Nice prof but no better than the textbook. Lots of reading. Lectures lack clear structure and definitions and their content barely overlaps with the reading. 2 midterms and cumulative final covering lecture and reading content (no study guide) (60 qs in 65 min). A lot of memorization with no clear indication of what info is important in particular.
Hannah is by far the worst professor at UCSC. She doesn't care about her students and is extremely unforgiving when it comes to class. I don't know why she felt there needed to be two midterms and a CUMULATIVE final during online school. The class avg for the first midterm was 77, what a joke. By far the laziest teaching effort I've seen in a while
Although Professor Raila tries her best to make lectures engaging, I find it unreasonable to complete 2 midterms (60 questions each) in 60 mins. The timing on the midterms don't even allow you to go back to questions you are confused about. If you want to pass the midterms and the cumulative final you better memorize the entire textbook lol.
Her psychology class is the hardest course I've never take in high school. We need to read 15 chapters in this course, and each course have over 20 passages(over 300 articles can you believe that?). What's worst, all test questions are all made by her and you can not even search them on google. I don't believe it is an intro class.
So much reading 40+ chapters a week with homework too, and the midterms are even worse cause you have to remember every single thing that you read in those chapters.
Professor Raila is new, but still, it wasn't fair that we had 65 minutes to answer 65 questions on the midterms. The hw were ZAPS, which were pretty easy, just a few questions. The inquizitives on the other hand were time consuming. She also expects you to read a lot fyi. Not a hard class, but also not the easiest. Wouldn't be considered "intro."
I absolutely loved prof. Raila's class. Psych 1 is a hard class with a lot of work regardless of the prof, and I felt that her class was manageable, super interesting, and well taught. All the tests were open book open note, and not super hard though some people struggled with finishing in time. She is so sweet and nice. Great class! Great prof!
Lectures are badly structured; reading the book is a must to complete the homework and to do well on the exams, which fortunately were open book. However, there was 65 questions to complete in 65 minutes (ridiculous). I can tell she's enthusiastic about teaching, but she needs to have more realistic standards for her students.
I do understand that this is her first time teaching as a professor, along with her being new to UCSC. But the amount of reading we needed to do was overwhelming. It's hard enough to figure out what she wanted, along with where we as a class were heading towards. For an intro class, she overloaded us big time.
Professor Raila is an awesome professor. I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures as they were interesting and engaging! The class is very textbook heavy, but I actually liked the textbook as it was very interactive and up-to-date. >5% of my final grade came from extra credit. Some people had issues w/timing but if you took AP psych you will be fine!
I really enjoyed this class and ended up learning a lot from it. However, the textbook really sucks, and we were expected to know a LOT of information for each test. I remember the first midterm had seven chapters on it, and each chapter has around 60-70 terms on average. I'd recommend this class if you have good study habits, otherwise, avoid it.
I think there were a lot of first years that complained a lot in the class, but I think the class was just a typical college class. Test and textbook heavy with 65 questions in 70 minutes for all 3 tests. The questions themselves werent difficult and its pretty manageable to figure out answers since its open book. Lectures were interesting.
I understand why many people complain regarding the timing of the exams, but I found them manageable. If you do what you are supposed to do, you should expect a very high grade in this class. Overall, this class was amazing, and I learned lots of new things.
I hate lots of reading but you dont actually have to read all of the book to excel just take notes on bolded vocab. Easy assignments, 1 super easy paper, & 3 tests make up the grade. People complain about 65q in 65 min but 5 are ex cred AND its open book/note. SO much extra credit overall (up to 5%) which is crazy!! Pretty easy A!
Prof. Raila was the BEST. I genuinely looked forward to lectures (my roommate would sometimes watch with me just cause they were so interesting) and you'll learn a ton. Tests are hard, so you definitely have to study, but if you put in the work you'll be fine. She's super nice, one of my favorite classes so far.
So much reading and the tests are really difficult cause it covers too many different topics.
PSYC170 with raila was one of my fav courses! i think past bad ratings were b/c PSYC 1 consists of a lot of freshmen who aren't used to college-level courses. anyway, her lectures were so engaging! she's also very kind and understanding. her exams and pop quizzes were super reflective of the content and not tough as long as you pay attention!
In my entire experience at UCSC, Hannah has probably been one of my favorite professors. She is very organized, engages with students, and actually cares for your learning. She does give out a lot of readings and pop quizzes but they're easy if you at least browsed the readings. She makes sure to keep you on track if you fall behind.
I found the class to be interesting and highly informative. The lectures were well structured, and I appreciate the obvious effort she put in. That being said, she is not an accommodating professor. If you anticipate needing some sort of accommodation (like extensions, or absences), she is not for you.
A fun person, I took her during her first quarter at ucsc and she was very organized. There's lots of content to cover but she tries her best to help you remember it. The TAs were so nice, this was a very interesting class. Just be prepared to put in the work bc it is an intro class.
Professor Raila is a challenging professor, however, as long as you review the material and make use of the resources she and her TAs provide, this class is definitely passable. ATTEND THE REVIEW SESSIONS. They're free study guides. And review the lectures before the tests because she can get really specific with lecture-related questions.
quizzes consist a lot of information and you only have 60 mins for about 55 to 60 questions. make sure to attend review sessions for 1% on quizzes
She is a great choice if you LOVE psychology, but you definitely have to have a determined mindset and study for tests she gives if you want to get a good grade. Very nice person overall, loved taking this class.
It's true when she says her class is challenging, but it's definitely manageable! This is a class you really need to put effort into. Tests are 1 minute a question but possible if you really study. She is a very sweet professor, and I learned a lot from her class. I definitely recommend her for psychology 1!
professor hannah raila was great ! theres a lot of reading involved but if youre reading the textbook and watching the lectures , you should be able to get an easy A. :)
I think that professor Raila was a great teacher! as long as you do the readings and take good notes, you're set up for success. she's super sweet and really cares about your success.
Professor Raila is amazing, her class is so fun and interesting because you get to try different clinical techniques on each other. Her lectures are information heavy but very easy to follow. She has a few homeworks but they are very easy and sometimes a pop quiz at the start of class. Although the class sounds hard, it really isnt and is very fun
Raila is a fantastic professor with a very dynamic background in both research and clinical work. The lectures are fantastic and the grading criteria was clear. The readings were very interesting and I did not have trouble staying engaged in her class. BEWARE of pop quizzes! The test was not hard, and the essay was easy. 10/10
She explains the assignments and due dates in a clear, organized way. She prefaces the class by explaining that the course is difficult, and to be prepared. The workload is completing online textbook readings and quizzes each week, plus lectures, midterms, and 500w papers. Her lectures are very engaging and memorable, cited studies are interesting!
Professor Raila is passionate about psychology. Her lectures are very engaging. The class is hard, but she makes it known throughout the quarter that her class is intended to be difficult. Work and quizzes are online, which is pretty easy. There's lots of reading. There are 2 research papers and midterms you need to do. The final is cumulative.
I enjoyed this class and as long as you have time to do the reading (its quite a bit of reading) and attend lecture you will get a good grade. However, she breezed through topics and left some questions unanswered. I felt like just as I was understanding a topic she moved on which made me less engaged in the class.
Professor Raila was fantastic. Her midterms can be challenging, but that is because the class is supposed to be challenging. The lectures were always interesting, especially when we talked about OCD, since that is what she does her study work on. During the quarter she talked about careers in psychology multiple times. Overall great experience.
Very easy class overall, you only have to read the textbook and do activities that are graded for participation. Then the tests are all multiple choice and the two papers are relatively easy and short. It is a lot of reading but if you do that and show up to lecture it will be no problem, and the lectures are very interesting and engaging!
She's really nice and it's clear she really knows what she's talking about. The lectures were structured well and she answered any questions we had. The only thing that slightly bothered me is how quickly she talks during lecture, but she posts the lecture slides after class so it's easy to catch up.
Incredibly clear lectures! Textbook was very interesting and among the most digestible textbooks i've ever read. Learned many interesting topics. She is simply a kind and well-spoken prof and I honestly can't see how anyone has anything negative to say about her, unless they got a bad grade in her class. there is a final paper + final exam
I have a couple issues with Professor Ralia. Although she is very well informed and a good lecturer, but I simply cannot agree with the way she structures her class. Your grade is solely based on 3 pop quizzes, a miderm, final, and paper. Not to mention she makes sure to cram everything into those two exams she gives. Very unrealistic and annoying
Don't recommend her if you aren't a good test taker. Your grade it based on 2 exams, and occasional pop quizzes. She gives you 4 minutes at the very beginning of class to complete the quiz on paper and if you're late you only have the remaining time. She doesn't care if your bus was late which happened to a lot of students. Not accommodating.
Prof Raila could care less about her students' success. Extra credit was only given when she tried to coax us into giving her a good review for sets. She recommended 15+ hours of studying for one exam with no concrete material of what exam questions were. She consistently left us in suspense during the entire quarter which is not very nice!
Raila is extremely industry-minded. Her lectures exclusively quoted the DSM as though it was the Bible in church. Her tests and pop quizzes were needlessly difficult, and you can't get them back to review. She is helpful insofar as you can see how career psychiatrists dissociate from society and dehumanize people. Take another professor if you can.
Although I like the subject, Professor Raila made it very hard to enjoy this class. The class is graded by very few things: reading quizzes, exams, and a paper. I can tell she's knowledgeable and passionate, but she comes off cold and almost uncaring about one's learning and enjoyment. My advice is to keep up on the reading as it's your whole grade
Clearly Prof. Raila is very knowledgable about clinical psychology. Despite this, she did not share this knowledge in a way that felt enjoyable or accessible. Admittedly the material is difficult, but she did not do a whole lot to make it any less difficult. Save yourself the trouble, take psyc170 and psyc167 with Andrea Cook instead.
Dr. Raila is knowledgeable, but her course layout is not organized at all. It's all over the place. She grades based on participation, and seems cold and disconnected. She doesn't give ANY makeup options, so if you screw up once, you don't get a second chance. I'd just go with another professor.
Raila's class was my favorite I've taken at UCSC. She's super smart and helpful. Has high expectations for her students, but makes that clear from the start. If you want to learn a lot, take it from her. If you want an easy quarter, maybe take it with someone else. She'll always hang back after class and chat with students for a while. Super fun.
This teacher is not goad stay away absolutely mean and unprofessional
Professor Raila is a tough grader and very unaccommodating. She does 5 pop quizzes throughout the quarter and only drops one of them. No midterm, but the final paper is graded very tough! + final exam is very lecture heavy, confusing to know what will be on exam since she doesn't really give you any context of what topics will be on exam.
Good professor. Class was extremely hard but she warned since the beginning. Will definitively fail the class if you don't study a lot but she gives you the resources you need and makes the lectures interesting. Lectures were never boring. Take lots of notes in order to pass class. Does curve tests.
Professor Raila was very cold especially when I emailed her under unforeseen circumstances due to the strike. Additionally, her exams are tough compared to Intro to Biology class.
Great lecturer, horrible class structure. You're graded by 5 pop quizzes based on readings that can make or break your grade. It is also very difficult to recover your grade as there are little to no opportunities to do so. For a professor that preaches about grad school, makes it extremely difficult to pass with a good grade. Wouldn't recommend.
she was extremely unaccommodating and seems to not care about her students. graded by 4 pop quizzes on the readings that account for 1/4 of your grade with no make-ups. throughout all of the strikes and uncertainty she didn't make anything easier, and instead tried to help by giving 'extra credit' worth 0.08 of a point.
Loved taking Intro to Psych with Raila. Lectures are amazing even though it's a huge class. She does fun in class experiments and I was never bored. It's a tough class, lots of science, more like a bio class for difficulty, but made me want to be a psych major. Take it if you're thinking of doing a psych major
She lacks empathy and understanding when it comes to students missing class/quizzes, being late, or needing extensions. Her pop quizzes are weighted so oddly with the overall grade, and even if you do well on everything else but bomb the pop quizzes, you're essentially screwed. SO much reading in such little time, good lectures but bad execution.
Graded papers harshly without a clear rubric, tests were very detailed but cumulative so couldn't just focus on one chapter. Lectures aren't required but are extremely helpful
Never understood how psychology teachers can preach about managing anxiety and stress then do everything in their power to make you anxious and stressed! She seems to be cold and lacks empathy which is confusing being that she used to be a therapist. Entertaining lectures, terrible class structure. Would try to avoid her courses id possible.
This class destroyed my passion for psych, it was too much content for ten weeks. I got a B but I feel like I walk away no better than how I walked into class. There were 2 mid-terms,2 research papers, 15 long chapters, 15-chapter quizzes and not enough time to fully understand it all. She was cool but it was just too much to do in such short time.
Professor Ralia is very passionate and a good at lecturing. I wish her tests were not based on anything and everything from the textbook, readings and lecture. She should have condensed it more. Additionally she is cold and unsympathetic seemingly viewing people's mental health issues as a case study instead of a real life person.
As a freshmen psyc major taking her class. She hasn't given me a warm welcome into the field. Long tests and the textbook is information heavy. She doesn't really care if you pass or fail and she leaves everything outside of her lectures to her T/As, office hours are over zoom as well. Save yourself the stress and pick literally any other prof
Very engaging and interesting lectures!
Her whole thing is the class is made to be hard, enough said.
I wish I would've read rate my professor first. As someone wanting to major in psych, Raila was pretty discouraging. LOTS of reading. Emphasizes from the first day that she expects the class to be difficult. 2 midterms, 1 final, 2 papers. 2-3 weekly readings. Tests are super application based, without being taught how to actually apply the info.
I wish I liked this class because the content and lectures are interesting. I'm a 4th yr bio major taking this so I can go to grad school, and among all of my upper divs somehow this class was the most stressful & time consuming. There is SO much content and you're tested on the entire textbook. She also comes off as really cold and uncaring.
Lots of reading in the textbook. She gives extra credit for attending zoom's held by the TA's and sometimes EC questions on the exams. 2 Midterms, 1 Final and 2 Research Papers. Raila explains at the beginning of the quarter that this class was going to be difficult. Lots of content for a Psych 1 class but I did learn a lot.
Textbook heavy and has two in-person midterms. She uses all of the reading (abt 14 hours a week) on the exams and lectures. Her lectures can be interesting depending on the topic that is being discussed. The final was 60 multiple choice and hand-wirtten APA format research essay. Definitely try not to take her class if there are other options.
Very fun and engaging lectures even in a big class, not too much reading and not too much homework
The lectures are just out of the book but she definitely prepares you for the tests. Extra credit is available and she's very kind, especially if you reach out outside of class.
Beware. if you're looking for an easy GE, this is not the most ideal one. many hours of reading per week (2-3 chapters with 20+ lessons each). the content is very dense and can be overwhelming. the lectures are very important to know for the midterms, which are about 50 multiple choice. you also have 2 papers to write + 2 midterms and a final.
Hannah is a great professor! Her lectures are really fun and entertaining. Be ready to read a lot! Usually its a chapter for each class plus an online assignment, and those chapters take 4 to 6 hours to read. I really liked the course, it was interesting but just too much reading and too little time. Her midterms are really hard so prepare!
Redoing homework assignments and making flashcards for vocab terms is a good way to prepare yourself for her exams. Lecture isn't mandatory, but classes aren't recorded and exams have a lot of questions tied to what the professor talks about in lecture. Don't take the class looking for an easy GE, there are easier options.
Fun lectures, teaching style straight forward and easy to understand. Homework takes about 1-2 hours per week, heavy reading which may take 3-4 hours a week. Easily comprehendible midterm/final questions. You will get an A if you read the textbook and take notes. Lots of EC that can really boost your grade!
Professor Raila is an incredibly smart professor and interesting lecturer. You must be willing to put in the time to read the textbook, (a few hours per textbook chapter) take detailed notes in lectures, and attend every extra credit opportunity available. If you are well-studied and prepared, you can pass this class and succeed.
If you can avoid her, do it!!!
Professor Raila is a really knowledgeable professor and you can tell she genuinely wants her students to learn and is supportive. Although there is quite a bit of reading, it's fairly simple and the tests aren't bad. She makes lectures interesting and is very well spoken and engaging. As long as you put in some effort, you'll be fine!
Prof Raila was super engaging in lectures, and I loved how she found ways to encourage participation even in a huge lecture hall. She warns you that it's a hard class from day one, so if you don't receive the grade you want, it is entirely on you. Read the textbook, you will not do well if you don't. Stay on top of SONA activities too!
Besides the fact that Professor Raila wouldn't round my 89.9% in her class at the end of the quarter…she is a great teacher! Very clear and entraining lectures (so fun I even took my mom to one not kidding!). And if you miss one it's pretty easy to just make up for it through text book reading. Tests are hard but straightforward no surprises.
She doesn't give you a study guide or a general overview on what the tests will be on, so you have to pray that you remember all 2000+ words. Very application based. TA zoom study sessions are not useful. There is no discussion. Extra credit assignments are 1 or 2 points which is nothing now in days. I learned more off the textbook then lectures.
Lectures were very interesting, never dreaded going to her class. Definitely not an easy class (which she is very upfront about). Focus mainly on vocab when reading textbook, most of the writing in them is not important for the tests. Midterms/final are multiple choice + super easy if you take notes. Two research papers, but they're very short.
This teacher has a punishment vibe. Her lectures can come across as stigmatizing. She values cbt a lot. Has a narrow perspective on psychology in my opinion.
Vague feedback and confusing grading process. She doesn't explain why she gives you the grade she did and it feels rushed/ un-thorough.
I really liked Prof Raila. I understand why some people dislike her, she isn't very flexible but it's because she cares about the course content and wants everyone to be an active participant in the course. She was always willing to chat after class about anything. If you go to lecture and do the reading, you'll be okay.
Prof. Raila is a good professor, though I think her grading could be more fair. For PSYC 100, I'm not sure why she has a midterm and final exam for it worth 20% each (which are hard) when the final project is the main point of the class. She explains things concisely, which is nice. Sections felt unorganized. Would take again, but not for PSYC 100.
Took w25. Pop quizzes based on reading that were difficult to pass, even though I always read the textbook chapter. Midterm and finals scores were shockingly low, with the final having a class average of 75% and no curve. Her tests are very detailed, so get ready to write down every detail in the textbook. doesn't give clear grading criteria.
Raila holds very high expectations. Random pop quizzes (5 percent grade each) are peppered in. Theres no extra credit assignments at all. Tests are hard and theres no study support from her, doesn't like to curve grades either. Not being rude, but i'm telling it how it is. You also need to buy a textbook, which is dumb. Beware! Won't take again!
The professor and TAs didn't communicate. It felt like a lot of hand-holding to appear supportive, but then the approach would shift to being very strict. The assignments were very disorganized, but the lectures were fine, although not particularly engaging. Read for pop quizzes. Good luck with this professor, you need it.
Good lecturer + makes it clear on the 1st day how high her standards are. However, for a core class as important as PSYC 100 (which is known to be hard and involves a lot of content), she leaves little room for mistakes. Unless everything is PERFECT, you'll get by with a B at best. No study guides for exams & few final paper examples to refer to.
The professor was unprofessional and wasn't caring. Assigned random pop quizzes throughout the quarter (one before the midterm). Did not know how her tests were going to be as she didn't assign study guides (student made). She provides little/no rubric instruction for research essay. She seems to not care for her students, didn't show for exams.
I don't know why Professor Railia gets lower reviews. Sure, the pop quizzes are annoying, but I find that those who complain about it are the ones that are more too lazy to show up to class. She is also one of the best lecturers I have ever had. My only gripe with the class was disorganization of the rubric for the final project.
I've had this professor twice now and all these 4 ratings are either lying or its the professor making them. TAs basically lead the whole class. Pop Quizzes are unfair. No exceptions even if you have a job or emergencies. Likes to brag about Yale and expects ivy-level performance. Not approachable or kind; once said “it's a free country” to me.
no communication b/w professors and TA's, as others have said. your TA basically is the reason why you either do well or badly in the class, she doesn't have a crazy hand in it. not accommodating and uneccessarily difficult test questions, enough so that even the TAs had to check the answer key to know what the answer was when i asked about them.
Knowledgable prof, but she barely teaches you about the group project worth almost half your grade in the class. Regurgitates the textbook and has pop quizzes on it. Grading criteria is last minute. Would not recommend this class with her.
She would give us random pop quizzes like this: cameras on, screen shared, and would make us put our hands up as we are reading the questions and answers off her screen, then give us 5 seconds to click the answer on Canvas. Not normal behavior, way too extra. She was also not an understanding professor at all.
Hannah is a good lecturer, yes. But for exams made everyone put 10 FINGERS in the air, giving us ~50 seconds to read the question and 5-10 seconds to answer. Super non-accommodating, random pop quizzes at the beginning of a 9am class, and expectations are set too high for students. Lectures are interesting and engaging, but everything else is bad.
This professor thinks she's above actual teaching. She over generalizes and seems to get pleasure from people failing the quizzes. I wish she would read research about learning
