GREAT CLASS! GREAT TEACHER! Not a lot of work but you learn a lot.
she's really nice, and makes it history pretty easy to understand and pay attention to. took attendance in discussion but not lecture. really helpful if you just ask. a 1/2 page reaction paper due every week, 2 3 page papers, 2 essay exams. not too bad considering it's history. she doesn't assign a lot of unnecessary work, and you actually learn.
Great teacher - makes it storylike. MUST BUY VOICES BOOKS. Other text is optional. Learned a lot in her class. Nice and very willing to help. If you follow the writing guide you will do well. Gives four test essay questions in advance then chooses two on the day of the test. Easy class BUT you learn a LOT!
Easy class, but sooo repetitive. Come to class, listen to lecture, leave...over and over again. Discussions were interesting enough, we actually got to participate. She doesn't seem to know the material all too well, has a hard time answering questions. Attendance isn't mandatory, take it if you need an A and a 4-credit class.
She is very nice and a pretty easy grader. You only need to come to the small group meetings and there are only a handful of grades. Definitely take if you want a good grade.
I enjoyed this class. It was hard to capture all of American history in one semester, but she did a solid job of it. She is very enthusiastic and genuinely nice. I emailed questions and she replied within hours. 8am lectures are hard to sit through...2 papers, 2 tests (final and midterm)--Not bad at all. Her TA Trevor was cool too.
Well as others may claim she is really good I beg to differ. Her discussions are fun and I get really into them. My only problem is the rest of the grades. All your grades are in essay format and she grades your english more then your knowledge of the subject. I've gotten a C purely on writing errors.
2 paper, 2 tests, and participation grade...all worth 20% of your grade. Papers are easy, tests are easy, everything about it is easy. Her lectures are SOOO boring. Discussion is fun and itnresting. Trevor, her TA, is awesome and always willing to help. Email them and they will get back quick. Write well and you get an A. Take her
This professor was good. I didn't know that I was so into history until I heard HER lectures. She puts enthusiasm and common logic and humor into the lecture. The class was easy enough, too. She gets an A in my book.
AMAZING TEACHER!!! Her class is discussion format and you get a daily participation grade, but seriously talk and you get your A for the day. She is so knowledgeable and interesting. Willing to work with you and help. LOVE HER!!!!
Easy grader, easy class. Just come to class every day and join in on the discussion for an A. Three papers, all under ten pages, two exams. If you are willing to take the time to read what you are assigned, this class will be a breeze.
This class could not get easier. She gives you all the IDs and Essays for the mid-term and final over a week in advance and she gives you the two paper topics at the beginning of the sem. Her lectures can get boring but discussions are always fun and if you say something then you get credit! Highly recommend!
She is a great teacher. I like he lectures because you can tell she is enthusiastic about what she is saying and she talks about things in a way that everyone can understand. The midterm and final are easy because she gives you the questions ahead of time. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
Very Easy! two papers and two tests. You don't even have to go to the lectures to do well in the class. I just read the book and got a B+ in the class.
Easiest GHIST teacher at JMU. Attended maybe 10 classes all semester. Talk during discussion groups, write your essays with clarity and purpose(proofread many times) and memorize the study guide before tests. Got an A with practically bare effort in her class.
ANGEL. her lectures are interesting, she loves everything she talks about. only 2 papers and 2 essays, and a weekly discussion. readings are easy and not time consuming. plus- she is adorable!
I think she's an awesome! Everyone should take her class if giving the opporunity!!
Love her! She is good at what she does and keeps me interested! I strongly suggest you go to her lectures, you'll learn a lot! She's not a tough grader, take her if you can!
Pretty solid professor, lectures can be a bit boring but i mean it is history not the most exciting subject, definitely take her if you want a good professor, she knows her stuff and is extremely nice, the exams and papers are pretty much laid out for you, overall I'd recommend it, easy 4 credit class
really nice lady. go to lecture, you wont want to but it'll really help your grade. a little picky with papers but exteremely doable. buy the optional textbook (America: A Narrative History)...it'll help A LOT with paper writing.
2 papers, midterm and a final with easy participation credit for discussion. fair class considering its 4 credits. lectures are boring but she tells you everything that will be on the tests so you don't necessarily have to go to every one. she's clearly passionate for the subject, i suggest taking her
not a hard class, thought grading was unfair and very subjective, and based on opinion since the tests are not multiple choice..dont need to go to class , you can find all info online or textbooks since she gives u "possible" test questions and then choses a few of them. VERY boring lectures, low voice and a lota info you prob learned already in HS
She is a great professor. All of the lectures cover the material that she wants to see on the essays and on the tests
Though I've only been at JMU for one semester, easily my favorite teacher. Extremely kind, helpful, and the class really isn't hard. She gives you the midterm and the final one week prior to the test, you literally have the test. If you mess up it's your own fault, I don't understand why anyone would give her a bad review.
Hannah is a great gal. Although lecture is tedious, she makes it bearable with her exemplary knowledge of history. The mid term and final are your only tests, and are extremely doable. I averaged B+'s on both of them with just an hour of studying the night before. Have a couple writing assignments + mandatory discussion period (not bad). Easy A-
Kelley is a wonderful teacher. She is very friendly and willing to help us out. There are 2 creative writings, 1 midterm and 1 final. The midterm was tough: 25 MC and 10 T/F and you have to prepare 6 essays (she will pick 1 for the test). It's time-consuming but it's doable.
She is so sweet! She's always willing to help you or go over something again. There's a lot of information and the midterm was kinda hard, but overall I'd definitely recommend taking her! A midterm, final, and 2 writing assignments, plus your discussion class make up your grade.
Love her!! Definitely take her class.
Tedious class. LOTS of information. she puts the slides on blackboard for studying. Really nice person and her graduate assistant is nice too. Everyone is split up into 4 groups and has discussions on monday or wednesday to talk about the readings in Voices. Study hard, pay attention, go ask them to look over your papers!
Great teacher! Lots of info, so pay close attention in class.
Dr Kelley is a wonderful teacher. There's A LOT of information so you MUST attend class and take thorough notes. But if you study, the tests aren't hard and neither are the critical writings
Very nice professor, discussions are pretty dumb but make up 10% of your grade. Lots of information on tests. Grade is 2 tests, 2 papers (graded very harshly), and discussion. Not awful, but I would find another professor if possible
Loved this class! Great lectures, and she puts the powerpoints on Blackboard.
Prof. Kelley is a great professor. PowerPoints are online but it isn't torture to go to class to get some context. 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. Don't miss a discussion class (it'll lower your grade substantially). She is really an interesting teacher and it's a fairly easy B, and not at all hard to get an A with some effort.
Go to lectures! She doesn't post anything online. 2 short 3-5 pages essay and footnotes is only needed in the 2nd paper. Participation is crucial during discussion. Not a tough grader and definitely one of the sweetest professors.
Attendance to the discussion class is mandatory, required to speak atleast 3 times if you want an a for discussion. Lectures are a bit long, but give all necessary info for the 3 creative writing essays you have to do. She welcomes questions during her lectures for those that have them. Replies to emails quickly, and is extremely helpful.
The class honestly reminds me of high school. She lectures throughout the class and you just have to talk during your discussion section. The papers are creative style, but she grades pretty tough. The subjects aren't boring even for someone who doesn't like history. Very general, nothing too deep. Attendance mandatory only for discussion
Okay so here is the thing, there is absolutely no reason to be doing creative writing in a 200 level history class. That is absurd. I got an A on my midterm and final and 100s in all discussions and ended with a B bc of creative writing assignments. Sweet woman but is incredibly boring. High school- like course. Don't recommend.
By far my favorite teacher. I don't even like History but she made it really interesting. You have two creative writing essays that she tells you about in the beginning of the year so you have plenty of time to do it. Go to her to revise it before you turn it in, she's really helpful. Only tests you have are a midterm and a final. Go to discussion
Took this in an online 4 week class and she seemed ok. It was really just a lot readings and papers. She was responsive when emailed and gave feedback on papers. Fair grader and getting an A in her class is possible if you listen to her comments. Very much creative writing format though...
She grades pretty tough on the papers you write. You have to come to the discussion portion of the class. Overall the class is one where you will probably get a B no matter how hard you work.
She's amazing, the way she teaches not so much. But compared to every other HIST225 class, her is definitely the one I'd take. Papers are creative essays but only 3-5 pages, be creative and go to her and you'll do fine. Doesn't post lectures, gotta show up for class, but she makes it worth it. 2 papers, midterm, final, discussion grade.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kelley's class! Even as an 8am it was something had no trouble making myself get up and go to. 2 creative writing pieces with very clear rubrics online, a midterm, and a final. The Discussion portion of the class was extremely informal and was based on books, not lectures. Super easy, Very interesting class!
Hannah Kelley is a fantastic professor! She really loves history and shows that in her lectures, informal discussions, two 3-5 page essays, two exams, and two movies. She always comes to class extremely enthusiastic to teach and makes everything so interesting to learn - you will never get bored in her class! TAKE HER!
Professor Kelley is really great- she really knows what she's talking about and you know she cares about what you're learning. She doesn't take attendance but she also doesn't put any notes online. Be sure to read for discussion. She is very clear about what will be on the tests- the day before she goes over the whole study guide. Would take again!
She does have a discussion class that you will need two of the textbooks for, but her class was a breeze for me. She had two papers, a midterm, and a final.
Solid choice! Definitely attend class because she doesn't post the lectures on Canvas. Participate in discussions. Active participation can help your grade and she's very fair. It can get boring sometimes, but she makes an 8 AM worth attending.
Hannah's class is super laid back. You have a discussion section, and you have to go to that in order to get a good grade. She doesn't require lecture, but if you don't go, you won't have the info you need to do well on the exams. She has review days before every tests, and there are two papers that are pretty simple. You HAVE to study.
Misleading and poor communication skills between the professor and GA, leading to unclear and unfair grading. Gave a rubric to the class titled, "How to get an A" for an essay, followed the rubric and got a C.
Her class is super laid back, you just have to participate in discussion. Her exams are easy if you study some and pay attention and just go to class. I went to her office hours before the final and I think it helps a lot if you get to know her.
Professor Kelley is awesome! She is very enthusiastic in her lectures. You have 2 papers and 2 exams. She grades pretty harshly on the papers, but her TA is not so bad. The exams are easy as long as you study. You also have a discussion section which is 15% of your final grade and is super easy as long as you talk.
Hannah's teaching style is auditory via stories. You have to speak 3 times per discussion as its 15% of your grade. The 2 papers are graded harshly. One of my papers was 5 pages, with 3 grammar mistakes and no content mistakes. She dropped my grade to a B+. Test is 20 MC questions covering 15+ stories and a full blow essay (not short answer).
Prof Kelley is a fiery red head who knows her stuff. She is very sweet, intelligent, and understanding. She gives great lectures but doesn't post her powerpoints online, and since there is no textbook-- a "non-mandatory" class is very mandatory. Her only downfall is that there are only 4 grades in the semester: 2 papers and 2 tests. I do recommend!
I honestly have to say that I have super mixed feelings about Prof. Kelley. Her lectures were incredible and kept me intrigued the entire class, but no matter how hard I studied, nor how extensively I took notes, I really did not do well on the tests. She knows her stuff though, and is a very understanding lady! Just pay close attention.
Participation in discussion session HIGHLY MATTERS! What a boring class I had to take! The Essay paper topics were so Difficult, might seem easy but IS NOT!!
She's fantastic. Lectures are interesting and she tells you exactly what she wants in your papers in order to get an A if you go to her office hours. Gives you a study guide for your midterm and the final is literally your midterm with a few questions from after Spring Break. She's sweet and cancelled class quite a bit which was nice. TAKE HER!
Professor Kelley was hard. The papers weren't to bad and participation for the discussion was easy but the midterm and final might've been the hardest tests i've taken and that's saying something. They go so much further in depth then expected even with a study guide. expect to take at least 3 pages of notes per class. cancels and ends early often.
Prof. Kelly is a good choice. Only 4 assignments all year. 2 papers and 2 tests (a midterm and a final). Lectures are not online so you have to go to class. If you just pay attention should be easy for you as the tests are mostly multiple choice and a few short answers straight from class.
Professor Kelley is not a bad professor, although there are only 4 grades the entire semester- 2 papers, a midterm and a final. She's a pretty harsh grader and will take points off for small mistakes. Her lectures are pretty fast pace and it's a lot of notes every class. If you skip more than 1 class you probably won't pass.
Loved her! She's so sweet and the class wasn't very difficult. Participation is given for a grade so make a few comments each class and you'll be fine.
She is one of the sweetest professors I think I've ever had here. There is a lot of reading required for the discussion portion of this class, but it's completely manageable. There are 2 papers and 2 tests, which aren't bad at all.
Professor Kelley is the absolute best professor I have had at JMU! She is so sweet and genuinely cares for ALL of her students and she is so approachable and understanding about everything. Discussion class you only have to show up and its only once a week so its not bad at all and though she doesn't take attendance, she will reward you for going!!
there are only 4 grades for the whole semester but she is a great teacher- I hate history and didn't hate this class
Professor Kelley is so sweet, I would definitely take her again! Doesn't take attendance but MUST go to class because you don't use a textbook for info, just the lectures so you HAVE to take notes. Cancels quite a bit! Make sure to go to class the lecture before a test, she gives extra credit! Very understanding & not difficult if you just try!!
No textbook, GO TO CLASS THOUGH. Her presentations are solid and she does review classes before exams that basically give out answers on the exam and study guides. I didnt talk once in discussion classes and still received an A on that part. Only downfall is your grades is based on the exam and two papers and discussion so put in the work.
Professor Kelley is the best history 225 teacher! I was susceptible about taking this class because I suck at history, but it's literally like an elementary history class. Attendance isn't mandatory, however, you need to show up to do well on tests/papers. She also cancels class often, HIGHLY recommend!
Kelley is an amazing professor! I always looked forward to her lectures because the material was always very interesting. Theres two papers, a midterm, and a final. Participation and attendance in the discussion session count, but not in the lecture. I definitely recommend taking her class for Gen-Ed credit!
Dr. Kelley helped make thing less stressful with all of the online/covid stuff. Her lectures were quick and straight to the point and there wasn't a ton of work required outside of class. There's a lot of information over the semester but as long as you take good notes and study you'll do well on the 2 exams and 2 papers! Highly recommend
Professor Kelley was an amazing professor and the way she taught with passion made lectures very interesting and I actually enjoyed class. 1 midterm and 1 final. 2 essays.
Professor Kelley is really passionate about history and made it more interesting for me. Discussions were pretty easy but always show up to those in order to get an easy A and even say a little something. the lectures were good , just powerpoints and sometimes we watch history videos. She lets us our early a lot or would cancel class. Super sweet.
I LOVED taking Prof Kelley's class. She's super sweet and she cancels class a lot. She is so understanding too she let me take my midterm 3 weeks later. If you take the class make sure you go to the lectures though because she doesn't post notes. Take the class!!
Professor Kelley was so sweet. She canceled lectures a lot. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but she doesn't post the notes online. There are 2 tests and they are worth a large part of your grade. We had discussion once a week that was mandatory to attend and was graded based on how often you give your opinion.
Professor Kelly is very kind and also pretty easy with grading. Her exams are some of the easiest you will take and she doesnt assign much work. Definitely one of the better History professors. She doesnt post slides so go to class. Make sure to go to discussions to. Youll get at least a B if you barely try.
Professor Kelley is probably one of the best choices for HIST225 given It is a gen ed she doesnt assign much work and the class is a mc/2 short answer mid term, 2 essay final, and 2 out of class writing assignments. She doesnt post the PowerPoints so go to class or get the notes. She is very understanding and gives out good discussion grades.
Hannah Kelley keeps history interesting because she tells it like a story. It's not like your normal history class where the teacher just sits and reads off the powerpoint. She really keeps you engaged and you can tell she wants what is best for her students. She's awesome, 10/10 recommend!
Professor Kelly is amazing, such a sweet lady and she does a great job at explaining all the historical events you will cover in the semester. You get a participation grade from the discussion which are mandatory. There's two essay and a midterm and a final which are essays as well.
she is a great professor. she explains the material well and lecturers aren't boring. there are discussions with this class that are mandatory to get credit for participation. there are two papers. For the mid-term and final exams, you are to answer two prompts. I definitely recommend taking this class.
I love professor kelley. she is so sweet and welcoming. Her class is so easy. You have 2 written assignments, a midterm and final. both the midterm and final are essay based meaning she gives you 2 prompts and you have to write an essay for them. Really easy because she gives you the prompts ahead of the tests for you to prepare. 100000% reccomend.
My favorite teacher I've had. She is so nice and the class is super easy. Few essays and a midterm and final but they are both mini essays and she gives you the questions beforehand to prepare. She talks the whole class very clearly and tries to keep it interesting. I LOVE HER SO MUCH PLS TAKE HER
Prof Kelley was the best history teacher I have ever had. She is very knowledgable about what she teaches and is very clear on everything. We had 1 quiz, 2 essays, a midterm, and a final (both mini essays) all year so strive to do well on them since there aren't many grades. Absolutely loved her and her class
Decent professor. Wasn't great but wasn't terrible. Cancels lecture a lot. Also, you don't have a lot of grades so you need to do well on all assignments. She is really sweet though. She also has the best outfits.
Love her! The discussion class is short and she cancel it and lecture a lot. There are not many assignments so you have to make sure you do good on there. There are 2 essays, a midterm, and final. The essay have a very clear rubric of what to include so its easy to get at least a B on it. Also gives the prompts for the midterm and final to prepare.
shes super nice! weekly discussions, but she cancels a lot, and they are short if you do have it. sometimes forgets about the quizes every other week. only graded by the quizes, midterm, final, and two papers, so do well. take notes (more than just what is on the board to do very well), because those are very helpful when doing the essays!
Grade was based on two papers, 3 quizzes, a midterm and a final. She posts the prompts for them about a week or two in advance and if you follow the rubrics for the papers it's not too bad. The quizzes were based entirely on what she says in class, but as long as you take decent notes and go to class she's easy, but can be hard to reach by email.
Dr. Martin-Kelley is a great choice for an easy gen ed. It's history, there's bound to be reading and writing, that's just how it is. The final and midterm were both handwritten essays that weren't hard at all if you took notes/paid attention in class. Lectures are good, with mandatory discussions. It's US history, been learning it since 6th grade.
First semester as a transfer, Loved this class! You have 2 Papers and some quizzes. Overall, just show up to class listen to lectures you will do great.
Very knowledgeable and speaks with great passion. This class is super easy. I had a couple friends who skipped nearly every class and still ended with a B. I only attended the lectures because I am very interested in History and she is a great teacher. Exams are 2 short response questions, there's no homework, discussions periods are helpful.
Professor Kelley is super sweet and knowledgable about history. There's a good amount of reading for the discussion section but the discussions are pretty chill. There are 2 creative writing papers and the midterm and final are short essay responses. Slides are online, but she elaborates & explains things more in class which helps a lot.
She is such an understanding and easy-going professor. Cancels class if we need more time on essays/to study and gives amazing feedback so you can improve. I have learned so much. 2 papers and 1 essay test. Show up to the discussion and you will receive the credit.
Prof. Kelley was awesome! Attendance is not mandatory, but the slides that she posts are not very thorough so I do recommend that you go in person. There is a separate discussion meeting that you will have to go to discuss the book readings that you are assigned, and those can be a bit annoying at times but it's not difficult. Lectures are fun!
HIST 225. I went to the lecture 3 times and still passed the class with an A. You are only graded on discussion attendance/participation, as well as only two essays and the final and midterm. She is so sweet and honestly just the cutest thing ever. She is passionate about what she does, and the lectures I did go to were always about 45 minutes.
My opinion, she's the best 225 professor. It's hard getting to know a teacher if it's a lecture class, but I can still tell how caring she is. If anyone went up to her at the start or end of class with a question (about the lecture, essays, etc.), she was always welcoming. She's well prepared for lectures too and doesn't read off slides.
She is great. Her lectures are very interesting as she is so knowledgable in her field. Attendance isn't mandatory but the slides she posts are very minimal so I would recommend going. The discussions each week are kind of boring, but it's easy to do well. There are 2 creatively written papers as well. Pretty easy for a 4 credit class. Take her!
Very sweet prof, took HIST 225 for a gen ed and was an easy A! 3 missed classes is an automatic zero tho, so attendance does matter.
Dr. Martin-Kelley is an amazing professor who is so easy to understand. She grades pretty easy for the most part but make sure you dive deep enough into all your topics in the 2 essays in the semester. There is a separate discussion that attendance is mandatory but it's only an hour and once a week.
Dr. Marti-K is an amazing professor. She is so easy to understand but make sure you really focus in on the details of whatever you're talking about in your two essays for the semester because she does really want you to get detailed on it. Also, discussion is mandatory but it's only once a week for 50 minutes.
She was such a sweet professor. This class has a discussion portion to go along with the lecture; attendance is mandatory for that, but the lecture was not. if you go to class, she will give the answers she wants on the essay questions on the test. You will have a midterm and final with two papers. And you have to read a book for the discussion.
Very few grades in the grade book. 2 essays, 2 quizzes, 2 online at home exams. Very fast-paced lectures & it's hard to keep up. Don't get the optional 3rd textbook u will never use it. Weekly discussion, easy but can be painful if you're with a group that won't talk. Professor Martin-Kelley is very sweet but a little harsh when grading the papers.
She's honestly an icon. Lectures are long but you honestly don't really need to take many notes because she posts the slides. Discussion is easy but attendance is mandatory (she does not hesitate to fail people if they miss the 3 classes allowed). Exams are pretty easy, she gives written questions to you in advance.
I really like history as a subject, so this course was a breeze for me. The discussions section was also interesting as it engaged you on reading primary sources regarding the foundation of America.
Lecture is not mandatory as she does not take attendance at all, however if you miss them your grade will suffer as the slides she posts have little to no information. Weekly discussion which does have attendance, so make sure you go (it's not hard just boring). She is very nice and cares a lot about her students.
Super nice and very accommodating professor. She made the class way more enjoyable and was willing to help. There's a couple of online quizzes, a midterm, a final, and two papers, but make sure you go to the discussion sections, you're graded on your notes and attendance and it's a huge part of your grade. Overall, really positive class experience.
Professor Martin-Kelley is a great storyteller and makes lectures very engaging. While lecture attendance is not mandatory she does not post her slides so you should make sure you are going. All the answers for the tests/essays can be found in your lecture notes. If there is a day you are watching a documentary she will cancel class!
