She really does not care about the students.
know how to teach but exams are very hard but still better than other professors
mad hard. gives honors questions. exams contain 5 questions and 200 points. lab notes strict. hard grader. never take. drop it even the money is gone. aite
sucks
Man Don eve take her...
I love the way she teaches, she gives good examples and reviews. However, tests were not easy. If you work really hard, and do the difficult examples in the book (that she probably didnt review in class,) you might get an A. I recommend her only if you are really interested in the class.
she's an evil **** from hellllllll
bad, bad, bad. took class with her, was getting a c, dropped, retook eith different professor - got an a. and she made me feel like a complete idiot, but turns out im not)
do not take this professor. i got a B+ only because i taught it to myself the whole semester. her final was hard and cumalative. plus, she went off the topic alot. i never went to class. no point
She is a devil from hell please run for dear life before its too late. She is always late and hurries through the chapters and expect the students to pass. She designs her tests from A-Z. It seems to me that she is more focused in failing her students that to promote passes.
hot, generous , care for student. i mean organic is hard , u gotta study for it... i love her to death . SHe extrememly funny too.
Horrible, I went to her and asked do she think I should drop the class because her test were extremely hard, she told me no wait til the final that can possibly boost my grade, then she turned ariund and failed me, I could of dropped the class. WHEN U SEE HER NAME ON YOUR SCHEDULE RUNNNNNNNN!!!!!
Hardest organic professor. If you wanna get a decent grade do not take her..
Well as someone else has said Organic Chem is hard regardless of who you take. I personally don't see why all these people are complaining, she's pretty clear in her lectures, but she does always seem to put a surprise question that no one expects in every exam. It's hard, but it's doable.
she is really good, all you have to do is study and then youi will see that your grade are unbelievable. She is better than Watson and Pasternack combined. If yor trying to get into pharmacy, then she is the one u should take. It is very easy to get an A- or even an A. She also goes slow unlike most professors, and lets U sceduale the date for test
She teaches well but her exams reflect nothing she teaches at all. I'm sure at least 50% of her classes get either uw,d, or f's
i really have mixed opinions about this prof. she knows how to teach orgo but her tests r nothing like what she explains. when your in class taking notes u think ok i think i understand but when u see her exams u wanna run away. she gives u weekly quizzes based on the labs n gives partial credit but her exams r ridiculous
why is it that people are still taking this professor even after seeing that her reviews are so poor?? i strongly urge people not to take her. tests are hard, lectures are useless, she stares you down like a hawk during the tests, and so there is no way of doing well in this class. take watson instead.
do you guys know how many lives professor upton is ruining now that she is teaching three sections!! get a W right now dont waste your time and get a uw later on in the semester. you will remember my words and im not the first person to say this.
horrible professor, if you get her switch to another class. she enjoys seeing people fail.. it's her life
She really is not a bad professor. People who complain about Orgo don't really know how to study for it.
her lectures are irrelevant. she tells you one thing is going to be on the exam and gives you totally different stuff (lies about everything!). withdrew from her class with an F. retook it and got an A- with a different professor. you will either fail or UW her class. don't waste your money. no amount of studying will prepare you for her exams
What she tells you during class in regards to the material on the exams and quizes is all false. she will put everything but what she said she would. It's her way of tricking the students. Best bet is to study the whole text including ALL exceptions Very unfair and impolite. Take someone else. Trust me. The good reviews here are written by her.
Dr. Upton is a very helpful professor who understands that most take organic chemistry just to get by. Yet she does her best to help you to get a good grade, if you deserve it. However , I cant stress this enough, you MUST STUDY, no matter what, its orgo we taking about here.
She can teach orgo, but exams will make you fail. Orgo is a very hard subject in the first place but this lady's exam makes life even harder. I don't understand how her lectures are crystal clear but exams are a whole nother story. If you're in pre-pharm...take someone else unless you're obsessed with studying and have no other life.
She is da worst professor ever!! She dont teach, she take off crazy points if u make a little mistake on the test! She comes to every class late!! Dont take her plz!!!! She is horrible
She is the worst professor at Liu. Her lectures is different from her test.she is always late, and she doesn't know how to use her time effective.she skips alot of the topic, yet its on the test.PLEASE DON'T TAKE HER.
Unlike many professors, Upton knows what she's teaching. When asked a question, she answers it. She makes common examples out of the material to help students better understand what she is talking about. She is a hard grader however, when it comes to tests. Her quizzes are easy if you study what she tells you to.
One of the worst professors I have encountered during my time at LIU. Her tests consists of truefalse, multiple choice, and two written problems (you only have to choose one out of the two) - the main issue is she gives very few questions on exams so once you get three questions wrong you automatically get in the 60s-low 70s. Take someone else !
Worst Chemistry professor in LIU! Makes everything more complicated then it has to be. Exams are rough! MANY people dropped the class or barely passed. Do not do not do not take her!!!!
teaches the material and tells you what chapters you need to study. If you study the chapters thoroughly, you will pass. You need to know how to read the chemical formulas from every which angle. Her exams are tricky because she presents the formulas in ways the text book does not. Aside from the textbook, use internet resources to test yourself
Horrible horrible horrible ... Chemistry is hard yes - but this woman is unbearable don't go she's late and has no regards for other people's feelings,time... DONT WALK AWAY RUN!
Can't ask her to explain anything or tell her you don't understand without demoralizing and condescending remarks being thrown at you. She would give you test weeks after finishing sections and being into new material making it hard to focus on new material. I suggest getting tests from another class to prep for the final because hers are no help.
Intro to Organic and biochemistry is tough, but, Professor Upton knows how to explain it very well. She was a wonderful lecturer (paints in color), clear and approachable and doesn't mind taking extra time with you. She is easy going, but her exams are tough (critical thinking), which is great if you are going into Nursing School.
Please DO NOT take her class. 30-45 minute late for each class & make up excuse. During Lecture she is confusing and explains things horribly. In labs she will sit by the door and use her phone. She often make personal phone calls. Her grading are unreasonable. Make grading mistakes and after asking her to fix the grade she would deduct more points
Please please don't take her yes organic chemistry is hard but she makes it impossible to pass
She 's fair. No credit for a wrong answers but gives pts if you are close to the answer. She explains it in an easy way which was good for me because there are chem profs that talk so fast and make things so complicated. If you work hard and study you will be ok.
I just got my first test and expected it to be a bad grade bc of all the stuff written here but it wasn't bad at all. I got an 84/100! Its sad bc I wish had taken her in 121 bc I am learning a lot now.
I am in her class right now. It's an 8am class and she comesin mostly on time. So far I am doing pretty good. I had another professor in 121 but I really didnt learn much.
Multiple choice and True/false exams and one problem you have to work out like the homework. Same formate for the exams. I am getting As and Bs. Will take her in 4x
easy A !! how can you not do well if its multiple choice lol JUST STUDY
Upton is a great professor, easy multiple choice questions and true and false. easy A, deff recommended. drops lowest test grades too!
Professor Upton is amazing. I am taking her in the summer for CHM121. Quizzes are multiple choice. The bad reviews are from students who were either lazy or wanted a grade that they didnt work for. Professor Upton is caring. These reviews are far from true. She is the complete opposite. Go to her office hours for extra help.
she goes thru material pretty fast so I recommend you read the chapters before class. Tests/ quizzes are handwritten and sometimes have mistakes so be sure to ask her if you feel like something is off. She made some mistakes when grading so also don't be afraid to go up to her to point something out because she is understanding and not harsh
HORRIBLE. I was so nice to her and had almost 106 in her class towards the end. CARELESS INDIVIDUAL. I wouldnt call her a professor. I got a B+ when I deserved at least an A-. Seriously do not take her. MISTAKE ON EVERY TEST AND ITS YOUR FAULT. Can you imagine how on a FINAL there were 9 MISTAKES. Oh and its our fault. Fake to your face. SNEAKY !
Hard professor. Everything needs to be known in detail and no partial credit is given on exams. If you are taking this class you should use the textbook and do many practice problems.
The absolute worst. Her exams never reflect what she teaches. If shes your last option, better worship the textbook. Even then, you wont expect anything more than a B. She grades harsh, no partial credit, nothing. Shell look for anything to take off points. Study on your own and maybe youll have a chance of passing.
Professor Hannia Lujan-Upton is awesome! her approached to chemistry is so different and easy to understand, she is by far the best chemistry professor I ever had and I had 2 prior. I never thought I would pass or even like chemistry but with Lujan-Upton I am seriously thinking about changing my major! TAKE HER YOU WOULD NOT REGRET IT!
She does not communicate at all. Had an issue with one of the exams. Never said a word to me. I had to constantly reach out to her and only got half replies. Never found out what happened to that exam. Likes to draw alot of molecules during exams so unless your an expert in naming good luck!!!! Never will take again.
Overall she knew her stuff about chemistry but communicated it very poorly. She is not available for you outside of class and when she is she is very rude. She is almost always 30-45 min late to each lecture even on test days. Read the textbook word for word because it's your only chance of passing. She also has tons of mistakes on every exam.
This professor was absolutely horrible. She rambles in class about random things and makes multiple errors on every single exam. Good luck trying to tell her that she is incorrect because she doesn't care. She marks you incorrect for actual correct answers and is totally unreachable. She doesn't teach well. Your best bet is to read the textbook.
one of the worst chemistry professors at LIU. I would rather get hit by a car a thousand times than have her as my professor. STAY AWAY STAY AWAY SHES THE WORST
I was originally never suppose to have her however because of an incident she took over our class. Let me tell you the amount of work I had put into this class. I really tried to study hard and prioritized this class and I still stood at an F. She doesn't respond to emails and makes degrading comments to students. DO NOT TAKE HER! I had to drop her
I don't get the bad reviews she has here. Professor Upton isn't bad at all. In fact, I think she's amazing! I wasn't supposed to have her, however, due to an incident that occurred, professor Upton stepped up and became our professor. She could be tough at times, but it is all for our benefits and learning! Professor. Upton is THE BEST!!!
Made my first semester a living hell. Grades extremely unfairly. Is no help outside of the class let alone inside the class for that matter. Lots of tests. puts things on the tests that she doesn't even teach. she doesn't explain anything and doesn't try to help you pass the course. take anyone else for chem EXCEPT HER!!
the textbook becomes your best friend for this class because she cant teach at all. you can make this class your top priority and still fail. idk if you should even spend time studying because i know everyone in my class would study the week before the exam for multiple hours a day and still manage to fail. she is impossible. don't take her.
Professor Lujan-Upton is just a different story. Many students are complaining that she is hard and her exams will make you fail, but that is not true at all. Orgo is very hard overall, but if you pay attention in class, do the homework and reading, you will just be fine. Loved taking her, and would love to have her again in the future.
Yeah she drops quizzes and all, but regardless her exams and quizzes are just horrible. You can study nonstop and only focus on this class and still do so poorly. The people who got Bs and As are probably just chem geniuses or something. She is also rude and puts in any grade that she has. Just dont take her. Not worth risking your GPA.
Prof Upton makes orgo easy to understand. Her tests/quizzes are mostly M.C. Some exams had E.C. If u want to do well in this class, u should put at least an hour of studying in everyday (u cant expect an A or B if you dont study). Go to her office hours, it helps. I advise u to read the textbook and do practice problems/ watch videos on YouTube.
I do not recommend taking any classes with this professor. Her lectures were very confusing so you will have to use the textbook or other outside resources to learn anything. Her tests and quizzes are also extremely hard and many people did not do well.
I had this prof for CHM 1 not CHM 121. She knows her Chemistry and I give her credits for that but her teaching style was terrible. The in-person students had a better communication, accessibility, and easier test taking than the remote students. Gives a good amount of extra credit (15-20 pts.) As long as you read the textbook, you'll pass.
She explains everything very well, her tests are difficult, she does not curve. She is available during office hours and you can come to her during her lab classes. Reading the textbook is very helpful and the practice problems can help, but be aware that her test questions are harder. Quizzes and lab grades boost your overall. She is very nice.
Professor Upton is very caring. She cares about every single students and wants all of them to do well. Study hard folks! It is ORGANIC CHEMISTRY! Study at least 1-2 hours every night, spend time on the homework questions, and do review sheets, and you will be fine granting at least a B in this course.
She is a solid professor that gets hated because of the difficulty of the subject she teaches. I was able to understand her lectures pretty well. One thing I didn't like about the class was that quizzes and exams had few questions, so if you aren't perfect it's tough to get a good grade. She did curve me at the end though, and she seems nice
I recommend all pharmacy students run away from this professor. she will ruin your GPA and make you feel like you dont know anything. take my word for it and drop or dont even register for her class.
Not many liked her, but I loved her! Her class is easier when you learn how she wants things done. If you learn her trends and read the textbook, you'll be fine. A lot of teaching yourself, but she's very smart and willing to help you. Make sure to practice and study A Lot. If you show effort, she'll appreciate it. But don't even think ab cheating.
Im NOT a chem genius and actually failed her midterm. focus on her lecture cause she literally tells you whats going to be on the exam. Youre graded on a few things. Show her youre trying. She gives extra 50 pts if u answer 2 questions and drops the lowest quiz. Dont think about cheating!! Dont let these comments scare u, shes not bad at all!
One of the best professors Ive had so far at LIU. The subject itself is hard so a lot of people blame the professor when it comes to the grade they get. Study at least 1-2 hours every day and review the textbook right after lecture. 5 quizzes, midterm, and final. Make sure to take notes during class! she is very good at explaining the concepts.
Going through my old emails and recalled this professor I took back at LIU - Brooklyn Campus as part of the Pre-Pharm program. Dr. Upton was notoriously late & often had quizzes. The quizzes were typically random & did not necessarily match with the current course material. After 3 40 minute late appearances, I asked for an UW. 0/5.
If you ever get the chance to switch from her class dont hesitate. She is by far the worst I mean the worst professor you can imagine. The amount of stress and hours I put in her class I can never get back. She makes your life hell and at the end she will give you the lowest grade possible. I'd love to do a petition of firing her.
Orgo chem is a very difficult subject to teach, so no matter who you take it with you need to study a lot. She wants you to understand the material and her quizzes require that you know the mechanisms. I found her very caring and wanted everyone to pass with good grades. If you want to fully understand the material then take her.
Professor Upton is a great teacher, she teaches the chemistry material very well. She can be a tough grader when it comes to labs and exams but other than that no complaints. If you take her, I would say just study a lot for her exams, because she does not give homework so labs and exams make up your grade. also gives extra credit!
shes a great person but i think she could be better at teaching. i personally always had a problem with chem so it was more difficult for me but she does her best to make the material understandable. i would definitely take her class over any other professor though. every test is online and the final is all multiple choice.
Shes a good professor dont listen to the reviews. She teaches much better than schantter.
Took her for lab and lecture. EXTREMELY grader for the labs, leaves no feedback at all, and does not offer advice. Her lecture class consists of her brushing through the material forcing you to self study. Did fine on her test, but her lab grade will bring you down. Will penalize every single thing she can. She tests your results, and penalizes you
Had her for orgo 1 and 2 last year. Consistently late to class and disorganized. Gave a bunch of quizzes, dropped the lowest one + mt and final. Labs were easy. Gave extra credit for participation in class both semesters. The most important thing I can say is take notes and read the textbook.
Professor Upton actually made me excited to go to class. Our course was specifically geared towards nursing and healthcare majors and she taught us things that actually relate to our career paths which made the class super engaging. Go to her office hours, go to review sessions, do the homework assignments and take really good notes.
Take her over schnatter. Reviews are misleading. She teaches and is very reasonable and fair with her exams . She is also very lenient with lab and you can easily do well if you show up and do the work.
She always tried to make the material relatable and digestible, and she loves questions. She responds to emails quickly. We had 4 exams + a final (cumulative). Her exams are easy and she drops the lowest. The only issue I had was with the final because she made it with another professor so there was material we hadn't covered but I still got an A.
I don't understanw why the rating is so low, to me she is the best professor for chemistry at liu
orgo is the bane of my existence upton is good teacher, she will answer your questions get ready to dedicate your life to orgo, very difficult subject. she will tell you that you are not a good healthcare worker if you don't get higher than a B in her class. she has an attitude time to time. 6 quizzes, 1 dropped. 3 tests and a final worth a lot.
Professor Upton is a very nice person who cares about the course and its material. However, her lectures were always somewhat confusing, and the tests did not reflect what I was expecting. Putting in the work and studying will be the best for you to succeed. Since there aren't many options, she is alright, and you will be fine if you work hard.
NO ONE SHOULD TAKE HER! PLEASE TAKE IT WITH NIKITA MATSUNAGA! I have taken chemistry 1 with Upton during Fall 2023 as a first-year student. Her exam was soo difficult. Half of the students failed her class when I retook it with Nikita i got it really good grade. Please don't ruin your gpa.
She's an amazing professor compare to Prof.Nikita she actually give you guidance, a lot of office hours you can go to. You REALLY have to do her homework problem which it helps so much and the exam always try to mirror the hw problem.Take her instead of Nikita because final will be 70% of her exam and 30% nikita.
Professor Upton is very caring and also she's not a tough grader. You need to attend all of her lectures because they help a lot to understand the topic. Exams are based on her lectures and mostly from the homework problems. She will boost up your grade if she sees you participating and understanding/trying to understand the topic.
Professor Upton's exams are short response and multiple choice. A very difficult and time consuming course but do all the homework problems and use office hours and you will excel. She gives inspirational speeches often and is caring.
Prepare to study. Don't believe what others say, she isn't evil. If she sees you trying, she's willing to help. She wants you to succeed. The nature of the course is just very difficult.
It is a hard class but if you take good notes and study with classmates it makes it so much easier and also fun because of how challenging it is. Definitely do the homework problems for extra practice and because she'll repeat similar questions on the exam.
She is a really good professor despite what others might say. Her lectures are simple and easy to understand. She gives micro quizzes at the beginning of class which is just one question that you have 5 minutes to solve. Very simple questions that are easy to do but with only five minutes its easy to mess up.
Definitely prefer over Schnatter. She's nice and lectures in a way that is easy to understand. Just follow the textbook and her lectures and your good.
PLEASE TAKE HER! Her lectures are easy to follow and she gives microquizzes at the start of the class. These microquizzes are similar to questions on the exam, so you know what to expect. Took the first exam and got an 85 which is a B+/A-. Couldn't believe it! Compared to other professors, she is the best!
At first I was nervous b/c I heard bad things but she's actually a really good professor who knows her stuff. She presents the topics in a simple and understandable way. She also utilizes the textbooks and post "homework" questions from the book with the answers so its really helpful when you practice/study with the textbook.
Love her! Only grades 22/25 multiple choice and one short response which are equally weighted. Some materials that she didn't cover in class appeared on the exam but it was ok. Still managed to pass. She presents the material in a simple and understandable way. Unlike Schnatter she wants you to learn and pass. Please take her over Schnatter.
She's the best! Got a perfect score on her exam. First time ever in Organic Chemistry. Thought it was impossible, but with Upton you're sure to do well. She doesn't try to trick you with impossible reactions or things we never covered. What you see in lecture, you'll expect it to be on the test. Also helpful outside of class.
Just had my first exam. She told the whole class if you don't get above a 60 on her exams you'll NEVER be a nurse. I don't think that's true. Which is crazy to say since chem is a hard course overall. I had a bio exam in the same week and got a 96 on that. Don't believe that's women's logic, chem is hard don't let her discourage you!!
This woman is ALWAYS late. She is extremely unorganized. I have a private tutor for her class and even the tutor doesn't understand how someone can make such ridiculous note slides. You can't make up what she's actually getting at. TEACH YOURSELF. I am a first year nursing student there's no reason for this class to be regular chem and orgo.
Gives a disgusting amount of opportunities for extra credit like +45 points total I think. Drops lowest test grade and is pretty nice. Doesn't give homework so if you want to practice you'll have to reference the textbook.
