What Students Say
“Do not take this class if you are looking for a normal writing class, Professor Ashley managed to make a writing class into a political class, it seemed like every other day she was bringing up Biden or Trump, she also forced a book about lesbian lovers into her curriculum which was incredibly graphic, her grading is incredibly bipolar and unfair”

hate isnt the word

she hates the world, so guess what, your in the world so that means she hates you
Ok, she did teach me useful information but it was through the hard way of learning. Let's just say there are plenty of other teachers at WCU that teach writing, you should definately take them over Hanna!!!
boooo awful

I'll be honest..I don't know what everyone else is talking about. She was EASY and yeah she is kinda werid but an easy grader! So If you have her and didn't go to class yet...don't go dropping her just yet...b/c she isnt bad at all. I got a B+.
she is a good teacher. She is very bright, and simply has high expectations for her students. That's not mean, that's life. If you want to learn, and like to write take her!
im not sure what these people are talking about, this lady is true b**ch. are you a guy? yea you fail, end of story
Hannah is an easy teacher. I have her for an 8am MWF. She is boring tho. Her assignments are easy. But they also are pointless. I liked her class because i like writing, and no im not a dork or anything. She is kinda wierd tho.
I dont know what to do for this lady. She sucks..she comes straight out in class and tells you your paper sucks..embarrasing...I hated her...take someone else..
At times she wasn't bad but for the most part I didn't like her. I have done fine in writing my whole life until now. I would def. take some one else especially if you are a guy.
i didnt like her either, she doesnt like guys and she makes you feel dumb when she grades your papers.
UGH, SUBJECT MATTER OF CLASS WAS O.K. GROUP WORK/FEEDBACK WAS OK, READINGS IN CLASS WERE ENJOYABLE. AS OTHERS HAD SAID, I GOT THE VIBE THAT SHE HAD SOMETHING AGAINST MALES, WHICH TURNED HER OFF TO ME AS SOON AS I REALIZED. THIS WAS UNFORTUNATE...
horrible

Not sure what everyone is complaining about. If you work hard and don't slack off you will do fine in her class. She treats everyone equally.
She goves over the stupidest things...basics that everyone has learned. If you haven't learned them, then you need her.
I thought she was great. I never got the impression that she doesn't like males-I don't know what everyone is talking about. She was a fair grader and always availble to answer any questions you have. I had her for a 3hr. class and we were always done by 6. I would definitely recommend her.
Dont waste your time with this women. She would be better suited preaching at a gay rights rally than teaching. The course is structured around readings on welfare recipients..i have yet to figure out the relevance of this to the course. Take her only if you like listening to whining liberal profs.
She was a very easy teacher..u had to have been straight up dumb if u could not get at least a A- in her class..all u dumb ass boys r jus mad cuz u used her sexuality as an excuse for ur dumbness.. to anyone else..i highly recommend her!!!
She is great teacher because she really cares about all of her students doing well. She always makes time to meet outside of class to talk about our questions or assignments. She gives positive feedback which is encouraging
Awe I feel bad that she got a sad face! I thought she was extremely helpful and really cared about her students doing well in her class. At least skim the readings, but most of the readings she chooses are interesting anyway and you wont mind them. Just do your work and go to class and you'll be fine. I thought she was great!
If your a good looking man like myself...your screwed!!!
amazing. truly. if you like to be able to think for yourself and be unique and creative and just have fun with your work this is the prof for you! take her, if you miss out you will truly be sorry.
She is an APA FREAK haha.. she is a pretty good teacher a little tight sometimes but very good you cant fail unless you use loop holes a lot or try to weasel yourself out of work. you do a lot of critiquing of peers in this class also a lot of drafts. you may find your self using the writing center as well
Pretty easy class...she can get a little annoyed at times but overall she is very helpful...if you have questions about assignments she will always answer them whether it is through email or during office hours...she will tear your papers apart but will still give you a B or more on them...if you do your work on time you should get at least a B
Very energetic. Class was not so bad, it was a reasearch class but she made it fun for us to get involeved. Try to choose something you are interested in, if not it can get a little boring.
She's very helpful and energetic; makes the class a little fun. But, grades hard.
NOT A SUCH GOOD PROFESSOR. she is okay! but grades so unfairly!. Never had grades done on time, she leaves you wondering how you are doing in her class. Takes like 3 weeks to grade 2 papers, and so unorganized. I think the public document is a waste of time!
NOT SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR! grades absolutely hard and so unfair! Takes too long in grading papers, at least 2 weeks for just 3 papers!. horrible i rather write a paper then get involved and produce documents. thought this class was going to be better than i thought. although quizees were fair if you read, pretty easy. She just grades HARD
GRADES VERY HARD, but she lets you rewrite if you want. She lets classes create their own rubrics but then grades extremely conservatively. I thought I got an A on the first paper (which she took a month to return) and I got a B-. Classes were semi-interesting and you do a lot of partner and group work. She's nice, but I wouldn't recommend her.
Amazing teacher. Definitely take her class. It is challenging but you will learn so much.
Hannah is kind of hard to follow and understand sometimes, but she means well and is always willing to help out anyone who needs help with her projects.
Avoid her at all costs. If she doesn't agree with your ideas 100% she will not back them, no matter how important they are to you. She is very cold and does not know how to appropriately explain herself without being abrasive and standoffish. Don't expect to have an easy or enjoyable time in her classroom.
Class was okay. She makes you create your own rubric for grading but modifies it in her own way so it's unclear what she wants. Only assigned one official paper all semester. Assigns many readings. If you want a class where you have to wing it, take her ! Grading wasn't terrible.. I wouldn't recommend her overall.
Difficult grader. Puts off the impression that she is cool and nice.. but shes not. She can be very rude and snobby. Half the time I had no idea what she was talking about in class. The books are hard to read. They make no sense and are boring. I did just as well on the quizzes when I did read than when I didnt. I wouldnt recommend taking her.
She is very confusing about her expectations for projects/papers, and expects the class to come up with its own rubric. However, she pads your grade with weekly 5 point quizzes that are pretty easy and lets you redo certain assignments.
Hannah is a laid back person, but she's very confusing when explaining assignments so its unclear what she wants. She is a tough grader when it comes to papers, but the good thing about that is she lets you rewrite usually if you need to and is always willing to set up meetings with students for extra help. Not a bad class but i wouldn't take again
Dr. Ashley is nice, but her class is confusing. You end up making your own rubrics and the directions are never clear. She assigns a lot of confusing and boring readings and you have to relate to them in your essays.
She's really nice and very chill, but grades pretty harshly. Not a lot of reading at all and we only wrote like three papers during the semesters. The papers weren't even long either, like 7 pages tops
Very confusing professor when she describes what she wants in your paper and projects. Says one thing but then wants another. Would not take her again.
The course is overall easy content by Dr. Ashley makes her expectations way too confusing. There is no specific grading criteria for what she wants and asks the class to create their own rubric for papers which makes it even harder to know what she wants. Her lectures are all over the place. Easy class but Dr. Ashley complicates it. DO NOT TAKE HER
You only have three papers through out the semester which is nice. She makes her own rubrics which can be confusing and not very clear. She is very willing to help if you ask. Skipping class can leave you behind. Peer editing is a large part of the class. I would take her class again.
She's really confusing. You'll learn some stuff about writing and she tries to make it semi interesting. I probably wouldn't take her again.
I think she teaches writing fine. You learn to give and receive feedback properly which was good. "Textbook use" if you consider having to purchase and read a novel. No actual textbooks however. She was incredibly politically biased to the point where she assigned us a paper about her political ideology and tried to mask it as something else.
She was a pretty tough teacher. You will have a lot of busy work - and I mean a lot. You have paper after paper in this class. What she wants from those papers was kind of confusing sometimes. Though the class work wasnt great, she was an overall good person and I liked her classes.
Do not take this class if you are looking for a normal writing class, Professor Ashley managed to make a writing class into a political class, it seemed like every other day she was bringing up Biden or Trump, she also forced a book about lesbian lovers into her curriculum which was incredibly graphic, her grading is incredibly bipolar and unfair.
This is the most essay-heavy class I have ever taken. She assigns multiple essays over the year, and most of them are 1000+ words. We wrote a memoir, analysis, and 3 theory of writing papers, which vary in length but use the same prompt each time. If you are not good at writing, this class will be pretty hard, but it can really help you improve.
There are a ton of papers due for this class. I have done about 6, and sometimes you would have 2 due at once. She is a very tough grader, but if you listen to what she wants on the paper and not just write, you'll be fine.
Intro course shouldn't be one. But Hannah is amazing, open note open book and gives a lot of days off. Remember what you've learned, you may have to apply it later in the class. Confusing structure but she takes feedback really well. She is def someone you want in your corner.
She teaches this course as a 400 level instead of a 100 level, you can tell that she have favorites and doesnt like majority of class
Hannahs' class was difficult, but not impossible. If you make the effort, attend every class, and listen to her tips, you should get an A. There is a LOT of papers and work, but she gives you a sufficient amount of time to complete them. Although you may not like how much work she gives, it works and you understand the point of the assignments.
This teacher is so politically biased. She picks favorites. She tries and seeks out you political view in the beginning of the semester and grades you based on your answer I would not take this course again as she treats it like a higher class than it actually is and grades beyond hard!
she sucks, she assigns multiple essays at once. her rubrics are very unclear and easily get confused because of the amount of papers.
Does not communicate well, hard to understand assignments, bad D2L page
Communication with Hannah matters- show up, be involved, show that you care to the best of your ability. It's not so much about doing things right, rather displaying clear and serious effort. It's a college level course with a professor who definitely understands college isn't always meant to be so serious, but you do still have to learn.
You would expect a professor thats been teaching for years would know how to teach, but she does not at all. I'm begging you guys to not take this class. So much group work and peer reviews. The peer reviews never help and she's too much of a strict grader for this course.
In the beginning, her class seems daunting, but as long as you show up and do the assignments well, you should receive a good grade. Her goal is to make you a better writer, and there is one major paper that is 60% of your grade, but she splits it into small parts, making it very reasonable. She is very understanding and gives good feedback
Hannah is a good professor and a nice person in my experience with her, the only thing I disliked about her course was the sloppy, unclear rubrics. One of the rubrics was student made for an assignment that was worth 30% of the grade, and extremely unclear. Other than that, just put effort into the course and you will do just fine.
Professor Ashley has a good personality, sure, but from a teaching standpoint, I wish I dropped the course when I had the chance. "Tough grader" just doesn't hit what Professor Ashley is. She is overly anal about everything you turn in, you must hope you 4x check over everything before you hand it in or you will receive passive aggressive feedback.
Very tough grader. be sure to triple and quadruple check what you've written before you submit it. She gives 10-12 pages of reading per night. The book that she uses to frame effective research writing is extremely confusing and doesn't make sense at all. Grading rubrics very unclear and confusing. Allows students to create rubric for rough draft.
Wish I would've dropped this course when I could. Worst professor ever. Her feedback for papers is super passive aggressive when it comes to papers and I hope this lady never teaches again.
Hannah's teaching style is one that works for all students regardless of how they learn: her class is varied between presentations and short writing pieces, and she grades INSANELY fairly and is always willing to discuss possibly changing a grade. She's super easy to talk to, and always willing to help :)
Hannah is a fantastic professor who genuinely takes care of her students. While the material feels dense due to the level of the class, she ensures everyone understands it and feels comfortable discussing theories.
I took Dr. Ashley for one of my English seminars (Literature and Storytelling in the Age of the Climate Crisis) and had a truly transformative experience. She creates such a supportive space and is committed to her students actually gaining something from her classes, not just completing assignments. She's always willing to help, so reach out!
She is very stubborn when it comes to submission material, for example she wants a specific type of screenshot for an assignment and if you dont have it you'll get nothing.
only had one huge 18 page paper for the whole semester but it was the absolute worst. she practically taught it as if it was a level 400 class & got frustrated & yelled at the class when no one would participate but would ignore students who actively had their hands up. The paper was confusing she meshed multiple different genres & it made no sense
Assigned way more work than needed. She was very nice but was doin way too much
Honesty, don't take any of her classes. Literally you might like her at first, but their's better professors out there that would actually make you want to learn. Hannah just throw things at you and you just have to understand it. Every bad review about her is true. She's nice at first, but is passive aggressive, save yourself.
Loved this class. had the right amount of work not too much not too little and she is not a tough grader. gives extra credit opportunitys answers emails efficiently. and cancels class sometimes on Fridays which worked for me cause I work.
I LOVE Dr. Ashley and this class. I could not recommend her enough — such a great teacher who truly cares about her students' well-being. She also cares so much about her work; it is so inspirational. She does not get enough credit for all the work she does to make this world a better place. I will be taking another class she teaches next semester
One of the worst professors I've had
Dr. Ashley is awesome. If you're at all interested in having a professor that keeps things interesting, inspiring, and motivating, take her class!!!! All of the assigned readings are fascinating and will fire you up especially if you like organizing. She values attendance and participation bc she values her students voice/ presence
hannah was amazing in this course. she inspired me and made me look at things in a different perspective. the course was very easy to navigate and she wants everyone to pass! i took it for a gen ed requirement but recommend it for those who need the requirement.
