A professor with explanation based on mostly the powerpoint presentation. There are tests IN A Tutorial, where we have to understand the parts we don't within an hour. Although the schedule is packed, it's ok to learn..if you know what your doing.
Seems like a nice guy, but cannot teach chemistry. Talks very softly and gets everything from the textbook. Quizzes weren't too bad if you studied. When asked to clarify something, very hard to understand. To do well, just read the textbook!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn't answer questions, can't speak up so everyone can hear, despite numerous requests!! Doesn't really teach you anything, VERY unreasonable tests with material that is hardly covered. His lecture notes are from the textbooks. He basically reads them to you. Very disappointing. How is this suppose to prepare us for higher level courses????
Talking softly ain't gonna help our learning experience. First experience in York, and this prof reallllly talks soft, and you can't even hear him well. Babbling around questions that students ask. I like better of the Chem Lab Prof Satoshi than him. WAY Better at understanding and helping stuffs. Not recommended for first year students.
Very nice guy, honest and pias. Very religious as well, speaking one on one will definatly help. Speaks a little softly, but very proud of him.
Hes a nice guy, tries hard to explain although expects u to understand the first time. His tests arent too hard, but his teaching method isnt to great. Also he does not answer students questions directly/logically.
this is supposed to be an intro course and the university should hire a prof who can actually explain properly not a prof like him who cant even teach and it just ruins students life. he cant explain well or answer any questions there was a point when student asked him a question n he took the solution of the solution book and put it on the board
this prof does a crap job of explaining concepts. he just reads his slides that are identical to the text. there is zero elaboration or explanation of concepts. lectures are a waste of time because of this. I resent York for hiring him to teach an intro to chemistry, since students require a solid foundation in the first years to progress.
BEst Proff ive ever had....lectures are very clear and easy to follow
His tests are easy, but he is just confusing! I agree with others here - his teaching doesn't really extend past his slides, and his examples (straight from book) don't cover everything we need to know for tests. Because of this, it's hard to do well on those "easy" tests without seeking additional help from outside the course.
He seems to be very lazy and somewhat disorganized. His online lecture notes are inconsistant, he avoids having to write out problems on the blackboard even when students ask him too. This was suppose to be an intro to chemistry course, the professor did not explain the material very clearly at all. Now I fell unprepared for future Chem courses.
worst professor ive ever had. really hard to understand, would never take the time to explain any questions the students had. i think i understand the same amount of chemistry as i did before i ever took the class. seriously, get out while you can.
This prof has a very heavy accent. Someone with such a heavy accent should NOT be teaching an introductory chemistry course. He was hard to understand. He seems like a nice guy but he reads right off of his lecture slides. His lecture slides were very disorganized. He also spoke very quietly even though he spoke over a mic. Take it in high school.
His teaching in class didn't go beyond the text. Most of the students didn't understand the material even when it was in the text in front of them. Dr. Mirza, I think, didn't sufficiently prepare for this class (his first time teaching it, by my understanding). He tried to help lazy students. He got pushed around. Nice guy. Strong Indian accent :(
confusing, disorganised but really nice and polite... jumps around from topic to topic even when you try to ask specific questions
He is a super nice guy ALWAYS helpful and friendly if you have questions and almost always explains the concepts if you talk to him after class Somewhat difficult to understand due to the accent but hes approchable and cares about the students even tho he gets teased around a bit. IF you have questions or dont uncerstand, just talk to him privatey
All comments are pretty accurate. Good intentions, but he lacks teaching abilities, and then people do poorly on his tests, although they're not too difficult. An unfair situation. At the very least, hire someone else other than the prof to lead the tutorials so we might actually have a chance to learn something about chemistry.
Easiest tests in the world But classes are so boring. Dwells too long on easy topics and needs to pick up the pace.
Easiest tests in the world But classes are so boring. Dwells too long on easy topics and needs to pick up the pace.
Basically, taught myself the course, gives NO examples or logical explanations. He copys and pastes examples from the text onto his slides. His english is terrible and he moves way too fast through complicated chapters... tests would be easy if he gave examples or some sort of outline
awful
He is very helpful and really wants you to do well. His tests are easy but practice and understand. His lecture is about understanding the concepts(he told me that and it's true) I disagree with the negative comments posted. He is nice and his lectures can be fun if you listen and want to learn. Can't wait to take his lecture again. =]
obviously those who are leaving positive comments have had a good understanding of chemistry or have taken it in highschool before taking his course. this is an INTRO TO CHEM. Dr. Mirza teaches the course as though everyone knowledge of chemistry therefore he does not explain or teach the material in a manner which is suffient for the course.
great prof i learned more in his class than i did on my own reading the text! One on one help really pushed me along!! he explains things in a way I dont forget...so to all those who comlain about clarity just go and ask him during office hours...thats what those hours are for
His English is terrible, and his class is like a public cafe. Took him 3 weeks to finish one easy chapter, then spent only 2 weeks for 4 complicate chapters just because he was behind the schedule . Worst teacher EVER!!
absolutely abismal professor cannot speak an ounce of englsih without the guide of the textbook. which all his slides are from. Try asking him a question hell look at you like a deer in the headlights. i am specifically transferring schools to take chem becasue i dont want him as my prof. doesn't understand it was a beginner course. Good luck.
This prof is terrible. If you have him, then RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
Tests are easy, just watch out for the conversions. Lectures are straight from the slides so you don't need to go. However, it's useful to attend the 2 classes before tests so that you can pick up hints for what will be on it. He has an accent, but he speaks good english. Nice and gives out candy for correct answers.
Oh boy... he made me walk in loving chemistry and walking out not wanting to see it ever again. He was always very unclear about what's on the test. His website his useless and he posts the marks on his office door! He often makes mistakes marking exams so watch out. Approachable nonetheless and may be helpful outside class. Hard exams!
very boring and monotone teacher. basically teaches off the slides so going to class is not necessary but he often gives hints on upcoming tests. other than that, tests are pretty easy compared to other chem profs. if you can really understand what he is saying through his accent or study from chem book/slides you can ace his class.
HORRIBLE professor! DO NOT TAKE CHEM WITH HIM. He is extremely unclear and you won't understand what he's saying because of his accent. His tests had nothing to do with his slides or the textbook. I'm usually an A student and I failed his class and had to retake it. He is approachable but that won't help you because you wont understand him.
Horrible. Can't teach and his slides are literally useless.
Horrible. I don't even know why he has a job. Can't teach and his slides are literally useless.
He is the worst proff York could ever hire. His explanations are terrible, he always goes off topic, He tries to tell jokes but they are lame. His test are extremly hard, and he doesnt explain anything. His accent is extremly strong. He should go back to ESL and learn proper English! Hes useless as a prof. York can hire alot better proffs than him.
Useless as a prof, York can do a lot better than that!
Hes a horrible prof, who is completly useless. He cant even teach, all he does is read slides and he doesnt explain anything properly!
Amazing prof! So sweet, extremely approachable and an absolute pleasure to be in his class.
hi everyone,i am taking chem1000 in summer ,and so far mirza is good ,but i need his quizes,so please if anyone had his quizes e mail me at [email protected]
he is the best proff ever,he is sssssso sweet
Amazing and sweet prof
THIS PROF WAS VERY HELPFUL!! IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS JUST GO TO HIM AND HE TAKES THE TIME TO TEACH YOU UNTIL YOU GET IT... HIS TESTS ARE FAIR - I MEAN AFTER ALL, IT ISSS CHEMISTRY! IF YOU STUDY THE TEXTBOOK AND ITS EXAMPLES YOULL BE FINE! HIS SLIDES ARE PRETTY GOOD TOO- DURING TUTORIAL HE WILL GO THROUGH EVERY TYPE OF QUESTION STEP BY STEP- :)
I didn't find this professor helpful at all. I tried my best to listen to him and try understand what he says but his sentences don't make sense at all. His exams were not hard at all, there just wasn't enough time. If you want to do good in the class make sure you read the text book and do all the homework problems because his lectures are useless
Terrible. Difficult to understand. Disorganized. Shows up late. Unpredictable exam questions. Answers individual questions privately at the front of the class during tutorials instead of publicly for the benefit of the class. Gets off topic frequently. You'd get a better mark skipping lecture and studying straight from the textbook. Worst uni mark.
Worst teacher i've ever had, worst mark, hes totally useless, he makes mistakes in his lectures and he doens't make sense. Best advise is to study straight from the text book and practice as many questions from the text book as possible, his quizzes has random unexpecting questions and he gives very little time!
The worst.wasting of time and your money.if you et his course switcch it immediately or even drop it if theree is not an alternative section.
Wasting of your time and OSAP money.Change his class immediately if you get his course.
As stated by many, boring, confusing and unrealistic. Get out while you can get some funds back. Am certain the drop rate was greater than 30% of initial students.
By far my worst mark and I actually tried for the course. Chemistry is hard as it is, but there's something about the way he talks that makes it impossible for me to stay awake during his lecture. His tests are hard, and you have absolutely no idea what could appear on there. So my advice if you take it with him: know everything.
I've had him twice. He has put things on tests that were NOT covered in lecture. Both times I've had him people are always scrambling trying to figure out what's actually on the tests\quizs. He's also changed test material last minute. A is possible, but lots of BS to earn it. Stay away from chemistry at York period.
His voice is so gentle and its pretty hard to understand him , lectures are good to go to he explains concepts and goes over examples, his tests are hard but if you do alotta practice and apply yourself you can do fairly decent
He is responsible for the only non A course on my transcript.....it was a C.....during the summer. His tests don't make sense and I could not understand a word he said! During the year profs at York Give easier tests!
He is an excellent professor, a jewel for York. Very knowledgeable, have firm command in chemistry. Always ready to help. He spend awful lot of time beyond his office hours with students. Very approachable, soft spoken and caring prof. We need more of his kind at York.
Great prof! Easy lectures and has really funny jokes up his sleeves! Just got to read up notes outside class and read ahead before lecture. Also ask lots of questions an you should do great!
He is just a nightmare. Worst prof I have ever had in my academic career.
He is just a nightmare. Worst prof of my academic career!
He is a nightmare. Worst prof. You will not learn anything by going to his class. His Power-point lectures are full of errors. His notes are full of errors! You just have to pray, thats the only way you can get a good mark
Does not give out all his lecture slides. His powerpoint contains 200 slides, while the powerpoint given to us on the moodle is 50 slides. He leaves out a lot of information. If he went through a slide too fast and you ask him to quickly go back he will say, "Just read the textbook, you will find something similar to that slide there."
This prof is unbelievable; he is not good at all. No need to go to lectures at all. Read the slides, textbook, and do as much practices as you can. If you study hard and do everything, you should get an A/A+, and I am sure that I will.
He's a funny prof and his lectures are good for covering the basics but you've definitely got to read the textbook and make your own notes. His 1st and 2nd tests were okay, but his 3rd test had stuff that he never really taught :(
Would not recommend. If you are taking chem 1000 take it with any other prof. He is unclear, his slides online are inconsistent with the ones he has in class. You never know what is on his tests even when you ask him to clarify, he beats around the bush. Difficult tests when compared with the previous semesters.
AVOID at all cost!! The worst professor I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I could not understand a word he says and he does not help you.
Worst professor I've ever had. Would highly recommend switching into a different lecture if you have him. Tests are ridiculous and are not like what is taught in lectures or in the tutorial. He is very unclear and hard to understand and I will have to retake the course because of him.
I don't understand a word that comes out of his mouth. He wastes time and his quizzes don't fall in line with lecture. Everytime I ask a question he'll either brush it off or repeat what he just said (and not helpful what so ever) He expects way too much out of his students without helping his students. I beg you don't take any of his classes
Oh Hameed Mirza...tests are not consistent with what is taught in class. Difficulty of tests is 10 fold what is taught both in class and tutorial. If you are strong in chemistry, you might manage, but if you are not, expect to teach yourself everything and do poorly. Will now have to retake this course.
TERRIBLE prof. He can't teach for his life and his tests are very unfair. Going to lectures is useless since all he does is read off the slides, which are exactly from the book. Expect to teach yourself the whole course and unless you're a chem god, do NOTTT take his class.
The WORST, don't take his course even if it means dropping ur chem course for the semester, he talks about his life more than chemistry. ONLY & ONLY if ur a chem GOD then take his lecture, other wise u'll just give up on chemistry and question yourself why i'm attending his lecture, its better to sip coffee.
If possible, don't take this course with him. He is a very nice person but he is not a very good teacher, he is unclear and does not really answer questions directly. I had to rely solely on my textbook to pass this class, so if you are taking it with him, your textbook will be your lifesaver.
HE is very friendly and easy to talk to, really welling to help even post his office hours, but his lecture content is irrelevant to test questions. lectures are all about theory and tests are 100% problem solving..if chem is your field and you can do it on your own take it, otherwise DON'T.
really nice guy, but professionally could be questioned. I understand why people give him a bad rank. But honestly, if ur an avid self learner, and have an interest in chemistry, then youll be fine. However, if you depend on your prof to provide you with every little information, then find a different proff. First 2 tests were easy, last was hard.
Lectures are about theory but tests are all problem solving he is the worst you have to study everything on your own do not take his course
BE VERY, VERY CAUTIOUS. While nice and approachable, his tests are NOT fair, and his lectures are useless. The lecture notes he provides as print-outs are very incomplete to what he actually shows. A lot of the information he says is useless. IF YOU WANT TO DO GOOD, YOU MUST TEACH IT YOURSELF USING THE BOOK AND SOLUTIONS MANUAL. GOOD LUCK.
WORST PROFF IN YORK. HES SO BAD THAT I EVEN PUT IN THE EFFORT TO RATE HIM. AVOID AT ALL COST
Useless piece of shiiit, avoid at all cost
If you have the ability to, avoid him. He is simply an incomprehensible, rude professor who spends about half his lectures about his life experiences. His lectures are inconsistent with the slides, and his tests seem to care more about unit conversions than actual knowledge. If you do get him, be prepared to use the book as your bible. Good luck.
Just do not take any courses with him! Avoid him at all cost! He is the worst prof you could ever have! His tests are ridiculously hard and he does not even teach anything!
Jesus Christ, 90% of lessons i walked out thinking what the heck just happened? he rambles on about the concept for the whole lecture. He needs to go over the tools (formulas) we will need to use and how, when. He needs to do more EXAMPLES.
He made me regret taking chem 1000. Hopefully Pietro is better for chem 1001
Do not take his class!!!
Avoid!!! his test do not match what he says in class and are extremely long. his lectures are boring and you don't get much out of them. he rambles on about concepts that no one is understanding. not very good, but i must say he does know his stuff.
Very nice guy, but hard to understand. His lectures are very boring. Most of studying done from reading the textbook and doing past tests.
Avoid! If this course is mandatory for your select major, try avoid taking it with Hameed Mirza. Throughout his lectures, he rambles on about matters that do not pertain to the course. Not very helpful. Tests are very lengthy and ridiculously hard.
Avoid at all costs!! Compared to other chem1000 profs his tests are much longer and exponentially harder. His lectures are a complete waste of time he just rambles on and on about useless stuff. Tests and classwork have no connection. the example he does hardly suffice. Worst ever. i hated chem and now i despise it thanks to him. TERRIBLE!
an absolutely terrible professor. 3hr long lectures and you get nothing out of it all he does is mumble about theory. no application and then his tests murder you. he makes the most lame jokes ever.. waste of time and your money. unless you are desperate do not spoil your life. he makes chem worse then it already is.
Dr. Mirza was an OK lecturer. He did plenty of practice questions although i didn't find them helpful in preparing me for the test. The tests were a bit difficult, however, reading the textbook helped.
WORST prof ever!!!!!!!!!!!! STAY AWAY. has an accent doesn't really know how to answer questions. laughs at ppls answers. Tests are LETHAL, not enough time to finish a single of his tests. The average grade in my class was really poor. and the thing that's really annoying -- he laughs at his own dumbest jokes.
He is a very kind and genuine professor. Not the best teacher and going to class wasn't really necessary, he reads off his powerpoints which are all from the textbook. Study from the textbook if you want to pass and ask for help when needed. He is great at explaining concepts if you go to him during office hours, not so much during lecture.
He's not a terrible prof, but like most courses you need to work hard for it. You need the textbook and you should definitely look at pasts test for this course to get a good idea for the quizzes. Go to tutorials if you need help! He's hard to understand but just tell him to repeat or sit closer to the front. Good luck.
He was very boring during lectures, just reads off powerpoint slides. You wont miss a lot if you dont go to lecture. If you wanna do good, do your readings and practice previous tests (usually posted on Moodle by the prof himself). Practice, practice! I never really went to him for feedback so cant really say how he is.
tries to be on top of everything.
His first test was easy, but the second test and the exam was really hard. He is always there to help you.
Mirza is a prof who does not often walk around the room, thoroughly explain himself, or listenings to students questions. When I went to class and I would dare to ask him a question, it was like talking to a wall. He could not understand my questions and when he didn't he just gave me an irrelevant answer and shook it off as if he solved it. Avoid.
Thank you York for hiring a professor who did absolutely (emphasis on absolutely) nothing for us. Never answered questions directly, never had any idea what was going to be on the quiz. Avoid this professor at all costs.
The course is easy if you are good at chemistry but do not expect to learn anything from this prof. He does not talk loud or clear enough, he humiliates students because of their questions and the lectures are boring. My chemistry is very good but he simply made me get confused about some topics.
Very dry and boring teacher. The final exam is terrible. Prepare to read the textbook and answer your own questions because he will not.
Had him this summer term. By far the worst prof/teacher i've ever encountered in my life and I've seen some nonchalant teachers over my life. He simply reads off of the slides and doesn't even tell you the formulas you will be given on the tests. It's hard asking questions in his class to clarify any doubts. Be prepared to learn on your own!!!
Terrible Professor! Get out while you still Can!!
easy course. easy prof. most dislike his teaching style but material is enough to learn on your own.
Very caring. Decent lectures - you can get used to his accent quite quickly. A variety of projects/tests give a very good feel for the course. Slides are also online, and very useful, as much of the testing comes from it.
If you require information to be spoon fed to you, then you wont do well in his course. The material is very easy and most of it can be found online or in his slides.
Not a good lecturer at all. His lectures are super boring as all he does is read off the slides. There is no clarification, the broad information on the slide is all you learn. He provides practice quizzes and problems that supposedly reflect his own quiz but they do not. In reality his quizzes are much more difficult. Not a good prof at all.
Worst prof ever. Dude doesnt teach applications which is why youll fail his quizzes
Terrible lecturer. His slides are broad and do not do much to help you understand what you need to know for the course. Mirza just reads off his slides the whole time. He gives practice quizzes and practice problems in class that are 1000x easier than the quizzes. Also useless if you ask questions during his office hours.
Lectures are dry and boring. He reads off his slides and his practice problems do not prepare you for his quizzes. The fact that he makes like 10 mistakes per problem gets annoying and when you try to tell him that he made a mistake he doesn't even understand. He also makes tonnes of mistakes on his quiz questions that screws you over.
He is an excellent professor. Extremely knowledgeable. He prepare you for the professional schools. There is no match of Dr. Mirza at York. Very enthusiastic teacher. I love him. His lectures are most enjoyable. He brings examples from real life and explain them. Dr. Mirza try to go out of the way to help us. I wish we have more teachers like him.
You must learn everything on your own. You get used to his dry lectures. Quizzes though. If you are the type that likes to think about how to approach a problem first and then do it, you'll never pass. People rarely finish quizzes, most leave at least one blank page. Unless you are willing to REALLY work for your grade, run. Run far far away.
The other comments are exactly right.. he is not a very good prof. As a lecturer, he goes over unimportant concepts from the textbook instead of focusing on practice questions. And the questions that he did with the class were not similar to the tests, making them brutal! Even if you're desperate, I still wouldn't choose this prof.
He is not a good prof. For a first year course, he will give extremely hard tests and does not go over important concepts in class that will be on the test. Do not take his class. Get ready to read everyday if you are. Never taking his class ever again!
Mr Hameed Mirza is probably the worst professor in york university. Our school went on strike for 5 months, he canceled all of his in class lectures, and gave us a 5+ chapter final to fail. He taught us personally up till half that amount. Absolutely no sympathy for students. Do not take his courses if you are trying to graduate & not waste money.
I strongly advise that you do not take his class. He cancelled lectures during the strike and the exam covered material that was never taught in class. Be prepared to teach yourself, his lectures are a waste of time. He does not prepare his students well enough and his midterms are brutal. By far, the worst chem prof I've encountered at York.
An exceptional Professor. He is very knowledgeable and have background both academic and industrial. He bring examples from real life situations to make us understand complicated and difficult concepts. We must have more professors like Dr. Mirza at York.
A professor that inspired me to be in Chemistry. Exceptionally knowledgeable, explains extremely difficult concepts in such wonderful manner that even an average student can understand them. The same class my other friends attended when another prof was teaching, there were hardly enough students to take the course. His class is full of students.
A great person I m sure but not the best teacher. Quizzes contain spelling errors that are hard to understand so you'll prob gets those questions wrong.
Such a bad prof. All he did was just read out the slides with a heavy accent and expect to do practice problems in the textbook although he did not say which one should do. Not deserved to be a Prof.
Professor Mirza is so disorganized and his students suffer for it. He provides no information on the content of the midterms until the class before the midterm. He also reads off the powerpoint and does not provide new information outside of the textbook. You are better off staying home and teaching yourselves the material.
This prof takes forever to teach and does not have enough time to finish teaching content for the test. But he expects us to go home and teach ourselves the content that he didnt have time to teach and heavily test us on it. He provides important slides on his master copt but not our copy of the slides and students have to beg him to provide slides
Very disorganized, and states irrelevant material during lectures that does not apply to the slides. This leads to the class being behind, which in turn forces the students to teach themselves as testable material is NOT taught in class because there is "not enough time". Does not TEACH the material, rather the prof just states irrelevant facts.
Don't hesitate, choose his course, u will not regret that. He is so kind, everyone enjoys his lectures.
U will love this professor, he is so kind and patient. Hope u can enjoy his course.
This course is the worst I've ever taken. The lectures are horrible, he just reads the slides in the most unclear way possible. The midterms are hard and you cannot prepare for them. Don't be surprised to see questions you've never heard of before. The grading system is terrible (60% for 2 quizzes (2 out of 3) and 40% for exam)
What a lovely professor, he helps me to find my interest in chemistry!!!
Just be ready to get the tests out of the sample questions or even the practice questions he will provide.
Professor does a poor job explaining the material. Takes many pauses and says "um" every other sentence. He does not go over many application problems which is somewhat ok because most of the questions were conceptual ones on the tests. However, few people scored highly on those application problems that appeared on his tests. Please self-study.
You cannot hear anything that he says in class. He seems to run into a technical difficulty once every week where can can't get his slides onto the projector. I literally survived the course by forming a study group and learning from youtube videos that I found and the ones my study group found. There are almost no example practice questions.
