Took Islamic History with him in F'07. the class was ok, another professor was supposed to teach it and he (bawardi) ended up doing it at the last minute, so he wasn't as prepared as he could've been, although its not really his fault for that. good teacher, easy to talk to, and very fair when discussing controversial topics in history/politics. :)
This professor doesn't follow the syllabus at all!! He is not easy at all, and tries to complicate things as much as he can. Since the whole class was basically doing bad, toward the end he tried issuing "easy points" out. Have to say, that was pretty nice.
Doesn't stick to the syallabus b/c he makes it easier! Insanely nice if you talk to him, VERY flexible (but attendance is mandatory). Class consisted of multiple choice quizzes (not hard if you study, plus ex. credit)and a couple of summaries. He let us vote for a research paper instead of a final; he's pretty laid back. Gives points for disc. EASY
Really nice guy. He gets carried away with lectures sometimes, but he knows his stuff. The work is fairly easy. If you have questions, make sure and ask him.
he stands and just babbles his notes, or reads from the book if he hasnt bothered to make his own notes. his quizzes are confusing, and if u complain about them, he makes sure to tell u that its UR fault for not studying good enough, not his fault for making a confusing test. he hates when someone speaks up in class, especially if ur female. AVOID!
Terrible.. he get's offended by anything u do, even if u breathe. He reads from is notebook and confuses the hell out of his students.Avoid!
Anyone who is enlisted to have Bawardi as a Professor, should drop immediately. For a 100 level class, he makes it EXTREMELY difficult, makes the tests very confusing and tricky, and can be very rude and doesn't care about the students at all...if you have a question about your grade he will blame YOU for not doing your job of studying...
He shouldn't be teaching. I would not recommend him to anyone who wants to learn. He doesn't know how to teach and is tricky!
i actually liked him, he was annoying at first, and i thought i would do horrible. i started reading the book on my own and taught myself and i got an A in the class. if i depended on HIM, i woulda got a B or C, like almost everyone else. He'd always say his opinion on things, not the FACTS. nice atmosphere, gave extra credit, 1 page paper only....
Run from this guy as fast as you can! Hates America and will tell you everything that's wrong with the world is America's fault. Teaches American History from his perspective as a foreigner, not based on historical facts. This guy is a left wing looney!
professor bawardi is a good insitful teacher. yes he is from the middle east, but bawardi speaks with clarity and is easy to understand. as far as him being baised against america is rediculous. i found being tought an american history class from someone without bais. Bawardi does open your eyes to american history. all in all its a good class.
Go to class, he gives attendance points. Also gives participation points, so try and speak up.. even though he shoots people down sometimes when they do speak up. Also, his final and midterm were like 12-15 questions out of 3-6 chapters.. which is a bit broad. This is not a blow off class.
for a lower level class, Bawardi makes the class 10 TIMES more difficult than it should be. Tests are multiple choice HOWEVER the answers can be more than option. Extremely tricky and he says its your fault if you do bad (even when you read the WHOLE Book!!) AVOID HIM!
Why go to class and be bored out of your mind? This Prof's lectures were exactly what was in the text, just with a million off-topic tangents and unecessary links to his preferred field of Arab-American studies. He was an unclear everything as you can possibly be, but when all was said and done he wasn't a bad guy, and he was a fair grader.
He is the worst history professor at the university. His True or False tests were next to impossible. "Pick the most true" oh wait... both choices have something false in them! He would make up information that could not be verified anywhere but his notes. Everything in his Hist.112 class was related to the middle east in some way.
this prof. is the worst ive had, does not know how to teach, not objective, and does not want any opinoin but is own to prevail... needs to be learning not teaching
I did not truly appreciate how much I loved this class until I walked out of It for the last time. Very good teacher, unbiased and open to all students as long as you make an effort so will he. The class is not too easy but he gives away free points to those who need it. I would definitely take again. Ameen Rihani look him up, & appreciate this man
he teachers history= documented facts, he does not talk about the middle east unless it is related to the topic. however, his multiple choice are tricky and unclear..he does gives extra credit if you show interest.. a hard class for intro to American History..
stickler on writing assignments and discussions. UM-Dearborn students are not used to this approach. loves his job and works hard and has a broad knowledge of many topics and loves to give you the big picture
I don't get the bad reviws!! he is very enthusuistic and dedicated. we need more like him! more of his students should speak up. lectures are fun and very informative.
we need more like him in Dearborn. He is nice but that's abused by some students. His teaching style is very interesting because he makes you think. If you don't study and discuss you'll have a poor grade. I don't understand the negative reviews here!!
very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. always available and approachable. students are rough on him because he comes across too nice. very serious about his work and tries to make you work hard without being a pain
I am taking his Arab American History class, and this is a phenomenal class. Any bad reviews are clearly from students that don't like to do their work. You know who you are; if you are looking for a blow off class where you don't need to learn or do anything, don't take his class. For those of us that are in school TO LEARN, this class is great!
A great person. He love his job and what he teaches. I hope the school would pic more people like him. He appreciate everything the student do. very helpfull and understanding.
Great person. Very informative, helpful and clear about what he teaches. It is obvouis that he loves his job and what he teaches. the students need to understand that school is for those who wants to learn not to play. whoever say anything bad about that man is a loser.
Worst ever. You learn nothing all he wants is for you to talk. Waste of money and time.
terrific prof.! either you love him or you have issues. he doesn't give you a reason not to like him. Clear lectures. i like it when he goes off on a tangent, but that gets things rolling. we need more like him.
Best Professor ever! Nice, clear and sticks to the syllabus. He makes the class interesting and some people get lost. but he gives a chance for discussions like no one else I know, and likes it when the class is responsive. Not easy but gives tons of extra credit
Great professor. He is thoughtful and inspires thinking. Not very easy, but gives extra credit.
Well liked by serious students. We need more like him. I think he likes his job and makes you like history.
This professor wants everyone to learn about history in a modern sense and he does it real well. He is really nice and is flexible. I would definately recommend him to others :)
The professor is extremely difficult; you basically get 2% deducted off your FINAL grade for any quiz question, midterm, report (2), and final. That means 6 wrong throughout the semester and you get an 88 in the class. He gave a study guide and then didn't gave us questions that weren't on it. I'm now no longer a 4.0 student, thanks professor.
Take this prof. you'll be glad you did. I took him for two courses and he gave 10 points for extra credit. he gives essays optional but each question is 1 point. very responsive! very nice but tough if you cut classes or don't participate.
Good prof. got to be in class. gives extra credit. easy going if you show interest. really interesting lectures and knows his stuff.
He's not real easy to all students because they expect classes to be easy. takes attendance, but likes discussions if the students participate, but they don't. give tons of extra credit. I will take him again in a heart beat.
worst professor. tests you on 4 chapters and only gives you ten questions. you miss two and your grade is a 80%
Gives extra credit like 20 percent of quizzes actually. So u can improve grade! Got to admit, he challenges students with papers and that's not popular, but necessary.
This was my best experience in history classes ever!! The professor was great and I learned more than the text says. Great professor! He tries too hard with some students who don't care.
i like him. he knows his stuff and talks about real life. likes citations and make you write a good paper.
I did not like him at all!!! All he wanted to discuss was Arabic people. It was a Michigan History class! Quizzes and tests are difficult and I studied the book and notes! I should have dropped the class. HORRIBLE!!
really good frof!! he takes students seriously and gives you tons of notes. very interesting man.
Good guy, sometimes makes mistakes; but will change your grade accordingly. If you read the text the class is easy. Yes he does try and focus on arab relations, which is really pointless in a michigan history course, but he doesn't ram it down your throat. focuses a lot on race, can get a little annoying; but over all good teacher.
Bawardi is a great professor. He did talk a lot about Arabic population, but we do go to school in Dearborn, and we do have the highest population of Arabics in the U.S, it is relatable to Michigan. Exams are so easy, gives 25 questions and only 20 count. Explains what he wants you to know, will fix mistakes on grading. Easy grader.
we need people like him in every department!! very smart and nice. i learned about sop much from this guy
knowledgable. helpful. easy going, but comes across too nice at first. misunderstood for easy credit. you'll be glad u took this guy!!!
Prof. made mich. history actually interesting. Graded generously and exams are super easy: 25 Qs mostly t/f and multiple choice, always 1-2 extra credit. Midterm has two essay Qs. One research paper 3-5 pages. Attend class and put in some effort and you should get an A no problem.
not so easy this guy!! Really tough on sources and citations. but i like him for many reasons. too nice for some people at times.
Professor Bawardi is extremely passionate about Arab History. He breaks down the course for everyone (especially for those that are not of Arabic descent, like me). Always available for help if needed. Attendance is mandatory! Grade made up of essays.
Highly recommended. Very passionate about what he does. He is very nice and will always help you if you needed. He makes his expectations clear and gives extra credits every now and then. No reason not to take him. The only thing is he requires attendance but i enjoyed his class so it wasn't a problem for me.
He is the best. Couldn't complain. Explains things thoroughly and details issues to their origins that non-Arabs may find confusing. Learned a lot about Arabs and the Arabic culture from him. I feel I understand the community around me even better.
Hani is great! I loved the class especially since I was just coming in as a Freshman, and I made some great friends. He was really flexible about everything, and was not as mean as he could have been about people turning things in late. Maybe it was because we were freshman, or it's just a chill class where he could talk to us.
expert and professional. no one else could teach the stuff like he did. great prof!
Very nice prof. Tests are multiple choice, will change deadlines if needed. Very smart and really knows his stuff. Attendance is mandatory! Easy grader. NEED the book for the tests. If you do the reading, get an easy A on exams.
One of the best professors! Extremely helpful, smart, and kind. I learned a lot from his class. Hani is the man :)
Absolutely horrible. Took an american history class, all the man talked about was arab american history. Tests were multiple choice but extremely difficult. During lectures, he would just read from his notes which made for a, extremely boring three hour lecture. AVOID.
very knowledgable and responsive and very enthusiastic. i learned a lot!!
I actually think this is one of the most objective professors I have even taken. He is very knowledgable, and his exams are either essay or multiple choice. he is NOT easy but if you miss class, you'll be lost. Take notes and you'll be fine.
Horrible
Wonderful class! Dr. Bawardi is very helpful, interesting, and engaging. He teaches beyond the text and will make an effort to focus on students' particular areas of interest if he is aware of them. Encourages input and discussion. Was my absolute favorite class this semester.
This guy is a horrible teacher. His lectures go way off topic and do nothing to teach you about what happened. The 3 hour class is spent BSing about the middle east . The tests are unblievably hard for no study guide. Don't take this class!!
He is very knowledgable. He goes off talking about random things. He really likes the Arab American topic. He says the power points are the study guide but they are very long and kind of broad. Plus the exams are short for the amount of chapters and material we are suppose to go over. Would not recommend.
Professor Bawardi was an excellent teacher! Yes, he may speak softly and go off on tangents but that's what makes the class unique. He is very knowledgeable in U.S. and Arab-American History. I would highly recommend him as an instructor!
It was a course on US history and I learned more about the mid east. DO NOT take him. I never missed a single lecture + read the chapters and still found his exams to be difficult. He said focus on the big picture yet exam day there was questions asking what acronyms stood for. Also a 95 and up is an A. 94-90 is an A- seriously take someone else.
If you can, avoid taking him as a professor. If there's no way around it, there are some things you need to keep in mind. There aren't many assignments, so make sure you do well on them and ask help if you need it. Tests are ridiculous. You need to read the textbook, but even then--his test questions are so random and don't check for learning.
A very nice guy. Also very knowledgeable. However, his lectures were quite boring. His essays are only about 10-20 points each, and his exams 35 pts each (a midterm and final), so it's very easy for your grade to drop. He offers a lot of extra credit, but said he would be discontinuing doing so.
Professor Bawardi is a nice guy, however he is a pretty hard grader. His tests are nearly impossible- ridiculous multiple choice questions. He doesn't have very clear expectations. But, he does give a ton of extra credit. Our class could get 13% added on to our grade if we did all of the extra credit. It'll be tough, but you can get a good grade.
Super difficult for a hundred level class. The midterm covers about 8 chapters and so does the final. It is A LOT to memorize. If you're really good at history then it's probably easy, but if history is not your thing, take it with someone else. Also, attendance counts.
He's not very clear with directions and changed due dates quite often. Not the most organized but he knows his stuff. One big research paper, a few short papers, a short midterm and not-so-big final.
He teaches a Michigan history class. during the three hour class he talks about irrelevant topics which most likely will not be on the exam. Strong bias to talking about middle eastern culture which really takes away from learning about all of the history of Michigan. Be ready to read his book since that is the only way to learn what is on his test
really cool and smart. take him but he is on prof. leave this year i think.
In Michigan History, one big paper, a mid term, a final, and attendance. Show up for the class and you should get a B at least. He knows what he's talking about just from looking at a topic on the slide. Book is basically mandatory since it's on the tests. Test can be hard bc he doesn't specify exactly what is on it.
Hani Bawardi is one of the best professors the University has, honestly. I know a lot of people come here to complain that his lectures spend a considerable amount of time on the Middle East- News flash, immigration/Arab history IS American History. He is a brave, strong-willed person, educator and ally. I feel fortunate to know him.
Very smart man. If you don't like sitting in a room for an hour or two listening to a man talk about what he knows than this isn't the teacher for you. But he knows so much about history and is very straight forward with his assignments. Go to class, learn, getting an A is very doable.
Hani's classes require reading and you must show up, that being said, he is a human being who recognizes we are all human beings and when life got in the way for me, he was lenient with the expectation that I would still do the work. Go to his office hours. He will break things down and work through it; he is very accommodating and very very kind.
Not easy but the kind of class that makes you remember the prof and the stuff. I mean this is one of the most interesting classes I ever had AND ITS HISTORY!! I will remember this prof for a long long time. Yes, as they said he knows a lot.
Frequently spends over 1/2 the lecture on unrelated topics - asked "what do you guys think about gun control?" in a Michigan history class & spent an hour and a half talking about this. Often wrong his own due dates and generally unprepared. Graded only on tests and papers - which he doesn't explain well. Also very soft spoken & difficult to hear
He know's his history but easily strays off topic. Not all Michigan history is Arab history. I understand his view but this isn't the class for all the side conversations. Doesn't remind you of any due dates so make sure you check the syllabus frequently. If you get a study guide, don't use it. It's more of a distraction than an aid.
Prof. Bawardi is knowledgeable. He goes on long tangents about issues that are irrelevant and controversial. He is an easy grader and passionate ... almost too passionate. He is argumentative and opinionated, and it shows.
Tangents? I learned more in this class than I did in all my previous classes, man! One class kind of teaches you about three different disciplines and classes, like minorities, race immigration history sociology arts literature. Call me old school but that's what collage should be like.
Hani Bawardi is a very passionate guy and you can tell he cares about what he teaches. The only complaint i could nit-pick is that the assignments have little explanations or criteria, but that is overshadowed by the fact that all you have to do is send an email and he will explain it. He is intelligent and tries his best to keep you engaged.
Terrible Professor! Boring class its all essays and summaries and discussions. Read between the lines this is an English class basically. Have fun if you want you to waste your time on reading unnecessary articles!
Hes rude and condescending. Often times grades discussion boards based on his own biases about topics, not facts. 95 was A. Seems to pride himself on low averages. I would avoid
Incredibly tough grader. Stupid grading scale where the minimum for an A is a 95%. He basically makes that nearly impossible. I received a 93.25% in the class with his 3% extra credit boost. He makes the course much more difficult than it has to be.
This professor provided our class with almost no guidance thought the summer semester. We are dealing with a pandemic and had to take the course online yet he very rarely provided any communication with us. His assignments are unclear and confusing. I would absolutely avoid taking his classes.
Very unorganized and unprofessional professor. Gets mad at the students when he forgets to give us information we need to complete assignments. Is disrespectful and condescending to his students. Provides very few resources on Canvas and expects students to be published historians. Instructions are very vague and replies late with horrid replies.
Very unfair professor made an A a 95 and did not tell any students what the grading criteria. Refused to even consider changes. Does not respond to email. DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH HIM.
Very very unclear professor and does not respond to emails. When he does respond it's almost like he did not read the email. Grading scale is very harsh even for an online format. Unclear with homework, not understanding of technical issues. Would not recommend him for an online class.
I love Professor Hani, I took him for all history courses. He is passionate and loves to teach. I would take him again. Thank you, Hani for everything.
I took this class on a whim, turns out, it was one of the hardest things I had to jump into. He does not write directions or notes very clearly, its hard to understand, and he doesn't read emails. He also tells you to refer to the syllabus for everything instead of answering the question. Also very unforgiving and picky on grading.
Wonderful professor! I fell behind, he answered my emails promptly and gave me an opportunity to catch up.
Knowledgeable in his subjects, and is nice. However, his class was horrid. If you did not go to a class, deducted points from overall grade AND homework. Accepted very few excuses. Talks for, literally, hours going on tangents. 4-5 books, expects you to read them. Changed attendance policy 3x. Wants his class to be your main priority it seems.
Kind of a bad professor and unclear of expectations and requirements. If u can take someone else, if not he is okay but has some downfalls
I took Professor Hani for HIST 3601 and HIST 112 and tbh he is very caring and knowledgeable. He is not easy, but nothing is easy. So to get a good grade, do the readings before class. And pay attention in class. Honestly if you do that &don't wait to write his papers last minute you will do fine. He's doesn't do tests online, only papers and DB's,
I took FNDS 3901, he's an amazing grader, very helpful, he's open to discuss anything in class , the material was mostly about Arab Scholar's and no exams just a final paper about a topic related to the class material I would definitely take again.
Took his class in the summer. He gets to the point. The class consisted of discussion boards, research papers, and a final. He grades fairly and leaves helpful comments. I would totally recommend this professor.
This classes and professor isn't bad at all. Very straight forward, however there are better classes.
He gave vague instructions for all assignments and expected us to know exactly what he was asking for. When students emailed him he would take days to respond. Keep waiting until the last second to upload information needed for assignments. When grading he would give poor feedback that did not help at all.
The professor has a very specific teaching style, but engaging with it can pay off. Lecture attendance is key, and using resources like the free textbook and tools like Unstuck AI for study prep can be super helpful.
