Very helpful if you approach him with questions, Slides are clear and lessons are clear but goes too fast to take notes. Hes pretty bland in class but occasionally throws in jokes. Lots of OWLs that MUST be kept up with, tests are not incredibly easy nor incredibly difficult. Recommend studying days in advance
Good professor. Lectures and slides are pretty clear. DON'T wait until the last minute to start OWL assignments, they can be quite difficult and time consuming. Helpful when you ask questions. Exams are somewhat difficult. Cramming won't do. Study in advance and attend the SI sessions and exam review sessions if necessary.
He does iclicker most lectures for attendance. He has owl homework due every Thurs and Sun night. He explains material well in class and answers questions but he goes fast and his writing is messy so it can be hard to keep up. Go to SI sessions! His practice exams are easier than the actual exams and this class is not easy so study in advance.
This guy is the absolute worst! He is so boring in lecture you cant even focus, Dosent answer most questions students have, TA's dont know whats up, the owls and his practice exams have nothing to do with his exam questions, goes at his own pace, and could care less if you fail. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Find a different chemistry teacher.
Don't expect a grade higher than a C unless you are going to spend 24/7 doing work in this class. Hans thinks a test average of a 67 is good for the class. The lab is very inconsistent some TA's make you write a lab report while others don't. Homework is due twice a week which is ridiculous because us students have other classes too. Good luck....
God bless if you take this class with him ! His standards for the class are so low its sad that a professor would want a class average to be a 70. The exams are out of this world and he goes way too fast. The owls will take you hours on hours to finish and he doesn't give enough time to finish them.Just don't.
Hans is a good guy and super nice during his office hours. The practice exams are helpful but the owls are not related to the stuff he covers in class. His exams are extremely hard and there is no way to predict what he will ask. He is new to UMass and just needs to adjust his teaching style and exams slightly. Overall not a bad class but be warned
Mentzen is a good professor. I could be biased due to the fact that I'm a Chem major, but he is perfectly fine. Don't take his class if you like to be babied and want an easy A like some teachers. The grade you get is the one you deserved. You shouldn't have to curve an exam because the students aren't studying the material well enough (if at all).
Hans is a great professor! The owls are really helpful and he posts practice exams to help u prepare for the iExams. If you study and participate in class with your iClickers, it's not too bad. He's also adorable.
I like Prof. Mentzen but his lectures are basically worthless (to me, at least). It's next to impossible to take complete notes because he moves pretty fast. Attendance is mandatory. Best bet is to just listen in class and review notes he posts online. OWLs are extremely long and tedious but overall helpful. Tests are very hard & online.
I enjoyed chemistry until I took this class. Mentzen is one of those professors who does not care if his students succeed. Yes, he offers SI sessions but even the SIs are not prepared for the impossible questions he asks on the exam. Def one of those professors that knows ALOT but is incapable of teaching.
Terrible teacher. Hard. Difficult. Unhelpful. He genuinely doesn't want his students to succeed. I tried going to his office hours to ask ways I could improve my grade and he responded with "Study harder." Sorry Mentzen, I don't live and breath chemistry like you. I used to love chemistry and excelled at it, but after this class, that ended.
Hardest class. He goes so fast in lecture its almost impossible to take notes and the SI sessions didn't help. OWL homework will take HOURS and the exams are impossibly hard. Nice guy, but not the best class.
Terrible teacher. Hard and unhelpful. Switch out of this class if you can! The exams are IMPOSSIBLE.
He means well, but his teaching methods are confusing. He uses a lot of useless examples that just confused me more. He is a super nice guy and he is really understanding, but his teaching methods were just really difficult for me to follow.
Mentzen is really helpful and nice if you seek out the help. The tests are really hard but if you put in the time to study and actually learn the material you will do fine. The homework is really long but very helpful in the end.
Terrible teacher. The exams are far different from what he teaches in class and are impossibly difficult. Seems like he purposely tries to trick you by adding questions he doesn't cover so the class average stays in the 60% range. Switch out if you can!
Attendance mandatory for clicker grade.
Hans is knowledgable, approachable, and understanding. His lectures are well thought out and he tries to make them as interesting as possible (with demos, etc). I recommend taking his suggestion of doing an hr of chem a day. Don't spend longer than an hr on chem at any one time because it'll all just blur in your head. His tests are fair.
Hans is always willing to help and goes out of his way to help students learn. The class is very difficult and takes lots of work. Tests are hard but homework, Iclicker, and lab are grade boosters. Overall, the material is tough, but as a professor, hans is great.
Seems like a real nice guy, but he doesn't seem to care about his students at all. He intentionally puts questions on his tests that he never really covered to get his desired average of 68. I wouldn't recommend taking him, if you can help it. SI sessions arent terribly helpful because his tests are nothing like any problems they cover.
Awful. Switch out if you can.
If you review the practice problems on owl, you will do fine on his tests. His lectures are confusing though.
Hans is a good professor. He's always there if you need clarification. The class in general is tough. It requires a good amount of studying in order to get a good grade on the exams. DO YOUR OWL ASSIGNMENT ON TIME! Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to go for the iclicker questions. 3 exams, 5 quizzes, and 1 final! Good luck!
Hans is a good professor. Even though his lectures are helpful, most of my learning was through the owl homework which was very time consuming. I also did some preparation for this class by reading parts of the online book over the summer. I would definitely suggest doing this, as it takes a lot of practice to fully understand the material.
His tests are tricky but not impossible. He's a really clear lecturer and he does want students to fail. There's lots of homework and you need to prepare for class but it's a really good course. You should take 112 with Hans!
Study hard for the first exam and do well because you will need the grade cushion. Exams are extremely difficult and nothing like practice exams. Lots of homework and he grades clicker answers based on right or wrong. Office hours aren't very helpful. Work as hard as you can and hope for a B-.
I highly recommend not taking this class with Hans. His exams and quizzes are ridiculously hard and are very different compared to his lectures and OWL assignmentspractice exams. He provides very little help in achieving higher grades and does not seem to care about his students succeeding.
I feel like the lectures are useless. Most of the stuff he covers isn't even on the exam. You have to do the OWLs and truly understand them to do decent. Material not covered on exam will be on the exam. Practice exams are a waste, nothing like the real exams. Avoid taking him but if you can't, read the OWLs VERY closely.
Great professor. I'm no good at Chemistry but I got an A in his class. His lectures help a ton, same with the homework. If you don't put in the work, you're gonna have a bad time.
He is one of the worst chemistry professors I have ever had. He plans for the Exam average to be 68 and puts questions on the exam that you have no chance of getting to obtain his average. Also his lectures are very unclear and he tends to contradict himself a lot on top of dragging on FOREVER. He turned my love of chemistry into an utter hatred.
Hans Metzen assigns OWL homework assignments due twice a week which are doable, but he also makes extremely difficult exams that are nothing like the practice exams and heavily based on concepts rather than the actual problems themselves. He doesn't scale his exams even if the average is a 68 and although his lectures are OK, I wouldn't recommend.
Hans Metzen assigns OWL homework assignments due twice a week which are doable, but he also makes extremely difficult exams that are nothing like the practice exams and heavily based on concepts rather than the actual problems themselves. He doesn't scale his exams even if the average is a 68 and although his lectures are OK, I wouldn't recommend
Tests are nothing like anything he covers in class. I highly recommend you take another professor. He does not scale exams as long as the class average is 68. I honestly feel like his goal is for you to fail miserably; he does nothing to prepare you for the exams. If there is no other professor, wait another semester.
Hans's lectures are absolutely terrible. His notes are disorganized, he does not go over the examples that are in the homework, and his tests are ridiculously hard. He sets you up for failure and very clearly does not care about his students. He told us that a 68 quiz average is what he wants. He's too focused on giving iClickers to actually teach.
Professor Mentzen seems tough during lecture but he is the complete opposite during his office hours. He is SUPER HELPFUL and patient. SEE HIM FOR HELP! If you have interest in learning, he will be there for you 110%. The class itself isn't easy and there's a lot of material to learn but if you just go to him, it will make all the difference.
Lectures are intense. You won't stop writing the whole time there, but he is very clear and is a great lecturer. Not to mention exams are brutal, and you really have to put a lot of effort into the class, but it's absolutely worth it if you're moving onto Orgo. He is definitely the best professor for this class with naturally tough material.
If you care about your grade do not take chem 112 with Hans Mentzen. No matter how much you study for this class you will not get past 70s on his tests, I got an A in chem 111, but his class is horrible. Moves on too fast, and tests are nothing of what he teaches in lectures.
Mentzen is a good lecturer. Notes are straightforward and he explains things well. Thing is, chem is hard, and you have to really try to actually fully understand the material for tests. My advice is to do owls ahead of time so when you get to lecture it's pretty much a review. Study hard. iClickers make attendance mandatory. Good HW extra credit.
Hardest B I have ever worked for. Hans is a nice guy and clearly loves chemistry. Unfortunately, it's just a very difficult class. He expects the exam average to be about a 68, and scaling is not a thing. He does, however, give extra credit through owl and iClicker participation (by dropping 10% of clicker questions), which is helpful.
Mentzen's lectures feel long because the content delivered is difficult. Make sure to do every owl and homework assignment given to you as this will be the basis of what you learn since not much goes through in his boring lectures. Exams are very difficult but can be a piece of cake if you study. End of year there is extra credit opportunities.
The exams are a lot harder than the homework. You really have to work your butt off in this class to even pass this class. You also have to go to class because iClicker points count towards your grade.
As long as you do the HW and make sure to clear up points of confusion by reading the OWL textbook, you're going to find his lectures very helpful as a resource additional to the OWLs. When I took 112 with him his lectures were always in sync with the OWL homework so that was a little annoying, but meh.
Mr. Mentzen is not a professor, he is a lecturer. He knows his field well but fails at sharing it with others. If you take his class, be ready to have your GPA hurt. The OWLS homework is heavy and does not reflect his exams. Unless your very very good with your math skills, don't take Chem from him. He is young and has not yet learned how to teach.
One of my favorite professors. This man had the patience of a saint. I worked my butt of for my A but I loved every minute of it. Those exams are extremely tough but I felt that your effort in the class directly correlated with your performance. Highly highly recommend him. Go to office hours and ask as many questions as you would need.
Class is extremely tough, but Hans is a good guy, willing to help. Got a D the first time, had to retake it and got an A-. DO THE OWLS. DO ALL OF THEM. He designs the tests to average a 68, so taking the tests is a shock because its like nothing you've ever seen. Figure out early that the exams are going to be horrible so prepare yourself well.
Chem 112 is a tough course, but Hans makes it bearable. He wants students to do well and gives a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester. If you pay attention and do the owls, you will do fine in the class.
Hans was an amazing professor. He is very clear in his lectures, expectations, and office hours, but when it comes to exams he expects you to work hard for high grades. He was content with 64-68 averages, but he did give some extra credit at the end of the semester. IClicker means attendance is mandatory and there was biweekly homework.
Lectures are clear and he is really helpful during office hours. He also gives extra credit for doing extra homework problems. He also will replace your lowest test grade with the final if you did better. I got a 95 on the first exam, 60 on the 2nd, and 86 on the 3rd. I studied hard & managed a 100 on the final which was a life saver for the 60!
Hans is actually a really good professor. His exams are tough, but if you pay attention in class you will really understand the content better. He will always clear up any points of confusion you just have to ask. He gives out a fair amount of extra credit at the end of the semester too. As long as you do the owls and pay attention, you'll do fine
Reading some of these reviews confuses me because the exams are not "impossible" nor do they have "unexpected material". Hans gives take home exams the day before the actual exam and not only do they count as part of your exam grade, but they have the EXACT same questions as the exams (changing a couple numbers). He is also funny and very fair.
This class has been changed from past semesters, that being said I found Hans to be a great lecturer. He knows how to teach , if you pay attention and put some effort in you will understand the material clearly. The material isn't the easiest but he gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed in. Also lots of Iclickers
great guy. great professor, tough class. Make sure to do well in the exams because they count for the majority of your grade. His lectures are fantastic but I took lie 4-5 pages of notes in every single one. Do all the OWLs. He really tries to make class enjoyable but the material is tough :/
I-clickers in class. LOTS of homework due every Thursday and Sunday. Gives a little extra credit. Exams are HARD. Great professor, and willing to explain anything you don't understand. However, he doesn't make the class easy. He just wants the majority of students to pass with a C-. If you want an A or B, you've got your work cut out for you.
He is clear, which is all that matters. He gives extra credits and pyramid exams. Tests are not tough and he makes them easy. Overall it was an easy A class.
Hans is great at teaching chemistry and clearly knows his stuff. He does however, expect you to work hard in his class and attendance is mandatory (via iclicker) and his tests are TOUGH (fill ins and mcqs). He's pretty friendly during office hours/after class and he wants his students to succeed - so don't be afraid to ask for help.
Chem 112 was a really hard class. I didn't do exceptionally well in it, but I passed because of Hans. He cares a lot about what he teaches, and if you put the effort in you can do really well. My only regret is that I didn't go to the SI sessions. Hans is a really good teacher and you get out of this class exactly as much as you put in.
Hans is a nice guy but a seriously tough grader and the class is just really hard! Work at it and you can do well, but he tests on stuff that we didn't really go over in class. KNOW YOUR "ICE" TABLES!!!!!!!!
Took this class twice and ended up with the same grade. Menzten knows what he's talking about but is a horrible professor. Gives you a bunch of resources to study from but tests on completely different material. He's content with class averages of 60s and 70s. Does not scale and does not give extra credit. Avoid this professor!
He knows his stuff and is enthusiastic about it, but despite this he is not helpful at all, giving careless explanations to questions. His tests are extremely tough and he is not clear as to what he expects on them, several of my classmates lost upwards of 30 points for not using sig figs, something he had never mentioned or used in the class.
Hans is definitely a smart man. Sometimes he will do in-class demos which are nice, but the inverted pyramid exams are saving my grade. The exams are a little challenging and he moves semi-quickly in class. Definitely take advantage of the SI's. He also does iClicker questions.
Hans is a pretty good teacher. The class was hard, and I had to work hard to get a good grade. He gives extra credit at the end of the semester which is nice. It boosted my grade a good amount.
Warning you to take Chem 112 with ANY other professor besides Mentzen. He switches up the class every semester and just makes it harder and harder on students. The final was the hardest final I've ever taken in my life. Also the "pyramids" he does, yeah those are only 25%/75%. If you like your GPA right now, DO NOT take any Chem with him.
Professor Mentzen is an amazing lecturer, he captivates the attention of his students and he really knows his stuff. He may seem intimidating but he is helpful. However, his exams are ridiculously challenging. No matter how hard I tried, I still struggled to do well. Make sure you make smart friends in the class to take the pyramid exam with.
I respect being passionate about chemistry and only wanting good students to pass, but for someone not in a chem major I struggled. I'm used to being a straight A student and I tutored chem in HS. This class absolutely shattered my ego. If you're a die hard chem lover, go for it. Otherwise you can expect hard homework and much harder tests
His tests don't fairly/accurately reflect the material he focuses on. The material is difficult but not too bad. Just do the hw and go to review sessions, his lectures are also helpful review if you do the hw before them.
He's a really tough one. I guess he is accessible but sometimes he made me feel uncomfortable asking questions because whenever I asked some basic questions, he got really cold and I felt judged. I wouldn't take him again. I studied for this class for so much and I'm a good student too. But I still did bad in his class.
He honestly is not as bad as everyone says. His class is hard but he teaches and explains everything very well. He is also helpful during office hours. There is built in extra credit in the homework and iClickers. Tests are tough but there are pyramid exams to boost your grade.
Professor Mentzen seems to get a lot of hate. I completely disagree. He is really engaged in the learning, and tries his best to make sure you understand the material. His way of doing lectures is nice, he writes down the key bits as he goes along onto the slides. The material may be difficult but that doesn't make Mentzen a bad teacher. Go to SI's
He does a decent job with lecture notes but honestly he's a bad professor. He enjoys giving hard exams and does not scale. The class average on one exam was a 68 and he seemed happy about it. I would avoid him, unfortunately a lot of the times he's the only one teaching chem 112
Great guy, great teacher, went to all lectures and did all homework and it was not enough to do well on exams. Go to SIs i couldnt becasue i work but it is necessary to do well. I
Great professor. Not an easy class by any means. You must put in work but not impossible to do well. iClickers everyday, lots of OWL hw,pyramid exams before each exam which are similar to real exam. Managed a 90 on exams with a few hours studying each day. Final exam was curved and there is built in extra credit for iClicker and hw so do them ALL.
I thought he was good. His exams are challenging but I guess that's chemistry for you. Offers pyramid before each exam (25% exam grade). Study hard and you'll be fine. Office hours 4 days a week. Does assign a lot of homework, gives you extra credit if you do all of it. Final exam is tough, study a lot for it. Does cool demos in class sometimes.
Exceptional professor with a clear and concise manner of teaching; was accessible and committed to assisting students. Had a genuine desire to allay fears, promoted self-confidence, and inspired perseverance. Very organized and succinct with class structure and expectations. Be prepared to study diligently and take responsibility for learning.
Chemistry 112 is a hard class no matter what and whether you do well or not depends on the effort you put in. Hans is a good lecturer in my opinion and if you study a reasonable amount and do all the owls you should be able to pass. His lectures are organized and he usually follows a concept with an example exam style question on that concept.
Hans Mentzen is by far one of the worst professor's i have ever had. He does a very poor job of teaching and assigns way too much homework. Tests are very difficult. Attendance is mandatory and iclicker question are tough. Do whatever you can to not take this professor.
Hans Mentzen is the worst teacher I have had in my entire life. He gives an absurd amount of OWLS, to the point where you just crank them out without learning a thing just to get them done in time. His tests are impossible and he grades iclicker questions for accuracy. Whatever you do pick another professor! The pain isn't worth the bad grade.
Hanz Mentzen is crazy. I've never in my life had as much homework as this man gives. 40 Owls a WEEK is AVERAGE. And they take forever. The tests are really hard too. He said a class average one out second exam was "normal" and in the range he usually gets. He was ok with that. Try to get Whelan if you can since, or have to retake this class like me
Professor Mentzen is not the easiest professor I've ever had. He makes you work for the grade, but that's what most classes are like. He's not just out there trying to fail everyone, he really cares about his students. The exams, along with the class itself, are difficult, but do the work and you will receive the grade that you want.
Extremely difficult exams, grades iClicker questions. Really low class averages, but that doesn't seem to phase him. Cumulative final exam, no specific things to study. Avoid this professor!!
Extremely hard exams. Test averages are 70's at best. Go to class, do all the clickers and do all of the hw to get extra credit. Weekly review lectures are really helpful and his office hours are convenient
Tries to help you out a lot at the end of the semester with extra credit, having your final replace your lowest grade, etc. but that is all just to make up for how low the grades are and how difficult the class is. Tons of homework, too much information given each lecture, and very difficult tests. Avoid Hans if possible as other teachers seem best
Please please please pick another chem professor. I am just an average student, paying tuition that wanted to get good grades and I was completely destroyed by this class. Don't waste your time or money, go to another prof. Other teachers will scale, etc. Hans will not, the average was a D and he thought that was good! I will have to retake this.
One of the harder professors for this class but also the best. His tests were difficult but he made it clear what would be on them and provided all the tools you needed to prepare for them. Its clear to see he cares a lot about chemistry and his students.
He actually makes you work for your grade. Do everything ahead of time, especially the OWLs, to ensure success. It feels like a sufficient college class.
Goes over plenty of example problems. Great review sessions. Truly cares about the comprehensibility of his lectures.
He tries a lot to make you get good grades. Give you extra credit and encourage you to work hard. His classes are organized and he always makes things clear and easy to understand. Study hard, review the slides and practice exams, and you will be OK.
The material is definitely difficult, but do the practice problems and you will be fine. The take-home exam is very similar to the real one. You get extra credit for doing all of the homework, and some clicker questions are dropped so even if you get some wrong, you could get full credit
Lots of homework and very hard exams. Go to all the classes and do all the hw and he will give you a ton of extra credit. Si's and lecture reviews are very helpful. Hans is also very helpful in his office hours!
Would not recommend. Clicker questions are every lecture and graded, pyramids exams are only 25 percent of your test grade and different from the original exam, the grades are not scaled, and his explanations are not necessarily the best. Expect to work reallyyy hard if you take this course.
Did not learn a single thing in his class. Homework seems simple, but are entirely different from the exams. For his exam reviews he only goes over the simple things, but gives you the complicated stuff on the exams. He is content if the class average on an exam is in the 60s. Goes very fast with notes, so don't bother taking notes during lectures.
Definitely a tough class but you can make it a lot easier on yourself by going to every class and doing all of the owls before they're due- he usually gives some extra credit for owls. Exams are tough but pyramids can help your grade and he gives extra credit for the exams. Review the questions he goes over in class- theyre most like exam questions
The class is not nearly as difficult as many of these comments make it seem. Professor Mentzen is a very fair professor and provides his students with more than enough materials to succeed. His notes are concise and fairly simple, and he happily answers any and all questions during lecture. Take initiative and be proactive and you'll be fine.
Really good teacher-lectures are interesting LOTS OF HOEMWORK- every Thursday and Sunday ( >4 hrs) Exams- very difficult - no MCQ for calculation questions One of those classes where you understand the lecture and bomb the exam
He seemed good at first but is getting worse as the semester is progressing. He assigns tons and tons of homework for chapters we have barely covered or haven't even started yet, and is rude to students when they ask questions about material. the exams are nothing like the practice exams or homework problems. Good luck!
I tried so hard in his class... he is a good guy but not a great teacher just like most chem professors I've had. he gives simple examples in class only to bombard us with homework for hours and hours, and the tests are all conceptual whereas the homework emphasizes math. if you are bad at math, this class is NOT FOR YOU!!!
I'll preface by saying he is kind in office hours, he will help you if you ask. However, this class is all about playing the "game." He has designed this class for a very specific type of learner. It is extremely word problem heavy, similar to how statistics concepts are delivered. There is little wiggle room for visual, hands ons learners.
I took AP Chem in high school so I may not be speaking for most people here but chem 111 is a fair class with Professor Mentzen. Your grades come from iclicker questions, which are part of every lecture as attendance points (so if you don't go to class, you won't pass), OWL homework, which are very doable if you're using the notes, and lab grades.
He is a brilliantly minded professor, open to any questions and encourages students to reach out if they are having trouble understanding a concept. He cares a lot about the subject and loves to teach. Yes he can be strict and assign a little more homework some weeks than others, but you shouldn't complain about having to put effort in in college.
Hans Metzen is a very clear instructor, who in my opinion teaches at a slow pace. His I-clicker questions help a lot and will go through the material, so it is helpful to do the owl homework. very basic chemistry... easy to pass.
A great teacher. But his exams are not all multiple choice like other chem teachers. Thats the only reason why I wouldn't take him again.
He's a pretty good professor overall, idk why his rating is so low. His lectures are pretty solid. My only problem is that sometimes on the homework there are problems that he didn't teach in class. Also he once made HW due before he taught the material. But other than that, he's a good dude. He wants his students to pass.
He rushes through material and explains things in a more complicated way than needed. You need to go to SI reviews, tutoring, and do the homework and study 24/7 to do well in his class. If you miss a day you will fall behind. I bank on my lab grades, iClicker questions, and homework- tests are short and easy to do poorly on.
Don't listen to the other reviewers, Prof Mentzen is great. If you go to class and understand the homework, you will be fine. His exams can be a little harder than the other profs since it has some fill in math, but he weights his less. He scales the OWL and clicker questions, so it is easy to get over 100% for 25% of your overall grade.
I literally never got above a 55 on an exam & got a 37 on the final yet I was able to pass with a 71. Do good on the labs and DO YOUR OWL ASSIGNMENTS and you'll be okay. Overall a stressful class, but he was really helpful and nice to me in office hours. He is very fast paced compared to the other chem professors
Overall very good professor for Chem 111. Exams are more difficult than other professors as they are fill in the blank for math versus multiple choice. Taking notes in class is needed. Owl practice exams help a lot when it comes to exams. If you study and understand the notes exams are fine, do all the homework and go to class to get extra credit.
This class wasn't too bad for me since I knew a lot of the material from Chem in high school. If you're not confident in this subject I would recommend another prof. since the lecture pace is quite fast (don't even bother w/ notes) & he doesn't do all multiple choice tests. As long as you understand the Owl questions you should do fine on tests.
Hans is very difficult, and the class pace is quite fast, but he goes over material very well. He also wants you to succeed, unlike a lot of professors...
Prof. M is one of my favorite professors Ive had at UMass. He makes himself very available to help us as much as we need and really shows he cares about us learning. He explains things in lectures really well, and has clear grading criteria. His class is hard but its worth all of the work.
Hans is a tough professor but is understanding. He goes very quick in the lectures. Go to Si sessions. I failed one exam and still got a A-. The exams are exactly like the practice exams and OWL masterys. Just do all the OWLS assigned, clickers and do decent on the quizzes and you'll be good.
very inconsiderate. poor quality lectures with lots of typos which skip lots of the info you are tested on. tells you if it is not in lecture you will not be tested but this is not true. do ALL the hw before your quiz/test bc that is only way to actually learn for the test.
Took Mentzen over the winter semester at UMass. He was very helpful whenever I had a question or computer issue and responded to emails promptly. The lecture videos are old and don't always match up with exams, but the OWL homework is similar to exam questions (same format). Definitely not a class you could cruise by in, but it was manageable.
If you have the option not to take his class, dont. He's extremely unsympathetic and doesn't care about your grade. One of those people who prides themselves on no one passing their class.
I love prof mentzen! He expects a lot from his students and his exams are 25 multiple choice and fill in the blank questions. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. You definitely need to complete the owl homework every week, it helps a lot when it comes to the exam. Just be prepared to work hard.
Mentzen really does care about the success of his students. As long as you go to class and do the homework, you'll definitely pass. While the exams are difficult, there's a lot of built in extra credit in the homework assignments and iclicker questions.
Worst chem prof. If you didnt take AP chem don't even bother with him. Drop while you can. He doesn't care about students success and literally flat out says if you do bad its because you're not trying hard enough. Owls are a massive pain and his lectures are hard to follow. He always cancels or changes his office hours too.
people complain about hans but i think hes a really good professor. definitely do the owl or youre screwed. i dont think the material is that hard and he does a good job explaining it, but you do need to work for your grade. he is very reasonable, does iClicker questions every day, and doesnt really make exceptions. im taking chem 112 with him
Hans is a good professor, all classes are lectures which can be dry but he moves very fast. He is good with the material and is effective at teaching it, but for tests he expects you to memorize several long lists which other professors give you (polyatomic ions, solubility rules, etc.) As a person he can also be slightly mean, but its bearable
His lectures never matched with what the exam material. Mentzen never seemed to care about how his students were doing. I attended every single SI session and in fact the other classes SI session as well. I did all the homework and attended the lectures. Overall, don't recommend taking chem 111 or any other class with Mentzen.
Do all of the OWL assignments and show up to every lecture and do the iClicker questions because he drops 20% of each, so if you do everything, you will get extra credit. one of the harder chem profs because he make you memorize things such as the solubility rules and math questions on exams are not multiple choice. Good grades in lab will save u
If you want to cry everyday, take this class. He could not have cared less about his students and their success. For a gen ed course, this was nearly impossible and made me consider my whole existence. His exams are not multiple choice, allow no partial credit and do not align whatsoever with other chem professors. Trust this review, switch now.
explains concepts pretty well but his lectures are boring. come to class and do the hw, it gets you extra credit. for exams memorize what you're supposed to & do the "chapter _ practice problems" on owl, those are super helpful. formatting matters on tests, so if for example you write "2-" instead of "-2" for oxidation number you don't get credit
Mentzen is the worst. Do not take him if you want to pass chem. He's a confusing lecturer and was put under review a few years back because his tests are too hard so too many students were failing. He is the only professor who has open response questions on his tests and doesn't give the solubility rules.
He is the best professor I have had at UMass. He has well organized lectures and the expectations for the course are very clear. It is hard and a lot of work, but if you do the work you will succeed. I found chem 112 to be easier than chem 111 with fermann by a significant amount!! The course is stressful, but go to office hours it helps so much!
Unfortunately, chemistry is a course that you are going to have to put in a lot of work. Going to the S.I. sessions regularly, doing practices exams and the review problems, doing your HW and more. If you do all of this, although it is a lot of work, you will do great! One thing I will say is I heard he is not a good professor for Chem 111.
As long as you put effort into doing the OWL assignments, this class is a breeze. Mentzen explains examples in class well, and uses iClicker to make you pay more attention during lectures. Exams are a good mix of math and conceptual problems.
Hans Metzen isn't a bad professor by any means, I very much enjoyed his class. However, after hearing about my friends CHEM 111 experiences with their professors, I will say if another section w/ another prof is open, you should go for it. He is one of the more difficult professors.
The exams are very similar to practice exams so do those and you will be fine. There are online quizzes and extra credit opportunities to boost your grade. At the end of the semester he drops a bunch of homework and iClicker points. He can sometimes be confusing but overall cares about his students and it is not hard to do well in this class.
Not very accommodating and hard to understand
The first test will hit very hard, you have to study for it. Hans is a hard professor but his grading is fair. He will come off a bit cold but he is a great guy and will answer question after question during lectures if you ask. Absolutely hilarious hearing him tell us about "why they won't let me bring ___ into the classroom anymore". NOT easy.
Graded tougher than other Chem teachers for tests and made you memorize more formulas than other profs. Hot headed at times. Not as clear and good at teaching as other profs.
You should try to get a different chem111 professor. This choice should be your last choice.
Do not take his class if you are not naturally gifted in chemistry. He rarely provides explanations for concepts, and expects us to figure that out on our own. He teaches the course through a certain matter- its almost like he thinks that all the material is a review of what we learned in high school, which is only correct to a certain degree
This class is very lecture heavy and exam heavy. I showed up to all classes yet I failed almost all the exams. Chemistry is hard but this professor makes it harder.
The exams are very different from the homework and the examples he gives in-class. It seems as though he gives you the most challenging questions for each subject.
His lectures and homework isn't the absolute worst, but the exams hit like a truck.
Professor Hans is great. Hans always was to the point, clear, and never over complicates any topic of Chem111. There are a fair amount of OWLs for his class, and they are crucial. You must do the homework, and extra practice to succeed in your exams. Overall, Hans was a fair and to the point professor. I would always recommend him.
It might take a while to get used to Professor Hans' class since he can sometimes go through lectures fast. However once getting used to it, his lectures are very clear and concise and he doesn't leave room for confusion. Doing the OWL homeworks and clicker questions is very helpful for not falling behind in class.
I think he is a very great professor. I hate chemistry but he made it very bearable. He's a fast lecturer, but if you do the homework you'll be prepared for the class. Overall I think he's a great professor, and is improving every time he teaches. As long as you put some effort into the class, you'll be sure to do well.
This professor gives A LOT of homework, however, if you do them throughout the week and don't procrastinate, you should be fine. His practice tests are similar to the actual exam but are still difficult. With this professor, you must be ready to show up to every lecture and put hours aside outside of class.
Mentzen was a fantastic professor and sets his students up for success. If you put in the work and do homework you will be successful. There are countless opportunities to have extra help in his class and the tests are based off homework and quizzes. He is very respectable and also provided opportunities to make up assignments at the end of term.
Avoid taking his class if possible. Find a different chem professor.
Professor Mentzen is an overall good professor. He definitely knows chem, and is willing to help if you're willing to ask. The class moves at a really fast pace, but as long as you do the homework and keep up you will be ok. He streamed his classes on Zoom so it's easy to stay in class. If you skip you'll definitely have a hard time keeping up
Overall, i enjoyed Chem 111 with Hans Mentzen. The class is by no means easy, but if you attend lectures and are diligent with the OWL homework and regular studying, you will do fine on the exams.
He clearly cared about his subject and about students doing well. He was easy to access out of class and answered any questions. He does go fast in his lectures, so prepare to write fast. There is also a lot of homework, but it is usually easy. Gives lots of extra credit. Its an easy class with time management. I was able to get a 100 overall grade
I had a great time learning from Prof. Mentzen. Although there was quite a bit of homework, anxiety-inducing exams, and I found the subject itself to be quite difficult, Mentzen genuinely cares about his students and is willing to go the extra mile to help them out. Has great, informative lectures and great test prep materials. Overall nice guy
Hans tests we're very hard and unlike anything we went over in class. His lectures were not helpful, the only thing like the tests is the owl homework. He was also difficult to talk too.
I didn't love professor Mentzen, but he was honestly a really good professor. He had a lot of homework that took awhile to get done but it really helps to understand the material. His lectures were clear and there wasn't a lot of confusion when it came to figuring out all of the math he had taught us. I think he just really knew what he was doing.
Not for everyone.
Lectures felt like a waste of time, mostly taught myself on owl. He makes us do and memorize things that the other chem 112 professors didn't. Nice man but definitely the most difficult one.
Class average for exams are super low and quizzes for every chapter.
Professor Mentzen teaches in a way that is easy to follow. As long as you do the homework, you should be set.
Fantastic professor. Genuinely cares about students and wants them to succeed. Lectures were super helpful. Grading was clear with good feedback and not an overwhelming amount of work. Just do the hw and go to lectures and you'll do just fine.
He's really rigid, but also invested in making sure students do well. Overall, he's good at explaining concepts and giving students advice on how to solve test questions.
Great guy overall! Definitely cares about student success, when my class took the third exam everyone did bad and he let us do a take-home exam with no time limit. Zoom option for this class was available but I would not recommend it. Lectures focus on OWL material and he also posts videos on the same material Lets u know when his office hours are.
AMAZING. He is understanding and gives lots of EC. Material can be hard but he goes over it very well. He clearly cares about his students and is honestly my favorite prof here. As long as you pay attention and study you will get an A. He walks through some problems in class and explains common errors
I don't know whether it's better in person, but he does not care at all about his students. In the first week alone, he updated the syllabus 5 or 6 times in response to student emails, in which he would usually respond "it's on the syllabus, read it before emailing" or the like. He actively lied multiple times, and rarely holds any office hours.
Prof. Mentzen kills it again. Had him for CHEM111, and despite the harder material in 112 he shows just as much dedication to his students. Clearly wants everyone to succeed. Goes the extra mile to make sure each of his students is graded fairly and makes the most of the class. Great guy
Brags that the average is a C+. Not flexible regarding health issues and won't listen if you have disability services. Doesn't write on the slides - you really have to listen. Doesn't write out the math so if you're not solid in math you're going to struggle. The only good part is that the practice exam is VERY similar to the actual exam.
For reference, this is my second time taking chem 112 with Mentzen and though I didn't have to drop it this time, I regret taking chem with him again. He is a little funny and really is a good guy but when the semester gets tough, you will not be laughing along with his jokes. He teaches pretty good in exams but you would have to spend A LOT of
Time on homework and the exams are a step up of difficulty from homeworks and reviews. Our class average for the 3rd exam was 58% and he averages it with a take home, but overloads homework, quizzes, exams. Overall he's cool, but doesn't teach conceptual well and at least half of exams are conceptual (multiple choice) half are hard calculations.
I liked Mentzen but I can see how his style isn't for everyone. Expectations are clear and practice exams help a lot, but there is a lot of self teaching to do to find success. He offers a lot of extra credit and is very helpful with questions outside of the classroom. I would recommend him as long as your semester load is relatively lighter.
Mentzen is an amazing professor. This class is very easy if you enjoy chemistry and the exams are very similar to the practice exams and OWL homework. His lectures are easily understandable and he will slow down and provide plenty opportunities to ask questions as needed. I highly recommend this class with Mentzen!
good professor, tried to make sure that everyone was on the same page. very generous with grading. my only complaint is how fast he teaches, but it is nice that he has summarized recordings of the lectures to watch outside of class. very understanding and caring professor!
People made his class sound really scary but as long as you put in the work, you'll do great. It is a crazy amount of studying but it pays off.
Dr. Mentzen was a really good professor. He was very lenient with homework, often extending it. He explained the topics quite well, but he went a little too fast sometimes. If you do the homework and practice exams, you'll definitely do well. Overall, he was a good professor and I hope to get him in Chem 112 as well.
Mentzen is funny, kind, knowledgable, and loves what he does. Each lecture's slides are posted on Moodle, so if you miss class, you need to teach yourself. Quizzes are open note. Exams are a bit tough, but doable if you study. Owl assignments are a pain but prepare you for exams. Overall a very entertaining class, especially if you like chem.
Mentzen seems like a good funny guy, but I just didn't click with his teaching style. Homework would get a bit overwhelming at times and the class test averages were always pretty low.
I've heard from many people that they feel Hans is a bad teacher, but those are also the people who didn't put any effort into the class. Sure sometimes he can throw a lot of information in one class but if you actually pay attention and take a couple notes it becomes clear. Chem is a hard subject but he understands student struggles
Good prof at teaching chem! Learned a lot from him! Classes aren't mandatory but helpful for exams! There is weekly hw, not too much + helps with exams! Practice exams are always given which helps prepare for exams (similar format fr)! Many resources are made by him (ex. mini videos of each chapter by him, practice problems, etc) 100% recommend
Not a terrible class if you put in the work but very fast paced and he does not go through the algebra for his examples, so if you have a hard time with math, dont take hime. He is always answers questions, but is not accommodating with disability services or if you miss anything for any reason. All the slides are posted. Lectures on Echo360.
Hans Mentzen helped me grasp Chemistry as a whole. I took Chem 111 and 112 with him and his lectures along with iClicker questions were super helpful.
This guy adds extra quizzes which is completely unnecessary, and makes them due BEFORE the homework is due. He also will make like barely any homework due one week and like three times too much homework the next week. He is also completely unaccommodating and arrogant if you have an exam conflict. Worst professor I've ever had. I hate that guy.
Good professor. He can go through the material quickly but is very understanding and good at explanations. The OWLs are awful and the first few units are not at all taught in class so you do have to learn some things by yourself. Exams are not bad either. Office hours are accessible and there is 10 percent extra credit too.
Mentzen is a difficult professor, but its because he has high expectations and expects you to put the work in to do well. Explains concepts well and gave decent lectures, really wanted you to understand the why behind a problem, but the OWL homework taught me a majority. Very good about replying to emails and meeting him outside normal office hours
He is clearly very passionate about what he teaches and he makes sure no one gets left behind
A solid Professor who does his best to help students. Weekly OWL homework due Sunday (do all the homework for extra credit). Occasional open-book/note quizzes are due some Fridays. 3 midterms + final. If you want to do well on exams you really need to know the concepts well. Beware the practice exams are not exactly like the real exams.
I am a STEM major and put up with most teachers, however difficult they may be. I went into this class hoping to make it work but Professor Mentzen is just so cold and condescending in class and during office hours. I really really struggled in this class and am otherwise an A student. If you can choose another professor, do so!
He is a good lecturer. Exams are bad because they are all fill ins, almost no MCQs, there are easier Chem 112 sections with majority MCQ exams. I liked Mentzen however hated his exams. He has extra credit of HW, he also replaces the lowest exam with final if final score is > than average. He has nice short concise explanation videos on moodle.
Overall not a bad professor but succeeding in his class requires WAY more effort than in others. Hans is great at teaching but he makes earning a good grade in his class much harder than it should be. Exams rarely match up with the practice ones. He includes intense conceptual questions that can tank your grade (7ish/20 exam questions).
This is the first non-A grade I have gotten in college. He has open ended exams which is ridiculous because you cant even get partial credit, while all the other profs use multiple choice. AVOID him if possible, he offers times to meet and speak but he offers very little help.
As long as you show up to class and do the homework you will be fine. He was very approachable during office hours and seemed to really care about student success. If you do all the OWL homework you get 10% extra credit and your final can you replace your lowest midterm grade if your final is higher than the average of your 3 midterms.
Get ready to study. Chem 112 is hard and he does his best to make it easier, since I think his lecture are thorough and understandable. His exams can ask a lot of conceptual stuff so just being able to calculate things won't cut it. Really try and take good notes and go over his slides when studying, it really helps.
Prof is nice and into chem. I missed lectures, but make sure to attend them (or you might go downhill like me). Make sure to finish all owl homework on time (and prepare good enough time to do it before deadline). Exams/quizzes aren't that bad as it's like the homework questions.
Chem 112 with Professor Mentzen is no easy feat, but with dedication and the right study tools like unstuck study, you can succeed. His lectures are thorough, but exams test conceptual understanding. Stay on top of homework, use practice materials, and consult the professor - he cares about student success.
His tests are the hardest for chem 111, because they are all open ended, so just take any other professor and the tests will be way easier.
He is very straightforward with the topics. He also posts all the lecture recordings and even other recordings he does on his own. VERY much like Owl. His exams are exactly like them. Practice owl.
Overall Professor Mentzen is a nice professor, and he seems to know what he is doing. Homework is alright, but exams are tough, since they are fill in the blank questions, and loads you'll need to know, as each lecture covers certain material needed for exams. By all means, AVOID THIS GUY, AND YOU'll SURVIVE CHEM!
Overall, he is nice and cares about the student success. The exams are exactly like the OWL homework, just make sure that you review the OWL homework and practice tests carefully and you will pass easily. His lectures are great, but fast and a bit hard to understand. You may need to reread the slides or participate in SI sessions.
Easiest class I've taken at UMASS. He overexplains the concepts honestly. I ended up with over a 100 in the class with the OWL and PLTL extra credit. Go to lectures and you will be fine. I did not do any studying outside the class outside of the HWs.
he is really passionate about chemistry and is always willing to help, but he's just not a great prof. i always have to teach myself on OWL because his lectures are always so packed with information that he doesn't explain well. he gives weekly quizzes and 3 exams + 1 final, all the exams are almost fully fill-in questions so no MCQ.
This is the worst teacher ive ever had. Yes, chem is a hard subject, but mentzen just makes it harder. Im not very good at chem and the way he teachers doesn't help in any way. do not take him if you care about your GPA.
He cares a lot about the subject. He makes lectures pretty clear and tries to make them interesting. He has the hardest exams as most of the questions are open response while other professors only give multiple choice, but they still are fairly easy if you studied.
His class was pretty easy to adapt to with a general background in chemistry. Practice exams were really similar to the exams so doing those and old homework will prepare you well for exams. The homework is very manageable, you get a whole week to do it.
Mentzen teaches very straight to the point and makes his lectures easy/understandable IF you have a decent background on chemistry. He has offered us extra credit from exams boosting my exam percentage good amount. His homework are given a week in advance and are easy. His exams have open responses but are so similar to practice exams/homework.
Classes are lecture heavy, but he always makes sure that the majority of his students understand. If you can do all the homework and practice exams, you should be good for exams. He is very accessible via email or office hours if you need help. He tries to set his students up for success. He can be a bit fast at times, but he is a great professor.
Mentzen is not a terrible teacher but honestly you're better off taking another gen ed chem teacher. He moves very very fast and exams are back to back. So it can feel so overwhelming, and his exams can sometimes be very confusing. Like sometimes it can be exactly like the practice exam and other times completely different. The final is no joke!!
Hans wasn't the worst professor but he comes off as very intimidating. The tests are fair but definitely hard and people I knew who had the other gen chem professor did a lot better with minimal effort. If you take Hans just be prepared to do so much work outside the lecture and study weeks in advance for tests.
If you do not have a strong chem background, AVOID MENTZEN! He moves very fast in lectures, I often left feeling completely lost. When students ask ?s in class, he is often rude and moves on quickly. Be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING using OWL homework. If you want a good grade, be prepared to put in a LOT of time/effort outside of class.
The lectures were very helpful and Professor Mentzen was able to answer questions very clearly. Attendance is not mandatory but the lecture go by quick and sometimes he would let us out early too. The homework counts as extra credit and the practice exams are very similar to what the exams will actually look like.
His lectures were not so fast that it was overwhelming, but got through the content of the course at a good pace. He was always available for his office hours and was willing to help with questions. I think he wanted his students to do well and gave the class lots of opportunities to get help on material.
Mentzen was really tough, especially on EXAMS! His exams were a mix of open response, and multiple choice (to be fair it was mostly open response). HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS, AND YOUR BASICALLY ON YOUR OWN IN THAT CLASS. AVOID HIM, IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE CHEMISTRY.
A great professor and cares about students. Just doing your assignments on time is extra credit. I personally don't like the way that exams are graded, though. But overall, quite an easy A if you give it some effort!
Homework and Lecture Heavy
Take Taffet instead if you can. His voice during lectures is so monotone I almost fell asleep during most classes. Exams are awful because if you mess up one digit in OWL you get the whole question wrong, and he would throw things on the exams that he never talked about in class. Good guy, not a great professor.
He has some iffy reviews but I think Mentzen is an awesome professor. Yes, he moves quickly through lectures and sometimes the OWL hw is a lot, however, there is so much available support and if you use it you will do well. He's a great guy and he's great at answering students' questions whenever they come up. He cares about his students.
Hans is a clear and fun lecturer given the amount of content that needs to be covered. OWL homework is the epitome of suffering. Hans does try to give some leeway where possible in grading. 112 doesn't need life devotion but prioritize the class and it'll be fine.
Despite many opinions Hans was not as bas as I thought. The class was rough for sure but chemistry is in general. He was helpful when I went to his office hours and if you studied a lot for the exam all questions except one were not a out of the ordinary. Stay on track with your owls and go for help when you get behind, you can do this!
Mentzen is a great professor for chemistry. His lectures are easy to understand and go through, even if you aren't in class. He makes himself very available for office hours, and just after class, to answer any questions and clear confusion. Exams are just like the weekly quizzes and OWL homework which makes them easy to prepare for.
Easy class, well taught
He understands the material he's teaching and wants you to learn. He also opens homework up at the end of the semester in case you missed it. The course can be tough but chemistry is any form is. He encourages contacting him outside of class if you need help. He can answer any question without pausing. Overall, great professor.
If u are doing chem 111 or 112, i highly recommend Hanz. Not only does he clearly explain the material, He gives u an opportunity to succeed, so if you do what he says you will learn the material and get a good grade. Anybody who complains about hanz doesnt try and blames it on him. Also the other professors are way worse for chem lol.
He is a really good professor and really engaging during lecture but CHEM 112 with him is really hard. His exams are the hardest exams I have had to take. There is SO much homework every week. He is super accessible outside of class and cares about what he is teaching. If you are not a good test taker don't take the class.
As a professor he's great and is very clear during his lectures. The course is well organized. His CHEM 112 class is difficult but I feel like that is expected for a chemistry class. My only gripe is that every question for the 20-question exams is worth an equal amount of points, even though realistically they should be weighed differently.
Great professor who is passionate about the subject. His lectures are well-organized and he teaches the concepts clearly. His exams are tougher than that of other professors but that is because they challenge your fundamental understanding of the material. The OWL practice exams, organic chemistry tutor, and chat gpt is all you need to study.
Covered material fully and taught so that we understand. Had lots of offices hours which he was helpful at. Does final replacement so if you score higher on that than one of your three exams then it will replace that. Overall he was a fair professor. Does iclicker attendance which is the only thing I did not like about this class.
Hans is a good professor. If you talk to him you'll realize he's actually a nice guy. Read the online textbook, do the OWLs before class, and go to lecture.
Professor Mentzen is a good at what he does, the material is difficult and he understands that so he tries his best to help students when they need it. He's very kind and accessible by email.
Professor Mentzen is an amazing professor that is extremely passionate. His exams are hard but he provides so many opportunities to do well in class. He is also helpful outside of class in office hours. His class is fast paced but redoing the owl homework and the challenge problems helps with this course. I would 100% take this class again.
Mentzen is great for 112! The lectures are engaging and the way the class is taught is very consistent. The slides are well organized and it was easy to find something if I needed to refer back to it. The exams were not bad and the OWLs really help with studying
Not much to say since it was a summer class, it was very independent with little guidelines. Weekly lab, OWL homework and lecture slides (which I didn't even watch, OWL taught me everything). Exams are proctored via Zoom but not super strict. This class requires good time management skills, but he does not overwhelm you with unnecessary work.
Chem 112 with Mentzen was great! It was harder than 111 for me, partly because I came from Sharon's 111 class to Mentzen; Sharon required less memorizing than Mentzen did, meaning coming into 112 I had to memorize more. Also, 112 as a class is much more conceptual. Study the concepts well, ask questions, and do the OWLs and you'll be fine.
Great guy. Was off-put at the beginning of the year due to reviews, but he was wonderful for both gen chem classes. Accessible outside of class (4/5 weekdays yay!) and responds quickly to emails. Compared to other gen chem professors, Mentzen's slides were much more organized and easy to understand. Does throw some conceptual curveballs on exam.
i like him, hes great
Prof Mentzen was a good lecturer and he was very nice and understanding during office hours. Compared to other chem 112 classes his seemed like it was the hardest. It was all very conceptual and he gave back no partial credit for simple mistakes. Overall the class was hard and his students averaged low to mid 60's for each exam but I learned a lot
so much harder than the other chem 111 teacher other teacher give multiple choice exams while he doesn't if i could go back i would've taken someone else
Fast / intimidating but slows down once material gets tough. Not a great explainer but HWs are infinite so lots of practice. Fun demonstrations and exams are exactly like the practice. After 1 assignment with particularly low grades, his first assumption was that he did something wrong as a professor. That speaks to his character.
I felt as though I had to reteach myself everything he lectures on. The course load for an intro to chemistry class is ridiculous.
Probably the most difficult chem professor but you learn the most in his classes. Homeworks are super helpful and there are so many opportunities to get your grade up. iClickers and homework questions are identical to exams. No test curve, but his exams aren't too bad. Just do the iClickers and homework and you'll be ok.
Had to take this class as a requirement but he is the only chem professor that does all open response exams instead of multiple choice like the rest of chem professors and expects you to come in with previous chemistry knowledge and moves too quickly. Take with him if you want a challenge and are good at chemistry but if you aren't do not!
I don't get the Mentzen slander. He clearly cares about his students and is very accessible. After taking chem in HS this class was pretty easy, thanks to his clear slideshows and owl assignments that helped me prep for exams. As long as you do the owls and understand them, you will be absolutely fine! The exams are truly not much different.
Although he slides were good. this is the worst professor I have ever took. He is rude unhelpful, and his exam are super hard. he would change the format every exam, will say one thing and it will be the complete opposite. I think this class really emphasizes why everyone hates chem. And no extra credit whatsoever.
This class is actually a joke. An Intro to Chem where you have to memorize compounds, equations, and elements. Half the time for the exams the periodic table did not have the name of the elements, only the symbols. All of his exams are open ended res
This class is actually a joke. An “Intro to Chem” where you have to memorize compounds, equations, and elements. For the exams the periodic table did not have the name of the elements, only the symbols. His exams are open ended responses, while the rest of the department have multiple choice questions. if you're not a chem major, he's not worth it.
He explains every thing he teaches in class. He is always open to answering questions during class and constantly encouraging students to go to SI sessions and his office hours if they're confused. His exams are not multiple choice you do have to do work, however he takes exam questions right off the HW. If you do the HW you'll be set.
Does not put in grades the entire semester, does not care about students personal matters even when clearly communicated to him, and rarely responds to emails. Lectures are okay if you can understand math by clicking through slides. Overall a 2/10 professor and not a good freshmen professor.
Good professor, very accessible for office hours and after class questions. He explains the material relatively well and makes due dates very clear. Exams were similar to the OWL homeworks and he drops the lowest quiz score
Great lecturer, even with 112 being a lot harder. He explains concepts well and is willing to go over them so you understand. Encourages questions.
Professor Mentzen is an awesome professor and really helps you understand the material even though a bit difficult.
This is definitely a class you have to lock in and study for. As long as you pay attention and do all the OWL's (even the optional ones are super helpful) and study hard you will do just fine
By far one of my favorite professors this semester. A very fair grader and lays out material and grading criteria clearly. Always accessible for HW/exam questions both in-class and by email. Funny and tries to make class as entertaining as chemistry can be.
Hans makes u memorize a lot for an Intro Chem course, but its good prep for the later classes. Exams r open-ended while other profs give multiple-choice. But as long as u do all the homework and practice ur set, bc he takes questions straight from practice exams. Also drops your lowest quiz score and gives extra credit on homework and attendance.
Prof. Mentzen's class is definitely difficult and requires a lot of effort, but he's a caring professor that really does want you to succeed in his course. He's accessible outside of class and gives study tips/advice. Tests were pretty difficult and weren't all multiple choice unlike other Chem 111 classes.
Great guy. Genuinely wants his students to do well, gives a lot of of help outside the classroom and responds to emails fast. Class is difficult and your expected to memorize a lot of things but it will help you in the long run. If you put effort into this class you will do well.
Quiz are open note, 3 exams, final exam, attendance, homework, lab. Attend all classes, get 30 extra points. Do all the homework, get 7 extra points. Attend all PLTL meetings, 10 extra points. Drops lowest quiz. Exams are 43%, final is 16%. If your final is greater than average of three exams than he replaces the lowest exam with the final grade.
Metzen is a nice guy, was very helpful and easy to reach outside of class. However, his course is very difficult. The exams are not multiple choice like other professors, and you do not get a alot of time. You will have to spend time learning the content since it moves fast. Practice exams do not always mean the exam is on that content. BE WARE.
Great dude, he's always ready to help in office hours and over email, EXTREMELY accessible. Great teacher, his slides are straightforward and he doesn't over complicate. His practice exams are literally the exact same as his exams, just different numbers/elements. Gave so much extra credit in this class, for iclickers and for attendence.
Mentzen was hands down one of the best professors i've had. he is super straightforward and depending on your knowledge of general chemistry, his class can be a walk in the park. study hard, go to office hours, and always practice the owls ahead of class and you'll do great.
