Alright, you want to get a good grade like an A or B, understand the entire subject of finance before you take the class because he will not teach you anything, he doesn't know how to. The tests are not at all like the review He can't pronounce even financial terms, he is very unhelpful. He cannot explain the subject CANNOT teach and doesn't care
He is a good professor. Highly recommended for accounting and finance majors. You have to study a lot, but you will be well prepared for your advance courses. I took him this summer and I don?t regret even though I got B (average is 81.2). Just don?t start studying a night before and you will be fine. He curves and gives you extra credits based on
(continued from previous rating)...based on you attendance. His practice exams are very similar to his final ones, so make sure that you do all of them.
very nice guy. he teaches without the book, it's all in his head especially with formulas. i was astonished. i did okay if i compare it to the ave. of the class. 2 exams and final. final was cumulative but it wasn't hard as i thought. you can drop the lowest of the two exams and make your final's weight 60%. BTW, you can make formula sheets. :)
Very bad?very disappointing? He talks SO fast, his accent is very bad, I could barely understand him. Basically, I was studying the material by myself, I was nervous during the whole course. One of the worst experience I ever had. I would NOT recommend him
HE MIGHT HAVE A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FINANCE BUT HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THEM. THE TEST ARE VER, VERY,VERY HARD AND EVEN IF YOU STUDY IN ADVANCE IT WILL NOT BE ENOUGH BECAUSE HE MAKES EXAMS VERY TRICK. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM
his way of teaching is very confusing, if you have no idea what finance about, DON"T take him~!!!!!!
Very knowledgeable professor but on a Saturday class he needs to cover a lot of materials for the course. You gotta study at home and do all problems and practice exams that he gives out. All midterms and final were pretty difficult. Also taught outside but relevant materials so gotta be in class or you'll not find that in textbook. Difficult A, A-
Please don't take this guy. you might as well take Gutmann. I could have gotten an A but instead ended up with a B+. This is because he please a great emphasis on the writing paper and presentations. He, like most economist,is only interested in ideas. He has favorite students(ass kissers). Your grade will seem to based on if he likes your paper.
he is very knowledgeable in finance, but does not know how to teach at all. exam 1 and 2 are very similar to the practice one. The final is just awfully and insane long. 40 questions, 1/2 cover by the 3. section of the material. The final is supposed to be 2 hours, but be ready to be there at least for 3.5 hours. do not take him!
If all profs taught like him, Baruch degrees would be more valuable! He is hard, but that's how you learn. If FIN is ur major you should take him! If you want a high GPA + not a FIN major and don't care about subject you SHOULD NOT take him. PS- he is prof at Columbia biz since 2004, so the "he doesn't know how to teach" comments are silly!
Great professor. If you ask him a question he will take time to explain it. He is very available before and after class.
I actually have a lot of respect for this guy. He knows the field REALLY well and he certainly works hard to help the students with whatever problems they encounter. Organized and very approachable, he is definitely not as hard as some of the reviews suggest. I'd say he's a great choice for an intro finance class.
I'm sure he knows the material really well, but he is not good and teaching it and conveying it in a fashion that is comprehensible to graduate students. Even previous econ majors had a tough time in his class. Avoid him if you can!
Too smart for his own good..should not be teaching a 2 credit, core econ class. Guy spent 4 hours of a winter course explaining derivatives..will lose you within 3 lectures. Writes too small on the board, makes everything more complicated than it has to be. Half the course you'll wonder if you're in the wrong class, agree?
I am a third year MBA graduate student. This is one the best professors I have had at Baruch. Extremely smart guy. In this ECON course he does focus a lot on the math, but honestly, statistics/calculus is a subject that all MBA students should understand and know. So all of those who are complaining, give me a break. His final was not hard at all
Yes, smart guy, knows his stuff very well and people respect him for that BUT he should NOT be teaching a TWO credit course because he overwhelms you with 4 credit phd material that you will not follow. For a two credit course, I have never in my college career seen so many stressed out people, for a reason! I never said it, but avoid him!
Very intelligent professor, but if you're not a math-minded person, avoid him. He spent way too much time explaining things in mathematical terms and didn't really explain theory. I learned more from surfing Google after classes, to try and figure our what he was trying to communicate, than actually in the class.
He's a nice guy and he's really smart, but he can't teach. I learned a lot more watching You Tube tutorials than from his class. Unless you really know your calculus, I'd take someone else.
Graduate Macro Sum 11 - Got 60% on midterm and aced final. Allocated 80% of my grade to final with remaining 20% from grp presentation. So i got an A. I could not understand most of the content he talks about in class because it's so math based. He uses math to explain economics. Study the post midterm and HWKs. Theyre similar. Professor is friendl
Nice professor, but I wouldn't take him again. Not a good choice for the summer term, since there is too much information to learn within a very short time.
He should not be teaching MBA courses. He is more appropriate for someone going for a masters in economics because it is heavily based in calculus. Baruch's guidelines state that only Finance and Econ majors need calculus so it should not be used in ECO 9709.
This was basically a math/calculus class. He does not communicate concepts in a way that's easy to grasp. He had to re-administer the midterm because the entire class bombed it. The tragic part is despite all the hard work, I learned nothing meaningful, just how to solve some dumb equation and draw graphs that I will never use again in my life.
He did a good job of teaching a great deal of material in only six classes. However, I had a hard time retaining his lessons after they were over... Hoping everything sticks in my brain for the final. There was some basic calculus in this class, but it was easy stuff I first learned in 11th grade.
He taught calculus rather than microecon. He acts like a nice guy but is deceiving. His final was harder than anything taught in class/on HW. The final tests your guessing skills. The class is a pathetic waste of time and energy. The textbook is awful. This guy needs to relax on teaching beg courses, especially considering what a joke economics is.
Totally inappropriate for a core class. He teaches the calculus of economics even though that is not what the class is about. I dropped him and took the same class with a different professor and it was totally different. It's sad that Baruch is even doing any observation to realize that this man is teaching the class incorrectly.
Very hard class, but, if you are taking this class you are not an average student. A is almost impossible. Prepare for some calculus.
Took him for the req micro intro course. Hard to cover topics during short summer session. You must put in a serious effort and read the book to do well. Prof is a nice guy and brilliant. You will use your pre-calc skills. one midterm and a final, both tough multiple choice. Attendance is strict; sometimes retakes it after a break. Some Homework.
He uses a lot of pre-cal you better be prepare for that. Overall he tries to help student if you hav questions on person or by e-mail. atendand is hight priority for him you better be on time. He takes it very serius. I recomend him if you are good on pre-cal or calculos.
Choose Barry Ma. Guirguis isn't easy even if he teaches on a Saturday. It is not worth it. Trust me. If you want a challenge, then choose him. If you want an "easy" A. Choose Barry Ma.
Frustrating for both students and teacher. He understands it is too much material to fit into three weeks. All calculus, moving at 100 mph. You will have to work very hard to grasp the material and get an A.
Completely impossible to follow lectures. Never explains concepts. Just writes useless equations non-stop. Crams 10 chapters into 3 weeks, which is near impossibly and leads to very stressed and frustrated students. Extremely difficult final. Writes too small, and becomes frustrated that nobody can understand him. Nice guy and knowledgeable though
In order for you to understand this class you must have a strong background in statistics and calculus. There is definitely no time to catch up, you get it or you don't. 75% of the class is failing and he doesn't even know what to do anymore. He has no method for teaching, plus the book and school tutors are not consistent with the class material.
nooooooo, plz dont take him please please. his is very helpful and will try over and over to make u understand his proofs and trust me none of them make sense please avoid him if not u will regret it big time
If you want to learn, take him he is amazing. One of the best Professors at Baruch. If you can't do basic math and don't want to put your tuition towards actually learning something then don't take him.
If u want to learn smth., just choose him.he is amazing. He explains very well. Certainly, u should have some calculus knowledge, but just basic. Simply attend all lectures, do homeworks, and listen carefully his explanation, and u will get your A.
He's too smart for his own good but he CAN'T teach. How can it be that most students in this class get 30s & 40s? ... there's somehing wrong here...avoid if you cherish your GPA!
One of the worst educators I have ever encountered.
He's so nice and is always willing to help. Although he uses a lot of math, he is always willing to apply it into real life situations.
If you are good at math, you simply need to learn how to apply equations-graphs. Didn't learned much theory, mostly graphs. So if you are good at graphing, it's an "easy" A. Also, try not to argue Eco theory with him because whatever you say that is different from his perspective may put you in a black list. Though tests, but just learn the graphs!
This class is already one of the hardest classes at Baruch. Just take Barry Ma and get it over with because this guy is only for people that know statistics from the back of there heads. He is one of the hardest professors for this class. Definitely avoid him if you can. Oh yeah and he DOES NOT CURVE! So if you fail an exam don't expect miracles!
You have to study really, just do the homework and read the textbook. He explain clearly and will stay after class to help. The final exam was hard, I did poorly on the midterm. But he gave us a chance to improve our grades on the final exam date with a make up midterm and I got a B- for the course. Must take....
If you read carefully you can tell the comment below mine was written by the professor. The honest truth is this guy is a hard professor who is knowledgeable but can't teach. Exams are not curved and students barely pass.
I dropped this class after getting a 90 on the midterm. He was adding his own material in a 3 week course instead of following the book. No formula sheets - You better memorize. Tests are multiple choice, but expects you to show your work. He wastes time on economic theory instead of focusing on the intro concepts as the course is designed to be.
Don't even consider this professor for ECO 4000. You will regret it, he goes beyond what he is supposed to be teaching which in turn makes everything confusing in class and on the exams. He does not curve!!!! He is a a brutal GPA killer. Avoid him and look elsewhere!
A lot of people do not like this class but it is good if you want a REAL introduction to Macro, it is bad if you want an easy grade. Its graduate level so econ majors mess the curve up. If you ask him to back and and explain for the 5th time he will do it, thats what makes it good. Final exam is really hard, you have to understand.
The professor tried to make everyone understand the material, however was not good at conveying the material. He made the topics much more complicated than they had to be, or than how it was explained in the textbook. Tests are tough
Just stay away, that's all I can say. Avoid this guy if you care about your GPA. Five students dropped the class including me after the midterm. Study groups, review or textbooks DO NOT HELP. This guy goes beyond what he's supposed to be teaching. You have a slight chance of passing if you CLEARLY understand the online HW.
Yes, his class is not easy, tests are tough. He is patient enough to explain same question over ant over. Although I failed midterm, and felt like I didn't do well on final, still got B+, he gives a chance to do better. Be careful with attendance, he remembers everyone, even if he says he doesn't take it anymore, u will be checked off. He is good.
Horrible Professor. His tests are really tough. He doesn't curve either like most ECO 4000 Professors do (or need to do). There's online homework a midterm and final. Avoid him if you can because he will kill your GPA. He does not hesitate one bit to tell you got an F for his class.
He's is a mathematician at his best. He's focused more on practical things like graphs and modeling. He'll give you a core knowledge and will make sure you get it, and it's up to you to fill in the rest (by reading a book). Learn to understand graphs and how to derive equations (both will be on exams). Book is a must to answer MC on exam.
INSANELY difficult professor. extremely challenging. The entire grade is based off a midterm and a final. He WILL HELP YOU, you just need to ask. Even though I respect this guy I would recommend you find another professor if you can, all that being said he boosted my GPA, he does not understand that you have 4 other classes to worry about.
Great Professor, took him twice for FIN3000 and ECO4200. He is knowledgeable and ready to help. You need to study hard and you will be awarded. He is a fair grader. Take him if you need knowledge and you want to get good education for money you paid. I got an A for finance 3000, and don't know what I will get for eco4200 :) Good luck.
Winter 3 weeks course was taken. He definitely knows the subject, but fails to convey clearly as he thinks everyone has a math/economics/finance background. Short winter session doesn't hep either. he cancelled 1 lecture and we didn't get to go over 1 chapter, rushed through the rest. If you have no choice, it's doable, but get ready, he's tough.
In all fairness he is extremely knowledgeable . Nice on the personal level. However, here is the problem he should be teaching math not economics. He wants everyone to understand the mathematical base to apply to economic concepts , which makes sense but as you will see throughout the course he will emphasize math at all levels not its application
Very tough class but very helpful professor. He will go over a topic as many times as you need, just ask. He goes out of his way to help you as long as you try your best. One midterm, one final, and a group project. Everything you need for the test he will go over in class in detail. So if you take notes you can't fail. Favorite class at Baruch.
If you're rusty with your calc then this class will be a pain. 1 midterm, 1 final - most students fail but he has a crazy curve. Moves through the material fast - gets annoyed when students ask basic-algebra related questions, so its best to read the chapter the night before. Class is all PPT slides, but he could be very funny - kept the class fun.
The truth is this class is very tough, but you can get an A if you put in all. Ask as many questions as possible. Understand the technical aspect of the course. Know how to apply calculus wherever and whenever. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter. if you do all these, not only will you pass this class but you can get an "A"
Professor Guirguis is a very nice person and cares that you learn the material. That being said, his lectures can be very confusing. He focuses a lot on calculus and derivatives - I did not know I would be taking an intense math class. I wish I dropped the class when I had the chance. Avoid taking this class if you care about your GPA.
Hes a math fanatic! But hes an amazing person! I totally suck at calculus. I hated his class because of the amount of math but he cares. He would teach until you understand. Hes one of those professors who wants you to learn, even if he has to modify his syllabus.
Prof. Guirguis's class has been such a struggle through the entire semester, however I would reconsider taking a class with him because he truly cares. Not only he will hear people's questions and do his best to make sure he was clear, but he is the most available prof. to ask for help. Tough grader, but if you show efforts you will be rewarded.
I recommend not taking his class if it's during the summer or winter session. The man is very knowledgeable about macroeconomics but he makes the course more difficult than it has to be to make sure we understand the topics, which is hard in a 5-week span. He purposely gave a challenging final that was unlike the practice final or hw questions.
There is no doubt that this class is difficult, especially if calculus isn't a strength. Lectures can be intensive and hard to follow, and you must understand the intuition behind the mathematical processes. Study, study, study and be sure to ask questions, he will always answer them.
I decided to give this guy a second chance after my Eco3200 with him, mostly because there were no other options. Hated him this semester even more. He is a nice guy, but as a teacher no good. Whole class did not follow his explanations and he repeats himself often, but this still did not help. I was very confused the whole semester. Frustrating!
I never really understood what was going on but if you show him that you're trying your best, you will get a good grade! He's really nice
Professor knows the material but makes it beyond complicated instead of simplifying it. Complex mathematical explanations and emphasizes the math more than the economic aspects class should be renamed to Advanced Calculus in Microeconomics
He tries his best to explain the material, but the class can't follow what he explains. He makes the class more confused about the material.
The material itself wasn't that hard. The way he explains made you think it was hard. The only way you can understand what he explains in the class was to read the chapter before the class.
Great professor. Very fair grader. Everything on the exams is from his notes/slides and the calculation problems are exactly the same as the sample problems from the book. If you study from the start and practice the exercises, you'll be fine. Professor rewards effort and improvement, so do not be afraid to take him.
The class was the most difficult I had in Baruch. Extremely difficult to understand which is bad for a course this difficult. Most class couldnt pass the exams so he would always give a huge curve. Please avoid although there arent many int/advanced eco professors
The man himself is really, really sweet and oh so nice! Very friendly, but this class???? That's a hard no. Hands down the most difficult class ever. He can't explain anything properly and the ENTIRE class is stuck. Don't take him because this class is just terrible and so difficult, but he as a person is very nice.
The material of the class is really HARD. You need to devote a lot of time in order to be able to pass the exams. The professor is really nice and takes his time to explain the material, but get ready to study!
Hardest class I have ever taken, professor is pretty bad at explaining stuff. Everyone besides 2 people in the class are completely lost. Youtube videos do a much better job at explaining these concepts.
Prof. H. Guirguis is one of the best Professors I ever had. He is a master of his field. He will spend whatever time is necessarily reviewing material with any student. He is also a nice guy. Take this Professor!
The class wasn't so good, he couldn't explain anything very well. And the material never matched up with the textbook. So if you plan on passing this class you should plan on studying and preparing to learn alot of the stuff yourself
Okay so he's very knowledgable and nice, if you have questions he will repeat and find the way of explaining it. He's open to stay after class or schedule a zoom. The class is h a r d, but you'll pass. Summer was hard, but he's nice. Advice: review math (derivatives) before you start the class because there's a lot of math involved.
Took his 3 hour Saturday class. Prepare to self-study. Everything on exams handwritten and no MC. 40% midterm, 40% final, 20% Attendance/ Pearson/ RATS assignments. He curves the class though, so thats good. Midterm nothing like what the homework is. Expects you to know terms from high level eco/stats/finance classes.
Class is hard. different from other eco4000. no cheat sheet 2 exams (short answers around 4-6 questions). (15-20points/ q). follow his lecture and study the proofs you can pass. For fall23 he allowed makeup for midterm which had similar questions. final was culmalative. does review session on zoom and records. hw is hard. big curve at the end
test are like 4-5 questions open-ended questions. Slides contain no explanations, just content. His lectures are equally disastrous. Nobody understands what he's teaching, and he seems to get frustrated with his students instead of changing his teaching methods
Run... don't think twice, run as fast as you can
Don't take if you care about your GPA and your mental health
This professor has mental health.
He is very passionate and wants students to learn. His class is HARD, start preparing from day one. 45% Final 35% Midterm and 20% presentation. He allowed a makeup exam for summer 24, and wants his students to succeed. His notes are very helpful for his exams (while the textbook isn't too necessary, just read it if you need the foundational stuff)
I think that there's a lot to learn from this amazing professor. He is one of the only great professors Baruch has. Going in his class not only taught me econometrics but inspired me to achieve better with my degree.
Professor Guirguis is GREAT. Im really not sure why the rating are so low, but i never had a professor care as much as he did for his students. TAKE HIM.
He is a great professor, he actually cares about his students doing well. He's very passionate about teaching. Idk why he has so many bad reviews, he's given us chances to do better not many are like that. Eco 4000 is difficult, so show up to every lecture on time, ask questions he'll help you and be ready to put in work!
He's very smart when it comes to the subject. This is known as one of the hardest classes and he knows that so he gave a make-up exam for the midterm and re-opened homework assignments so we could get the best grade possible.
He takes extra time to make sure you understand the subject and gives multiple opportunities to improve your grade. The class is just really hard!
It's a hard course but he truly cares about his students. Just wants you to really study, and he will give you a good grade as long as he sees you putting in effort.
This was a very difficult class for sure. The lecture might be hard to take in at one sitting but he's very willing to go through it again every time you ask. BE READY TO STUDY! I made the mistake of not attending all of the lectures, so don't be like me. His lectures are IMPORTANT. Overall, he is respectful, understanding, and he knows his stuff.
This professor is amazing and truly cares about students. He offers chances like makeup exams, but his exams are tough—no multiple choice, just written questions requiring deep understanding. Many scored low in class, but hard work pays off. I got an A- despite thinking I'd barely pass. Prepare well, and success is possible!
This professor genuinely cares about students, offering support like a makeup midterm after many struggled, with scores as low as 0 or 10. His exams are tough, with written questions instead of multiple choice, requiring strong understanding. While challenging, hard work and focus on the material can help you succeed and learn a lot!
Best professor in Baruch. This is a hard class. Prof Guirguis helped us a lot and gave make up chances!
I wouldn't recommend
