious chapter homeworks/weekly quizzes/exams. Gen Chem is too easy, however; Organic I will be a dramatic wake-up call.
Great professor, goes over your test in office hours. I barely attended lecture bc I don't learn like that. Lecture is her going over definitions + concepts with a few practice problems. To get good grades on my test I did the chapters practice problem set and hw, alternating between each for 1 week straight. Her exam review is hard but helpful.
She did nothing to help me even when I showed up to all tutoring and office hour opportunities
This class can be tough, but stay engaged and utilize resources like unstuck study for study prep. The prof is passionate, but the accent takes some getting used to. Skip class at your own risk - the exams are math-heavy.
This professor is nice, however she does not give alot of practice so it is a very time consuming topic
Difficult course, but is a very caring professor. She rushes through material at an insane rate. Exams are biweekly, in person, math heavy,& difficult w/weekly HW. Attendance is not mandatory but skip at your own risk (she'll never review a concept twice). Some resources outside of class, free textbook&online videos but the only ACHM115/6 prof.
I felt the class was moving to quickly without explanation most of the time.
Sayahi is overall a great professor. She has clear lectures, clear grading criteria and overall, a welcoming professor. This is a chemistry course so it may be harder for some in comparison to others. My advice, attend her lectures, ask questions, and put in the work. If you put in the hard work, you will receive the grade you want.
Great, Kind professor, you get what you put in—content-heavy lectures with lots of practice problems. You will not do well if you don't go. All exams except the final were curved but generally fair. Homework due (almost) every week. Decent amount of practice problems and study material and you can always email or go to her office hours.
Dr. Sayahi is lecturer and her lectures are very comprehensive, even sometimes too slow. Her exams were all multiple choice and fairly easy. I recommend watching the online lectures on the Ualbany Chem Lab youtube channel if you missed lecture or need extra help with a chapter!
Many negative reviews come from those who aren't putting in the time needed to master chemistry. Her slides can be unclear if you skip class and miss the examples. She's a great, patient teacher, and while tests are tough, you can succeed with practice. Bonus points and helpful homework and lecture problems make it easier to excel!
I love Professor Sayahi she really cares about her students, she would give bonus points if u went to office hours and went over your exam really nice and overall great professor, her practice problems in lecture and on homework were almost identical to her exams. Wish she taught organic chem
Professor Sayahi is a very good professor she gives bonus points if you go to office hours to review ur exam, homework is easy and very helpful questions are very similar to exams and her lectures have lots of practice problems that are really helpful. Most of the bad reviews are from kids who are not willing to put any effort in her class.
As long as you show up to lectures and put in the work, this class really is not that bad. She's always available for her office hours and curves the tests. She'll always answer questions in class and make sure you understand it properly. Overall one of the best science teachers here
Dr Sayahis class is so doable if you just do the practice questions over and over and have chat gpt form similar ones. Prepare to study a week in advance for exams. She's so kind and offers extra credit at her office hours after tests if you go to go over everything with her. Go to her office hours, lectures, and practice you'll do fine.
Make sure you are paying attention and studying outside of class. It is very important to stay on top of information each lecture that is given. Prof. Sayahi gives step by step instructions but paying attention and staying off of your phone will keep you up to date with every topic. The deadline and homework are extremely helpful.
Amazing professor was very lecture based though, attendance is not mandatory but I could not have passed the class without attending every lecture, she often solves problems during lecture that you wouldn't see in the slides. Also very kind and accessible outside of class
