Did well in class except on term assignment. From what I understand he has a reputation as a hard marker. be warned.
Average instructor, make sure you agree with his political ideas though (free thought what?). Mine were different than his, and I disagreed with his political hero and got a lower mark on my term paper.
Lectures were great, tests not based on anything learned in class. I highly suggest a different professor for this class. Welch is awsome.
i've never fallen asleep in class....till NOW, and not just once, like every week
A really good instructor, very clear and interesting lectures. Funny, and fair if you do the work.
Very good instructor, knows the material well in the courses he teaches, and uses time very well.
Not that great, not the worst either. Lectures are definetly boring..but if you dont understand something he will clarify it up for you. assignments arn't that bad, marks hard though
WARNING: hard marker, boring, likes the soound of his own voice.
Hamish is a very tough marker. But with that said I can honestly say that his higher expectations made me a better student.
Great teacher, and teaches his classes in a clear and precise manner.
A great guy! His class is very fair, work har good gredes vs. the opposite. I like him. I wonder if he ever thought of opera, his voice sure to could fit on a stage. Overall a great, and good guy! Very clear!
Encouraging professor - U will work extremely hard in his class though. Course load is quite overloaded for a F/T student. Take his courses if your P/T only. Not one to stray off topic unless you talk outside the classroom environment. One of the better profs for polisci
I found his lectures very informative and interesting. He is very knowledgeable, helpful, quick response to emails. There is quite a bit of assigned reading, but it is a nice addition to lecture material if you just skim it. Hard marker on papers. Great prof if you are interested in the material.
Marks a little hard, guys a joke though, needs a life really bad.
MArks hard, and is boring. Tries to swear in the class and looks like a fool.
This guy needs to realize that POSC 110 is not a Master's class. He needs to understand that not all of his students are brillant when it comes to POSC. Horrible lectures, tests and assignments are quite diffcult, to much reading assigned, especailly when he doesn't go over it in class.BOOOOOOOO!!
Comes from back East... Possibly the toughest marker in ALL BC - teaches like your a PHd student
Brilliant instructor. Knows the material inside-out, and is well known in the POSC community. Of course he's a tough marker, ITS UNIVERSITY YOU FREAKING BABIES!!!!!!!!!!
Awsome Prof. He really knows what he is talking about, very helpful out side of class if you need him too. Yah he can be a hard marker but that is part of being in school!
He is so hard! Had him for posc 110, that was hard, you should see this class!
Great professor. Fair marker -- he's not trying to trick you. He wants you to do well and gives you all the information you need to do so. Lectures and class was always interesting! Would definetly take another class with him!
Knows what he is talkng about. You have to work hard to get good grades put it is totally possible. Tests were directly from class lectures, you just have to take good notes (which means paying attention)
I did not learn anything from his class, and I was interested in poli sci. Very intelligent, excellent speaker, loves what he does. Fairly difficult marker for a first year course.
Hamish is a very engaging instructor. He is brilliant and I would love to take another class with him if time allows. He is extremely helpful if you ask.
Very clear of expectations, helpful, respectful. I was frustrated when our final essay due date was extended by 2 weeks to those who decided not to hand it in on time, while everyone else in the class was left in the dark on the subject. Also frustrated that many of the final exam questions were based on current events rather than assigned readings
Nice man! Do the work and you will do fine. He was a great student so he will not appreciate any slacking! Show an interest in Political Science and you will enjoy the class! Gino does not lie!
He is a great teacher, very passionate about his subject. He makes classes interesting and relevant to nowadays. I would highly recommend classes with him. He seems like an OK marker, the test was easy and the essays moderate.
He is probably one of the best profs at UCFV. Very clear. Very helpful.
If you want to learn, Hamish is your man. He is well organized, intelligent and relevant. He knows the material that is covered in the class well. He tries to make students feel comfortable with the material, his teaching style, and work that he provides. I have now had him for 3 classes and he is the best Prof I have had.
He's a really interesting guy and he's obviously very enthusiastic about his subject field. His exams are taken largely from the text, especially the coursepack, but if you develop a basic understanding of the theories, it'll be easy enough to guess your way through. I've really enjoyed his class and will take more with him.

Excellent Prof! Very knowledgeable and organized, really gets into his lectures! He's approachable if you have questions, but definitely expects a lot. Really tough term paper and a political journal, but if you show up to class and do the readings, you'll be fine. Great guy, I'll definitely take more of his classes. I like his teaching style. :)
His lectures are quite tedious, and he makes a lot of weird voices while trying to be humorous. Some of his exam questions are irrelevant and strange. He marks assignments somewhat arbitrarily. Overall, not the worst instructor, but hardly the best either.
He randomly yells during his 3-hour lectures, which at least helps to wake you up. He's an okay teacher, but very tough with marking. I usually get A's on my essay and he gave me a C on my best work. Most of his expectations align with a 200 or 300 level class instead of the 100 level it's supposed to be.
I found this class very straight forward and easy. Telford is a good professor, he won't blow your mind but he is very good. His tests are some of the easiest I have done to date, although it helps to have prior knowledge of Canadian politics. He is a very hard essay marker I received 77 percent or a B+, I am usually about 85 percent
Hamish has to be one of the worst profs I've ever had. He does not engage the class at all, he doesn't put notes up for you to copy. His standards for the assignments are too high for a 100 level course, and his lectures are just him telling stories about what he likes in politics. I don't recomend hamish at all.
it's pretty boring. not engaging at all. nice guy, but probably the most boring class I've taken.
He's a nice guy, and tries to be funny during class. He seemed very approachable, but he marks quite hard. Ultimately, his expectation are far above a 100 level course. I am a consistant A+ essay writer and I got a C on my essay. I was interested in POSC before taking this course, now I know I'll never take one again. He's a boring prof.
Hamish is a great Prof. He's really knowledgeable and easy to approach with questions. He doesn't really use notes, so you really need to show up to class to take note of what he says. Tests are all multiple choice and pretty easy if you go to class. The course can be a bit dull, but he's a nice guy and tries to make it interesting and engaging.
Hamish is a good instructor but he is demanding on his essays. Lots of reading from text and handouts. Lots of class discussion.
Very good prof but hard marker when it comes to essays. Also be prepared to read a lot throughout the course. He requires you to read the text, newspaper articles and other handouts which tend to add up over time. Overall though made the class fun but marked too hard but exams were all MC so it balanced out.
Expected Canadian politics to be a bore, but his lecture style is very interesting. He just casually talks about the news, incorporating content from the course, which was helpful for papers and tests! Also, I don't find him too tough, I think he is a fair grader. Overall, cool guy!
Hamish is very knowledgeable. His lectures are interesting and he is incredibly helpful. His exams are quite easy and he is not a difficult grader. I would highly recommend him!
The hardest 100 level class I've ever taken. 50% of your grade comes from 10 reflections you write on newspaper articles throughout the semester, for which he gives little to no feedback. No powerpoints, the entire class is a huge group discussion which you are then tested on, along with the textbook. Read it and know current events for exams.
While Pr Telford is approachable, personable, and obviously knowledgeable, his bias comes through quite clearly in his grading. If you disagree with something he supports, that WILL be reflected in his marking. Participate, be interested, but do not be afraid to challenge a grade he gave you.
Dr. Telford is super knowledgeable + a nice guy. First half of class is discussion on current political events, second half is lecture, goes fast so you miss points. Exams aren't too difficult. 40 MC. Read the text once + study lectures, should be an easy A. 50% of grade is 10, 500-600 word reflections - not difficult, just tedious.
Hamish was a great prof. He has students read the newspaper then have discussions in class regarding current events which keeps the class interesting. There is 2 assignments (easy), and 2 tests
Hamish is a good guy, his lectures are dry but he does what he can with it. The critical reflections are 50% of your grade and easy to get a 7/10 even if you dont try. However the two tests (no final) were extremely hard, hand consisted of questions that had no relevance to the class. I probably wouldnt take him again based on that fact.
Hamish is very good! Even though I found it to be a bit dry at times.
Very passionate about politics and take up the whole 3 hours talking about it. Overall was easy, just make sure your work checked over before handing it in. Tests are based out of the textbook, and some questions on current ministers.
I find it boring and very hard. He made us read 3219 pages, then write 5-6 pages of paper after that.
Hamish is the best prof I've had at UFV. I took this class simply because it was the only class that fit with my schedule; I expected it to be dry and repetitive. I was very wrong, I found myself looking forward to every class! His lectures are fun if you come prepared and participate. He is very knowledgable and I found his marking to be fair.
Hamish is very passionate about politics and it's at his lead that the class becomes interesting. I am not someone who knew a lot about politics before joining this class but found myself very absorbed in every lecture. Study for tests and make a real effort on the book report, and he will reward your studying with fair grades.
I was expecting Canadian politics to be a real bore but Hamish is really an amazing lecturer whose passion about the subject only stirred my interest in the topics. Definitely recommend!
I thought this class would be boring but Hamish is actually quite funny! He made the less exciting stuff fun to learn and I very much enjoyed his class. Only 2 assignments throughout the semester and 2 tests. So you better do good on them because that's all you get.
Hamish is a nice prof who is very passionate about politics. He makes the lectures interesting and engages with students. He also talks about current politics rather than just old political news which is refreshing. Hamish is very kind and lenient.
Hamish's professional and expert lectures have inspired me to make poli sci my second major. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly, but to get an A, especially in upper level courses, you have to put in the reading, thinking, and writing. This was the first time he taught a BC politics class and it was amazing - especially liked the seminar class.
Hamish is a really good prof. His lectures are long and can be boring, he understands that most students are there because its a program requirement. For his condensed course, there was only 3 graded assignments, 2 exams (30% each) 1 paper (40%) so you better do well. He is very lenient, and approachable and tries to make it the best experience.
Made a boring topic more relatable and interesting. His class was very thought to provoke and has made me more aware of politics. and. it's importance.
Hamish is a great prof! Makes a pretty boring subject matter (how Canadian politics works) very engaging. He's not what I would call an easy grader, but is very consistent and fair. Would take his class again for sure.
As an introductory class, Post 110 was difficult. There are 10 short papers 500-600 words each based on news paper articles. That's a total of 5000-6000 written words for an introductory class. He takes attendance. There are two tests, which you must read the textbook for if you wish to do tell. Your grade is 50% reflections, 40% tests and 10% par.
Was great to take this course during Fed. Election as tons of current events to relate text content to. Needing a subscription to a paper seems silly and the journals must teach him something new to receive anything above 90%+. Tests are all MC and super easy IMO if you show up and pay attention. Average first year course besides tough marking
Took another politics class before this one and hated it. But I enjoyed this class very much!! He does a great job making it interesting, made me enjoy politics. I'd recommend cutting out articles and reading chapters ahead as I found it hard to keep up with reading news later in the semester when you have a ton of other things to do.
Hamish is friendly, respectable, and an expert. His textbook is well organized, engaging, and makes information accessible. To do well you must put in effort in reading, thinking, and writing. Read the textbook and newspaper and participate in class discussion. He gives little feedback on assignments but marks fairly. I recommend Hamish's class!
Hamish's class is easy to pass and to do well in. He's a fairly easy marker and tests are multiple choice. Downside is that his lectures can be really boring and long. He does one big assignment and it requires you to read the newspaper regularly all semester. Tip: Don't subscribe to a paper $$$! Free newspapers in SUB building and library!
Best professor at ufv
Really passionate guy, so lectures were very interesting for me. His homework load is insane. You have to subscribe to Globe and Mail and do ten papers based on 10 articles. SO MUCH WORK. His tests were also very difficult, I did well but the class mean was like 62%. He's a super great guy, but HUGE workload.
For a 100 level course, this was a hard class. He expects you to buy his textbook AND subscribe to a newspaper. Your grade is based on 10 papers on news articles and 2 tests. Tests are all mc but not easy questions. He says himself his averages are low & get lower on the second half every year. His lectures are painfully boring. Get ready to read.
if this class is mandatory for you like it was for me, by any chance do not take this class with Hamish, Each lecture is extremely boring, wasting more than half the classes going on about newspaper articles which you have to pay out of your own pocket biweekly for, second makes the multiple choice test is stupid he doesn't cover any of the material
Hamish is clearly very passionate about politics but if you know the basics of politics, this course is pretty dry material. You spend half the class each day going over current events that you've found in the newspaper which can get boring but the second half of the class is better because the lecture actually starts. He takes attendance for marks
Despite being a tough grader, a heavy lecturer, and the fact that you will read your eyes out, Hamish is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is humourous, engaging, makes content interesting, knowledgeable, and if you soak in his lectures, you will do well on the papers. Hamish urges students to examine key issues, questions, and connections.
Loved the class, just put in a bit of work and youll be fine. Overall an easy grader too
I had Hamish online and he was great, lots of breakout groups but it was great because u make friends, and he doesnt pressure you to participate but encourages you at your own pace. He has a great attitude towards politics and towards his students. He replies to emails fairly quick, and I overall enjoyed his class and wish I could take it again!!
Very knowledgeable in his field, the class itself is a group conversational class and conversation about the current news. You write a bunch of mini papers, it is not extremely hard, but make sure you do a lot of expanding of your own opinion on how it can apply to real life and how the world is currently functioning while connecting to the text
Hamish was a good professor. I hate politics, but he made it bearable. There are a ton of mini papers he gets the students to do, but they're doable as long as you avoid procrastinating and set aside time for each one. Be sure to participate in class discussions!
He gives little to no feedback on the analysis. The mandatory zoom calls are also a waste of time because he doesn't talk about anything that is on the tests.
He is an amazing prof! I would definitely take him again. He is a hard marker on the analysis papers and the assignment outline is a bit vague. But overall he cares a lot about his students and is a very passionate and knowledgeable.
the condensed course I took with Hamish only consisted of two exams: a midterm and a final exam. No written assignments.
The condense course consisted of two exams. They are extremely easy as long as you read the lecture slides and most of the questions are basic common sense.
Hamish is an amazing prof! He is so kind to his students, and kept 3 hour online lectures entertaining. He knows his subject thoroughly and you can see his passion for teaching. I recommend him to anyone! His tests are long, but if you participate in class you will do more than ok!
Hamish is by far one of the nicest professors I have met. He is extremely knowledgeable about politics and is deeply invested in the wellbeing of his students. The class consists of 8 written papers (500-600 words) about political issues, and 2 quizzes. He is a great guy, and made the course very enjoyable. You can't go wrong taking his course.
As a criminology student, I was dreading this class as I knew very little about Canadian Politics going in. By the end of the term I found myself sad it was coming to an end. I have a new found respect for politics & Telford made this a very interesting & fun online class. Youll do well as long as you read the text & go to class!
Telford's class was not hard but it was boring, but he does his best. Textbook was needed, grades were based on 8 reflections, a midterm and a final- exams were all MC. Not good class, but not bad, very neutral, but for sure not a 3 hr class, could be done in an hour each week.
The class was not that hard however, he spent too much time doing wasteful group discussions. He did not go over his lectures at all and did not state what was going to be on the exams it was basically a guessing game. His class homework was not hard however, the exams were difficult because he did not state what would be on them.
Hamish is an amazing prof, I was nervous when I first started the class since the course was for credit. But we were marked off of 8 article reviews, midterm and the final exam which are based on his PowerPoints and the textbook. I learned a lot from this class and enjoyed it/ did really well. He's also helpful on our weekly class zooms.
Amazing prof! If you put the work in and stay on top of your work, it will pay off. Hamish is very knowledgable and passionate about politics, which is what made this course a great experience. There were no surprises with exams or assignments. His textbook was a great read! Hamish is very intelligent and it was a pleasure being in his class.
You can tell Hamish is very passionate about politics. He is very intelligent and professional. The class was quite easy, bring articles to class, get his textbook & make sure to participate cause he will keep track of who's participating for marks!
8 reflections on current even news articles, 4 due in middle of semester, 4 due at end, 500 words each reflection. Hamish is super funny, and really knows how to make his 3 hour lectures engaging and fun. 1-3 group discussions with peers per lecture. MC midterm and final; if you read the textbook (which is well written by him) the class is easy!
his class was easy but he's a tough grader. you need to read in order to answer his assignments. there is a lot of readings some of them are so dry. overall, he's average for me.
Took the condensed summer course. Hamish is an understanding prof, and will get back to you soon. 6 reflections about 600 words due each week. Reading the textbook is important! Not clear on the reflections and what he expects and his feedback was copy and paste every time. However exams weren't too bad if you do your work.
At the start no one had their camera on because it wasn't necessary. He then said next class that a "student" had emailed him to say that they were dropping the class due to no one having their camera on. You have to buy his textbook and read it to do well. Sucks that he is the only one who teaches the course. Tough grader on the news article's
Hamish's class was not bad at all. He is very helpful if you email him for help and he is nice. The class consists of 8 short papers and 2 tests. The short papers are pretty easy and due 4 at a time. Tests are powerpoint and textbook based. If your review those you will be fine. I would recommend his class.
Hamish is a great professor. If you study lecture slides and attend class, you will be set for the exams. He is very caring; he wants to create an environment where students can share their opinions/ask questions without judgment. He has been one of my favourite professors so far, and I had zero interest in politics before taking his class.
I took a posc 100 class to LEARN about posc, but it kind of feels like hamish expects us to already know and understand posc in order to reflect on current articles, i wish he was more clear on his grading criteria or more lenient with his marking. his lectures are a lot of discussion between peers but its hard when you dont know much.
class consisted of 8 papers, midterm, exam, and BUNCH of discussions. Be ready to read the news every single day, his textbook, AND watch the lecture videos
Hamish is very knowledgeable but in his lectures, he tends to ramble so it's easy to lose track. There were 8 essays, 4 due at a time and he didn't provide feedback on why I got graded the way I did. He only accepts news articles from certain sites for the essays and class discussion, which meant having to fork out money I didn't for a subscription
Hamish has been a wonderful professor in every class I have taken wth him. He is very knowledgable on politics, and has a ton of first hand experience in the field. I would highly recommend him for anyone going into politics or with an interest in poly sci in general. Course was well done, but heads up on long papers. 20 pg min for term paper.
Honestly was a waste to attend his lectures, he posts the PowerPoints with audio and then requires you to listen to them and then come to class for another 3 hours! Should have made attendance mandatory because half the students were asleep or leaving in the middle bc his lectures are so long. Doesn't give much feedback on assignments either.
Hamish was a great professor. As someone who is not a fan of politics, he made the class super interesting, bringing current political events into discussion. The mid-term and final are both online. Overall Hamish's class was enjoyable, and he is super knowledgable.
If you take the time to read the news, textbook, and engage in in-class discussions you will do well in this course. Hamish is one of my favourite profs at UFV. He is knowledgable and I thought this course was structured in a very logical way that also leaves room for discussion on current events!
Hamish is a wonderful poli sci prof. He is so knowledgeable and makes his class a welcoming and engaging space for discussion. this is my favorite class this semester by far. The textbook is really easy to understand and the assignments are easy if you engage with current news and class material. HIGHLY recommend Hamish for this course
He is very knowledgeable and really good at teaching. His class is a flipped classroom model so you are expected to do the readings before class. He will only let you look at news articles from the globe and mail (use a pay wall bypass). If you don't want to participate just take 110 in the summer as it is asynchronous. Overall though very good.
Amazing class and professor. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone. He teaches the class in a very engaging way with various group discussions on the readings and current events. He is very knowledgable and gives great feedback. As long as you participate, do the readings and watch his short lectures, you're almost guaranteed an A.
Dr. Telford is a very friendly, caring and attentive professor! His courses often tackle difficult material and require a substantial amount of reading, but he is always available to provide support and is very knowledgeable on the material. The feedback he provides is very useful, and he is open to meeting with you to provide further assistance.
Overall hes a good prof. for the reflections he assigns he marks them very easily on us and everyone in our class did pretty good. he doesn't give notes you just have to read articles every week and get ready to participate with your table group. you have to read textbook chapter every week. but yeah discussion heavy class just have to talk to othe
Hamish is a great prof, and his lectures are entertaining and humourous. He keeps class interesting and isn't too hard of a marker. But he assigns a MASSIVE amount of reading. Not all of it is mandatory to get a good grade, but you do have to at skim it to understand what to write. Very nice guy and his classes are fun and well paced. Engaging.
Had 5 papers, all out of 8 points, and worth 40% of your overall grade. And a final, worth 60%. Lectures were boring, had to listen to all slides - but were understandable, so you have to give him some credit. Very nice and understanding through mail. The textbook was just walls of text (even if it was made simpler, and needed for the papers).
We had 4 assignments worth 48% altogether (12% each) and One Final exam worth 52% all multiple choice questions (104 questions). The biweekly assignments were tough. No clear criteria on what exactly he wants. Tough grader on that. Final exam was tough as well, long exam with lots of questions. You have to get his textbook in order to pass.
Great prof overall. 4 relatively easy assignments worth 48% of grade total. He marked these pretty tough and specifically told me he very rarely gives out grades >90% so be aware of that. Final worth 52% of grade which I'm not a huge fan of, but it was all multiple choice and fairly easy so not too bad (brought my grade up even). Would take again.
Professor Telford's POS110 class is engaging but challenging. The assignments and exams are tough, requiring in-depth understanding of the material. However, staying on top of the readings and actively participating makes the course manageable. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep.
He doesn't seem to see beyond the now.
Hamish is a great person. His exams are straightforward and some of the questions in the first exam is from whatever he talks about in class. I enjoyed his class, and gained a lot of knowledge about Canadian politics.
everything was tough
awful experience !
You can just tell he is passionate and cares. What he teaches in the class is with a purpose and he does not make it hard for us to learn and understand Political Science. He is trying to give us the tools/knowledge to understand the daily politics that surrounds us and the importance of voting to sustain a democracy.
