doesnt care for your grade
Professor Shaffer shows that she does care about her students learning the material. The homework comes from the book, but the test and quizzes come from what she lectured on in class. The class is hard, but if you put in the effort youll be fine. Attendance isnt technically mandatory but problems given in class are graded.
I would not recommend Dr. Shaffer as a professor. You can tell she is smart but does not do well explaining material. The average for our most recent test was 68% and she still did not curve it. She also recently has made all of the the lectures online half way though the semester. Lots of time consuming HW. Choose someone else.
This class is horrible. Half way through the semester she changed her teaching style, and she seems lazy with what she does. She doesn't give quizzes anymore because people complain too much. She also hasn't curved anything even when the average grade is failing. If your taking this good luck.
Dr. Shaffer is ok she changed her style of teaching because the grades were low so i think that means she cares about your grade a little but she's definitely not accessible, no extra credit, lots of hw and the class is just hard so good luck
Professor Shaffer is very non-personal and hard to learn from. This was her first year teaching a large class and it was evident that she struggled. She was inconsiderate of errors on her part, and changed her lectures mid semester. If she curves the end grades, I will be content. However, I do not feel I have learned much at all. Take someone else
Schaffer is super smart and you can tell that she LOVES chemistry. PowerPoints with examples for the topics/problems are used during lectures. She doesn't really spend time making sure that you understand what she's teaching. After it's taught, you're pretty much on your own. YouTube/tutorials will be your best bestfriend. STUDY or FAIL.
Dr. Shafer is very professional and kind. She knows her stuff and is willing to teach you if you put in the effort. She is an overall fair grader. The only problem I had was, she moves very fast through the material and could leave you confused. Have to spend a lot of time in the book and online doing practice and taking notes.
Please save your money and time. She is ridiculous. Goes by the material so fast you don't even know what you're doing. Half the class is always lost and failing. Be expected to teach yourself through this course because she won't. Her "study guides" aren't even study guides and don't prepare you at all for the tests which are difficult.
This proffesor expects you to know all of the material and is not very thorough with explaining hard material, since she is very knowledgeable herself about the material she does not go over every step.
This was her first year teaching at a big university and she didn't understand how to teach a class of 200. She is a nice lady but she struggled dumbing down chemistry for us because she is so smart. There is a lot of homework, quizzes, and exams. . You have to come to class to get participation points for a grade. If you don't study, you will fail
If you need chem, do NOT take Shaffer. Shes unorganized, unprofessional, and changed her teaching style in the middle of the semester. She messed up on multiple quizzes and homework questions and wouldnt correct her mistakes because if were straight A students, it shouldnt matter. I wouldnt recommend her class to anyone, please dont take it
Don't take her. She rushed through a lot of lectures and had us teach ourselves some chapters. She changed her teaching style in the middle of the semester because the test grades were low. she doesnt curve anything, no matter how low the grades are. She gives lots of homework and quizzes. She makes mistakes and doesn't give us credit for it.
I mostly taught myself everything in this class. Attendance isn't required, but every class we have participation assignments that count as a grade, so I recommend showing up. As long as you complete and study her homework and power points for the tests, you'll be fine. Lowest test dropped. The final is curved, so don't be intimidated by it.
She would have been an okay prof if she didn't switch up her teaching style mid-semester from lectures to online and that threw us off. Helps that the lowest test is dropped, but still. Lots of homework, and you don't get unlimited tries on it so be careful. Gen chem material isn't that hard if you study, but I still wouldn't take her again.
She is obviously a really smart lady and I respect her knowledge but her lecture style is very hard to understand. Its almost like shes too smart to teach to beginners. In her class, be ready to self teach and READ THE TEXTBOOK! She does care and wants you to succeed. She will answer any questions you have if you meet with her outside of class.
If you are doing Nursing, turn away. I mean this with all my heart, I wouldn't take her if it was the last class I needed to get my degree. I would go through transferring to another school then to ever take another class from her. Material is already hard and with the instruction being online due to the virus she makes it even harder...
Dr. Hally Shaffer was an amazing chem teacher. A lot of people who are giving her bad reviews, did not put in the time and effort into this class. This class is HARD but you have to take the time out to study weeks before the exam. Attendance is not mandatory but she does give points for attendance which boosts your grade up so go to class!
DONT TAKE! If you want to save your GPA dont do it! With the whole epidemic going on, Tests arent even fair anymore. Shes so focused on people cheating and YOU CANT! There is absolutely NO WAY to cheat chemistry! And she fails to understand that , so the material is no longer fair! Since the change this class is HARDER THAN HARD! Walk away
I see a lot of students today had it up to here. These reviews are so accurate I cannot explain enough. No remorse, changes her teaching style, doesnt lecture... oh and if your impacted by the virus, its too bad. Save your time, these professors are paid with our money but cannot help their students... choose another professor, its not worth it
Turn away! Turn away! Turn away! Yes, at time she can be nice but she does not know how to lecture, her tests are hard and with the conversion to online she is making the tests harder than it needs to be because she thinks we will cheat when its impossible too. If you dont know your stuff youll fail period ! YOU CANNOT CHEAT!
Chemistry is hard, I have been maintaining an A but since we moved to online it has been Extremely difficulty being 45 it is not easy but the tests are impossible now. We get practice exams and nothing was really related like it use to be. I believe shes too focused on students cheating when you just cantt. You have to know your material
This is a self taught class, youtube was my professor this whole semester. Tests were hard but manageable up until we switched to online. She is so focused on people cheating that we can even get a fair test, in that case just enable the webcam on the lockdown browser. Ridiculous. For anybody who gave her good reviews this must be their only class
Reading the good reviews is true you have to apply yourself in this class or you wont pass. The bad reviews recently is due to the fact so many students in my class we are pulling As & Bs but now its unfair testing material. Now we are in the Bs & Cs in the last 2 weeks of class, its a shame I will never take her again.
Challenging, I see she cares its just shown with more difficulty of things which is odd but its just her way. If your good at adjusting to multiple changes go for it!
Stay away!
Great professor. She mainly lectures but explains things multiple times so you can actually learn the material. She listens to the students feedback and always answers questions if you have them. The tests are really hard so unless you have perfect memory, studying is a must.
I dont recommend her for Chem1151. She teaches/grades like students are professional chemists, not nursing students. 99% of the students were pre-nursing. She said she curves grades at the end and then did not. Math heavy. She is smart but not good at teaching concepts to students. Most people dropped, many others failed. Take another professor.
Agree with other posters. Take another professor. Not good at teaching beginner students, would be better for upper chemistry. Teaching style inconsistent. Definitely agree she made tests harder once covid19 made class go online. Told class all semester she would curve grade, but nope. Final dropped most down a full letter grade, no curve. RUN!!!
Shaffer has a great knowledge of chem and is passionate. You will not learn from lectures because she provides videos where the lesson is taught. Lectures are more for questions you have after you've watched the vids/ taken the notes. If you can handle this, the course is relatively easy. Do not expect an easy A here, study!
Not good at teaching material at all! No matter how often I watched the lectures, I didn't understand it. Huge disconnect between homework and tests - all As on homework, D or F on tests. HW helped me pull a C in here, but I really never understood the material. Retaking with another professor really showed how her teaching stinks in comparison.
Take her for chemistry lab! She gives useful information and explains how to do the lab reports. If you ever need help she will answer emails and does want the best for everyone.
Had to take class online this summer because of coronavirus. Wish I had waited until fall semester to take with another professor. Professor is nice and passionate about chemistry but is NOT a good teacher. She assigns lots of homework and tests are ridiculously hard. No sympathy for struggling students. Bad choice for GPA. 100% Self taught.
Nursing Major? Look away and take a better professor and have patience.
Thinking about, maybe the just didn't do their work or work hard? Go ahead and take her if you want. 77 percent of students off group me got a C. Ill let you decide
She was a great instructor. She definitely helped me when it came to explaining the notes. And I also attended the SI sessions because chemistry isnt my strongest subject. Even so, she was very helpful and had great materials and videos that helped me pass. 10/10 recommend
Chemistry is a really hard class but people don't give this professor enough credit. She posts lectures for every chapter that go into detail of each topic. The homework is hard but it prepares you for the tests. If you study and put in the work, this class will be no problem. If you want to do the bare minimum and expect to pass, you won't.
Dr. Shaffer is a very good teacher. She teaches mainly off her PowerPoints. Makes each test based off the material that she teaches. Out of 4 regular exams 3 count and your lowest is dropped. The final is awful and the national avg. is in the 60s. However, she knows this and gives everyone enough points to have the grade they had before the final
She was great! You definitely have to study before exams but her lectures are so amazing! Mostly just two small projects, homework & exam grades. However she is stern in her deadlines and shows no mercy. Answers questions and emails fast. The SI is helpful also.
had to take her for online because of COVID. Horrible choice. She makes chemistry lectures, but will not go beyond that. I would email her for help, but never received it. If you want to take her be my guest, but I recommend looking for another professor.
You can tell Prof. Shaffer teaches what she loves; she tries to make a hard subject easily accessible and "not scary" for her students. Multiple pre-recorded lectures for each chapter (15-30+min each), homework was not too difficult. Exams were challenging, those mid-semester chapters get TOUGH. Make time to study! Go to her Zoom weekly reviews.
please don't listen to the bad reviews! she's a super sweet professor who truly loves chemistry. I'm not great at sitting through lectures but she always stays after to see if anyone needs help. Shaffer would tell us clearly what to know and what not for every exam and quiz if you asked her & in comparison to other ochem profs. she's the easiest!
If you're stuck deciding between shaffer and meades, shaffer is the way to go for ochem. She is way easier and you're graded on more things so you have a better chance of ending with a higher grade. Shaffers tests were easier and she really tries to help you understand the material. She tells you what to pay attention to and what to study for.
she is amazing, please don't listen to the bad reviews! She's an amazing teacher and her class is very straightforward. she dropped hints for quiz an exam questions and she explains the concepts very well. She will curve the entire class' final grade by at least four points after the final exam. Take her!!!!
She is a nice and caring professor but she doesn't give any extra credit and doesn't care about your grade at all. She goes over the Homework in class and makes you watch her lecture videos on your own time outside of class. In all honest I wouldn't recommend this Professor but if you have to take her, make sure you go to the SI tutoring sessions.
I'm currently enrolled in professor Shaffer's lecture, and i'm enjoying it. Sometimes it can be stressful because chemistry is a hard subject, but Shaffer tries her best to explain the material. She post lecture videos and videos covering each chapter before the material is taught in class. Her practice exams are just like the actual exam.
You really learn everything from the video lectures which are 3-4 videos per chapter and are like 40 minutes long. you don't need to go to her lectures unless you want to understand more of the info that she goes over in the videos. The homework is kind of hard but she has videos that explain and gives answers to it. She also does them in lecture.
I loved Professor Shaffer. She truly cared about her students and was available to answer any questions when you weren't sure. Chemistry is a very hard subject for me, and she helped me a lot with explaining concepts! I would recommend her to anyone taking 1211!
You dont have to go to class she makes lectures videos that are 40 minutes long. You basically learn from the videos in class. all she does is go over hw questions. her teaching methods werent helpful to me. 4 quizzes, 12 hw assignments and a final. go to her SI sessions because they really help . used online textbook for hw
This class is heavy on her lecture videos posted on D2L, honestly, if you just keep up with the videos and don't fall behind with them, you will be fine. Not sure why her rate is so low, she is honestly a perfectly fine teacher and I would take her again. She's not hard at all if you put in some effort.
Do not take her if you wanna teach yourself, her practice exams are exactly like the exams but her final exam is state standard with no guidance but a book you have to buy on your own. Everything is on your own and your grade is barely curved. She gives no extra credit. Her teaching sucks
You learn content from the lectures she pre-records and posts online. Her in-class lectures only consist of her doing the homework. It's about 75% self taught. She posts practice exam which are SO helpful. Get a solid study group, be prepared to watch hours of lecture at home and practice is key. Not a BAD teacher. My study group and I got A's.
Guys shes a great professor for chemistry! her practice tests are very helpful and her teaching is clear. the hw is a bit challenging but she is usually always helpful and does a lot of hw with you in class. i would recommend taking her lecture !
Dont know why Dr. Shaffer has a such low rating. She is an overall excellent Professor. She gives detailed modules, hosts a virtual meeting on Teams once a week (not mandatory) if you need help. She is quite lenient with late submission of homework and also resets it if you need her to, but you need to email her first. No explanation needed.
Lectures are her going over homework questions for the most part. She wants us to watch almost 2 hrs worth of videos before each lecture. Quizzes are only about 3-4 questions.Tests are meh. No extra credit and no test drops, replacements or curves. She said the avg final exam grade is a 50 so…yay! If you like your GPA, do NOT take this class.
Professor Shaffer is an amazing Chem 1152 professor. She records her lectures so you do not have to be there in person, but attendance is mandatory for tests/quizzes. There are homework assignments but she helps in class with them so it is an easy 100 and an excellent grade booster. There are 3 tests and a final and 4 quizzes. Super sweet professor
I had her for chem 1151 online. She had very helpful lecture videos posted for every chapter. There was homework on mastering chemistry every week. There are 4 tests. The lowest test is dropped. She gives very helpful study guides. The final is 30% of your grade. If you do your work and actively learn then you'll be fine.
AMAZING! Literally failed chem 1 because of monroe. i thought i was bad at chem but her teaching style is really good. She made everything make sense and I got an A! 4 tests plus and final but she curves final. Homework but she does it with you so automatic good grade for the homework category. drops one quiz but there are only 4 and so easy.
She is a great professor, very understanding and gives great lectures. Always answers questions respectfully and is obviously very educated. She is understanding but strict with extensions/grading. Definitely watch all of the videos and do the homework.
I really enjoyed prof shaffers class. Im not sure why her rating is so low. Her way of teaching is she post videos and we have to watch them. Most of class we do the homework, which is great because you get extra practice and a good homework grade, it also allows you to get a good hw grade. you have to be willing to put work in.
Dr. Shaffer is a very fair professor. No extra credit assignments were given as she is not obligated to give anyone extra credit. She posts lecture videos on D2L that go thoroughly over the power points and were filled with practice problems. There's no reason you should earn less than a B in this class. Watch the videos and ask questions.
10/10 take her for lab!!! She does not make you put everything in your notebook like other professors and genuinely cares about you understanding the content. She goes over the lab at the very beginning so make sure you show up on time. She explains lab report questions too to clear up any confusion and is willing to go over anything. Easy grader.
- There is a lot of mandatory homework, but she goes over most of the problems either in class or in her videos posted in D2L - She posts all of her lectures online - I would not take her class again because she explains everything in a confusing way compared to other professors - She does not curve tests, but she does drop a test grade
Dr. Shaffer was an amazing lab professor. I had her late night lab and I was dreading that class but she made it worth it. She genuinely wants you to understand the material and she goes the extra mile to make sure that you get what you need from the lab. Wound up being one of my favorite classes because of her despite the class being so late.
An AMAZING lab professor. I took her for a late-night lab (8 pm- 10:30 pm), and she was willing to stay late if anyone had any questions about the lab report. She made the class simple in terms of what needed to be in the lab book and a good class to be in. she helped me understand the material.
TAKE.THIS.CLASS! Professor Shaffer is by far my favorite professor. Chemistry is hard but she gave us more than enough help with everything. Her lecture videos are very easy to follow, and she held a recorded class once a week to help with homework and any questions you have. She even gives you an extra week to do the homework. LOVED her class.
Her class was ok. There are no opportunities for extra credit which sucks. I took this course online so there were a lot of resources ( google meet once a week and videos explaining almost everything) to aid you. I would just recommend staying on top of things because the course material get hard fast.
I don't know why so many people are giving her a bad score. I took chem1151 in the fall with a different professor and made a C. So going into Organic I was very nervous. Organic is a more difficult class in general but I adore professor Shaffer. I have an 89 in her class and in my opinion if you study you shouldn't get anything lower than a B.
Don't be scared by her rating score! I took her for Organ Chem and she has been excellent. Her class is a switched class, lectures at home, and does homework in class. She cares a lot and will make sure you succeed. She does go fast, but you can ask her before she starts to slow down and she will. She is so great, I would retake her.
I like her, only thing that might be hard she makes you watch video lectures before class. So like 2, 30-50 min videos twice a week, sometimes less. Which may be hard if your taking A&P at same time. She goes over practically all the HW in class and she'll allow you to reset your HW so you can get a better score. Very enthusiastic and energetic.
Dr. Shaffer is a good teacher, but I understand why her reviews are so low. Don't take this professor if you aren't willing to dedicate 4-6 hours a week taking notes & watching lecture videos at home. She is a good teacher and explains things well but if you can't, find a different professor because procrastination in this class isn't possible.
I had her for 8pm lab and she would let us stay after to take the quiz and get help from her if we needed it. She grades the labs and hands them back the following week. She's super chill and she tries to learn people's names and cares when they're sick and can't make it. Take her for lab!!
This professor prepares every student how to be successful on each test by adding lecture videos. These videos are perfect for understanding all the difficult concepts. I highly recommend this professor! Take her!
I love professor shaffer! she cares about her students and does everything in her power to make sure you do good. she goes over the hw and will reset it if you ask, so you really shouldn't get lower than an A on it.
I took this exact class in the Fall of 2022 and struggled so much and received a D. I retook this course with professor Schaffer and received an A. She is a very passionate and knowledgeable professor and she not only provided the correct methods and answers; she also provided common mistakes that could be made and why those would be wrong.
I took her for Chem 1151 & 1152. her method of teaching chem is very clear & concise. She prepared us for her exams very well. The final exam is supposed to have high failures, but lots of people passed, which reflects her teaching! Practice the material!! Memorize what you want to write on your test scratch paper for the test, helped so much!
Plays mass effect.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE OTHER PRIORITIES!!! Poll everywhere every day, four exams, homework due each week, and reading check every other week. I'm halfway through the semester and struggling BAD. I work 20-30 hours and have 4 other classes, all the assignments are easy until you get to the exams. No extra credit either.
I took Honors and AP Chem in high school, so this class is a breeze for me. However, if I were a student learning the material for the first time I would love to take Professor Shaffer. She breaks down material in a very understanding and engaging way. We have weekly homework and quizzes and take 4 exams and a final throughout the semester.
This professor makes it known that you need to study, but the class was not that hard. She really tries to make sure you pass and is great at explaining chem. Her tests are extremely straightforward without any tricks and the homework is mainly completion graded. TBH most of the ppl that failed in my class were the ones that didn't show up
Shes pretty cool and like.. normal. Not too bad at all. Didn't too much like chemistry but this class made me like it more. Sometimes she does participation but she also goes over HW questions.
I honestly think that Dr. Shaffer is an amazing teacher. She explains the content very well. I will say that the work outside of class can be time consuming. We have at least 3 videos to watch weekly and online homework among other things. I don't really see why she has a low score on here, but I really do recommend her.
Professor Shaffer was a great chemistry teacher. She teaches from slides (which are provided to students with blanks to fill in) and gives ample examples. Be aware of the tests though. I got 95's on the first three, then bombed the fourth and got a B in the class. So the class is very test heavy. If you go to class and pay attention you should pass
She was a great teacher. I suck at chemistry, but I somehow ended with an A. Her lectures were great, and she answered any questions I had perfectly. She does participation once a week, so make sure you attend the lectures. The classes are short though so make sure you're on time because she goes through content fast.
Good and organized but I did not like her teaching style
I loved Professor Shaffer. Her class was easy for me since I had a little experience with chemistry before college. She is one of those professors where if you ask questions, she will help you in the course. There is weekly readings and homeworks so it could be time consuming but sometimes you do homework in class. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
As a professor she was very good and kept class engaging, but if you miss multiple classes it will harm your grade. There is a decent amount of homework that sometimes takes a while to complete. Make sure to pay attention in class and make an effort to study outside of class or else the tests will be difficult.
Overall Dr. Shaffer is alright. This course is difficult and she gets that. But she assigns so much out-of-class work. She expects her students to watch the lectures before coming to class and finish a "reading check" over them. Then the homework is due the same week. Just be ready to spend 5+ hours a week outside of class on the material.
GREAT, she explains chemistry in such a good way and cares about her students. She will help you succeed, she explains everything in a clear way for anyone taking chemistry for the first time. TAKE HER if you can
You have to watch lecture videos, do reading checks and homework outside of class. But she was amazing with helping me learn the material. Shes funny and keeps the class engaged, super nice lady. Attendance is a big part of your grade!
She was a decent professor but I do feel like she tended to speak too fast and not explain some things in enough detail, assuming we already know it. She was a bit rude to me over a simple mistake I made but I wont get into it. Just make sure you study a lot outside of class and you should pass.
I would recommend this professor a thousand times over! Possessing a PhD doesn't mean you're necessarily cut out to be a teacher… But Shaffer is truly a teacher at heart. Her mind works at the speed of light. Yet, she's humble and doesn't take herself too seriously. If you're willing to put in the work, she'll go above and beyond to help you.
Professor Shaffer explains concepts clearly and cares about student success. While the class has a decent workload, using resources like unstuck ai can really help with study prep. Just make sure to stay engaged in class and you'll do well.
She is a great professor. Very passionate. Loves her job. Yes she speaks fast and brushes over some things but she is very happy to explain things in detail if asked. I found lab very easy when I just skimmed over the manual beforehand. I would highly reccomend. My fav professor this semester by far
