Bro. Smith's class has just the right mixture of spiritual meat and humor for me. Seriously hilarious dude!!! If you're permanently attached to your sensitive sweater, maybe take the class from someone else though. Tests are a little tricky; study hard and read the questions carefully! In sum, highly enjoyable and spiritually uplifting. Five stars.
My favorite religion class at BYU. I love his perspective on note taking in his class. Tests can be a little tough, but just make sure you get the review slides and go to the TA review and you'll be just fine. I feel like I learned a lot about the Gospel during this class and didn't just learn how to get an A in the class.
Don't be deterred by the fact that Hank Smith is a popular professor. His class is a relatively easy A and is SO beneficial. This was an incredible religion class. I'm luck to have had Hank Smith as my professor.
Hank Smith is by far my favorite religion professor at BYU. Very spiritual and life changing, but he throws in enough comedy to make the class really interesting and relatable. He grades on just a few things: daily journals/reading, tests and 1 10 page paper. If you take his class, you will not regret it :)
Oh Hank. If only all religion teachers could have his balance between making their classes academic yet spiritual and applicable. I've taken multiple classes from him, and they've all changed my life. You need to take a class from him during your time at BYU. HILARIOUS & inspiring. For an A: come 2 class, go to TA Review &Study the review slides.
If I could vote who the next prophet would be, Hank would be my vote. He is the best teacher at BYU. I love Hank with all of my heart.
Brother Smith found the perfect balance between spirituality and humor without ever coming close to crossing the line. I liked his focus on the application of gospel principles rather than NT history. Tests are a bit more difficult than other religion classes I've taken, but he makes it very clear what material will be covered. Great class.
Brother Smith is by far the most inspiring professor I have had. He cares for your individual success in a class of 200+, and teaches the New Testament in such an engaging and incredible way. Take him! There's a reason he's so popular, because it's life-changing. Please, please take New Testament from him!!!
I've taken a couple classes from Hank, and I think he's made them a little bit more difficult, but that being said they're still pretty easy. Pay attention during the Review Slides, and then sit back and enjoy some of the most uplifting/hilarious lectures you'll hear in all of college. Seriously, he's a Mormon celebrity for a reason.
Brother Smith truly cares about the wellbeing of his students. honestly the funniest teacher I've ever had! also, if you take his class you HAVE TO ask him to tell you "the cactus story", you won't regret it. He'll understand what you mean. Spiritually the class increased my testimony and gave me a deeper understanding/appreciation of Christ.
WOW! One of the best religion professors here. Most of his points come from assigned reading and journal entries as well as two mid terms, a paper, and an exam. He is such an amazing professor. If you want to be inspired, learn a ton, and feel the spirit, take New Testament from Brother Smith.
Hank Smith is maybe my favorite professor at BYU. I've taken REL A 122 and 250 from him, and if I can I'll take more too! His lectures are great, and while he does make you work a little (600 words a week in journals and one long paper) his class is very doable and definitely worth it. He loves his students and does everything he can to help.
Very glad I took this class! This would be a great class to prepare for a mission because you learn about Jesus Christ himself. You absolutely can't miss lectures - but there are very specific review slides of what you need to know for exams. Don't underestimate the tests but if you know the lectures well you're fine. I would definitely recommend!!
Brother Smith is hilarious. His tests can be difficult, but he and the TA give you what you need to study. Even with more difficult tests, his lectures make it worth it. You don't want to miss them because he's amazing.
Phenomenal. His lectures and insights blew me away. I started my days of class with him and I'm so grateful I did because it got me energized for the rest of the day. The exams are tough, but if you go to the review sessions, you'll be pretty well off. Hardest religion class I have taken so far, but by no means is it too much to handle.
Brother Smith is the absolute best. He's SO funny and I really felt the Spirit and learned a ton in his class. There's a fair amount of reading before each lecture (usually 3-4 chapters from the NT and a handful of bible dictionary entries, with the occasional video or conf. talk) but I didn't think it was too bad. There's one paper, tests are easy
literally the coolest guy you'll meet
Make sure you go to his test reviews, If you don't you will not pass the test.
He has the best lectures. His tests are tricky but manageable if you memorize his review slides. 1 paper- not bad. Quite a bit of reading due each class but it's worth it. Class isn't mandatory but it would be in your best interest to go so you can do well on the tests and just because he is an awesome guy. 10/10 guy. 8/10 class.
Great guy. Really funny. If you don't like borderline offensive LDS jokes dont take his class. Everything he puts on the test is taken from a review slide that he presents each class period from the previous lecture. One 8-10 page paper at the end of the semester, but its entirely testimony so it's a breeze. Really cares about you. Take his class!
Brother Smith is a fantastic religion professor. He knows a lot about the scriptures and provides interesting background on the New Testament. During class, he makes lots of jokes but also knows when to be serious. His class is inspiring, interesting and educational, but easy to do well in if you come to class and pay attention.
Great class. Not difficult; it's pretty straight-forward to do well. Just know the review slides, and you'll nail the test. I always enjoyed lecture!
Brother Smith is honestly my favorite professor at BYU. The reading assignments are very reasonable, only one (long-ish but personal in nature so it's not too bad) paper, and he gives you everything that will be on the tests. His lectures are amazing and (dare I say??) life changing!! He does joke, so if you're sensitive to that, be aware!
I learned more about Christ and the roots of His teachings in this class than in any other class I've had here at BYU. Bro Smith is hilarious, informational, and inspired me to seriously change my approach to the gospel and to life. Minimal assignments, daily reading/journal and one 10-page paper. Tests are doable IF YOU ATTEND THE REVIEWS.
Brother Smith is very entertaining and helped me better understand the New Testament. I learned so much in this class that I had never heard before. I would definitely recommend Brother Smith.
Hank is hilarious! I laughed every day in his class. The homework isnt hard, you just have to read a set of scriptures and/or bible dictionary entries and write a short journal entry before each class. If you study the review slides he gives, youll do great on the tests.
HANK IS LITERALLY THE BEST PROFESSOR AT BYU!! I loved his class so much. I learned so much about Christ and was so spiritually strengthened everyday in class. I would recommend this class to everyone! He is so hilarious and I laughed everyday
The best religion professor at BYU! I leave class so inspired & my testimony strengthened. He assigns weekly journals, and you grade yourself on attendance and if you did the readings. Theres one main paper assignment that is basically your testimony. The tests are easy if you come to class. He gives you questions from the test & study guides.
Bro Smith is the best Professor I've had at BYU! His lectures are so good and hilarious. You have to read a few passages and write a journal entry before class, but other than that the only assignment is one paper that is basically your testimony of Christ. He gives you notes from every class and pulls his test questions right off the notes.
Bro. Smith is hilarious and makes class enjoyable. My only complaint is that he makes his tests unnecessarily difficult. Additionally, he'll make you also write a 8-10 pg essay. He's a great teacher, but if your looking for a religion teacher that won't make your work for your grade, then don't take Bro. Smith's class.
Holy cow, I love this man. Hank is a beast and if you learn from humor, this is the class for you. Not necessarily suuuuper spiritual, but still hecka grew my testimony. I laughed so hard every class; I never wanted it to end. He gives you review slides and tests you over those, so it's really fair. Highly highly recommend!!!!!!
The amount of reading for this class is ridiculous. It's more than I've had for all of my classes in a semester before. The tests are really tough if you are a concept person like me and not a memorization spewer. Lectures were great though.
I've said it before, but this is one of the best classes at BYU besides Professor Sweat's REL C 225 and Dr. Pope's CL CV 110. He will change your life with each lecture. His love is evident every time, he will make you laugh so hard, but will be up front with you about difficult things. Please, please take this class from him!!!!
I love Brother Smith. This man will change your life I tell you. I learned so much about Jesus Christ from him and my perspective of life changed drastically. I loved his lectures, every day I learned something new that changed the way I thought of my Savior. He also tells the best stories and he is such a relate able and reliable teacher.
The tests are very difficult (lots of memorizing) and there is a lot of reading and journaling, along with 1 8 page paper (pretty easy), so this class is not an easy A but it is definitely worth taking. Bro. Smith is hilarious and my testimony grew a ton! He gives you notes every day in class, so that's nice because you can just pay attention.
Take Brother Smith! There is work, but it isn't difficult (reading and journal entries). He also has you write a minimum 8 page paper, but it's not hard at all. I loved this class!
He is seriously incredible. I was worried about fitting this class into my schedule this semester but I'm so glad I did. The tests are not hard, just study the review slides. Attendance is mandatory, but it's hard to want to miss. The 10-page paper and journal entries seemed a little excessive, but I learned a lot from them, so it worked out.
His New Testament class is amazing. Journal entries and a 10-page very doable if you don't procrastinate. His lectures are very funny, spiritual, and memorable, which helps with the tests. The tests are not hard if you study from class notes. I learned a lot from attending lectures and doing homework reading assignments on my own as well.
Bro. Smith requires a lot of reading for his class and there is a 10 page paper, but it's so worth it for his lectures. He gives you exactly what's on the test and doesn't require you to take notes in his class, he gives them to you. Entertaining lectures and very spiritual at times as well.
Hank Smith is a gem. One of my favorite religion professors at BYU. Can't say enough nice things about him. His class is spiritual, uplifting, and humorous. He has the best sense of humor. He is very inspirational and I learned something new everyday. His class is a LOT of work for a religion class, but it's so worth it. Take from him please!!!
Brother Smith is awesome. There is way too much reading compared to what is actually discussed and lectures seemed shortened by announcements and answering questions, but he is an incredible teacher. He is hilarious and you will always feel the Spirit and be uplifted. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Tests can be hard if you aren't prepared.
I loved him. I did not attend all of the lectures and I couldn't regret it more. However, there is only one paper, and three tests. They literally tell you what you need to study for in the lectures on slides, and he is funny and spiritual. 100% recommend.
The lectures are amazing: hilarious, mind-blowing, fast-paced. The readings are an unnecessary overkill. Preparing for the exams can be a headache, but we at least have condensed resources (questions are taken from review slides given, but you have to basically memorize them). You will seriously be disappointed every time the bell rings.
Brother Smith is the man. His reputation precedes him. I really don't think you could find a better religion professor at BYU. Just tough enough to make you care, but never stressful. Take a class from Hank at all costs.
This is a great class! Definitely a bit more work than some other religion classes I've taken, but totally worth it because I learned so much more than I thought I could about the gospel. Brother Smith is also hilarious and so much fun to learn from. Everyone should take at least one class from him!
Professor Smith is one of the best professors I've ever taken. He's absolutely hilarious and helped me to see the New Testament in a new light. He is very engaging and cares about his students and gives great insights. Please take his class if you have the chance! He's amazing!
Brother Smith is by far the most entertaining professor I've ever had.
As a student whos taking Professor Smiths Book of Mormon Class, he is a good choice overall. The workload is only a couple hours to do. His lectures are engaging. However, while he doesnt say anything inappropriate, he is lighthearted. If you like serious lectures, he may not be right for you. Otherwise, you should take Professor Smiths class.
Personally, I would never take from Professor Smith again. Yes, he provides review slides that "have everything you need to know for the test" on them- but they only provide maybe 60% of the material on the test, and the tests are extremely specific and stupidly hard for a religion credit, this coming from a premed student who got an A in ochem.
Brother Smith is one of the best religion professors I have had at BYU. No idea why so many people seem to struggle so hard with his tests. Studying the review slides for a bit was always sufficient. Hilarious and educational lectures. Really cares about students. Fair warning though if you can't handle any jokes in a religion class don't take his
Hank is an absolutely amazing professor. He really knows what he is teaching and is passionate about it. He also really really cares about his students. His tests were a lot more difficult than I thought they would be, but don't let that scare you from taking a class from Hank. He rocks.
Loved this class
Taking this class was the best decision I made all semester. Brother Smith knows and LOVES what he teaches, and it makes for an engaging, enlightening, and enjoyable class experience. Posts review slide before each class; tests cover the review slides. Easy. You will learn, your testimony will grow, and it will be the highlight of your semester.
Brother Smith is seriously the funniest guy and his lessons are amazing. Easily the best class I've taken at BYU. Before every class, he puts up a review slide from the previous class and the tests cover those review slides. There's also quite a bit of reading. It's a lot but totally worth it - if you study and go to class, you'll be fine
He's honestly one of my favorite professors as evident by me currently taking his class again. I didn't do as well as I hoped when I took his class before but he was honestly so helpful that I took the class again. The biggest things besides finals that you get graded on is weekly reports and a 300 page report that you have to do before each class
Hank is awesome. Warning, if you are sensitive to gospel jokes, don't take this class, he can be irreverent at times, but it didn't bother me. His lectures are very engaging and applicable to today. The 10 page paper is more like a talk you'd write for church so don't stress about it. Lots of reading sometimes but always informative
Incredible teacher. Prepares you for the tests very well and you will LOVE his lectures.
Brother Smith has been my favorite religion professor at BYU! He can keep the class engaging and entertaining even throughout Covid-19 online school. Need extra light in your life? Take a class from Hank Smith. No regrets.
This is my favorite religion class at BYU .
Need I say more than has been said? Bro. Smith is da best! Wants you to just show up and enjoy lectures, so he gives you review slides with everything you need to know for the test. Study those well, easy As on exams. So you can just sit back, relax, and laugh a ton during his incredible lectures. Grade Weekly journals/reports, 3 tests, 1 paper.
Hank Smith is one of my favorite professors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. I wish there was a Hank Smith major where I could take his classes all the time. TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Honestly, he's a good guy and really entertaining. I took his class for two semesters because the day to day was so easy and it was easy to make up work if you missed a class. He put everything you need to know in one slide the next class. HIS TESTS ARE HARD. if you do all your weekly report every time and get 75% on all the tests you'll get an A-
There is a lot of reading but nothing is too hard about it. His way of teaching wasn't exactly my style but most people like him. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the tests but you still have to study. Class kind of got disorganized when we went online for coronavirus
I took both BOM 121 and 122 with him this year. Brother Smith is awesome. He definitely cares about all of his students a ton. Towards the end of the year it started to bug me a little bit how little of the material we went over in class, but I still love this man. Would definitely reccomend taking a class from him!!!
I was nervous about Rel 250 because I heard it was reading-heavy and the tests were hard. I also heard that the more well-known religion professors were overrated and bad at teaching. My experience could not have been more different. Bro Smith is truly a gem, extremely clear about what would be tested, and helped me actually enjoy a religion class.
I love Brother Smith's classes and was super excited to take another class from him and it did not disappoint! His tests for Book of Mormon tend to be a bit more challenging than his tests for New Testament, but they're totally doable as long as you're willing to study! His lectures are always engaging and I feel spiritually uplifted every time!
Hank Smith is an incredible religion professor at BYU. In past religion classes, I did what I needed to get an easy A. Hank Smith makes you work harder for your grade and requires you read the whole half of the Book of Mormon. Though I had to work harder for a good grade, my testimony grew a lot more in this class than in any other religion class.
This was my 3rd class with him because he's that great. Very clear what we need to do, easy to get an A if you put in effort. I learned a lot, he has awesome insights about the New Testament and makes it understandable. Only complaint is how long the readings are. They would take hours everytime and I didn't even do an in depth study, so beware.
Bro Smith is the best! He really cares about his students and asks us how we're doing. His lectures are amazing and I have a new perspective on the BoM. Make sure you study for the tests, they were hard for me and I've been a member all my life and served a full-time mission. He has you do 300 word responses before each class, but it was easy.
Best decision I made this semester was to take his class. Seriously. He is hysterical, yet his lectures contain such a strong Spirit and leave you hungry for more when the bell rings. Lots of reading and journal entries, and an 8-page paper, but so worth it: honestly my fav experience of the semester; so spiritual and enriching. Take his class!
You MUST take Hank Smith. Best teacher I've had at BYU. So fun and easy. There's 1 paper (8-10 pages), 2 midterms and a final (but he gives you literally everything you need to know in class), bi-weekly journal entries with readings required before each class, and a weekly report asking if you did those 2 things and went to class. 100% recommend.
Professor Smith gives great, inspirational lectures, but his tests focus a lot on things we barely talk about (e.g. Which Gospel author was the only one to give X parable?) instead of the focuses of the lecture. Some of his test questions read like a game show entitled, "Matthew... Luke... or John?!" Great lectures, not so great tests.
So so engaging! Immensely so. One of the biggest highlights of my young adult life, up there with special mission moments. He doesn't want your attention to be on note-taking, so he lets you take pictures of a couple of note slides at the beginning of class so you can soak it up. Bring your personal notebook and soak it all in!! Life-changing.
I LOVE Brother Smith! His lectures are amazing and his class isn't hard. He really wants you to have a spiritual experience in the classroom while learning about the life of Christ. I would take this class again.
I loved this class! It was by far my favorite class of the semester. Prof. Smith is one of the most caring and inspirational professors I've ever had. 10/10 recommend.
Wonderful teacher! All of his lectures were very uplifting and entertaining. However, some of his test questions were difficult and covered things that I believe aren't important to know (i.e. what chapter of the BOM contains this quote from Isaiah?). He only tests on things from class, but I put a lot of time into memorizing unnecessary things.
He gives great lectures and brought a lot of spiritual insight to the class. However, I had this class on demand-remote and it was awful. Everything was so disorganized: lectures never posted on time (days late) and no schedule posted on Learning Suite. Tests were too specific and don't focus much on the truly important stuff. Pretty disappointing.
Professor Smith is amazing! This is the second class I have taken from him. I am planning to take another class from him. He is funny and teaches things about the scriptures that I have never thought about.
He is a fantastic teacher. Although his class does require more work then a 2 credit religion class should, he has fantastic lectures and will help you strengthen your testimony if you put in the work.
Brother Smith's care and intention foster my ideal learning environment. He balances original scholarship with simple truths, and he's entertaining while he does it. His tests and assignments are reasonable--with a Quizlet of his review slides, you can get both an A and a stronger testimony.
Tests contain random specifics, but the review slides and TA reviews are very helpful.
Brother Smith is such a genuine teacher. You can tell that he truly cares about his students and the gospel. The only downside to this class is that you cannot use your Book of Mormon on tests. I didn't think that was too big of a deal as long as you attend the TA test review. Brother Smith is one of the best teachers at BYU!
Professor Smith is an excellent teacher. He relates very well to his students. There is always a bit of reading to do prior to each lecture accompanied with a journal entry and a short participation quiz. Outside of that we wrote like easy paper and took 2 midterms and a final. Easy class and not a big work load for 2 credits.
This class is really great, but don't take it as an "easy religion class". The tests are pretty hard, (especially the final). Seriously, you will need to study a ton. It almost feels like a three credit class. But other than that, it is amazing. The lectures are amazing and the grading criteria is clear. Just don't fall behind.
BROTHER SMITH IS AMAZING!!!!!!!! The TA, Danica, was amazing too!!! I loved his class so much! If you see any negative reviews, you can ignore them!!! His life was crazy this semester, and his family had to take priority, but he always made sure our grades were fair! I do think assignments could've been shown on learning suite more ahead of time.
All the awesome reviews about Br. Smith are true. He is very funny and thoughtful. I rated this a 3.0 on difficulty because the homework is very simple, but tests are a little tricky, just make sure you study the review slides! While Br. Smiths class may be a little bit more difficult than other BOM classes, it is an AMAZING experience! 10/10!!
Brother Smith is so good! He is super understanding and very clear about what assignments will be. My testimony was definitely strengthened and I would take this class every semester if I could! The review slides give you everything you could need for tests and homework each week is super simple.
Brother Smith is the best! He absolutely loves the gospel and loves his students! He has the best sense of humor and knows how to balance it with spirituality. You'll learn a lot from him and do well if you pay attention to the lectures and do the readings.
Brother Smith is a great lecturer; he gives the best insights and does not stray away from hard topics. He really humanizes your scripture heroes. The class itself was pretty easy, especially online. Most of your points come from self-evaluations. The tests are pretty difficult so be prepared to study (know the people and where they are found).
Brother Smith is the best! He is very understanding and wants you to succeed. He offered a big extra credit assignment to raise our scores. For the exams, go to the TA reviews and study the notes Brother Smith tells you to write in class. The class did have a lot of readings, but its worth it for his lectures.
Brother Smith is the absolute best! He's so funny and makes the scriptures incredibly relatable. The class was easy enough, no quizzes or anything just a few journal entries each week and one big paper at the end of the year. The tests are difficult so make sure to look at the TA's review slides since it has all the info you will need to know
Prof. Smith's insights are really special and relevant. I always enjoyed his lectures and often laughed while watching them. The assignments are pretty standard. The exams are specific, but he provides really detailed review slides that the TA also goes over.
Brother Smith is one of the best religion professors I have ever had . I took this class online and regardless of his family issues during the semester, he made the class hopeful and enjoyable. His lectures are super interesting and engaging and there isn't too much work for the class. He gives you sample test questions in every lecture but study!
I loved the class, may be my favorite I've taken at BYU. There was a good amount of reading. You know what to study for the exams. I felt like I knew the 4 gospels really well for the first time ever. I felt like I knew my Savior more personally. I don't know if I have ever looked forward to and missed a class more.
Brother Smith has been the best professor ever! He has had amazing lectures that have made me rethink the way I think about Christ and the atonement. This class has been the single most impactful thing on my faith and I will always be grateful for that. Taking classes from him has been a great experience and I would definitely do it again. 10/10.
I learned more about Christ's life and the New Testament than I ever could have imagined in Dr. Smith's class. He was really a gem. Although the class was all online and the lectures were pre-recorded, you can really tell that he loves and cares for his students.
His tests are crazy specific and his lectures weren't my style. You pretty much have to memorize the 4 gospels to do well on his test. someone once told me to never take celebrity professors because they get a big head about their classes, and I find that true with Prof. Smith.
I love Hank so much!!! His lectures were so worthwhile. HOWEVER, his tests are the hardest religion tests I've ever taken. Closed not closed book, and so many things to memorize! I love Hank, but seeing that I can listen to his podcasts and not get tested on it, probably wouldn't take him again.
Bro. Smith is such a wonderful teacher! His lectures always brought the spirit in such a wonderful way. Passing the class was not hard b/c the week's work consisted of a few readings and 2 journal entries. He was so dedicated to his students and has such a strong testimony. Really made me feel prepared to go on a mission. Don't take anyone else!!
Great lecturer. You'll learn useful info and your testimony of the Savior will grow. However, it's a bit more work than your average religion class. Required 8-10 page paper, and he tests on very specific random facts. If you want a spiritual experience and are willing to do the work, take his class. If you want a chill, easier class, keep looking.
Hank Smith is one of the best people ever. He is so loving and thoughtful, and still portrays that over video. He is amazing at teaching gospel concepts and making you think about things. He is the best teacher I've had at BYU. Thank you Brother Smith!
Incredible teacher and a great class! You won't want to miss the lectures because they are amazing and he clearly tells you everything you need to know for the tests. It was a super interesting study topic. I am 100% trying to take a class with Brother Smith again.
I have loved all my religion professors but I have learned the most from Brother Smith. I had him for Book of Mormon and Christ and the Everlasting Gospel and it changed my life. HIGHLY recommend taking at least one class from him. He tells you what will be on the test but you still have to put in the work to study. He truly wants you to learn.
He's awesome!
Hank is so loving, funny, and genuine. This class has strengthened my relationship with Christ and increased the presence of the spirit in my life SO MUCH. Lots of reading, but it's worth it. I know the four gospels way better than I did before. If you listen in class and study straight from the review slides, you'll do well on the tests!
Hank Smith is AMAZING, but his paper was harder than it needed to be. Also the tests are TOUGH. MAKE SURE you go to TA reviews. The only way I passed was because of those reviews.
I highly recommend taking a class from Hank Smith!! His lectures are so interesting and entertaining and I learned so much about the gospel! Some people say his tests are hard, but If you study for the tests, you'll get an A. Just make a quizlet from the reviews and you'll be fine!
Hank is an amazing teacher and the only real class I was excited to go to just to hear his lectures. HW is easy and you have the whole schedule right from day 1. The large paper towards the end of the semester is the only thing that makes the class remotely challenging.
Excellent teacher. A lot of reading, but his lectures are worth it. My only con is he tends to shut down people whose opinions on non-essential matters (like was Jesus married?) don't match his own. Doesn't happen often, but it happened to me. Tests are pretty tough, so if you're looking for an easy A, this isn't it. But it is an easy B/B+.
Hank Smith is an amazing professor. If you want to understand the Book of Mormon a little deeper, then you will love his class. If you want a good laugh, you will also love his class. All that said, his tests are kind of hard. They are very specific, but if you study the review slides you will be fine.
I loved going to lectures and this was my favorite class this semester. The tests were a little more difficult than I anticipated, but the review guides tell you exactly what is going to be on the exams.
Brother Smith is the best Book of Mormon professor. His lectures were always funny, engaging, and spiritual at the same time. He makes things simple. Read the chapters, show up to class, and you can get an easy A. If you are taking Book of Mormon, 100% take it from him.
HIs lectures are some of the best you can find at BYU. I don't really get how people complain about his tests being hard when he literally gives you all the information that he will use on the tests. Class average is usually like 88%, they really are not that bad. Worth it to have to study a little bit for his amazing and funny lectures.
This class was an absolute joy; I would not have changed a single thing about it. Professor Smith was hilarious while still inviting the Spirit, and homework was not bad at all. Obviously, it's a Book of Mormon class, so you have to read the book, but beyond that, we had weekly journals and attendance records, and that's it. Would 100% recommend.
He is a great man, but I was drawn in by his fame to take the class haha. He is hilarious and makes class captivating. His tests though are extremely intense. And class isn't very spiritual because it is more content of the Book of Mormon based instead of what it can teach us type vibe. I think for some people he would be perfect, but not for me.
Brother Smith helped me a lot this semester, I looked forward to his lectures every Tuesday and Thrusday. The class isn't super well organized but the expectations and clear and you will grow in knowledge of the Book of Mormon for sure. Easy A if you show up to class, read the chapters and pay attention.
Bro Smith is hilarious and truly amazing! Readings and journal entry before each class (you grade yourself on these each week), three exams, and a 10-page paper. Review slides with info to know for the test given at the beginning of each class, but you must attend to get those. Tests are a little hard, but I still did fine. Take this class!!
Brother Smith was absolutely amazing to learn from. The workload wasn't too bad for this class either. We had readings and journals (300 words) to complete before each class. At the beginning of each class, he gave us a slide with information that we could expect to see on exams. There were a total of three exams and one 7 page final paper.
I loved taking Book of Mormon from Brother Smith. You can tell he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. At the beginning of each class he shows a slide with things that you'll need to know for the exams, so make sure you show up to every class to see that. His lectures are hilarious, and I went to each class looking forward them.
Hank Smith is an incredible person and professor and I learned a lot from him. However, his tests are WAY too hard. They are so detail-based and tricky. His tests are pure memorization. I agree with another student's review that said if you can listen to his podcasts for free, do that instead of taking a class from him that could hurt your GPA.
Hank is legendary for good reason. His lectures are spiritual, hilarious, and factual. I feel like I actually KNOW the Book of Mormon. Exams are not easy; you do have to study, but I felt like that was good. My only issue is that Hank is relaxed and easily distracted (lol), so he would go off on extended tangents forever. Drove me nuts sometimes.
Great professor, reputation precedes him. Great, dynamic lectures that were posted twice a week. Term paper that is really easy. Typical self-reporting quizzes for reading/attendance like most religion classes. Really fun class and would definitely take him again for any other religion class I could.
Lots of reading but it all was needed! Lectures were incredible and I came way closer to Christ!
I LOVED this class!!! It's not too hard as long as you go to class (and TA reviews) and do the readings!! Brother Smith tells you everything you need for the midterm/final and is so fun and engaging!!
Great lectures that are inspiring, insightful, engaging, and humorous and times. But his tests are ridiculous. Imagine the most specific, pump-and-dump memorization questions you could think of in a BYU religion class 10 page paper due at the end of the semester, one TA to grade 300 papers so the chance of a grade reflective on quality is low
I wanted to love Bro Smith but this class was a letdown. Tests were way too difficult and 80% of class time was spent answering random questions rather than lecturing. When he was actually teaching the class was great. For a 2 credit class though, the amount of time and energy spent on it wasn't worth it.
Excellent lectures, take this class if you have a good memory and have good attendance goals. His tests are consistently hard, but rarely have material that isn't on the lecture slides. Very energetic and enthusiastic, all in all a good professor!
I love Hank Smith, he is a really great guy, super caring, and he does a good job making the lectures interesting. However, the tests are super difficult and extremely specific. If I didn't go to the test reviews with his TA definitely wouldn't have done as well.
Brother Smith is an awesome religion professor. His humor really helped me to learn about the nature of Christ, the historical context of Christ's times, and his class really bolstered my testimony. There were a few times that his humor went too far for my liking, but overall I enjoyed his class. Manageable workload and easy final paper.
Brother Smith's lectures are always engaging and entertaining and make the scriptures feel very real. He's got a lot of knowledge of the historical context and original languages of the scriptures, so if you want to you'll become both faithful and competent. He acknowledges that his tests are hard but he gives you plenty of resources to succeed.
The lectures were always entertaining and Brother Smith is very knowledgeable. The readings were a lot but manageable and the tests were pretty hard for a two-credit religion class.
Hank is awesome!! Very entertaining lectures!!! People don't talk enough about really how hard the tests can be. I have received the lowest test score in college from his tests. His finals are very tricky as well.
His class was perfect because he is so real and so funny, but you learn SO much. He changed how I read the BoM. Not sure why people hate his tests because I just went to his TA review session and memorized his review slides and didn't struggle at all. If you like to laugh and have entertaining lectures, he is the perfect teacher. I loved his class!
I've taken several religion classes before, but this is the first one I've actually thoroughly enjoyed. The lectures were informative but also so inspiring! There was a lot of reading, but, for the first time, they were actually applicable to what we discussed in class. The tests really aren't hard, unless you're a freshman or you've never studied.
I really loved learning from Professor Smith. Great teacher, really funny, and keeps you engaged. There are three tests and 1 paper but there are TA reviews before each test that help a lot and the paper is pretty simple. Overall really good experience and I felt the spirit in class a lot!
Amazing at explaining the BoM!! Have never understood it before like I do now! I learned SO much. Gives you all you need to know for the tests, and TA reviews. Tests actually arent the worst and are a good reflection of your understanding of the BoM and what weve been learning.
I loved having Professor Smith as a religion teacher! He is so funny and sincere. If you want to have a great time in class and not stress about tests because his slides give you all the answers then take this class you will not regret it!
I don't know why there are so many negative reviews on here, Hank Smith is the best! He teaches in a way that makes it easy to understand and where you want to learn. I understand the Book of Mormon so much more now! I will say, his tests are a little difficult, but as long as you study and read the assigned readings, you'll do fine.
This class is awesome!! Brother Smith is great at connecting with his students and making his lectures interesting! Super easy class as well, as he literally gives you everything you need to know for the tests. I never scored under a 90 on any tests and studied for maybe a few hours each time. He is a little full of himself, but a good guy!
I loved this class! Attendance is mandatory for most of the semester, but Brother Smith does a fantastic job. He has opened my understanding of The New Testament and changed the way I think about things I have been taught my whole life. The class really is not that difficult and if you do the homework, you'll be fine!
Prof Smith's lectures are 10/10. The guy is hilarious, and he knows so much about the gospel. I learned so much in this class and gained a greater appreciation of the Bible from it. I didn't think the exams were hard but I can understand why some people did. There was a ten page paper, but it was really framed as more of a journal than anything.
I loved this class! Brother Smith is so funny and you can tell he absolutely loves and cares about his students. He constantly asked us how we were and what was going on in our lives. He had some really great insights about the New Testament and Christ, and my testimony really grew in this class. Take from Brother Smith! :)
SUPER HARD TESTS! Had to memorize soooo many dates and tiny quotes. The test questions are very detail oriented and hard. His lectures are really funny and he doesn't take anything very seriously. The readings take TONS of time. Felt hard to get an A- in a religion class....
Hank Smith is such an amazing professor! He is so knowledgeable and shares the best insight! You can tell that he truly cares about his students and genuinely wants them to succeed. His lectures are very entertaining and he teaches the gospel in ways that his students understand. If I could I would have him teach all the classes that I take at BYU!
Hands down best professor at BYU. My favorite religion class. I learned so much about the Bible and about Jesus. Every single lecture was inspiring. If you think his tests were hard, you either didn't attend or you haven't taken many religion classes at BYU yet. He flat out tells you the questions and the answers on the exams.
Brother Smith completely changed my perspective on the Gospel. I've taken a few of his classes now and every time I hear Brother Smith's perspectives, I feel like I know the Lord better. Bro Smith is hilarious and approachable and he makes Christ feel that way too. His exams can be tricky but I'm so glad that we learned about the Gospel rigorously!
Brother Smith is a great lecturer and a great religious scholar. This will not be a emontional experiance for most, at least it wasn't for me. But, the study of The Book of Mormon elevated my spirituality through intelectual channels. His tests were really easy. You have to study for them, but if you go the the reveiw and study its a cake walk
Smith is a great teacher, but his tests are incredibly hard. You have to memorize so many dates and quotes that I feel are irrelevant to the course. I'd rather get tested on details of parables or the doctrine than the date a certain battle happened. In addition to the multiple-choice final, a 10-page essay was assigned. Prepare for lots of work!!
So funny. Comedy show. Very engaging. Gives exam answers if you come to class. Average exam score was 95%. Guaranteed A if you show up and do two weekly journal entries. Take from Hank.
Don't need to say much about Hank Smith; he's just awesome. You'll probably love his class no matter what. He's super funny and wants you to succeed.
This class is called Christ and the Everlasting Gospel. Yet the class is not Christ centered at all. Honestly sad. Would not take from Professor Smith unless you want to spend a ton of time on busy work and memorizing weird facts instead of focusing on Him and His life.
Professor Smith is great! His lessons are informational and he leaves the spiritual part to your personal study. He's a knowledgable professor and very funny. I would recommend him to anyone.
Brother Smith is such an amazing person and I absolutely loved his lectures. However, we did have to do a lot of readings and a journal entry of 300 words every class. Additionally, the tests took a lot of studying if you wanted to do well on them. But he does give you several answers ahead of time, and review slides at the beginning of each class.
I absolutely loved Hank Smith's class! He really helped me understand the scriptures better! His class was a joy to attend every week. His tests can be hard; however, he gives you plenty of options to do well on the test. He will literally give you test questions if you come to class. Additionally, the TA will tell you what to study
Brother Smith is spiritually edifying and straight up super funny. You learn a lot in this class. It's also really really easy even if you put in just a tiny bit of effort. No one should be getting lower than like a B+ in this class if I'm being honest. The tests are very forgiving. One large paper but it's fun! Only good things to say about Hank.
This class was deceivingly difficult, but you will learn so much! Brother Smith is probably the best teacher/professor I've ever had and I really loved this class. Just be ready to work. Make sure and attend all the lectures because that's where he gives a lot of tips for the final/midterm:)
I LOVE Brother Smith so much. He makes class fun and interesting (but if you don't want a religion class where your professor cracks jokes this class is not for you) and he explains the history and principles behind certain scriptures and teachings. If I could take all my religion classes from him I would.
Brother Smith's lectures are funny and engaging. Make sure to attend class - he gives a lot of help with tests in class. He is arguably one of the best religion teachers on campus. I learned so much and was pretty mind-blown in every lecture. Reading assignments are not too time-consuming. You only have one big paper that is easy. 10/10 recommend
Professor Smith is an INCREDIBLE teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable, and provides a lot of historical/cultural context for gospel topics. He will help you think of the gospel in new ways. He's always willing to help outside of class and cares a lot about students. He'll give you test answers/good reviews as well!
This class was freaking awesome. I absolutely loved it and it really helped me build my testimony. He's so funny and cares deeply about the gospel and his students. Can't recommend this class enough.
THE BEST TEACHER! Brother Smith is an awesome guy who teaches such cool things about the gospel. He is so funny, kind, and friendly. He goes over everything that will be on the tests in class, and the TA review sessions before the tests are crucial. Most people in my class got an A on his tests. Take his class!
Hank Smith is an inspirational professor that can make the gospel relatable. But I will honestly say this class did not strengthen my testimony of my Savior Jesus Christ at all. I felt like all I was doing was memorizing dates, quotes, and scriptures. It was harder and more memorize heavy than my history class I took in the same semester.
If you can, TAKE THIS CLASS FROM BROTHER SMITH. He is an incredible professor, his lectures are hilarious but also so meaningful. He gives a review slide with all the information from the previous class so you don't have to take notes, and the class is so well organized. If you go to the review sessions you'll ace the tests. 11/10 recommend.
Hank is the best religion teacher I've ever had. He gives you review slides each class that tell you exactly what will and won't be on the tests so you don't have to stress about taking notes. The TA is also very accessible and gives a review before each test. If you want to smile and laugh while learning about the gospel then take his class!
Love brother Smith! Lectures are great, learned a lot that was really interesting, tests were reasonable, and he's hilarious! Have him tell you his cactus story on the last day of class.
You already know Hank Smith. He is incredible. If you miss a lecture you are the one missing out not him. He gave out most of the exam answers in class. He has a great TA. Overall, my favorite BYU class ever.
He shows you a test review page at the beginning of each class and will saying things like "so on the test i might as you ___". Write what he says then!!! Don't worry about memorizing the entire page, just memorize what he says while he's showing it. I recorded the 5 minutes of each class that he said and it gave me a ton of the test answers.
I don't think I can really add anything onto what everyone else has said. He's an amazing lecturer and he cares about his students! Some may find the content he has you memorize for the tests a little tedious, but he has a purpose behind all of it. You will come away understanding the context of the scriptures so much better.
Professor Smith is knowledgeable, inspiring, and funny. The structure of the class is great, I think all religion classes should be like this. Moderately sized scripture readings, biweekly scripture journals, grade your own attendance, one big paper/project. Prepares you super well for exams, they aren't difficult if you pay attention in class.
Obviously he's a great lecturer, awesome guy, passionate about the gospel and cares about his students. The tests are really tough though and pretty much history-based, so if history is not your thing you'll struggle. He and his TA were rough graders. Kinda inappropriate to assign a "testimony paper" as the final project AND grade so harshly on it
He is an amazing lecturer. He's very passionate about the gospel. However, the tests were all based on what memorizing what happened in which chapters. If you're good a memorization, then you'll do fine. By the end of this class, I felt like I was being graded on my testimony, which is the opposite of what a religion class should be.
Hank Smith knows and loves the gospel and does a great job at teaching his students. It is a very easy class and if you show up and pay attention (which isn't hard because he makes his lectures really engaging) you will get an A. He blew my mind with new insights about the Book of Mormon every class period, it was amazing!
Brother Smith is inspiring for anyone who comes to class with a desire to learn important truths by the Spirit.
Brother Smith taught me so much about the Book of Mormon! I always looked forward to class. He makes lectures entertaining and often will have class discussions. There is a good amount of reading and writing required but the work is worth it. It is easy to get an A. He gives out some of the test questions and makes the tests easy. Take it from him!
My A minus was more my fault than the difficulty of the class itself. Always know when every assignment is due. The TA was great, and as long as everything is turned in on time, you almost never get less than anything right around full credit (even on the papers). The tests can be difficult if you struggle with memorization. Memorize his reviews.
The only thing to watch out for are the exams. They are a bit more difficult than most religion classes but still a lot easier than the average class. He gives you all the info on the exam, you just need to memorize a lot of information. His lectures are awesome.
Brother Smith is amazing! He tells good, relatable stories and brings the spirit so well into class. You can tell that he just KNOWS the gospel is true and he really helped me love the Book of Mormon.
This class changed the way that I view the BOM. Seriously BYU is so lucky to have bro smith. Going to his class was a joy, and I learned SO MUCH. As long as you study for his tests you will do great! I actually liked his tests because it was clear what I had to study and in the process I learned so much! Alyssa was an amazing TA.
He gives you study guide slides from last lecture at the beginning of every lecture. If you study those then you'll pass the tests. If you get the easy reading/participation points, then you should have no problem getting an A in the class. He's super funny and shares good insights. He tries to get to know as many students as he can.
Hank Smith is one of the best religion professors for a reason. His lectures are so engaging, enlightening, and entertaining. He has such a captivating way of teaching.
I can honestly say that Brother Smith's class strengthened my testimony of the Book of Mormon. Besides being the funniest professor I've ever had, he also gives very engaging lectures and the homework load is minimal. I found the exams to be easy (he gives you all of the answers) but beware they are memorization based. You should take this class.
You will have to write a 10 page paper on Christ for Hank's REL250 class. That's the hardest part. The tests are straightforward if you attend lectures, and he even gives you a lot of the test questions directly. Smith wasn't my favorite professor but his class was fair and I see why a lot of people like him.
I DO NOT like how this class is set up. Every class he gives you a slide for the next exam that is just packed with bullet points. The exams are based on JUST what is on those slides so you have to memorize it all. It feels like I am memorizing the ENTIRE Book of Mormon between all the conference talks and direct scriptures you have to know.
He's entertaining, but for a class focused on Christ & his gospel, it wasn't as spiritually focused as I would've imagined/wanted. He focused a little too much on making people laugh, which took away from the subject matter. He required a 300 word journal entry about the readings for each day of class. It wasn't hard but seemed kinda redundant.
This class is solid if you want to understand the new testament. Make sure to do the reading if you want to get the most out of this class. The exams are easy if you show up to class and study. There is a 10-page paper due near the end of the semester but it is quite easy if you have been going to class. I Highly recommend this class.
His class is easily the best class I have ever taken. He gives you all the answers to the tests if you go to class, he gives fantastic lectures, and is super funny! At the end of the semester, there is a 7-page paper, but that is the ONLY challenging assignment and the prompt is very open-ended. I would 100% take another religion class from him.
Best professor I've ever had. Love his stories and he brings the book of mormon to life. Work is manageable and he sets super clear expectations of work and tests. I loved every moment of his class, wish he had more classes offered. I am tempted to retake the same class again for fun. If you don't like humor and the gospel don't take Hank Smith.
He makes learning about the gospel fun and engaging. He gives you all of the information for the tests on a single review slide in each lecture.
Do yourself a favor and take REL A 250 from Hank Smith. He's the best. Simply do the journal entries/readings before class, enjoy his amazing lectures, do the easy post-class weekly report, go over the review slides before the exams, and don't procrastinate the 10 page Living Christ paper too badly and you'll get an A no problem.
He is an amazing speaker and teacher and does a great job engaging the class. His tests are a lot of memorization, but if you study they aren't unbearable. I love how he incorporates humor into the gospel and creates an environment where you can have fun and still learn in a spirit-filled area.
Hank is such an amazing teacher and is super funny! I learned a lot more about the New Testament! He provides review slides and the TA Julia gave exam review sessions that pin-pointed almost exactly what was on the test. The exams are in the testing center and you will have to memorize the material. Overall not too hard to get an A.
Taking from Bro Smith was what a religion class at BYU should be! The main homework of the course was reading the assigned scriptures and doing a journal entry before every class, and then in lecture he reviews what we need for the test before jumping into the content. He is super funny but also teaches really profound and meaningful doctrine.
I really wanted to enjoy this class, but I spent so much time feeling so stressed and overwhelmed by memorization and frantically trying to remember quotes and stories than I did feeling the Spirit. If you are well-versed with the Book of Mormon I'm sure you'd thrive in this class.
Amazing professor! I learned a ton and had a great time in class. He makes things fun and memorable. He tells you exactly what you need to know for exams and the homework is basically just a short journal on what you read. Loved this class!
This class was so uplifting and fun! I learned so much and always enjoyed going to class. The exams were easy because the TA does reviews and literally tells you everything that's going to be on it. There is one big paper that's easy to get full points on. There are weekly 300 word write ups. Super great and easy class, take from hank!
HANK SMITH IS AS AWESOME AS HE SOUNDS!! He taught such great lessons and increased my love for the Book of Mormon!! Through his personal stories and funny jokes he made me excited to go to class! We had one essay and a few tests and weekly journal entries which were very manageable!! I loved this class! I highly recommend!
Brother Smith knows his stuff and is a great lecturer, but his class is set up in a way that focuses on memorization rather than learning which was frustrating to me. The tests are hard because you have to memorize slides and slides of information but if you actually know all of it you'll be just fine. Liked the class, hated the testing style.
LOVED this class. He made the Book of Mormon really come alive. His tests require you to know what happens in chapters and books, but I loved that. Not an easy A: you'll have to study and do readings, journals, and a paper. If you want an easy religion credit, pick someone else. If you want to know the Book of Mormon, take it from Hank Smith.
Take this class from him. Bro. Smith is super funny and has a way of making the Book of Mormon come alive. If you want to succeed, you need to come to class for the review slides that he shows at the beginning of class. The tests are pretty simple if you study the review slides, as he discourages note taking so you can pay attention to the lecture.
He is so funny and explains things about Christ and His life so well. He basically gives you all the test answers if you go to class. The only thing that is kind of hard is the 10 page paper, but it wasn't graded very strict at all.
Easy A. Take his class 100%. His TA give you all the answers to the exams basically.
The best. The only religion class that I do not get bored in. He gives you plenty of resources to do well on the exams. The 10 page paper is a big assignment but not the worst if you spread it out and get it done early.
I have taken classes with this professor before and love every second. He believes that humor and religion can go together and uses it to help us understand the scriptures and Christ's ministry in a modern way. One of the best classes I've ever taken. If you think Brother Smith would not be good for you, listen to one of his youth talks on YouTube.
Brother Smith is a great professor and has amazing lectures. The tests are pretty difficult, however and there's lots of reading but other than weekly journal entries and a big paper at the end it's not too bad of a work load. He's super fun to listen to and emphasizes enjoying the lectures more than taking notes.
I really loved this professor he was an amazing teacher, however his lecture style is hard to memorize things for the test.n
Hank Smith is my favorite religion teacher at BYU. His lectures are so interesting that time flies by. The workload is light but the tests go into detail. Go to the TA review before each test because they basically give you the answers. 10/10 recommend, so spiritually strengthening.
This is an amazing class. Brother Smith is so hilarious and time goes by so quickly. As long as you study the test aren't too bad.
Lectures are hilarious and invite the spirit. Day-to-day assignments aren't too much work. But his tests are difficult. His tests are finishing quotes, who said quotes, where quotes are from, and dates. It feels impossible and unimportant. There's a 10-page paper but it's not too difficult. I do not recommend taking this class from him.
Loved his class! The tests were very memorization heavy which is hard for me. I recommend going to the TA review or watching the Zoom she posts. This will help you get an A.
Great fun lectures. Memorize the slides shown at the beginning of class and you'll be fine for the 2 midterms and final. TA review also helps a ton. He sometimes gives answers to the tests during his lectures. Very fun and uplifting. 10 page paper is a pain but if you work on it ahead of time, you'll be fine.
He is a very funny professor. However, I had trouble understanding his teachings. He kind of expected his students to have a perfect knowledge of the scriptures. I did not do well on his tests and they were very doctrine heavy. If you aren't a scriptorian or don't exactly know a lot about the specific details from the stories, I don't recommend.
Very funny and engaging; tests are heavy on memorization but he tells you exactly what you need to know.
LOVED this class. Not hard at all. There is one big paper at the end, but you just write about your relationship with Christ so it was really enjoyable. You have to study for the tests but the T.A's set you up perfectly for them. No surprises. Also Brother Smith is truly the greatest teacher and I wish all my classes were from him.
Bro Smith is a great guy! Don't take if you don't love humor mixed in with religion. Jokes felt unnecessary at times. Tests were somewhat difficult considering how memorization it was. He LOVES the history of Israel so the class is heavy on that. Unfortunately I don't love it as much as he does so it was hard to follow along sometimes.
He is funny and high energy. Everyone loves him. The class is pretty easy and reviews for the test are the biggest help. There is a paper that is more graded on effort and the weekly assignments are reflections on what you learned. The assignments helped me learn more and made the lectures more fun. Great class would recommend.
One of my favorite professors at BYU. I really enjoyed Brother Smith's teaching style. His presentations were well organized and had an easy to follow flow of information. He encourages participation during lectures and cares for his students.
This was easily my favorite class this semester! Brother Smith's lectures are very engaging, teach you the material (both for the test and to understand the doctrine for life), and at least once per week I walked away from class inspired to be a better disciple of Christ. Go to class and you shouldn't have any problem on the tests.
He's hilarious so it makes going to class fun. His teaching/lecture style might not be for everyone though. He makes a lot of jokes and doesn't go in depth on some concepts and just asks you to memorize what's on the test. So if that's not your thing, take a different professor. If you go to class/TA reviews you'll do well on the tests.
okay I love hank smith as much as everyone else here does but BRUH his exams are legit hard. they were the hardest exams out of all my classes this past semester. a lot of memorization and history and scripture things. his lectures can also get a little crazy sometimes. good professor otherwise!
Professor Smith is the BEST religion professor at BYU! Definitely take as many religion classes from him as possible. Anyone who says his class is hard is lying, he literally gives you the answers for the tests and the TA reviews give you everything. You will learn so much about the scriptures and gain a bunch of cool insights! Highly recommend!
Brother Smith is a great guy with a fantastic sense of humor. However, in lectures he seemed to easily get distracted and would rush through his slides. The 10 page paper is very excessive. Tests are okay. I'll be taking my remaining religion credits from other professors.
He is an awesome guy and a very entertaining speaker, but the amount of work needed to exceed in Christ and His Everlasting Gospel class was unnecessary. A 10 page paper and a 100+ question final in any two-credit course is way too much in my book. I also was hoping to learn more about Christ's actual gospel, but instead it felt like Bible history.
Hank Smith strengthened my testimony at BYU. This is who you want to take for religion. He is one of the funniest people I have ever met and is amazing at teaching the gospel. He helped me strengthen my relationship with Heavenly Father and always gave me a good laugh. You do personal journals every day and one paper, but tests are straightforward.
Hank certainly lives up to the fame, if you want to laugh every lecture, definitely take from him! I will admit though, it was rare to have frequent spiritual moments since we laughed pretty much the whole time, and that's my only complaint! He sure knows his stuff and has an incredibly strong testimony!
Best religion class I have ever taken at BYU. Lectures are insightful and engaging. He tells you exactly what he is going to put on the test so you know exactly what to study. Never been happier with a religion class, ever.
Very overrated. Class is focused more on the history of BOM rather than principles and doctrine. 300+ word journal responses due every class. Tests are very hard for a religion class - he gives a review slide each class that the test is based off of, so just try and memorize those. There's a 10 page paper as well which is a bit excessive.
Hank Smith knows his stuff. But his lectures are all historical based and not principle based. If you are looking for an an easy A DONT take this class. 600 words of writing are required each week, a 10 page paper l, and the tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Would not recommend.
Brother Smith is such a great professor. I learned so much about the Book of Mormon from a historical perspective and left each class feeling uplifted. He prepares you very well for the exams, and though studying is definitely required for his exams, you will do great if you study the material he provides. Take a class from Brother Smith at BYU!!
Bro Smith has been my favorite religion professor. His lectures are so entertaining and I have learned so much about the Book of Mormon. You read multiple chapters of the BOM every week and write journal entries but its great personal study. 10 page paper too. He literally gives you the info that will be on the tests so if you study you're good.
Brother Smith is worth all of the hype. He is super funny and does make light of things so maybe not for the faint of heart... He explains things uniquely and helps you understand the history and connection of the BOM. Tests ARE NOT HARD if you go to class, get the review slides, and UNDERSTAND THEM.
Honestly I will never understand why some think this class if difficult. If you go to class and pay attention, tests are easy. Winging the first one I got a 94 percent. There are little journals due every week but they are easy. Amazing guy who somehow balances spiritual experiences and amazing humor. Love this man and would recommend him.
I absolutely love Professor Smith, I would take his class if I was auditing the class and not taking it for a grade. The class is very test heavy and chaotic. I loved the class atmosphere however, he rarely taught. It was constant funny rambles which were great! But regarding learning and feeling prepared? missed the mark for me. Amazing man fr.
If you do not go to class you will not do well. This is a religion class that is focused on spiritual literacy, so you will need to memorize BOM chapters and their contexts. Bro Smith is really entertaining, but I will say his class felt a bit more geared towards pre-missionary students. That has more to do with culture rather than content.
Hank Smith is a fantastic lecturer. You can tell that he really cares about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the students. 600+ words per week and 2-8 chapters per class period. Weekly reports were awful, lost a TON of points on them because I didn't do all the readings or 300 word journals before class. 10 page paper or project required
Very good speaker and interesting to listen to... but often goes on tangents unrelated to the BOM. The tests were unnecessarily hard. The reviews do not help. You have to write a 10-page paper and take 3 tests. (I do not recommend it, there are definitely easier religion classes!!!)
Personally thought the workload was fine for 2 credits...Bro Smith is AMAZING, so funny, knows so much, and is great at explaining things well and teaching with stories. if you don't go to lecture consistently you'll be lost (missing a couple days is ok) but honestly it's so good you won't want to miss!
If you like funny, knowledgable, story-teller, and rambler, then take it from him. People say you cant feel the spirit, you can, but it just depends if you like his style of teaching. Really helps you understand the scriptures better. Tests are really hard (straight memorization) but go to TA review, narrows down what you need to know.
Brother Hank is a phenomenal teacher! This class has been my favorite religion class at BYU so far! I will say, the exams can be HARD. Brother Hank gives you review slides every class, but it is very much "what happened in this chapter." There is a 10 page paper as well, but I did not think it was bad at all! biweekly journal entries too.
Lectures are awesome, and Brother Smith is super engaging. Tests are on the tougher side, requiring a lot of memorization and stress (because who doesn't stress in the testing center?) There are quite a few assignments and a paper/project throughout the semester.
Brother Smith is hilarious, and you learn a lot from the class. He gives a review slide every class with ALL the material you might need to know for the tests, so as long as you show up to class and review the material he gives you it's an easy class. Super engaging professor. Don't take him if you don't like to mix humor and religion though.
Really funny and I liked him but tbh I thought I would like him more. Good but nothing as magical as I expected. I feel like I did not really learn too much, just a lot of plot memorization- I love the nitty-gritty scriptorian approach- this is a lot like a seminary class with 200 people. Tests are easy if you want to memorize lil bits, not if not
Hilarious professor, don't take him if you don't like jokes in religion classes. Tests aren't that hard, TA reviews give you all you need. I studied for ~2.5 hours and got A+ both times. Gave the most engaging lectures out of any other religion professor I've had, good mix of spiritual and funny. 10 page paper is devotional so it's not terrible.
Favorite religion professor. Also the funniest professor I've ever had. Your grade based on a journal entry before class about the readings, a 10 page paper due the end of the semester, and 3 tests. Alyssa is BY FAR the best TA because her test review slides are word for word on the test. Study those slides for a few hours and you'll be golden.
Not the easiest religion class you'll take but Hank is a funny dude. He get's on tangents a lot in class but makes class engaging and fun. Tests require you to memorize a decent amount. Use TA reviews and treat the tests like any other test and you'll do fine. Requires biweekly journals and a 10 page paper at the end of class.
Brother Smith is incredible. Genuinely increased my testimony SO MUCH. my only complaints were the 10 page paper (graded super easy tho), and tests that you kinda had to study for. A solid 1-2 hours of studying should prep you well enough for each midterm/exam. The class is not hard at all if you go to lectures and cram for 1-2 hours before tests
Really fun class. Such a funny guy who's fun to learn about the BOM from. I already read the BOM a lot so the daily readings + journal entries weren't much of a burden, and I already knew most of what showed up on the tests. He gives review slides so there's plenty of opportunity to know what'll be on the test. Fun class if you try.
Hank Smith is amazing, you already know this. If you go to class he preps for perfectly for every exam. You have to not care to get a bad grade.
Brother Smith is amazing! He's fun, he's funny and makes the class enjoyable. Readings aren't bad and just have weekly quizzes to go along with each which just ask if you went to class and completed the reading! I've taken two of his classes and the exams are easy if you go to class he shows slides of what will be on the exam!
Bro Smith is a hilarious and engaging professor. While the workload can be heavy, his classes are so entertaining that you won't want to miss them. Unstuckstudy AI proved super helpful for prepping for the tricky exams.
I was looking forward to taking Hank's class for years, and I was not at all disappointed! He is one of my favorite people in the world. His lectures are so amazing that I continued attending even when I wasn't taking his class. He knows so much about the gospel and the scriptures and I love his humor. He really loves the Savior and his students!
I LOVE THIS MAN. He makes your heart happy and teaches you so much about the scriptures. He he hates tests becuase this is a religion class and thats dumb. He teaches through humor and stories. I have never learned so much about the scriptures. He is so awesome. You do have to write a 10 page paper but its not hard its like a talk.
Hank smith is one of the best teachers I have ever had. The way he teaches the Book of Mormon is like no other and is incredibly effective at getting principles and lessons across. Really the only problem is that his classes are often to large so you never really get to talk to him really only ask questions. But he is still a incredible teacher.
I love Hank Smith, he is bae. If you are his kid reading this, I hope you know that I am jealous and wish Hank was my dad.
His lectures are funny and spiritual at the same time. His review slides are crucial!! so go to class to get them. I've taken him 3 times and am doing it again next semester haha because he is that good!!
His lectures are seriously so entertaining! He is literally the funniest and you think class is going great until the tests... all the material on the tests you basically teach yourself. He teaches so well, just not necessarily what you will be tested on. The review slides are CRUCIAL. Go to class to make sure you don't miss those.
I have never wrote a review before but Hank Smith deserves it. I wouldn't say this is a very easy show up and get an A class if you don't study. His lectures are literally amazing though. I've never had a professor inspire me as much as he has in a religion class and thats worth any amount of studying required for the class. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Brother Smith is really fun, but he structures some of his classes around his jokes. There are some good lessons and teachings in some of his classes, but it takes a while to get there. His tests are pretty hard. This is not the religion class you take for an easy A. You have to study for it and do well on the exams.
The amount of jokes this man made is literally copious. Every class I was dead from laughing while still learning more about my Savior and feeling closer to him. Definitely shows how you can grow closer to God in a comedy environment. Definitely take this class
Very engaging. He did get off topic often, but it was to answer questions asked by people in the class. Make sure to take pictures of the review slides. My main gripe with this class is that his TA's graded incredibly slow. I know there are a lot of students but after the last day of class I still had probably 20 ungraded assignments.
There are 2 exams and one final which are a decent portion of your grade, but he provides review slide and basically tells you exactly what kind of things will be on the test. It is a pretty easy class with not much homework. Attendance is also a huge part of the grade, and you need to attend to get lecture slides. The professor was amazing!
Hank teaches by humor. This approach usually doesn't work in my opinion but hank pulled it off by very clearly outlining course content, I was never surprised by the test questions and tests were easy if you put in the work, it was hard to do really bad, plus we had extra credit if you were struggling, He really does care and rewards hard work
Very fun and engaging in class however gets off topic very easily so if you want a serious professor, go somewhere else. He will entertain you in class and give you all the answers to his exams as well but you are able to have spiritual experiences in class if you pay attention and participate.
He isn't the teacher for everyone, but I enjoyed his class. He does get easily sidetracked, and even though he says, "if you come to class, you'll do well on the exams," I still had to study a bunch to do good. There are a few exams, a paper/project that was fun, and weekly journal entries. Overall learned and stretched my knowledge!
Gret guy gives good feedback, actually reads the homework
You think you know the scriptures until you take a class from Bro Smith. You can see how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares. I left class knowing 4x as much about the Book of Mormon and with a testimony 4x as strong. He's also hilarious and will never make a class boring. He made the scriptures real-life applicable and more realistic.
I loved this class. Brother Smith is like one of the voices in my head come to life. If you want a serious professor or can't take a joke, find a different professor. Brother Smith is amazing. I left the class with a much greater knowledge and understanding of the New Testament. He spoke in a language I could understand.
The only reason I received an A- and not an A is because I turned in too many assignments late. Late work is docked, but the workload isn't big at all. Journal entry and a 3 question weekly review due every week. You will have to study for tests, but Brother Smith is very good at reviewing, and there will always be an opportunity to make up points.
Brother Smith's class has been one of my favorite religion classes! He made the New Testament really come alive and has a passion for what he teaches. He is hilarious and doesn't really have a filter- so if you're not a fan of that for a religion class, I would pick someone else. He is seriously so awesome! 10/10 recommend
Was not a fan of this class, he makes this class so much harder than it has to be. The tests are in the testing center and if you miss a class period you don't get the study material. Attendance is also MANDATORY, there is a QR code he puts on the screen everyday. There is also a journal you have to do every week. He is cool but the class is not.
It was an easy A, but for a New Testament class, it was focused very minimally on Christ's gospel.
Hank is hilarious! His lectures are so enteraining, but they have nothing to do with exam questions. He gives you all the information you need to get an A on every exam, but the questions are dumb. His tests are purely memorization of random facts. He's such an amazing guy though and I loved attending his class regardless!
I cannot recommend him enough. If his name does not already persuade you to take his class, then his knowledge and how he structures the class will. The syllabus looks stiff, but it loosely resembles the class. Every lecture is engaging and amusing. He makes sure that every student has a chance to do well in his classes. I highly encourage it!
bro smith is legit so good. i loved his teaching style and how he incorporates humor, but he balances it out very well with the spirit
Brother Smith is one of my favorite religion professors. He cares a lot, is spiritual, is funny, and you learn a ton from his classes. This class was reasonably easy and my testimony grew substantially this semester. Cannot recommend him enough.
Bro. Smith is amazing. He starts class by asking if we had any questions before diving into what we need to know. He is genuinely so caring and wants to get to know you. He shines the light of Christ in his class. His comedy isn't half bad either. He really prepared me for my mission, take the class from him.
I've taken two of his classes, and they were great. His classes are fun to go to because he makes each lecture fun and engaging. He says that the purpose of his class is to gain knowledge because that's what he can test you on, but i think my testimony has grown the most from his two classes than any other class ive taken here at BYU.
I CANNOT RECOMMEND BROTHER SMITH HIGHLY ENOUGH!! I now have such a greater understanding and love for both the Savior and the New Testament. If you attend class and really study (honestly memorize) his review slides, his tests are fine and hw is basically reading scriptures, journaling, and one paper. I will be taking another class from him!!
LOVED HIM!! Seriously an amazing professor and takes great interest in his students. If you dont keep up with the reading you can fall behind. Tests were a little difficult but he gives you very clear study questions so definitely manageable. Take this class from him!
Bro. Smith is great. Easy professor with few assignments- 1 big paper that was for your testimony & growth. He does talk a lot, sometimes about off-topic questions, but he tries to answer everyone's gospel-related questions because he cares very much for students' comprehension/understanding. He teaches fast & with humor.
Incredible lectures, absolutely hilarious and spiritual at the same time. He is extremely clear about what will be on the test (review slides). Attendance is graded, and critical to doing well on the tests. All course questions go to your TA, but he will happily discuss any gospel or personal questions. There is some homework, but it's easy.
As someone who struggles with solemn sappy crying emotional religion teachers (no offense), Hank Smith was a godsend (literally lol). 1/2 the class was him answering questions about ANYTHING which was very helpful. He can get a lil adhd but gives all the info for exams and is super entertaining to listen to. Don't take if you are easily offended:)
The Legend of Professor Hank Smith: Listen close, and hear the tale, Of Hank Smith, whose brilliance will not fail. His jokes ring out like silver bells, Each one a charm where knowledge dwells. A mentor, a guide, a beacon rare, Inspires and teaches beyond compare. Students leave wiser, their spirits bright, Forever changed by Hank's shining light.
Not only is Brother Smith HILARIOUS, but he has a satisfying answer for almost any gospel question you can ask him. He's so good at making confusing scriptures easy to understand. His teaching style isn't for everyone, especially if you're easily offended by his jokes, but I loved his class. Get an early start on the final paper.
I would never take a religion class from anyone but Bro Smith. He is so funny, and makes lectures always super engaging. He also has infinite knowledge on everything and is always willing to answer questions. Tests can be tough, but he gives you every answer to study beforehand. Only real assignment is one big paper at the end of the semester.
I liked the lighthearted atmosphere, but I struggled with the lack of structure and clarity. At times, it felt more like an open Q&A than a guided course.
Brother Smith is the absolute best religion professor. He spends the beginning of class answering any and all gospel questions, and his method of teaching is super engaging, funny, authentic, and refreshing. He tells great stories and jokes around a lot (so don't take his class if you can't take a joke). I learned so much about the Book of Mormon.
Yes there are a lot of times you hear stories, hear answers to questions, and laugh a lot but he tells you this is going to be the case at the beginning of class! So worth it so hear his insights and feel uplifted after his class. I've learned a lot, because he wants to help you in your own life. He also is so willing to help you get a good grade.
Hank Smith is a very hilarious guy and tells a lot of jokes and stories. He also has a Q&A session in the beginning of the class and I've learned so much from that even if it means we don't make it to the actual content of the lesson. You'll definitely learn something from the class but it may or may not be about the BOM.
Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Hank Smith. The greatest to ever do it. I will be naming my firstborn son Hank after my experience in Univ 101. I will also be writing Hank Smith on every electoral ballot I receive in the mail from this point forward. This university, state, and country would FLOURISH under his leadership. Life CHANGING class.
I truly had a great experience with Bro. Smith. He starts every lecture with questions from the class and makes an effort to answer as many as he can. He was super funny but also knew when to be serious. If you ever take a class from him, ask him about the Cactus Story!
Stop scrolling through Rate My Professor at 2 a.m. trying to decide whether to take this class. TAKE THE CLASS! Brother Smith is AMAZING. Half the time I wasn't sure if I was in a real lecture or an improv show. Best class ever! If you want a professor who's funny, understanding, and legitimately cares, this is your sign. Would love to take again!
Just being in the pure presence of this wonderful specimen has altered the trajectory of my life forever. My entire posterity will be blessed with the stories of Hank Robert Smith. You will never find a better professor at any other university on this planet. Some might even say he is the GOAT. I love this guy! Ask about the cactus story…;)
Hank is one of the strongest reasons that I literally came back to the church this semester. If you have left and want to come back and aren't sure how, take his class. He teaches in such a wonderfully non-judgemental way.
Brother Smith is an amazing teacher! His tests are challenging, and your grade relies heavily on them, so be sure to study. He provides review slides that cover the material you'll be tested on, so if you prepare, you'll do fine. He also strengthened my testimony and tells great stories to keep the class engaging!
I am infinitely grateful for the semester I spent with Hank Smith. God bless this wonderful man. If he was my dad, I would be so proud. Man, I wish he was my dad. He is hilarious, goofy, and so incredibly fun but also has the strongest testimony and loves his family, this Gospel, and his students so deeply. And he's a fantastic therapist! Take him!
He's hilarious and outgoing. And his lectures are christ-centered, they are inspirational. He encourages us to ask him questions that we have while we read the docturine we study in class.
I really like how Bro Smith interacts with his students and his passion for them and the course but I felt that he did not prepare us for the tests well.
He doesn't teach at all. He's a funny guy but it's not worth it because you don't learn much from his classes. He spends majority of the class period answering questions which could be helpful but its mostly only applicable to the person who had the question. He gives a review slide at the end of class which is what you need to study on your own.
He's hilarious and spends the first half of class answering students' questions. He also gives a review slide at the beginning of class that makes it easy to know what you need to know for the exams since he won't test you on something that isn't on the review slides.
