You only have three grades, three tests. Test questions are pulled from lecture, textbook readings, 2 outside readings a week, and one to two podcasts a week. NO study guide for the tests. The average grade on the first test was a C+ and she does not plan on curving it. Very nice and good teacher, but the class is way to hard for a mandatory class.
If you're only taking SOCY101 as an elective or just to get the credit for your major, I would recommend taking a different professor. She's great if you're a SOCY major or want to learn very in-depth about sociology. But this class was a lot harder than it needed to be for a SOCY101 course. Podcasts and readings every week that are on the exams.
She is a great professor and even better person. Is willing to meet with students whenever and helps however shes can. Good class
Doesn't take attendance ever, but it is hard to keep up with the material if you frequently don't show up. She is a very sweet lady and her lectures are relatively interesting, but the tests are probably harder than necessary for a 101 class. There is no homework so you are graded solely on 3 tests.
She is the sweetest lady you'll ever meet, very bubbly and loves her job. However, this was my hardest class. I'm friends with a group of girls in this class & we are ALL struggling to pass. Your grade is only based on exams, which are nearly impossible to do well on. It's way too hard for a 101 class & no matter how much I study, I don't do well.
She is a very sweet lady but the class is extremely hard... You have two exams, a final and thats your grade. class lectures, weekly reading and podcasts are all on the test. shes very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, if youre not a sociology major i would definitely take another professor!
Hanne is super nice and willing to take the entire lecture to talk with you to make sure she's understood. That being said, some of the lectures can drag on. Many of her test questions come directly from the podcasts and articles, and if you didn't skim them at least, you would be lost. I got an A and two Bs on the test, so its doable.
Hanne is a very nice woman and does care about her students but her class is much too difficult for a 101 class. Way too much reading and podcasts. Show up to every lecture and you will still know almost nothing on the exams. Only 3 grades: 2 tests and the final.
She originally only intended to give us 3 exams to make up our entire grade, but then we were doing so badly that she gave us optional homework to replace one exam. She's a very nice and caring person but this class was way too much for a 100 level elective. My final grade was an 89.6 and she wouldn't even round it up so I can say goodbye to my 4.0
I had to drop this class, it was made way harder than it had to be. Tests were based on lectures, podcasts, and articles. She's honestly a really sweet and caring professor but this class was way to hard to be a 100 level survey class.
This class has been the most difficult 100 level course I have taken yet. She makes the weekly tests impossible, they are cumulative and you only get 1.5 minutes per question and you cant go back. Homeworks are like online quizzes and you cant see your score until the assignment is closed. She makes it way harder than any other socy101 class.
I took this class online. She's a super nice person, you can tell from the online lectures. That being said, this class is honestly the most work of any 100 level class. Chapter readings, many articles, 3-8 lecture videos that are 10+ mins long, etc. Not an easy A by any means. I would have rather taken the class in person.
1 participation assignment, 1 homework and 1 test due every week. LOTS of reading and podcasts you have to listen to. It can be time-consuming. Questions can be confusing. Average of 5 lecture videos with every module. She cares about her students and gives you extra credit opportunities. She makes it easy to understand though. I recommend her.
She was very thorough and posted to BB multiple times a week to update the class. Had easy discussions once a week and then had to respond. The tests every week were all on quizlet. The final was NOT on quizlet so prepare for that but by far one of the easiest classes and nicest professors
hardest 100 level class. this class should not be this hard. my 500 level investments class is easier. nice prof but so so hard DO NOT TAKE HER
Her class was my favorite class and I genuinely enjoyed taking the class! She has a variety of learning materials that ranged from news articles to podcasts and recorded lectures. If you read the assigned textbook and actually listen to the recorded lectures and podcasts you should be fine in this class. Do the assigned work cause it adds up!
I love Hanne. Like so much. For asynchronous online 101 you have about 5 lecture videos that are between 5-15 minutes, a podcast, and a textbook chapter or other reading. Tests and HW are super easy if you even skim. She cares about everyone so much and is very accessible and knowledgeable. Can do all the work for the week in 3ish hours. TAKE HER!!
Do not take this course with her. This is an introductory sociology class, and it is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. She assigns hours upon hours worth of work only to give you the most difficult and detail oriented test every week. Her class has truly made me hate school and now I know I never want to be involved with Sociology.
This class was not difficult at all! She is super sweet and thorough. There is a lot of course work, but she is very well organized and everything is due at the same time each week so you get in a routine and its not hard to remember when things are due. As long as you stay on top of your work youll be fine! 10/10 recommend.
She is a good person at heart, but her tests are extremely hard even though her tests are open notes, questions are not in the notes most of the time. The homework is easy and sometimes fun but that really is the only thing that helped me not fail the whole class. She offered us extra credit on the final test though.
I absolutely love Hanne, she is a wonderful and caring person. The textbook and podcasts can help with homework and tests. The tests are kinda difficult but it helps to review old quizzes and familiarize yourself with concepts and the ending findings of experiments. The lectures are essential to passing so make sure you listen to them as well.
I absolutely loved Mrs. Van Der Iest! She was the most organized and caring professor I have had so far. She is very clear on due dates and sends reminders throughout the week. As long as you stay organized youll be fine. Theres a module each week with a homework assignment due on Fridays and a small test each Sunday but they are all open note!
Professor van der Iest was honestly so amazing. The content of the class is extremely interesting and the readings she assigns are a breeze. She's organized and very easy to reach out to. Not hard to pass the class if you keep up with due dates and the readings.
She is a very caring person and wants everyone to well! However, each week there is heavy amount of information and quiz and tests. It is open note throughout the year but it is a lot of information at one time.
Had her for soc 101. The tests are so difficult in this class. There is a test every single day. The material is too hard for a 100 level course. My graduate-level classes are easier than this one. I might have to retake this class. Don't do it!!!
I loved Professor van der lest! I took sociology 101 in the summer, online, and asynchronous in 3 weeks. She assigns a decent amount of readings, but I enjoyed her lectures and the assignments were not too hard. She cares about her students and I would definitely take her class again! Also, there weren't any papers.
At the beginning of the semester, some of the test questions didn't seem to match up with what we were learning, but Hanne listened to students and adjusted the number of questions. She is a very caring teacher and an A is do-able as long as you engage with all of the assigned material and lectures. That being said, it is a lot of material.
This class was awful. One of our modules was estimated almost 8 hours to learn. She acts as if her class is the only one her students are taking. Way too many assignments and tests per week. Plus, half the things on the tests and quizzes are never mentioned in the learning materials. STEER CLEAR if you hate busy work.
I loved Professor van der Iest! I had her this semester for SOCY101 online and she was great! The modules every week can be a lot of material and time consuming, but if you do everything you will do well in this class! I would highly recommend taking her!
Professor van der Iest is the BEST teacher! She put so much work & thought into her online sections to make sure we were engaged & staying on task. She had regular check ins with her students to make sure they were doing well in her class as well as other classes. She uses external sources so it's not all out of a book. She's literally the best!
by now I've taken a couple of online courses and I can really say that this was one of the most well formatted and thoughtfully organized classes I've taken. Sure her questions aren't straight out of the text but if you understand the concepts then you can answer the questions easily. I will say you do need some time management skills to keep up!
Despite the grade I received, I thoroughly enjoyed taking this class. The lectures were always helpful and she never made them boring. However, we basically had to take 2 tests a week which continuously brought my grade down a bunch until it just stayed at a 68%. There are little to no opportunities for extra credit, so get all your work done.
She's probably one of the best professors I've had. I'm retaking SOCY 101 because I received an 86 and I know I could get a higher grade if I actually put in the effort. She is very sweet, her lectures aren't boring and it's honestly an easy A. I didn't get an A because I barely put the effort int her class. She's awesome. You can easily get an A.
Wayyyy to much work for a 101 introductory class. Asks for your feedback and completely disregards it. Lectures are boring. Assigns multiple long readings and podcasts and gives weekly quizzes and tests. Advisors told me that SOCI 101 was supposed to be the easiest class at UofSc, but it is the class that has the most work and most assessments.
This is the best online course I have taken. She is not at all boring, clearly enjoys what she does, and cares about your success. It is asynchronous, but she communicates with us almost excessively. It never feels like you're on your own. It is also incredibly well structured; you know what is expected from you and can easily set a routine.
She's okay. I like her personality, but she assigns waaaay too much for a 101 class. Beware of hour-long videos, podcasts, and readings. My 300 and 400 classes have less homework. The course itself is very organized and the content is fairly easy, she just assigns too much for a 101 class.
I took this class under the impression it would be an easy A, but I've worked harder in this class to obtain an A than my in person classes designated for my major. The lectures are lengthy and the tests are hard. She asks for feedback from the students but then doesn't change anything. DO NOT TAKE.
If you take this class be prepared to have no outside life. You will spend hours a week reading, watching lectures, and taking weekly test, weekly homework, and there are weekly discussion posts. She asks for feedback through surveys and then disregards everyone telling her there is too much work. There are also multiple grammar issues on tests.
I feel iffy about her. This is a 100 level class and I do more work for it than my 300 levels. A podcast and multiple lecture videos along with reading assignments are necessary every week. Most test questions are about the podcast. Asks for opinions and then doesn't change anything, but if you email her she is very friendly and nice.
She is a really kind professor and cares about students learning the material. The class does have weekly assignments to keep up with but they never took more than an hour per week for me and it feels like I got a lot out of a class I had only signed up for to fill out my schedule.
She sends so many emails and the homework/exams seem to get harder every week. Not only does she seem to force her class to be a top priority to you making everything due on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but she also assigns weekly reading/lectures/podcasts that are at least 30 minutes long each. The exam questions are very difficult for no reason.
I really can't stand this class. I feel like the harder I try to improve my grades, the worse I do. She does not explain the material well enough and I have no idea how to answer her exam questions. I am making better grades in biology compared to this class.
Very easy online class. There are two weekly hw assignments and a weekly test. Nearly everything is on quizlet or can be answered by a quick google search. I never spend more than an hour per week on this class. She assigns a lot of podcasts, readings, and lecture videos but they are not required so I never do it and still have a 95 in the class.
Consisted mainly of lecture videos, podcasts, participation assignments, homework, and tests each week. Tests have about 8-12 questions in 30 minutes, while homework is untimed for the same amount of questions. It only seems like a lot of work just because it's online and you actually have watch the lecture videos, but it is not bad at all.
Tests are open book. Its honestly just a read and comprehend kind of class. If you understand the readings and the lectures then you will be fine. This was one of my "relaxing" classes as I spent 3-4 hours per week doing the homework, reading assignments, lectures, and tests.
I love this prof! Weekly there are readings, a podcast, and lecture videos. You are graded on your homework, a quiz, and a class participation assignment per week. Her lecture videos are incredible and I love listening to the case studies depicted in the podcasts. I highly recommend her as a teacher!
Easiest class I've taken in college. Workload is manageable and quizzes were open note. Professor was entertaining and put in effort to connect and check in with students weekly despite the class being mostly asynchronous (due dates every week but no formal meeting times). Highly recommend taking this class it was interesting and helped my GPA.
These reviews really fooled me when I chose to take this class. Every week you will have to watch 4 lectures that can last up to 50 minutes long each(some are shorter than others) and listen to a 50 minute podcast while also reading a whole chapter. Its hours and hours of work for this class. She's a nice lady but I don't recommend.
There was a test every week, 12 multiple choice questions. The tests are timed. A home work assignment that was 9 multiple choice questions. You get 2 chances on the homework. Take really good notes on your computers so you can hit command F. It takes about 5-7 hours a week to complete.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Not only does she give 7 hours of work you have to do to be able to understand the weekly homework and test but she makes her test so unbelievably hard. Even after watching all of the lectures and the readings, she makes the questions so difficult to the point you can hardly even get them right.
Professor Hanne van der lest is an amazing professor; however, there is a lot of work in this course. It requires about 7 hours a week in lecture videos, readings, and TED talks. The homework is easy, but the test is difficult and timed. She does drop lowest HW and test grade which is helpful. She also is very easy to talk to about improving.
If you are considering taking SOCY 101 online with Hanne, DO IT! It is honestly the easiest class you could take for a humanities credit, and it only requires a few hours a week (4-5 tops). Hanne is super sweet and easy to reach if you have any problems.
She's such a sweet lady and does monthly check-ins about how you feel in this course. However, you do have to watch lectures and podcasts for the material. There's weekly hw and quizzes, but questions are found online or mentioned in the lectures. Easy class and gives extra credit work
This was definitely a "chill" class. The content is easy and interesting, Prof. van der Iest is hilarious, and the workload is moderate: some readings, a podcast, lecture videos, homework, a participation assignment, and a test each week. You can knock out each weekly "module" in about 3 hours. Plus, I came out of the class having learned a lot!
Prof Hanne was so sweet and caring about her students! She does give a lot of work and the tests she gives weekly are a bit difficult if you don't complete the work she gives before the test.
This was an online asynchronous class. It does take about 3 hours each week to complete the modules but the homework and tests are all open note and easy. There is a textbook but you dont ever really have to read it. She really cares about students and offers many extra credit opportunities to boost grades. Definitely recommend taking this class!
Literally an angel. Kind of a lot of work each week but the assignments are the same each week and due at the same time. Her lectures are to the point and engaging. She constantly checked in on me throughout the semester and is very understanding. No final and drops lowest HW and exam grade. Plus she gives a bunch of opportunities for extra credit.
She is an awesome professor! She was really caring about my situation this semester and was willing to work with me so that my grades wouldn't slip. In addition, she's very knowledgeable about sociology and she conveys the topics well. 10/10 would take again.
Test and Quiz and discussion every week. Decently easy course and Professor Hanne was nice and easy to work with
Easy online class. One quiz, homework, and discussion due each week but most answers are on quizlet or are common sense so it's not much work. No tests or finals which makes the class an easy A as long as you get the work done.
Take this class for a very easy, yet pretty informative introduction to sociology.
take her online sociology 101 class! She is a great teacher and with a little bit of work each week you'll be set for an A.
I enjoyed this class a lot! There were interesting assignments and the professor is very kind. I loved how much of the class consisted of online lectures and podcasts so I could tan or walk on the treadmill while listening to them; sooooo much better than sitting in a classroom. I would definitely take this class again!!
Definitely take this class online for an easy A. Readings are actually interesting and lectures are pretty short. Exams are very straightforward.
I loved her! This class was online, and while you do have to put time in, it's an easy class to succeed in. Her lectures are to the point, informational, and funny. She's very communicative and overall a great professor!
she is genuinely the best professor I have ever had. I took her class when I was taking 18 total hours actually learned in it. she actually treats her students like people. I mentioned to her that the semester had been hard for me, and without asking, she rounded my 88 to an A. TAKE HER. also- everything is open note, no final. She's the best.
Hanne is such a sweet person and although it was a virtual class, I still felt like I knew her. Her online class is extremely organized and easy to follow. The work is weekly, as long as you stay on top of things it is no problem at all. There is no final exam and no tests. I would definitely take her again.
Took online: Actually learned a lot, course is very organized, easy A. TAKE HER. SHES AWESOME!!!
She is great w/ communication - always sending reminders abt upcoming assignments due. I personally never did but ik of a few ppl who went to online office hours and she was super easy to talk with and was very nice! Workload is consistent. 3 graded assignments each week - HW, discussion platform, and quiz. Opportunity for extra credit too :)
Good professor, was great in teaching us during lecture videos.
Took her online but the class was pretty straightforward and easy. She puts a lot of effort into her lectures and content and seems super nice and caring. There are no big exams and all grading is based on discussions and small quizes.
I loved Hanne!! I found her to be incredibly sweet and caring. I took this class online and missed a deadline due to a hard deadline on a research project outside of school, and Hanne took the initiative to email me and ask if everything was okay. There are a few hours of reading every week, but I wouldn't have wanted to be taught by anybody else.
I literally love her. She grades so fairly, straightforward mini weekly quizzes and homework but all the answers are in the recorded lectures and readings. She is probably the most genuine and caring professor ive had out of all my classes online and in person. The class itself is really interesting and she explains it all in a clear way w examples
Very nice but be aware of the course load every week. There is about 7-8 hours of lectures, readings and podcasts every week that you have to do in order to do the quiz. There is a lockdown quiz every week due on Wednesday and homework/discussion are due Tuesday. She is a very nice lady and cares about us, there is just a lot of time put in.
This is the hardest class of this semester for me and I am in organic chemistry. Van Der Lest's quizzes are so unnecessarily hard for a 101 level Carolina core class. Do not take her if you care about your GPA. She makes the quizzes impossible.
Not a terrible professor, but the course load is ridiculous for a 101 course. This is easily my most time consuming course, and the weekly quizzes are using the most niche information she gave for lectures. Be prepared to spend at least 8 hours a week for this class. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor is very nice and gives extra credit opportunities, but this class was much harder than necessary. Each module's quiz was very difficult, and each module had an insane amount of readings needed to do well on the quizzes. Maybe the in-person version of this class is easier, but online had too many requirements just to get an A.
Very nice professor. However avoid taking this class online! This class was one of the hardest classes of my semester. The amount of information you have to know for this quizzes is wild. She does give extra credit but the quizzes take up majority of your grade and they are not easy at all! I avoid taking this class if you can.
Be wary of taking this course. You have to spend many hours a week studying for the weekly quizzes on lockdown. Questions are vague and are not like questions from the practice exams or homework. Crazy how I am doing better in physics than in this course.
Soo Hanne is a very nice person. I have gone to her office hours before and they are helpful, keeping that in mind....her class is probably one of the hardest sociology classes. You have quizes every week on Respondus. You have to spend hours studying because if you don't, I promise you, you will fail the quizzes. I did enjoy her class though.
Hanne was caring, organized, passionate, and communicated extremely effectively. All of these qualities contributed perfectly to making it as easy as possible to perform well in this online class. It is evident she truly cares for her students and their success. The class was straightforward, I definitely recommend taking if you need a SOCY credit.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. There's a locked down quiz once a week. 12 question exam on numerous topics, so forgetting ANYTHING, you are cooked. I'd study so hard, knowing I was gonna fail. For a 101 class, it's unbelievable I have a better grade in my law class than this one. She wasn't helpful when I begged her for help. DONT TAKE THIS 101 IM WARNING!
THIS IS NOT AN EASY A!!! Please don't take this if you just want to skate by. You need to spend several hours a week watching lectures, skimming the textbook, and listening to the podcasts. If you aren't super motivated this class will eat you alive. You're better off with any other SOCY 101 class besides this one. AVOID!!!
There was definitely a lot of online work to do- 1 hw, 1 discussion post + reply, and 1 LDB quiz each week, along with listening to podcasts and watching lectures, but you just need to set aside maybe 1 day a week and focus on that. Hanne is very accessible outside of class and offers lot of credit! Please don't let other reviews scare you!
Hanne is caring and offers some extra credit. The workload is manageable—about 4 hours a week with one participation task, one quiz that uses LockDown Browser, and one homework assignment. The downside is that the quizzes have only a few questions, so missing one can significantly hurt your grade. Overall, I would take her class again.
